Speaker 1 (00:10):
Welcome to amazing women and men of power, legends and
night times.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
I'm your host, Raven to talk show Maven and Today, Today, Today,
we're rolling out the virtual red carpet for a true
music legend, someone's who smoothed vocals and timeless hits have
shaped soul music history four fifty years. Oh yeah, he's

(00:37):
a founding member of the Stylistics, one of the most
iconic vocal groups of all times. You know the song stop,
look and listen to your Heart. You are everything. Bet
you buy golly Wow. You make me feel brand new.
You know, it's the kind of music that takes your
back way back and stays in your soul, your heart,

(00:58):
your gut, forever her And now, for the first time
in almost two decades, the Stylistics are back with a
brand new album, Falling in Love with My Girl, which
actually dropped February twenty first, So run, don't walk, and
get it. This album is stacked with legends including Shania Twain,
Ronnie Wood, Gene Simmons, the Elton John vand Tower of Power.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
And that's just the name of f you.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
So you know what I like to say, If you're standing,
sit down, and if you stand up because the man
is here. Oh yeah, oh yeah, love, yes.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yes, yes, I'm so excited.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
How are you doing, Reverand I'm doing great? How were you?

Speaker 2 (01:43):
I am peachey king.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Because I get to spend a little time with you
and find out more. Now, I want to start out
by getting this out the way already that in two thousand,
I believe Russell Tompkins Junior something that came as a
complete surprise to the rest of us. But tell us
more about that moment. And then we got to get

(02:07):
into the good stuff.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Okay, wow, I didn't realize how long that's been. But
like I guess, it's like any marriage. You have your
problems and you have your arguments. And well, Russell was
just getting to the point that he was actually tired
of singing. He said he was singing too many songs.

(02:29):
And I said, well, you recorded, you know, so why
not singing? And it was just getting bad. And we
were in Cleveland, Ohio, and when we came off stage,
he said, that's it. That's my last show. And he
said what he said, Yeah, I'm done, and I mean
it was a few more words said than that, and

(02:54):
he left and Herb and I looked at each other
and said, well, I'm not ready to give this up,
are you? I said no, And yeah, like you said
we if you want to keep working, you have to
try to find the best replacement. And we were lucky
enough to find someone close enough to the sound that

(03:18):
enabled us to still work, you know. And that happened.
And then we heard through the gray vine that Russell
was doing a solo thing, and then we heard that
Russell was putting together another stylist. He said, oh no,
he can't do that. And then we went to court,
we but not directly in court battle between lawyers, and

(03:40):
we had the rights to the name, and he went on,
you know. And so look, we wish him the best.
I can't expect any blessings and wish ill on someone else,
so I would never do that. I still love Russell.
He don't ever want to speak to Urban Eye.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
But that's demons, that's not yours.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Well, I called you, Let's just give him another hand
because Aaron have the right attitude.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
It takes the team to make a drink.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Okay, yes, it's not always about one person.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
So we are just blessed. I feel blessed anyway to
have you. Okay, So now.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
You and the other three members is a three for two.
It's three now, it's three okay.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
So it's yourself, Urt Morrel and Jason Sharp is our
least singer. But I said new le singer. But Jason
has been with us for fifteen years, so he's uh,
he's new vocally to our fan base, but he's not
new to us.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Okay, okay, Well you all sound good. I've been listening
to the album. I have my favorites, of course, falling
in Love the main one with my girl, like infatuation.
I found that pretty nice too, okay, and yes I
will if I failed. So far, I'm still listening. That's okay,
I picked so far?

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Okay, Okay, great, great, that's great.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
So in fact, let's talk about falling in Love because
that hit just a few days ago. Falling in love
with my girl then almost I guess twenty years since
the Stylistics release news music.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Is that correct?

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yes? Yeah, it's about that time. Yeap.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Why now? Why did you guys say it's time?

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Well, you know, it's funny. We work constantly, so it's
not like we were looking for a new record deal
and things have changed so much from the seventies. I mean,
you want to get a record company that's going to
put the cost of the album and blah blah blah

(05:48):
blah blah blah. So now we're constantly working. I mean
we do a UK tour every year of eight weeks,
we go to to Japan, and we tour around the States.
But just gentleman Tom Quitlin, who's the producer of this album.

(06:09):
He opened the show for us in England three tours,
and his last tour last year, he said, I asked you,
would you guys be interested in recording. He said sure,
and he presented a couple of ideas. He said, well,
let me work on a couple of things. And then
Tom got back in touch with us about six months

(06:30):
later and said, well, this is the idea that I had,
and you know, I have affiliations with this person and
that person, and I'm the Elkin John's band, and let's
do a project and let's feature of the artists on
this said okay, now, in all honesty, we were a

(06:53):
little worried of having someone with a rock bass, oh yeah,
and coming from England to produce us. Let's talk facts.
Black producers all along, you know. So we didn't want
to lose our fan base. We didn't want tiro. That
was just totally out of our vein of music. So

(07:17):
but when Tom presented a couple of songs to us
that we liked, and we said, okay, this will work,
that'll work. He came to fielding. I think we recorded
three songs at first, and then he presented other songs.
We sitting there in the studio listening to the material,
and then he played the song that Shanaia did, Shanaia

(07:39):
Train did. I heard eight bars of that. I said,
we got to do the song. I love this song. Yep,
I don't have to hear no more. Let's do this song.
He said, okay, let me go back to her and
find out if she'd be interested. And he went back
and he came back. She put us stuff down and
we put our vocals down. All the artists that are

(08:00):
featured on this we didn't know until afterwards who all
was on it, you know. And he didn't come back
and said, okay that this one did the guitar part,
or this one did it. And it wasn't until after
everything was finished we're listening to it, he said, oh,
that song, So he said, like, Todd, why didn't you
tell us? You know, we had all these like super

(08:23):
rock stars on this album. We had no idea when
we were recording it.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Wow, but a pleasant surprise, right.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
And it's almost a definitely to collaborate, you know, with
other people, because then you're tapping into their audiences and
that's so cool.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Right exactly exactly like when we did the song with Shanaiah,
we never had a per say, a country song that
could go possibly country. I'm not predicting anything, but by
her being a country icon of artist, maybe we could
start getting some country music. Even though some of our

(09:02):
white partners think that black people can't sing country music,
but they got to realize what our music has always
been about, you know. So I don't think we're going
to run into that problem, but it'd be good to
have another area that our music can can grow in.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Yeah, well you know we are really rocking country music
a yeah one.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Right.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
I just want to remind the listener's real quick area
that this is big news the music lovers.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
The way is over.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
The Stylistics brand new album is out now. This twenty
one track masterpieces Packed that I say pack, yes, packed
with legends and a fresh news sound while keeping that classic,
you know, stylistic.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
I want to be with my baby Magic.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Arion.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Tell our listeners where they can grab your do they
call it?

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Well, what do they call it?

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Something else?

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Well, you know what it's. It's it's because I'm from
old school. You know. Yeah, I have a new album.
They said, well, it's not a new album. I said, yes,
it is, and in fact, they sent me copies. I
have an actual album plus seeing yeah you know so, yes,
it's an album and it's available on all music platforms,

(10:26):
which is totally different than it was in nineteen seventy.
You know, you had to have a distributor. Now we
do have a distributor. And from what I've been told,
I don't know whether it's still the case, but I
think jay Z's publishing company might be pushing this, and

(10:48):
that's a story. I just hope it's true. True. Yeah,
but you don't.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Need j this. I listened to them.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
I told you what some of my favorites, and I
there's still you know there's one.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
I haven't listen to them all.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
You know, it's so funny though, you know I'm used
to I'm like you I'm from old school.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
I'm in my seventies, so you know, oh my goodness,
thank you.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
You know what they say, I'm seventy five, right, And
I did an interview earlier and the guy said to me,
I guess well, black don't crack.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Yeah, you say on an interview that I don't know
how far back that you were. I think seventy four. Then,
so you're seventy five. I'll be turning the big seventy.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Four in April. So yeah, you're from another mother. How
cool is that?

Speaker 3 (11:33):
There you go, there you go, and you look great.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Now, the Stylistics live shows are legendary, and you performed
all over the world, including packed stadiums in South Africa.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Right, that's just the name a few.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
You're like you said, you're in your seventies and you're
still performing. First of all, that deserves a class because
I also.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
Heard on one of your interviews you were.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
Talking about, you know that you feel blessed because there's
a lot of times that you're performing with other people
and they, you know, may have some kind of you know,
something that's going on with them physically, and you were
saying that you were feeling good and stuff, and I
would love for you to share with the listeners. You know,

(12:23):
how different is it now performing versus then or is
there any difference? And the reason I want you to
share that because I'm a big believer that keep going
till you can't stop, Yes, as long as you have
that same passion. So we only got a femor in
this left, but I want to find out how you

(12:43):
feel about that.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
I always like Toshire the listeners, and.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
You're that you know when when I look back when
we started, I mean we were like eighteen seventeen, eighteen
eighteen years old, you know, so there's things that eighteen
and nineteen year olds do going away from home for
the first time being away from home. And we were

(13:08):
never about drugs and alcohol, so that wasn't part of it.
But no, never, never was quite amazing.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Right.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
We can't just let you say that because people when
they get into entertainment, they get into that really quick.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
So that's yeah, awesome to hear that.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
And it was around us, you know, but it wasn't
necessary for us, and we didn't. I know, I have
so many opinions about what makes a person do that,
and I think if you got so low self esteem
that you feel that you have to be a certain
way with your peers for them to appreciate you. And

(13:48):
then you do these things. And I've never been one
to need that, you know, from anyone, so I never
really did it. I'm not going to say I don't
have a cocktail or Hennessy before I go on stage.
That's just warms me up and get the cobwebs out
of my throat. But everything else, yeah, everything else has

(14:11):
never been a part of our lives. So I think
that's been part of our longevity. And then we have
a positive attitude too. I never expected things to last
as long as he did, so we always say, look, okay,
if we do get some money, don't buy that manching
on the hill, swimming pools and all that stuff. We
live pretty much a humble life. I want to be

(14:33):
able to keep this when all this is done. So
that was the way we thought, and that's the way
we live till the day.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Oh Harry, I'm looking at the time. I want to cry.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
My time is we got to do another one? Yes?

Speaker 2 (14:47):
We do.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
But you know what, I'm just gonna ask you, maybe
three real quick rapid fire questions.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
So I need some rapid fire answers.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
Okay, oh my goodness, cher Gun. Remember remember I'm seventy
five now, it's like take mere a minute.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Okay, make them easy, breezy okay, okay.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Shoot a song that you did that you love love
love love to.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
Perform, well, you make me feel brand new one of it.
And my second best is Payback as a Dog.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Remember that one. Pay Back is a Dog.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
Okay, it was a B side. I can't remember what
was the hits side, but it's on our second album.
But Payback is a Dog is one of my favorites.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Okay, last thing and that is what's next? Real quick?

Speaker 3 (15:35):
Well, we're promoting this album. They got us jumping all
over the place doing this and that, and we're getting
ready for our UK tour in October, which is presenting
this album's first time I'm going over to England with
a new project, even though we toured the UK every year,
so this is going to be different this year.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
It's going to be different. Oh my god, this has
been so wonderful. Thank you Ariyan Love for being here,
and thank you for continuing on with your great, great music.
It's just amazing you guys.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Thank you for supporting. Let's love you all right.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
