L’opera è uno dei “frammenti d’arcobaleno” proposti da Delaunay nella sua serie Finestre, frutto delle conoscenze scientifiche del primo Novecento su luce e colore, parte integrante del percorso artistico dell’autore.
Nelle Finestre la riflessione sulla luce è al centro del lavoro del pittore. Una luce che frammenta la realtà, creando un ritmo cangiante, che costringe l’occhio a spostarsi incessantemente sulla tela alla ricerca di un impossibile punto di riferimento.
“La luce è qui rivelata in tutta la sua verità”, come scrisse Apollinaire, riferendosi proprio all’opera di Delaunay.
