Speaker 1 (00:00):
Those old saynts, you know, those things that your family
and friends usually came up with, that came out of nowhere,
and sometimes it only made sense. I mean, they had
to start somewhere, right, Who, what, where, why, when? And how?
Some of those old sayings are not only ancient, but
still carry a powerful punch even today. In fact, I
live by one of those old saints. Winning is a choice.

(00:23):
The goal of these episodes is to help preserve not
only a language, but lessons in life. My name is Arrow.
It comes to me in spurts. It's the best way
to explain it. It describes an irregular flow of thought, ideas,
and creativity. It is the modern version of it fits
and spurts, and fits and starts, which was an expression

(00:47):
that was often used in the fifteen hundreds. First, the
word fits refers to sudden brief action or an explosion
of emotion. Now let's add in the word starts. You know,
fits and starts. It was added in the building of
this phrase in the sixteen hundreds, referring to a sudden,
jerky movement. What that has to do with it comes

(01:08):
to me in spurts is almost unexplainable, but it's historically connected.
Now let's bring in fits and spurts. We already know
what fits represents sudden brief action. Adding in spurts refers
to a sudden burst. It conveys that our mental processing
has had a sudden burst of activity. Now, as a

(01:29):
daily writer, I deal with this and timestamp everything that
I document and the reason why, because as that writer,
it doesn't come to me all in one spurt. It's
several different spurts. And I'm not the only one who
speaks like this. Sit down sometime with a songwriter who
will say, well, you know that song took me twenty minutes,
and then another artist will tell you, well, you know

(01:51):
that was about three decades in the making. In your
own personal life, does it come to you in spurts?
Something our parents would say? My name is Arrow.
