Speaker 1 (01:40):
I can't really keep that up for the entire time
because it's too straining on my voice. It's incredible that
Bill Scarsguard did that for all of his life. But
we will get Yeah, he's very very heavy breather. We
will get to all of that. But anyway, I'm getting
ahead of myself. Here we are Mary Hometown Horror Podcast.

(03:21):
by Shawna. Now with that being said, uh yeah, it's
it feels like it's been absolutely forever since we've recorded,
and I am joined in studio here by the original
three amigos yet again for a second episode in a row.
Andrew Catherine, lady gentleman. Good evening, good evening.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
What's up? Haws?

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Everybody doing?

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Ooh, you know, just enjoying time. We've been marinating on
this episode.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
I don't I don't really know. Actually I was gonna say,
I was gonna say, I don't really know, but yeah,
we have. I think this is our third attempt to
this episode, not.

Speaker 5 (03:55):
Really attempts, but I would say, like.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Not in terms of the that we've been too drunk
to record, that we've had it. Which has happened in
our history, right.

Speaker 6 (04:08):
I mean people have had sicknesses, life's gotten in the way,
like it's just some.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Would say an old vampire plague might have ravished through
certain people that are on the podcast from time to time.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Can happen. I have a few wounds in my chest.

Speaker 5 (04:22):
You have wounds? What's your wounds?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Bite marks?

Speaker 1 (04:26):
He has blood sucked by pull your pull your shirt
down so I can see those bad boys. He's to me,
Oh yeah, those are those are nasty right there?

Speaker 2 (04:40):
You got they look infected. You know what Nicholas wholet treatment.
That's for sure.

Speaker 6 (04:45):
When I was in New Orleans, you get tattoos, vampire
bites on your on your that's funny.

Speaker 5 (04:51):
Yeah, it's pretty.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Cool because there's a there's maybe there's an active like
a gaggle of vampires down in New Orleans like that
believe themselves to be vampires. Yeah, we came across them
when we were down there at that time. The Ghost Honestly,
the Ghost tour in New Orleans was the best thing
I think I've ever done, Like one of the best
tours I've ever taken ever.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
It was great. It's very spooky and awesome history included
in there. It was awesome. It was a lot of
fun place.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
It certainly is definitely I think the the only city
that I've been to in America where it's like it's
not like anywhere else, Like you can't go anywhere else
in America and experience anything like you do in New Orleans.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
It's a hell of a place.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
It's a lot of fun, a lot of history, a
lot of cultures, a lot of stuff.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
Very deep. It's a deep, deep city.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
A lot of alcohols, a lot of great food.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
It's it's a phenomenal place to visit, so it's certainly
worth your time.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
I haven't been there as an adult.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
You got as an adult.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
There by myself. That would be a bad move.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
You're referencing, Like if you were to do what you
did last winter or this past winter, excuse me with.

Speaker 6 (06:00):
I know yourself.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
New Orleans for a week by yourself, you would you die?

Speaker 5 (06:06):
Yeah, you wouldn't come back.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Come back.

Speaker 6 (06:09):
But you know ted ted Maguire that made the dive book.
Whatever Teddy he dive far qualifier, Yes to qualifier. He
says he frequents Orleans like all the time. So I mean,
if you recordated with him, go with Teddy, that'd be
pretty sweet, to be honest.

Speaker 5 (06:27):
You bring all these cool places.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
If I'm not tight with Teddy, that I'd be going
to New Orleans.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
Really that'd be fun travel buddy. Not tight with him,
But I know who is. I've seen him. I was
regular when he worked back and Dylan's.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Oh, I haven't seen him in there in front.

Speaker 5 (06:45):
To work at New World. I know a couple of times.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Yeah, I feel like it's never been there when he's there. Really,
it's been a while. I feel like I haven't seen
Teddy at Dylan's in like a year.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
Maybe he's traveling. Maybe this is travel time.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
But well, if you go to Dylan's you can always
see ted.

Speaker 5 (07:02):
That's what I just said.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, I haven't seen him there forever I've been in
there like bless.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
But maybe he's traveling.

Speaker 6 (07:07):
I feel like he really does try to travel a lot,
which is good for him. I mean, I I can't
wait till I'm in a position at some point when
I get a little bit older to be able to
travel more and just experience things, because I feel like
when you're younger, you get that experience, then when you
get older, you get that experience, and it's just that
in between, that limbo land when you're just itching to
get the hell out of here, and like it's just

(07:30):
not feasible for x y z yele men of these
stupid reasons.

Speaker 5 (07:33):
Like that's where I feel like I'm at right now.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
I mean, I'm looking to travel asap as well as
when I'm older. So well, yes, I would.

Speaker 6 (07:40):
Like to, But I'm saying, like, as the grounded person here,
I logistically is it's hard to do.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
That the grounded Yeah, spiritual.

Speaker 6 (07:50):
I'm grounded ground No, like like mentally grounded, like realist.
I'm a realist.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
So, guys, since the last time we recorded, the Academy
Awards have come and gone and Anora won a bunch
of oscars.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
That was the big winner of the night.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
But I didn't see it either. One of you.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Didn't ask him about it because I didn't say anything
about it, which surprised. If it's good, he'll be like, awesome,
so Matt.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Matt said, which this was very surprising to me. And
this kind of leads into what we're going to talk
about tonight, that he's heard from a lot of people
that knows Fu sucked and he opted to rent Anora
instead of watching nos Faratu, which I thought was a
curious decision. And Noora is supposed to be awesome. I
will not pass judgment until I see it.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
It was also late at night. That movie is like
two hours like watching at night. That's a lot. And
for as much as that movie is good, we'll talk
about later. But it's tough. It's it would be a
tough watch. Like before bed, I would like, yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
You could, I could see potentially couples you've made.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
It would be like throwing on It is essentially and
we'll get to this again. An epic dramatic horror movie.
And it's very long and very drawn out, and it's
not like jump scary like Blumhouse movies.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
This is a different type of movie.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
So it's it's a commitment and when you pay, you're
rewarded for your commitment. I would say, yeah, but it'd
be like be like thrown on a Christopher Nolan movie
at like eleven thirty, like you're not You're gonna be
up till three, like like The Dark Knight. I mean, yeah, sure,
of course that's one where it's like all right.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Cool.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Anyway, So the Substance did take home an Academy Award,
which made the end of your lists for myself, Andrew
and Matt Cat you still have not seen it? Oh,
actually yeah we should. We should borrow that from you.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
And watch it. That's how we are, like on the
DVD Blue Right Blue Ray.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Okay, Yeah, I can't believe to me More did not
win Best Actress for that what is it, semi tractor trailer? Yeah,
Demi I think it's Demi Moore. Yeah, I don't know,
but it's weird that it was pronounced like that.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Demi Glass se I would think more, but it's DEMI.
It's not to me either way.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
Fantastic movie was nominated for Best Picture Best Director. Uh
didn't win those, unfortunately because Anora cleaned House. But this
is a movie that was absolutely deserving of both dominations.
A fantastic horror movie and just another yet another horror
movie that is won an Oscar, which puts it in
elite categories.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
I would say longest movies like.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Get Out and Jaws, get Out, get Out, YEP, the Exorcist,
body horror though many of those. I mean, has there
ever been a body horror movie nominated for Best Picture?

Speaker 2 (10:43):
I don't know. I don't think so. I just watched
Society last night that we should have been nominated. Have
you seen Society? No? No, check it out. We live
in a society.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
So the substance, by the way, they did win for
Best Makeup and Hairstyling, which I feel like is kind
of like a I don't know what's going on upstairs
in the house right now, but there's a lot of
stuff going on with either Otis. I just went up
there to go check it out.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
He's fine. This is like it sounds like this paranormal. Yes,
it sounds like something scratching in the floor.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
And you have you have a clear view of our
daughter on the yes, right.

Speaker 6 (11:18):
But no, I do think that Otis has a bone
that I think scratches.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Oh oh, I would just want to bone.

Speaker 6 (11:24):
So he's all risky, riled up and he's touching his bone.
That's absolutely the noise that we're hearing, right, kinlogical scratching.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
It, I know.

Speaker 5 (11:32):
Yeah. See, I'm I'm the persons on the ground. I'm grounded, grounded, yes,
ground dad.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Okay, there's something.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
So again, one more congratulations to the substance and uh,
hopefully this year wraps up as good as the year
twenty twenty four did for horror for all of our sakes.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
So, anyway, what else is new? Anybody watched anything good
they want to report on? It doesn't have to be
a big long thing. I kind of haven't, but I
have two books that I started reading that I want
to talk about real quick.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
You guess what, you guys still haven't seen any Yellow Jackets.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
I'm actually surprised that you beat us to watching Yellow Jackets.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
Well, and that brought it up and then I was like,
you hate TV. I hate TV, But I was like,
you know what, I was looking for something to watch.
I haven't watched really anything par outside of I watched
some Italian movie called Flowing, which was released since twenty
twenty two, but it was I think it was just
released on shutter.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Twenty twenty five. Okay.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
It's like some vapor coming up through like the like
the manhole covers or whatever, starts turning people into like
almost zombies.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Okay, I think it was interesting. It's all right.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
That sounds a lot like the Spooky World documentary that
was technically made like three years ago and probably won't
get released for a number of years.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Yeah, shout out to our former episodes. But anyway, yeah,
but it was no.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
It had like releases and like all these things, and
I think it was like released in other countries, but
it wasn't released here.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
I don't know. I looked up, but I thought it was.
I heard it was new, and I was like, twenty
twenty two. It's all right. I don't know. If it's
I wouldn't go.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Out of your way to watch it. It's fine special,
but the Yellowjackets it's easy.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
I'm actually very interested to hear your thoughts on this season.
Because I was very unimpressed with season two, and I
think you were as well, Right, I.

Speaker 6 (13:16):
Feel like I haven't watched these in so long now,
like I feel like I need to rewatch these to
really get to the next season.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
So we can watch a recap of season two.

Speaker 5 (13:24):
Yeah, I mean, I at least need a recap. I
feel so disconnected, like it's been a while.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Spoiler alert for season two of Yellow Jackets. If you
haven't finished yet, skip ahead.

Speaker 5 (13:32):
Did you watch the Yellow seasons?

Speaker 2 (13:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (13:34):
He did, Yeah, seasons. But the big, the big thing
that I remember at the end of season two was
that Nat died so in later life, so Juliet Lewis.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
Died, she was killed. See, I can't when they were
all on Lottie's.

Speaker 5 (13:50):
Yes, no, no, I remember, I remember that. I just
don't remember. Yeah, I need a recap. I'm so fine.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
That was the only major thing that happened that last season,
was they in my opinion, and you so you like
season three.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
I think it's much It's a much better story so far,
not really hitting the horror notes.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
See, I hate that.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
I hate yet because they flirted with it so hard
that that's so annoying.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
It's almost more like like a what's the word sci
fi drama?

Speaker 2 (14:21):
Paranormal drama? Well, no, like paranormal. Well it's like paranormal.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
Yeah, it's very it's very like like weird things going
on in the wood, Like that's it's there's definitely something
to that that it's getting more prevalent in season three,
like when they're like sounds and noises they hear.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
So I've heard the opposite. I've heard that it actually
moves further away from supernatural stuff season three. Do you
disagree with that?

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Not in.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Not in the wood, not like when they're there, like, no,
they're just that they hear like the sounds. Everyone here
is no I know when they're in present day back home,
like there's nothing supernatural going on.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
It's just it's a crime. But they're all what's coming up?

Speaker 1 (15:00):
But back in the woods, that's the that's the ship
I'm more interested in. Yeah, that's the ship that.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
I can heard that. Well, you get Coach Scott is
a lot in this episode. I don't want too much.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Okay, we're gonna start watching it again. Also, Severn season
two is out now, and I love the first season
and it feels like it was like five years ago,
so I haven't even and I think it's like the
whole season is available now and I haven't even watched
it yet. That show is awesome back when it was on,
but that's much more of a sci fi show, it's
not horror.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
And then I know.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Black Mirror is coming back very soon because there was
a trailer for that the other day. Paul Giamatti's in
the season. There's a sequel to a couple of different
episodes from prior season. So I'm about all. I'm out
as same as I can be on Black Mirror as always.
I love Black Mirror.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
So Black Black Mary only a matter of time before
someone did that, only a matter of time until Captain
that I think I started that? When if I someone someone.

Speaker 5 (15:59):
Else, I didn't come up with that. You started.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
When have I ever advocated for Iggy Azalea.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
I'll take, I'll take, I would have had my money
on cat for No.

Speaker 5 (16:15):
I did not start that.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Okay, Andrew, anything else you want to talk about before
I go?

Speaker 2 (16:22):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (16:23):
So I started reading two books, one actually, so I
have been actually reading this year because I know Andrew
is is a little bit uh, a little bit uh,
what's the word I want to say right now. He
likes to bust my balls about the fact that when
I listened to a book, it's certainly not reading it,
which I agree with.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
So I have been reading.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
I did actually put a lamp, a very bright lamp
on my nightstand. Yeah, because so I'll go up and
you know what, I've tried to instead of doing the
doom scrolling on TikTok or wherever else people scroll, I've
or you know, I've been trying to switch that out
with like watching some TV or reading my books. And

(17:07):
I've been doing reading a lot more recently. So the
most recent book that I started was is Stephen King's
most recent shorts, which is.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
Called You Like Marker. It was released last.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
Fall, so fall of twenty twenty four, and I'm about
halfway through it. So I think I'm about like five
or six stories through the twelve that.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Are in there. And it's good.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
It's not great yet, and Matt spoke very highly of this.
So I am inclined to give Matt's opinion a lot
of leeway because he loves Stephen King. He's the most
He's the biggest Stephen King guy that I know, and
he's he tells me when something is good or not good,
and he loved the short story collection, so I'm very

(17:53):
intrigued so far. But I just like, I'm having the
same problem that I've had with a lot of Stephen
King's novels and recent years, is that his writing is
so boomerish now, which like I get because he's a
boomer and he's writing as a boomer. And I feel
like all he likes to write about now is cops

(18:16):
with weird affects. There's the biggest story that I've read
so far, which was almost about two hundred pages, is
a story about something vaguely supernatural that happens, and then
the crime case that follows it, and the cop that
is the delete detective on the case investigating the victim

(18:38):
quote unquote has this weird affect like Holly Given does,
like yeah, like the outsider. So he loves writing about
that stuff. And I'm like, I don't want you to
turn into James Patterson or Harlan Coben or Dennis Lahane.
Why horror stories? I mean, maybe I maybe writ I

(18:59):
mean he's he's written a ba chillion things. I can't
even complain because he still writing stuff at that point, yea,
even before I got into his novels. My favorite things
of his are his first two short story collections, night
Shift and Skeleton Crew. They're scary. Everything in his horror,
like hardcore horror, and they're short, they're sweet, they're awesome, these.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Are long. I feel like it's just it reeks of not.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
That I blame him because he's almost eighty. All the
stories are just like, very reflective about life, and you
grow and you mature as an author, right, So I
get it. So you're not going to write about like,
you know, like washing machine monsters for your entire life.
And I'm not advocating for Stephen King to write about

(19:46):
a washing machine monster again in this new sh short
story collection. But I like that schlocky, crazy horror stuff.
I do, and I feel like he's written very little
of that in recent years, which is why I haven't
read as much of him. Like his most re novel
that I've absolutely loved was Revival. That book was fucking awesome.
Everybody should read it if you're Stephen King fan. But anyway,

(20:06):
I digress, So yeah, it's uh, you like it darker.
His latest short story collection is very good so far.
I know there is a sequel to Kujo in one
of the short stories later on, and I texted math
this the other day that I've actually never read Kujo.
So I did pick the book up the other day,
and I'm going to skip that story until I read Kujo,

(20:27):
and then I'm gonna go back and read it. So
I got a couple of other things on the biggest
Kuja Kujo. It looks pretty manageable. It's like, uh yeah, no,
like maybe like.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
Three hundred fifty.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Yeah, so it's pretty. It's pretty short, and I guess
that was one of the books that he wrote when
he was like all fucked up like an alcoholic and
drug addict. He was like, yeah, the ship should be pretty.
Matt said, it's pretty disturbing and graphic.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
But yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
So in addition to that, I've also been listening to
I talked about this author on the podcast before, Nick Cutter,
who is a Canadian author and his latest book called
The Queen.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
He's kind of a big body, hard guy, and this
book is just like that. I'm about halfway through it.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
It's okay so far, kind of like if you like
Nick Cutter stuff, if you've read The Troop or the
Deep or Little Heaven or anything like that, and even
other stuff you would probably like this one. I will
report back once I've actually finished the audio book, because
it hasn't really grabbed me yet. I'm about four hours
into it and I'm like, okay, get good please, which

(21:30):
thankfully I'm in my car a lot, so I can
listen to it for about four hours and give it
some rope. Anyway, that's what I got, Catherine, And the
thing you want to report on British Baking Show something else, Well, I.

Speaker 5 (21:43):
Only put on British Baking Show in the background.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
I know, I know, I'm yoking. I'm making fun.

Speaker 6 (21:49):
I watched that show Lillly Hammer that Andrew suggested it's awesome.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
I like one.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
Episode left and see well, I watched like a couple
of seasons.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Had my normal fate these shows. Sometimes these shows just
get like I feel like, after like one or two seasons,
it's just they're just pulling it like things.

Speaker 5 (22:06):
It gets it gets better, but yeah, I'll have to continue.
Yeah it's good, but.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
It's more like a winter show to watch though.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
Well, yeah, it takes place in the winter, like in Norway. Norway.

Speaker 6 (22:18):
Yeah, Lily Hammer, I think that's yeah, yeah, Lily Hammer.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
What else anything?

Speaker 5 (22:25):
I don't think I've.

Speaker 6 (22:26):
Really watched too many spooky things.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
Kind of a reset.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
I always take a reset this kind of year with
like because you watch so much horror stuff for the
majority of the year, Like when like after the New Year,
it's like, all right, I'm just gonna watch like because
there's also there's no really not that many new stuff.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
I still have to I still haven't seen the monkey,
really a monkey?

Speaker 5 (22:45):
What's the monkey.

Speaker 2 (22:48):
That we wanted? Okay, yeah, that's still in theaters. I
don't know.

Speaker 5 (22:51):
I was just thinking that.

Speaker 6 (22:52):
But no, I never got to see the fucking Wicked
it was in theaters. I really want to see that.

Speaker 5 (22:59):
Still haven't seen there. I haven't seen them one or
two either.

Speaker 6 (23:02):
I mean, but it's funny because like my whole movie genre,
like you said, like in the.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
Theaters, I could still see it monkey still in Honestly,
I've been trying, and now the only showings are like
towards the end of what Bridge naptime is, and I
just I'm not available for you.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
What's tomorrow? Tomorrow is Saturday, Yeah, it's at six o'clock.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
We'll we'll talk, we'll talk it's okay, I want to
see the movie so bad and we should do it.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
This is probably it's probably the last weekend. I mean
I can't. I mean it's been like, what a month.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
It's been out a month. Yeah, we've fucked up not
seeing it. So it's like it's one of those things.
It's like, okay, all right, whatever do it and yeah, okay, cool,
all right, we already talked about tonight's movie, all right,
so we're gonna get into tonight's topic.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Doujore, I feel like we haven't covered a movie in
a long time, very stuff for this, it's been a
long time. I think I should be good man. But anyway,
that's Boston.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
We'll be right back.

Speaker 1 (24:03):
After a little ninety second break from a word from
our sponsors, we'll talk to you about Nosferatu State tuned.

Speaker 7 (24:15):
Its official critics decision is his.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
Spooky World is spook Check.

Speaker 7 (24:19):
You'll enter the New black Hole or the New Horror
House of Wax this year. Don't miss the real Jason
Bobby Vikett or Alice Cooper on the twenty four hour
Spooky World Hound Live. Await eight three eight oh two hundred,
that's five aw eight eight three eight oh two hundred
Bookie World. It's just west of Boston. Haunts every night
from October first to November first. If you had the nerve,
you'd phoned five o eight eight three eight oh two

(24:40):
hundred America.

Speaker 4 (24:53):
The feace of evil is going to scare you too.
Damn Barns Holded Mansions Chillings didn't beat next to it.
To the Abington Airlos shall its Honded Mansion, Eat, drink
and be scary. Go to b h mansion dot com.

Speaker 1 (25:14):
Right, we're back and I but as I'm gonna try
to not do this the entire evening, I do have
the Oh we should bring that over for this and
great call.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
Hold on, don't forget the star coffe.

Speaker 5 (25:27):
Yeah, I'm popcorn sarco.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
Didn't eat the popcorn out of it. I did not
eat the popcorn out of it, but I do hold.

Speaker 5 (25:34):
I wouldn't you.

Speaker 2 (25:37):
That was definitely not.

Speaker 6 (25:39):
So you just got that like on the side. So
he has this. I was like for people who can't
say yes.

Speaker 1 (25:44):
So we're referring to at the time, we're talking about
Nosfatu tonight, not the the original one, not the remake,
not the Werner Herzog remake.

Speaker 2 (25:53):
With uh with uh what was his name? Max? Max
Shrek and.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
Then not the Shadow, the Shadow of the Vampire as well, Polk.
We're talking about the new one from twenty twenty four,
of course, And there was a popcorn bucket available to get.

Speaker 2 (26:08):
Really a bucket. As much as it's a it's a sphagus,
it is a hair.

Speaker 1 (26:14):
So I packed it up with a bunch of things
one time when I had to go somewhere to do that.
And uh, when you look at the inside of it,
there's actually the whole inside of rats, which is pretty funny.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
Yep.

Speaker 8 (26:26):
And it's actually is it aluminum? Definitely not, It's definitely aminum.
And it doesn't say it only says no sparatu on
the bottom. I think it's kind of bogus. I've said
no s faratu.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
On the side, and also says distributed by some place
in Calfulia.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
Yeah, exactly. I don't know if oh yeah, figure focused features, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (26:49):
In China, productstributed.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
Are you surprised by that? I surprised by at all.

Speaker 5 (26:54):
I mean, it has a texture to it, it's.

Speaker 1 (26:57):
It's pretty sweet, it's pretty it could be nice. Little
could be one of these things that on eBay, I
could sell for quite a bit of money.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
You never know, people.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
Say how many people want to fuck the Dune popcorn buckets?

Speaker 2 (27:13):
Right now? Those are all going to be ruined, runed,
but not used.

Speaker 1 (27:19):
Dune bucket in all seriousness, I think it does speak
to the level of seriousness that this release had that
there was a popcorn bucket for it, right, because they
don't do that for just you know, Joe blow fucking
stupid movie like this is a they.

Speaker 2 (27:33):
Did it for Dune and then did they do it
for Romulus.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
Uh, they did do something for Alien Romulus, and a
lot of them are exclusive to certain theaters. I think
the Alien Romulus one was not to Regal, which is
where Kingston is, which is the one that we usually
go to. So usually the popcorn buckets that we see
are at Regal Cinemas, which is the one in the
Kingston Mall.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
Is indeed Kingston Collection.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
But it's it's rare that you get a horror movie
like this, which is a very big to do, largely produced,
huge budget horror drama film with a huge, very well
respected ensemble cast of actors that are all just absolutely

(28:22):
doing phenomenal work. All of them like there's not a
week link in this movie, and the lead actors are
obviously great as well.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
But anyway, of course, I'm talking about nos Faratu from
the Year of Our Lord twenty twenty two last year,
which again made my list of the year the year
and twenty twenty four.

Speaker 1 (28:42):
Did I if I said twenty twenty two year is
twenty twenty one?

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Year?

Speaker 5 (28:48):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (28:48):
As Robert would say?

Speaker 1 (28:49):
Twenty twenty four made my list and Andrew's list at
the end of the year because we were the only
two that had seen at this point. Now Cat has
seen its I believe still has not. But nos Faratu
is a twenty twenty four American Gothic horror film written
and directed, of course by Robert Eggers from The Witch,

(29:11):
from the Lighthouse from the Northman, and he's a great director,
wanting to be a Labyrinth Reemak Labyrinth remake and a
Werewolf movie he's going to make. Also a guy that's
said in an interview that was recorded that it would
he would rather I think something like this that he
would rather jump out a window than record somebody on
a cell phone. So he's never going to make a

(29:32):
modern movie. Ever, it's all going to be all old
period pieces to which I say, hey, respect bro, do
you think he knows what he likes?

Speaker 2 (29:40):
He wants to do?

Speaker 1 (29:40):
It knows Faratu. By the way, it is a remake
of nos Faratu, a symphony of horror from nineteen twenty two,
itself an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula written in
eighteen ninety seven.

Speaker 2 (29:55):
Excuse me.

Speaker 1 (29:56):
This movie stars Bill Scarsgard as the titulary knows for
or Count Orlock, Nicholas Holt, Lily Rose dep Aaron Taylor Johnson,
Emma Coryn, Ralph innocon Simon.

Speaker 2 (30:07):
McBurney great role, and Willem Dafoe.

Speaker 1 (30:13):
Additionally, the film features about five thousand trained rats, which
Willem Dafoe was big on making sure they were credited
as actors, because that's a Willem Dafoe thing to do.
You can currently stream this movie right now on Peacock.
If you have a subscription, you can watch it full free,
or you can rent it for a few dollars. Has

(30:33):
an eighty four percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and
a seventy three percent audience score.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
That doesn't surprise you.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
The disparity is a little weird to me.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
No, that doesn't surprise me, surprises me clitically, I understood
like it should be where it is. The average moviegoer,
horror fan, I can understand them not liking this, finding
it boring. But sure they're so you know what, they're
just that's just scary. They don't they don't like these
types of there's no jump scares, like you said, there's
no excessive gore, if any. Really, I mean there's some,

(31:05):
there's some, but it's not like to the level of
like terrifiers.

Speaker 5 (31:09):
It's not like.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
It's more of them. It's much more of a drama.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
It's a film. This is a film. I would tell
this what a month?

Speaker 1 (31:16):
What months December? It came out on Christmas of last year,
so right around Andrew's birthday. Andrew and I saw it
on his birthday, right.

Speaker 5 (31:24):
So it's also off season for Halloween. You're in Christmas season.
You're not going to watch no spartu Well, I mean
I get a lot.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
Of people did.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
Yeah, I would say the people disagreed with you because
a lot of people went on the budget for this
was fifty million dollars and it made one hundred and
seventy nine point two.

Speaker 6 (31:42):
Because people are going to watch it solely because it's
called Nose Paratu. And like you, I'm saying it's it's
less like if they had released it in October versus December,
with they have made more money.

Speaker 5 (31:57):
Absolutely, I don't know about that. You don't know about that, really.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
I think I think it's well timed. Yeah, to put
that out during Christmas.

Speaker 3 (32:06):
I think it was a pretty smart sosion because you
don't get that many bangers come out right around Christmas
other than like Christmas movie.

Speaker 1 (32:12):
I would think, and this is just my assumption that
the average moviegoer in October is looking for something scary
in a traditional sense, right, So like your average moviegoer Joe, like, Hey,
I'm not a big horror fan, but I'll go to
the movies in October and go see something spooky to
get a few jump scares with my girlfriend or my
wife or whatever. Yeah, there's a new Blumhouse movie out about,

(32:35):
you know, animatronics at a chucky Cheese. I'll go see
that instead. Which there's nothing wrong with that person. I'm
not saying that this is like not for that type
of person.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
This is for people that like movies like actually like
movies like this is the type of horror movie that like,
like when Martin Scorsese comes.

Speaker 2 (32:52):
Out and says that it's like a brilliant movie, like, oh,
you know, it's a brilliant movie.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
So to say that this movie sucks is probably the
dumbest thing I've ever heard anybody.

Speaker 5 (33:00):
I don't think it sucks, and you are more.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
You can say that I don't enjoy this type of movie.
I found it boring, drawn out. That's fine, But to
say that this movie sucks, you don't know.

Speaker 2 (33:11):
What a good movie is.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
Real quick before you go, Catherine, because I am very
interested to hear your opinion on this as a woman,
because I know that this is a very female oriented
movie with a lot of feminist themes. Like there's no
secret about that. That's how it is. It's a feminist
telling of Dracula, right.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
I will say.

Speaker 1 (33:31):
This is the second Robert Egger's film to be nominated
for an Academy Award. The first one was for The Lighthouse,
which is nominated for Best Cinematography.

Speaker 2 (33:39):
Don't know how this was not nominated for Best Cinematography.

Speaker 1 (33:42):
The film was nominated for Best Production Design, Best Cinematography,
which I guess I just find it up Best Makeup
and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design, and it did not
win any of them. So it was nominated for one, two, three,
four Academy Awards. I would say all deserving, and Andrew
to piggyback on what we were just saying, the disparity

(34:07):
between the critics score and the audience score. I won't
get into it right now, but there was one like,
when we walked out of seeing it, we were talking
about one specific thing that we weren't sure that we
actually liked, and there were two other guys that were
walking out of the movies at the same time as us,
and they overheard us and they said, yeah, did you

(34:27):
find that weird too? And I was like, yes, I did.
I'm glad I'm not the only person to find that weird.
Has now grown on me after reading about it and
watching it a second time that I'm like, okay, that fits.
It's but at first it's very off putting. So I
can see why people that may only watch this movie
one time are like, yeah, it was okay, it was weird,

(34:48):
like you know.

Speaker 3 (34:50):
So here's my counter to that being weird. Have you
seen the original nose fraw too. That's the weirdest looking
thing I've ever seen in my life.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
Like this is far more reasonable to have any no
one would spend a minute near that thing, I mean,
or like creepy looking too, but he just covering up
most of his deformities and like he's got this.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
Head but like the other guy looks like a bat. Yeah,
like the original, which I love that design, which is.

Speaker 3 (35:17):
Cool, But it's just like I feel like they went
that avenue because they were trying to go so that
they were trying to differentiate it from Dracula so that
they could actually get the movie made.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Yeah you know what I mean, I am.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Not at all Like it's like more like the monster
in like the Voyage of the Demeter or whatever, which
I love, which is I love Live, which is a
good movie. But like because that is because a mustache whatever,
who the fuck cares? Well, you just spoil it for
everybody if they But of course, if anyone's listening to
it at this point, they've seen those fautu but.

Speaker 2 (35:51):
Obviously they know he has a mustache if I know, yes,
of course.

Speaker 1 (35:54):
But because as soon as the movie was released, this
was actually this was the thing the Angloria come holding
in my right hand the cover of the latest issue
of Fangoria, which has count Orlock on the cover.

Speaker 2 (36:06):
I think it looks like someone that would live in
that na. Yeah, it's very cool.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
It's very good, and also there's some great ads for
the monkey in it. If you flip it over to
the back, it's very cool. So I still really want
to see that movie. But yeah, the design of count Orlock,
I feel like, was a little bit controversial at the beginning,
but once Robert Eggers talked a little bit more about it,
people started to understand a little bit more why he
made that choice, and I personally went to his side.

(36:33):
I was like, Okay, yeah, I agree, that's cool. I
think it's I think it's cool design. But I can
understand if you were hoping for something that was a
modern update of like the original design the bat. If
you're gonna regular movie, not gonna work redo it, like,
don't just like like no one wants to see a remaking.

Speaker 2 (36:49):
There's just be the exact same fucking thing.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
Yeah, no, I agree with you there, if you're gonna
like put your stamp on it, And I feel like
Robert Eggers put his stamp and his yeah, you know has.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
Been on this is, this is.

Speaker 3 (37:02):
He's one of those directors where you can watch a
couple of scenes from a movie and go, I know
exactly who made this movie if you've seen his other
moe oh yeah, just because of the way that he
shoots his movies and they're so beautifully done.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Yeah, agreed.

Speaker 1 (37:15):
So those are the introductory facts about Nosfaratu. So let's
talk about nos Faratu.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
Kat.

Speaker 1 (37:20):
So you are the one that had not seen this
movie in theaters like Andrew and I did. You saw
it just about a week ago with me, and as
I mentioned, I'm particularly interested in your opinions on this movie.
So what do you think of nos Faratu? Feel free
to not don't, don't shy. If you didn't like it,
you can say it.

Speaker 6 (37:39):
I don't know whether or not I really liked it
or not. It was kind of like, Okay, I'm not
a huge vampire person.

Speaker 2 (37:48):
In general.

Speaker 6 (37:49):
I don't really like vampire movies. I think they're all
excuse me, they're very predictable. Yeah, I mean I I
don't like how predictable they are because I know what's
gonna happen.

Speaker 9 (38:02):
Ultimately, like you know what's it's it's it's hard to
kind of have a new, unique vampire movie that's I
feel like, or a spin on vampires.

Speaker 6 (38:15):
Which is why I think like what we do in
the Shadows is so fun because they take like this
comedic approach to vampires.

Speaker 5 (38:22):
First everyone else who's like, oh, vampires are so serious.

Speaker 6 (38:26):
Well, and then you get like what we do in
the Shadows and like, what what is that based off of?

Speaker 1 (38:31):
I forget it's the movie The Shadows, but they take
the piss out of everything vampire related, which I do
love that show for.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
That because I don't forget dractly loving it too.

Speaker 1 (38:41):
Oh yeah that's great, but yeah, vampires got really stale
for a long time.

Speaker 5 (38:46):
It's so stale.

Speaker 6 (38:47):
And what was oh the freaking no, no, no, the movie?

Speaker 5 (38:52):
What was it? Because there are are Renfield.

Speaker 6 (38:57):
Renfield loved Renfield because it was a different take on
a vampire thing. Like those things I like because they're
out of the box. I feel like the same You're You're.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
Three Days and Night's awesome. That's actually a scary vampire movie.
Let the right one in, but.

Speaker 5 (39:14):
No, it's like when you get It's third Day's Night
short very different. They are very different. But listen, I
feel like it's the same thing. You have to invite
the vampire. Like there's certain rules you follow with vampire movies. Yes, exactly,
but it really is.

Speaker 6 (39:36):
True, and like it's getting to the point where you're
just like, oh, great, another vampire movie, Like great, nos fra.

Speaker 5 (39:43):
To wonder what this movie is gonna be about. Like
I mean, it's just it's so predictable.

Speaker 6 (39:50):
You're like, okay, well it's I always here and I'm
going to watch him suck someone's blood cool like again, and.

Speaker 5 (40:02):
It's just stupid, probably just repetitive.

Speaker 6 (40:08):
And it's this So actually, when you said it was
Bill Scar's guard for whatever reason, I didn't know that
until you just said that, like not too long ago.

Speaker 2 (40:17):
I've now told you.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
I've now told you this three times.

Speaker 6 (40:20):
Yes, okay, Well it was interesting when I went on
the Google and looked like the next two pictures side
by side of him and him in character, and I
was like, oh wow, I don't even realize. He makes
I feel like a much better nose for at than
he did for Nise penny Wise.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
Look, you can see him in Pennywise, so you can see.

Speaker 5 (40:41):
Him in penny Wise. You can't see him in this.

Speaker 1 (40:43):
You can't see I thought he was. I thought he
was a good penny Wise. I understand why people might
not think so. I liked him as penny Wise.

Speaker 5 (40:51):
He did. He has very expressive facial features.

Speaker 1 (40:56):
That correct and hit wise. His eyes are weird. He's
a weird looking guy. But he's also like kind of
weirdly handsome too. He's like six five, he's skinny, like
he blue eyes finance, but he like I guess when
he was Oh yeah, he one most of Nicole Kidman

(41:17):
showing HBO.

Speaker 2 (41:18):
Yeah, he was with Alexander. He looks like he's chiseled
from the gods.

Speaker 1 (41:25):
He's like, yeah, he's then he's I understand.

Speaker 2 (41:31):
He's sexy and dune. He's really.

Speaker 1 (41:35):
I at least know enough about that. But yeah, the
scars Guards interesting group of family actors. But I mean Bill,
Bill scars Guard is like he's tall, he's a lanky,
he's weird, but like.

Speaker 5 (41:47):
He embraces it too.

Speaker 2 (41:48):
Though.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
Yeah, he's doing a lot of horror stuff. I love it,
and he I he is unrecognizable.

Speaker 6 (41:57):
Well, and that's why I said, like, before you said that,
I had no idea that was him because I think
also like that character is just like embodying and like
the whole like dark, dreary, like.

Speaker 5 (42:09):
You're not really supposed to even know what do you really?

Speaker 2 (42:13):
I never wants to do another role like that because
it was so dark. Oh yeah, so I did. I
did see that when I was reading about it. Yep.

Speaker 6 (42:20):
But what I'm yeah, I mean he was so dark,
but he was so like and he's so mysterious, like
he's so like it's you barely ever see him in
the light until the very end of the movie, so
I mean, you don't really see his face. But even then,
I was like, I don't know how I feel about
you know, I don't know how I feel about the mustache.

Speaker 5 (42:40):
Just I feel like you needed he see.

Speaker 2 (42:45):
I think it works.

Speaker 1 (42:45):
I think it works because it looks like they went
they went back to like v Led the Impaler, which
was the original inspiration for Dracula.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
And you know what, I think that that works.

Speaker 3 (42:54):
And look at everybody else that lives in that town
right there, all the gypsies and all them, they all
look like him. It would be weird if he just
looked he fits in with the That's true.

Speaker 6 (43:04):
That's true, that's true, you know, I mean I didn't
hate it. I guess it was unexpected.

Speaker 5 (43:09):
I didn't think.

Speaker 1 (43:10):
Scars Guard, by the way, was in full prosthetic makeup
from head to toe. So the scene that he's naked
in that's a prosthetic penis, that is actual dick. But
I thought the most interesting thing that I found out
about and I told you about this already, so you
know about this Bill, Scarsguard actually trained with an opera

(43:31):
coach to lower his voice an octave to make the
voice of count our orlock excuse me as deep as
pop and scars Guard I said that was the ad character.
He worked on the hardest thing six weeks before shooting,
not doing quote much else than just myself and on set,

(43:51):
I with these exercises, it sounds kind of like Mongolian
throat singing. It's insane. The preparation for his race so
intense that scars Guards stated that is the one role
where he's ever truly terrified himself, and after filming again
we talked about this, stated he would never play the
role again.

Speaker 2 (44:10):
So wild. I mean, method actors, they're gonna do method actor.

Speaker 3 (44:15):
Things, and in reality, that should have been the one
thing he worked in the most because he's in full prosthetic.

Speaker 2 (44:20):
He's barely really moving throughout the movie. It's really just
him talking when he's in the scenes. Yeah, for the
most part, sure, voice was fantastic.

Speaker 1 (44:29):
I thought so safe to say Kat liked the movie,
didn't love the movie.

Speaker 5 (44:34):
I liked it, But I mean I don't really love
vampire movies.

Speaker 3 (44:38):
That is that is the most Like I feel like,
going in in that movie, you know the story already,
so that part's irrelevant.

Speaker 1 (44:47):
If you know the story of Dracula, you know the
story of this movie.

Speaker 5 (44:50):
And that's what I don't like. Like, I actually have enjoyed.

Speaker 6 (44:54):
The best movies I've liked the past few years are
movies that I know nothing about going into and are
completely original, and I'm like, this is refreshing versus like
another sequel or another remake or another whatever, like and.

Speaker 5 (45:10):
They're a dime a dozen.

Speaker 6 (45:11):
Nowadays it's everything is remade, everything is this everything, and
it's like original stuff just really grabs me versus like
that Knock at the Cabin.

Speaker 5 (45:22):
That like, I mean certain things, like I mean, even.

Speaker 6 (45:28):
If it's not like an A plus movie, like you
appreciate uniqueness. You know, some creativity versus just remaking a
movie again and again and again, like Substance.

Speaker 5 (45:40):
But I feel like, if so, Substance is unique.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
So Heretic is now also on HBO Max.

Speaker 6 (45:47):
Okay, So I was just saying, I know, but I
just asked him that recently I was where he thought
Heretic that I had to because that was that was
the other one. I was like Substance and Heretic or
the ones that I was trying to watch that and
he said I had to pay for it.

Speaker 2 (46:01):
We watched them and again that movie definitely should have
been in my top ten Heretic I thought it was.
I don't think it was. I don't have your listening
on the outskirts.

Speaker 5 (46:11):
I had it written down as something that you thought.

Speaker 2 (46:13):
It wasn't in my top ten.

Speaker 3 (46:14):
It was on my you should watch, like on my
honorable mentions list, but it would definitely be in that.

Speaker 5 (46:20):
He said to me that I should watch it, that
I'd like it. That's why I was like.

Speaker 2 (46:23):
I don't think everybody very good.

Speaker 1 (46:25):
You want to hear a little bit more about Bill
Scarsguard preparing for this role. By the way, so count
orlock in the movie is supposed to be seven feet tall.
Bill scars Guard is six' five and to make him
even taller and more, imposing he had to wear heels on.

Speaker 2 (46:40):
Set oh what kind of?

Speaker 5 (46:42):
Hels i'm not sure it.

Speaker 1 (46:45):
Doesn't, say uh Eggers Robert hell Scars guard transformed for the. Role,
Quote i'll say That bill has so. Transformed i'm fearful
that he might not get the credit he deserves because
he's just he's not. There he felt like honoring who
had come before. Him it's all very, subtle BUT i

(47:06):
think the main thing is that he's even more a folk.
Vampire in my, opinion he looks like a Dead transylvanian,
nobleman and in that, way we've never actually seen what
an actual Dead transylvanian nobleman would look like and be
dressed like that quote right there makes me understand exactly
what he was going for with the look of Noes,
faratu AND i get. It and while it may not

(47:29):
have been my preference for the, DESIGN i think it's
a good choice for this particular.

Speaker 2 (47:33):
MOVIE i think it was a great. Choice.

Speaker 1 (47:36):
Okay Scars, guard by the, way was originally cast In
Nicholas holt's role as A Thomas. Hutter, however during the
film's long pre, Production egars decided to Recast scarsgard As.
Orlock in an interview With, Scarsguard egars stated that he
felt that the recasting was to make this sexual subtext
Between orlock and some of his victims even. More this

(47:59):
is a very Sexual.

Speaker 2 (48:01):
Empires there always been.

Speaker 3 (48:02):
Sexual every vampire movie session is, like there's let me
suck your neck and and it's, Like Jesus, christ this
really was.

Speaker 5 (48:10):
Sexual in a gross. Way having sex with a dad.

Speaker 2 (48:15):
Creature, yeah it's just.

Speaker 6 (48:18):
Well and THEN i mean When mike was talking about,
like you, know the whole woman, thing like, yeah and
then she's, Like i'm going to sacrifice myself and.

Speaker 2 (48:28):
Yeah she had given.

Speaker 6 (48:30):
Herself she was like she a long ago like saw
him and like now he's back and blah blah, blah and.

Speaker 5 (48:38):
Like NOW i have to give myself to him so
that you can.

Speaker 2 (48:41):
Live it was a, Demon so she gave her soul
to a. Demon she basically had.

Speaker 6 (48:44):
To she, was, oh, anyway like you, guys, regardless this is.

Speaker 1 (48:51):
Both, correct it's probably now it's good to talk About
Lily Rose, depp who played character in the entire. MOVIE
i would say she she is the main character the,
movie like for, sure like no doubt.

Speaker 2 (49:03):
About, it.

Speaker 1 (49:05):
Not gonna.

Speaker 2 (49:06):
Lie WHEN i saw.

Speaker 1 (49:07):
That she was cast in this, MOVIE i kind of,
thought It's Johnny depp's.

Speaker 5 (49:11):
Daughter oh, WAIT i think you told me that the.

Speaker 1 (49:15):
Daughter Of Johnny Johnny Depp Lily Rose, Depth and, YEAH
i thought it was just ANOTHER nepo baby type.

Speaker 2 (49:25):
Thing but she was absolutely. Phenomenal she was. GREAT i,
mean her dad's a FANTASTIC i think.

Speaker 5 (49:31):
That actually that kind of answers some questions about.

Speaker 1 (49:34):
Her, okay but to further on, That so the original two,
leads the The Nicholas holt And Lily Rose depth characters
in the movie were supposed to be portrayed By Harry
styles And Anya Taylor. Joy that's not Surprising andrew's, girl

(49:56):
WHICH i Know Robert eggers Loves Taylor.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
JOY i don't think that would have been a.

Speaker 1 (50:00):
Good Harry styles can't see it As Nicholas. Holt Nicholas
holt was way. Better, yeah he's a great. ACTOR i
actually really Like Nicholas. HOLT i feel like he always
plays like a bitchy, character and he plays like a
bitch in this but like he's very dead playing that
he was he.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
Was The redfield and the other one, Right.

Speaker 1 (50:20):
Yes he Was renfield in The Nicholas Cave Dracula redfield.

Speaker 2 (50:23):
Movie ye Watched.

Speaker 5 (50:24):
REDFIELD i thought it was.

Speaker 1 (50:26):
Great oh, yeah what's called like hearts hearts something something
hearts warm hearts or something like.

Speaker 2 (50:37):
That warm, body that's what it.

Speaker 1 (50:40):
Is you want to know Who Robert eggers originally considered
for Count orlock Before Will Scots. Guard, no Not daniel will, Something,
William Daniel Day, Lewis.

Speaker 2 (50:56):
AND i mean he would have just been in And
Mad's michelson from.

Speaker 1 (51:00):
He Played, Animal, yeah and.

Speaker 5 (51:06):
He would be.

Speaker 3 (51:09):
Either lewis would have been, phenomenal but it would have
been funny if he was just doing the voice from
like there will Be.

Speaker 2 (51:14):
Blood it's what he would put my. STRAW i drink your,
MILKSHAKE i drink your. Blood do you understand is the big?

Speaker 5 (51:30):
Question do you?

Speaker 2 (51:31):
Understand? Oh the?

Speaker 1 (51:34):
Best he's. Awesome he's a great. Actor he hasn't been
anything in a while, though WELL i think he retired from,
acting so that's why he. WASN'T i think the last
movie he was in Was The, thread something sad.

Speaker 2 (51:48):
Like he was like a designer, yeah clothing. Designer it.
Was it. Was it was A. Dane it was like
a two and a half hour.

Speaker 1 (51:54):
Movie, no not, That, no it was like your Typical
daniel Dan lewis.

Speaker 2 (51:59):
Where it's like in this movie any. Longer, yeah have
nothing happened.

Speaker 1 (52:02):
To a period piece strected By Paul Thomas Anderson, like,
yeah it's like one of those.

Speaker 2 (52:06):
Movies.

Speaker 1 (52:07):
Uh Lily Rose, depp by the, way worked with a
movement coach for the physicality and ferocity side Of Ellen.
Hutta she, said, QUOTE i also worked with a movement
coach who was incredibly. Helpful we had we kind of
mapped out all those movements and then tried to infuse
them with an emotion that felt. True they were more
than just physical, movements but also infused with a real

(52:27):
pain and a real kind of insight into what kind
of internal battle my character was going. Through.

Speaker 5 (52:34):
Cool i'm, Sorry.

Speaker 1 (52:38):
No it just sounds like, basically what WHAT i would
say is that all of these actors that were in
this movie undertook lots of additional outside, Training.

Speaker 3 (52:49):
Like this is a big, movie like you can do
it nuts rotch to, remake you can't funk. Around you
have to you can't just have to do it right
and if anyone was going to do it for this time, agreed.

Speaker 2 (53:01):
Where would you? Think? So have you Seen The? NORTHMAN
i haven't.

Speaker 1 (53:04):
Watched that's the Only Robert egress Movie i've not.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
Seen, yeah that's.

Speaker 3 (53:08):
Okay where would you put this one out of the?
Three because you can only rank the? Three this is
my number?

Speaker 2 (53:17):
TWO I I i.

Speaker 1 (53:19):
Am i'm saying The witch Knows faratu The, Lighthouse and
it pains me to say that BECAUSE i love The
lighthouse AND i know you as if anyone that goes
back and listens to Our lighthouse, episode me And andrew
just absolutely lose our.

Speaker 2 (53:36):
Mind which The witch? Is The witch is number.

Speaker 1 (53:39):
One it will always and forever be his number one
because it's so good and it was so.

Speaker 2 (53:43):
Unexpended, yeah he's phenomenal and talk about deep.

Speaker 1 (53:49):
Voice he he is one of the more underrated. CHARACTERS
i feel like he. Is he's underrated in this movie
because he is in it for so much like no no,
offense like no pun, intended Like Ralph innoson is in
it son a, lot like he's fucking in this.

Speaker 2 (54:09):
Movie and then.

Speaker 1 (54:09):
He's the main doctor because he's supposed to be what's
the doctor?

Speaker 2 (54:15):
In?

Speaker 1 (54:15):
Uh In, dracula it's not so my, god, Fuck i'll find,
it but It's, yeah was supposed to Be Van.

Speaker 2 (54:26):
Helsing, yeah he's supposed to Be Van.

Speaker 1 (54:27):
Helsing and then Har knock is supposed to Be. Renfield,
yeah who's phenomenal in this and Uh Ralph innoson is supposed.

Speaker 2 (54:37):
To Be yeah In, dracula who is?

Speaker 1 (54:39):
It That's i'll find the. Characters let's see Doctor. Seaward
that's who he's supposed to, Be Doctor. Seaward that's the,
big big, character and all The dracula. Stuff my, god it's.

Speaker 2 (54:58):
A modern, hospital? Sir why do you have him strapped?
Down then put? Jacket? Uh what?

Speaker 1 (55:14):
Else BUT i feel like watching this movie like a
lot of like the there's a lot of scenes in
this movie were like the like one particular shot like
you could frame and hang on a.

Speaker 3 (55:24):
Wall it's shot so beautiful when he's on his way
to the castle and that's the crossroad and the, yes
the the the, wagons the driverless wagon shows up and
bags him, up so.

Speaker 2 (55:36):
Beautiful, unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (55:38):
Unbelievable that's a really good, one the opening shot Of that's.
Great the first, time the first time you See. Orlock
also When hutter runs in and uh crow bars the
lid off the coffin and you see Or lock fully
for the first time.

Speaker 2 (55:54):
Along with his. Wolves that's a really good that's a
fucking wild. Scene, yeah that's a really good. One and
then that is the death The.

Speaker 3 (56:03):
Dread dread like The dread in that movie from the
time that the.

Speaker 1 (56:09):
Driverless wagon shows up to like him signing the papers
in the.

Speaker 2 (56:13):
Castle, like it's just, so it's, palpable.

Speaker 1 (56:19):
Palpable, yeah you can almost it's almost.

Speaker 3 (56:22):
Palpable isn't that a? Word, like it's. Palpable that is
a correct. Word you can't even know.

Speaker 5 (56:37):
THAT i was gonna say, palpable.

Speaker 2 (56:39):
Remember your colors and.

Speaker 5 (56:41):
Palpable feeling so intense as to seem almost. Tangible, yeah that's.
Correct what was the sense you were using?

Speaker 1 (56:51):
It?

Speaker 5 (56:52):
Again were?

Speaker 3 (56:52):
You the dread is almost palpable in those you like
you can steel the dread in?

Speaker 2 (57:01):
Yourself? Yeah watching did you get? THAT i did see
in theaters was a lot.

Speaker 3 (57:07):
Different, yeah on the big screen with the loudness of the.

Speaker 5 (57:12):
Sound, no, YEAH i, mean, HONESTLY i mean. Good last
MOVIE i saw in theaters. TWISTERS i don't. KNOW i
think that was the last TIME i saw.

Speaker 2 (57:22):
Sounds about, Right AND i mean it makes a, difference.

Speaker 6 (57:28):
It Makes it makes a big difference seeing it at
home versus seeing it in, theorist which is actually interesting
to see a different perspective because MAYBE i Wouldn't.

Speaker 3 (57:36):
Well here's the thing that's like my top ten is
it's hard to judge it because anytime you see a movie,
theaters it takes it has a it just it's it's
gonna have a better leave a bigger taste in your
mouth when you're.

Speaker 2 (57:49):
Finished that, like it just gives it.

Speaker 5 (57:51):
That extra, mph that big.

Speaker 2 (57:54):
Taste like Seeing rob. THEATER i hadn't seen that in,
theaters it probably wouldn't be as high as it.

Speaker 6 (57:59):
One, no absolutely, not BECAUSE i feel like that's.

Speaker 2 (58:03):
IF i had Seen heretic in, theaters it probably would
have been higher THAN i.

Speaker 6 (58:05):
Had but when you just said, THAT i was, like,
oh you, know when you say, this this movie in
theaters would have been much more immersive for, Me.

Speaker 2 (58:15):
Well it's so, dark it's so it's a huge.

Speaker 6 (58:19):
Difference it makes a big This this would have been
a big difference IF i saw this in, Theaters like.

Speaker 3 (58:26):
Feel like you're In he does such a good job
of putting you in that, time.

Speaker 6 (58:30):
And that's hard seeing that at home BECAUSE i feel
like That now that you say, That i'm, like you know.

Speaker 2 (58:35):
What dark dark you need a really dark distraction the
way you don't take so we we, yeah.

Speaker 6 (58:44):
We we we we we we we mean.

Speaker 5 (58:48):
We hi we. Wee how's it?

Speaker 1 (58:50):
GOING i KNOW i missed a little bit of a.
Conversation When andrew AND i saw in theaters it was very,
dark it was, awesome was, great and we had a
very good we wishing with no. Phones and then the
day That tat AND i watched, it we watched it
in our living room While bridget was, napping after we
had just picked up our, fish which we just got
about two weeks, Ago, killy our little bit of, fish

(59:13):
and we were kind of paying attention to the, fish
and the light was on and we were trying to
pay attention to the, movie AND i had to run
back out to get something else with the fish and
kept watching it AND i knew everything that went, on
BUT i was just, LIKE i hope she's paying attention right,
now because it's like it's it's, like this is not
the type of movie that you should be on your phone.

Speaker 2 (59:29):
For it's like.

Speaker 10 (59:29):
Very you need, to you need, to you need to
be as immersed in the movie as the actors, were
exactly to put yourself there so that you can FEEL
i was just telling, her like the dread in that
scene from when he's in the castle and he's the,
works that is the most like just dreadful.

Speaker 3 (59:45):
Scene like it's so much it's so well done compared
to the other all the Other dracula. MOVIES i feel,
like like when they show up at the, castle it's
so much more.

Speaker 2 (59:55):
Haunting AND i made fun of the fever. Dream REALLY
i made fun.

Speaker 1 (59:58):
Of The nosfaratu voice at a couple of times during this.
Podcast but like when he's talking To hudder and he's like.

Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
He's like the New Hugh.

Speaker 1 (01:00:08):
Grant i'm, sorry BUT i don't feel well AND i
must get back on the road for, tonight and he's,
like you we.

Speaker 10 (01:00:15):
Stay it would be considered as out front up, Whatever
like he just like loses it, absolutely very very, intense very.

Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
Scary it's like one of those things like could he
actually have left there or was he Under orlock's spell
at that, point because like people also, say it's more
uncomfortable to leave than this is to just be nice
and be like, Okay i'll, say like he should have

(01:00:45):
just fucking like, no fuck, you, Dude i'm out.

Speaker 3 (01:00:47):
By but also it's a lot, different, like, OH i
had to ride this horse in the woods night also.

Speaker 11 (01:00:52):
True, yeah and in the freezing cold wearing like it's
getting my car by do you imagine like wearing a,
blanket like riding on a horse through the woods with
like a foot of snow on the ground Like nest in.

Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
The Carpathian, mountains no pass like in The, castle.

Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
It's, Insane like the level of just what WAS i gonna?

Speaker 3 (01:01:15):
Say the the fever dreams that they have throughout the
movie are so.

Speaker 2 (01:01:20):
Intense, yeah like it's just and then just when they
wake up and.

Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
They have no idea what the fun just, happened and it's,
like oh my, God like it is shot so well,
done great, dialogue, like, yeah predictable story, whatever It's that's
what makes it so good to.

Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
Me is that you know the. Story you, KNOW i
was just even. Starting it's still.

Speaker 5 (01:01:38):
See what you find comfort in?

Speaker 3 (01:01:40):
That, WELL i think it's knowing, like, hey this is
a different adaptation of the same exact. Story interesting to
see because it's been a while since they've done, like
when was the last time you've had like an actual
adaptation of Like, dracula like Bram stokers.

Speaker 1 (01:01:56):
By Francis probably, yeah or you, know you have you,
have you Have dracula stories all the, time but a
faithful dramatic adaptation Of.

Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
Dracula this is probably the MOST i think it was.
DUE i think it was due for, That but.

Speaker 6 (01:02:09):
Also Like i'm, sorry, boring everyone's everyone's redoing everything all the, time.

Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
And you have to, think though we are now if
you really look at like we're at the one hundred
year mark for, movies essentially to remake a movie that
came out one hundred years, ago it's not really a remake, really.

Speaker 2 (01:02:27):
It's it's like a new. Movie it's been a hundred years.

Speaker 3 (01:02:30):
Ago and to like The Werner horzog one, WHATEVER i
find that movie dreadfully.

Speaker 2 (01:02:35):
Boring AND i really could care less for that. One
have you seen that? One, No, No i've the. Original
it's fucking. Fine, whatever.

Speaker 3 (01:02:43):
It's a little, much it's a little it's IT'S i
find it dreadfully, boring which someone could say that this
is boring but just not my cup of. TEA i
think this is a much better adaptation than the.

Speaker 1 (01:02:59):
One of you something really? Funny, Sure, no do you
really want.

Speaker 5 (01:03:02):
To HEAR i really want to hear something.

Speaker 1 (01:03:05):
Funny, andrew do you want to hear something?

Speaker 2 (01:03:07):
Funny? OH i want to hear something. Funny, okay fun
let's see we go down to the. Beach here's some.

Speaker 1 (01:03:15):
Balls maybe the funniest thing that Director Robert eggers has ever.
Said he Credits SpongeBob SquarePants for introducing the character Of
Count orlock Slash Nose faratu to younger, generations because And
i've seen this, firsthand can confirm a fictionalized version of

(01:03:35):
Nos feratu appears in eighteen episodes Of SpongeBob. SquarePants, REALLY
i haven't watched Enough. SpongeBob he's always like like in stop,
motion always like he never is in the same animation As.
SpongeBob but he comes into like The krusty krab and.

Speaker 2 (01:03:55):
Gets like a. Burger they're, like, no.

Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
Sperratu it's pretty fucking, FUNNY i gotta, say but it.
Is it is pretty awesome that there you're gonna.

Speaker 5 (01:04:04):
Be A SpongeBob person, now like.

Speaker 2 (01:04:06):
ME i MEAN i.

Speaker 3 (01:04:07):
Haven't i've got the episode Of SPONGE i ever.

Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
WATCHED i found.

Speaker 3 (01:04:12):
Hilarious it's gotten like really weird, Though like the animation
has gotten like.

Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
Weird it's almost.

Speaker 1 (01:04:17):
Getting Rocks Rand, stumpy rocos mode life type.

Speaker 2 (01:04:21):
Animals they kind.

Speaker 5 (01:04:21):
Of gear it towards different.

Speaker 1 (01:04:23):
Demographics now it's not you mean towards the millennials that
grew up with it as opposed to smoke.

Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
Smoking the.

Speaker 6 (01:04:32):
Chronic the early episodes, Were, YES i like the pizza delivery,
one that's my.

Speaker 2 (01:04:37):
Favorite we don't even get.

Speaker 1 (01:04:38):
Into how about that Tiny SpongeBob SquarePants of this movie
THAT i gotta, say pretty, good pretty.

Speaker 2 (01:04:43):
Good all the, snow by the, way computer. Generated that's
just you don't have to tell me all this.

Speaker 5 (01:04:48):
Stuff, yeah keep, Going, okay what else.

Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
Do you?

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
