Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, thanks for being a part of the conversation. Let's

(00:02):
do some pod crashing. Episode number three ninety one is
with Courtney Armstrong and Boudy move on from the podcast
True Crime Tonight. I'm gonna start it off by saying this,
I love it because you're educating me. You're giving me
a better insight of what is really taking place, and
I'm not left with the voices in my head when
I'm sitting there on CNN dot Com reading about what's

(00:22):
going on.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good. That's the goal. That's the goal. That's actually very complimentary,
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
The goal for you guys to do that on a
daily basis, though, I mean, I mean, my god, I
mean you guys have got to put your stuff together
real fast, don't you.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, I mean some like the other day, we were
getting stories and right as we were basically going live
on the radio. So yeah, we were getting up to date,
you know, real time information and you know, spitting it
out as professionally as possible.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
You know what's so funny about that is that I
came from the day of radio where we used to
have the teletype, and the teletype would sit there and
they would give us everything about the world news and
things like that. We would I mean, when Mount when
what was it a Mount Helen blew up out there
in the state of uh oh yeah, in Washington or Oregon.
What happened is is that in Montana that affected us
and I had to be on that teletype and on
the air at the same time reading it as it

(01:16):
was happening.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Wow, oh my gosh.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Well, hopefully hopefully we can get to that level of
professionalism one day.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
But you're going to because I mean, I mean, if
they suddenly, all of a sudden, something big happens with
p Diddy, all of a sudden, You're you're going to
be on the air making sure that people are up
to date. And that's what I love about it is
you guys are so up to date that we're becoming
addicted to you.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Oh that's great.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
We were live yesterday Courtney, right, and there was a
breaking headline about Travis Decker. He's a man on the run,
and we were kind of hoping that we would get
a capture while we were live. I mean, it was
really looking like we were going to be able to
break that. But one day, hopefully very soon, he'll be
caught and maybe we'll even be live to announce it.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Oh, I was going to say, it's kind of you know,
the point or part of the point of the show
is to catch everyone up to date. If you've had
no time to listen to the news or look at it.
We'll cover all the major headlines that you're caught up.
And then since we are live for two hours and
obviously then goes into the daily podcast, we get to
also cover other do what we call deep dives and

(02:29):
sort of longer looks into other cases. And we do
that with experts, forensic pathologists and detectives, journalists, and also
listener interaction, which that's awesome. I think that's our collective
favorite body. Our co host Stephanie Leidecker and I really
love the interaction.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
The greatest thing is we've been talking about how it's
being done live but to a podcaster. You know, one
of the things that because that's where I discovered you
was because of the podcast. And the thing is is
that I went back to the very beginning and moved
forward with the story, and therefore, by the time I
caught up to everywhere you guys are, I was so
often educated that that it's like, okay, all right, let's

(03:11):
make this happen. So I love the idea that you're
putting your live show on the podcast so those that
are behind can catch up.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, you know, and that, like you said, that's the idea.
You know, a lot of these true crime cases and
a lot of true crime fans and myself included, will
spend hours researching a case, hours and hours, and you know,
the idea of this show is, you know, maybe you
don't have hours and hours, but you do want to
know everything that happened today.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
We're going to give you the highlights, and if something
sparks your interest, you can go and spend you know,
twenty minutes and get more you know, the juicy, you know,
deep minutia detail. But we're going to give you the headlines.
We're going to give you the highlights, and when the
time permits, God willing, we're going to be able to
deep dive a lot of this stuff. But a lot
of people just don't have time to do all the

(03:57):
deep digging that that the show is going to be
able to provide for you. So that's kind of the goal.
And you know, and of course the listener interaction, this
is kind of like all new for us, right, like you,
as podcasters, we don't usually have listener interaction, right right,
it's usually after the fact. This is like real time.
We're having call ins where we get to talk backs
from the iHeartRadio app. Yes, and those are pretty real times.

(04:20):
So the listener interaction makes us kind of like up
our game a little bit because they're like, you know,
keeping our feet to the fire with these amazing questions
they ask. It's been a lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
You don't hear Chris Cuomo on there with with people
calling in saying hey, Chris, what's going on?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Man?

Speaker 1 (04:33):
No, hell no, it's all about him and keeping us
up today. But Corney here right, here's one of the
things I don't want to ask you about the word allegedly.
Do you get tired of having to say that?

Speaker 3 (04:45):
No, it's my favorite word. I should get tired of
saying it because I say it all the time. But honestly,
I am so trained from doing documentaries and podcasts and
working with lawyers and to make it really clear because
listen a lot of things, you know, people say it
and then it becomes tacked and I'm like, well, you know, standby,

(05:05):
So yeah, I'm a little bit the allegedly annoying police.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
My sub title, Yeah, I'm I'm a show prep whore.
So therefore, how do you guys show prep? I want
to learn how you're so up to date and focused?

Speaker 2 (05:20):
A lot of Google alerts, A lot of Google alerts.
I mean, you know, obviously we need every day to
talk about, you know, what's happening mid day, right, because
in the middle of the day we can kind of
get an idea for how things are going, and then
from there we kind of select, like the cases that
we want to talk about tonight, like a lot happened

(05:40):
today and Karen Reid, for instance, let's talk about that.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
So then once we have our little meeting and we
have our assignments, then you know, collectively, each of our
hosts goes and researches that case and adds literally up
to date minute. And the problem with it is, too,
is because a lot of this news is online and
there's a lot of like you know bait or you know,
headline bait, bait, click clickbait. Sorry, you have to be

(06:07):
really careful. So we have to like research each like
minutia detail to make sure it's accurate as well, like
if it's not being misreported, it's you know, accurate. So
we spend like a good part of the afternoon fine tuning,
you know, all all that information and then literally right
Courtney like up to the minute we hit the live
with the radio show we are we are getting and

(06:31):
putting in facts and getting new information right before we
go live and sometimes even during the show.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
And then also errow Step we have the best producers
in the business tahahaus and unbelievable true crime researchers who
are double checking and going to the Department of Justice
website if we need facts. Alison has up the research
and then Stephanie Leibecker, our co hosts, she really brings
she has the most instant and enthusiastic approach to all

(07:02):
things through crime, and it's great. She's like the audience
proxy who said what everyone else is thinking, and so
she brings that I have to know this, and then
we dig in.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
See all of that works out in the performance. And
the reason why I say that is because there's a
reason why I trust what you're saying. And now I
understand why, because your confidence and your courage when you're
when you're delivering that show is felt on this side
of the speakers.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Oh that's oh my gosh, I'm giddy from hearing you
say that. Thank you. Like, but you know, if there's
things that we're not sure of, we're going to be
honest with you. You know, we're going to tell you. You know,
we're going to check into this and get back to you.
Because our audience is like super smart and they ask
really good questions and there's going to be time we
just don't know the answer, right, Like, none of us

(07:48):
are lawyers, you know, we're kind of like amateur and
in a sense that we're not you know, professionally in
the courtroom and things like that. But yeah, we'll tell you, hey,
we're not sure, We're going to get back to you,
and we're you know, we'll follow up tomorrow with the
correct answer. We're just I don't know. It's just it's
just this great little atmosphere that we've got going on

(08:08):
and building a rapport with the audience, and we just
love the questions they ask and we want to we
want to keep it rolling.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Please do not move. There's more with Courtney and Boudy
coming up next. The name of the podcast is True
Crime Tonight. We are back with Courtney and Boudy. I
love the way that you wrap up each episode, and
the reason why is because you make it very real.
You make it sound like that, Hey, we've been sitting
inside your car as you've been driving through Charlotte traffic,

(08:35):
and we're going to break down what we just did today,
just just to remind you of what we did so
that when you come back tomorrow you're gonna you're gonna
be really have a clear head.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Yeah, that's the idea. We want to get you all
caught up and up to speed and on the same
you know, because here's the thing. We really just love
sitting around the kitchen table drinking our coffee and gossiping,
you know, and and true crime in a lot of
sense is getting all the dirt on what happened, right,
And that's kind of like what we are. And we

(09:05):
all get along really well. We have a really good relationship,
and it's I just kind of feel like when I
sit down and I'm ready to go live that I'm
just sitting with my girlfriends drinking coffee around the kitchen table,
getting everybody called up to speed on what's been going
on today.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
All right, this might be too inside for listeners. But
do you do the cheers bar approach in the way
of the position that you place your body because in
radio we're taught put your elbow on the table and
lean into that elbow, put it underneath your chin and
have that conversation.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
I'm going to start. I got the pro because you're
gonna start for sure.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
It opens up your conversation because it's such a natural
position to go into, because it's right that you're intrigued
in what is being shared.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Yeah, that's a good you're Yeah, you're absolutely right because
you're like kind of leaning forward, like give me more information.
You got your head, you know, in your hand and
your elbow the desk. Yeah, I'm going to start doing that.
I love it.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
What is it with our addiction to true crime? Is
it really based on is it near where I live?
And what if it is, what can I do? Because
we were all so inquisitive. We all want to know,
but at the same time we want to know how
far away is it so I can be safe.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
I think I think the curiosity is part of keeping
ourselves safe. Listen, you know, knowledge is knowledge is power,
and talking about what is out in the world and
what to sort of be aware of. And to your point,
is it in Charlotte, is it in my backyard right now?
Or what to be aware of? So I think it's
it's all of the above and just really taking fear

(10:43):
and maybe getting a little power over it and saying, Okay,
at least maybe I can intellectualize something.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yeah, I agree. If I know a lot about something,
I feel a little bit more in control of it.
And I know that's crazy, but I feel like a
little bit more in control of it. So if I'm
aware of what's going on, I feel like I can
control it a little bit more.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
That is so funny you say that, because in a
stay of uncertainty, you kind of give us a solid anchor.
Is what you do?

Speaker 2 (11:15):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (11:16):
I love you arrow absolutely?

Speaker 2 (11:19):
I know, Like, can we can we put the arrow
for the rest of the day. This is wonderful.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Well, you guys have done your homework. I mean, I've
been a podcaster since twenty twelve, so to sit down
with people that are living this lifestyle and it is
a lifestyle, you're doing it right.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Yeah, thank you. Oh my god, I'm so flattered. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
No, we were, and we have then twelve we were
trying to find a.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Good balance between entertaining, educational and fun. You know, you
have to you have to treat these things. These are
real people, real victims, real trauma, you know, real problems,
and it's hard to talk about right and make it engaging.
It's very difficult to talk about because you don't want
to exploit people. You know, you don't want to exploit
their trauma and like be giggling and laughing. But you

(12:07):
also don't want, you know, the audience to be in
a completely sad headspace the entire time either. Yeah, and
so we were really trying to make it you know, respectful,
but also you know, like giving you the feeling like
like you said, the tears kind of thing, like come
in and sit down with us and have a conversation.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Well, you're so up to date, and I mean, I
mean you actually brought up the tilent All murders and
it's like, whoa, I live that? What are you girls
talking about that for? You're not old enough to know this?

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Oh I'm fifty two. I remember it well, I remember
it very well.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yep, I'm very old enough to be here errow, but
I don't all that was also a it was an
unbelievable story that was worth telling, but also b it
was at the time, I don't quote me now, but
it was like number one where it was streaming, and
it was a really, you know, a big documentary, and

(13:01):
we do talk about not just not only cases, but
what are we watching in true crime? What should you watch?
What's going on? And you know kind of skindal or
pop culture that's crime adjacent with body, so it's it's
kind of all of that, and that's why the title
it all came up was the documentary Wow.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Yeah, is there a side of your personality that's sitting
there going Okay, We've had p Diddy, we retired of him,
we want Luigi, we want that story, we want him
in court. We want this thing to go forward. And
how the hell are we going to prep for this?

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Oh yeah, I'm over Diddy.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
I'll be real.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
I cannot If I see another ditty headline, I'm going
to lose it.

Speaker 3 (13:41):
But no, anybody. It feels different than Stephanie Wiecker for sure,
because Stephanie would be all didty all the time.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Oh yeah, she was. We each I think we each
have different kinds of cases that we like to follow.
You know, like that we like to talk about, which
makes the show really fresh, you know, because we all
have different perspectives on the on the cases that we
are following, and we all also really have a different
interest in different kinds of cases. And Luigi's my kind
of case. Wow, you know there's mystery and motive and

(14:12):
manifesto of all things, a manifesto. I love a good manifesto.
So yeah, there's I can't wait to sink my teeth
into that. I'm definitely looking forward to Luigi.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
What was your reaction when the Baldoni case was thrown out?
Because I sat there and went crap, dang. I would
have loved to have heard that.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
I know, I know we were we were always shocking.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Yes, yeah, I mean you know, and I think we'll
still here. I imagine that, you know, Blake's will still
go forward, so we'll get that side. And also Baldoni
he can refile a case. I think it's here a
couple of weeks, but.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
He has until yeah, eleven days, so he could rely.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
He file.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
He can't appeal based on his current filing, but he
we can refile, which I do probably think he will do.
We'll have to stay tuned and you know what, you'll
have to tune in to find out.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
Wow, where can people go to find out more about
everything that you guys are up to, because this is
not your only podcast and performance. You guys have been
at this for a while.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Yeah, we've all worked together for a bunch of years,
and specifically with iHeart we did Pipson Massacre or Idaho Massacre,
Murder one oh one Death Island. So we have all
of those podcasts with iHeart and people can find us
at True Crime Tonight's show on TikTok and Instagram and

(15:38):
True Crime Tonight on Facebook, and of course we're on
the iHeartRadio app. And you know our listeners are both
live on the radio and the podcast because listen sometimes
you don't have time to catch it live. And so yeah,
we're also on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Wow, twenty minutes with you is not enough. You're gonna
have to come back to this show so we can
continue this talk anytime. Excellent made it you guys be
brilliant today.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Okay, you too, wonderful, Thank you, thank you.
