Speaker 1 (00:00):
Since twenty sixteen, I've been blessed with the opportunity to
share conversations with those that have been featured on NBC's
The Voice. Sure, we'd put them up on the platform,
but then most people were going, so where's it at?
So now we finally centralized it for you. Every performer
from twenty sixteen forward Aero dot net, a r roe
dot Net enjoy the exploration. Hey, welcome to missed Opportunity.
(00:25):
I love sharing conversations. Hosting them requires some show prep.
My podcasting platforms feature thousands of guests. Now what you
don't have access to are my missed opportunities. I mean,
the show prep was done, the conversation did not happen,
though I keep all my notes, and the reason why
is because I believe that paths will cross again, which
they have four different times. Let me explain missed opportunity.
(00:47):
It's my questions and statements without their answers. I'm leaving
open enough space at the end of every question, hoping
they will download the talk and insert their answers. Missed
opportunity is a piece of history. It's like a message
in a bottle that's been tossed out to see I
hope to locate a destination. This week, we're putting focus
(01:08):
on my missed opportunity with writer and director Troy Duffy,
the creator of the Boondock Saint films. He burst out
of the scene in Hollywood in nineteen ninety seven. His
first film earned him fifteen million bucks. Not bad for
a first timer, right. Unlike most, Troy Duffy created a
cult classic that defied the passage of time. It earned
(01:31):
him a global fan base that continues to grow twenty
five years later. Troy Duffy got his first bite of
success in elementary school when he won a local, statewide
writing contest. What he took home was the Shell Silverstein Award.
You can't get any better than that. The success of
Boondock Saints has led to a sequel released ten years later.
(01:54):
This entire series has generated into comic books, graphic novels,
and a ton of merchandise, including one point three million
different tattoos. The invitation to share a connection with Troy
Duffy arrived on September second, twenty twenty five. I was
given a twenty minute window that would begin at nine
forty am Eastern. My response was perfect. The conversation would
(02:18):
take place on Friday, October seventeenth. What made it even
more official was the zoom link attached. This was really
going to happen. Well not really. Within twenty four hours,
the talk had been shifted. A small note attached talked
about a future date might be available. We'll keep you
up to date, and as they always say, we deeply apologize. Hey.
(02:39):
Coming up next, my questions, my statements without their answers,
with the one and only Troy Duffy. And always remember,
I do invite these very creative people to answer the
questions and send them back. Hey, welcome back to Missed Opportunity.
This week, my focus is on my Missed Opportunity with
(03:00):
Troy Duffy. Boondock Saints Volume one, The brothers McManus are
back and they are headed into Boston's underworld. Before they
were legends, was their blood. What's your favorite story to write?
Good versus evil or justice and brotherhood? Boondock Saints has
(03:20):
introduced the world to comic books, graphic novels, merchandise, and
even tattoos as the writer of these stories, because it
starts with you, what is that like? Your father served
as an open door to pulling classics closer to your imagination.
That experience is where you stand today knowing how important
(03:41):
writing has always been, especially in elementary school. What teachers
stood out the most to you? Right out of the box.
You created a cult classic movie, one that continues to
grow in popularity. What does that do to your imagination?
And is it like Hotel California or Rumors from Fleetwood
Mac And it's all always that battle to try to
top your biggest and best. I love how you describe
(04:06):
Roco a crooked grin with a puppy dog set of eyes.
Movies versus novels. How did you bring Roco to the
paragraphs and make it believable for all who were involved?
The brothers are seeking the truth. So many of us
can't relay with this because we would rather run from it.
Under the McMahons name is Vigilante Justice. That's pretty serious, dude.
(04:30):
You're looking to make this a long series of stories.
That's writing a story before it happens. What's your projection?
I mean, what it really comes down to it. This
book is a love letter to the fans. This isn't
necessarily about brothers, but it's about two guys that happen
to have a goal and they're sharing it inside these stories.
(04:51):
Your fans have always had questions and men you always
step up to give them answers. When did you know
that it was time to really bring forward that leadership
role as a writer. What led you to this new
level of telling the McMahons story, because I mean you're
taking a chance. Is that just the creative soul inside
of you. Doesn't matter where you are in this nation
(05:13):
or around the world. Every alley hides a threat, every
handshake hides a blade, every act of justice demands a
darker response. Writing was once a place of fear. In
the very beginning. You would sit there and say ah ah,
But then you set yourself free. Where are you at
today in thought? And there you have it, another missed opportunity,
(05:37):
a lost piece of history. You now know the questions,
so let's locate the reactions. The door is always going
to be open. If you are or know Troy Duffy,
