Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome to this episode of Exposition, the Arts
and Culture podcast. I'm your host, Ella Tinsley, and joining
me in the studio today is as of Faust, a senior,
talking about his third and final performance of Big Band
Holiday Jukebox. Go ahead and introduce yourself if you don't mind.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Hello, my name is Asa Faust.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
I am a senior vocal music education major, and I'm
here to talk about the Big Band Holiday Jukebox.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Wonderful. Welcome in, Welcome in. So yeah, I guess my
first question is what is Big Band? What are you
doing for it?
Speaker 3 (00:31):
The Big Band Holiday Jukebox is a big collaboration amongst
the vocal people, amongst the theater people, and the jazz band.
It's a big jazz holiday show. We get a bunch
of holiday tunes, the jazz band backs us up and
we sing when there's a whole production that goes alongside it,
and it's just this super fun, super high energy holiday experience.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
What's your role in that? Are you singing playing?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
I am going to be on stage doing a couple songs.
I'm in the ensemble for a few. I have a
solo which is going to be super fun and that
that's what I'm doing.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
I did want to ask what are some of the
tunes that you're going to be playing as well?
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Well? My solo personally is let it Snow, Let it Snow,
Let it Snow. There's some cool renditions of Santa Claus's
coming to town. There's your mean One, Mister Grinch fun.
There's all sorts of things that you would expect and
things that you wouldn't expect.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
As far as the holiday show.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Goes, do you have any favorite Christmas traditions or tunes.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Well, I'm a big fan of a lot of Christmas
music because it's just that old jazzy sound that I
really really like. I'm a big fan of Oh Holy Night.
It's one of my favorite songs. It's one of the
songs I auditioned with last year. I guess it was
two years ago and it was super fun to do
and just kind of rip it out. I love hearing
it in church every so often, and it's just a
good song to have. As far as Christmas traditions, my
(01:46):
dad always reads the night before Christmas. Even though my
family is between nineteen and twenty seven now, we all
we all sit down in front of our dad and
he reads the Night before Christmas out of the book
that we've had for forty years.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Awesome those really I love it.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
I was going to ask, what has it been like
putting this show together? Have you performed on it previously before?
I have?
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, this is my third year doing the Jukebox. I
went and saw it my freshman year and was like,
how did I not know this was a thing?
Speaker 2 (02:12):
So I I auditioned for it.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Super great. I was lucky to get in and they
they've had me back ever since. It's very high energy.
A lot of it is very as much more personal
work than learn it all in the ensemble because there's
so such a massive volume of stuff to learn that
we have to come in further than we were the
week before, otherwise we're just going to fall behind. So
it's very not high pressure, but you have to keep going.
(02:35):
You got to keep the ball rolling, otherwise it's not
going to be as good as you'd.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Like it to be.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Right, And is it difficult to work with so many departments?
Because you've got the vocal people, you've got the theater people,
you've got all the jazz people.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
And in some scheduling ways, I'd say it's difficult. I
think the hardest scheduling part is making sure that we
can go into jazz band and rehearse with the jazz band.
But other than that, No, it's really quite easy. Like
there's a lot of people that we have a set
schedule time. I've had some difficulties going rehearsals because of
some class conflicts and stuff like that, but they've been
extremely willing to work with me in all of that
(03:07):
and it's been very appreciated. So No, it's really quite
simple to do and very manageable.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Wonderful. That was great to hear. I'm really excited for
the performance. I know everybody really looks forward to the
Big Band Holiday Jukebox.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Oh yeah, No, my parents try and come every year,
and last year my dad said it was one of
the best shows he's ever seen, so I thought that
was really cool. Well, hopefully it's the same thing again
this year. It's shaping up to be real cool, So
come on out.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Awesome and do you know off the top of your
head when those showtimes.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Are December fifth and sixth, and I believe they start
at seven thirty.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
I do always like to open up the floor to
my guests before we end here today, is there anything
about your experience so far at SEMO, since you're a
senior that you'd like to talk about.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Oh, man, I don't know. There's a lot that's been
going on.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
But we did just have our last Marching Man game
and all the seniors gave their speeches and everyone had
that nice time. Tears were shed, hugs were given, all
the things. But I mean, I just have to say
I'm really grateful for everything that I've been able to
do here. I've I've not had to stay in one
box of like do this one thing.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
And do that for all of your years. Like I've
been able to do.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
So many different things, and it's really really nice to
have all of that opportunity and to be able to
seize it and like have have the capability to go
after it and the support to do so.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
I mean, really, there's never been something where it's like, no,
I don't think you should do that.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
It's always been backed up by so many people, by
my friends, by my professors, by everyone in my life,
and so it's really been a good experience. Tell your friends, Cosimo.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Yeah, ah, that's so sweet. Thank you for coming in
the studio and talking with me. Yeah. Always a pleasure
to see you.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Oh, it's my pleasure to be here.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
And thank you for listening to this episode of Exposition,
the arts and culture podcast. I'm your host, Ella Tinsley,
and I will see you next time.
