Speaker 1 (00:03):
What's up everybody, it's your boys. It's Tuesday night. That
means it's Flyers Talk a two D and we got
some hockey to talk about tonight, so that's always fun.
It's amped up, it's preseason. We're two games in with
the Flyers, a bunch of other teams about two games
in as well, lots of stuff to talk about. We're
(00:23):
gonna talk about Rick Hocket's training camp, how it compares
ues to Tortorellas. Do the players like it, do players
find a little bit more fun? What's his philosophy moving forward.
We're also going to talk about the two games we got,
the game tonight against the Habs, which last time I
checked it were down three to two. We're also talking
about the game with the Aisles. Excited to talk some
(00:44):
hockey again, so let's get it. Hit that like, hit
that subscribe, hit that share button as well. Get us
out to your friends. Time to get the conversation started.
Let's go drop the puck.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen to a brand new edition of
Flyers Talk a two D right here on a two
D radio at dot com. I am Massasuti, along with
the Dark Wing Brian Daily.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
I'm looking at some of these social media pages. Flyers
fans are mid season form? Are we really judging preseason hockey?
Come on, I think we're better than that.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
And the broken one, Rob Hovia, the.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Answer is, of course we are, Brian.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Of course we are, and we are brought to you
by none other than a specialized physical therapy. If you
have any aches and pains bothering, you hit up the doc,
doctor Paul Viidell at Specialized Physical Therapy dot com, and
you have a few sessions with them, you won't be
(02:02):
having any egs and pains anymore. So yeah, go hit
up the doc and enjoy having some pain free comfort
in your life. And the pole question is Rick tocket
is running a more efficient training camp than John Tortorella.
Agree or disagree? Obviously, we all know that coaching philosophy
(02:24):
wise towards his style kind of graded on a few players,
which I mean that's to be expected to an extent. However, though,
does that mean that his training camps were still better
than tackets or is Rick Tockett onto something? Gentlemen, take
(02:46):
it away.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
I'm going to agree. I'm gonna agree to the pole.
I think he's definitely running a more efficient training camp.
I think a lot of these players are basically saying
the same thing you know going out. They're working on systems,
They're working on things to help guys understand what the
system is going to be where they have to be.
They're not skating around a rink tied to a rope
(03:11):
around two nets, Like what purpose was that?
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Like?
Speaker 1 (03:14):
I understand, you want to build the endurance, you want
to build the stamina because you're gonna need it, you
want to skate and all that, but let's let's be
real preseasons about learning systems, learning how coaches. Systems are
supposed to work, where you're supposed to be, all that stuff,
work out the kinks, supposed to get you ready for
the season. A lot of the things that John Twitterrella
(03:36):
did as a head coach, I feel like was just
about endurance and building all that stuff. I I like
what Talkt's doing so far. I think the players are
are giving positive feedback on what is happening in the
UH in the training camp, So you know, I agree
to the poll. I think Talcket so far is running
(03:56):
a very efficient camp. And I know a lot of
people might might disagree with what the game is tonight.
But yeah, I see a lot of positive things. So
you know, we're gonna get a little bit more into
that later on in the show. But I I like
what I'm seeing so far, not just from an on
ice standpoint, but from off the ice and what's in
(04:18):
the player's head. So agree to the pole.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
All right, then, Robbie, how do you feel?
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Well? Before? I answer? First and foremost?
Speaker 4 (04:30):
All right, Pete, Bernie Parant right, you know, devastating news
this week, you know, so all my heart goes out
to the family. Kim pryannt you know, it has definitely
been posting a lot of memories on Facebook and and
hearts and prayers to the whole. Flyer's family is hurting
right now. And on the scoreboard in this preseason down
three to two, you can't really get married to the results.
(04:51):
To your point, Brian, with the fan freaking out or whatnot,
it's not the result. It's all about the individual play
and what Rick Talker wants to get out of him.
So in terms of the face off poll, I'm actually
going to disagree. Although it's early in the camp, I
wouldn't say it's like more efficient per se towards camp.
(05:11):
You know, yeah, okay, running all those drills, but he
did accomplish a lot in terms of building up that hunger,
that fire, and that conditioning. This year's camp, it's focusing
on different aspects, so I don't really think you can
compare the two. Last week, I surmised talk would be
more focused on improving skill sets and hockey IQ, and
(05:32):
so far he's making me look like a genius because
that's exactly what's happening right now.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
So I think it's efficient, don't. I don't think it's
more efficient. I just think it's taking the next step.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Matt, Yeah, I would agree to an extent. I think that.
I think that with tacket system, I think what he's
trying to do is he's trying to implement his culture.
Of course, since the locker room and everything as usual,
I think that with the way that Tackett is running things,
(06:11):
I think, if anything, he might be the perfect go
between between what Torts was doing and what he's doing
in the sense of like, okay, so Tackett's not afraid
to be strong and be stern if he has to be.
But at the same time, it seems like he understands
(06:31):
the players better and when you have someone who can
do that, who can tow that line better, it goes
a long way to making your camps more efficient and
to making your team stronger when you're going into the preseason.
And of course that will help with the starters who
(06:54):
are going to be on the roster. They're going to
get the opportunity to just kind of calm down and
feel comfortable, you know with that, you know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Agreed? Agreed.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
I think it's just all about getting used to that
new voice. And so far from what I've been hearing,
people are liking this new voice, Brian, especially Sean Katorier.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, Sean Kreturier has some very uh what's the word.
He loved what he's seeing out there. Just as far
as you know, early training camp goes. Like I said,
it comes down to he he loves learning the system,
he loves working on the details of the game that
are going to help him and the team take the
(07:37):
next step in this rebuild, which you know, I think
we talked about a little bit this offseason. I think
the end result here is getting the scene back to
the playoffs this year, and one way to do that
and and I see what you were saying earlier on
about you know, Twitter led teaching certain aspects of the
game to take their game to the next level. But
(08:00):
I think, you know, brand new coach, first year, very
important kind of learning the system. So it could turn
out that maybe Tacket next year does something a little
more twitterrellaike. But yeah, glowing words about Tacket and learning
the system and how he's running the camp so far,
and it sounds like the captain's starting to buy in.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
And if the.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Captain buys in, I think you're gonna see a lot
of players follows will follow suit, and I think we're
we're gonna have a very exciting season ahead of us here. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
I think Sean came out and said that he's already
spoke with talk more than he's talked he talked with towards.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Yeah. Yeah, and that's that's something that that I really
that's one thing I really liked about Tacket. No, he
wasn't my first choice at coach, but I think this
is gonna be a massive blessing in the guys, at
least in my eyes, because he wasn't my first choice.
Is he's big on communication, so he's gonna be talking
to his players he's going to be in guy's ears
(09:02):
on the bench, he's going to be in guys ears
in practice. So having a player's coach like that, I
think is going to be massive, especially especially for the
young guys who are looking to take the next step
into development. You know, Tackett talks like he wants to
be here and he's excited to be here. I didn't
really get that vibe, especially in the final year, in
(09:23):
the final couple of months from Towrderella, I just I
just felt like he lost his luster for the city.
And you know, it's this is a breath of fresh air.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
M let me see here, PRIs was saying. I don't know,
I'm not paying close attention, but I did see where
Tackett said Crosby callt him personally to praise Forrester, so
hopefully Taka gets him elevated to that next level.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
I did see that as well, PRIs.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
But yeah, Tackett's system seems to be getting off to
a good start here in good philosophy and training camp.
The Flyers and the Canadians both having really strong performances.
I mean the performance right now from the Flyers, you know,
even though they're down, Oh we gotta fight.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
So yeah, right in the preseason, I love it.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Listen McDonald and he just he won nice to gave
one good shot run down nice and it was against
Tuck on the Canadians.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
So I'm glad it was him because I wanted to
bring him up at some point and I'm just gonna
bring bring him up now. Hunter McDonald, I like where
this kids had at. He was saying, and I guess
it was after the Aisles game. I guess it was postgame,
saying that his end goal is to make this roster
(10:49):
and if he doesn't, he's going to do everything he
can to continue to develop, to grow, to get better,
to accomplish that goal of making the Flyers roster. I
love that mentality. I think that's going to go such
a long way, and I think he's he's got the
makings of what it takes to be a Flyer. If
that's the goal, He's not gonna he's not gonna cry
(11:10):
about not making a roster. He's not going to demand
the treat. He's going to continue to work hard, and
if he turns into the player that I hope he does,
I'm not expecting to be first first line player. First,
the pairing player. If he turned into a blue collar player,
like you know, how how valuable that's gonna make him?
Speaker 2 (11:31):
No, you're right, it would be very valuable on the team. Hi.
Ever so, and I agree Hunter McDonald getting into a
scrap here, you know, and just sticking up for the
team a little bit.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
It's a way to make the team show that you
have that fight, that you're going to stick up for
other players.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
I mean, what coach doesn't want to see that, right?
Speaker 2 (11:59):
And it's nothing that was serious. It was just more
like it looks like tucking him just kind of like, eh, yeah,
let's go, and you know the usual way that sometimes
those breakout on the rinks where they're just like, hey
you want to go? Yeah, sure, why not? Kind of
the better to do.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
I will say this though, boys, one thing that I
heard talk would say during a lot of these you know,
post practice, it seems like, man, so many come out
these days, it's like it's ridiculous to keep track of.
But listen to talk talk and about particular players within
the system that he's gonna be like, Oh, I gotta
(12:36):
be honest, I'm not all too familiar with them, right,
I have to rely upon other people's information there, Right.
While I like that honesty, I don't like that you
come in you're excited about a new job. I would
study every player in this organization, and you don't have
to be one hundred percent on them, But to say
that you have no clue and I'm I'm you didn't
(12:59):
say I had no clue, but he said, I'm not
familiar with them, right, right? I mean, am I blowing
it out of proportion?
Speaker 2 (13:11):
I don't. I don't know if if it's necessarily at
the end of the world, but I don't think it's
necessarily the best look. It could be like all right,
well maybe at this particular moment, but that doesn't necessarily
mean that he isn't intending to get those details. You know.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
It's his training camp too, right, so maybe maybe this
is the time that he's studying, you know what I mean.
But still, I just you know, you have some you know, Brian,
you talked about before you were you know, I had
some trepidacious feelings, you know, towards this or whatever. And
and like I said, I mean, like this could be
a guy to it has always been a guy wears
(13:56):
his heart and his sleep. He just eat straight shooter
or so you gotta respect that and come opening night,
you better know everybody. That's all I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Yeah, and here's here's my thought process. It depends on
who he's talking about. To answer your question, which I'm
not gonna lie. I thought was kind of rhetorical. That's
why I kind of hesitated the answer. It depends on
who the player is. If it's one of the pro
roster guys, yeah, that's gonna kind of make me feel
(14:28):
a little bit. That's gonna make me feel a little
bit nervous. But if it's one of the Agel guys,
it's one of the guys that kind of like deeper
on the roster.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
I'm not.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
I'm not one hundred percent, So this is a bad
look for me now. And I think he was talking
about the Bankett.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Oh, and he's not like.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
A high priority, but he's a guy that's on the radar,
especially with the way he's been playing in practice and
in games with Mitch Koff really utilizing that familiarity. I
could try to look up the sound clip, but I
won't find it in time. It'll take me the full
forty five minutes we have left tonight.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
The Canadians almost scored on their power play. Luckily it
was a great save by Erson, the puck almost rolled
down his back and almost into the goal. Then the
Flyers had a breakaway and unfortunately it looks like it
was from Sandheim Sanaheim just couldn't get elevation over the
pad of Coconin to get it to go. But it's uh,
(15:35):
it's coming down to the wires. About four twenty seven
left in the third period and it's getting tight, you know.
You know the Flyers, they yeah, obviously they know it's preseason,
but you know, for the young pups, they especially, somebody
wants to be a hero, you know, so sure they're
gonna want to try and tie it.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
No, absolutely, because you know, these young guys are trying
to make they're trying to make this roster. You know,
they're they're fighting for the same spots as twenty seven
other guys. He you know, you gotta stand out somehow,
so hopefully one of these young guys can can step
up and get the goal. I like seeing Anthony Richard tonight,
the little bit that I got to see because somebody
(16:14):
said it was on ESPN Plus and then went the
ESPN plus and it wasn't there. You know, he's always
been a guy that that I like because he seems
like he's a blue collar player and that little time
that he spent on the Flyers already he's had speed,
He's shown that he can score. So you know, this
is another guy that's just battling for for bottom line
(16:34):
roster spot.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Mm hmm. Prinz is saying, are they keeping preseason stats anywhere?
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Checked the scoreboard? Yeah, I would do that with the
Fox score, whatever you want to call it.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
He also goes on and say that Badard got a
one time or.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Tonight Bennett Sinecki had a pretty nice go for Anaheim
last night.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
So speaking of camp philosophies and what have you, the
Flyers preseason obviously coming into full full force here definitely
something that whoa, oh Canadians moving pretty good. Luckily the
(17:23):
Flyers got it back. But anyway, the point is is that,
you know, with the preseason starting up, Flyers had their
first game against the Islanders, some big names getting on
the board, obviously Mitchkoff being one of them, and then
Mitchkoff winning the shootout for the Flyers. Actually, hold on,
(17:44):
it was not him, it was who won the shoot
up for the Flyers.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
There we go, but he did score.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
But Mitch Cooff did score in the shootout though as
well as that late Gold has senate overtime, so it
basically showed Mitchkoff's picking up where he left off right late.
But the goals, it's not how many you score, it's
when you score them, right right right.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
I mean, hey, no one can ever say Danny was
blowing up the score sheets during the season, but when
it was time for playoffs, you bet your ass he
was going to find the back of the net and
clutch time.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Well, Mitchkoff might be able to say both got a
lot of goals and goals.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
Yeah, but it looks like a penalty's coming up. It
looks like it'll be hooking is going to be called. Uh,
find out who it's on here, Montreal. So the Flyers
will have a power play here at the very tail
(18:44):
end here in the third period. So good news there.
As for the first game against the Islanders, Trevor Zegris
looked good in that game. He did have a paying
off the post that was pretty close to scoring. It
was beautiful play that was done. Unfortunately did not get
the result that we wanted, but it was a good
(19:06):
opportunity and he did look good in his time. And
we also got to see coulosoff play as well as
a little bit from Jarnson, so you know, we got
to see some some interesting names pop up there. Abeles
got himself a goal, so that was nice to see. Overall,
(19:29):
I'd say the Flyers had a pretty solid performance. Could
have been a little bit tighter goaltending wise, I feel,
but again, it's three preseason and you know, everybody's getting
the rust off and what have you, so it's not
something to jump off the deep end on like some
like some people are on social media.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
And they're always going to that's just that's just how
it is. But yeah, I mean so with the Aisles specifically,
I think the one thing that stood out to me
was that one, mitchkov loves scoring goals and whether it's
preseason or regular season, he's going to celebrate him. Two
(20:11):
Rodrigo Abeles liked his time up here with the Flyer
Slasher and he's he's gunning for that final center spot. Yes,
I think that's his spot to lose. Personally, I don't
necessarily think the Warak is going to be the guy
who's going to fall that far. I think we're gonna
see the Warak floating around the second or third uh
center line. I think he's gonna earn it, and I
(20:34):
think honestly he deserves it just because of and I
I mean Priz kind of went back and forth. I
think it was a couple of weeks ago. You know,
he's a good face off guy, he's a good defensive guy.
And I think that's gonna be his bread and butter
this year. That's gonna not just earn him a roster spot,
but it's gonna up his trade value come to come
to deadline, and he's gonna be able. He's gonna be
easier to shot. Because a team that's competitive, that's looking
(20:58):
to solidify the two way play to make a deep
Cup run, is gonna pay for a guy like Dvorak.
They got it. I mean theod what they got for
Sean Walker? What has he really done since he left?
He hasn't. He hasn't been as good with with any
(21:18):
other team that he then he did as good as
he was with the Flyers. So but point being is is,
you know, I think it's able spot to lose. I
think we I want to see just a little bit
more from some of the younger guys already have these
expectations for for the guys who are already on the roster.
You know, we're gonna be seeing cuts here and there
(21:41):
over the next few weeks. I want to see the
guys who are on the roster just kind of step
up to start making some plays and and start getting
their names out there, even if they're not necessarily a
shoeing to make the roster, you make some place, Just
get get your name out there that let Rick Tackett
and Danny Briere know who you are, right right.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
They actually shed their roster by three today, shedding reassigning
for Nathan Quinn, defenseman Austin Moleen, and netminder Joe Costanzo. Unfortunately,
legendary guy. I still want to have a beer with
him though, Junior. So I mean, Joe, he's at this point,
(22:23):
he's not doesn't have a professional contract, but he was undrafted.
The other guys just were drafted last year, So I
mean they could certainly, you know, have another crack at
it in the future.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Uh No, PRIs he's not in the lineup tonight.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Uh PRIs also goes on to say that Manty Bluemel
as well as has a goal tonight for Boston and
he's gonna be the next ver Hagi out of.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Nowhere he could.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
Uh oh yep, Montreal just got an empty netter, all right,
so it looks like Montreal is going to uh to
take this one again. It is preseason, so it's nothing
to pull your hair out about, Facebook, but you know,
it is what it is. As for the play tonight, though,
(23:23):
you know, again you just look to see specific guys,
you know, try to see what they can do and
see how how they play and how they work on this.
On the team, I would overall say it's okay. I
think that they've been playing solid. Obviously you don't like
to lose. But at the same time, I don't think
(23:45):
there was anything that I would say was disgustingly terrible
from anybody, you know, So overall solid performance. Just wish
they had a better result.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
Sure, sure, but what things that I'm liking what I'm saying,
I'm seeing a lot of center ice time for Trevor Zegres,
so that I and and that's good.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
That's what we were hoping for.
Speaker 4 (24:10):
Really, where I think his pedigree can shine here in
Philadelphia based on the knee, but also give him a
solid chance there at center ice. And he's come out
and just all praises for talk right talking about how
he's a former player, how he can really relate to
today's player. Really makes it easy, uh, for someone to
(24:32):
work hard in training camp. So I love that ballance
easy hard, right, Uh. But uh, in the end, though,
the juju is good in the in the in the room,
the guys are upbeat, and it's there's just a different air.
It's it's moving from the past into you know, the future.
(24:54):
And and I and I really think we will see
this team transition their game to a more mature level
because of it come the twenty six seasons.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
And I agree, And to your point, look at something.
Look we'll just look at Zegress for example, look at
some of the things that they released. A clip of him,
bless you, thank you, of him just stick handling, working
on his hands and all that keeping fuck control and
(25:26):
all you got Garnet Hathaway just sitting in the background.
It comes around a second lap and you just see
see him stick as his stick and glove under his
arm and just start applauding him like that's fun. Eezy
Zigres bear hugging Tyson forrest Are during practice and he
(25:48):
just they just they look like they're enjoying camp. Do
you look like they're enjoying themselves. That's gonna say a
lot with how this team moves forward this season. Like
I said, but I feel like I said every week,
I've said it a couple of times tonight, I'm excited
for the season for the Flyers. There's a lot to
be excited for. I think there's gonna be a massive
(26:10):
step forward from where this team was last year, and
it's starting with the culture in the locker room. It's
starting with the culture in camp.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Right right, let's see here, two forwards. One d man
is a question that's being thrown out there by Priz.
I'm guessing for the cuts.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
Yeah, he was asking. He asked how many roster spots
were opened, and I responded.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
Oh, okay, got you got you, Brian, real quick, Maddie.
He brought up Tyson Forrester, and that's another bit of
good news too. Having the contact jersey on today no
longer the non contact jersey, that really strengthens his chances
to be ready to come opening night for this season.
(27:00):
So I mean, that's just great overall. You gotta be
encouraged by his progress, guys.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
One hundred, considering that that was wide open when they
made the announcement, they didn't have any answers. So luckily
he's still young enough that his body can rebound a
little bit quicker than say, mine. My body doesn't like
to rebound at all anymore. I hit thirty five and
my body's like, screw you, man, like you're on your own.
(27:27):
I said, all right, I guess so I mean between
my foot, my wrists, and my elbow, I'm falling apart
over here. Boys. But you know, the tyson Forrester is
uh yeah, he's on the right track. He sounds like
he's going to be ready for Opening Night. And I'm
excited because a certain a certain player I know Priz
(27:53):
dropped the comment in here earlier, a certain player in
Pittsburgh decided he was going to give talkative call and say, hey, hey,
you know, Forrester is the man. I can't wait to
see what he does. I can't wait to see where
he's gonna go with his career. Basically, Sidney Crosby gave
(28:13):
Tyson Forrester a glowing I guess recommendation or a glowing compliment. Yeah,
goes to say a lot about what not only Tyson
Forster is doing in this league so far, but what
one of the best in the world has to say
about him. So that's that's high praise, right right.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
So, I mean, overall though, we've had a really great
I think so far, we've got a great start to
the camp. And what.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
It's just what raps In in the chat.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Would like right here.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
That that thing you sent me, Oh yeah, don't do
that again.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
Just go along with what you were saying, right right, right, right,
right right. Another thing, really quick, guys, that I've been
really encouraged about. I didn't watch much tonight besides our
you know uch timing in on the game late here,
but during the Islanders the young goaltenders look pretty good
Cole's Loft, Bjarnson and and that's a good first step
for both of those young netminders.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Absolutely. I mean, Colesoft obviously has some experience in the NHL,
uh from just basically the three goaltender situation we had
last year. And Jarnson, you know, just him coming here
into training camp getting an opportunity to participate in these
preseason games. Will he wear an orange and black jersey
(29:52):
at all during the regular season. Probably not, However, though
it is nice to see him get you know, get
his beak wet he year in the preseason side of things.
Speaker 4 (30:03):
Yeah, yeah, he was seventeen for seventeen. He'll wear orange
and black. It just might be at Leigh Valley for
the course of this season. But yeah, if he has
a good camp, right, it could change from being down
there all season to maybe being up with the squad
to help out in the case of injury or need
come later in the season.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
And not only just too, not only did he go
seventeen for seventeen, be honest in but he went nine
for eleven in the shootout. That's against quite frankly, a quick,
really good Islanders team who's got a lot of young talent.
(30:46):
To go nine of eleven on that was was really impressive.
And I think, like I said, I think Kolosov got humbled.
What's up, Betty, And that really is gonna kind of
head at him and I think we're gonna see better
play out of him this year. And also keep in mind,
like that was yo s j M. What up. But yeah,
(31:12):
I'm excited for discoltending Tandem because I think we're really
going to start, guess getting some answers. I think we
know where, we know where person is, we know what
he's going to be. V Lidar could be a question
mark and then Kolosov and be honest and could be
two walk cards that could really take this team to
(31:34):
the next level. But time hotel with that, so let's go.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Yeah, yeah, I mean so far cool to see, good
to see.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
I love I love to see it.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
So with that, obviously, you know, uh, with how these
games have played out so far, guys, do you think
that with Tacket's philosophy and camp and everything, judging by
not necessarily the results, but by judging by what you've
(32:11):
observed with the play, do you think so far that
it's it's been taking effect and taking and kind of
been easily integrating in with everybody, or do you think
it Do you think there's anybody who might be struggling?
Speaker 1 (32:25):
I do.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
I think I see a lot of smiles. Brian.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
You talked about that guys having fun, and that's important
for the overall mojo and the confidence of this team.
But I also see a lot of battles going on.
There's a lot of competition for roster spots, and there's
no pulling.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
Punches are shying away from Matt.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
So there's a lot of hard hockey being played between
the smiles.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Right right right, And Sjm's saying, Tacket strikes me as
a full intensity type guy. I mean, he played, he
was a fighter before he was a goal scorer back when,
back in the day, so I mean, yeah, Talckett was
an intense player.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
So yeah, and that's what I think makes him a
pretty solid coach is the intensity. And again, the one
thing to keep in mind is, you know, this is
a player's coach. This is a coach who's been in
all the situations that these guys are going to be in.
So it makes it a lot easier to be able
(33:27):
to coach these guys in those situations, which could take
all these guys to develop to the next level that
need that extra push. You know. I like towards I.
You know, he's always good for a comment or two,
but I mean or seven. He never got you to
(33:52):
He couldn't. He can only get you to a certain
point because he never played the game. He was always
a coach, and he was a very good coach, which
is how he got to the NHL. But it just
it just having somebody who's been in that situation, it
can explain how to either position yourself a little bit differently,
(34:14):
or angle yourself to get a better shot, or miss
a stick, or create a passing lane. It makes the
world difference, It really does, right, it does.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
And you know, PRIs saying, Talcket reminds me of our
lee Emery. May he rest in peace, you know, I
will say, I like the fact that we're seeing the
(34:48):
early signs of okay, this is integrating in pretty well,
and it's going to benefit in the long run for
the Flyers obviously as we get closer into the season
and you know, getting further along, obviously you're gonna have
your peak and valley moments as everything happens in a
regular season. But at the same token, what I really
(35:09):
enjoy about it is the fact that you're seeing the
system slowly but surely coming into place and you know,
taking care of the taking care of the taking care
of itself essentially.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Yeah, and we want that, right.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
And Heathery saying nothing much. She says, she just got
done making cupcakes.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
Oh I've given up the suits for a while, trying
to get in for the wedding.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
But yeah, yeah, yeah, I got it. It's tough, I
will say, although to be fair, I guess with me
it was more like just soda. That was what I
had to cut out.
Speaker 4 (35:58):
Yeah, so all those empty calories him out.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Yeah, just drink zero sugar diet, it's all about cutting
your calories.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
Well, well it's it's actually like I'll only ever drink
a soda like maybe one or two, and I'll limit
myself to to and I'll do it like only when
I'm out and about. I'm not going to do it
when I'm at home or when I'm at work or anything.
I'll just drink water. At work, I'll drink like like Arizona.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
You know, just as much sugar in that there is soda.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Well not all not as bad as it, you know,
as it could be, you know.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Like you know some high quality H two O.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Right, But I mean it's better. It's a better choice
than you know, soda, which adds a lot more to it,
you know what I'm saying. But anyway, ero sugar.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Just because there's no calories and I can have one
a day and be okay.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Right, right, So all right boys. Obviously Rob talked about
it earlier, and tragedy of course, uh for the world
of hockey. Actually, there were three tragedies that hit the
world of hockey this month, which is even more saddening
(37:30):
to see. Obviously, the big one Bernie Parant tragically passing away.
Really tough, really tough moment for the Flyers, faithful and
for the hockey world. Bernie was eighty, so it was
he had lived a good long life. Unfortunately he passed
(37:54):
away around the same time. He literally passed away right
after Ken Dryden and Ed Giacombe died as well. So
it's just like it's been a rough couple of weeks
here for the NHL. And I was gonna say, guys, what, uh,
you know, what would be like your favorite Like obviously
(38:18):
we weren't none of us were alive when Bernie was
actively playing.
Speaker 1 (38:22):
But.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
What what would you guys say about like just really
cool moments in Bernie's career that you that you really
think about as why he was so iconic here in
the city.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
I'm just gonna say real quick, how he treated everybody
like family and he would talk to people he just
met and treat them as if they were friends forever.
And I think that was that was the legend of Bernie.
You know, obviously massive, you know, big goalie want Stanley
(39:06):
cups here, but the way that he treated people, I
think that was what made Bernie.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
So iconic.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
And still did.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
I mean the charity that he does up until I
mean they were just on the stage Terry and put
out a Bundy put out a post about and they
were just on stage together during a charity.
Speaker 3 (39:27):
Event a week ago.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
That's that's why I gotta appreciate each day because you
never know when it's gonna be your last eighty a
long life but still far too young, and it does
come in threes for sure. And the hockey, you know,
so it's not to overshadow Ken Dryden legendary in in
uh in hockey as well, but Bernie just being around,
(39:53):
being an ambassador for the Flyers, always having the time
to stop and talk to a fan. You know, shake
can right, could have been a good politician, kiss baby right,
but it's just very good people person.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
And you know, you know he left, he came back right.
Speaker 4 (40:12):
There's a reason for that because once you're in this culture.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
It's just a family and you never forget that.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
And I think Rick Taka even spoke to that too,
when uh they asked Hi about his thoughts of the
passing of Bernie karnh and just compliment on on on
how warm he was to the young players coming in
right and and and always having a good uh story
to tell him, right, you know, getting them ready for
(40:38):
their own careers.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (40:41):
But just the percival like the warm karas charisma and
and and and and that the hockey world. But the
Philadelphia Flyers family lost a good one.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
Mm hmm, yeah, yeah, you know, it's a tough one
to see, you know, from the Broad Street Bully days
and him being the goaltender of the team. Actually he
had two stints with the Flyers. He was actually a
part of the pair of the first goalies that the
(41:15):
Flyers ever had, and then he left and went to Toronto
for a short period of time. I also think he
went to the Rangers actually for a short period of
time before he wound up back in Philadelphia. And once
he came back into Philly, you know, he was he
became the Bernie that we all knew and he just
(41:37):
started crushing, like teams just shutting him down without even
really flinching. He could just do it on a whim
half the time. And it's like damn that. You know,
there are goalies who can be considered elite. Bernie absolutely
is right up there with the elite goaltenders. And think
(41:57):
about the company that he was sharing with. I mean,
and we were talking about you know, Edgia, colem and
Ken Dryden, they were all three playing in the same era.
And you know, maybe Ken Dryden had more rings. I
don't even think Edgi Com even won a Stanley Cup.
But the point is is that, like it didn't really matter.
The fact is that Bernie was on the level with
those guys and he was. He was right there with
(42:22):
them the entire time that he played.
Speaker 1 (42:26):
Yeah, I mean, you say elite, elite is an understatement.
I mean, how many goalies have won back to back
Stanley Cups.
Speaker 2 (42:37):
Not many, not a lot.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
I mean, if you look at the Pittsburgh Penguins last
time they went back to back, it wasn't the same goalies.
I mean, Tampa Bay, Florida, maybe Montreal, It's heyday, the
Islanders in the eighties. You could probably yeah, throw them
out there.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
I mean, the Oilers didn't even have like they switched
between Mogue and fere.
Speaker 1 (43:05):
Yeah, and like, you know, for him to kind of
be able to do that be in a longer list
that I'm sure I'm making it out the scene. But
I mean, it's hard enough to win once Stanley Cup,
(43:26):
but to win back to back and be the goalie
for both says a lot about his game and how
he was as a player. But again, like like I
was just saying who he was off the ice. I
think he was always a great goalie, but how he
was off the ice with the fans made him a
(43:48):
legendary Flyer.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
No, you guys are right. I mean they're by saying
that French Canadian humor or should I say humor, But no,
it is true. And Bernie, you know, one of the
big moments obviously for him, definitely was like John had said,
when he shut out the Boston Bruins in Game six
(44:15):
of the Stanley Cup Finals, won to nothing and won
the first Stanley Cup for the Flyers, which was the
first championship Philadelphia had seen in quite some time. And
you know, I mean we think about how valuable that
Stanley Cup was to Philly at that time. I mean,
you can equate it to when the Phillies won the
(44:36):
World Series in two thousand and eight. You know, it's
just like, why was it such a big deal when
the Phillies won and oh eight, Like, because Philly hadn't
seen a championship since the eighties. So that's a good
long while for there not to be a not to
be a championship in Philadelphia, you know. So it was
(44:58):
the same thing inten seventy four. The Philadelphia had not
seen a championship in a long time, and so it
was a big deal when Bernie pulled that shutout off
and won the Stanley Cup for the Flyers, it was huge.
It was the biggest thing ever for Philadelphia.
Speaker 1 (45:19):
It's pouring here.
Speaker 2 (45:20):
By the way, Oh that's so that was the noise outside. Okay,
is that.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
Can you hear it? Yeah, hear it through my speaker microphone.
Speaker 2 (45:30):
No, I'm hearing it outside my window.
Speaker 3 (45:33):
Probably hasn't come up to be yet.
Speaker 1 (45:36):
It's coming.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
We'll get there. It'll get there, just you wait. But
but I mean, yeah, Bernie doing that, and then of course,
obviously the shutout against Buffalo to secure the final Stanley
Cup of that era for the Flyers and that era
of the Broad Street Bullies, you know. I mean, it's
(45:58):
a shame Bernie got hurt in the seventy sixth final.
I don't know if the Flyer still would have won
that series because they were facing literally arguably the greatest
Montreal Canadians team ever put on ice, So that would
have been quite a challenge even if Bernie was in net.
And you're also facing Ken Dryden, who had been very
much an equal, So that would have been a challenge
(46:21):
to say the least. But the fact that you know,
Bernie had so many great classic moments. I mean, he
was in goal against the Russians when the Flyers took
them on and beat them and physically beat them and
beat them on the score sheet too. So you know,
(46:41):
so many great moments from Bernie Paran and such a
great man. And I will say I'll share a funny.
I'll share the time I met Bernie. Actually, my uncle
did the Fantasy camp, so I went down to go
see him. Bernie was his coach and so he was
just you know, he tapped my uncle on the shoulder saying,
(47:02):
I gotta go get something from the car, and my
uncle introduced me to Bernie and uh, at the time,
I had my hair and I had the full beard going,
and my uncle joked and said, yeah, he's sporting his
Scott heart and o'll look right now, and uh, Bernie
responded with, what, you're a lot better looking than Hart.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
And that's the charisma, right, that's the try just and
he treated everybody like like you were his best friend.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (47:37):
They once said here in Philadelphia that only the Lord
saves more than Bernie. Well, now Bernie is together with
the Lord, so they can save everyone together.
Speaker 1 (47:47):
Right right, Yeah, Lord knows that we need it all
I want to say on that.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
But yeah, so, uh, definitely a tragic moment for for
the Flyers. Sad day, you know. Unfortunately it's inevitable, but
you know, it's a shame that it happened right before
the season really got underway. Obviously, we know the tributes
(48:18):
will definitely be going out, you know, to him as
we get when the Flyers get back to Philadelphia, and
definitely when the season gets started. And then on top
of that as well, you know again also for Edgie
a co Home and Ken Dryden, you know, and thoughts
and prayers to them as well to their families for
(48:38):
the for the lost. And you know, the hockey world's
lost three players in the span of two weeks, and uh,
here in Philly we lost a legendary player. So it's
it's really hard. It's a it's a tough one. But
the good news is, though, is that as we continue
(48:59):
moving forward, as we get closer to the regular season.
You know, so far, preseason's been looking really good. A
lot of training camp opportunities, you know, positions that are
being fought for. There's not many, but by god, they're
fighting for them. And that's good because competition can bring
(49:19):
out the best in young players. And I think that
that's what we're gonna That's what we've been seeing. So
hopefully we'll continue to see that as we get closer
to the regular season.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
Absolutely, and like I said, this is this camp, this
season is really going to tell not just the organization
but the fan base about where they are in the rebuild.
How far away are they. You know, everybody keeps seeing
there's not a ton of talent on this flyer Fross,
(49:52):
I strongly disagree. I think there's a lot of talent here.
We just need to right coach to get him over
the top, and I think I think they.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
Have it there. There's talent. It's just that there's a
lot of raw, untapped talent that's there. And it's like
that's not a you know, you have to like you said,
you got to have the right coach. But at the
same time, it's like it's there, It's always been there.
(50:20):
It's just the problem is it's like you can't it's
not just going to magically appear. You know, mitchkov just
has a god given talent. Some guys need a little
bit more development. Mhm, you know it's just how Roles.
Speaker 1 (50:36):
Yeah, I mean Forrester, all right, so we I won't
even bring a Forster. So here's a good example. So
you look at look at Fairbe, look at Frost. Faibe
and Frost are obviously no longer with the organization. Ironically,
they were the only two goal scorers for Calgary the
other night. They never developed into players at the flyer
(51:00):
stuff that they would be. So now's the time to
really prove this organization what you're worth is otherwise you're
gonna hit the bricks with with Frosting and beez Are
And obviously I'll have no ill will towards these guys.
Best of luck to wherever they go. But you know,
not the time to shine, baby, Now's the time to shine.
Speaker 2 (51:21):
Right Yeah. And I think that, you know, as we
get closer to the regular season, we're gonna you know,
see more of the cuts and everything like that, and
you know, we're gonna see who's getting more ice time
and who's getting more of the opportunities to be out there.
You know who knows it may very well be able.
After his performance against the Islanders, it's a their possibilities
(51:45):
are very much there for a lot of players who
he to make this roster.
Speaker 4 (51:50):
He's fighting hard, I too much to our prognostication.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
Cam Yorke has.
Speaker 4 (51:58):
Looked awesome and he honestly, like is really looking to
make that next step in and and and prove that,
you know, I'm worth that money and much more in
the long run.
Speaker 3 (52:11):
So there's a lot to be excited about.
Speaker 4 (52:13):
I think anybody that doesn't see the talent here has
their head in the sand. I think the people that
know hockey that you hear about Frank Sarabelli very high
on this team's perspective chances and I really feel despite
the loss tonight, right, the wins and losses preseason doesn't
really matter.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
I like the fight.
Speaker 4 (52:32):
I like how they came back with two goals in
the second period tonight. And you know, we'll see what
this was as this roster starts to take shape, because
there's so many different versions of this team that's also
getting put out there on any given night. So we'll
definitely we'll definitely, uh, you know, see how that materializes.
(52:54):
But we may mention of how this team is moving
away from the John tortorell or Well, I did want
to make a note I heard I saw an article
today that John Torrella actually landed a new coaching gig.
Speaker 2 (53:09):
That he did. Yes, go right ahead, route.
Speaker 4 (53:12):
H He lands a new coaching job with USA Hockey
as they announced their assistant coaches and sports staff for
Mike Sullivan. As the US men's Olympic team is set
to compete in the twenty twenty six Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy,
it'll be the assistant coaching staff will be John Tortorella,
as well as New York Rangers assistant coach David Quinn
(53:34):
and Minnesota Wild head coach John Hines, serving under head
coach Mike Sullivan. So congrats to Towarts. I'm not a
surprise he's been. He's had his hand in USA Hockey
for a while.
Speaker 2 (53:47):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's true. And obviously Towards is actually
one of the more successful American coaches that's been in
the league in history. So it's a it's definitely a big,
a big thing for him. And you know, all I
can say is for the boys who are going to
be on that USA team, you better be ready to
(54:08):
put the work in because you will have to work.
Speaker 1 (54:13):
Yeah, and you know not since you know, come up short.
And John Trella is a great coach, right. You know,
he's been very successful in this league. Yeah he's only
had one Cup, but every team that he's been a
part of, every organization he's he's coached, has had great success.
(54:35):
M I mean only the two thousand and four Tampa
Bay Lightning team was his only Stanley Cup champion team.
But he's gotten there with Vancouver and I believe he
got there with the Rangers. So he's always been good
enough to get there, but maybe his teams have fallen short.
But I think putting him in a position where he's
(54:56):
working with USA Hockey instead of a particular organization. I
think it's going to be more beneficial for him because
then he's he's working on he's he's working on, you know,
a game plan for the Olympics and now for February.
(55:19):
Instead of working on the game plan every week, he
can continue to work on work on things now and
and get get Team USA ready for for Italy and
the competition that's going to come.
Speaker 2 (55:34):
Yeah, and it'll be an exciting time because obviously the
NHL pros are going to be heading over to the Olympics,
so there will be that contest from them, which.
Speaker 1 (55:45):
I'm still not fully on, but you know whatever.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Yeah, so that's been baked into the schedule as per
usual when this happens. And you know, they did it
last year with the four nation which I think unfortunately
that became a bit of a political rivalry more so
than a hockey thing, but you know, that is what
it is at that time. But what I definitely think
(56:14):
will be fun about this is that we'll get back
to it being more of a friendly contest instead of
it being a mudslinging contest like the previous one turned into.
So I'm kind of happy with that personally. As for
(56:37):
as for that though, guys, was there any was there
any philosophy training camp notes that we wanted to throw
out there or anything from the games that we noticed
that we wanted to put out there before we wrapped
this guy up.
Speaker 1 (57:01):
I'm actually kind of surprised if Ladar didn't play it
all tonight. I'm surprised they haven't gotten him in a
game situation yet. I know we're only two games in,
but you know, you had Kolosov and Jarnison against Honors.
You figure you're probably gonna do Aerson in Vlidar tonight.
But you did Erson and Kolosoff and you've ran Erson
all night. So not necessarily a bad thing because we
(57:24):
know Erison's gonna be the starter, but would have been
kind of nice to see Validar.
Speaker 2 (57:31):
Yeah, yeah, it would have been. Doesn't mean that they won't.
There might be a game coming up where he'll do
the whole thing possibly like Ersen did.
Speaker 3 (57:42):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, you know.
Speaker 4 (57:46):
Until then, you know, we'll just try not to get
beat by Bitchcoff anchor Banking because they've been working together
real well. I've liked mitchcoff physicality in practice too, which
is nice, you know, like see a guy take a
guy out on the boards and then beat a sweet
paster grabank and it's all that. It's a little clip
from from camp I.
Speaker 3 (58:07):
Uh, you know, bring that physical element and let's go.
Speaker 2 (58:11):
Yeah, that's what you'd like to see. You want to
see that develop as we get you know, as he
gets further along in his career. But yeah, I think
so far, I'm liking the names that have had their
opportunities to kind of take a step to uh to
(58:33):
moving towards their development and making progress. And uh and yeah,
I think that with the performances so far. You know,
like I said, doesn't the results are what they are,
doesn't really matter. The important thing is did they play well?
And so far been seeing some good play from a
lot of guys, and hopefully that will continue as the
(58:55):
preseason moves further towards its conclusion. And obviously there's a
lot of a lot of work still to be done,
but hey, so far it seems like everything's coming into
place with tacket system. So good news, so far, so far,
so good. So with that, I believe that's it for
(59:20):
this edition of Flyers Talk a too d and again
would have loved to have seen a better result. Unfortunately
it didn't. It still doesn't matter though at the end
of the day, as long as we saw good play
from the players, that's what matters. So next week on
(59:44):
the show, just to take a look here, see if
we have ourselves a game next Tuesday. We do not,
so we fall in between preseason games next week, so
we will have a chance to review the two b
Austin games that are coming up and preview what's coming
