(00:06):
Welcome to Adam Sandler Film School,a complete retrospective of Adam Sandler and his
friend's influence on film. This week, we're watching the Chris Rock comedy stand
up special Selective Outrage, and I'mRobert Bacon. Oh yeah, with the
(00:27):
I'm Caleb George and Adam Marie Maloney. Yeah. That went smooth. No
need to edit that as so keepit. How you guys doing good?
Yeah? Okay, How did let'sjust get right into it. How did
we overall feel about this stand upspecial? Seeing our boy Chris back on
(00:50):
the stage doing what made him famous. I was inebriated because I didn't want
to watch it, So let's justbe honest about that. Yeah. I
have very mixed feelings about it overall. It's very up and down for me
to kind of give a broad overview, but I'm very interested to hear what
you both have to say. Forme, the hype around it being live
(01:15):
wasn't paid off. Yeah, heclearly had rehearsed it, but also he
had his show notes flailing around inhis back. Yet I thought it was
tag. For the longest time,I was like, why didn't he take
off that tag? I thought thosewere gene tags if you haven't seen it.
He's all in white. He's allin white, and yes, I
(01:38):
guess it's his show. Notes area white thing hanging off of them.
Maybe someone will write in and justlike fucking flame me for being wrong.
But I'm pretty sure that they arehis notes, because it's like a notebook.
It's like waving around in his backpocket. There's clearly like different amounts
(02:01):
of words on it. I don'tknow. I just assumed those workers and
notes. It being live isn't worthwhat we got because he repeats himself a
lot. He screws up a jokewe could talk about later, and you
know, in a normal special,he would shoot this like three, two
or three times and then they wouldedit it right and pick like the best
(02:22):
one, and then they could haveyou know, we wouldn't have had that
mistake, and then we would havegotten a better, tighter show. Instead.
It's an hour and ten minutes andit's probably like a forty minute stand
up, which is still long forstand up. Yeah, I think if
I had to bet the reason whyhe did it live, it's because he
does he's not quite as sharp ashe used to be, Like you could
(02:44):
tell there's some flubs you could tell, there's like, you know, some
mouth mumbles stuff. To me,the doing it live was really it felt
like it was more for him thanit was for us, Like to prove
I can still do this, Icould still give a live performance, and
like, I'm still at the topof my game, and to that,
I guess I appreciate it, Butat the same time it I kind of
(03:07):
still expect you to be a littlebit at top of your game, like
you're just hosted the Oscars, Like, I don't know how much the benefit
of doing it live showcases how he'sstill this phenomenal stand up comedian. I
mean, if you were seventy, like I saw George Carlin a year before
he died, and it was disappointing. Like if you were doing it live
(03:27):
in your seventy and you're still killingit, like I would be immensely impressed
by that. But this feels likeit's just not enough bang for your buck
to do it live. Yeah,And I mean, do you know how
old Chris Rock is. He looksfantastic for whatever age he is. I
was gonna guess mid fifties. He'sfifty eight, Okay, Oh, he's
almost sixty one, almost sixties gettingup there. Yeah, he does not
(03:52):
look like it, does not lookit. He looks great. I don't
think any of his flubs were fromage. It just might be a little
bit of run or I don't know, excitement. Uh, there was.
There's a couple of times where Iwas like, is that the end of
the joke or did you just areyou so excited you're you're bailing on it
and moving on? Yeah. Again, if it was edited, it probably
(04:13):
would have been better, but forme it was uneven. I guess I
just watched Baby Ja like after it, and like that one was so different
and so much more modern and morestorytelling, and that's more my style.
Chris Rocks is a little bit youknow, like screaming, and that's never
really been my style. But Idon't know, I didn't hate it.
(04:36):
You say you didn't hate it,I'm like, I didn't love it.
So I think that's I think that'sbreed of like the level it's at.
Yeah, Um, if you're abig Chris Rock fan, then you'd probably
really really like this, right.Yeah. Yeah, I've I've listened to
(04:57):
I've watched some of Chris Rocks earlierstuff. It's not white as poignant.
For the first of all, likethe first fifteen minutes, I was like,
please don't be just like Boomer, anti woke joke stuff Like I was
just like, please don't do that. And then and then it feels like
also for any comedian that's like aboveforty at this point, like trans jokes
are kind of a litmus test asto whether you're going to be an asshole
(05:19):
or not. He passed it,but like there's just moments where you're just
like, I don't know that thisis like as poignant as he used to
be. I don't know. Ithink he's lost a bit of a step.
But but there are moments I alsothought were very poignant. It just
was uneven. I think for me, I'd like to actually play a joke
(05:40):
that you know, I'm just gonnaplay a joke and we'll talk about it.
Okay. I have no problem withit at all. I'm off of
social justice. I'm all for marginalizedpeople getting their rights. The thing I
have a problem with is the selectiveoutrage, collective outrage. Everybody, you
(06:03):
know what I'm talking about. Oneperson does something, they get canceled,
somebody else does the exact same thing. No, you know what I'm talking
about. You know, like thekind of people that play Michael Jackson songs,
well, won't play all Kelly samecrime. One of them just got
(06:31):
better songs, which is again frustratingbecause I'm like, well, Chris,
one of them got the most canceledyou could get, which is he's fucking
dead, Chris, So like, you know, so it's like, I
get your point here. But one, first of all, we can improve
(06:53):
on being better people by not letting, you know, these instances of someone
being a sexual assaulter or statutory rapistslike permeate our society, and we're being
better about calling those people out.But also one person will actively benefit from
those songs being bought and purchased, any other one's dead. So it's like
(07:14):
and then you get the whole argumentof like separating you know, the art
from the person, but like thisfelt like a really like false equivalency to
me. The problem with Chris Rockand Adam Sandler and all of his cronies
is that their comedy relies on reducingthese complex problems into like simple what about
(07:41):
ism, and it's just all waymore complicated than that. They all do
a disservice to these issues by likereducing them to like the tiniest nugget of
like what they actually are. Youknow. Yeah, So I think this
is a great kind of set upfor a joke to dive into, because
there's a lot of meat on thebones of this. Like I feel like
(08:05):
a lot of people have had thisconversation of like, well, why is
it okay to play Michael Jackson.Well, it's because he's dead. So
it'd be great if he got intoit and made jokes about that and be
like, I wonder what's difference.Well, I guess you have to be
dead, so as soon as ourKelly dies. And I can't wait for
our Kelly to die because then, right, you know, I could start
really listening to the Free really Soundsagain. Yeah, you know. So
(08:26):
it's like the it's the it's thetip of the iceberg and he kind of
moves off of it. And thatpart was I was like, Oh,
this is gonna be good, andit was, and I think it's a
great opening to a joke, butthen to move on, it's like,
ah, god, damn it.Well, and here's the thing he does,
and he does it several times duringthis show, which is it's a
little bit smell in your own fartswhere he'll like say a word or a
(08:48):
phrase that he throws out to theaudience that sounds complex and profound, and
then he'll wait and he'll pause, and the audience will give a smattering of
applause because they're like, yeah,uh huh, what does that mean,
Chris, what are you talking about? Like it's just like they have to.
He says something and the audience thinksthey get it, so they clap
a little bit, but then hehas to explain it. So I'm like,
(09:11):
don't just throw out a phrase andsound like you know what you're talking
about and then explain it, liketo I need you to not do that.
It was like really frustrating me.After a while. I was going
to say The ways to get attentionis an example of that. He's like,
there's four ways to get attention, show your ass, and it's like,
Okay, this is funny. Andthen he's like be infamous, like
(09:31):
be a school shooter, and it'slike Jesus, and he had no jokes
about that. He had no jokesabout it. He's just like, you
could be infamous and you could dothat horrible thing. And then he had
jokes for the other ones, Sohe had jokes for three out of four
of them. So it's like andagain it's very like surface level. And
I was really hoping because at theend he worked in some stuff. You
(09:52):
know, he's like, you couldbe excellent, but it's really hard.
Yeah, you know, it's wayharder than just showing your ass. You
know, that's fun. Like ifhe just would have kept going with it,
but he didn't, it was almostlike he wasn't ready for this,
right, well, there was anopportunity for him to punch like, you
know, to punch it those piecesof shit who do this stuff for attention,
Like you could show your ass.You can be an ass, right,
(10:15):
Like, there's just ways to likepunch it up that like you can
be Like when I talk about thatold school with Chris rock poignancy, it
felt like on those issues he wasmuch more poignant. He was able to
like, you know, that's whyI like old school Chappelle, Like he
was poignant, he was able toneedle these really big societal issues with jokes,
and like it just felt like thiswas so uneven. Sometimes he hit
(10:37):
and sometimes he didn't. Yeah,I mean I have like knows about other
stuff. There were stuff I reallyenjoyed, but yeah, I mean it's
almost like when these guys get ataste of fame and are rich, these
issues don't affect them as much becausethey're literally so rich and can pay to
(11:03):
not like they don't they are nowignorant because they're they're so they live such
cushy lives, it doesn't like affectthem. Yeah, And I think that's
kind of how he's like lost thebite and edge and Chappelle too, Like
Chappelle was super popular and then likegot super rich, went away to a
farm in Indiana, and like noone saw him for ten years, you
(11:26):
know, Like he has like theseguys have the luxury of like just being
kind of under the radar and livingcushy, comfortable lives. And it's also
why the last ten minutes are myfavorite part because it's like, finally something
I can relate to you on becauseI was there and I kind of understand
the context of it, and likeI feel bad for you because I think
(11:48):
that some of the points we weremaking were completely valid, Like I think
he articulated that moment that's so iconicthat he has to address right everyone expects
him to in a really well doneway and took ownership over it and like
the last ten minutes of the mostenjoyable part for me. Yes, and
it's it's shocking to me that hedidn't lead with the Will Smith slap.
(12:09):
If he would have put it onin the beginning, that's why we're all
watching. Then people would have turnedit off. It's live. Yeah,
I got to save it at theend point. Yeah, that's why we're
all watching. I wrote down likeat one hour, so this is an
hour and nine minutes at one houris the first Will Smith reference. He
makes you wait a whole hour toget it. Honestly, that's probably why
(12:30):
he did it live. It's asmart business move. You want to get
eyes on your stand up, youknow, leave people waiting to hear you
talk about the thing they want youto all to talk about. Like it
probably drove numbers to a stand uphonestly. Yeah. This is his first
public appearance, like big public appearancesince the slap, right, Yeah,
I actually kind of I'd like toplay, you know when he talks about
Will Smith a little here, sheis so far that if she weren't a
(12:56):
burg again, she could still marryjay Z. Now if jay Z worked
at Bagen No no, no womengot the pole. And by the way,
that is not a jay Z diss. I do not need another rapper
man at me. Okay, Idon't need it. I don't need that
(13:20):
smoke. I'm like the rock, the rock. I do not need the
smoke. Y'all know what happened tome getting smacked by Sugar Smith and then
we get right into it, andthen I was like, this last nine
minutes is I really really enjoy it? And he does get really deep into,
(13:41):
you know, Will Smith's life. And I didn't even know about this
video online where I didn't even knowWill Smith's wife cheated on him because I
don't pay attention to celebrities stuff atall. And then after that happened,
I had to like learn about itand then him talking about it. I
didn't know about a bunch of thisstuff. Yeah, all that had table
stuff that Jada and so sorry formore context. Jada, her daughter Willow
(14:09):
and her mom hosts like a redtable talk show on Facebook live Facebook Live,
Yeah, yeah, on Facebook Live. And they've had all sorts of
celebrities, but they had will onafter Jada cheated on him. But Slash
like he kind of knew about it. So it's like they supposedly have an
(14:31):
open relationship. Yeah, there,it was like open relationship territory. But
but it was his son's friend.Yeah, it was his son. It
was Jaden's friend, yeah, August, which I think if you, you
know, if you have an openrelationship, there's usually some sort of you
know, fencing in like rules, and yeah, I would assume that your
son's friend is off the list.Anybody who lives in the house for multiple
(14:54):
reasons. Yeah, several reasons, couple of reasons. That's probably a bad
idea. Yeah yeah, yeah,so yeah, so he talks about that.
He also I like the way thathe calls him a bitch, but
in all these different ways, likehe's saying other people are saying it,
(15:15):
but really he's doing it. Ithought that was really funny. And I
like the way he's like, I'mnot a victim, I'm fine, I'm
doing great with all this. Doesit hurt, Yeah, it hurt still
hurts, But like I think itwas the best way to handle it.
Yeah, because I think he madeso many salient points, and he has
the easy job here. It's abit of a layup in that, like
as long as he plays his classylike Willsness already been through this right like,
(15:39):
and so his approach of like thisain't my problem, like this is
all your problem. You took itto me, and everybody's calling you exactly
yeah, to your point, hejust kept saying it over and over and
over again, the point where Ijust I started laughing so hard because it's
like it feels like it's getting personat all. And I can't tell if
(16:00):
that's like an intentional choice, likecomedic choice, or if he's just like
a little bit hard on his sleeveof like I'm gonna say it one more
time. I'm gonna do it onemore time just so he feels it,
you know. So, I mean, I really I think he makes interesting
points. I think they're a weirdfamily. First of all, it took
(16:22):
me a while to realize that Willowwill Jaden Jada like that was a thing
that I realized only recently, andit was like, felt like an idiot
when I discovered it. Okay, good, I wasn't the only one who
was unknowledgeable about the whole Smith familyand their scientologists. Is that confirmed?
No? Confirmed? All right, yeah, because I know that there have
(16:48):
been rumors that he was on setkind of pushing scientology for some of his
recent films. Yeah, I thinkthey're They are probably a little more quiet
about their scientology. They're certainly notTom Cruise in it um, but they
are scientologists. I was going tosay, I haven't heard about Tom Cruise
in a while. In there, did they do a flip? They're like,
(17:11):
all right, if you can Tom, if you can get Will in
here, you're out. No,there's I mean, there's a lot of
people in Hollywood that you wouldn't expectthat are oh yeah, scientologists. Some
of them born into it, someof them converted, like I know beck
Is, Paul Giovannivard vc is,Like, there's a lot of them that
(17:32):
were born into it, and thenthere's a lot of them that are like
low key about it but still scientologists. I mean, I would love for
you guys to talk about it withme and maybe come to a few meetings.
Get your oh yeah test done.Yeah, it's real fun. What
are your theton levels? Are yougoing to monitor the level? Yeah?
Yeah, well minor through the roofright now, like yeah, yeah,
(17:52):
through the rice. Yeah, I'mhappy. I'm so excited to find out
that neither one of your suppressive peoplebecause I was about to squirrel the shit
out of you, let me tellyou right now. But the Will Smith
stuff, I mean, it waslike the strongest joke and the funny,
like the best button of the showwas my mom raised me, right,
(18:15):
she taught me to never fight infront of white people, Like, yeah,
that was great, Bravo, Likeyou got it, you nailed it.
And I didn't know that Jada hadprovoked Chris Rock and said he should
quit the Oscars because because Will Smithdidn't get nominated for concussion. And that's
and then the joke was and thenhe gave me a concussion, which was
(18:37):
very funny. The joke he screwsup. I'm not even gonna play it
because it's like whatever, he madea mistake. No, it's not the
big deal. I wish you wouldhave landed it. But he says like
emancipation. He's like, he didn'tget a award for emancipation. And then
later he's like, oh, andthen he gave me a concussion. Okay,
it was supposed to be concussion.I screwed up the joke, yeah
yeah, yeah, no, buthe does say something about how he watches
(19:02):
Emancipatient just to watch him get withOh my god. Yes. Yeah,
so they mixed it around, butit was great. I mean I could
have done for a whole hour ofthat, just a roast of Will Smith
and his whole family done by ChrisRock. That would have been great.
Yeah, because there were so manyjust moments of just like kind of boomer
humor where I just was like, yeah, I just don't feel this is
(19:26):
like a unique It feels like youjust have to make these jokes because everybody's
making these jokes, and like itjust doesn't feel poignant, and I kind
of just zoned out. I mean, he's still a great talent and is
an amazing stand up comedian. Hiscareer is legendary, and so I think
that I didn't know he was fiftyeight. I mean, I mean watched
David Spade stand up. It's betterthan David Spade stand up. Wait,
(19:51):
but on the celebrity train, Ihave to say I did really love his
Kardashian Oh it was very good. Those are very very good. And the
Chris Jenner like we get we welcomeeverybody. Like it was very funny calling
Chris Jenner the Kardashian Statue of Liberty, give me your tiger and you're poor,
(20:15):
You're like broke ass me. Itis so fucking funny. That was
really well done. I was Ilaughed out loud at that. It was
very funny. Again, like theirmoments are very funny. Yeah, that's
why it's it's it's hard. It'shard to recommend. If you love Chris
Rock, watch it. You're gonnalove it. If you're like, well
whatever, you know, it's notsomething you have to see. But I
(20:36):
mean watch the last ten minutes atleast. Oh definitely, you know,
or it's probably already on YouTube.I will say the set looks great.
I really liked the set. Iliked he picked a style. He went
with it at the mirrors and thered it looked nice. Again, not
as good as Baby Jay. Justwatched that when the color changes and that
he'd uses that to tell a storybehind him. And I'm kind of looking
(20:56):
forward to stand up comedians using thatwith when they have like a big stage
like that, kind of using lightor a little tiny set pieces when they're
doing jokes, not enough to likedistract, but enough for segmenting out the
jokes. It was just really niceto see that because Bo Burnham's done it,
and I don't know, I thinkI've seen a few other comedians start
(21:18):
to do it so a little bitmore performance into their stand up that I
realized that's a subtle aspect of standup that I really appreciate because it is
so it's something that's not necessarily overt. But when you do lighting well and
you create a nice set, andyou create this ambiance like like I saw
Bibby j as well, like,it makes you just look extra sharp,
(21:41):
it makes you look extra clean, you know. Or I think Anthony jessel
Nick used to light his audience andred because his whole persona was that he
wanted to imagine he was the devildoing stand up, and so he would
light his audience in red because theyessentially were in hell. There's subtle like
psychological aspects and cool lighting and setdesigns that can really enhance your show.
(22:03):
And to that, I'll give creditcredit to Chris Rock Like he looks sharp,
he looks good, set looks great. Yeah, the same thing with
John Malaney's new stand up. Itlooks crisp man, it looks really good.
Yeah, oh, I wrote down. He also said, I know
you can't tell on camera, butWill Smith is much bigger than me,
and I wrote everybody knows this,Chris, I could tell on camera that
(22:29):
you're a teeny tiny man. Isee your giant platform shoes that you're wearing,
Like, yes, smartens, It'sfine, dude. You know you're
really funny. You don't need tobe tall and big something. This is
not even a joke. But Isomething that like really took me out or
I guess I just like noticed reallyhard that I've never noticed about Chris before
(22:51):
is his laugh. His laugh waslike throwing me for a loop because he
has such like, yeah, gotcadence, but then when he laughs,
he's like he does he does, and you're like what the fuck. And
he's got these he's got a bigteeth a big smile too, so he
(23:12):
just goes like, Oh, it'slike the shark from Strange Wilderness. That's
what it reminds me of. It'sliterally like the closest thing to yuck from
a person. It's the shark. He's the shark from strange wilderness. He
grew up watching those cartoons you knowwhere they go yuckyk no I noticed that
(23:37):
as well. I was like, that's kind of a weird noise. He's
so weird. Yeah. Oh,the runner of I don't need another mad
Rapper at Me, another rapper Madat Me is a good runner throughout the
entire show. It's a it's awell, very well placed and it kind
of like leaves these break combs oflike I'm going to talk about it,
don't you worry, stay tuned intoNetflix for this slight I'm gonna go and
(24:00):
change the channel. But similar toyou Bacon, I like, I had
this on and Jimmy was sitting nextto me, and his commentary was honestly
maybe funnier the whole episode really, like like there were times or when Chris
goes, I prefer trans women tooriginal flavor, Jimmy was like oh.
(24:26):
And then Chris said something about Ukraineand Jimmy's like, tell me, you
haven't read anything about Ukraine without andthen like his abortion stuff, Jimmy was
like, there's something there. There'ssomething there, There's something there. It
(24:47):
was just really funny, like itreminds me of how you've you've said that
when Ruth and I watched this commentaryis like uh so funny and like almost
like a third character and like watchson A. It sounds almost like Jimmy
was like, um, the watchingthis for the first time in the audience,
and he would be like one ofthe writers for you know, Chris,
(25:08):
Okay, Okay, yeah, there'ssomething there. Okay. Oh I
don't like that one, Chris.Oh they didn't react to that one.
Careful, careful, Chris. There'sa line that Chris Christopher Christopher rock I
simister um. Yeah, for thefuture episodes. I've been trying to keep
an eye out for Father Daughter Trip. It came out. It was released
(25:30):
in Arizona September of last year. Why was it released only in Arizona,
Well, because that's where it wasfilmed. And refresh my memory. Father
Daughter Trip is Rob Rob Schneider andhis one daughter, his other daughter that
isn't l King, isn't el King? Yeah, el King is too successful
to want to do anything. Butyes, she's busy, she's busy with
(25:53):
her talent. Yeah, and it'sbeen released and if you go to their
website and you click on it fortickets. There's certain cities and you click
on every single one and every singlelink says four it's a four four error
not found file that found. Doesthis have anything to do with how Rob
Schneider has become quite controversial being antivaccine? No, because I think this
(26:18):
was done after or you know, during pandemic when during all this, So
I don't know, I don't know. I haven't seen. It hasn't been
released to streaming, it's not anywherein the theaters, and it's been months
and it's not out yet. Soas soon as that's out, we're gonna
watch it and talk about it.It might not ever even get released.
(26:41):
It has one review on Rotten Tomatoesand it's negative from the person who went
to go see the screening. Iassume, yeah. I mean with the
writers strike and stuff, they gottabe Oh, they're gonna need content.
Yeah, they're going to need contentpretty soon. Yeah, they'll probably get
a deal. RBS will be sittingthere and be like, well, you
(27:02):
must be really desperate to come tome. Yeah, help end the strike.
It's gotta be. That's gotta be. That's that's ten eleven months into
the strike. That's when they're like, shit, we got nothing, Barrel.
Yeah, you've already asked Carrot Topfor all his ideas. Yeah,
we can't rerelease Chairman of the board. Can we do have more upcoming Adam
(27:26):
Sandler films? We have Leo that'sin post production again, that's an animated
film scheduled for release in November twentysecond of this year, but it hasn't
been announced, so we don't know. Space Man that's also in post production.
It's expected to be released, butagain there's been no updates, so
I don't know. And then youare so not invited to my bot mitzvah
(27:48):
that is completed, but there's Istill have no news, absolutely no news
on any of these, but staystay subscribed because you know, whenever one
comes out, well, we'll watchit probably the day it comes out and
release it. You guys have anythingyou want to promote? Yeah, I
mean I mentioned it last time, but tickets are now on sale for Hitchcock
Tails ten year anniversary and we havethree shows. We have seven thirty on
