(01:07):
black Sheep endurance coaching. Now onto a couple of highlights
for coach, where most recently he helped lead his alma mater,
the University of Oklahoma, to his best finished in eight years.
He mentored thirty three national qualifiers and multiple Big ten
twelve champions at the University of Wyoming. He's also had

(01:27):
coaching stints at Sunny Bighamton, and now he's the head
coach at University of Northern Colorado. As a wrestler, he
was a two time NCAA champion, at three time NCAA finalist,
and a four time All American. At the University of
Oklahoma Boomer Sooner, he's a four time Oklahoma state champ
with one hundred and thirty two to zero record. He
was also a star on the gridiron, and he was

(01:50):
a twenty eleven World team member and a Pan Am
Games bronze medalist. Without further an ado, it is an
honored pleasure I have you joining us this evening, Coach
where welcome to the show.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Thank you for having me absolutely.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
But before we get too far into it, anything you
got going on in Greeley, anything you want to put
out on the socials, the team socials, your socials, anything
the floor is yours.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Well, you know, I'm just getting getting in, getting situated
as a as a coach, you know, mom in the dorms.
So I haven't been in the dorms about twenty over
twenty plus years. So the good thing about it is
now my freshman in coming fresher than don't know. I'm
right across the hall from so I can pop up
and check up on them when we need to and
everything like that. But other than that, you know, I'm

(02:37):
getting to know, getting to know other staff members and
everything like that, and we're going to be putting out.
We actually meet with them tomorrow, my staff my administration
of doing a greetment and so the moment I do
we set up a date for that, I'm want to
get that out asap. And so yeah, if I can
use you guys, that'll be helpful and everything like that,

(02:59):
because for me, it is my least favorite thing to
run too. But I know in this day and as
what you got to use.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Other than that, yes, I'm excited. It's good to get
out here.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
I didn't think I ever make the drive again down
I seventy to twenty five ever again.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
But here we are.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yes, awesome, awesome.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
So coach.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
One of the things we like to do before we
get into it, we'd like to create through lines for
our fans so they know how we came to know
about our guests. Obviously, we've known about you for a
very long time watching the NCAA's and all those things.
Actually lived in Oklahoma City and got to take in
a few matches. Ou this is after your time. But

(03:44):
in our travels, Jimmy and I travel around a lot.
Like I said, we lived in Colorado for a bit.
We came to become friends with a man by the
name of Wade Kilgore, and he would talk about He
actually would come to some of the UNC matches with
us as well. You would always talk about his time
training with you. So that's our through line for you.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Oh yeah, now we got some history together. He used
to come up from Deer Creek and go with us
and battles. So no, last time I saw Wade was
actually at you while I'm been doing you and see
a few years back, and so we were there.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
So yeah, so I'm game a hug man. That's I
spotted him. He didn't think I remember, Oh, I remember.
It's uh, it was good. It was good seeing him
and I'm like, hey, it's good to remember. I forgot
he is out this way.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah, and I'm sure you'll be seeing him a little
bit more now that you're running the ship up there.
It's not too far from Denver. It's an easy drive
to come check out and support the bear. So excited. So, coach,
you mentioned you're staying in the dorms right now. How
has the transition been going, moving from Norman up to Greeley.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
It's going well, you know obviously, uh, you know, family,
you know, family is the key thing, you know, making sure.
So right now we're doing what's best, you know with family,
leaving my wife and kids, you know, Fama and everything,
because I got to get hit, you know, got to
get the ground runner, uh, getting out out and recruiting
and everything like that. So you know, we had to

(05:16):
come with the tough decision. You know, I can bring
them out here still be gone, you know, well for kids,
you can't. You know, you can't leave a wife. You
rather leave her, you know in our comfort zone with
family and friends to help and bring her up here.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
And you know you got that just yet so uh so, but.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Still is is getting in and got my stuff in
and now you know, just got back from Fargo speaking
to recruits and then you know the key thing now
is getting back to the alumni and donats and seeming
you know, you know who presented them my goals, Uh,
what I want? What I need for you know U
n C for us to be successful, to get there

(05:55):
some top douts here.

Speaker 5 (05:58):
So what do you want and what do you need
to get to where you want to be as a
head coach and take the Bears to where you see
if they can be you.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Know, I mean as far as I mean where we
all need money. Need money at the end of the day.
You know, money talks. That's one thing I learned. But
at the end of the day, you know, you don't
want guys, just don't want people speaking on the outside.
You're going to have those you know, You're going to
listen more to the people that are in the trenches
with you. And from what it's you know, after meeting

(06:29):
a few of the alumni slave stidents, you know, they
seem like Troy had a good you know hand and
you know, having people down in the trenches, which is.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Going to be because you know Troy.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
You know, I never heard of Northern Colorado until Troy
took it in twenty fourteen. And then you know, then
we slowly started, you know, we saw he was at
the bottom, and he slowly started to work his way up. Man,
he got the got the wheels going, and and and
that's the deal, you know. I mean, I'm excited to
get that opportunity to do that. But obviously, you know,

(07:03):
getting once again, it's about getting tougher greets.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
You get the tell for gruts, they want money.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Coach.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
So you brought up that your family is in Oklahoma,
you grew up in Oklahoma, you were doing a great
job as an assistant coach at the university. What was
what was in your mindset of taking over UNC bears
when you were at home and everything seems like it
was doing pretty good.

Speaker 4 (07:30):
To be honest with you, uh, you know, I you know,
I'll put my name out there, I put my resume
is out there. You know, I was actually looking in to,
you know, starting my own club with you. You know,
I was like, man, I want to I want to.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Reach the youth. I got to get to the youth.
I want to help.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
I want to help, you know, help, especially inter citing
kids that didn't have much like myself, and so my
eyes had been gunning towards that. But you know, everybody
says behind every successful man, you have a successful woman.
You know that pushes And so my wife actually put
it in my resume, and so she put it in

(08:09):
and so, uh you know, the funny thing about it is,
you know, I said, I'm not losing.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
No sleep over it's meant to be. It's meant to be.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
And so, uh, well, I know, you know, they hit
me when I at least expected, and that was the
day after that was the day we just got finished
with camp out there though, they hit me up, and
I was, you know, I was like, well, you know,
I told Dad, I don't know why you call it
me now, you know, I mean, because in the restaur world,
you know what's going on, and you know, and I
couldn't lie. I felt a little a little offended, but

(08:38):
you know, and and I shared it with him. But
at the end of the day, you know, we we
got to have real conversations and we got to talking,
and at the end of the.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Day, you know, on the same page. You know, what
I would want inappropriate.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
You know from my administration, you know, the goals and
everything like that, one thing to the next.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
Talked on Friday, flew me out Monday, give me the job.
You know that that.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Coach?

Speaker 2 (09:08):
What about the Bears? What about you n C? Get
you fired up? What excites you?

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Man?

Speaker 4 (09:15):
I'm excited one because yes, we are starting at the bottom.
But Troy, like I said before, Troy was getting these
guys to where teams were having respect on the name.
You know, you know Troy. You know at first Troy
he knows. I mean, UNC was.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
Just a bicycle. You know. You got him on the schedule,
you know, get your get your guys.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Matches in, get your wins in. But these last four
years you had to put some four five years. You
have to put some respect on you see, you know
you had to think twice. And to be honest with you,
I was starting to see big schools duck out on
it because they knew and they were they were coming.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
And so.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
You know, and once again you see how you saw
guy take a team that was you know, wasn't nobody
was scared of to where people were actually thinking, oh
do we want to do with these guys? And so
I was like, I respect that, and so I was like, man,
we can't have the same opportunity, you know, you know,
just transfer portal and everything like that. Guys are coming

(10:19):
here and there. But the good thing about it is,
you know, yeah we're we're still living the second toughest conference.
But obviously you know, you got a shot in an opportunity.
You know, we're out here in really you know, we're
you know, fifteen he and a half away from training singing.
You know, you know you can get guys to.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Come up and training. So which is which is a
good opportunity?

Speaker 4 (10:39):
Another thing to tell guys, hey, forty five minutes from
their port so get home, boom.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Get there to go apply direct to a lot of places.

Speaker 4 (10:47):
So I'm excited, you know, just get an opportunity to
finally get in the door and you know, have an
impact on guys.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
You know, I tell guys, I don't want to coach,
I want to it. You know that's the difference to me.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
That so getting that opportunity, Yeah, we're gonna win and lose.
But I see I see people you know that defind
that depends who they are, because I see a lot
of coaches winning on the man on the field, on
the courts.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
But they're losing their life.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
So at the end of the day, you know, my
goal is to show these young men how you know,
to win.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
In life and and good thing. My administration sees it,
and you know, they make it.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
What's your what's your approach to to recruiting? I mean,
you know you're you're you're at in Wyoming, Utah Valley's
got some good things going on. You know that that
mountain region, I think it slept on a little bit.
It doesn't necessarily get the credits as you know, a
wrestling hotbed. Me maybe not like you know, like Oklahoma.
We're from New Jersey where you know, people think of

(11:53):
those as like, you know, top five wrestling states. But
there's a lot of good wrestlers in those mountain regions.
What's going to be your approach to recruiting? Are you
going to try to get into those battles with with
coach Cody And.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
Of course of course you're going to get You're going
to get into those battles. I mean, at the end
of the day, you know, obviously this is where families
go vacation is in Colorado. You know, a lot of
families come out this way. Everybody comes skiing in here.
So once again it's easy to get in and out
up here. And so that's one thing I like about Greenley.

(12:28):
I'm like, yes, you know the campus campus is small
football team, you know, might not be known for a
football team. But another thing I like that wrestling is
you know, the top sport there and so which is
what I like, and so I want to keep it.
Not that I want the other sports to fail. No,
Bill is is you know when you think of unco,

(12:49):
you always saws and so that's one thing you know,
I want to keep going at short started.

Speaker 5 (12:57):
Could you mentioned building from the ground Before you took
the job, there were some all Americans that had transferred out.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
What coaches are staying with you?

Speaker 5 (13:08):
I know at one point when Andrews signed his nil
that at some point he was supposed to help out.
That was part of the contract. He was going to
be part of the staff when he graduated. Is that
still in play.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
Yes, so and Andrew and many of them technician. You know,
he's actually been running practice this past week while they
coach Hall, coach Hall or Hall. He will stay on
own staff. And now we just opened it up, you know,
looking more for a bigger coach, bigger size coach. We
opened it up and leave today and so I know

(13:43):
guys are been calling in, texting of what they want
to do, you know, of applying and everything that so
a coach Hall and Andrew will be around to help.
You know, obviously he's a legend here. He's a legend here.
He's put in the time. So if anybody does want
to testify, it's him. You know, he's going to testify,
you know, with his you know, with his faults that

(14:05):
he's gonna testify it with his success. And so that
until you know, obviously I get to know the area
because I mean, one thing I don't like to do.
The guys and I know you mean have to to
an extent.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
You know. The thing I loved about Oklahoma is I
didn't have.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
To sell testify because I walked through those halls.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
I was in there, and I was in there at Barkham,
you know.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
And so now you know, with Wyoming being attended here,
you know, you're somewhat got to sell, but we're not
going to sell what our staff can do, you know,
and at the end of the day, having a good staff,
you know, good.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
People that treat people right. That's you know, that's what
we're going to be about. The core.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
You know, our core is going to be good and
you don't need to lie to you know, we're going
to tell you how it is and what we expect
from you and so uh, you know, something that scares
guys and a few that get it, those are the
ones who want so coach.

Speaker 5 (15:03):
We always talk about the CEO role of being a
college wrestling coach. You're you're running a business. It's not
just the excesses I was on the mat. You mentioned
the donors, you mentioned fundraising, getting the money so you
can get get the horses in the stable. During your
time as an assistant coach, I'm sure you were you
were making a little list of if I was the

(15:24):
head coach, I'd be doing it like this.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
I'd be doing it like this.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Now you're a head coach, what do you want to
implement and how do you want to run your program?

Speaker 4 (15:33):
I mean, like I said before, is it's about doing
the small things right and being a walking example.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
Yeah, you know, having the court.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
You know you guys, you got you got good leaders
and then you got people to me that are just.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
Out walking right. Nobody's really follow.

Speaker 4 (15:48):
You know, they're just a person that's been giving charge.
And my deal is is you know, one being a
good person, let your yesbys and let your nose be knows,
you know, don't don't don't politic and I know sometimes
everybody's like you got a politic in this game, but no,
you are a parent and the parents and the young

(16:08):
man are trusting you, you know, to help them get
to where they want to be. Now understand, you know
you can't be It's hard to babysit wrong man, and
the bill is all we can do is you know,
lead you to water. Of course, we can't make your drink.
It's up to you if you want to decide to
do that. But we're gonna let our yesteres be yes
and you knows and what we expect out of them

(16:30):
to get that. So nobody can say because you know,
you hear athletes say, oh, coach screwed me up. I
never heard the coach that wants to screws out neck,
you know. And every coach wants his athletes to succeed
because every coach depends on that because that's where they're successful.
So it's just once again, you know, you're doing the

(16:51):
small things right and laying that foundation now, letting them
know what we expected them, but we expect those from coach.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
I heard you talk on another podcast about your wrestling
career and a lot of it you identified as a wrestler,
and when there was time to get away from that,
that was hard because that was your identity. Is it
possible at the Division one level for athletes to be
great wrestlers and still have an identity outside of wrestling?

Speaker 1 (17:26):
And how do you foster that? I tell you it's tough.
It's very tough, you know, because we preach let wrestlers,
your lifestyle, wrestlings, who you are, you know, and for
a long time that's what we can hear it. And
at the end of the day.

Speaker 4 (17:40):
You know, we you know, I preached to my guys.
I tell my guys that's that's the one thing I believe,
you know. I wish I would have separated. Couldn't separate,
you know. You know, I don't know what my mom
comes would have been, but it could have been better,
it could have been worse. I don't know, but that
this is knowing. It's what I didn't It's not a

(18:03):
life and death situation. At the end of the day,
you know, I win for me, Yes, I want to
win for meself.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
I'm valuable.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
I want to win. But if I fall short, does
that mean my life is over? Doesn't mean I'm a disgrace?
Does that mean I'm you know, a weak individual? You know,
I just felt short? And so teaching young men that, okay,
the best time to learn is when.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
You fail, you know, and and.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
Oh let me correct that, when you fall short, because
I believe a person fails, truly fails when they quit.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
When they quit, it's all right to fall short. You know,
you fail when you quit.

Speaker 4 (18:43):
And that's why you have numerous matches and duels and
tournaments that you get the opportunity to learn, because we
all know it means only means one, you know, on
one tournament means something that's you know, And so that's
that's the tools I want to give my guys. Let
them know, R man, you know, who are you?

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Who are? Not? What you do?

Speaker 4 (19:06):
Who are And teaching that because you know I can.
I can teach you how to be a national champion.
But then five years, ten years from now, the people
that you're supposed to be the husband, the father, a
good person. You're none of those, you know, because I've
seen it, you know, And at the end of the day,
that's where you know, I got it decided to Hey,

(19:27):
this is the assignment that's given to me, am I
being a light for myself or my being a light
to my Lord's sake.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
Wish I would have known that in nineteen ninety four.
Coach coach at a high level, you, I mean, you've
been at the highest of highs for your own athletic career.
You've worked with some unbelievable athletes. What is it that
really separates kids from a great high school wrestler coming in?

(19:57):
I mean you want as a freshman, what what's what
separates good from great and great to excelling at the
next level coming right out of high school.

Speaker 4 (20:06):
No, I tell people the difference between high school and
college is the intensity. You know what, I'm easy and
how do you deal with adversity because when you're going
that room. I was just laughing jokes with coaches today.
We all when we all get in that college room,
you got grown men waiting for us. So you know,
me coming in as a top recruit, you know, in

(20:28):
my class I had some grown men that's been in
that restaurant for four or five years. Wait, and so
they opened up my eyes real quick. And whether it
was lightweight, whether it was middleweight, it didn't matter. So
I had to learn and to adjust to that adversity,
you know, and that intensity. And when I adjusted to it,

(20:50):
that's when I started to see upset.

Speaker 2 (20:58):
Hey, Code, you were all star are on the football
field as well, weren't you.

Speaker 4 (21:02):
Yes, I remember those days. Man, it was a long
time ago. Yeah, one hundred and thirty five pounds of me.
That was a long time ago too.

Speaker 1 (21:11):
Well.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
We're big on multi sport athletes, especially you know, through
middle school and youth and even into high school. And
how that you know, breaks up the season a little
bit gives you a little bit of a couple of
different looks. What are your thoughts on the multi sport
athlete and how that, you know, is a benefit in
terms of long term development and keeping the athlete fresh.

Speaker 4 (21:32):
I think it's good because all you're doing is changing
on your perspective to another sport. You know, football is
a team sport, so it's teaching you one how to
be a team player. Now, if I can go back
and evaluate. You know, there'll be some things I do different.
You know, you can't praise your lineman when everything's good
and get on on when things ain't going good.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
You know.

Speaker 4 (21:55):
You know, people ask me, was I a good team player.
I'm like, I would block from my quarterbacks, block for
my team. I'll do whatever thing you need me do.
Just make sure I'm getting my honey plus yards again,
you know, so like that that that that had to
come with it. And if I ain't getting my honey
plus yards, was out throwing a fit, meaning I'm gonna
not block.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
No, I'm still gonna block.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
But I'm being a little angry because at the end
of the day, my mindset was always I want my
guys to shine.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
I want them to be the stars. But I wanted
to be the sun.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
You know, we still we still, we still out here,
but I want to out shine. I want in a
way like like Toby Key said, I want to talk
about I want them to talk about me, you know.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
So.

Speaker 4 (22:36):
But at the end, but when I go back and reevaluate,
I tell people, I say, yeah, man, I don't mean
I was the best team player because I was fundamentally
you know, wrestling was my fundamental, which was it was
about me and wrestling. I tell people, he teach you
to be selfish because if you want to go get it,
go get it, and and and football, whatever other teams

(22:58):
you you, you depended on ten other guys. And it
teaches I like that because marriage is about teamwork.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
You know.

Speaker 4 (23:07):
Yeah it might start with you, but marriage and families,
teamwork and and working with others is teamwork.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
You know.

Speaker 4 (23:14):
Yeah it starts with you with the rest, but it's
about teamwork.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
And so those are things, you know, I like to
see in an.

Speaker 4 (23:21):
Athlete, uh, if they're a good teammate, you know, not
just a good individ you know. So though, those are things,
you know, I try to teach guys as well, that
never done. If you don't want to fight for yourself,
fight for your team, you know, fight for yourself, and
then if you ain't fighting for so those are things,

(23:45):
you know, I believe the team sports, you know, I
look at in athletes as well.

Speaker 5 (23:51):
Could you mentioned being a good teammate, I will, I
will be honest, I was not. When I look back
at some of the things I did as a teammate,
I was, this is wrestling, This is an individual sport, like,
if you're not good, that's on you. Right, But you
also mentioned do you want your yeses to be yes
and your nose to be now, so we know, you know, recruiting,
you have you have a cap maybe it's twenty five thirty.

(24:14):
I'm not one hundred percent, but there's there's ten guys
on a wrestling team, right, so you're you're going to
recruit more than one.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
Guy at a way class?

Speaker 5 (24:23):
How do you how do you bridge those gaps? Is
that where that character building comes in, where hey, you
might not start for a year or two, but if
you're a good teammate, you come in, you put the
work in for that guy who's in that starting spot.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
When it's your.

Speaker 5 (24:36):
Turn, you're going to be able to shine and there's
someone who's going to do that for you as well.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
Right, And I asked those questions. I said, all right,
what's your goal? You know what what are you going
to bring to the table to help us get back?
You know, well, you know I want to start first.
And then I'm like, okay, well what if you don't start?
So if you don't start to then go your way?
How are you going to make that better? And you know,
I want to hear those from those you know, I

(25:03):
don't want to hear it from the parents, you know,
I want to hear from the individual because once again,
this is history and I've gotten to work with guys
that that that weren't starters, but they were you know, leaders,
people listen to their words. They did all the small
things right, so what they didn't start so what you know,
they didn't put on the single it, but they represented

(25:25):
the core of.

Speaker 1 (25:26):
What we stood for. And and and I not praise
those guys and everything like that.

Speaker 4 (25:32):
I tell those guys, those are my fun guys to
to to coach because I don't have to worry about
those guys because those guys are just good people and
you know, from the soul, and those are guys I'm
looking for it.

Speaker 5 (25:46):
I know.

Speaker 4 (25:46):
You know, society puts the pressure on us to the coach.
He's winners.

Speaker 1 (25:50):
I get it, I got it.

Speaker 4 (25:51):
But once again, who's really winning because you might be
winning right now, but ten years from you, which is
supposed to do what a man is supposed to be.
So those are things, like I said, you know, I
want to show Yeah, and I'll sit down with guys
and tell them now that might scare some guys, ye know,

(26:13):
because all they're saying is show me the money, so
you know, but I let them know this is this
is who we are and what we're expecting.

Speaker 5 (26:23):
I appreciate that. I appreciate that ten year hindsight. I
had a coach. I would always say, you know things
things now. Maybe it's your work ethic, the little things,
being a good teammate, right, that's what's going to shine
ten years from now.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
Right.

Speaker 5 (26:37):
Yeah, it's cool to get your hand raised and get
a tablet podium, but when you have to wake up
and make a deadline or something like that, what you
learn here is what's going to get you farther down
the road. So I appreciate that thought. How did coming
back from Fargo? You're on the road right now. I

(26:58):
think I heard your hazard hazard there? Yeah, I won't
put it. How did how did far go go? How
to recruit and go? And how do those conversations go
with kids where it's like, hey, we might not we
might not have the money now, but if you you
invest in us now, maybe down the road we will
have the money for you.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
Once again, I mean, I don't bother these guys too much.
While they're competing. I didn't want nobody messing with me.

Speaker 4 (27:23):
You know, I come in and shake the hand, and
good wrestling, whether you win, loose, draw, you know, then
I you know, I try to find them afterwards, you know,
tell them, you know, you know, ask them what they
see and then tell them what I saw and take
it from there. But then I say, hey, let's follow
up next week. I don't know how you feeling in
the moment, you know, I don't want to bother you

(27:44):
there now, but I just want to shake hands. WoT
You know, you get guys that like, thank you, coach.
Most guys true want to give up the tournaments and
tournaments man, at the end of the day, you know,
I'm we're paying attention to the detail.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
You didn't quit.

Speaker 4 (27:59):
You know, we all have bad matches, we all get
caught things and this and that the other.

Speaker 1 (28:04):
I'm gonna see how you're going to react for those things.
You know.

Speaker 4 (28:08):
Yeah, you're women and being a baby about it. Yeah,
that could be a turna before when shake in and
you know, start looking out with me.

Speaker 1 (28:16):
You know. But but and even.

Speaker 4 (28:19):
If you reach out and I decided to reach out
and they're like, oh, man, coach, man, Yeah, I'm surprised
you called you called me, you know.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
I said, well, I'll tell you. I don't like how
you reacted, you know with that.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
And at the end of the day, I want you,
I want you to be a representative of this program.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
I can't have that.

Speaker 4 (28:38):
I don't want to see that you're gonna You're gonna lose.
There's only one dude, maybe two dudes that are going
to defeat it in college. You know, we're all gonna lose.
So at the end of the day, it's okay to lose.
It's not okay to get beat, you know, and and
and many many don't get that.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
And I'm likeey, no, we all lose. But the ones that.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
Get beat at the ones that are dropping their head
and just quitting, you know, they're the ones just letting
somebody humilitate.

Speaker 1 (29:06):
No, it's all right to loose.

Speaker 4 (29:08):
So that's those are things I conversate with the with
the recruits and everything, but I try not to try
not to mess with them that much while they're in the.

Speaker 3 (29:19):
Coach.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
I got two more for you. You know, we're in
the nil era. Things are crazy in terms of what
what people are looking for, what kind of numbers are
being thrown around and everything like that. Would you have
liked to have come up through the ni l.

Speaker 4 (29:33):
Era and even got as that I tell them. There's
one thing I tell people, I'm a hater of y'all.
I hate on you generations right now. So yeah, that
would have that would have changed the game. Now, I
probably wouldn't have been your orsue if I'm being honest,
because I know them coaches wasn't gonna pay nothing.

Speaker 1 (29:53):
But uh, probably would end up it like Sacred Hard
or somewhere. You know, you gotta do. Somebody that comes
through and say, hey, we need somebody to come represent
this program.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
Probably would have went to four different universities too, you know,
end up at segahar One and George Mason and Nacks.

Speaker 1 (30:07):
All these schools that you know you don't get that much.
And so yeah, I probably would have ended up at
those places.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
So all right, and last one I got for you.
Have you been to weld Works yet? Are you a
beer drinker?

Speaker 1 (30:22):
No? I'm not.

Speaker 4 (30:23):
Everybody clowns me. I can't hold I can't hold beer.
Just don't taste good to me.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
Okay, yeah I never was.

Speaker 4 (30:30):
A Maybe I tasted the wrong beer twenty years ago
and then started with Keystone, and so when I had
so and that was the cheap beer, and I just
stayed away from it, you know. And so, uh, you know,
I usually get clown you know, I'll sip on a
smirt Off or Mike's Heart lemonade or something like that,
you know. But uh, I just never was a beer

(30:51):
I never was a beer fan. And you know, I
mean I think I offset it. People drink beer. I'm
more drunk food, more cooking and cream shakes, you know,
cols and cookies, and so I think that's offsets.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
Okay, Well, you do have one of the best brewers
in the United States right right in your backyard now,
so if you ever change your mind, they check out
what works. It's one of the best brewers in the
country right there.

Speaker 4 (31:17):
And well, I know, I know my staff probably will.
I can go over there and hang out with them
and then try something, try something. I can try something.

Speaker 3 (31:24):
It might have hard seltzer.

Speaker 4 (31:26):
Yeah, yeah, hey, hey something thats Hey, give me something
to sip on.

Speaker 5 (31:33):
So, Coach, is there anything about the unc Bears that
we haven't spoken that you want the audience to know?

Speaker 4 (31:42):
No, I mean, obviously you mean, like we did speak
on it. It's not to make you know, we're not
making excuses. We're gonna come be quick, ready to battle
from get go. And like losing two guys, losing to
all Americans, you know that wrestling wise, it's a tough thing.
But you never know, you know, maybe that could be
a blessing in disguise too. You never know how you

(32:03):
put used to be, you know, running one way, somebody
coming in and everything like that. So so you never know.
I believe you know what happens is they happen for
a reason and so but other than that, no, I mean,
I'm excited. I'm excited for this year. I'm excited to

(32:26):
get to know, you know, some new guys. At the
end of the day. You know, like you said, I've
been been at Bingleton and been at Womb and been
at you know, every place I've been in. I still
got the guys four guys that I talked too often.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
You know, that's you know, and that's athletes. You know.

Speaker 4 (32:45):
Now they're like I said, they got families, I got jobs,
picked their brains.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
I see them. I saw a lot of them in Bark.

Speaker 4 (32:51):
You know, need to come up and give hugs and
you know that that those are relationships you want, you know,
you know those. Uh, that's well, I got you. So yay,
be ready, be ready where we're coming.

Speaker 1 (33:07):
Give us.

Speaker 4 (33:07):
We're gonna get through this year and then you know,
I'll take it.

Speaker 1 (33:11):
I'm excited to you know, to be in the game.

Speaker 3 (33:15):
Rich.

Speaker 5 (33:15):
I don't know about you, but I'm so I'm ready.
I'm ready to get back really at time.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
We've been.

Speaker 5 (33:21):
We've been.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
We've been kicking ourselves in one way or another since
we left Colorado. So any opportunity we have the universe
provises us to get back out west, we will.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
We will be there.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
We will have our Bears T shirts on for sure.

Speaker 1 (33:33):
And I'll be looking forward to shaking your guys hands.

Speaker 4 (33:36):
Because uh, you guys said, Hey, you don't be speaking
highly of LS.

Speaker 1 (33:39):
We like that.

Speaker 4 (33:40):
Man, I DEALI is you hold this accountable to tell
us what you see. I don't have a problem with that.
I love construction criticism, you know, constructive criticy and at
the end of the day, how you're living and learn.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
You're just speaking on what you see.

Speaker 3 (33:56):
Hey, man, Yeah, for let's coach. Are you a coffee drinker?

Speaker 5 (34:04):
No?

Speaker 3 (34:04):
All right, No, caffeine.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
No caffeine.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
Like I said, I'm an ssure you and I need
to break the sugar.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
Okay, all right, Coach, do you have any daily practices
or rituals you do on a regular basis to show
up as the strongest version of t on wear yes.

Speaker 1 (34:23):
And the word and bring day in and day out.

Speaker 4 (34:26):
You know, I can tell people, man, mind, my strongest
opponent is my flesh. You know, that's the toughest thing.
I got a bottle and as you you see what's
going on.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
You know many men.

Speaker 4 (34:43):
That's been the toughest thing is our desires and my flesh.
So uh, you know I got to have you know,
the Lord, you know got me day in and day
out because pride, which is part of my flesh, can
take up. And that's where you know, God says gonna be,

(35:05):
you know, a lie to be. You know, He don't
want me to be a light of him just when
things are good. He wants me to shine. He wants
he wants us to shine, you know, even more when
things aren't going away, because that's where I think kicks it.
So yeah, like I said, prayer.

Speaker 5 (35:20):
And coach and son, all right, all right, let's go coach,
What are you listening to right now?

Speaker 3 (35:30):
Music? Podcast, audio books? Are you reading anything?

Speaker 1 (35:34):
I'm listening to gospel right now.

Speaker 4 (35:37):
Actually, you know, uh, one thing, you know, people, people
that know me growing up, I was all about my music,
about music, and I was I was an R and B.
They called me the R and B Doug. I loved
R and B. I listened to R and B before
I wrestled. I didn't want the crunkness. And the hardest thing,
the hardest, the hardest thing giving up was you know.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
The world of music. It's hard to give up because
that's been part of my life for forty plus years.

Speaker 4 (36:03):
And and so you know, saying, hey, I'm playing gospel,
playing gospel, you know, you know, listening to God's music.

Speaker 1 (36:11):
You know, Wow, I'm him.

Speaker 4 (36:13):
Speak with me through that because it's easy for me.
Like I said, my best sleep is ours. You know,
into what what I want, what I'm used to.

Speaker 5 (36:25):
All right, man, cut you're talking to me. I I
love junk food, entertainment, I love I love junk music.
I love movies, television.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
So I find you there, m.

Speaker 1 (36:41):
HM, coach.

Speaker 2 (36:42):
Last one to close it out is a light harder one.
I think we already know the answer to this. You
mentioned it. Do you have a guilty pleasure? I know
you said sugar, but do you have anything specific? I
know you like the culvert shakes? Is there anything other
than that?

Speaker 1 (36:54):
Man give me?

Speaker 4 (36:56):
You give me chocolate chip cookie, you give me cooking
and cream shake, you give me for COOMPI just don't
give me no fruit and those sweets.

Speaker 1 (37:03):
Those are oxy morons. You can't. Fruit is supposed to
be healthy. You know that.

Speaker 4 (37:07):
That's not gonna make me feel good about eating it.

Speaker 1 (37:10):
Giving me fruit with a dessert, you know, dessert.

Speaker 4 (37:13):
I needed to hit the soul, you know, like you
know chocolate, you know, Caramelo is my my candy boy,
everybody knows, you know, Caramello is my weak point. So
I think those are those are the things that make
me work out more because I know I gotta sweat
that stuff out of my system, you know, otherwise, yeah,
life won't be long. So my deal is is that's

(37:36):
like that you see some love beer. You know mine
is the sweet that that's my that's my depression. You
know I'm feeling down, Get me a shake, you know.
You know my wife's season. You're like, it's one of
those days.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
So true.

Speaker 3 (37:54):
Rest are at heart rich yep.

Speaker 2 (37:58):
Well, hopefully there's not gonna be many shakes in your
future because the future is bright for the Bears and
we're excited for it. We do greatly appreciate you taking
time out of your road trip to speak with us
about what your vision for the program is. And even
though we're not in Colorado right now, we'll be rooting
from you from Afar. Like I said, UNC, Bears is
our number one Division one program that we root for,

(38:21):
so we do appreciate you taking the time out of
your day to join us and safe travels on the
rest of the route back to Greeley.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
I appreciate it, and let's do this again.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Let me know absolutely we'll check in maybe mid season
or something with you.

Speaker 1 (38:35):
All right, thank you, I appreciate you, guys.

Speaker 3 (38:37):
Thanks coach.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
All right, ladies and gentlemen, that's coach Timware from the
University of Northern Colorado. Make sure you check out the

up this wrestling season as they get into the school
year coming up here shortly. We will be back next

And then on Tuesday, we're stepping back on the track

(39:00):

National champion outdoor track and fields team this year. So
have a great rest of your week and during your weekend,
and we'll see you back here next week
