(00:08):
It's my nerd world. Welcome toit. My name is John Justice,
and I just have a really simplequestion that I want to ask today.
Is it time for a new StarWars? And I don't mean a new
Star Wars. I mean is therenow room for a new fantasy driven science

(00:36):
fiction space operas series that has beendominated since nineteen seventy two by Star Wars
and what George Lucas created. Now, this is not a dig at all
on Star Wars. I've really enjoyedand continued to enjoy and look forward to

(00:56):
the content coming out on Disney Plusand hopefully in the theaters in the next
few years. I've enjoyed the DisneyStar Wars era content as I have everything
before it. I'm an individual thatloves The Last Jedi and the Rise of
Skywalker. My biggest disappointments as oflate when it comes to Star Wars has
really just been around the production qualityof Kenobi and Book of Boba fet.

(01:21):
Neither of those shows really landed thatwell for me, and Book of Boba
Fett was more just the storytelling aspectof it, although I had some issues
with the quality of the production workas well. But we're talking about live
actions, so you can't, youknow, harp on it, harp on
it too much, except when youwatch some other pieces of content, And
I'll get to that in just ain just a moment. Netflix recently dropped

(01:42):
a trailer showing their upcoming releases. One of those releases is the Zach Snyder
movie, which is actually going tobe two parts. I guess Rebel Moon.
Now, I'm really excited for RebelMoon. I happen to be a
fan of Zack Snyder. Seeing someof the very brief footage in this Netflix

(02:04):
trailer and going down a bit ofa rabbit hole from some of the production
work and other images that have beenreleased, it's pretty clear that Zack Snyder's
Rebel Moon is going to end upfalling into esthetically and probably in terms of
action and tone, that more adultaction that Zack Snyder produces. If you

(02:27):
look at the science fiction elements ofMan of Steel, which I really enjoyed,
you look at the action elements andsome of the science fiction elements of
a Sucker Punch, which is anothermovie that I enjoyed, and again based
off of the brief footage we sawin that Netflix of that Netflix teaser,
and some of the images the aestheticsof Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon are very much

(02:53):
going to be Zack Snyder Esque, very very adults, very kinetic, slow
motion. Rab looking forward to it. I can't wait, but it doesn't
do in my opinion, what StarWars did. Star Wars and what George
Lucas created was this very unique combination. As George Aweys said, it's it

(03:19):
was more fantasy than it was sciencefiction, and he really blended those two
things well together. Now, inthat time, and especially during the Disney
era, as we move away fromthe theatrical releases, we've gotten further and
further from the fantasy element of StarWars canobi Aside and Clone Wars. Sure,

(03:44):
bad Batch a little bit, butreally we've been focusing more on,
I don't want to say the sciencefiction aspect of it exclusively, but certainly
when it comes to Star Wars,we've moved away from from Jedies and Lightsabers
them for the most part and focusfocusing more on Mandalorian lore dark Sabers,
less of the fantasy, more Lordof the Rings elements. So I've been

(04:08):
consuming other space opera science fiction contentas of late I've talked about how great
Foundation is in my opinion. Secondseason comes out here in just a couple
of months, and I recently startedrewatching the expanse enjoying both of these series.
Now, of course Foundation going backto Isaac asimof that's a very old

(04:31):
piece of work. The series looselyresembles what Isaac Asimov put in his stories,
and it has the potential depending onwhat they do. I think to
be a little bit more Star Warzyexpanses more of you your hard science fiction,
harder science fiction. They try tokeep it a little bit more zeroed

(04:53):
in on reality. You take somethinglike Avatar. Now I'm excited for Avatar.
I loved the first Avatar, reallyloved The Way of Water. As
a matter of fact, watching TheWay of Water, I remember sitting in
the theater thinking, oh my gosh, am I going to end up gravitating
towards Avatar the way that I didStar Wars. But all of this gets

(05:15):
back to my initial question of isit time for a new Star Wars?
Is there now a laye open foran entity, a company, a creative
outlet, an author, And I'mopen to suggestions. If you've read anything
that sort of fills this where theycan take aspects of what George Lucas did

(05:36):
and create an entire new story thatcan excite fans of Star Wars and new
fans the way that I was excitedwhen I was five years old seeing Star
Wars for the first time. StarWars has become very deluded. There's a
lot of content that's out there.I think that there's power in scarcity.

(05:56):
There certainly was in the original trilogy. When you think of musical acts,
I'm a massive Depeche Mode fan.I do a Depeche Mode podcast. I've
been again. I was a fanof Depeche Mode music before I was a
fan of any other music, goingback to nineteen eighty six. And they
have a new album coming out,and I'm clamoring to hear new material because
they just don't release material that oftenanymore. And in the early years of

(06:21):
Star Wars, that's the way itwas. Now we've got more Star Wars
than we know how to cover.I do a weekly Star Wars podcast,
and I have trouble sort of zeroingin on exactly what I want to talk
about because I want to cover allof it. But even now, while
We're waiting for other things to comeout. You know. We have trailers
for the Mandalorian, we have rumorsof a Damon Lindelof movie. We have

(06:43):
the Bad Batch that's currently rolling outas Soca's coming up. We had the
Skeleton Crew movie. There's a lotof Star Wars coming out, which is
great for Star Wars fans, butagain it's moved away in my view from
what Georgia originally created, and whatGeorge originally created was a riff off of
things that he saw in his childhood. So it's not like George Lucas created

(07:04):
the space opera. This goes backto Burrows, this goes back to Queen
of Mars, John Carter of Mars, Flash Gordon. George Lucas originally wanted
to do Flash Gordon Stories, couldn'tget the rights for it, and he
ended up creating Star Wars. I'vealways said that, and when I wrote
my Embark science fiction space opera series, basing it on Earth, sending Earth

(07:29):
and humanity out into space so Ican tell my own epic space opera.
I did that because I didn't wantto directly have it compared to George Lucas
by creating an entirely different world thana galaxy far far away. Because I've
always contended that anybody that does that, it's just going to be compared to
George Lucas. That might be thecase, but I feel like there's now

(07:50):
an avenue. I feel like somebodycan do that. Because we have had
so much Star Wars. I feellike somebody can take those initial things that
George Lucas was inspired by and goand create something new and again. I
thought that perhaps, and maybe wewill, But I thought that perhaps Rebel
Moon, of what Zack Snyder wascreating, would do that. But that

(08:13):
is certainly from what I'm seeing, geared much more towards adults, and I'm
thinking something more of a cross betweenscience fiction and Lord of the Rings,
bringing in those fantasy elements, doingsomething different and unique, but creating a
space opera fantasy, whereas before peoplewere afraid to go and do that.

(08:33):
I know that I would love tosee something like that. I feel like
we get these sort of segmented typesof science fiction now that I'll kind of
deviate away from what George did, whether it's the Expanse or whether it's you
know, Foundation, which are bothagain Earth based one and the much much
farther future as it relates to Foundation. But I would love to see somebody

(08:56):
go and create a completely new fantasyworld set aside from Earth, riffing off
of Flash Gordon and those cereals backfrom when George Lucas was a kid or
what was you know, what waswritten with the william S Burrow's books as
well. I think there's space forit now, and I hope somebody goes
and tries to take advantage of itbecause I think there's an audience for it.

(09:20):
Come out with a singular product.See if people grab a hold of
it, you can build something offof it, you know. Avatar to
me is really exciting because we havea franchise now. When whether or not
James Cameron will allow offshoots of Avatarremains to be seen. But I'm excited
for a new franchise, for anew ip that we're going to be getting
five five stories. And again thisis nothing against the Star Wars that exists.

(09:45):
I just feel like there's a lanethere now that could be taken advantage
of. What you think. I'dlove to hear from you leave a comment
on a YouTube You can email meTalk show nerd at gmail dot com.
Do you think it's time for anew Star Wars? Do you think there's
space within the pop culture fandom fora science fiction space opera series fantasy not

(10:05):
based on Earth that may somewhat resembleStar Wars but as completely different. Is
there an audience therefore? Would yoube interested in something like like that?
Have you read any independent novels thatfit that bill that I should be made
aware of? Again, leave acomment up on YouTube or drop me an
