Let's go ahead and bring in our co host for tonight,
Always around Atlanta, Jordan Jackson.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
How are you tonight man? What's going on? Sam? Doing well?
Speaker 5 (02:16):
Just keeping up with all of the happenings going on
around Atlanta. Sports both you know, end.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Game and all in off the fields and courts as well.
And so with that being said, sir, let's talk about
the Lttle East Georgia sports.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
Well, it is twenty twenty five season for all of
Major League Baseball. The Brave season has begun and it's
not been fun so far. And that being said, I
want to go ahead and bring in our special guests
for the night since the season has officially gotten started.
He's someone I've known for a little bit now and
(02:51):
he is going to be our resident Braves correspondent for
the season. His name is Blake Newsome. Let's see if
he's ready to go here. Blake, how you doing? Serve
the thumbs up? Thank you, sir? How you doing?
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Man? Hi? You guys doing this evening. It's an honor
to be on the program.
Speaker 6 (03:08):
I'm currently watching Game six of the season as we
record versus the Los Angeles Dodgers right now, hoping our
brothers can finally get their first win of the season.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
And can we get a score up? Can we get
a score update on that? Blake? Please service?
Speaker 6 (03:21):
Atlanta is holding to a one to nothing lead in
the bottom of the fourth inning. Is Chris s al
Is working with a two to two count to Key
k Hernandez training sentence fifth.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
So here's our season so far. Everybody profar suspended eighty games,
Austin Riley hitting one eleven, Matt Olsen hitting one forty three,
Marcelo Zoo They hitting one sixty seven, Michael Howard hitting
one p fifty eight, Ozzie hitting one sixty seven, Drake
hitting o sixty seven, Jared one seventy six on Orlando
(03:52):
Rcia one fifty four. So the easy question could be
for some fans, why isn't AA or snit on the
hot seat? You know, are Braves fans really supposed to
be happy and settle for this after last season and
the season before that? Pitching wise, you know, why is
it okay for decisions where bad pitchers keep being allowed
(04:13):
to be on the team and then get in the
games on top of that right at the worst times ever?
So right now to both of you, Blake and Jordan,
Jordan and Blake, what do you think so far of
this season? I know everybody says early in the season,
but at certain point is it really.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Well, it is end of.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
The season because you have a one hundred and sixty two games,
But you don't want to dig yourself a big hole
out of the king.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
You certainly don't want to do that. Now.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
Granted, two series against the Padres and the Dodgers on
the West coast on the road to open up is
a very difficult start, especially when you back then you
don't have Ronald Kuna yet, you don't have Special Strider yet.
But that being said, sir, there's still some you know,
things that have taken place that have.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Quite confused me.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
One thing, but that being the fact that Hector Nerris
was brought in in a high leverage situation in the
first game of the season with a league and propertly
gave up three runs, got nobody out, had an e
al of infinity after that.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
After that game, and then.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
The next time he came in the pitch was also
a pretty high livered situation. I think we were just
down a runner two and he comes in and propertly
gives up two more runs. This time he does gets
three outs and he launches e already from the infinity
to forty five. Okay, So that's just one h saut
for a little some of the things that have confused me,
(05:45):
and that's Bullpenn, bull pen management.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
Black your thoughts, sir, well.
Speaker 6 (05:50):
To speak on Hector and a Reese, Uh, he's a
player that hasn't had a good career for most of it,
not to say he's a he's a bad baseball player.
By he means he's in the major leagues. Everyone that
gets their stellar athlete. But speaking on his major league career,
he was a failed closer for the Phillies for many years.
A big reason that they didn't get over the hump
until a couple of years ago because they had to get.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Him out of their bullpen.
Speaker 6 (06:10):
Had a couple decent years and the astro set up
bullpen was a big reason that they did win the
twenty twenty two World Series coming back after Atlanta defeeded
him in twenty twenty one. Other than that, he's not
really been a great reliever and there was a reason
that he was available Jordan at mid March of this
spring training window, and so for him to be in
a high lever situation for Atlanta is just a lack
(06:30):
of moves made this offseason, which is embarrassing. I'm sure
Alex and Thoppolis tried to do a little bit more
than he wanted to. Obviously, he's hand tied to Derek
Shiller and Terry mcgirky in parts of Liberty Media, being
that the Atlanta Braids don't have an actual ownership group
like Arthur Blank and twenty wrestler I am not a
big gallaxing Doppolins fan as I was a couple of
years ago. I think he's let a lot of talent
(06:50):
walk out the door, and it has downgraded the roster.
For example, Freddy Freeman and Matt Olsen William contrast to
Sean Murphy your one edition.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
You got obviously this off season to.
Speaker 6 (06:59):
Finally fill a five year old and left field, and
Jerkson Profar, who I do think is a decent ballplayer,
gets popped for steroids and so not a lot of
great looks around the roster. Danzy Swanson to Orlando Arcia
was also a downgrade. Speaking on what we had on
the World Series team. You've lost a lot of leaders.
Jesse Chavis, who just came back pitched one game against DFA,
was a big leader in your clubhouse.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Over the years.
Speaker 6 (07:21):
Charlie Morton, fair If Young Senior and Ron Washington are
no longer on this coaching staff, and Travis Darnaut is
no longer in the locker room, and so all of
these pieces pile up in the bullpens, specifically not having
joe Yumenez for most of the season and also losing
aj Minterer to a very fairly Chrice deal to the
New York Mets is going to cost Atlanta.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
He was not a closer.
Speaker 6 (07:42):
We understood that, but the dude broke the franchise record
for holds. He was the most elite set up man
Atlanta had in years, and for that price that Atlanta
should have brought him back. Now with the Ronaldo Lopez
news bringing Bryce Alder back into our major league lives,
he is going to be out for half the season.
And Chris, if you know me, I've been on the
record for years. I love the signing when we got here,
(08:04):
but he is a reliever. Atlanta is trying to stretch
him out as a starter, and it just cost him
half a season for this this squad that just started
a week ago, because the dude keeps getting shoulder information,
embarrassing to the brave front office, embarrassing to Brian Sinford
that he's still the manager in twenty twenty five, still
one hundred and fifty seven games to go. But I'm
not expecting it to turn around because it's a continuation.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Of last year and that and that actually goes to
my point. I want to say thank to both of
y'all because I do have a little bit of a
health issue that you know, my voice is not where
it needs to be. But just the fact, just the
fact of what you just said there in regards to
here we are now in twenty twenty five and needs,
needs that we obviously had were not addressed and now
(08:48):
they're all coming into a head. And my partner, Jordan,
you know, he mentioned Bryce Elder all off season and
here we are facing it. We're all running and it
just you know, it gives me the aist, you know,
and it's like, is it a joke? That's why I
said that at the very beginning of the show. Is
this a joke for them? Because they're demanding that us
(09:10):
as Braves fans pay for all this? You see what
I'm saying. They want a full stadium and a full battery, right,
but this is what we got right now, non competitive
baseball on all levels. And it's I think I saw
an article there was a clip from I think it
was Harris we just have to move on, And I'm like, so, Blake,
(09:35):
you basically said you just don't think it's gonna get better. Jordan,
do you think that there could be any anything positive
coming around the corner, so to speak, around the bend.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
I think it's gonna get better than it is right now.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
Just first of all, I do think we still, despite
all of us just mentioned, have more talent than quite
a few bits of league teams. So we'll win some
games just off of that alone. Plus, I do think.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Konya will be back. I don't know. I don't think
he'll be back to you know, his MVP form.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
But I think he should have his return a little
bit better than he did the first time.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Coming back from injury.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
At least that's me being hopeful and also a special
Striden looked.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
Very good in his spring training outing that.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
He did pitch, so I respect the big things from
him when he comes back. Now, you know, Granny Blake
hit on a lot of great points, and one of
the big things he hit on was leadership. We have
let a lot of leaders walk out the door, most
recently being missus Travis Dardo. The other thing you talk
about Hector Darry is being put in, you know, a
(10:38):
high level situation.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
He only had three outings in spring training.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
And then to touch on the dance the Swanson thing,
like I kind of agree with the Braves not paying
dance be Swanson.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
That much money, But none of a million years did.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
I think we would be going in the year three
over on level sea us just starting shortstop. I thought that,
you know, he may go for a year and then
eventually we move on to replace him with you know,
a better back at shortstop, a better player in shortstop.
I was hoping that we made a play for Willie.
You dumba is this's all season?
Speaker 3 (11:18):
But obviously it's it's a reckless that was reckless three years.
When you hear it out loud, that's what makes it
just absurd, right, So Blake, as we get ready to
kind of close out this segment, and again, thanks you,
thanks for coming on to the show, give us, give
us a little bit of what's going to be happening
(11:40):
this season with yourself and Braves talk.
Speaker 6 (11:45):
Well, I do agree with with Jordan to the degree
that I don't expect the Braves to go winless. I
do think things will get better, but I'm not expecting
a division title for this team this year. And a
lot of it comes back to the Phillies and Mets
organizationally have gotten a lot better the last couple of years.
The Braves can't get on them messing up on what
they do in the offseason to keep controlling the division.
(12:05):
So I definitely think Atlanta will still stand in the
wildcard race more than likely have a winning season, but
I don't think it's gonna be the same from what
you saw the last six summers into a last season
of them winning ninety five to one hundred games, losing
three hundred innings in the starting rotation between Charlie Morton
Max Reed gonna be tough. Sean Murphy's already on the shelf.
So I do think things will turn around and be
(12:25):
a I think they'll have a winning record, but I
don't think it's gonna be this summer of bombs away
in Atlanta, GA like it's been, because as the season
starts midway through this game, we are one of thirty
one with runners in scoring position to start this year.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
But was it twenty seven straight in as we went without.
Speaker 6 (12:41):
A round twenty seven tire ball games.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
And we got a new hitting hoach.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Right, And just to being back on one more thing
you talked about, you talked about going.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
From contreillers to Sean Murcy.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
That's something I've I am you know, in the midst
of for quite some time, and I think you know
it has some stuff.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
It was some of the more veteran pitchers at.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
The time not being comfortable with count Streiers dying to play.
But both of those pitches are club now, and you
replaced the young All Star caliber bat with a guy
who's one had trouble stay healthy and didn't hit the
ball well when.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
He was healthy last year. So it's just a shames Blake.
I appreciate you. I appreciate you joining us tonight. Tell
everybody where they can find you at on the internet.
Speaker 6 (13:26):
Sir well, I would love to come back and further
discuss the win contraras thing this summer on the next
time I'm on your program, because I would love to
give that an answer for Jordan. Where you guys can hear
me talk about that a lot more frequently is on
x for Twitter at newsome anew soom sports ato and
talk braves falcons at Hawks, mostly braves over there, and
(13:46):
I love to do braves postgame spaces and emergency reaction
spaces on Twitter. Just yesterday afternoon we had a three
hour space regarding the Jerks and profar suspension news.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
But love with you guys.
Speaker 6 (13:57):
Do you ever hear it around the atl love to
be on your in the near future to continue talking
about these subjects as the ball club improves, and Jordan,
we can further discuss the way of Conturier's things this summer,
even though I have high hopes for Drake Baldwin. Thank
you guys so much, and I hope to talk to y'alli.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Absolutely, Thanks Waite, appreciating man. See, so that was a
great cliffhanger. We left Blake all right, excellent, excellent time.
So that being said, let's go ahead and swing into
the Hawks. Now we have to do this segment pretty brief, Joiners,
go ahead and throw it out to your on live
radio here on Sports Visions ninety two to one FM.
(14:32):
At the moment of our broadcast, the Hawks were four
games behind the Bucks for the sixth spot, five games
behind the Pistons for the fifth spot. Hawks have a
one game lead on the division. At the time of
this show, Hawks will have twenty seven conference wins, seventeen
wins against teams five hundred are better. Hawks were seventeenth
in team defensive rating this season, and they thirty six
(14:52):
and thirty eight at the time of our recording. Last year,
the Hawks lost forty six games. There are people that
want the Hawks to be like the team from last year,
though for some reason. Isn't that strange? Jordan, what's your
outlook on the rest of this season for the Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 5 (15:12):
Well, I think it's imperative that the Hawks keep the
seventh seed if at all possible, which we are still
in a.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
Fight for the seventh seed currently. We have dropped to the.
Speaker 5 (15:21):
Eighth seed after a recent loss to the Portland Trail Blazers,
but we have two games against Orlando remaining. But I
believe one is at home and one is on the
road if I'm not mistaken, and.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
Those two games will be the.
Speaker 5 (15:36):
Side effector and who finishes seventh, who finishes eight. I
think it will take a big collapse to drop any
further than that, and they definitely need to avoid that
because you don't want to get into a nine ten
scenario where one game knocks you out. So we'll see,
I've opened you can get the seventh seed, so that
way they'll get a home game, and then somehow they
(15:57):
lose that home game, they will get another home game.
So that's what I'm looking at now. I think the
sixth seed is done. Detroit has kind of pulled away
from us. We had a chance of ketch a Milwaukee
after just recently beating them, but now they we dropped
the game to Portland and they won their game.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
So it's getting dice now.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Sir, Well, there's a lot of people like I said,
that don't want to see the team succeed at all.
Eye on the other hand, I want them to see
the success of having a clinch playoff spot if they
can pull it off, win a first round series, possibly
having a shot at winning a second round series, you know,
because it is actually possible. If they did clinch the
(16:40):
sixth spot, they play the Knicks, which we know they
can beat them, they've beaten them before. If they finished seventh,
they played the defending champion Boston Celtics, who they've also
beaten several times. Right, I believe they can beat anybody
in the East in a seven game series, and they
show that even during the tournament earlier this year. So
for me, well in Cleveland as well, Cleveland as well.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
Now, I don't want to necessarily want to finish him,
but I like our chances against Cleveland, especially if they
try to put DeAndre on Tree Young I can tell
that he's gonna get cooked, very thoroughly positive. No Zachriss
Shade was named Rookie of the Months or March, had
a real shooting game against Portland, but had thirty six
(17:23):
points against Milwaukee.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
And so he just continues to improve.
Speaker 5 (17:28):
Dyson Daniels, he has become the youngest steals leader in
history of the NBA and in the same stat give
it to us by Grant Shirley on on Twitter. If
he has one hundred and ten steals, it's probably going
up some now in the first half of games this season.
(17:50):
He could have played in zero second halfs all season
and he will.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Still be third in the league. It steals. That is
just insane.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Also a couple of other positive notes, pretty Young has
the most since by any player since twenty nineteen. He
also is the first NBA player since Russell Westbrook in
twenty nineteen to have fifteen hundred points and seven hundred
and fifty since then a single season.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
He is the first Atlanta Hawk ever to do so.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
And also congratulations to Dyson Daniels for breaking Rookie Bladot's
franchise record.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
Are stills in the season.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
And so there are a lot of positives going on
with all a let of Hawks right now. We've been
playing very well here recently, and so I'm not gonna
let one loss stur by opinion or what I think
this team can be going forward.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
And that's my point is near the end of the
regular season, when will fans get excited with the possibilities?
At this point, we have who should be the Rookie
of the year in Recarchee, just one rookie of the month,
I believe you just mentioned it, defensive player of the
year possibility in Dyce and Daniels. We have an all
NBA player and Trey Young obviously he shows that again tonight.
(19:02):
Right When will the fans in Atlanta realize how much
better we have it now? And then going into the future,
We're gonna find out real soon as we get ready
to transition into the second half of the show, which
is gonna be really quick, y'all, go quick quick.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Quick also named Defensive Player all the Month for the
Eastern Conference, and he has moved to be the betting
favorite for the most Blue Prove Player of the Year
of the.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
EBA as well.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
So excellent, excellent, what's the word I'm looking for commendations
for a team, a young team too. We're one of
the youngest teams in the NBA, by the way, everybody,
So as we get ready to transition, we're gonna do
something we haven't done before ever on Around the ATL
In the second half of the show, we're gonna come
right back on Sports Visions ninety two to one FM.
(19:49):
Y'all gonna go anywhere you are listening to Around the
atl with Chris and Jordan will be right back with
more Atlanta Sports Talk.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
To y'all.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Is gonna be a brief break. This is Chris all
Around the ATL on Sports Visions ninety two one FM,
and we're going to do something we have never done
before on Around the ATL to date. We're gonna talk
about a team that is outside the state of Georgia. Now,
usually we wouldn't do this, but there's a city that's
kind of close to one of the cities that we
(20:40):
talk about all the time, AKA Columbus, Georgia is not
that far away. That's the city of Arburn, Alabama. And
because the NCAAAA tournament is going on right now, we
gotta talk about them just a little bit. The Arburn
Tigers who are the number one seed and they just
want to get to the final four. They beat the
Michigan State will Michigan State Spartans at this seventy to
(21:04):
sixty four, and I actually watched that game. I saw
Johnny Broome get hurt and I thought he was not
gonna come back, and then he did. Willis Reed came
into the game, snagged a big rebound and then hit
a three and they ended up winning the game. Jordan
talked about Auburn briefly.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
Sir, Well, they're getting the face off against the Florida Gators,
so you got an NCC versus NCAC match up with
the winner going to the final four. And the last
time they played the Gators, they beat the Gators pretty handlily,
and so I do think they have a great chance.
Speaker 6 (21:36):
Now.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
Am I excited to talk about Auburn, No, I'm not,
because they are arrival up about Georgia Bulldogs. But they
are all listening area. So we do thank everyone everyone
includes goes in Auburn, Alabama or listening to your folks
on around the atl All sports business down to two
point one fl And to be honest with you, sir,
if it comes down to the Gators in Auburn, and
(21:59):
A would really not rooting for anybody, but if I
had to root for somebody, I'll pull the win over
the game. So either ahead, we're gonna get an SEC
team in the championship.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
Now, I don't.
Speaker 5 (22:11):
Say we're gonna get a champion from the SEC, because
I do think Duke is gonna win the whole thing.
That being A said, I just disrespected Houston big time
and so you know, watch them win it all. It
proved me all the way wrong. So we'll see Chris.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
If you're watching on IMT and Worldwide Radio on YouTube,
you see me kind of shrugging my shoulders a little bit.
But we got through the segment though, all the same.
So shout out to Auburn. Still, you know, SEC representing,
but that's all I can do for them. Atlanta VI
reminder of the announcement, we got Leah m and the
MVP of last year's Pro Volleyball Federation. It's gonna be
(22:48):
on around the Atail in their interview, So definitely keep
up with Sports Visions ninety two to one FM. For that.
That being said, the Vibers still on fire. They continue
their winning ways by beating San Diego Mojo three to one,
and then shut out the Columbus Fury three to zero.
Leah Emmon had twenty two points, two blocks. Morgan Hints
(23:08):
had twenty digs and five assists in the shutout against
the Fury. Ako Jones Iicho Jones had four blocks and
seven digs and two aces as well. So they're playing
pretty good. They're fourteen and eight now they're second place.
Speaker 4 (23:20):
Amazing.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
If you still have not watched a professional volleyball game,
what are you waiting for? They'll be in the playoffs
again this year. Don't miss out. Make sure you buy
your tickets. Let them know around the atl sent you, Jordan.
Could you give us some updates on Atlanta United College
Park and also a reminder about that championship we just.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
Won, Yes, sir.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
We's start with the Skyhawks. They dropped their first game
to the Greensboro.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
Swarm one twelve to one oh one.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
Atlanta was led by the guy with the greatest name
in the world, Jordan Bowton with seventeen points and Keivon
Harris with twenty one points in that game. Then they
faced off against Greensboro in College Park and they bounced
back in won that game one, nineteen to one twelve.
Keivon Harris had twenty eight points and fourteen rebounds in
(24:14):
that game, and day Kwan plowed and had eighteen points
on five or seven shooting two or three from three
point range. These Skyhawks have finished up the regular season
at seventeen and seventeen and unfortunately that was not good
enough to quantify for the top six in the Gleague playoffs.
So that is gonna be it for the College Park Skyhawks.
(24:36):
Decent season, but unfortunately kind of faded off at the end,
losing a lot of players, some playing with the big club, some.
Speaker 4 (24:43):
Were snatched upon ten day.
Speaker 5 (24:45):
Or two way contracts by other teams, and so you know,
we look forward to catching the Skyhawks again next year.
Past for a lot of united they did get away
in this week thankfully, they beat NYCFC four to three.
That proved College Parks record to two wins, two losses
(25:06):
and two draws. They actually were down in that match
because NYC got an early goal.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
Then Alexei Marunchuk.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
Scored at the forty second minute to title match, and
then NYCFC struck again twice to take a three to
one lead.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
But then you had Keaton Parks scored in the sixty
