Speaker 1 (00:00):
I had written a verse of that album American Rock
and Roll in that song about Slash.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Welcome to the podcast Appetite for Distortion, Episode number five
hundred and twenty five. My name is Brando. Welcoming to
the podcast, mister Don Felder. I'm currently running a radio
tour for him. But now it's my turn to speak
with Don, my turn for an interview. If you're not
familiar with all that jargon, I'll explain on the back end.

(00:29):
But first, well, Don, your next interview is with me. Actually, well,
I know, are.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
You appetite for destruction?

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Distortion?

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Distortion?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Ye?

Speaker 1 (00:42):
That I saw that and I went now that somebody's
going to be a guitar player or something, or do
you play guitar yourself?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
I haven't no idea how to play guitar, but I'm
a Guns and Roses fan.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
See how connection?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, And we didn't plan this. We discussed it.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Sure, if you're watching on YouTube, you're wearing a Guns
and Roses shirt.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
We did not call each other last night. We did
not plan this.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
No, I didn't get the guns and shirt NEMO last
night about wear Guns and Roses T shirt. I just
reached in my suitcase and pulled out the first black
shirt and put it on, and you said, you did
you know that? I'm a big guns and roses man.
I like, no, why did you have that shirt on?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
It?

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Just sheer coincidence, you know.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Oh, I love it.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
And we're going to talk because that's what I do,
because everyone and their mother has a podcast. I like
a six degrees of GNR Bacon, That's what I call it.
So I will address your connections to G and R
at the end, But first and foremost, just welcome to
the podcast, Thanks for coming on, and thank you for
the mean reason why you're here today, the Rock and
Roll Retreat Sweepstakes to benefit Saint Jude's Children Research Hospital.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Because before the air.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
We were talking about my young two year old son
and he just had a call the other week and
I'm freaking out.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
I can't even imagine what parents go through. So can
you just talk.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
About the sweep steaks, how you got involved in, why
it's so important to you, what people can win.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Well, I have been a big sponsor and supporter of
Saints Chiltern Hospital for decades. I've done a lot of
fundraisers where a bunch of us get together at their events,
their golf events, and me and Kevin Cronin and Alice
Cooper and a bunch of people will get together and
put on a show to help raise money for it.

(02:25):
And when you see these parents walk out on stage
with their tiny little kids that have just survived cancer,
the tears and the whole crowd to start pouring out.
You want to give as much as you can to
try to help save as many kids' lives as you can. Plus,
I did a fundraiser for them down in Memphis last year,

(02:47):
and I went over to the hospital for the first
time and got a tour of the hospital and the
gal that was giving us a tour, I said, well,
how long have you been working for Saint you? She says, Oh,
they don't pay me. I've donated my time. And I said, well,
why would you do that? She said, I was brought
here as a child with cancer and I was saved
by Saint Jud's. So I donate my time, my effort.

(03:10):
Why not to help support them the best I can.
So I was so moved by that, I said I
got to do something else. See, So my girlfriend came
up with the idea to do a rock and roll
sweep sakes, and it's amazing package. One hundred percent of
every dollar that comes in goes to the Saint Jude
Children's Research Hospital. There's no administration fees, there's no nothing.

(03:34):
You give a dollar, it goes to Saint Jude. So
the package is the most important thing. You get around
trip airfare for two people to Nashville, Tennessee. You get
three nights at the Broadways Suite at the Western Hotel,
which has got to be the biggest suite I've ever
stayed in, and I've stayed in pretty big sweets in
my life. An amazing hotel. You get to go over

(03:58):
to the Gibson Garage with me and go down into
the historic, legendary Gibson Vault where they have all of
the original old first Less Paul's and first acoustic guitars
that you can actually take out and play them. That
it's close to the public. You have to go with
someone like myself that can get you in down there.

(04:19):
So we'll go down to the bottom of the vault
at the Gibson Garage and play around with some guitars.
The next day I'm going to do a showcase there
at the Gibbson Garage, where I'll be speaking and performing
at Gibson and playing all my Gibson guitars. I'll probably
do some Q and A stuff there. You'll also win

(04:40):
a white double neck twelve seventy five, just like the
one I play, which will be donated by Gibson as well.
They've just been a wonderful sponsor with this. You're going
to win a one on one guitar lesson with me. Now,
one of my old students back in high school who
I gave a couple of lessons to turned out to

(05:01):
have a huge music career. It was a guy named
Tom Petty. And who knows, you might get a lesson
with me and turn out to have a huge musical
career yourself. It's happened to us. It could happen again.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Of course.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
And then you're going to get a couple of tickets
to the Musicians Hall of Fame. I'll go with you.
We'll go over and I'll show you my exhibit, all
the other historical musicians exhibits from Record Productions and Sun Records. Mate,
it's a great museum. It's where it's been at least
a few hours over there. Now to get involved with this,

(05:37):
you got to go to don felder dot com slash
contests and it'll take you right directly where you can
sign up and register for this sweepstake and make a
donation too. So for every fifty dollars that you donate,
you get a ticket in this sweep state drawing. So

(05:57):
you give one hundred dollars, you get two tickets. You
give two hundred dollars, you get four tickets. So the
more you donate to Saint Jus, the better your chances
are of winning this amazing thing. So donfelder dot com
slash contests is how you get involved with it. And
it really comes down to saving children's lives, which is
what this is all about. And if you've got kids,

(06:19):
yield only sympathize with how it must feel for parents
and the parents and the kids. They don't pay a dime,
there's no bill at the end of the time, their
complete donation. They fly the parents there, they house them
on the hospital campus, they provide food for them. I mean,

(06:40):
I've never seen an organization that worked like that, that
gave so much to children and their families. Then in
Saint Jujus is at the top of the top of
that kind of generosity.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Well ere among the top as well. You're there, So
just thank you for doing this and just all the
cool things that you're giving away. I mean, we I
know it should you should put in UH disclaimer. Could
be the next Tom Petty.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
You never know, uh.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
And I just want to say thank you because I
know we have a limited amount of time before I
actually have to start doing my job and get you
to the next station.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
But I wasn't. I was alwaysn't a sick kid in
the way that I was, Like.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
I was sick and terminal, but I have a neurological
disability where I wear leg braces. So I spent a
lot of time at Long Island Jewish on UH on
Long Island, and yeah, it's it's scary when you're a
kid and they have your parents there and they're trying
to figure out where's the money coming from. And so uh,
people like you just thank you for doing that. Obviously,

(07:40):
the hospital thank you that they exist, but you know
you're bringing attention that maybe that they they weren't getting.
And and Y with a really cool UH prize pack
is to spend time with you. So while I get
to spend time with you again, I can't believe you're
wearing a Guns and Roses shirt today. So the six
Degrees of G and R Bacon you've you've played with
with Slash four on stage Hotel California. Can you talk

(08:02):
about that experience and believe he was for Gibson events
if I'm yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
You know, Gibson is wonderful and they put together some
of the best exempt exhibits live their whole vault. I
got a call. Slash played on my last album, American
Rock and Roll, and we known each other and hung
out and done some charity things here and there. But
Gibson asked us if we would get together and play

(08:27):
a hotel and something else. I think it was Pride
and Joy where we were just jamming on the blues
track at Anaheim Nam Show, so we were yeah, sure.
So we went out there and the place was packed.
I didn't realize it was going to be so full,
and it was a free event put on by Gibson.
So Slash and I just played the track and I

(08:49):
think somebody videoed it put it up on YouTube. So
I disrespect him so much. The last time he came
in to play on my record at my studio, he
come in and we have the track American Rock and
Roll up and so he sits down with his guitar.
He says, well, what do you want me to play?
I'm not going to tell you what to play your Slash.

(09:13):
I want Slash on this record. I don't know you
playing what I show you or tell you to play.
He said, okay, So we hit record. The two of
us are sitting there with a couple of guitars and
we just play like we normally jam on the stage,
and it turned out to be great. So I just
love him and thank him a great deal for being
so involved with Gibson and this charity and playing on

(09:36):
my record. I just have a great time working with him.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Awesome.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
And this is a question daniel I got from Instagram.
Is there a favorite thing you like about Slashes playing,
like why you asked him to be on your record,
other than just being Slash. Is there something that he
does that you really enjoy as a guitar player.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Yeah. I had written a verse of that album, American
Rock and Roll in that song about Slash, and I
thought it would be really appropriate to have him playing
the guitar fills around his own section of diverse.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
You know.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
So he lives not far from me down the street,
and so I called him up and said, hey, come
on over, grab a guitar, and that's something for you
to do. And he walks in and sits down, and
thirty minutes later we're done. You know, it's not like
a teeth pulling event that you kind of go through
to make it. It just comes out. So it was
really wonderful, a lot of.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
Fun, awesome.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
I appreciate you sharing that that story, and Don, just
thanks for your time. And I hope we get to
do this again interview. But we have a whole other
hour and a half of radio stations we got to
get to. So this is the end of appetite for distortion.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Let's go to Baltimore with Steve. So just hang tight.
Let me get him on the line. See multitasker, that's
what we got to do.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
I'm hanging So I moved Don on to other radio
stations to promote his charity. Talk about just all things
is guitar and the Eagles, And of course I'm the
only one who really talked to about guns or roses.
I mean, how crazy is that? Do not plan that?
I mean, yeah, there are people who know they're coming
on Appetite for Distortion and they know what I'm all about.

(11:15):
But sometimes, like with these radio tours that I do
for my actual radio job, they are just given a
list of stations and sometimes my name is on there
and they might not think twice about it until they
see it, oh, appetite for distortion. They might not put
put two or two together. Where I'm doing, Oh it's you.
The producer that's helping me with these interviews is also

(11:37):
going to interview me. So just fate happened with getting
some fun conversation with Don about that. So I'm gonna
wrap up this interview. You've got more to come, more
that are coming via the way of the radio tour.
Very fortunate to be in the position that I'm in.
But it was just National Radio Day. I'm celebrating my

(12:01):
twenty fourth year in the business. There have been some
minor hiccups in there as far as just like being unemployed,
but as far as radio is concerned, they are super minor.
Because I'm so lucky. This is a very volatile business
and the fact that I've stumbled upon this GNR podcast
to do this and tie it into my job has

(12:23):
just been one of the great opportunities of my career.
So twenty four years of radio, nine of the podcast,
but more interviews on Appetite for Distortion to come. So
what else does it come on? I guess the radio
tour version where it has kind of the awkward beginning
and awkward end. Glenn Hughes comes back to the podcast
and you may see Baby Brownstone making appearance for that one.

(12:49):
It's a fun time that also Bruce Dickinson returns to
the podcast. Now, if you're familiar, if you remember, I'll
i you a heads up. I could not I can't
bring up guns and roses to Bruce diickets In. It's
not him. It's not him saying it. It's the powers
that be. It's not even about GNR specifically. It's just

(13:12):
about anything that could be deemed as clickbait. So it's
focusing on the task in hand. So we're going to
talk about his solo stuff. But it's gonna be a
great conversation regardless of Bruce tickets In on the way,
Glenn Hughes on the way, still looking to working on
scheduling with Adam Baum. It's lots of cool stuff. Oh

(13:34):
and thank all of you so much for the feedback
that I got for the episode about Axel's voice. I
wasn't sure how it would be received. I kind of
always hide behind in a way, not just a microphone,
but in an interview. So what I'm out there, I
know it's very It's the opposite of how people are now.

(13:54):
People are talking heads. Listen to me, you know, eat
my opinion, all of that, eat it up. I'm not
like that, So when it's just me talking giving my opinion,
I always have some worry how it's going to be received.
But you know, for the most part, all of you
really enjoyed what I had to say, and I think
I'm going to do a part too. I didn't want

(14:14):
to do one initially with a vocal coach because I
thought that kind of defeated the purpose of my first episode,
because like, why do I need to be a vocal
coach to talk about this? But you know what, I'm
gonna interview one next time because I think I would
be doing a disservice to the conversation. And I think
it just more needs to be said about the perspective
on Axel and a lot of our older artists should

(14:38):
be expanded upon I think, so look forward to part
two of five. You know, I'll talk about Axel's voice.
That's what I ended up naming the episode. So until then,
remember the conversation continues in between the broadcasts on social
media Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, all that fun stuff. Please subscribe
on YouTube. I'm even on TikTok, and check out our

(15:00):
website afdpod dot com. You can check out really Cool March.
You can check out on this day in the history
of this GNR world, past episodes, so AfD pod dot com.
So until the next time, when we see the next episode.
In the words of Axl Rose, concerning Chinese democracy, I
don't know as soon as the word, but you'll see it.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Thanks to the Lamass security.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
I'm going home.
