not least, thank you as always to our friend Shanno

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Even though this episode.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Will be shortened I think short short shortened. That's because
I'm normally joined by multiple co hosts, and tonight I
just have one. And of course it is my lovely wife.
It's the best one, the best, the.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Best co host.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
You losers who aren't here, it's fine, Actually, Matt Matt
camp participaties.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
And yes, so.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
You've heard her on multiple podcasts before. You know that voice.
It is my lovely wife and our awesome co host,
Catherine kath Hello, it's me Cat, It's some Metherine.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Hello, everybody, Hi, Hi.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Are you. Are you excited for the end of spooky season?

Speaker 1 (02:44):
I know you are.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
I am.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Mostly I'm excited to take down the decorations that I
put up from the dollar store on the door, like
the spiderwebs that are just getting in the way of
opening and shutting the door. Now and I've crushed spiders
in the door several times.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Now, yep.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
And I'm like, when is Halloween gonna be over?

Speaker 4 (03:05):
So I can just take down these damned divations, just that,
just that one thing bothers me. The rest of them
I can stay, they can hang out for a while.
I mean, Bridgett loves pumpkins. She's saying pumpkins she loves.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
She really does her saying pumpkin will never get old
to me personally, and it's really cute to hear. And
she does love pumpkins. So she is my daughter. In
addition to your daughter looking like you and acting like me,
I loving pumpkins.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
I think it's just a blonde hair really that gets
everyone saying she looks like me.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
I think it's we'll see how she evolves and grows up.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
And I think that you know, obviously, her love of
pumpkins is stems from you considering that you have a
pumpkin tattooed on your body.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
True, true, True.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
She loves bacon like I do. I love bacon and
she loves bacon. So I mean there's certain things that
you kind of get as she goes.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
I think she's a good end of both of us. Yes,
But with that being said, Cat, I'm very excited because
tonight we are talking about something that we did get
a babysitter for to go up and do just last
week last Thursday, right.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Yes, Thursday, for the Fright and Bite.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Yes, this is Tuesday that we're recording us right now.
Last Thursday, we did have the opportunity to get up
to Abington, Massachusetts to do one of my favorite things
that we do every year and something that we've done
i think every single year that we've had the podcast,
which is go to and review Barrett's Haunted Mansion. And

(04:39):
this year, given all of the things that we had
going on this particular month in terms of hants and
hops and some horror trivia and you know, having a
daughter and trying to you know, balance everything that we
could with Spooky Season, otis you come down here the
Spooky hond dog can join us right now if he's

(05:00):
so interested, because it's just me and Kat and he's
not going to bark at matter Andrews, So if he
wants to come down, we can. But my point is
that I was fearful late in the Halloween season that
I thought we might not get to Barrett's for the
first time in about ten or twelve years, because I've been.
I've been every year. You have.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
I missed it when I was pregnant.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yes, yes, well you went to these you did not
go into the Haunted House, And yes, that was about
what a week before Bridget was born, probably had two.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
Weeks because he was Maria at the Yelhouse, Tony's wife,
and we were both sitting at the yell Hoouse, very pregnant,
being like, you guys enjoy the Haunted House, and we're
gonna sit here and eat buffalo chicken dip and the
desserts and hang out on this porch and just relax
while everyone else does their thing.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
I wouldn't.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Want to go into this, no one. I think they
advise right on their thing that if you're a pregnant
woman not to go into their haunted attraction.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
I don't think that they advised that.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
But anyway, it's it's it's fun because you know, obviously
Andrew was not available tonight. Matt did not come with
us to Barrett's last week. So I like this because
you and I have been going together to Barrett's for
no I know that, but I'm saying you and I

(06:26):
with other people, have been going to Barrett's about as
long as we've been dating together this time around, because
I mean in high.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
School and college, like I went, I've been going for a.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
Very very I want to say, so like we we've
been going since before we were together, but we you
and I have been together for a very long time.
And I feel like that's a different story for a
different podcast. But you and I have been together to
this event several times.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
And like I was going back through.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
My photos, how many photos?

Speaker 1 (06:59):
The first photos that I have of us together are
in twenty thirteen, us at the Alehouse on my birthday.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Oh yes, because the Abington Ail House.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
If you go to the Abbington House on your birthday,
you get an entire free dinner.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Your meal is free, and you have to show them
your license.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
I don't know if that's still the case. I know
we haven't tried to your apps.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
But your dinner, whatever you pay for your meal is free.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Yeah for Fortingtonelhouse, but that's all year round, that's not
just in October. But we would go obviously because your
birthday is on the sixteenth, and you get to do
all the spooky things on your birthday.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
So you get free dinner and Haunted house.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Yeah cool. I mean I feel like, aside from the
original Spooky World Barrett's Hunted Mansion, and I've talked about
this several times in the podcast, is the haunted attraction
that holds the biggest place, like in my heart. I
started going at a very early age. My mom volunteered here.
You've worked there, I did work there, and growing up

(08:00):
in Randolph, Massachusetts, this is about two towns over, and
it was the most accessible haunted attraction for me, and
I always wanted to go every year because it was
always my thing. It was always way easier to go
to than it was to drive Spooky World or whatever
other haunted attraction that was up there in whatever other area.
So it's always awesome when you have something that's local
and close to you.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
So I mean Spooky World when it was in Foxborough
was a little bit more accessible for a couple of years.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Whatever that was. I forget the years it was. But
and it's always the same.

Speaker 4 (08:32):
Well, I mean, Barretts has evolved over the years because
they used to have like Mount Blood Mini putt.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Oh, I missed Mount Blood.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
I loved awesome, like you, they had other little things,
but they didn't.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Now they have the bigger attraction. I already forget the
name of it.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
It's it's it's called it's called condemned.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
It's called condemned. You used to be called the cell.
It's been called several things.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
But I mean, if there's any way that they can
put a mini put back in there, that was awesome,
that was so cool.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
I know, well, I missed many in general.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
I feel like mini petts have kind of disappeared.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
I missed Mount Blood, but I would say so obviously
the mount land where the second attraction and the outdoor
attraction is this year and every year. So if you
had it all to do over again, Cat's world, would
you keep Mountain Blood or would you have the second attraction?
I mean, I feel like I know the obvious answer here,

(09:25):
but I'm interested in your answer.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
I think I did my blood Wow.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Mostly, well, it's because you love.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
But I love I love man and I've been since
I was I mean since I was a little kid.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
But also I mean I don't even would Mount Blood
open you around?

Speaker 2 (09:44):
I think it was no.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
I think the Mini I think the Mini golf course
was open year round. Yeah, I think that was opening around.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
I would take that in a second over condemned.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
But if it was only open during this season for
that month, I mean, and that's also why I would
take it, because I could go there whenever. But yeah,
if it's just it was just open during the month
of October, because I know they had the blood like
fountains and stuff, And I mean that might make sense
in like June, but I mean it would at the
same sense because you'd be next to the Hunted House.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
Sure. Well.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
So one of the things I feel like Barrett's has
always had in its advantage is the fact that everywhere
around it, including Mount Blood, the Haunted Mansion, and the
Abington Aale House, has always always always gone all in
on the Halloween theming, which I think makes it a
great destination for people that love Halloween absolutely and people

(10:35):
that love haunt attractions, which I feel like is why
I gravitate towards this event as much as I have,
because I absolutely love Halloween, and again, it was so
close to me, and it's obviously so well done. It's
it's it's great every single year and this year's no different.
So but I digressed a little bit there, so we almost.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
You know, we found to terror quoting it's like combat,
Carl finds a way, like Mike and Cat find away.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
Cat find a way. Combat Carl never gives up. Combat
Carl finds a way. Jesse never gives up. Jesse finds away.
So yes, I never gave Mike and Cat found find
somebody to babysit our daughter for a few hours.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Thank you, Craig. Shout out to Craig.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
And the th day before the final week, okay, And
I'm so we did get to.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
For me, it probably would have been the first time
in like ten years that.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
I hadn't gone. And we just had such a busy
October between everything we're doing for the show and our
daughter live events that we've been trying to do. So
it's been it's very busy month in a good way.
And I was just I was very fearful that we
weren't going to be able to get here, and I

(12:00):
realized that this mini review slash recommendation is going to
come out very late. We're recording this on Tuesday night,
October twenty ninth. It'll be out on Wednesday, October thirtieth,
just in time for their final weekend, which I know
they have some very special events coming up. And I
will say, if you're listening to this, go please go.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
And take advantage of it for their last weekend.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Go bang it out, Go Halloween, Go the nights after,
Go to November first, Go November Secon. Yeah, yep, I
think they're open throughout the entire weekend if I remember correctly,
so I can verify that. But anyway, so Barrett's Haunted
Mansion is operating in their thirty third year, which is
absolutely incredible.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
It makes me feel old.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Yeah, me too, Me too. And last year it was
so incredible for them. They were featured as part of
the Legendary Haunt Tour, which is a big thing that
the trans World Haunt Show does when they highlight several
haunted attractions from a particular area of the country. Last year,
they selected Barrett's Hunted Mansion along with Haunted Overload and

(13:13):
Fright Kingdom in New Hampshire. So there was a little
tour you could do with Barrett's Haunted Overload and also
Fright king That's so cool.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
When I saw that, I was like, if I could
do that, I would do that in a heartbeat.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
I mean, we have logistically with kids, like it's kind of.

Speaker 4 (13:27):
Tough if if there was no kids or no sorts
of obstacles or dogs.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
I mean, Jesus, I.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Always read about the damn dog. Oh we've haund a babysitter,
what about the damn dog.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
I'm like, but yeah, if I could have done that that,
I would have done that in a heartbeat.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
I mean it sounds perfect. You have like a whole
itinerary trip planned.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Yeah, with stops at restaurants as far.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
I think they stopped at Salem after they stopped at Barrett's,
then going out on New Hampshire. That's a lot of fun,
so awesome. So it's not something you can get every year,
but last year it was the thing, and I was
so happy to see that they got the recognition that
they deserve and also a few Another huge thing I
should say for Barrett's was they were featured last year

(14:12):
on a show called Spooky Kisses Haunts and that is
a yep, it's a show that's available.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
You can watch it Amazon Prime.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
And also I believe food Tubo and girl that goes
around to different haunted attractions throughout the country and hid them,
and she did a fantastic job highlighting not only but
was it in the event because I know that in

(14:46):
talking to the people behind this are uh they are
working incredibly hard pretty much from the time they end
their season a particular year until they started up the
next year. They're always working hard on I'm trying to say,
you know, we've been fortunate enough to talk to Mary
on this podcast. I feel so bad because when we
did have the chance to interviewer, our audio quality was

(15:09):
not very great. But she was super nice and we
had a great time talking to her.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
And great to see her. When you go to Barrett's,
No she's in the ticket booths, just like watching everyone
walk in absolutely checking everything out.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
You'll see her.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
She's always there. Like you know, you walk around, you
go to the merch booth, sometimes she's there. She's hanging around.
She's always hanging So shout out to Mary, great person,
and Barrett's Haunted Mansion is just a great event. And
spoiler alert, I mean I'm kind of biased here, I'm
gonna say that you should absolutely check out Barrett's for
twenty twenty four if you have the opportunity to again

(15:42):
in the shortened rest of the season. I know it's late,
and I'm sorry that it's so late, but the event's fantastic.
It's great. And this year, in their thirty third year,
the theme of their event, Catherine, as you were excited
to hear, was games.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Yes, yes, let.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Me read.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
The Barrett's Haunting. It's not a game. In the shadowed
corners of Abington, whispers of the quote unquote game master
chill the He forces them into increasingly increasingly danger and

(16:25):
to test their wits, ignorance, and will to live. The
game Master's hide out, rumored pieces of psychological and physical
trials where escape outwit.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
Their captor and five his nightmarish.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Trials, leaving fear in his desperation of his weight. Will
you make it out? Its name? So that's the theme
for Barretts this year. Kind of sounds like squid squid
game a little bit.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
I never watched squid games.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
I didn't either. I heard it was very similar.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
To that, though thinking it was going to be more
like a Saw theme. There was Jigsaw was in there
though right there was.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
I mean, no, they can't have Jigsaw because they didn't
have the right.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
What I was. I felt like that.

Speaker 2 (17:11):
But before we get into the mansion.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
Also, of course we mentioned in replacement of Mount Blood
there is Condemned. Their second attraction, the outdoor attraction, and
Condemned this year is also called Condemned Again and themed
to mcteal Industries, A Better Tomorrow starts Today. In October
nineteen ninety eight, a catastrophic nitrogen oxide leak at mcteal's

(17:32):
Industries triggered alarms and the panic in the surrounding community.
Despite the staff's desperate attempts to contain the breach, they
suffered severe chemical burns, and the leak continued unchecked. The
facility's management, driven by corporate greed, chose to keep production running,
sacrificing public safety for profit. By September thirteenth, two thousand
and three, the area was placed under a total lockdown,

(17:53):
leaving residents to fend for themselves amid the lingering toxic fumes.
Long term exposure resulted in severe physical and neurological changes,
with survivors becoming known as col row sapiens. Due to
their altered state, these individuals now scavenge desperately for resources
and struggle to survive and their harsh, deteriorated environment. So

(18:17):
that is condemned this year, and we had a chance
to experience both of these attractions live and in person.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
This year, and we didn't even do VIP. We did
like regular well, we did fight, we.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
Did frightened bites.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
So I will continue to say, let's just run through
the whole experience and start to finish yere right, So
I still think that the fright and Bite experience, when
you go to the Alehouse and.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Get your tickets.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
Condemned and whatever the outdoor attraction is going to be
called in future years, is one of the best values
that you can get. Oh absolutely, and dinner yep. Because
so the tickets for both attractions are forty five dollars
and for an additional ten dollars to pick dinner off
of a haunted menu. Dare I say.

Speaker 6 (19:04):
It's very des or the quivering cases, the chicken creepy
It was something like that.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
Yeah, So Anyway, I would recommend that any Barrett's Haunted
Mansion experience starts with.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Abington Illhouse patio.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
Their porch overlooks the Haunted House and they have the
entire thing decked out or Halloween and it's so cool.
They's such a great job. Every single year they their
entire food menu and their drinks to Halloween themed Halloween,

(19:51):
as Andrew and I experienced this year. Yes, yes, yes, yes,
so Andrew and I. Amongst the many drinks that we
have on the patio before going through these attractions, that
was the d D this year, Thank you very much.
We decided to try the scorpion margarita. Andrew and I

(20:12):
both had one. So if you if you follow our
Instagram page, you might have already seen something like this.
But they will serve you a margarita where they actually
give you a dead scorpion in said margarita. And Andrew
and I both had one. Andrew had one first.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
I will I will write to give you the pictures
so you can post this.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
And so we both had one, and I will say
eating a scorpion probably not the best experience, definitely a
cool thing to do once and I enjoyed it for
the sake of the show and the sake of having
a good Halloween time. It did kind of taste like

(20:56):
dirt and garbage. It was not great. Tasted a little
salty and uh like a little bit like you were
eating some dust. So I guess with that being said,
I would recommend not eating scorpions if the situation allows
for it. But if you want to eat a scorpion,
you can go to at the Appington House before you

(21:18):
go to Baritonic Mansion and get a scorpion margarita and
they'll give you a scorpion in your margarita. The margaritas
are very strong. Uh, did a great job getting us
nice and lubed up for the hont attraction and feeling
a little bit loose, so we weren't super scared.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
I did have a shipyard.

Speaker 1 (21:34):
Yes, it was a sold out because we actually so.
I was gonna say this too, Kat, this was not
only the latest in the season that we've gone in
quite a long time.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
Yeah, we usually go early. It was very busy and the.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
Lines were very long for Thursday. Yes, and we went
on a Thursday for Bite and Fright, And you can
imagine if Saturday, we waited in in line a long
time for both attractions, which is totally fine.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
I was expecting that.

Speaker 1 (22:07):
But I would say, given the limited time left in
this season, if you want to experience everything in a
reasonable amount of time, you might want.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
To upgrade to their VIP or rip ticket.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
I believe they call it, which will get you to
the front of the line if time is of the
esf if time is of the essence, if you don't
have the time to wait in line. But being said,
I will say when you're they do a really good
job of keeping you entertained.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
I feel like this.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
Year they we always have and this year they kind
of stepped it back up. It was really good.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
I don't remember what it was like last year because.

Speaker 1 (22:43):
I go every year, but I think I had clips
of horror movies on there with trivia, and they had
people on stages like doing entertainment in between, like you know,
like certain times. It was really cool.

Speaker 3 (22:55):
I think that they usually when we we normally go at.

Speaker 4 (22:58):
The very beginning of the season because our October is
just jam packed every year and we want to make
sure that we always get to Barretts because it's one
of those things it's like a non negotiable. You're like,
I need to go to Barrett's during spooky season, and
we try to aim for Like I think last year
we went on opening weekend and we were like we were.

Speaker 1 (23:19):
Like, oh, you know they've been last year.

Speaker 3 (23:22):
Yeah, We're like they're.

Speaker 4 (23:23):
Probably still working out the kinks, trying to get you know,
their groove on and stuff. But you know what, we're
absolutely going. We love Barretts. Like why it doesn't matter
if it's opening week, if it's not the best or not.
But it was so funny because it was totally opposite
from like just the crowd and everything it was. It
was so crowded and I just haven't I haven't experienced

(23:45):
that in a long time because the year before I
didn't go yeah right, you.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
So faces and stuff, but I just haven't.

Speaker 4 (23:57):
My friend Jen came with us and she's like, oh,
I know that it was going to be a really
long line.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
It's like I know that it's gonna be, but I
just like completely.

Speaker 4 (24:06):
Forgot, Like I just even it is kind of it
didn't matter. But like you said, the lines, they have
little side entertainment and they have movies showing and they
have under around that was pretty cool. Cool, but they yeah,
they keep it good and they have great fried.

Speaker 1 (24:26):
Dough that you can get in line.

Speaker 4 (24:27):
Absolutely, So if you go to one house and there's
a long line in the next one and you want
to snack.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
Yeah, you did pop out a line in between Condemned
and the Mansion to get some fried dough and you
had plenty of time to be able to eat it.
Highly recofied though, both attractions here real quick. So when
let's talk about Condemned, the outdoor track, which I think

(24:57):
continues not my favorite attraction action that the mansion is
always so good, but it's close, very good.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
I feel like for me, it's a it's a warm up,
like you're warming up for something bigger, Like the mansion
always just felt like a bigger attraction than Demmed correct.
I mean, I guess we've seen it grow and evolve
over the years, so it just now it's more like
when it first started.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
Because Jen, my friend Jen was even saying this.

Speaker 4 (25:29):
I haven't been with her to Barretts in years, and
she was like, Oh, it's that amazing, right, And it's
like all chain length fences and there's people in it
and you're trying to find your way out?

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Isn't that how it goes?

Speaker 4 (25:40):
And I was like, well, you haven't been in quite
a while, because now it's actually like its.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
Own it used to be that it used to be.
Now it's completely different and it's its own thing, and
it looks great, it's awesome. It's I feel like the
actors in this attraction almost know that for most people,
they're they're the warm up for the main event. So
I feel like the actors in this the actors in

(26:05):
both attractions are phenomenal, but in this one in particular,
I feel like they're a little bit more aggressive and
they are right in your face. Like there's all kinds
of different scares that are out there. They have like
bungee jump scares, like all kinds of stuff. Really, we
walked right by one.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
Oh yeah, maybe they didn't get me.

Speaker 1 (26:22):
Yeah yeah. But this is designed to look like a
small town, so you're walking through different areas of this
town and there's like, you know, a school yard and
a playground, and it's like it's honestly incredible, and the
whole thing you start walking through their version of a
Blockbuster video, which is called Lackluster Video, which I love
because I'm a child of the nineties, so I love Blockbuster,

(26:45):
and yeah, it's it's just a great attraction to start
off with. It's a nice warm up for the main event, right. Yeah,
I thought it was great. I thought it was fantastic. Yes,
And obviously, you know it is outside, so if you're
going to be going through it, make sure you dress
appropriately because you might be in line for a long time.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
Dress warmly, and.

Speaker 1 (27:09):
Look at the weather.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
We were going to try and do an episode without
talking about the weather, but.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
Well here it comes very briefing.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
Make sure you look at the weather.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
So we finished Condemned and then we made our way
over to the line for the Haunted Mansion itself, which
again is in year thirty three, and the theme this
year is games, and the whole thing is based on games,
which is a really cool theme. And when I heard
they were going to do this, I was very excited.
I knew Kat would be very excited.

Speaker 4 (27:41):
Yes, but before you talk about the house, to talk
about what happened in between.

Speaker 1 (27:44):
The houses, I was going to Yeah, no, no, So
in line because we did wait in line were which
again to be expected when you're going the week before Halloween.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
It's crazy.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
Everyone want people there.

Speaker 4 (28:07):
Well, it was a week before Halloween, literally the week
before it, like day.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (28:15):
The only you know, busier times that we would be
that you could potentially go, it would have been last
weekend or on Halloween. I would say they probably have
a huge crowd on Halloween. I'd even say probably the
next day.

Speaker 1 (28:27):
So I've always wondered if their crowd on Halloween is
as busy as it is on nights. I think a
lot of people are doing trick or treating that type
of thing, so I don't think it's as busy. I
think I think probably Halloween night and the two following
nights are probably a little bit less busy.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
But I don't know. I've never been.

Speaker 3 (28:40):
But if you're like in high school and you're too
old to be trick or treating, what are you going
to be doing?

Speaker 1 (28:45):
Barrett's going to Barrett's. That's right, yep, that's up.

Speaker 3 (28:48):
And you can be frightened because if they have, they.

Speaker 1 (28:51):
Must have, so pretty much when you're in line, you
can obviously, like we said, Kat went out, got some
fried dough, came back in line, and then we were
standing there for a while and they had they had
a stage to the right where people were doing some
entertainment on there, and then they had one particular time
where all the actors lined up to the left, one

(29:14):
with each line, and essentially just there was a there
was a bunch of music and a huge countdown. They
ran through the lines just trying to scare people. It
was awesome. It was really cool to see and uh, yeah,
they do a really good job of entertaining you while
you're in line. Awesome. So then eventually we got into

(29:34):
the mansion.

Speaker 3 (29:34):
Wait ahead, when I bumped into our friends.

Speaker 1 (29:38):
Oh oh, okay, well, I don't know if we can
review all that.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
I don't want to reveal anybody's identity here.

Speaker 4 (29:43):
Okay, Well, he bumped into an actor that's a friend,
and it was really fun because I asked him to
take a picture and he was like, wait a.

Speaker 3 (29:51):
Minute, I know you guys. You're from the podcast. I mean,
he said in very low voice because he's in characters,
so you can't.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
Really very nice of him to recognize and say hello.

Speaker 3 (30:01):
I can't say his name. I can some carver, Carver,
okay whatever. So, yes, it was very awesome to see
him because we haven't.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
Seen him in a while and super nice guy.

Speaker 4 (30:18):
Great guy, took an awesome picture with him, and I
was very happy to see a familiar face.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Yeah. Absolutely, And I think that speaks to the fact
that everybody that I've met or worked with at bat
Parrett's since we've started doing since we've started doing this podcast,
has been nothing but supportive of us and very friendly
and appreciative of all of all the coverage we've given them.

(30:47):
So that's that's great. And I love this place. It
seems like they they love hearing from us, so that's great.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
It's fantastic.

Speaker 1 (30:56):
Shout out to Carver, thank you for the button.

Speaker 2 (30:59):
Carver, my friend.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Gave you a nice button. Whatever.

Speaker 4 (31:03):
Yes, an accident touched his shoulder. You can't touch the actors.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
Don't touch.

Speaker 3 (31:14):
On my shoulder. Be like, hey man, nice to see.

Speaker 2 (31:23):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (31:23):
I was like, yeah, I'm sorry, Like I was.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
I think he was feeling a little aggressive. I think
very clearly he could have if he was paying attention,
he would have known that we weren't. Really He's doing
he was doing his job.

Speaker 3 (31:35):
But I looked at him and I was like, I know,
and I literally looked at him and I was He
looked at me and He's.

Speaker 4 (31:40):
Like hey, and I was like, I know, I know,
don't touch the actor, all right, I'm sorry I touched him.

Speaker 3 (31:45):
Okay, you caught me, all right.

Speaker 2 (31:46):
Sorry, friend.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
So we're not welcome back to Barrett's your fault.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
Your fault anyway.

Speaker 1 (31:55):
So after we saw our friend Harmer, we finally made
our way into the mansion and wow, it was impressive.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
So excuse me. One of the funny things is.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
That you typically enter from different places each year, either
at the front or at the back, and I was
guessing we entered back and we just walked our way
through these essentially scenes of fucked up horror games.

Speaker 3 (32:22):
Not even horror games, regular games.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
Regular games that were themed to Barretts and themed two
horrific versions of these games. And I know a few
particular ones that stood out to me, same what ones
stood out to you, Kat? Without spoiling it too much
for everybody.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
My favorite out of the whole thing was Don't Wake Dad.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Don't Wake Daddy.

Speaker 3 (32:46):
That was my favorite.

Speaker 1 (32:47):
I in general.

Speaker 3 (32:48):
Jen mentioned this too.

Speaker 4 (32:50):
She was She texted me on her way home telling
me we got home safe and said that she as
she was driving home, was kind of processing, which I
kind of just same thing. You're processing all the things
that you saw and putting together which one is which,
and she's like.

Speaker 3 (33:07):
Oh my god, I just realized that that other one
was like mouse trap and.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
Room.

Speaker 3 (33:14):
She's like putting it together.

Speaker 4 (33:15):
I think the concept was awesome because it it seemed
I mean not saying that other years they weren't thought
put into it, but this seemed like it was more.
There was more thought put into this, carefully planned for
each room and what they would be, and then they

(33:36):
even I liked.

Speaker 3 (33:36):
The Twisters room too.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
Spoil.

Speaker 3 (33:38):
That's a spoiler, m.

Speaker 1 (33:43):
Obviously, because the Twisters Room was themed to more like
the Move, which of course you loved.

Speaker 3 (33:50):
What I liked to don't make daddy.

Speaker 1 (33:51):
I liked to have operation operation.

Speaker 4 (33:55):
I think you went outside for a minute as like.

Speaker 3 (33:58):
A breath of fresh, like a breather oh to me, like,
I don't know, I don't want to spoil spoil a
lot of stuff.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
That's fine, spoil it.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
A spoiler, but I like that where there.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
Was that we walked through, uh, because you were the
silber one walking from know.

Speaker 4 (34:26):
And you know what, I was just kind of like
taking everything and as and just looking like caught up
and oh, I don't even know what it was, but
it was was it battleship.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
There was a battleship room to that battles.

Speaker 3 (34:40):
Okay, so the battleship room. I really liked to.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
That.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
They have a lot.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
There was a lot of cool They have the typical
Barretts things where you start on a bottom floor, you
walk upstairs. There's moving floors, there are there's moving rooms.
There's all kinds of awesome sets, and like, I just
found myself to looking up around at all the sets
that were in there, and when they hopped out to
scare me, I was like, oh Hia, and I laughed

(35:07):
and it was just great. So they do such a
good job. It's really incredible and it's.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
So I was, I'm like back to my friend Jen.

Speaker 4 (35:14):
I was convincing her to go because the last time
that she went was when we did a blackout night
from Mike's birthday. Right.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
It was a darkness unleashed and it was forever going.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Ten years ago, I believe twenty fourteen.

Speaker 3 (35:25):
I literally said to her.

Speaker 4 (35:26):
I was like, Jen, please come go on the Hunted House,
like you got the night off, dance at home, like
it's totally you should you should come.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
She's like, I just don't know it was it going
to be so scary. And I was like, I know
that you were kind.

Speaker 4 (35:40):
Of scarred from the last one when the guy that
was holding your hand he thought it was me and
like pulled you back into the house. It was a
different you had to sign a waiver. It was a
totally different experience.

Speaker 1 (35:49):
Yes, definitely different than a Darkness Unleashed or a blackout
night for sure.

Speaker 3 (35:54):
Right, and you're like, fast forward ten years later.

Speaker 4 (35:55):
Now you're literally looking around at all of the efforts
that they do to put together haunted house and all
the props and all of the effects and all of
the things.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
And I was like, you'll honestly walk through and appreciate.

Speaker 1 (36:06):
It's called Devil's Night. By the way, I apologize it wasn't.
It was called Darkness Unleashed before. Now it's called Devil's Night.

Speaker 3 (36:16):
So I said to her, I was like, honestly, I
think you're gonna have a new set of eyes. You'll
be able to see things and appreciate like the amount
of work they put in, even though you might be
scared a little bit, which I was glad that we did.

Speaker 4 (36:27):
The condemned first, so that she already got a feel
for that, and then she was actually I think she
actually liked that. She liked walking through the hot house
and seeing all the stuff good because, like she said
to me after, she's like, I was putting together which
room was witch and this whatever, So she wasn't super scared,
and I think she did, you know, maybe even next
year she joined us again.

Speaker 1 (36:45):
If you're taking time to figure out which room is
which in terms of the game theming, you're not that scared.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
That's great.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
It's so cool.

Speaker 4 (36:52):
I really liked and I want to see more. Like
they've had different ones right now. They had like a
voodoo one and they have a cursed one.

Speaker 1 (37:01):
I think that Voodoo one was really cool.

Speaker 4 (37:05):
I liked that this was a very specific topic, where
all the other ones were kind of vague in a
sense where they can kind of they have an overlying theme.
But I think that this was cool because it was
almost relatable to the people that walked through it, and
you could do that and you can say, hey, this
is this game, this is this game. Oh cool, Like

(37:25):
you're not even just scared, You're like, wow, look at
what you did to this room. It looks great, Like
maybe that's just me because I walked through it sober
and I'm like, wow, you look awesome.

Speaker 1 (37:35):
To feel like Andrew was just making fun of me
the whole time because I was just looking around me.
I'm like, whoa, this is so cool and he's like, yeah,
you're a door.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
He's not here to defend himself.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
What Andrew, what were your favorite rooms and games? Honestly,
I think I just I can't say enough about that
Don't Wake Down, because.

Speaker 3 (37:58):
That one sticks with me. It was so and so
simple and just awesome.

Speaker 1 (38:02):
Well, I just remember we walked through it and there
was a guy in bed and this room you can
spoil a little bit, and so a person runs out
and they're like, don't wake them up, and then the
bed moves towards you when you're walking through it, and
it was so cool and I was like, ah it,
don't wake daddy. This is great. And I think even

(38:24):
just recently we've thought together about how weird.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
Of the game that is.

Speaker 1 (38:29):
It is so weird.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
And how weird of a concept for a.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
Game that is, Yeah, like, don't wake Daddy because Daddy's
hung over and up?

Speaker 2 (38:38):
What the fuck is the what? What the concept behind
Don't Wake Daddy.

Speaker 1 (38:41):
I don't understand.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
It's weird.

Speaker 1 (38:42):
I mean, it's strange, it's it's uh interesting, I would say,
But the fact that they actually took that game and
turned it into a room at this Haunted House, I
was absolutely fucking psyched to see. It was so great
and I was dying laughing. But there was some other
really good rooms too, I liked them all, but that
was the one that really stood out to me.

Speaker 2 (39:03):
Without spoiling a bunch of stuff for people. Again, there's
only a few nights left.

Speaker 1 (39:08):
To be spoiled for this season before they completely tear
it down and change it for next year.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
So can we spoil a little bit more though?

Speaker 4 (39:13):
And can I ask you which which one was the
room the Broken Half again?

Speaker 3 (39:18):
This year? It was the.

Speaker 1 (39:19):
Plane that was Twister? That was a Twister room.

Speaker 3 (39:21):
I believe it was thought.

Speaker 1 (39:23):
Correctly, Yeah, I was like, why do I So? Yeah,
they turned the airplane airplane room into that this year,
if I remember correctly. But again a little fuzzy because again,
you were the DV that night and I was like,
I remember most of it, but I was just like,
the rooms are a little fuzzy to me. At that point. Yeah,
but it was.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
It was awesome. We had the whole thing was awesome.

Speaker 4 (39:45):
I loved it and it was probably one of my
favorite houses I think so far. Really Yeah, all right,
I mean they just get better and better every year,
so it's it's not really.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
I don't know how they can go up from here.

Speaker 1 (39:59):
Well you have another floor, no doubt that they're going
to do something new and innovative next year. It's going
to really push their boundaries and make it the best
day they ever done.

Speaker 2 (40:09):
So I think.

Speaker 1 (40:10):
Barrett's to sum it Up is a great event that
anyone that's from New England, especially Massachusetts. If you're on
the cell shore of mass chufs you've never been to
Barrett's on it Management before, you need to go. Put
it on your list next Halloween or go this week
for the season, because there's three nights left as we
close in on Halloween for the twenty twenty four season. Yes,

(40:34):
but yeah, I love Barrett's. I'm so happy we got
to do a quick episode about it this year because
I thought we weren't going to be able to do it.
And this makes I think four in a row of
doing Barrett's stuff because we were coming up on five
calendar years for the show. Yeah, and I think this
is this is our fourth time doing Barretts. Yes, yeah, yeah,

(40:57):
big fans, big fans.

Speaker 4 (40:59):
Can we still squeeze into the Alehouse to go back
on the patio before they take down all the decorations?

Speaker 1 (41:03):
But we loved go you can go Saturday?

Speaker 3 (41:05):
All right?

Speaker 1 (41:06):
Yeah, all right, Kat, anything else you want to say
about Barrett's Haunted Man in twenty twenty four before we
sign off for this.

Speaker 4 (41:15):
Episode gone, and if you can't go, I'm sorry you
missed out.

Speaker 3 (41:21):
And Helloeen maybe Alloween.

Speaker 1 (41:26):
If you get the scorpion Margarita, please don't eat the scorpion.

Speaker 2 (41:29):
You can't.

Speaker 1 (41:30):
You can eat it, don't say it didn't warn you
get lots of their other lovely food first, preferably their
buffalo chicken dip.

Speaker 2 (41:37):
Which is the best thing.

Speaker 1 (41:38):
I want to say, the best bufflow chicken dip in
the world. No offense to you, Catherine, because you make
also bombo. This is this almost like a buffalo chicken soup.
It's delicious, great.

Speaker 3 (41:47):
Really, it's so good, yeah, so good.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
And it was a it was a different experience instead
of getting a pumpkin head this year, with a shot
of vanilla Hutka, getting a dogfish head pumpkin, which I
think was like eight percent, and getting a twenty four
ounce with a shot of in All vodka.

Speaker 2 (42:03):
Me and Andrew were like.

Speaker 3 (42:05):
I just remember that. Well, they asked me, like what
size I wanted?

Speaker 4 (42:10):
I remember last year getting the twenty the big pumpkin
with the shot, and I was like.

Speaker 3 (42:15):
It was it was too much. I was like, I
need to just give me a regular. I'm like a
butt light.

Speaker 4 (42:22):
I'll take a call, but I'm like, you know this
pumpkin pumpkin beer, I do?

Speaker 1 (42:26):
I know the regular or tall pumpkin beers are a
lot for sure. All right, Well, so oh be Halloween
as opposed to as not as opposed to. In addition
to one other episode that we recorded last week, which
was a fun things that we're scared of, So we

(42:47):
should have two episodes this week for you. This one
should be out first. Matt again unfortunately was unable to
join us at Barretts, so he was not able to
participate in this conversation. And Andrew is just a little.

Speaker 3 (42:59):
Bit He's a loser. Move on.

Speaker 1 (43:03):
You will hear Matt and Andrew on our next episode
that is coming out again later this week. But anyway,
thanks again for checking in with us here in America's
Hometown Horror podcast for the Halloween season. We certainly appreciate it.
And this was a really fun one because do you
remember the last time we actually did an episode just.

Speaker 3 (43:22):
Me and you, you and your wife?

Speaker 1 (43:24):
Yeah, me and my wife. I don't think a long
time ago, so it's been a while. It was a
lot of fun to do this tonight.

Speaker 2 (43:29):
Kat.

Speaker 1 (43:29):
Thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (43:31):
You're very welcome.

Speaker 1 (43:32):
You have fun.

Speaker 3 (43:33):
You know, it pleases me and grace you with my
presence solo sometimes, you know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (43:39):
Can you see that one more time for me?

Speaker 4 (43:44):
Well, I mean I'm not normally here sometimes in general,
So I mean, now it's just me.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
I'm like the star of the I feel like I'm
I'm kind of like.

Speaker 1 (43:52):
I'm blessed hashtag blessed hashtags.

Speaker 3 (43:56):
Yeah, you know, thanks for having me. What a what
a night, guys.

Speaker 1 (44:01):
Anyway, Happy Halloween. Thanks so much again for tuning into
another episode of America's Hometown Horror.

Speaker 2 (44:05):
My name is Mike. I've been joined by Kat.

twenty four when they open back up again in twenty
twenty five for their thirty Times you should.

Speaker 2 (44:31):

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
