Speaker 5 (03:04):
I'm Khadija aka D the name of my friend's designs
like Dach. I'm a CEO, but I like to say
she eo because I like just I like to be different.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
I am a boss, I am an entrepreneur. I am with.

Speaker 5 (03:21):
You don't know, Ariel as I'm a singer songwriter yet.
See I told you she's gonna learn some new stuff
about me today. Yeah. Yeah, So I've been singing since
the age of two. My mom always tells me little,
you know, stories about how she knew I was going
to be a singer. When she used to work in
a baby I would be sitting on the palette, you know,

(03:41):
watching mom, and they'd be playing music and I'll be
trying to do all these vocal acrobats this to you know,
keep up with the with the greats. As we were listening,
so she said that a lot of her coworkers would
be like that girl's gonna be a singer.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
So I am a singer.

Speaker 5 (03:55):
I've been singing on stage since the age of eleven,
and yes.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
I'm currently in a singing group. What else, what else?
What else? I am classically trained on.

Speaker 5 (04:06):
The piano, and that creativity goes over it, e stands
wide range.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
I am creative in every sense of the word.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
Not only am I an artist, you know, as a
vocalist and a pianist, all that stuff.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I'm also an artist with my hands. Uh.

Speaker 5 (04:22):
Designs by Dach is my brand. Uh that It's just
been amazing to have this brand that is literally touching
the lives of people doing something that I love to do.
Not having a clock into a nine to five, but
being able to turn the key to my own business
and you know, really create designs that I feel like

(04:46):
empower our community because we all know representation matters. So
I'm all about representation and shaking the table to normalize diversity.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
And yeah, I guess that's a little bit about me.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
That's great because that's what we like to do on
this podcast is shake the table. We ain't stared over here.
The mic is always yours. Anything you want to say,
you're more than welcome to it don't matter. So thank
you so much for being on the show. I know
you shared a little bit right there. Eleven You've been
eleven years old on stage, two years old, singing pianist
and singer. You're in a what was the you said?

(05:21):
You're in a group and the group what's the name
of the group band?

Speaker 5 (05:25):
We're called soul Essence. Soul s O U L soul Essence. Yes,
me and two other ladies.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Cool, No, that's really cool. See I didn't catch what
state you're in.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
I'm in Mississippi. Cricket letter, cricket letter, hump back, hump back.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
All right, Mississippi.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
That's so cool because it was interesting we were talking
last week. You're like, yeah, I'm gonna be in an
open mic. I was like, open mic, all right, cool,
that's dope. I want to what she's up like, Oh.

Speaker 5 (05:55):
Because I actually host a virtual platform as a musician,
as an artist, I love to It's just a beautiful
and I know, you know, as an artist, it's a
beautiful synergy to be able to share space with other
like minded individuals who are musically inclined. You get inspiration
from them, you know, they may gain inspiration from you.

(06:17):
It's just so beautiful. So I host an open mic
the name of mine. I also have a brand called
world Stage, and so I host that platform actually on
club House, and we extend further as well, and so
we do open mic night on Sunday nights.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Poetry.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
I'm a poet as well, so we do poetry, and
of course I have a lot of musicians come through
because I am both. I'm both a poet and a
singer songwriters. I love, you know, to share in that
kind of energy with others.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
May I hate you know? This is so great because
do you do it live in person? In Mississippi? An
open mic?

Speaker 5 (06:58):
Now, the open mic I don't necessarily to do live
Maybe one day but I do perform with my group,
and oh yeah in Michigan and you know, different events
that we have here in our community.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
I perform. I just performed for a graduation a couple
of weeks ago.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Awesome.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
So yeah, so I get the feeling. I performed later
today and then I played. I did an hour set
and let me tell you, when I was done, they
loved it. I loved it, and I was just so happy.

Speaker 5 (07:29):
It's something about just because, honestly, before all of this,
before Designs by D, before the girls and common that
you hear some it, my first love has always been music.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
So I'm always going to, you know, go back into my.

Speaker 5 (07:42):
Roots and everything, and it's just, you know, something about
music is transcendent, no matter where you're from, no matter
uh what, whatever what you believe in, et cetera. Music
has a way of just bringing everyone together and transcendent.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
So yes, hey, it's transcendent.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
I get that. I get that. And we've just been
killing this intro so far. You know what, Before we
get more into it, I just want everybody to know
that we're gonna do a quick gratitude because that's everybody.
Everybody loves the great gratitude part in the episode. So
we're gonna get a quick gratitude. Then we're gonna get
by by get back to designs by the guys. She's
got a lot to talk about. We got short little

(08:25):
times because here we go. The studios packed out today
to Alty packed out. Everybody in the lobby. We're so
happy to see me. It's been a while, so I
saw the whole team. So I'm so happy we are
back in the studio.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
I gotta give the huge round of applause because she
encouraged me to get back in the sea because I
could still be taking some time off if I wanted.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
To, and she just encouraged me, encouraged me and just.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
And I was like, it's time. It's time to get
back in the seat. I've been I've been relaxing too much.
So yeah, yeah, thank you so much for pushing me.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
All right, So here we go.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Quick gratitude, give oh my Gord, to my Lord, Save,
to ju, just Christ and I just want to give
it a quick gratitude to this amazing podcast, to DJ
being on the show, for our families, for safe travels,
for music, for singing, and you know, for our amazing
talents and all the blessings we have.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
I'm so grateful.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
So I got right now, all right, DS, back in
the episode, Hey D, if you want to tell us
what's going on in October?

Speaker 3 (09:26):
Oh you know, I want to tell you about what's
going on in October. You know.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Now I'm bringing it up right now. Here we go,
Zoom Zoom made Oh, here we go. Share Zoom has
made it so amazing, lady, there we go.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Guys, go check out our website too. We're gonna check
out our Instagram here in.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Just a second.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
But we got the website designs by DS dot com,
designs by D dot com.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
That's D E, S I G and S B Y
d I J dot com. That's the website. Go check
it out right now. All right, I'm gonna let her
have that. You got the mic?

Speaker 5 (10:00):
Okay, So this is we're preparing for the third annual
Curls and Convo Natural Hair.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Summit, which is my passion project.

Speaker 5 (10:12):
I'm so excited because, honestly, Ariel, the way it started
is actually is an extension from my brand Designs by Beeps. Right,
so you see all of this beautiful art that we
create to celebrate the beauty of natural hair, the beauty
of the culture.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
And so the reason I created the Curls and Convo Natural.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
Hair Summit is because I would notice that when a
lot of my customers would purchase one of my friends.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
As my umbrellas, as you can see back there.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
You know, that's one of our designs. And so when
one of our when when our customers would carry our umbrellas,
they would feel a sense of empowerment and celebrate it
to wear and rock their natural hair.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
Because honestly, we do live in.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
A society that shuns our natural hair as black women mostly,
you know, and so like in certain in society, it
can be deemed as untamped or unprofessional in the workplace
or in corporate America, or in the gyms or wherever,
you know, because we don't.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Chemically process are here necessarily some of us. And so
this event is just to I wanted to create an.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
Event that further empowered my cust not only my customers,
but the community and in rocking our natural hair loud
and proud.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
As you can see, my website says a lot of
things about natural hair. It says creating.

Speaker 5 (11:38):
Justice awareness around the beauty of our natural hair, and
this event is just that I haven't a flyer, but
I don't know, I don't think it's gonna come up
like you saw it on the website. So the event,
this is our third one, and it you know, it's
gonna be amazing. I have a host of licensed haircare
professionals who will be speaking on different topics to empower

(12:02):
and educate the community. Topics like you know, like length
and retention, topics like how to care for our natural hair.
Topics like how to handle certain conditions that some women
may experience, like separate thermatitis, like alopecia.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
We have an alopecia specialist speaking.

Speaker 5 (12:25):
We'll be touching on topics about the Crown Act and
natural hair discrimination, which is very important because honestly, here
in my state, the Crown Act has not been passed yet.
The Crown Act is a law that says that women,
you know, that society doesn't have a right to tell
women that, or tell anyone that they can't wear their

(12:46):
natural hair. So it hasn't been passed in my state,
but it's been passed in a lot of other states.
And so we're hoping that by continuing to use our
voices and by continuing to further champ in this movement
of natural hair awareness, natural hair empowerment that you know,
things like that won't happen, you know will be well.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
It'll be passed in.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
All states, all of the states.

Speaker 5 (13:11):
And not only that, but this event is an event
to bring us all together. I love to do things
that brings the community together. It's important because then we
feel seen and feel heard and feel understood.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
And so it's an event of just empowerment education.

Speaker 5 (13:27):
In fact, I hit the three e's aials, so empowerment,
education to entertainment. You know, I've already talked about me
being an artist, so you know how the weeds some
entertainment into it. So in between the featured speakers.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
The music, between the speakers, there's.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Gonna be a music.

Speaker 5 (13:47):
Area's gonna be amazing singers.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
In fact, there's one lady.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
She's from Nigeria, and that's why what I love about
physical event is that you know, anybody from anywhere can
come right and so she's from Nigeria and she is
a power house performer, a power house performer.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
She'll be performing.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
I have some poets that will be coming through who
are writing pieces specifically for this event, because I feel like, honestly,
I feel like poetry has the perfect way of putting
that exclamation behind the sentiment of an event and really
like encapsulating the movement.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
So as you can.

Speaker 5 (14:27):
See that had been is in twenty five days, sixteen hours,
twenty seven minutes and ten seconds.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
So that's a little.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
Bit about it.

Speaker 5 (14:34):
And we do have swag backs to everybody loves free stuff,
so do a natural Hair Trivia in between the events
that's going on, and so we ask questions to the audience.
For instance, if one of my speakers speak on, for instance, allocution,
one of.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
My people from our Natural Hair.

Speaker 5 (14:54):
Committee, I have them pick a question from something directly
that one of our speaks spoke about, and we asked
that question to the audience, and of course, whoever gets
the answer right first, when's the swag bag full of
amazing goodies from a lot of black owned businesses, from
hair care products to nail products to ooh bracelets and accessories.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
I was like, I wouldn't mind winning one of my.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
Swag bags, honestly, because I've packed them but nothing but goodies,
and everybody's always like, oh my god, I didn't know that.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
The swag baks are gonna be this amazing you know.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Yeah, yeah, that's a little bit about that.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
And it's so great that you do that.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
But with the swag bags, because that's how I feel
when I do with mine, I feel like I go
overboard with mine and I don't even get it. I
don't even get it like a swag bag, I said, everybody.
But and like you said, I would, like you said,
you're a flag bag. So dope that you know, it's
just that dope. Okay, So guys, it's happening. It's happening
in twenty five days. Twenty five days. We got twenty

(15:56):

Speaker 5 (20:00):
And you know, I forgot to mention Ariel, I'm glad
you mentioned that during the event, right the event that
you've just shared. We're actually I'm actually celebrating my five
year anniversary during the natural year something as well, so.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
It'll be officially five years.

Speaker 5 (20:18):
You know, before that, I was doing a little a
little you know, dabbling here and there, trying to figure
out how I wanted to bring this all together.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
Look at those party hats. I love it.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
I love it.

Speaker 5 (20:27):
So it's definitely gonna be a celebration and always celebration
off our natural hair, celebrating me being an entrepreneur during
the intermission and so yeah, so it started.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Off as.

Speaker 5 (20:41):
You know, just something that of course, something that I
conceived mentally. And it's actually a stationary and gift shop
so you can get your breading cards because I make
I make three dimensional handmade breading cards as well, which
is how the brand started. And these cards are like
structural work of art. Nothing you can find at a

(21:02):
It's not like you can't find that the mom and
the you know, it's not like a Mama Pop kind
of card. It's literally structural works of art that are
keepsake items. And from there, you know a lot of
the art that I was doing with my greeting cards.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
A lot of people resonated with the black.

Speaker 5 (21:19):
Art and everything, and that's how we expanded into a
full service, uh stationary in gift shop.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
So yeah, that's cool.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
And you said it started off three D cards some
kind of cards, were they?

Speaker 5 (21:34):
Yeah, So, like when they go on my website, you
can also search greeting cards all the cards I've created,
cards for fraternities, you know, because I went to an HBCU,
So during my HBCU experience, I got to know a
lot about like the fraternities. And so my most popular

(21:56):
greeting card since college has been the Alpha Phi Alpha cards.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
So I call the Alpha Man cards.

Speaker 5 (22:05):
And you go there, like it's literally a structural piece
of art.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
If you search Alpha Man card, Like right there, search
Alpha Man card.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
That's what I was gonna do. I want to do
it live, I want to do it. There we go
Alpha a l p oh, here we go a l
p h a Alpha card and m a n oh
Alpha Man card.

Speaker 3 (22:31):
Yeah, it's that first one right there.

Speaker 5 (22:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (22:41):
Wow, Yeah, something different you know, unique, and that's what
my whole.

Speaker 5 (22:52):
Brand message is unique handmade items for the culture, to
celebrate us.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
For the culture. And just you're killing it.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
You're just amazing things creating out of your mind. And
here it is on your website. People are loving it.
Designs by Beach dot com. You've got to get to
the questions. My producer is telling me, get back to
the questions.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
I'm going. I'm telling them.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
I'm trying, but I'm want everybody to know Designs by
D dot com Alpha Man greeting card.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
Unique can make card for the Alpha Fi Alpha Man.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
Who that's me right there? Baby, there, it is all right.
We got eight minutes left. We have eight minutes left.
All right, let's get these questions going.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
I had them ready right here. Here we go. Let
me get it right here. All right.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
What is it that you like about being a you know,
founder of Designs by D, Being an entrepreneur, being a designer,
being an artist.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
You have this all in one and a website. I
could see it. What is it that you like being
an entrepreneur?

Speaker 5 (24:05):
I know we don't have much time, so I'm going
to try to make it. Think encapsulate things. I think
One of my favorite things about being an owner and
an entrepreneur is the fact that I literally get to
do what I love every day.

Speaker 4 (24:21):
You know.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
Unfortunately, the percentage of business owners is not very large, right,
and if everybody could do it, everybody would be doing it.
And so it's an honor to be able to literally
still be doing what I love to do.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
And it's definitely not easy.

Speaker 5 (24:43):
I don't know if anybody ever told anybody that it
was easy being an entrepreneur and an owner, they then
told you a story. Right, It's definitely not easy, but
it's well worth the journey if you're truly passionate about
what you're doing.

Speaker 3 (24:57):
And so I'm truly passionate about what.

Speaker 5 (24:59):
I doing, and I found my calling and I love
being able to connect with other business owners who are going,
you know, on the same journey as me, and it's
just something beautiful. It's again connecting with other like minded
individuals that empower us and make us stronger.

Speaker 3 (25:14):
So that's what I love about being a business owner.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
That's it. That's it. You found your calling. That's so incredible.
That's great to you. And how did you find your calling?

Speaker 2 (25:24):
Is it just something you How did that happen with
fast Did you remember did just something you loved doing?

Speaker 1 (25:29):
You're like, I'm just going to do this for the
rest of my life.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
Well, I've always had that artistic flair about me.

Speaker 5 (25:35):
I've always been creative, and honestly, what happened was I
did have about with my vocal cords right, and the doctors,
the doctor put me on strict vocal rest.

Speaker 3 (25:47):
So I wasn't allowed to per form. I wasn't. It
actually hurt to even hum.

Speaker 5 (25:52):
So I was put on a strict vocal rest for
a little bit of time because my vocal cords were enflamed,
severely unflamed. And of course, you know a lot of
when you're when you're performing a lot, you know that
can put strain on your vocal cords. And so during
that time, I you know, I'm not a person who

(26:12):
just likes to sit around doing nothing or you know,
I always have to be doing something the creative. So
I I just started exploring other creativity, other creative parts
of myself.

Speaker 3 (26:27):
And that's when I discovered that I had a talent.

Speaker 5 (26:29):
I've already always been artistic too, but I didn't really
think I would be doing it in this way and
so having that that downtime and doing the other creative
parts of what I love to do, I really was
able to hone my love for artistry with my hands
and really get into creating.

Speaker 3 (26:53):
And then it just grew from there.

Speaker 5 (26:55):
That little seed was planted and then it you know,
beautiful bloom of flower now.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
Yep, five years in the making, five years in the making,
in twenty five days, ladies and gentlemen, we got four minutes.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
Laft, let's go out the next question.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
We're gonna jump to another subject and then we're gonna
jump up a little off the topic, but not really.
What is the biggest piece of advice another recording artist.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Or musician gave you, what's the best piece of it.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
I'm really trying to think, because I have gotten some
great advice, I would.

Speaker 5 (27:32):
Say, don't worry about messing up. Honestly, that's the thing
that stuck with me the most, because me being an overthinker, right,
I would always be afraid to mess up to the

(27:55):
point where you're sewing your heads sometimes that if you
think you're gonna mess up, you're gonna mess up, right.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
So, and even you know, none of us are perfect,
We're all human.

Speaker 5 (28:06):
We've all, you know, have messed up at a time
or another, and so just embrace the human parts of
ourselves and embrace the beauty of being on stage.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Doing what you love to do, because at the end
of the day, you know, how do you feel doing
what you love to do?

Speaker 5 (28:21):
You know, so when you get all of the the
negative thinking out of your mind of oh, I'm gonna
mess up, Oh what if this happens?

Speaker 1 (28:33):
You know, all of this doom and.

Speaker 5 (28:36):
Stuff that sometimes as humans we naturally do, you're just
going to excel. And there's this saying, there's this quote
that I love. It goes like, now, don't I don't
quote me now, but it basically goes something like what
if I fail? And then the response with but no,

(29:00):
oh my darling, what if you fly? So you know,
we're we can't think about failing. We got to think
about soaring and excelling to the best of our abilities.

Speaker 3 (29:08):
And that's what we're gonna do. Positive thinking breeds positive results.

Speaker 1 (29:12):
Wow, yeah, I have to think.

Speaker 3 (29:14):
About it for a moment, but that that is the
best advice now I think about it. You know, don't
be afraid to don't you know, just be content doing.

Speaker 5 (29:23):
What you love to do, and stay in that moment,
stay in that mind frame of being in the moment
and enjoying yourself, enjoying your life, doing what you're passionate
about as you're on the stage.

Speaker 2 (29:35):
So yeah, all right, enjoy the moment, Enjoy the moment
where you're at right now.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
Don't think about tomorrow, don't think about next week. Enjoy
the moment where you're at right now. All right, that's amazing.

Speaker 3 (29:45):
DS.

Speaker 1 (29:46):
We got three minutes left, so this is what's gonna happen.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
I'm gonna ask you one more question, and then after that,
can you just I'll bring up the flyers, you can
tell them that one more time. And if you hear
music in the background, that's just the closing music. We
got less than three minutes, so here we go. The
last question is like this. It goes like this. I know,
I know, but the people want to know if someone's
going through a tough time right now, what advice would

(30:13):
you give them? And then after that, can you please
tell us about your dead in twenty five days?

Speaker 1 (30:16):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 5 (30:18):
Okay, someone's going through a tough time, I would say,
rely on your faith.

Speaker 3 (30:24):
That is what is going to be the wind beneath.

Speaker 5 (30:27):
Your wings when you feel like you have nothing else
left to give, that is going to be what propels
you into the stratosphere. Really, so rely on your faith
and keep a prayer, be.

Speaker 3 (30:48):
Just be faithful. I think that's the best advice I
can really say, honestly.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
Area, be beautiful, your faithful are right there you go, guys,
