In this week's episode, Abby regales the crew with the mystifying tale of the ghost blimp.
Amid WWII, a fleet of blimps would be assigned the mission of patrolling the West Coast of California for Japanese submarines. These missions were largely uneventful until August 16th, 1942 when two experienced pilots would set out on a routine patrolling mission and never be seen again. The blimp, however, was a different story.
Tune in to hear all the details on this mind-bending unsolved mystery!

(01:57):
It's a car dealership, it's notand there's a salesman and they're pushy.
And but we got a Rav HybridI know, Oh my gosh,
I'm so jelly, and she's beautiful. We named her Rondo, the Rav
Rondo, the Rav that was BigRonda. Yeah, it's Big Rondo.
When I'm feeling spicy, spicy,I love that Ronda. That's so perfect.

(02:20):
I love it. Yeah. Sothat's our baby mobile because I have
a two door car which was notgonna work. Andrew sa Sasha fierce and
she's been with me for over adecade. Yeah, I still have her.
We didn't trade her in because it'snice to have an extra car.
But um you know, she herwindows are and locks are not automatic.

(02:43):
She's the oldest car around now,yeah she's not. I mean she's in
two thousand and seven. There's carsthat are much older than her that have
We were still in high school whenshe was born. But you know,
she still drives had to replace someof her stuff. But like, if
you try and unroll the window, the knob comes off and you'll bust your

(03:05):
knuckles. All kinds of fun stuffwith her. Some of the speakers don't
work. She's got a lot dooras heavy as Yeah, that door you
try and get you at the door, it'll crush you if you're not looking.
Um still have her. We hadto trade in Michael's car, his
um, his Tammy, his greenKia. She was a tipping hazard,
so not baby friendly. But yeah, we have a we have an adult

(03:31):
car. It's like it's like ahuge like kind of life. It's a
life event choice for sure. Yeah, I've never had such a nice car.
Like, I don't even know whatto do. You've been holding out
for getting a new car all ofthese decades. I've been through few already,
And like same with Jess, Likewe were like when are you gonna
come to get a new car?I'm like, if it ain't broke,

(03:53):
don't fix it. As I bandagedmy knuckles from the also that the window.
But yeah, it took me.I mean I didn't get a new
car all through my twenties. Ittook me into my Oh my god,
you could say that. Oh mygod. Oh so uh feeling very adult.

(04:15):
There's so many buttons. I mean, I'm such a basic, like
I don't know what most of thestuff does. Michael is better at it.
He's like, reads the manual beforehe goes to sleep. Oh my
gosh, you bless your heart, love you so much. Yeah. Um,
so that was an experience, andnow we have her and Debt so
cool. Love love alone, payment, love a payment, love, adding

(04:39):
bills, gotta love bills. Um, but yeah, it's good, it's
good. It's good, good, awesome, great love it. Did you
have anything? Mmm, I don'tknow. I just don't feel good.
Yeah, that's fair of what I'mdealing with. But um, we do
have a tiny correction that we werecalled out on. Oh my gosh,

(05:00):
very true. We must address thishead on in the front of the show.
It's very important. Yeah. Um, longtime listener, a fan of
the show, a very best friend. We always talk about her, Jesse.
Jesse. Shawn slipped up and saidthat I was her best friend,
although saying one of her best friends. So right, and that's a mistake

(05:21):
and I'm apologized, and clearly Jesseis also one of my best friends.
Yeah, we were called out,so we do apologize. I was set
straight and I was like, you'reright, I'm so sorry. She's on
her apology to her, starting withyou, Jesse. Jesse's wrath is my
favorite. The really hung out andI was just like, I love like

(05:43):
kind of like poking at her justbecause like to see her face, just
like I just love her attitude.Yeah, your little sass cracks me up.
She it's fun to poke it.And her baby's first birthday is coming
up, so that's wild. Ohmy gosh is coming up. We're doing
that. That'll be like such anevent for us friends to like go to.
It's like our first friend's baby birthday. I know it's gonna get cake

(06:08):
all up in her face. Wehad to be social with our children.
Weird your children, well mine, since I just still cook in. Yeah,
he's He's like, I don't wantto talk to you guys. I'm
not ready yet for a few moremonths. Been crazy. He already knows
like this is what I'm coming outinto. I think I'll stay inside.

(06:28):
Oh yeah, what am I atnineteen weeks now? Nice? Yeah?
Wild, so wild feeling it.Let me tell you, I guess I
have a quick, little anxious sincemine was a little lame. But so
me and Chad are trying to live. I think we have like moments of
just like, oh my gosh,we're parents. Everything's hard. Let's just

(06:50):
like go out or something like that. We've been having moments where we had
to go see a movie or goto like the Arcade, which has been
really fun. Yeah, I'm happyfor you guys. Get cavin you ever.
Gotta get out right right while it'slike still kind of nice out,
I guess. But we got spontaneousconcert tickets, which I shouldn't have done
that we did, and it's forour favorite band, The Killers, and

(07:12):
they're like two hours away, sowe have to drive up there because it's
Portland and then drive back. We'renot staying. It's kind of one of
my conditions, but I might regretit. Yeah, having back late at
night. I don't know if mythirty one year old body can handle it.
Oh my god, that's a lot, it is. And Ryland's going
to be staying the night at Grammysounds for the first time like overnight and

(07:34):
I'm like, oh, I didn'tthink about this, and I'm not like
emotionally ready to think about that.Yeah, that's a big deal. It's
literally happening tomorrow. So oh tomorrow, Wow, well good luck. I'm
sure she'll be fine. Oh,she's gonna be fine. She's the most
perfect, easy baby. She sleepsthrough the night. I'm just having like
a moment attachment issues. Sure, that's understandable. Yeah, so that's an

(07:59):
interesting feeling growing up as growing upas a mom, but like learning to
be a my mom, I'm justlike, oh, I can't. Like
decisions are harder to make, likelike just going out and figuring out what
who's going to watch her? Orlike just like now I have to think
about her and being away from herjust like as hard as leg sticks for
sure. Yeah. We have concerttickets, so I have a feeling we're

(08:22):
not gonna Oh yeah, that's comingup too. I was an idiot,
Well I was before you were apregnant. Yeah, I bought them pre
pregnancy. And I looked at thetickets again and it's like on a Tuesday
night and we have to work thenext day, and I was like,
I don't know about that. I'mso tired all the time. Yeah,
you're at that point where you're justlike you can barely. You can just

(08:43):
do work and do whatever you canat home and then you're out. Yeah,
And I was like, I loveFather John Misty so much. I'll
be so sad. But also Ijust don't know. Yeah, we might
still attempt to try to go sinceit's in town. I don't know.
Yeah, it's a it's a busy. There's too many things happening in this
like one to two weeks time spanwhere I'm like, actually anxious to do

(09:05):
everything because I'm not used to doyeah, full plate. Yeah, I
don't know anyone else that likes FatherJohn Missy. I'm like, maybe it
should just give my tickets to somebody. I don't even know who that would
be. I might know somebody whomight have not gotten tickets, who wanted
to but maybe have not. ButI can ask. Okay, we'll talk
after. Okay, maybe maybe Ican make someone's day. Yeah, I'll

(09:26):
have to ask. I don't thinkshe okay, we'll do yeah, Okay,
Michael's rooting for me. Don't haveto go. I think he doesn't
want to. Yeah, our boysare like that in the middle of the
week, rather not do anything. He's like, yeah, you're so tired.
You're so tired, baby, you'regrowing like such a baby. Yeah,

(09:46):
so we'll safe adulting. It's hard. M hm, well should we
begin, Let's do it? Okay, episode one o one? When oh,
that's why you understand why Michael saidone on one earlier and then you're
like one on one, I'm like, I don't get this happy to be

(10:07):
here. I'm just gonna nod andsmile. I'm involved, so dumb.
Okay, one on one, baby, we're into the triple digits. Maybe
there's a Dalmatian joke in there,but I can't know. Blame forgot about
all those puppies. Okay, Sotoday I've prepared for you a story full

(10:31):
of mystery. I love a mystery, right. It's a tale that will
leave you with more questions than answers, but hopefully a story that you will
find as interesting as I did.Today, we will be discussing a story
infamously referred to as the Ghost Blimp. The ghost blimp like an actual blomp.

(10:54):
Yeah, what we're bringing it backto blimps? I like talking about
I know, who could forget theHindenburg? Yeah? So thankful or I
don't think this story is going tobe quite so devastating as the Hindenburg.
But it's gonna be a journey, and I think we're gonna find it very
intriguing. A cohost blimp, Okay, I'm so confused. Go yeah,

(11:16):
Okay. So honestly, I thinkthis is one of my all time favorite
mysteries I've covered. Yeah. Ijust had such a good time researching the
story. It's so weird. Goodness, So you haven't heard of this one?
No? Okay, good that's morefun for all of us. You're
welcome. So where is my favoritesource to find a good mystery? A
book? Well close, the iconicshow Unsolved Mystery. Oh. I first

(11:43):
learned of this tale while watching thatshow, and I thought it would be
perfect for our show. I alsogot a lot of really good info from
an article on history net dot com. And I'll link all the sources in
the show notes and at the endof the episode, like I always do.
Okay, So this is another WorldWar two story because I don't know
why. I just keep coming backto World War Two. Hey, so

(12:07):
many people love talking about and learningabout World War Two stuff. Just a
lot of stuff happened. Yeah, last stuff happened Okay, So the year
is nineteen forty two and World Wartwo is in full swing, with the
United States firmly involved in the fighting. The attack on Pearl Harbor had occurred
just the year before, so ofcourse the US is also now fighting the

(12:31):
Japanese along with z Germans. Aswe all know, the attack on Pearl
Harbor was quite shocking and devastating toAmerica, and the fear and paranoia of
a mainland invasion was like way inthe forefront of many people's minds. Sure,
yeah, that wouldn't that be wildif like America got invaded, Like

(12:54):
it's just such a something that hasn'treally happened to us, which is weird
to think about kind of in termsof totally because as that's actually terrifying,
like it coming to hear our home, you know what I mean, Like
it's it's so distant to us.Besides, like the British and like other
i mean battles, but not likea modern war coming here. It's just
wild totally. I Mean we alwayssay that the world sucks now, and

(13:16):
yes it does. Sure, yeah, sure, of course of course it
does. But like can you imagineliving at during that time, like it
would literally feel like the worst oftimes because it was the worst of times.
Yeah, like like evil war youhave everywhere too, like massive powers
that could stack you, Like yeah, I can't terrible, yeah, especially

(13:37):
living on the West Coast. Welive on basically the West Coast, So
I mean why was the West Coastbad? Because I mean that's where you
can get attacked as on your coastships and stuff, right, and the
West Coast is closest to Japan,so I mean Pearl Harbor. Hello,
we're really close to vat game.Yeah, so scary. It was really
scary time for people living in thatarea. So it wasn't long after Pearl

(14:03):
Harbor that Japanese submarines began patrolling theWest Coast. Submarines are scary, yeah,
and they were legit off of California'scoast. Like I was reading about
it, I was like I didn't. I mean, they don't talk about
it a ton, but there wasthere was stuff happening pretty close to home,
Like, yeah, creepy. Sothey would patrol the West Coast in

(14:26):
order to hamper war efforts by doingas much damage to shipping vessels as they
could, quickly sinking half sorry halfa dozen shipping vessels off of our coast
wild. The fears on the Westcoast would only intensify in February after a
Japanese submarine attack on the Elwood OilRefinery, which was located about eighty miles

(14:48):
northwest of La near Santa Barbara inCalifornia. Another Japanese I don't know if
you know about this one submarine attackwould occur at Fort Stevens in good Old,
Oregon in June of nineteen forty two. They attacked one of our forts
on land. I think they cameup the Columbia River. You is that

(15:11):
the whole submarine was in a river. Yeah, they're just like, hey,
you know, it's like it's likea it's just like a huge man
made shark type thing. It's justbig and metal and just like slowly moving
and sneaking up on you in thedark water. Dope, come u up
out of the water like you.And it's like all happened at night.
You know, you just think theocean's not a river. I don't know
why that disturbs me so much more. I know because it connects, so

(15:33):
you go way in. Nobody washurt, luckily, and there was very
little damage, but people were stillfairly you know, freaked out. Yeah.
Sadly though, these attacks would influencethe shameful decision of interning Japanese citizens
in the US. Just not agood look, America. That was not
cool. Not cool. You reallyhaven't been chill, we have not.

(15:56):
I remember learning about the Japanese andtournament camps and I was like, wait,
what we did that here? That'sso bad. It's really bad.
That's really bad. Yeah, it'sreally bad. The heightened state of fear
of a Japanese invasion on the WestCoast would also lead to the Navy's decision
to assemble a fleet of blimps, some of which were supplied by the Goodyear

(16:19):
Company. Of course, aren't theythe only ones who make plays? They're
like it. I think they likethey're blimps. These non rigid helium lifted
crafts were designed or sorry, designatedat l Class and operated out of Lakehurst,
New Jersey, which is where theHindenburg went down, and Moffett Field

(16:41):
in California. Isn't it sorry?Wait? Go for whatever the good Year
logo? Have we talked about thisbefore? I think I'm the only person
in the world who thinks this.Okay, maybe isn't the logo like a
what is the logo like a shoewith wings or something? Michael says,
yes, Okay, I always lookedat it as like Johnny Bravo's profile.

(17:07):
What do you remember Johnny Bravo withthe like big triangle hairy, like that's
who I see. Okay, yeah, I have to look at the logo.
I've you might be the only personin the world that thinks like well,
at least I said in the beginningthat I'm fully aware that I could
be the only Johnny Bravo and peopleare like, who the is Johnny Bravo?

(17:29):
Do you have that pulled up?Michael, the Good Year can look
at it? Oh, I kindof see it. It's kind of like
the Disney D thing where I alwayssee a backwards G instead of a D,
Like the wing on the shoe islike his hair. Yes, okay,
I could see that. Thank you. So you're like thinking Johnny Bravo
it somehow involved. No, Imean that's just what I see first.

(17:51):
Okay, Well, now I'm notever gonna not see that. You're everyone
look for Johnny Bravo on the GoodYe logo like Oh there he is.
There's this beautiful hair. Uh okay, so yes are we so? Blimps
were considered ideal for training missions andfor patrolling the West coast for Japanese subs.

(18:18):
As for the size of the craft, they were one hundred and forty
seven feet long, thirty nine feetin diameter, and thirty four feet high.
If the blimps did happen to findany enemy subs, they were equipped
with two Mark seventeen depth bombs anda thirty caliber machine gun with three hundred
rounds of ammunition. There's like weaponsand bombs everywhere I know, and I

(18:41):
personally would not want to do battlein a very palpable balloon. Flammable balloon.
I mean, helium's a lot lessflammable, but I mean, I
guess that's one of the reasons I'mnot cut out for the military. Just
guys, I'm just gonna like,I'm just gonna out of this one.
I feel like it's not a goodidea. And they'd probably also take one

(19:04):
look at my wonky wrists and justbe like, no, thank you,
you can go home. We don'twant you. So the L class fleet
was assigned to Squadron thirty two, which operated out of the Moffatt Field Base
in California. They were tasked withthe anti submarine patrols, and for the
most part their missions were fairly uneventfuluntil August sixteenth, nineteen forty two.

(19:27):
What's today? August twentieth? Oh, I feel like I've had a weird,
like I don't know thing lately whereI do episodes around the date of
the event. Yeah, I meanit's very very green, very soon.
Not on purpose. So the starof our story was a former good Year

(19:47):
advertising blimp that was repurposed by theNavy and named the L eight. L
actually stands for love, so youjust repping my name in there. The
LA airsh had been recently inspected andwas ready for takeoff on a routine coastal
patrol early on the morning of Augustsixteenth. Up to that point, the

(20:08):
craft had conducted over a thousand tripswith no problems or significant encounters. Okay.
At approximately six am, two pilotsboarded the craft, twenty seven year
old Lieutenant Ernest DeWitt Cody and thirtyfour year old Ensigned Charlie or sorry Charles
Ellis Adams. Both men were marriedand were considered to be experienced pilots.

(20:33):
Although Cody was the younger of thetwo, he had the higher ranking,
but also had a lot of fewerflying hours on the blimpse than Ensign Adams.
Cody had about seven hundred and fiftysix hours of a flight time and
had only started flying them about ninemonths previous, but his commanding officers considered
him to be one of the mostlevel headed and capable pilots under their command.

(20:56):
Okay, thirty four year old EnsignAdams had two thousand, two hundred
and eighty one hours of flight timeunder his belt and had been working with
the LTA craft which stands for lighterthan air meeting blimps basically for twenty years
and was an experienced airship veteran.Okay, that's legit. Yeah. Adams

(21:18):
had even been decorated by the Germangovernment after he had helped rescue passengers from
the doomed Hindenburg Wild. He waslike on the site when it went down,
Oh my god, I would belike I'm done with blimps, thank
you seriously after seeing that, Likewe have a video of it. It's
not pretty, it's narse, it'snupernar yes, that's pretty wild. He

(21:41):
was involved in that. Wow.Even with all of that airship experience,
Adams had only received his commission theday before the August sixteenth flight, making
this his first flight as a commissionedofficer. Also aboard the airship was aviation
machinists mate Riley Hill. He wasinterviewed in Unsolved Mystery saying quote, Adams

(22:04):
had flown in the lards, Ican never say this word derigibles such a
weird word, and was thoroughly checkedout. But he had never flown in
the small blimps and this was anindoctrination flight for him. That Sunday morning,
just before takeoff, however, RileyHill was ordered off of the craft.

(22:25):
He believed it was because his addedweight would be too much for the
blimp to lift off in the currentweather conditions. Apparently there was heavy moisture
in the air which was not goodfor lift. So there's just gonna be
two guys on board, not three, okay. So Hill left the craft,
shut the door to the gondola whichis like the cabin thing that they
are in, and locked it behindhim. At six o three am,

(22:49):
Flight one oh one lifted off fromTreasure Island. Nice. Did you know
there's a treasure island? No,it's a man made island. I guess
they made it for like a World'sFair. Interesting. Yeah, but they
named a treasure island. It isn'tthat so cute. It's so weird that
humans just can decide to make land. It is strange. They're just like
stuffs an island here, and we'llname a treasure island. Sure. So

(23:15):
Flight one on one's mission was topatrol within a fifty mile radius of San
Francisco. Wait, did you sayit was Flight one on one? Yes?
Oh, do you see the connection? I know I did not make
that connection. So many creepy things, many synchronicities all around weird. Oh

(23:37):
my god, I don't know howI did not catch that. I thought
it's wild. Okay, So,yes, they were to patrol within a
fifty mile radius at San Francisco. The flight plan called for the men to
leave Treasure Island, pass over theGolden Gate Bridge, which would just be
magical to do in a blimp.Yeah, then head to the Fair Lawn
Islands, twenty five miles off thecoast. From there, Flight one on

(23:59):
one would continue north to Point Reyes, then south along the coastline, where
they would eventually circle back towards theGolden Gate Bridge. The weather that day
was overcast, with light winds andvisibility at three to five miles, so
the first hour and a half ofthe trip went smoothly. But at seven
thirty eight am, four miles offthe coast of the Fairlawn Islands, Lieutenant

(24:22):
Cody radioed headquarters and said, quote, m investigating suspicious oil slick. Stand
by Headquarters didn't know it yet,but these would be the last words anyone
would hear from the two men. They're creepy oil slick. So they're looking
down. Yeah, so they're costinglike a rainbow slick. Yeah. They're

(24:47):
constantly monitoring the water for submarine activity. Okay, makes sense. Yeah,
so they're always flying over the waterfor the most part, So spotting an
oil slick in the water could indicatethat there was an enemy sub lurking below
the water, so naturally the LAstopped to investigate. Also located nearby was
a fishing trawler named the Daisy Grayand the liberty ship called the SS Albert

(25:11):
Gallatin. Bowl ships witnessed the airshipdropped two smoke flares on the location of
the oil slick, which would makesense if they were trying to mark the
location for the US Air Force flyingoverhead to investigate, Oh, smoke flares
you said, yeah, okay, okay, or to mark the location for
themselves. When the SS Albert Gallatinsaw the flares drop, they quickly moved

(25:33):
their ships away and manned their machineguns, fearing an enemy sub could be
within the vicinity. The fishing trawlerwas much closer to the airship and claimed
they could even see the two menmoving around inside the gondola and were close
enough to distinguish their hair color.O The men aboard the trawler quickly drew
their fishing nets back into the boat, fearing the LA would drop its depth

(25:56):
charges into the sea on an unsuspectingup. They're like, oh shit,
all fish get them in. Bothships waited and watched with anticipation, expecting
a bomb to be dropped at anymoment, but it never came. Both
ships reported that the only thing theysaw dropped from the blimp were the smoke

(26:18):
flares. They watched some through binocularsas the airship circled the area of the
oil slick for over an hour,The blimp flew two to three hundred feet
above the water, and at onepoint even descended closer to the water until
it was only about thirty feet abovethe waves, as if it was going

(26:38):
in for a closer look. Okay, it's kind of a long time to
be circling around, right, likean over an hour. Yeah, and
like it's a big blimp, yeah, close to land, like so that's
like unusual the sea, right,Yeah, so they're in the ocean,
but I mean these other two shipsare like watching this whole thing happened with
the hell Yeah. Oddly during thisentire sequence of events, headquarters were met

(27:03):
with radio silence from the light. They never checked back in. After that
initial call, Headquarters tried to getback in touch with the two men,
but were met with silence. Okay, apparently it wasn't totally out of the
norm for the airships to lose contactduring patrol, but when they had still
hadn't been heard from. At eightfifty two Kingfisher floatplanes were ordered to head

(27:27):
out in search for the airship.A signal was also relayed for other aircraft
in the area to be on thelookout for the blimp. Then, shortly
after nine am, the light droppedballast and rose back into the air on
a controlled flight back towards San Franciscoinstead of its intended route to Point Reyes,
which was in a different direction. As far as the fishing trawler and

(27:51):
the Liberty Ship were concerned, nothingseemed to be out of the ordinary with
the blimp. It just seemed likeit had been going about on a routine
patrol. Sadly, though, thissighting would be the last time either man
aboard the airship was ever seen again. It's creepy, very it's very ooky,
spooky. Now. The sighting ofthe blimp over the next couple of

(28:12):
hours is varied and a little confusing, some contradicting each other or placing a
blimp in a location it could notpossibly have flown to and the time allotted.
But I guess that's just the mixedbag that comes with eyewitness testimony.
There's a lot of testimony that wasjust like m up, yeah, you
just want tension. After the LAwas seen leaving the area of the reported

(28:36):
oil slick at around nine am,the next sighting would be at ten forty
nine am. Okay, when aPan American clipper pilot reported seeing the airship
flying over the Golden Gate Bridge. The pilot reported that the flight appeared level
and controlled, nothing really out ofthe ordinary, and seemed to be heading
back towards base. Okay. Thenext reported sighting was at eleven am,

(29:00):
so that's only like ten minutes laterby one of the Kingfisher floatplanes that had
been sent to search for the blimp. They said they saw the airship three
miles west of Salada Beach, risingthrough the hazy overcast at about two thousand
feet on a seemingly controlled flight. So there's still no communication with the men
in the blimp, but there's sightingsof it correct weird, very weird.

(29:25):
So they're up at two thousand feet, which is high, high for a
blimp. It is high for ablimp, or at least that blimp.
Moments later, the blimp began todescend and disappear into the clouds. What
was strange about this sighting was one, it would be really difficult or impossible
for the blimp to travel that farfrom the first sighting only ten minutes prior,
and two the pilots would have knownthat flying at two thousand feet was

(29:48):
not recommended, as that altitude wasclose to the blimps pressure height. I
mean, is it too early tosay aliens were involved? That's definitely a
theory good. Once the blimp flewtoo high, its valves opened automatically to
start venting helium in order for thegas cells not to burst from the pressure,
So it was highly unusual that thepilots would have ignored those parameters.

(30:14):
The next sighting of the blimp wasby an army pilot who claimed to see
the L eight near Mile Rock andsaid everything seemed normal. He thought that
the blimp must be headed back towardsTreasure Island. The L eight was again
spotted by a man named Richard Quam, who was an off duty seaman.
Quam was driving along the Coastal Highwaybetween San Mateo and San Francisco when he

(30:37):
saw the blimp off in the distance, but noted it seemed to be oddly
deflated in the middle oh. Quamclaimed to have taken a photo of the
blimp, but the film was laterconfiscated by the authorities. No fun sketch
haters. The next concrete sighting thatI have seen reported it in every time.

(31:00):
Helling of the story came at elevenfifteen on Ocean Beach in San Francisco,
a man named mister caba Villa wasout on the beach enjoying his day
living his best California life when hespotted a blimp coming out of the mist.
The massive gray shape solidified as itseemingly was floating right towards him.

(31:22):
The man noted that the craft wasflying very low and rather aimlessly, as
though it were being pushed by thewind instead of operated by a pilot.
That's so eerie, I know,it's such a big thing just floating around,
just so creepy. It was onlyabout fifty feet above the water,
and its engines were silent. Healso noticed that the airship was rather deflated,

(31:48):
heavily sagging in the middle. Cabavillawatched as the craft continued on its
path towards the beach, momentarily touchingdown on the sand before continuing on until
it hit the side of a hill, bending the propellers and packing a bunch
of dirt and leaves into one ofthe engines. Okay, upon impact,
the jarring also caused one of thedepth charges to come loose and fall off.

(32:14):
Luckily, what's that depth charge is? Basically a bomb. Oh shit.
Yeah. Luckily it didn't detonate,as it only exploded when triggered by
water pressure, because these bombs aremeant to be dropped into the water subs.
So it just rolled down the hill. But can you imagine, holy
shit run. But after the heavydepth charge was gone, the decreased weight

(32:38):
allowed the blimp to float back upinto the air, where it cleared the
hill and continued on its strange journeythere. It's like people on the ground
trying to follow this blimp. Yeah, like it starts to draw a crowd.
I would totally follow a mystery blip. Oh my god, how kind
of fun um so interesting? Yeah, it's this story is just so weird.

(33:00):
Okay, So dozens of people ata nearby golf course witnessed the rather
injured looking blimp lazily float past, heading further inland to Daily City. By
now, the authorities had been notifiedand the police and fire department began to
pursue the airship as it floated along. They were, of course, also

(33:21):
joined by countless curious California citizens whowere also following the aimless blimp. It's
kind of like a crowd of peoplejust yea. As the blimp reached Daily
City, it was seen by hundredsof bewildered people, including a sixteen year
old girl named Bunny Gillespie. Wasthat a cute name? Was cute?
She said, quote, I wason the way home from Sunday school because

(33:44):
it's happened on a Sunday, andsaw this big gray thing coming in over
what I thought was going to beright over Templeton Avenue. When I saw
this thing coming in through the sky, I was very surprised, as there
were a lot of other people, because things like that just didn't happen in
Daily City. Yeah, anywhere. No, it seems like like it's totally

(34:05):
weird fictional movie happening, like somekind of weird like dystopiate in fifties,
like sci fi movies like One.Another man also witnessed the sagging ship,
hilariously describing it as looking like abig broken wiener. Okay, how old
are we here? I'm thinking hemeant like a hot dog, But oh

(34:28):
you precious like hot Look that bigbroken weener sky weener. Amazing h Okay.
So the stunt observers watched as thepartially deflated airship began to lose more
altitude, heading straight for the homesand suburbs of Daily City. Oh my

(34:49):
gollege, you're just in your homeand a mysterious blimp. Okay, it's
victim would be a home owned bymissus Ethel Appleton Ethel V's names I know,
so forties. I don't know whatof him Ethel and Bunny. I
love it. Yeah, who wasjust minding her own business when her entire
house went dark as the sky wasblocked out by a large gray craft scraping

(35:15):
over the roof of her house. That's terrifying, yeah, she said.
It sounded like chains dragging you.I mean, like what a day.
That's just what you are never preparedfor it. And it being dog too,
that's just so creepy. Yeah,I mean because it's like what not
early in the day, it's likemid day and you're like in the morning

(35:37):
black because the sun got blocked downand did Like it's it's slow moving floating
obviously, right do we know them? Like miles per hour? Like no,
nobody really said how fast it wasgoing. I'm picturing a slow ass
moving floating blend. Yeah, becauseit's not it's a broken arm like actively
like powering the thing, right,so it deflated. Yeah, so she's

(36:00):
kind of floating along. Please tellokay, never mind, I'm not gonna
keep going. Okay. So MissusAppleton held her eight year old daughter close
in fear and ran to her frontwindow to watch as the blimp passed over
her roof and continued to the frontof the house. A man named mister
Johnson was outside waxing his car whenhe saw the blimp heading towards him and

(36:23):
his home. He rushed inside outof concern for his mom, who was
within. They watched as the crafthit a utility pole, breaking off the
cross arm at the top and causingthe tail of the ship to swing around
into the telephone wires, signing downa shower of sparks. The impact had

(36:45):
finally punctured the balloon and the craftbegan to fall tail first towards the ground.
Can you guess where? It landed? On top of a house,
On top of mister Johnson's freshly waxedcar. Om Man all that way.
Oh that's like a movie scene,it really is. I just waxed it.

(37:07):
So the hood was dented and theheadlight was damaged as well. Tough
break but dude. Luckily, though, the car would be the only injured
party in the blimps crash landing, which is pretty lucky. I mean,
like, yeah, it's a bigcraft. Nobody got hurt. The people
and officials who had been chasing therunaway blimp converged on the scene. Bunny

(37:29):
Gillespie arrived just after the landing, saying she had missed the initial landing,
but when she got there, itlooked like a great, big gray monster
with the gondola jutting up towards thetops of the houses. It was huge.
Military officials, police and firefighters allapproached the airship, expecting to find
a couple of dazed pilots inside ofthe gondola, but when they peered inside

(37:52):
the cabin, they found it completelyempty. No, I was saying,
please tell me they're not missing. They're missing people up in there, and
there is and the aliens involved forsure. I'm so how have I never
heard of this? I don't know. It's the most wild story and just
like a nun dundone moment, becauselike it's empty ship. Before we continue

(38:15):
on, I think we should justtake a quick break. Okay, welcome
back, Okay, ready for themystery to continue. I've taken a couple
of deep breaths, so I'm ready. Okay. So the immediate area was
searched, but there was no signof Cody or atoms, and it would

(38:38):
have been unlikely that they could haveescaped without detection upon landing. After gathering
such a large crowd that was watchingthis, sure, officials began to inspect
the gondola, and their confusion aboutthe event only increased by what they found.
First of all, I'm already mad. First of all, the door,

(39:00):
which could only be opened from within, this is what I was going
to ask, okay, was latchedopen, which was highly unusual during flight,
and the safety bar used to blockthe doorway was no longer in place.
Okay. Investigators also noted that themicrophone connected to a loudspeaker system used

(39:20):
to hail ships in the water wasoff its base and dangling outside of the
door. Inside, they found theengines were still on and in the idling
position. The fuel gage indicated thatthey still had four hours of fuel left,
which was odd because they started offwith twelve hours. So at some

(39:42):
point the pilots had to have dumpedabout thirty percent of their fuel. An
unlikely maneuver was that sorry was sometimesdone in an effort to quickly lose some
weight in order to rise quickly.Oh interesting, I was going more towards
the direct like just time loss.Yeah, like because I'm still on the

(40:07):
alien boat here kind of warmhole.Yeah. Like it like there was some
sort of time warp. Yeah, that's definite. Aliens a fury at the
end, like, yeah, somekind of weird that's that's pretty common in
like abduction stories. It's like timeloss. Like, right, you're driving
and then you look at the cockand then you're three hours ahead. Yeah,
and in this case you have likethe proof of gas being gone.

(40:30):
Interesting okay, uh so hanging onthe hooks. Inside were three untouched parachutes
and one life jacket. Two lifejackets were missing. That made sense as
the pilots were required to wear themduring flight. Oh, which makes sense
because they're flying over water. Theexpandable life raft was left untouched, as

(40:52):
was the machine gun on board. There were two missing smoke flares out of
the five kept on board, butthose had already been accounted for by the
witnesses and the ships near the oilslick. Right, the radio was still
perfectly functional, turned on and workingand eerily. Lieutenant Cody's cap rested on
the instrument panel. His hat.His hat, oh eerie, so eerie.

(41:20):
Inside, officials also located a lockedbriefcase containing top secret codes, still
untouched and in its rightful place, behind the pilot seat. Rosco was input.
The briefcase was weighted so that ifthe craft became compromised, the case
could be thrown overboard, where itwould sink to the bottom of the sea.

(41:43):
But that wasn't done, okay. The only thing really missing was the
men. It was as if theyhad vanished into thin air because the aliens
stick them. It was like, why are we even continuing? It was
the aliens already solved it. Everything'spointing. So over the next three days,

(42:04):
an extensive and exhaustive search was launchedfor the two missing men, but
not a single trace would ever befound of either of them. Did they
search They were searching over the ocean. Yeah, like the water, the
land, They're searching the whole.Even a piece of clothing, not a
scrap. Nothing was found, whichis so weird chills. After three days
of no luck, Cody and Adamswere officially declared missing, sad. Two

(42:30):
days after this, the Navy conveneda board of investigation that lasted seven days.
They spoke to over thirty five witnessesand came to the conclusion that quote
no fire, no submersion, nomisconduct, and no missiles struck the late.
The men from the Daisy Gray andthe SS Gallatin were also interviewed and
stated that they never saw any manfall from the gondola into the water,

(42:54):
and the aircraft seemed to be functioningnormally. As I said before, some
of them were raising binoculars and couldclearly see the two men inside of the
craft. Okay, you did mentionthat right. So, according to history
net dot com, sadly and ironically, the Gallatin would be sunk in January
nineteen forty four by an L twentysix, which is a Japanese submarine operating

(43:16):
the same waters where the Light hadbeen patrolling two years before. That's sad.
So after the inquiry was concluded, the Navy was no closer to finding
any answers than when they had started. A year after. Twenty seven year
old Lieutenant Ernest DeWitt Cody and thirtyfour year old Ensign Charles Ellis Adams went

(43:38):
missing. They were declared legally dead, much to the horror and sadness of
their wives and family. Oh that'straject that's so traumatizing. There's no closure,
Like it's a complete freaking mystery,and you're it's just gone. I
would I would never settle, Iwould never sleep. And they weren't in
like an active battle or anything. So you can't just assume that they were

(43:59):
killed by an end to me,like you just have nothing to go on.
Oh, that's the worst. Thecase would be declared one unknown slash
undetermined. Wow, they did makea statement quote, careful analysis of the
evidence indicates no reason for voluntary abandonmentof the airship. The board therefore believes

(44:19):
that abandonment was involuntary. But there'sso many questions left unanswered. What happened
to the two men between the timethey reported the oil slick off the Farallons
at seven forty two am and whenthe blimp came ashore at around eleven fifteen
am. Yeah, but what wasthe time where they noticed it was first
deflated? That would have been Ithink it was around like eleven really,

(44:44):
Okay, so it's still that manyhours between, still quite a because in
between that people were still saying,Oh, it looks like it's in control.
It looks like it's patrolling. Right, So they spotted the oil slick
at seven forty two, but Ithink the ships that were near I said
that they saw them leaving at aroundnine Okay, so between nine am and

(45:05):
eleven fifteen am is like this windowand they've spotted a few times, but
there's like, no, they're definitelynot on their regular flight path from what
the people where people are seeing them. Okay, So if their radio silence
or so, if their radio hadbeen in you know, perfectly sound working
order, why had they stopped usingit after the initial report? And it's

(45:25):
not like it's old technology, soit's not like that we would be able
to hear any like ruckus or likeright, like you have to push a
button and yeah, it's not justlike continually recording. Yeah, yeah,
Okay. Witnesses had seen them operatingthe craft around the oil slick and a
seemingly normal fashion, So why hadthey stopped communicating? Yeah, that's so
strange. Why had they vanished fromthe craft with no indications of foul play

(45:51):
and without sending a distress signal?Right, none of it makes any sense,
but we may as well talk theories. The official theory put forth by
the Navy was that both men werelost shortly after sending the transmission about investigating
the oil's lick. They hypothesized thatperhaps after dropping the smoke flares, the
copilot may have fallen out of thegondola into the water, or perhaps clung

(46:15):
to the side after trying to inspectthe water or possibly trying to fix a
mechanical issue. He would have criedout to the other pilot, who,
in his haste to rescue the otherman, did not deploy a life raft
or report to headquarters what was happening. In his attempt to rescue with the
other man, he also fell overboard. The sudden weight loss of the ship

(46:36):
would cause it to float upwards, high into the sky, as was witnessed
later on in the day. Afterit climbed too high, the automatic pressure
valves would have activated, releasing heliumand bringing the craft back down, which
is why it was partially deflated whenit landed. Okay, I mean it
makes sense in a way, butso supporting this theory was the microphone dangling

(47:00):
outside of the open door as ifthe pilot had been attempting to communicate with
the copilot who may have already beenin the water. Okay, it was
also sorry. It has also beensaid that this is why the crap descended
to such a close range above thewater, so that the pilot could search
for his fallen co pilot. Thereare issues with this theory, though,

(47:22):
most glaringly where the nearby witnesses onthe fishing trawler and Liberty Ship who reported
reportedly saw none of these things happen, and they saw the blimp leave on
a controlled flight path. I alsosaw one source say that if the first
man had dropped from the initial heightof around three hundred feet, the drop

(47:43):
would have been devastating and he wouldhave immediately sunk. Oh interesting, okay,
which is like, okay, butwhat about the life jackets. They
were booth they were wearing, soit would have to eat. Yeah,
even if he died on impact,he would you would still think he'd float
like nobody and the articles ever mentionsthe fact that even if they did fall
in, wouldn't they still be floatingfor at least a little bit? Like

(48:07):
the jackets were also reportedly bright yellow. Wouldn't the other ships have spotted such
a bright color floating in the water. Okay, this is not right.
And even if they didn't see them, wouldn't some trace of their bodies still
eventually be found, Right, It'snot like they're in the middle of the
ocean, they're kind of they're nearland, that's true. Also, they

(48:30):
had this loudspeaker system. If thepilot had been using that to communicate with
the copilot, wouldn't the other shipshave heard that as well? They were
close enough to hear that. Idon't know, but I mean it's a
loudspeaker, Like it's loud enough tohail ships when they're in the air that
are in the sea, So Iwould think it would be loud. Yeah,

(48:52):
So that was another problem I hadwith that theory. And if the
pilot had time to use the loudspeaker, why would he not also have informed
the command of the situation at hand. I mean they said they were flying
around the area for like an hour. Yeah, let's say so. You
know, both men were experienced pilots, they would have known to report back

(49:15):
to headquarters for help. And ifthere was in fact a mechanical issue with
a ship that the copilot had beentrying to fix. Why would they also
not have reported that along with thesuspicious oil slick? So that doesn't make
sense to me either. I alsosaw a theory that the men were attacked
by sharks after falling into the water. I mean I did think of that

(49:36):
for a second. Apparently there isa large population of Great Whites in the
area, but again, seems unlikelythat this would have been missed by the
nearby ships. Blood. Yeah,a shark attack is kind of a thing,
messy, Yeah, and there wouldbe like, I mean, grotesquely
body parts like left. So yeah. Another theory is that the men descended

(49:59):
closer to the water to inspect theoil slick and were taken prisoner by a
Japanese sub that was in fact lurkingbelow the waves. Again, how would
this have been missed? Breaking yourright ships? Why wouldn't the Japanese have
confiscated the briefcase with top secret infoin it? True? The theories from
here just get wild, like morewild strapping. I mean, I don't

(50:21):
think oh it's coming. So thetwo men were actually spying for the Japanese
and met up with them at alater point to escape to Japan. Uh,
what do you call that espionage doublespy. So that's one theory.

(50:43):
There was a stowaway on board whopossibly killed both pilots and then I don't
know, also fell overboard. No, the two pilots were in a steamy
love triangle with an unknown woman andin a jealous rage, killed each other.
Or one killed the other and thenescape and or fell overboard. No,

(51:05):
I didn't see this one online. But hey, maybe they fell in
love with each other and then ranaway to the sunset. That's kind of
sweet. Sweet. Perhaps they justwent plain old a wall. How they
leave their families, It doesn't makesense. How about a rogue wave?
Why not? Fun? Just throwthat in there. There's always a rogue

(51:28):
wave, interdimensional time shift, soBermuda triangle shift, Like they disappeared into
an alternate universe. Maybe yeah,I mean doctor Strange showed up and opened
this portal for them. They're like, cool, it's good, We're just
gonna leave this splimp behind and seewhat happened. And of course our favorite
go to theory, they are objectedby alien. I mean, I really

(51:50):
don't think it's not crazy? AmI that crazy that I don't think that
crazy? Like, of course, aliens. That's the only plausible explanation chain
if nothing makes it's aliens, right, that's the combet denominator. It's aliens.
I mean that theory is as goodas the rest because we are never
going to know the real answers.Furiating. It's been so long already,

(52:12):
I know, and if nothing hasbeen found up to this point, like
it's probably just never going to besolved. That is so eerie. Wow,
you're right, like this is oneof my favorite times says it's so
weird, so weird. As forthe fate of the infamous ghost blimp,
it was quickly repaired and put backinto service as a training vessel after the

(52:37):
war. The blimp on tend toplay the two men would think, I
would not want anything to do withit. After the war, the blimp
was put back into use in sportingevents under the good Year Tire and Rubber
Company took it back where it wasrenamed America. That's weird. I feel
like they shouldn't have reused it.Yea, like this has got some bad

(52:59):
vibes. This is a mystery, like two men mysteriously left, Like I
feel like you should put that ona museum and hit. Well. Uh
so it did its route, youknow with sporting events. But then eventually
it did find a home at theNaval Aviation Museum Okay, good Pencacle,
Afforida, where it is on displayand remains to this day. Sports tainted

(53:22):
it and isn't it weird? Likeso it did the sporting events from nineteen
sixty nine to nineteen eighty two,and like there were so many people that
would have seen it that had noidea that it was like this infamous blimp,
mystery blimp where two guys mysteriously left. Yeah, they're just like,
oh, it's a blimp, Likeit's a famous blimp. Like that's just

(53:44):
wild. I definitely would totally gosee that if I. I mean,
I was all supportive, like yeah, but yeah, it's just it's such
a mystery. It's so tragic thattheir families never got any closure. Like
I can't imagine living with that. It's just but yeah, I'm sorry for
those people. And that, folks, is all I have on the mysterious

(54:06):
ghost blimp. Wow, Wow,great job Abby. That there's a story.
I don't know how I never everheard of that. It's not super
like overdone and which is wild becauseit's such a weird story. It's like
extra eerie because it's a slow movinglarge craft that isn't in working condition.
And then the guys aren't. They'rejust gone. And people saw them in

(54:30):
the gondola leaving the scene, likethey supposedly saw them leaving, so they
had to disappeared after they left theoil slip. But like, and there's
hours of witness sightings of all ofthis. Yeah, and even though they
weren't communicating, even though they were, like people could see them in the
gondola for that time, Like, why weren't they communicating? Yeah, it's

(54:52):
just so weird. Oh, there'sso many questions. These kinds of stories
like make me so mad because Ijust need answer so much and I know
I'm not going to get them.Yeah. Wow, Well I feel some
type of way, I mean toounsatisfied, Yeah, angry, excited,
upset. Do you guys have anyother theories? Michael, what do you

(55:13):
think happened? It's unknowable which wasits aliens? For sure, He's just
gonna say it because he's smart enoughnot to say it. Yeah, it's
just I did I think there thereis a video I was watching where they
were talking about like a time riftor like you know, like Bermuda Triangle

(55:34):
shit, like, yeah, youknow lost time and there was lost fuel
and why it's also so strange.I mean, I guess there is the
explanation of like I guess, dumpingsome fuel, but there's also sightings of
it where it couldn't have possibly haveended up. So it's like, I
don't maybe there was just bad witnesses, but if they weren't bad witnesses,
like how would it have appeared intwo different areas and a time allotment work

(55:57):
just couldn't have possibly gotten there. So there's just so many weird that's even
an extra weird element. Yeah, you don't even think about I'll definitely post
pictures the ones that there's like onewith it flying partially defleated that it's just
the weirdest looking shit. It isjust like that is so eerie. I
can't believe. I mean, Ican't believe there's pictures, but I want
to see them right now. Andit just lands in the middle of the

(56:19):
suburbs unline someone's work scar. Yeah, that's so strange. The whole thing,
the whole thing is very eerie, and I just love a good like
naval mystery. I don't know why, like the Mary Celeste, Like I
think I've always wanted to cover thatone. Yes, I've looked at that
one a few times. It's sucha good mystery. Yeah, I mean
when I watch like alien shows, which I started another one it's called Alien

(56:43):
End Game. It's really good onDiscovery. Plus there's a handful of stories,
but they're all from pilots, likefrom the Navy or you know,
like yeah, those official channels arealways the creepiest ones. Yeah, or
it's just like what they have everythingto lose by talking about seeing something like
that on like government time. Butthat's also like quality, like legit quality,

(57:06):
like qualified people like you know, that's why it makes it so like
and they're the ones actually having themost sightings, right, And I'm sure
there's been a lot that people justwon't talk about either, Yeah, because
they're freaking silenced. Wow, amazing. I'm one hundred aliens on this one.

(57:27):
Yeah, you guys, let usknow what you think. Sure,
I am curious. Um, Ijust love to poke holes in people's series
too. I'm like, what aboutthat you do? But that's also great.
It's a good quality you have.Thanks. I'm a hater of everyone.
Seriously, I called Chat a haterall the time. You're all wrong.

(57:50):
I don't have answers, but Ijust know you're wrong. All right?
Should you? City of the week? Okay, let's do it,
and this week goes to Detroit,Michigan, Michigan? Is it auto city?

(58:14):
What is that? What your Detroitis? I have no ice,
worry I got that wrong? Anythingabout your city? Thank you? I
love your support. Thank you somuch. Motor city. Maybe that's what
it's called motor city. Um,thank you very support. We appreciates you
for being the top listener this week, for listening. If you want to
be top listener, binge bench theship out of this show. We have

(58:37):
one hundred and one episodes now,so truly be some bench worthy things.
Yeah, you could listen to itfor like two days straight probably and hate
us. Yeah, I'm very sure. What about let's see what are we
watching? What are we listening to? Shanna? You go first? Um?

(58:57):
Well kind of mentioned this before oneof our spontaneous dates that me and
joh went to go see Top Gunin the movie theaters. So ic we
lived our best life watching that I'mlearning. Even though Chad has mentioned this
throughout the years, I always forget. But then he's like, really a
Tom Cruise fan, which is honestlyvery surprising to me. It surprises me

(59:17):
every time because obviously I never remember, and I'm like, wait, you
really loved Tom Cruise. Yeah,I mean I like a good Tom Cruise
movie every once in a while.I mean, he's in pretty great movies.
But then you have to remember, like, oh, it's just scientologist.
Like that's kind of weird. Iknow, but it's weird. They're
like, oh, you're kind ofcrazy, but you make good movies sometimes.

(59:40):
Yeah, it was a good movie. It's a good time. I
still haven't seen it. Definitely haveseen the original Top Gun. Yeah,
I had to watch the original.I hadn't, so I had to watch
it before we win. Yeah, just make him watching or like waiting for
those guys to make out the wholetime never happens. So eighties, so
so stereotypical, very eighties. Imean that movie is doing really well,

(01:00:04):
Like Top Gun. It's like,oh, it's like, isn't it like
one of the highest grossing movies.Yeah, I was surprised. I was
like, Okay, I guess peopleare super into this. People are really
into it. I mean I getit, but like one was enough for
me, you know, yeah, but that was fun. So that's what
I watched. Um, what aboutyou. Wow, we've just been watching
