Let's go ahead and bring in our co host for
today's show, longtime Atlanta sports fan and sports writer who
is always in and about Atlanta at any given time,
with the day, Jordan Jackson. How are you today, sir?
Speaker 4 (01:50):
What's going on? Sir?
Speaker 5 (01:51):
Me as always is bring to talk to the people
on Sports Visits ninety two point one FM, because of course,
you know we are the people show. We've got a
lot going on in the a lot of sports, everything
from you know, Hawks to Ignite into just you know,
all around the sports spectrum in Atlanta sports, Georgia sports,
including a local teams.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
But that being said, sir, let's talk about it.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Well, that's a great segue as we're talking about our
local teams. You know, we have a golf league that
we're involved with in Atlanta. Jordan, tell us a little
about a little bit about the TGL.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
The TGL is an interesting golf league because it combines
kind of virtual reality technology with actual golfing so basically
the competitors are choosing an iron and doing like a drive.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Into a screen.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
But then once you get to the green part of
the whole, they actually have these greens that kind of
can shift that they can change the shape of them
to mimic different holes, and so you're actually putting onto
that surface in order for your short game with golf.
With that being saying, we have the Atlanta Drive here
(03:07):
in a lot of representing Atlanta for the TGL and
an MB. Most recent matchup, they defeated Boston sixty three
that clinched the playoff spot.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
They're currently third in the standings, but.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
I think that they're feeling about some kind of tie
breaker because they have the same amount of points as
the number two team in the standings.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
And just to let you guys know, the Atlanta team
is made up of.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
Justin Thomas, Patrick Canton, Lane, Lucas Glover, and Billy Horschell.
That is the Atlanta Drive Golf Club's roster.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Sert that that is really cool. I think I can't remember.
It might have been Patrick or one of the other
guys had the Dominique jersey yard. I saw Matt Ryan
at a match not too long ago. That's pretty cool, Jordan,
what a cool thing about it.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
Also, if you're watching it on TV, let me get
to hear the interaction between the conference.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
You hear him talk trash after a good shot.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
They may hit a little dance sot a lot more
informal with the TTL than they would be on a
Sunday at Augusta, for example.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
It's pretty cool, pretty cool, Jordan. Go ahead and catch
us up on the College Park Skyhawks for us if
you could, by yes, sir.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
The College Park Skyhawks most recently lost their last game
ninety six to one nineteen against the Salt Lake City Stars.
The Skyhouse were led by Tony Bradley's twenty eight points
and thirteen rebounds. Also, we'd like to look in on
Nicola Durasi, our second round pick from this past season.
(04:45):
He had twelve points and four assists, but he struggled
with the shooting, shooting only three of the eleven from
the floor and who of three on his threes and
also dey Kin plowd and lose a two way contract
guy with the Hawks, he had nine points. He also
struggled with this shot as well, three or twelve from
the floor.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Oh, of seven on his threees.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
The loss dropped Atlanta to twelve wins eight losses, which
is fourth in the East in the ABHU Sir.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
All right, well, they're still in it. The Atlanta Vibe
are on the two game losing streak currently. They lost
their most recent to the Indie Ignite three to one
and most recently also to the Columbus Fury three to nothing,
so they're on the two game losing streak. Against the Ignite,
Lea Emmon led the team with sixteen points and Molly
(05:34):
Monserez had thirty five assists. Against the Fury, Lea again
led the team with sixteen points and then Mia Tuaniga
led the team with thirty four assists. So hopefully they
snapped that streak pretty soon against the Orlando Valkyries, which
they play on March first. So remember you can watch
all of their matches on the real pro VB YouTube
(05:55):
page to watch and support the girls. Columbus River Dragon
now the River Dragons were recently. They recently swept a
home and home with the Blue Ridge Bobcats three to
one and four to one. Then they lost to the
Athens Rock lots Or six to one. Then they went
and beat them Monroe Moccinsons five to two to go
(06:15):
to and one in their last three. One thing about
the River Dragons, they can score some goals on anybody.
So they're a very exciting team, which is why you
need to go and support them at the Columbus Civic
Center every week when you can. They're twenty to eleven
so far and third in their conference. They have two
players with eighteen goals and one with nineteen goals this season.
Just to let you know how much they scored for
(06:37):
the Columbus Storm, I forgot to do the River Dragons
right there. Columbus Storm won their first game of the
season nineteen to thirteen against the Force, so they started
their season one and zero as they look to defend
their championship from a year ago. I have reached out
to them to see if I can get some details.
It's kind of I had to try to look for
some details. I couldn't find any, so I reached out
(06:58):
to the team personally. So hopeful they can catch me
up really soon. Jordan, We've got a lot of basketball
to talk about today. Can you start us off with
some HBCU talk.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Sir, Yes, sir. Most recently in HBCU men's basketball. Morehouse
defeated Clark.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Eighty five to seventy nine and double overtime, but then
they went on to beat Allen eighty three to fifty one.
That's three straight wins for the Moorhouse Tigers and that
runs the record up to sixteen and twelve. Third in
SIAC East. Clark is now seventeen and nine first, and
(07:40):
it's IAC East Aby the state ninety two. Fort Valley
State ninety five ab of the state. After losing that game,
turned around and beat Edward Waters ninety six to eighty nine.
Their record is now seventeen to ten second in the
SIAC East. Yeah, Fort Valley State fifty two, so that
state sixty eight. That dropped Fort Valley's record to eleven
(08:04):
to sixteen. Sixty a seas, y'all say, had Savannah State
beating that were Water sixty six to forty four. That
ran Savannah States record to thirteen and eleven, number five
in the size ACE Eastern.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
All right, And continuing some college basketball in Georgia UGA,
they gave it a shot against the number one Aarburn Tigers,
but they fell short eighty two seventy ASA Dwell had
twenty Solas Damari at eighteen, but Johnny Broome of Auburn
was too much thirty one and fourteen. He was killing them. Now.
Despite this being their fourth loss in a row and
(08:42):
looking like they had no momentum going into the eventual
SEC tournament, guess what just happened. They just beat third
ranked Florida eighty eight to eighty three in a close one.
So that's pretty big. So they got a little bit
going on from so don't count them out just yet.
Some more college basketball. Columbus State University basketb ball the
men's team the Cougars of Columbus State and Columbus Georgia
(09:03):
are twenty three and three so far, fourteen and two
in the conference with a seven game win streaks. Recently,
they beat Lander University seventy five sixty seven at the
Frank G. Lumpkin Center in Columbus, Georgia. Jared Adderton had
twenty one and Jordan Mitchell off the bench at seventeen.
They have a very well balanced team right now, and
they look to wrap up the regular season March second
(09:25):
against Georgia College. Y'all need to go and support them.
The ladies, of course, are also doing well. They're eighteen
and seven twelve and four in the conference respectively, with
their most recent win also against Lander University ninety seven
to fifty seven. They destroyed them. Latia Reeves had twenty
one and Olanda Rawls had eighteen to lead the team.
(09:46):
They also finished the season at home on March second
against Georgia College. They play at one right before the guys,
so make sure you go support so that gets us
into some high school basketball, Jordan, what's going on in
at lond so far? Sir?
Speaker 5 (10:02):
A lot of a lot of team's still alive in
the state playoffs SIR. Six eight Round two Grayson b
Meadow Creek seventy sixty, thirty eight, Northcrols sixty three, MCKEITCHRM sixty,
Walton sixty.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Six, West Lake sixty and five.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Ay Round two you had Woodworth fifty eight, Milton fifty
six and a squeaker. You had Lexton Hughes eighty one,
the Near fifty three, Lee County sixty nine, Rome fifty
two and tried Citties eighty nine, spray Bury seventy one.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
For a round two, you got Union Grove seventy eight.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
They're out of McDonough sat Fires fifty fifty nine, Pace
Academy eighty Till fifty, Tucker sixty two, east Ford Sit
fifty nine, Jonesborough eighty five, Aybury sixty nine, Westminster sixty five,
Midtown fifty two, McDonald's seventy eight, Southwestern Cabs seventy, May
(10:59):
seventy four, Alacuna thirty four, North Old Cony seventy nine.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Marriage sixty one.
Speaker 5 (11:06):
Real quickly in three eighty three to eight year round
two scores with Sandy Creek sixty west Over forty seven.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
What was it? Far As seventy three, Douglas.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
High School sixty nine, Peter Grove sixty eight, Lleuella sixty
and Dordy sixty four, Calhoun fifty seventh.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Certain, all right. In the Columbus Georgia area we have
we only had a few teams to make it to
the two A round for the guys. Carver beat Rutland
seventy one to thirty three, Chris County beat Shaw seventy
two forty so they're out. Spencer beat Thurrell sixty two
to fifty four, and Kendrick gets beat by South Atlanta
sixty six forty seven. Then that very next week Carver
(11:45):
beats Burke County seventy five fifty four. Spencer in the
close one beats Chris County fifty one forty nine. So
those are the only two schools that advance to the
quarterfowos out of Columbus for the guys. They play again
on the twenty six. For the Lady. The Lady, Carver
Tigers beat Carver of Atlanta seventy two thirty eight. Hardaway
(12:06):
beats Jackson sixty seventy six twenty two. Sorry. Next round,
Hardaway beat Franklin County eighty one to twenty two, and
then Carver squeeze out of win forty three to thirty
eight to advance for the ladies. So this week Hardaway
will play Columbia and Carver will play Morgan County and
hopefully we'll see one of our Columbus teams make it
(12:27):
to the final four. So that's the first half of
the show so far. Everyone, Hopefully you're enjoying around the
atl on Sports Visions ninety two to one FM. As
we take a quick break, we're gonna get to talk
about the Atlanta Braids as spring training has started. We're
going to talk some Atlanta Hawks basketball, even a little
bit of Atlanta United, so don't go anywhere as we
(12:47):
get ready to do our second half of Around the
atl on Sports Visions ninety two to one. F you
are listening to Around the atl with Chris and Jordan,
will be right back with more Atlanta sports talk, and
(13:45):
we are back on Around the at l on Sports
Visions ninety two one film. Nice little break on geeked
up there representing atl of course, So guess what we're
finally We're finally, finally, finally here. Didn't think we were
gonna get to this point somehow. Spring training is here, folks,
the Atlanta Braves baseball team. They're playing baseball again. It's
(14:08):
very exciting time, obviously, been waiting for all these months
to get back to it. So far, they've played two games.
They lost to the Twins three to one. Chris Sale
did pitch two scoreless innings. Then they lost to the
Tampa Bay Rays four to two, where Ian Anderson and
one in the two thirds innings, gave up three walks
a hit run right off the bat. Anyway, next games
(14:31):
will be against the Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirate.
So here's some of the questions coming into this season.
The loss of Max Free? How much is that gonna
hurt the Braves long term? A Kuna? Will he come
back to MVP form or a form that he will
be able to at least produce and help the team
this year? All right? Who steps up in place of
(14:52):
Max Free? Can we go the whole season without any
major injuries? Will the shortstop position be an issue? Still?
If the Braves solved left field? Can Chris Selle have
a similar season to last year? Will Raleigh and Issley
have great years this year? Will this a big year?
Be a big year for money Mike Mike Harris? Can
(15:13):
Ozuna duplicate his year from last year? Will Spencer Strider
returned to a dominant form? And what will Profar bringing
to the table? So Jordan, so far, what are your thoughts?
You know, spring training you can kind of brain the
salt sort of speed. But where are you looking forward
to as far as the Braves this season?
Speaker 5 (15:32):
Well, one of the big things that I want to
see is and Jerkson Profar repeat his season from last
year which he hit two with twenty four home runs
one hundred and fifty eight hits. That was by far
the best year of his career and apparently that a
lot of Braves think that he figured something out last year.
(15:53):
That's why they were willing to pay him to come here,
and they're betting that he can continue his play last season.
If he can, that's gonna be big because he could
be in the outfield along with Ronald Lacuna and Michael
Harris when of Cunya gets back in the lineup. But
also on games where you may start, Jared Kelvick so
(16:17):
far has the ability to play some second basis short
stop in the pinch, so he can also be.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
You know, a guy you can move around some.
Speaker 5 (16:25):
Switches with things of that nature, get the batchups you
want later in ball games. The other key for the
Braves and some of what you mentioned is the injured
guys returning to form. How good is Ronald Lacuna after
coming back from injury, that's gonna be big. We're gonna
need Matt Olsen to have a bounce back year. He
(16:45):
hit only twenty nine home runs last year after hitting
over fifty the previous year. Also, Austin Riley is gonna
be key, another one of your key you.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
Know RBI guys.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
He only hit nineteen home runs last year after hitting
over thirty the year before that, and so yeah, that's
gonna be the major key is the bounce back of
the previous guys alsie Aloby's as well, who was injured
quite a bit last year and only hit ten home runs.
We know he's typically you know, close to thirty. Also
(17:20):
with the picture staff.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
The same thing.
Speaker 5 (17:22):
Special Strata is gonna absolutely be the key. We really
need him to return to the form of an ace
if we're gonna be all that we can be, especially
being that we didn't really pick up another front line
type guy and lost backs free and lost probably Morton
who you know, it wasn't quite the same player as
he used to be, but still it's quite a few
(17:44):
inning sport us.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
So those are the things I'm looking for.
Speaker 5 (17:48):
And one of my big concerns is the lack of
depth with the starting pitching, depending on the guy like
Grant Holmes to be able to start full time, and
if he's not ready to go or something happens behaved,
then you're depending on Ian Anderson step into the lineup.
And I hate to say it, sir, but we're probably
only two disabled list stints away.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
From Bryce Elders starting games for Brads once.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Again, Sir sees. Oh okay, so I gotta go right
past that real quick because I was about to say
something so possible. Pitching starters until Strata return, Sell Lopez, Schrillingbach,
Grant Holmes, possibly Ian Anderson as the fifth are starting
line up in regards to hitters until a Kuna gets
(18:35):
back Harris Profile, Riley Olsen, Ozuna, Isley, Murphy, kalinnek Rcia.
One last question be brief. Can this team win the
World Series? Jordan?
Speaker 5 (18:48):
I think they absolutely can because they're a talented team. Now,
they're absolutely Some great teams in Major League Baseball, particularly
in the National League, include the Phillies in the Metro,
great rosters in your own division. So I think they can.
But will they There's another question this yet to be answer, sir.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
And we got a long season of top baseball, so
we'll come back again with another segment next week. For sure,
we're gonna get in some Atlanta United. We've been kind
of missing out on in the last couple of weeks,
so we're gonna catch up right now. Atlanta United. They
won their last match three to two. The newest member
of the Five Stripes, Latte loth had two goals and
(19:29):
Mascarra had a goal as well. Currently, they're off to
a great, great start there in the conference, and there's
a real buzz again in Mercedes Benz, especially with mcgwell
coming back, having a new manager and everything. So I'm
really excited about the Atlanta United as a as a
team this year. So as we get ready to finish
(19:49):
up the show, we got one more segment to talk
and that is the Atlanta Hawks. The Atlanta Hawks. You know,
for the Hawks to win. If you've seen any previous
episodes of the show, you know I've said for us
it still may be finished.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
Six.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
We need z R Zachary Richard se to be Rookie
of the Year. Can't have any more. You know, made
three Maine shots for the whole game, top of a game,
right or Okanu has to be consistent. Yang has to
be starting so he can get the majority of the shot.
Says he's our best shooter. Now. Basically, Harris and Man
have to deliver each night. Mohammed Gay has to be consistent.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
Right.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
We know, we know what Trey and Dyson are going
to do for the most part, but then sometimes Dyson
has those games where he's a little inconsistent from the
shot perspective. Right, The Hawks lost the first two games
of the second half of the season by six points
to the Orlando Magic at home one fourteen to one
oh eight, game we really needed to win. Then we
lost to the Pistons at home one eight to one
(20:45):
forty three. But then recently the Hawks beat the Miami
Heat ninety eight to a six only gave up a
six points.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
Right.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Interesting, No, Trey Young for the month of February is
averaging thirty points and eleven point nine assists a game.
Nobody in the NBA is doing that. Right's first, and
assists first, and assists per game, clutch assists, clutch points
particular assists at twenty one a game. People are still
missing shots. Unfortunately, Trey Young is in his last four
games thirty eight points, nineteen assists, thirty eight points, six assists,
(21:14):
thirty eight points and thirteen assists, and then the most
recent game eleven points fourteen assists. Yet it was this
Miami game that you have people out there saying, well,
he went fourth to fourteen from the floor. Trey is
a consistent People are saying that right now seriously, and
they're trying to blame Trey again four losses again after
I just told you what I just told you, right,
(21:35):
But they're not saying that in regards to certain players
who are four or fifteen from the floor or one
of eight or five or twelve or four for thirteen
or three or fifteen or five for twelve in the
last four to seven games though, right, So why is that?
And now Orlando lost alone? The Hawks left ten points
on the board in the fourth quarter. Off it passes
(21:55):
from Trey Young as Tray had fifteen points in the
fourth quarter himself. Right, And this is bringing barn up
again because it's foolish to continue to try to blame
Trey Young and Trey Young alone for losses that we're
incurring right now on a week two week basis. So again,
I'm gonna show this in the future as far as
some game reviews. But Jordan, can the Hawks win seven
(22:16):
in a row out of nowhere and formally get back
into this race to get to the sixth spot or
refacing another playing situation, and if so, can we win
the play in.
Speaker 5 (22:27):
Listen to the sports Radio ninety two point one sports
Visions around.
Speaker 4 (22:31):
The atl.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
Well.
Speaker 5 (22:34):
First of all, everybody who is blaming Trey Young with
that last game is absolutely out of their minds. There
a lot of Hawks who are plus twenty six with
Trey Young on the floor. The next closest guy was
a deck of Hong Kong at plus ten, So clearly
that tells you the Hawks were very bad when Trey
(22:55):
was not on the floor in that win over Miami.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
Unfortunately, Sir, I hate to replay work, but.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
I think the race to get back to the sixth
seed is done. The Detroit Fistons have won seven games
in a row and then win over US, including and
also winning since then has given them a five game
lead over US plus the tiebreakers, so basically the six
game lead with twenty four games left. I think that's
(23:20):
probably gonna be too much to overcome.
Speaker 4 (23:22):
Unfortunately, I think the shift.
Speaker 5 (23:25):
Now has to the focus now has to shift to
ensuring that you're either the seventh seed or the eight seed.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
You don't want to be.
Speaker 5 (23:33):
Ninth or tenth and have to face Chicago again in
a winner go home game like last year, and so
you know, if you are seven or eight and you win,
you move on to the seventh seed. But if you
don't win, you at least get another shot to get
(23:54):
the A seed by playing against the winner of.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
The nine ten game. So this imperative that we finished
seven or eight. We do not want to be ninth
to tenth, Sir.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
I agree with all of that completely, except I still
have in the back of my mind somehow they're gonna
finish six because I predicted that October second. I need
them to finish sixth place.
Speaker 5 (24:13):
And well, look, if Jalen Johnson didn't go down, I'm
confident that your prediction would have a de been correct, Sir.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
Yeah. In that Miami win Man had fifteen points, Krislover
had fifteen, and Yang had eleven off the bench, those
three have to basically have double digits the rest of
the season. Mohammad Gaye for his fifteen minutes played, he
has to get at least ten points a game. O'conon grew.
Of course, he needs to be able to give us
fourteen to seventeen a game, plus his defense Dice in
(24:43):
at least ten plus a game, plus his defense rebounds.
Of course, his steals. He had seven steals against Miami.
But the biggest factor again is Zach. Two points isn't
enough in twenty six minutes. I know he's a rookie,
but again he's the number he's the number one pick
of the NBA draft, and we him do it right
and right now. We need as much as we can
(25:04):
get out of him in that start and roll to
accommodate the rest of the starting lineup and Trey Young,
because if Trey Young danes have a bad shooting night
like he did have in that Miami game, but he
still had fourteen assists, He had three boys and a block.
By the way, we only gave up by the way,
I wanted to mention this real quick before we get
out of here. The Hawks only one of the reasons
(25:25):
we've beat Miami. We only gave up seven fast break
points and only gave up thirty eight points in the paint.
The Heat only hit seventeen point five percent from three.
So again, I always talk about points in the paint,
second chance points, and fast break points and three point
percentage as some of the reasons the Hawks lose a
lot of games. So we saw that change in this
(25:47):
Miami Heat game and we won that game. So again,
I just I just hope that the Hawks, you know,
can get back on it. We know we're still missing
two players too. We're still two players down it and
Larry Nance that's a will like now your now's gonna
be able to make it back. That might be able
to at the very end of the season. I just
want to see the Hawks compete, and I really want
(26:08):
to see the Hawks in the playoffs this year, and
I think they can do it. We're gonna find out eventually.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
Though.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
That being said, folks, again is a great night is
very fun. Trying to fit all these go ahead.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
Jordan quick shut out to Dyce and Daniels, who has
seven skills.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
In that last game over Miami that he.
Speaker 5 (26:30):
Now has the two of the longest fan five game
spans and steals basically the most steals in five game
spans since two thousand. He had a five game span
we had twenty nine steals earlier in the season and
he now has twenty three steals over his last five
(26:50):
games currently, with which, like I said, it's two of
the top ten five game spans since the year two
thousand and he's the greatest steels numbers we've seen since
Michael Jordan.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
He absolutely should be different because of Player of the Year, sir.
Speaker 5 (27:06):
One last thing you have him a great point when
you talked about Terris Man and Karris Lavert. I think
their production is key to the Hawks winning.
Speaker 4 (27:14):
Games going forward.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
