Tras la designación de José Antonio Romero Tellaeche como nuevo Director del CIDE, la titular del CONACYT, María Elena Álvarez-Buylla aseguró que su designación no fue de manera unánime, por lo que estudiantes y maestros de la institución han pedido su destitución en medio de protestas. Sin embargo, el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador respaldó y reiteró su nombramiento.
