Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, man back in the saddle again. Blessed to be
back here, was a blessed to be able to see
my sister get married my little sister, doubly blessed that
I got to perform the wedding ceremony, and triply blessed
(00:21):
because I really like the man that she married, and
that kind of ties into today's episode. I could not
believe the amount of times somebody else asked me for
a knife this week. Did a lot of We grew
up a pretty poor family. I don't mean like as
(00:44):
a pity party. I just mean we were and we're
pretty self reliant because of that. I actually am kind
of thankful that I grew up that way. But old
habits die hard. Even though we're not really hurting for
money anymore. We can pay the heating bill of the
electric bill, right. We like to do a lot of
other things ourselves. My sister are the same way, so
did a lot of setting up for the wedding ourselves,
(01:07):
did a lot of tearing down of the wedding stuff ourselves.
The amount of time somebody asked me for a knife
was kind of staggering. I guess I'm not used to that.
My wife carries a knife did before I met her.
I just assume that most men, especially just carry up
a knife, period. But that's not the case. I guess,
(01:28):
especially Back East men just walk around without guns and
knives all the time like it's normal. It is what
it is. Anyway, that getting to today's after several times
being asked for a knife. My sister's new husband, who
I really really liked, and he does have his carry
(01:50):
permit and he does carry a firearm, but he asked
me for a knife, and I was just going to
give him a knife. But he lives in one of
these really really restrictive states. Don't this is a falselessumption.
Don't just assume that. Don't just assume that you can
carry whatever kind of knife because it's a knife. And
(02:12):
a lot of places this is not where he lives,
but like California, where I was a police officer LAPD
Carrying a loaded firearm is a misdemeanor. Carrying a lot
of these kind of knives that people carry as EDC knives,
pocket knives are felonies. Something like a double sided knife,
something like a auto opening knife, at least when I
(02:35):
was there. Felonies carrying a loaded handgun misdemeanor. So don't think, oh,
I'm not going to carry a gun, I'm just going
to carry a knife. Knife laws, in many ways are
more convoluted than gun laws. I don't know why there
hasn't been a big push on that, like there has
been with the Second Amendment and carry permits and constitutional carry.
But a lot of knife laws are just strange. So
(02:57):
don't just assume I'm just carrying a knife. I'm good
to go. Maybe not. You had better look into that yourself. Anyway,
he needed a two inch blade or smaller. I didn't
have a two inches smaller blade on me. He works
in a I'm not going to say exactly what he does,
(03:18):
but he works in a secure government facility. He can
have a two inch or smaller blade for what he
does not considered a weapon. Even if you have to
carry a small knife like that, I think it's still
useful to carry a knife. A knife is primarily a tool.
I stabbed zero people getting ready for this wedding. I
cut a lot of stuff. I use my knife as
(03:42):
a tool for a lot of things. I used a
multi tool which I carried a leatherman for a lot
of things. Pliers hammer knife right for a lot of things,
stab zero people. A knife is primarily a tool, so
all is not lost. Today's episode Little Knives Baby Knives.
(04:05):
Several reasons you might want to consider carrying a baby knife.
Number one, Legally, that's what you're allowed to have. Number two,
it's a secondary knife, as in, you carry a I'm
a big fan of DC and carrying a full sized,
you know, full grip three to five inch blade fixed
(04:26):
blade knife. I live in Free America, though I carry
a full sized fighting handgun on my dominant side, and
I carry a you know, good size fixed bladeknife on
my support side. Also a defensive option, a defensive tool.
It's also a really good utilitarian tool. That said, for
(04:48):
you know, a lot of day to day tasks, I
don't need a full size fixed blade knife, and I
like to keep it sharp in pristine if I'm carrying
like my Demco Magna cut or my tops tracker number three, like,
I like to keep those things pretty sharp in case
I need them for something really important. If I'm cutting
open boxes or tape, or I need to scrape something,
(05:10):
I don't need a giant fixed blade knife for that.
In fact, a lot of times it's less practical than
a really small knife, so I will often carry a
smaller knife. So the second reason is you want to
keep your primary sharp and not abuse it. But you
want a smaller, let's say, knife that you're not afraid
to beat up. A really small, just tiny blade, utilitarian tool.
(05:33):
It's got some other stuff on there, maybe it's just
a knife. And the third reason is maybe you can
share the gift of EDC with someone else. Blessings are
meant to be shared. I'm sure if you carry a knife,
then you know how nice it is to have a
knife on you, kind of like a flashlight. It's really nice.
(05:57):
Flashlight would be a good one too, But today's focus
is to be on small knives. This is a gift
you could give somebody. A lot of people that wouldn't
carry a gun, that wouldn't carry a big fixed blade knife. Right,
They're not going to walk around with a k bar
in their teeth downtown. They're not going to carry a
bread in ninety two on their hip, or even a
glock nineteen. They're not going to carry a decent sized
(06:20):
fixed blade knife. Not even probably gonna carry a big,
full size folding pocket knife. They're just not going to
do it. But they would carry a small, little folding
pen knife, pocket knife. They would carry that, right, that's
just their barriers. Like some people. They wouldn't say they're
anti gun, but they would have a lever action, but
they wouldn't have an air of fifteen. Consider this like
(06:44):
the lever action of the pocket knife world. It's less assuming,
less aggressive, less intimidating to somebody that's not a knife person,
that's not an EDC person. You know, when they go
into a public place, they don't look around to check
all the exits and make sure that they're in a
position of tactical advantage. Not for that kind of guy,
for the average guy that they're either going to carry
(07:05):
this or nothing. Maybe this will be the gateway drug
and make that a good term instead of a bad term.
Don't use drugs. Kids, to make this the gateway for EDC.
That they start out with this knife and they like that,
and they see a slightly bigger knife and they want
to carry that. I would not recommend these again, unless
(07:26):
you're just getting into the EDC and this is all
you're going to carry. I wouldn't recommend these as your
only knife. But for these reasons. It's all you can
legally have. You want a small backup knife, a backup blade.
Hesitate to even called some of these knives, so backup
blade something you are not going to cry about if
you abuse r chip or whatever. Or to just share
(07:50):
the gift of DC with somebody that maybe wouldn't get
into it or wouldn't carry it if it were bigger.
A lot of these are so small they put in
their back and they forget they have it, and they're like, oh,
I need a knife. Oh wait, they have a knife.
So with that, what are some really good options? Well,
I posted this in the chat and I got a
bunch of responses. My number one recommendation because I've actually
(08:12):
used that. I actually bought one for my wife, and
that is the cold Steel Tough Light. I think it's
the Mini. They make a tough light that would be
a pretty good if you carry a folding pocket knife,
it wouldn't be a bad just go to pocket knife.
The Mini actually has a sub two inch blade. They're
(08:35):
pretty good utilitarian knives. Think of it kind of like
a box cutter. That's way, you know, more robust of
a blade than a box cutter. It's kind of a
I don't know, sheep's foot kind of blade, straight straight
cutting edge with a rounded down front blade or front
(08:59):
of the knife. It's a mini. I'm not telling you
to you know, getting a knife fight with this thing.
It's a small sub two inch blade knife. It allows
you to get a decent grip, and it's really good
for small utilitarian tasks. And that's the cold steal tough
light Mini comes in a bunch of different colors. It's
got a good pocket clip. That's my number one recommendation.
(09:22):
Now this is an arbitrary number for me. For the
things I'm gonna mention. There are a lot a lot
of places have a sub three inch roll. A sub
three inch roll would really open a lot more doors,
but we're gonna stick with sub two inch. Here the
sub two inch rule. There is the spider Co bug
micro size one point twenty seven inch blade. I I
(09:47):
just don't like the way that spider Cos look. They're
a great knife. A lot of people really like the
way they look. That's you know, some people like the
way corvettes looks. Some people like the way mustangs look. Whatever, Right,
it's it's a good knife. Spider Co makes a decent knife.
This is one of their more affordable small spider cows,
but it very much has that classic spider Co aesthetic.
(10:08):
I think that would be a good choice for this.
That's the one that I picked out, and it's the
spider Co Bug micro size. Now. One of the guys
in the chat, Matthew. He was very excited. There are
a lot of these kind of tools. They may or
may not be legal, make sure you check. But they're
like an ice pick. I'm gonna describe him as its
(10:30):
kind of like an ice pick or a very small
knife on the end of a shaft with a ring
on the back. Actually, when I was the commander of
a tactical team to stop active shooters, there was a
guy that carried one of these in his vest. It
wasn't his go to knife, it wasn't his go to blade.
It was just like an extra tool that he carried
in his plate carrier as a get off me tool.
And that's kind of what they're good for. Sure, you
(10:52):
could use him to cut open a box, but they're
more of a small close quarters melee weapon. But they
do have a small, more than two inch blade. There's
a lot of these. He sent me some Amazon links here.
This one's the best Stanelli Creations as one hundred and
fifteen dollars for that little knife. Also send me a
(11:14):
Bastonelli Creations, a little push dagger with a one point
something inch knife, even if it's a sub two inch
for where he works. I don't think in the state
that he lives a push dagger is kosher. I think
that would be a felony. So, but my wife often
carries just as a side note, she often carries a
very small pushdagger on her run. She runs marathons, trains
for marathons, training for a Spartan race. Right now, do
(11:38):
you often you know has a neck knife? Is a
very small push dagger. The much more affordable than one
hundred and some dollars. It's the Cold Steel Urban Pal,
the Cold Steel Urban Pal. I think this is her
second one. They're phenomenal little get off me tools, little
push daggers. They weigh next to nothing. She likes to
(11:58):
wear hers around her neck for and she's running. You
could put them on a keychain. They're a cool little
push dagger. Pushdaggers are felonies in many places, though, so
make sure you check that. But the Cold Steel Urban
pal Is. They're really cool, affordable little push dagger. They
make much bigger ones like the safe Maker and stuff,
but that's outside the scope of today's episode. Matthew, say
(12:20):
another Amazon link, and it's going to be the cc
NA KU. I've never heard of that brand at all.
C one one, three four. It does say it's D
two steel, so that's good. And it's kind of one
of those self defense kind of tools. Really small blade
on a shaft with a ring on the back, and
that one is much more affordable twenty four dollars and
(12:42):
some change. I assume it's made in China or somewhere
like it. But if if your only limitation is a
sub two inch blade and you want a defense tool,
that will probably be the best one. I'm thinking more
of like EDC for every day, everyday tasks, something they'll
carry in their pocket. One that one of the guys
(13:02):
sent that I didn't know about is the Gerber Pribrid. It's,
you know, the we talked about, like the old school
box cutters. It's kind of like that, but much smaller,
with a pride bar and it looks like a bottle
opener on the back. That's really cool. It also has
like a rope cutter section in there. That's a really
(13:22):
cool looking tool. I kind of want one of those
for the reason we talked about the secondary knife, but
that looks really really cool. I don't know if I
would get that for him, because I don't know if
he's the kind of person that's going to change the
blades out on it. But the Pribrid Gerber Pribrid Utility
(13:43):
that is a really cool looking little utility tool. I
like that a lot. That was sent by Patrick. Okay,
the one that I currently carry as a secondary I'm
actually not crazy about it. You may like it better
than me. I wish it had a pocket clip because
it falls down into my pocket and I don't really
(14:05):
like that. A lot of people wouldn't care. But it's
the Kershaw cinder. It's a very tiny blade. It's probably
under an inch, very small handle. It's got a bottle
opener on the back. I don't really care about that.
I'm not the kind of guy that opens bottles regularly.
If you do want to adc a bottle opener with
a small blade, it would kind of be pretty cool
(14:26):
for that. But I'm just letting you know that's what
I most recently got a is a little small blade
in my pocket and one of the ones that I
used to carry that I don't anymore. That is a
really really good choice. One of the guys reminded me
of it. That's Troy and it is the Weatherman Micra.
This is like the smallest, most elegant, adorable little multitool.
(14:53):
It's kind of like a you know, honeye shrunk the Leatherman.
Instead of pliers. It has a very small pair of
s scissors. It also has a very very small knife blade.
It has you know, different screwdriver bits and tweezers, and
I think a little file on there. I have one
of these and carried it for a long time. I
(15:14):
don't anymore. Honestly, I think I just kind of lost it.
I don't know where it is. But these are very good,
and they're very sleek and very small. These are really
really good. And again that's the Leatherman Micro. They are
a really cool small multi tool. If you want to
carry something more, you know, diverse than just a little
(15:38):
small knife, it's your secondary tool. You often find yourself
kneeding scissors, needing a file, needing a screwdriver, and it's
really sleek and really spelt. That's the Leatherman micro. Now,
Gerber also makes one called the Gerber I think it's
called the Gerber Dime. That is a little bit bigger.
(15:59):
It has pliers, so if you want pliers instead of
the scissors. I think it's a little bit fatter, a
little bit heavier, but it's still a micro multi tool
for lack of a better term. And on the Gerber,
I talked about that Pride Bar utility knife. They've had
one for a long time called the EAB the exchange
of blade. Those are really affordable. There are several other
(16:19):
companies that make those now. Those would also be a
good choice, especially those exchangeable blade knives if you are
the kind of person that is just not going too
sharpen a knife. Now, I don't know how they would
measure that if you live in a sub two inch
place or working a sub two inch place. I don't
know if they're going to measure the entire length of
(16:41):
the entire razor blade or just what sticks out of
the knife, because usually you only stick out half of
the blade and the other half you can't do anything with.
I guess it would depend on how strict the security
was but the EAB, the Pride bar tool by Gerber,
a bunch of the different knockoff. There's a couple of
(17:01):
little micro knives that use the old Exacto knife blades.
Those are pretty cool. I don't know any one company
for those. There's a lot of those on like Etsy
and stuff like that. It's like a little tiny folding
knife that uses those really small exact O knife blades.
And I think exact O Knife is a brand, but
(17:22):
you probably know what I'm talking about. Those really small
kind of surgical scalpel triangle style knives, those also would
be a good choice. And I'm going to close out
with a classic, and that is the Swiss Army Victoria
Knox Classic. This is like the classic little baby pocket knife.
(17:44):
I think that most people think of, I don't care,
the staunchest probably the staunchest pacifist, you know, blue haired
liberal barista probably would not have a problem with somebody
carrying one of these little baby Swiss Army Knife Classics.
They really teeny tiny blade. I think it's a nail
(18:07):
file with a kind of screwdriver slot on the end
of it, which that the screwdriver slot's actually pretty handy
a very small pair of scissors. I don't know how
they make scissors that small that actually work, but they do.
It also comes if I remember, with like a toothpick
on one side and a little small pair of tweezers,
(18:30):
And actually a little small pair of tweezers can come
in pretty handy for stuff pulling out splinters, cactus spurs,
things like that. And they come in a bunch of
different colors if you care about the color. But that
little Swiss Army Victorian Knox classic, I don't know that
anybody would have a problem with one of those. Those
(18:51):
are just like the most unassuming little baby pocket knife,
and they actually do come in pretty handy. I used
to eat ec one of those for quite a while.
Baby knives and the tactical tip is gonna be more
of a philosophy for this. If you don't carry a knife,
and maybe you're not down with just going out and
(19:12):
grabbing a big fixed blade knife and carrying it, maybe
this is a good place to start. Maybe think about
carrying a really small EDC knife. It's better than no knife.
Or if you already are on the EDC train, consider
on your neck. Stop sharing that message with somebody else
(19:35):
that you think we would come in handy. Somebody you
know that you care about or that you think should
that doesn't carry a knife. You say, you know, here
you go, here's a small, little EDC knife. Now you
can have a knife. I don't know what the ratio is,
(19:57):
but I imagine a lot of people, for they have
one in their pocket, and they go to look for
a knife, and they have one on them. A couple
of times they realize the let's even just say, convenience
of having a knife on you. So just something to
(20:17):
think about. The tactical verse of the day from the
Book of Second Kings, this is about Josiah, and it says,
and he did what was right in the sight of
the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his
father David. He did not turn aside to their right
(20:40):
hand or to the left. What a beautiful eulogy, right,
What a beautiful thing to be said about you at
the end of your days. I pray men that we
all stay on the narrow path and not turn from
it to the right or to the left. And if
we do that, we get back quickly before where we
(21:00):
get lost. Thanks for listening, and have a blessed Day
