you doing today, Jordan.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
I'm doing well, sir. As always glad to be on
Sports Visits in ninety two point one and get a
chance to talk about these Atlanta is Georgia sport As
you all know, the Hawks are always one of my
favorite times to talk about, so I'm looking forward to
getting into it today, sir.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Indeed, so today we have a special guest. Now at
the start of the beginning of the Atlanta Hawks season
for twenty twenty four, we were able to get the
face of the Atlanta Hawks on fan Duel Hall of
Fame play by play broadcaster Bob Rathman to talk about
the eventual twenty twenty four season in detail. Today we
get to in a halfway point of the season, get
(02:30):
to talk to the voice of the Atlanta Hawks Hall
of Fame play by play broadcaster of the Atlanta Hawks
on ninety two nine the game forty years never missing
a broadcast and going for another forty. By the way,
Steve Homan joins us. How you doing today, Steve?
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Great, Chris, thank you, I'll try for another forty.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
I'm just trying to it in. Also, by the way,
I want to say you are the first guests for
us on Sports Vision's ninety two one FM. So again,
thank you for taking the time out of this afternoon, sir.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
Oh great, Yes, that's right, that's right.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
I come on here every once in a while with
DJ and the guys.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
I appreciate it, appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (03:07):
Thank you, sir.
Speaker 5 (03:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
So that being said, let's go ahead and get into it.
So we have a few questions for you today, Steve.
So my first question today. Trey Young is third in
NBA history and assists per game, third and thirty point
ten assist games in NBA history. He's leading currently the
(03:29):
league and clutch points clutch assists potential assists at twenty
one A game, points generated from assist top three and
total points generated and assists first and assists per game
and total assists. Why is it Trey a perennial All
Star every year? Steve?
Speaker 7 (03:47):
That's a good question because I think, you know, definitely
this year, for sure, he should have made it right away.
There's no reason that he didn't make it, other than
some coaches might be in their feelings a certain way,
you know, over the last several years about Trey. But
there's no reason that he shouldn't have been in there
as a starter. But the great news for him is,
(04:09):
you know, several years from now, people are going to say, well,
he was in his fourth All Star Game. They're not
going to say that he was, you know, a substitute
when somebody got hurt. It'll just go down in history
as how many All Star Games he's had.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
I agree with you completely on that, Jordan. I know
you have a question, sir.
Speaker 6 (04:29):
Yes, sir, Steve Dyson Daniels is putting up Steels numbers
we have not seen since the likes of the great
Michael Jeffrey. Jordan, while also defending opponent's primary score, talk
a little bit about Dison's impact on the team's defense
and what his chances are of making All NBA Defensive
Team First Team.
Speaker 7 (04:49):
Well, I think he's got a great chance at that.
I mean, he leads the league in deflections. He leads
the league in steels by a wide margin too, and
and percentage of steals he's three a game, and you know,
I would think that he would do that. But it's
been fun to watch him all year. I mean, he's
he has really come on. You know, right from the beginning,
he was he was stealing the ball, he was doing
that kind of thing. But his offense has really started
(05:11):
to come on, and I think Quinn has been a
real reason for that. One thing that Quinn does with
all these guys is that he makes sure that they
shoot and don't be afraid to shoot. You know, he's
he's an analytics guy about the threes and the two's,
and you can't argue with three is more than two.
I mean, no matter how he slice it, you know,
(05:31):
three points is better than two points.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
And that's the way Quinn looks at it.
Speaker 7 (05:35):
So he has got all of his guys, you know,
everybody on the floor, you know from vat when he
was out there before he broke us back and everybody.
He's just saying shoot it. Maybe Clint not so much,
but Miguel he'd like to shoot it.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Oh boy. So my second question to you, Steve, do
you believe the Hawks? Now I have a prediction October
two that the Hawks will be six in the East.
Do you believe the Hawks can still finish sixth? With
we now have a shooter in the Aang a defender,
and Man a shot maker, and Kris along with Dyson,
you know, potential defensive player of the year at least
(06:12):
all defense with Okongu, Muhammed Gay Richa Cha steppingo for
the rest of the season, with Trey leading them, do
you feel that they can still finish six and get
out to play in because I myself believe they can
be anybody in a seven game series if they get
the opportunity.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Yeah, I think you're right.
Speaker 7 (06:30):
I think they can and I still think, yes, they
can be sixed again. And you know, thank god they
made the trade.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
That they made.
Speaker 7 (06:37):
I mean, because those guys in Orlando the other night
went down. You know, we lose two more guys, you know,
for four to six weeks, maybe longer, who knows, But
the trade really has been terrific. And you know a
lot of people like to knock Landry and Kyle during
the year, but you know, not doing this or that
or whatever. I think they pulled off a great deal there.
(06:59):
I mean, they you know, DeAndre was having a great year.
DeAndre was probably at the highest value that he was
ever going to be at as a Hawk, you know,
and over the over the years, he's you know, he's
missed a lot of games with injuries, and so I
think they saw an opportunity, you know, not only to
get a player, but they got two players back, plus
they got draft picks that they were able to turn
around and use. So I think to get Terrence Man too,
(07:22):
along with the two guys from Cleveland, Garris Lavert and
and George Dang, you know, I think that's that's all
a bonus, really, and you've got three veteran guys that
can step in. I mean, even the other night against
the Knicks lose by a point and a heartbreaker, I
think the bench scoring was like thirty five to four
at one time. So I think it really bodes well
for the last twenty five to twenty six games.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
That we've got.
Speaker 7 (07:44):
And they are only a couple of games out of six,
then the lost column right now, so I really think that,
you know, I think you're right. I think they can
They can play with anybody right now. And I think
we're going to get Clint back, you know, maybe Thursday
for the game against the Orlando or maybe right after
that sometime soon. I think he's going to be back
into the rotation again, so that'll help. And I really
(08:07):
do I think the I think they feel good about
where they are right now.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
I'm excited. Go ahead, Jordan, Yes, sir.
Speaker 6 (08:14):
Number one overall pick, Zachary rishi Che has become the
first teenager in NBA history to have multiple games with
thirty plus points and zero turnovers. Name speak a little
bit to how you've seen him grow from the beginning
of the season until now.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
Well, it's been amazing to watch him, Jordan, because he's
you know, he started out, I mean, he's nineteen, like
you say, I mean, and to be nineteen and go
into pro basketball is one thing, you know, NBA, But
to come to a whole new country at nineteen, you know,
and have to be thrown into a whole different culture
and just the way everything is.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
He's really adapted so nicely. I run into him a
few times in the hotels, like the.
Speaker 7 (08:54):
In the elevator or you know, in the lobby or whatever,
and he's always like, good morning, sir, Hello sir.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
You know, just a great kid.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
And I mean to think that he's nineteen and doing
the things that he does. I mean, you could tell
when you watch him he knows how to play. I
mean he's been he's been playing with grown men for
the last two or three years in Europe, which you know,
it brings us to you know, why are all the
European players becoming so prominent in the NBA. I think
it's because they play so early. They play at fifteen,
(09:24):
sixteen years old against you know, adult, adult men, and
I think they really learned a lot through that. And
he's been in some big games over there too already.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Absolutely, Thanks again for everyone who's listening to Sports Visions
ninety two to one FM right now as we go
through around the atail of our special guest, Steve Home
in ninety two nine the game in Atlanta, Steve. The
Hawks since nineteen ninety six have only drafted three centers
seven feet or taller Priest Lawerdale, Keith Benson and Eddie Tavares. Okay,
(10:00):
do you think do you think the Atlanta Hawks will
finally get a seven foot plus center with size and
skill for Trade to play with, with a little bit
of a taste of what could be with the little
bit of time that him and Winby were on the
floor because you know, because of the new format, they
only played like three seconds, right, But do you think
Theahawks will ever get to that point where we could
have a seven foot center with the league as it is,
(10:22):
with a lot of seven foot centers out there right now.
Speaker 7 (10:24):
I think they'd love they'd love to have one, I think,
and you know, uh Mo Gay is Gay's pretty good.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
I mean he's got a lot of offense in him too.
Speaker 7 (10:31):
I mean he's he's the guy that you know, Tray
could play play a lot with too. But I think
Resa is gonna be a big part of his, uh
of Trey's future. I thinks is going to be the
beneficiary of a lot of those alley oops and dunks
and uh, I think it's gonna be great to watch
and just to watch Trade the other night that All
Star game with those highlights he did you know he
(10:53):
had the uh he had the nut bag. He had
the he had the whole thing going the other night.
I mean, and I mean they've got to be embarrassed
by not having him in there to begin with, because
he he was probably the biggest part of that show
the other night. I thought, uh, you know the stuff
he did and he was through the he made some
great passes like he's been doing all year.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
I think he had what.
Speaker 7 (11:13):
Age assists or something, and in just the short time
that he was in the game. So I think, yes,
I mean, they they would love to have that seven
foot center that can do that kind of stuff, but
I think a congruo at his size is pretty good too,
as far as you know, playing with Trey and when
when Trey and like I say, when Trey and Resa
sche really start to click, uh, and they're starting to
(11:34):
now you can see that they have. They've really started
to pick up on each other and and and know
what each other is going to do.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
So I think it's going to be a fun time.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
I'm I'm anticipating within the next couple of years we
get that because I'm just looking at the pieces and
before before Jordan goes into his next question, I'm just actually,
you lose into my next question. And so Joey you
go ahead, I'll let you go first.
Speaker 6 (11:58):
Well on a somber No, the change direction is just
a little bit. The great the Kimba and Matumbo is
unfortunately no longer with us, but his legacy certainly lives on.
I have this DK fifty five pen on right here.
Someone gave me that attendant of memorial service. In fact, yeah,
could you just make a little bit to the type
of person the Kimba was and what your relationship was
(12:19):
with the Kimbay?
Speaker 5 (12:21):
Well, he was. He was great.
Speaker 7 (12:22):
I mean he was he was so much fun to
be around when he played and that and even after
he's played, every time he would come, I could hear
him down the hallway. Oh voice, he would yell, voice
down the hallway. I could I'd hear him all the
way down the hall.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (12:34):
But it was and and that memorial service was was
really special. Uh the Friday night, uh you know, the
viewing and then the Saturday that the funeral, it was
it was terrific. I mean, I mean who could bring
out you know, former President Bill Clinton was the lead
speaker at the at the memorial service, and uh, you
know he had people like Cindy McCain speaking there, the
(12:57):
commissioner was there, and I mean it was just was
a who's who of the NBA and Basketball Doctor j
and every everybody turned out. And U that just tells
you a lot about the kembe But what a great,
great guy he was to to be around. And you know,
we all know what a great player he was. And uh,
those those teams that that that he was on with
Mookie and to kem Bay and uh you know it's Smitty. Uh,
(13:21):
those were great teams. And but it was like when
when Dominique played, you know, we kept running into either
the bad Boys of Detroit or we would run into
Larry Bird and Robert Parrish and McHale.
Speaker 5 (13:33):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (13:33):
And then in the later years with with Smitty and
the Kembay and and Mookie, we would run into uh
that guy named Jordan, you know, we'd run into him,
uh in the in the early nineties. So, uh, we
had some great teams there and ed To Kenby was
such a big part of it. And you know he
was really our first big uh free agent signing. You know,
Pete baschar him because they had had a relationship in
(13:56):
Denver and uh, Pete was able to bring him in
here and that was our really big You know, everybody
knows about the Joe Johnson signing being the first big time,
big money, but before that, the kenbe was the big
money signing that we got in what was it ninety
nine or so, right at ninety seven, somewhere in that range.
Speaker 5 (14:14):
You know, I forget a lot of the dates. Now,
it was a while ago.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
We know that, yes, sir, and Steve, you actually kind
of ran into who I was going to mention, because
we've had some instances in Hawk's history where we've had
a move that changed the trajectory of the team a
little bit compared to the other teams that we've had,
compared to the teams that were already out there. So
(14:40):
let me ask you this. I don't know if you
can answer this question, Steve, okay, but from the outside
answer from the outside looking in, and I'm speaking also
as a season ticket holder as well. Right since twenty eighteen,
it doesn't seem like sometimes at the Hawks have made
(15:01):
the effort to build a championship team. And overall since
the eighties, going back to Dominique's teams and all the
way up, we only have two appearances in the Eastern
Conference Finals. What has to happen for a Hawks organization
to show the fans that are supporting them no matter what,
that championship is the main goal, that winning is the
(15:22):
most important thing in that round.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
What do you they've been working to that?
Speaker 7 (15:25):
I mean, and really, you know, Tony has been He's
been big on that that they know he'll be willing
to spend the money when we get to that point.
And I think, you know this year we were close
to that too, but all these injuries have been I've
never seen anything like this with the injuries, not only
that we've had, but other teams around the league. I mean,
look at New Orleans, all of the injuries they've had
(15:45):
all year.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
I mean they have been.
Speaker 7 (15:46):
One thing after another. We've had one thing after another,
and you know, it's just bad luck. I mean, look
at last year the Celtics. They went through virtually unscathed
all year long and they won a championship. I mean,
that's that's part of the key to it. I Mean,
when we played Milwaukee a few years ago in the
Eastern Finals, I think we would have made it to
(16:06):
the finals. You know, if Trade didn't step on that
referees foot. I mean, you know, we were we were
in pretty good control of that series and uh and
and uh be honest, was not one hundred percent. So
I think we could have made it then, but you
know what that is, you know what could have, should
have and all that. But uh, but I think they're
working towards that. I think we're getting right there now.
(16:27):
We've got a young core. I mean, this this team's
young that we have right now and kind of special.
And when you look at every night the way that
the bench is outscoring the other teams, I think we're
as deep as anybody right now.
Speaker 5 (16:39):
And uh and one of.
Speaker 7 (16:40):
The reasons I think DeAndre had the kind of season
that he had with us was that he was coming
off the bench. And you know a lot of guys
love that because they're playing against the second unit of
the other team. So it becomes a lot a lot easier.
I mean, and somebody who's kind of finding that out
right now is on Yeka.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (16:58):
You know, it's it's not it's not quite easy when
you're going up against the starting center. Although you know,
he's had some really big games and he's getting better
every night too. I mean, he's to the point where
they decided they could put him into that starting lineup.
But you know, it's just so much easier when guys
play against the second unit. So that's why our second
unit I think as a pretty big advantage right now.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
And the reason I mentioned that is because we have
the core to really make a push, and I want
to see them finish it out, you know what I'm saying.
That's what That's what I'm looking at long term, because
we've had some pretty good teams, as you mentioned, but
we really didn't finish it out. So that's why I'm
just hoping that we this time, this is going to
be the time we finish it out, right.
Speaker 7 (17:42):
You know, I hate to go back to the eighty
eight again, but you know, if we had won that
Game seven, which we lost by what two points or
something up there in Boston, or if we had won
Game six year, Dominique swears.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
Up and down that we would have won the championship
that year.
Speaker 7 (17:56):
Yeah, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna argue with him
about it either, because I think that that by eighty eight,
you know, the Lakers were.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Kind of on the on the on the down.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
It was right before Detroit started to make their big,
you know, championship push.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
So I think we were right there.
Speaker 7 (18:09):
I think we you know, if we had won that
eighty eight, you know, we won that game five and
then came back if we had.
Speaker 5 (18:15):
Just won the game six.
Speaker 7 (18:16):
But uh, you know, as fate would have it, Cliff
Levingston stepped in front of that ball that was supposed
to go to Dominique and the rest is history.
Speaker 5 (18:24):
We know that left handed shot that went through the lane.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
And Steve I swear well, Steve, I want to say
thank you again for you know, just taking the brief
time out. And as I mentioned, this is our first
interview on our new network, which is Sports Visions ninety
two to one FM, so we appreciate you coming on
board for us. Jordy make sure you let him know
(18:48):
how much we appreciate him as well.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
Thank you so much, Steve. It's always great to talk
to you, sir. For my money, you are the cope
of radio broadcasting Circle.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Speaker 7 (18:59):
It's always great to see guys when you come around
Section one eighteen when I'm you know, broadcasting there and
our other fans that are are coming to the games,
you know, come on by say hello.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
We love to see everybody.
Speaker 6 (19:10):
Yes, sir, I'm just stopping about to see you soon, Steve.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
All right, that's a warning. Thank you, Jordan.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
See oh man, that was that was hold on. That
was our man, Steve Homan, longtime, longtime, longtime friend of
Around the atl and again, thank thank you, thanks so
(19:37):
much for him being on the show on our broadcast
of Sports Visions nine film. That being said, we're going
to try and see if we can pull this off
on a transition note. Let's see if we can do
this real quick here because we have to get to
our second half of the show. So don't go anywhere.
Those listening to on the tune in at one Sports Visions,
(19:59):
this is Around the atl We'll be right back.
Speaker 8 (20:03):
You are listening to Around the at L with Chris
and Jordan. Will be right back with more Atlanta sports talk.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
And we are back.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
What's going on everyone, And this is Chris on Around
the atl on Sports Vision. It's ninety two to one FM.
We just had Steve Homan on the show talking Atlanta
Hawks basketball. Very exciting times this season with Trey Young
being one of the best in the league. We're gonna
find out what we can do this season to get
into the playoffs and see we can make a run
of the Eastern Conference finals. So that being said, Jordan,
(21:06):
let's talk some College Park Skyhawks real quick, go ahead.
Speaker 6 (21:11):
All right? Sports. First of all, I listened to Sports
Visits ninety two point one FM. As far as the
College Park scott Skyhawks go, they've had a very good season.
We've seen one of our second round draft picks, Nicola Drisic,
really come on here lately with the College Park Skyhawks,
(21:35):
and he's hit career highs recently in scoring as well
as assists, and he's really showing that he could be
a potential contributer for the Hawks in the near future.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
Sir, all right, So let's talk to Atlanta I for
a moment and with the vibe. Last week, they had
some tough losses, but they had a big five set win,
this time over the Indie Ignite three to two. Leah
Emmon again shows why she is. She was the last
(22:07):
year's MVP, leading the team with twenty nine points. She
also had two aces. But I also want to mention
Morgan Hints, who had twenty two digs and five assists
on her own showing why she is one of the
four ladies name to the All Star Match that I
mentioned last week. Currently, they're six and five and in
fourth place, and if you haven't been to a game
still make sure you get tickets at Gas South Arena
(22:28):
on the Atlanta Vibe website, and also don't forget you
could watch all their games on the Pro Volleyball Federation
YouTube page Real pro VB. Clumbus River Dragons. They lost
not too long ago to the Athens Rock Lobsters, but
they've gone to and one since then. They actually had
a home and home against the Binghamton Bears. They won
three to one and four to one. They're having a
(22:50):
great season so far, nineteen and ten and third in
their conference. So make sure you get to the Columbus
Civic Center website for the Columbus River Dragons and get
your tickets as well. I do have a quick announcement
to see if I got time. I do so. Columbus
Storm is in Columbus, Georgia, and they're a semi pro
football team. They've been playing for five seasons, but last year,
(23:13):
guess what, they won their conference and the national championship
for the first time. So this year they're looking to
the finn Their first game is gonna be February twenty
second at Garrett Harrison Stadium. Tickets are twelve dollars in
Kids ten and under are free. So if you live
in Columbus Phoenix City, or even if you're in Atlanta
you want a little football, you need to drive down
(23:34):
and watch the Columbus Storm play this season. Oh by
the way, also announcement, y'all know what this is. I
can't play the sounder right now, but we'll do it
next week. Braves season has started, guys. The Braves baseball
is back. They're finally getting to play some spring training games.
Their first one, I believe is Saturday Jordan against the
Minnesota Twins, and then right after that they played Tampa
(23:56):
Bay Rays. So it's exciting to get back to talking
Braves again. The coun is back, the whole game is back.
I've seen some Kendrick Lamar videos with the guys lately.
That's pretty cool, So excited for them. Next up, let's
talk some high school basketball. Actually, Joey, you want to
start with on the Atlanta side.
Speaker 6 (24:15):
Of things, Yes, Sir Lanier Gournett County beat Number one
