Host Ben Rice travels to Elk Grove, CA, to discuss Sacramento Beer Enthusiasts co-found Steve Hayer's fundraising campaign F Cancer, with Flatland Brewing owner Andrew Mohsenzadegan. Over pints of delicious Flatland beers, we discuss the reason Hayer started this campaign, how you can support it now and in the future, and the 4 F*** Cancer beer collaborations coming to the Sacramento area in October. This campaign goes to support local cancer-fighting charity Albie Aware. You can support by grabbing a collaboration pint at Urban Roots on October 7, at Flatland on October 14, at Claimstake on October 21, and/or at Crooked Lane October 28. Steve will be selling special nucleated glassware at each location as well. We also catch up with Andrew, discussing his COVID-forced expansion, his leading man good looks and charm, and his constant pursuit of perfection. Oh yeah, and did you know if you buy a pint of each beer and a F*** Cancer glass at each location, you will be entered to win a brew day AT Flatland WITH Andrew? Wowowow! What an absolute dream. So sit back and enjoy as we brainstorm ways to fund cancer research and treatment while Ben overexplains pretty much everything, on episode 177 of Barley & Me. FUCK CANCER, now and forever. Enjoy!

Something. They call it functional alcoholism. But if you know anything about Ben,
he's got vision. With precision microphonesand the teink love the region.
You're about to hear what we canbe. It's time for Barley and Me.

(00:27):
Welcome to Barley and Me. I'myour host Ben Rice. We're here
today in Elk Grove, California, for episode one hundred and seventy seven had
Flatland Brewing with us today from flatLand Brewing. Hello, I'm Andrew Molson's
out of gun and thanks much forhaving us once again and our special guest
to talk about fuck cancer twenty twentythree or fuck cancer now and forever.
Steve Hire. How you guys doingSteve here? Thanks much for coming on,

(00:50):
Thanks for reaching out, and thanksthanks for doing this. This is
pretty cool. Yeah yeah, Nowbefore we get to your your and all
your alone, we need talk aboutnobody else has this problem. So a
quick business house business here at FlatlaneAndrew, it's been booming. Yeah,
the tap rooms hustling. We havea small distribution path that we that we
like to kind of get into coolbeer bars. Uh. It's all going

(01:12):
really well right now, which isfun. It's just a good energy when
when we're around here and I feellike the beer quality is super dope right
now. Yeah, I mean we'refocusing on the little details of the beer
too, now that we have timeto do that, you know, like
like head retention or clarity or propercabernation, like all the small things that
I've always been kind of like therein our background minds. But we're focusing

(01:33):
on the other things now that weknow why have good hops and good hop
quality, you know, selecting ourown hops and working with the purveyors that
that really help us get quality ingredientsallow us to the freedom of of you
know, focusing on the details. So yeah, right now, it's it's
awesome, It's it's fun. Yeah, you've expanded, You've got food now.
Yeah. Yeah, Yeah, that'sbeen a big that's been a big
change. You know. COVID wasa good kick in the pants in a

(01:56):
lot of ways, I mean, not only financially, it was just like,
you know, disheartening. And thenwe had a lot of local support.
I'm sure you've had podcasts all aboutthat. And so the benefit though
is that, uh, is thatwe were able to get a new brew
system based on some of the governmentfunding money and pay off some of our
other loans that we had, uh, so kind of consolidate that, which
is smart. And then the kitchen. Uh you know, back then you

(02:17):
had to buy food to get beardand for us, it's like, you
know, why don't we just doour own thing because the food trucks are
always flaky. They're taking the highestbidder and you and you can't blame them
for it because we're all in business. But for us, it's just kind
of a we had the business planready to go and it was COVID was
the urge to do it. AndI feel like it's really become something or
special. You know, we havewe have a badass chef and his food

(02:38):
quality is abs incredible. So yeah, it's all it's all working. I
feel like opening where we are nowkind of still industrial was it's different than
it is if you're open a brewingnow because we got away with it because
we could back then. You know, we're you know, opening up in
two thousand and sixteen, so we'vebeen eye around for a little minute.

(02:58):
But people are looking for some differentafrica of it. You know, they
want a full experience. They wantthe food, they want the beer,
they want the energy they want. They wanted to hang out with the family
and the kids, and uh,I'm happy to be able to provide that
space now. Yeah, after spendingyou know, literally months just drinking alone,
maybe you're like, maybe I wantmore than beer at the space.
Yeah, drink a beer, whichis what I would do at home.
Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, it'swhole. It's a whole vibe. You

(03:20):
know. It's like you gotta yougotta catch it all. And it's hard
to execute on all those levels withtheir ball, but I feel like we
were doing it. Yeah, you'redoing it. Yeah, And I feel
like all the success that you have, all the things that are going well
for you, you've earned. Imean there was this place is untouchable as
far as quality. Well, that'scool to hear. And you know,
I I tell myself that all time, you know, because there's a lot

(03:42):
of handouts kind of sometimes in thebrewery depending who you know and how you
how you ripped shoulders for people. And for us, it's like we were
I'm a no name homebrewer, youknow, like I didn't I didn't come
from a brewery that had a backgroundor a pedigree, and so I feel
like, yeah, I've earned everythingto get here, and I've learned a
lot in the process. I learnedwhat not to do specifically. Yeah,
that's which was the great teacher, because if you get it right, that
could just be luck. Yeah wrong, you know, you find out what

(04:02):
you did right, right. ButI learned how to be consistent too.
You know, like there's a lotof expectations when you start making good products
that you know, you set thebar pretty high for yourself, which is
the way we want to be ultimately, but you know, to be able
to extually on that day in andday out, that's that's something we're proud
of. Yeah. Absolutely. Andnow I don't know, I don't pick
favorites a lot of times, butyou know, if people had to go

(04:25):
back on the one hundred and seventiessix previous episodes and pick a favorite,
I mean, like, I thinkthe Flatland episode with Dave Ross was phenomenal,
and of course our episode of ClaimsTakes to You that was the other
podcast, but it was fabulous stuffof legends. Yeah, we're taking two
of my favorite episodes we put iton. We're mashing them up there in

(04:46):
the high expectations we're gonna by theway, this is one of my top
three breweries. So and then thebeer is phenomenal, the food is phenomenal.
I'm drinking to death by cats rightnow. This beer. It's straight
yeah, nice. Yeah, yeah, I'll try not to have too many
before I get on my bike andride home today. But yeah, it's
good. Yeah. I'm just doinga coffee cream mail because it's it's early

(05:10):
morning, it is brunch time.It is the perfect brunch beer. It's
so good. Yeah. Yeah, the cream ail lean, clean, snappy,
but you still get the coffee,a little bit of vanilla. Yeah.
Yeah, I'm I'm drinking a lotabout beer right now. It reminds
me a lot of that suit WorkThree Best Friends beer. Absolutely, yeah,
that was the dunk I think right. That was delicious. Yeah,
chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Yeah, and back then nobody was doing lighter,

(05:31):
adjunct flavored beers I got. Youknow, it was really cool to
see, especially very like shoot Work, traditional loggers. Yeah, like they're
first like dipping their toe and likewhat if we did something weird? Yeah,
like I think you do more weirdstuff. This is about and they
nailed it. They nailed it,right, Yeah, I love it yeah,
anyway, Steve, Yeah, weare here today. We are here.
Yeah, we're here because Andrew letus be here, and you're you're
you're doing this for me. Isincerely appreciate it. This is a this

(05:54):
is a big deal to me.So what do you want to know?
Let's kick it off, all right, so far cancer twenty twenty three.
Let's go, that's what we're doing. Tell us about it. So originally,
sorry, I have a I havea this is this really hits me.
So my mom passed away in twentynineteen. I tried to get this
going. I had it rolling prettygood. I think COVID hit so obviously

(06:18):
we we had to shed everything downand it just kind of went by the
wayside. I tried to pick itup last year. I personally did not
put enough effort into it to getit going. That that was on me.
It's pretty training, just a thingto even try to do, you
know, it's a I mean,I have put a lot of work into
it, but honestly, without thebreweries, this wouldn't be possible. I

(06:41):
can't do all this on my own. The breweries are are the ones that
are putting all the money out,you know, making the beer and all
that. So without without the breweries, I can't you know, I can't
go to each breery every weekend tojust show up and hopefully they're gonna let
me do something, you know whatI'm saying. So uh, I asked
the breweries right off the bat,Urban Roots, Flatland Claim, State,
Crooked Lane. There was no hesitationin any of the breweries. And so

(07:05):
far, it's just it's going together. Everybody's working together, you know,
as a team. And I thinkthat it's just I'm hoping that every Saturday
it's just going to be a reallykiller revenge. Yeah. And so it's
every Saturday, even the month ofOctober. Correct, yes, sir,
every Saturday. All right, therewas the run dive. Where are we
going? What are we doing?Okay? So, first of all,
we have partnered up with i'll beAware whose Breast Cancer Awareness for the Greater

(07:28):
sacrament Area. And I did thatbecause Andrews has already worked with him before.
So Sam Sam had a number,Sam Blackman, who's not here today,
he gave me the number. Hereached out to him, and then
from there I just started taking talkingto the executive director, who is Courtney
Quinn. So the first one's gonnabe ten seven at Urban Roots. The

(07:50):
husband and founder of All Be Aware. His name is Doug. He's actually
gonna be at that one because helives in that local area. Nice.
So, and then we're gonna moveon here to Flatland Brewing, which is
ten fourteen. Then on ten twentyone we're gonna move out to Claim Stake,
which is in Rancho, and thenour last event will be at Crooked

(08:11):
Lane Brewing and Auburn and ten twentyeight. Yes, sorry, let me
you throw the date in there. We gotta make sure everybody hears it.
So yeah, Now are there specialtybeers being made for this event? There
are. Everybody's doing a different beer, which is kind of cool. Urban
Roots is gonna do at Check Pilsner. Okay, h flat Land here with
Andrew is going to do a kettlesour uh. Claim Stake is doing a

(08:33):
West Coast ipa, and then CrookedLane is doing a Hazy ipa. So
a little bit we've split it upand try to get everybody to do a
little different things so it's not allthe same beer. Yeah, get check
Pilsner, Yeah, get Check Pilsener. Alright, I'm sorry. A lot
of cool stuff going on with theevent. Yeah. And so as far
as fundraising, besides going to thebrewery drinking the beers, is there anything

(08:56):
else people can do to help withthe cancer event? Well, I have
not. I have not talked tothe brewers as far as donationwise. I
honestly do not feel comfortable asking themfor a certain percentage. I would like
to just leave that up to themand how they feel at the end of
the day. I feel that's that'sthe best way to do it. Whatever
they're willing to give back, that'sthat's fucking awesome. I mean, you

(09:20):
know, you take it, youknow what I'm saying, because the brewery's,
like like Andreas said to me before, they're not making a ton of
money and it's a lot of workto make beer and make some profit off
it. So whatever, you know, everybody's brewing a different beer. I
also bought uh seventy two glasses foreach brewery out of my own pocket.
I will personally be selling those atthe beers. Yeah, so one hundred

(09:43):
percent of the glass sales is goingback. I'm giving a one hundred percent
back to back to all be awarethey'll we'll be selling a whole bunch of
beer. Hopefully it gets some moneyback from some can sails, and there's
some other cool stuff. I thinkCricket Lane has a cornhole tournament that are
going to be doing for a fewhours. So one hundred percent if that's
going to be going back to allbe aware. Awesome. I don't know.
I mean, I'm sure, I'msure some stuff's gonna pop up.

(10:05):
But yeah, so yeah, yeah, lots of a lot to handle it.
I'm really glad you're doing it.Yeah, first of all, yeah,
now are you doing he sorry,I want to focus back one thing.
On the bottom of the glasses.I had the I had the glasses
nucleated on the bottom, which whichbrings out more of the flavor in the
aroma. Andrew know that you guysall know what I'm talking about. But

(10:28):
I had it done with my mom'sinitials and then FC for fuck cancer.
So it was a little cool thingI wanted to add in there. But
you know, it means a lotto me. So yeah, yeah,
I didn't know that that's actually reallyred. Yeah, yeah, I had
Yeah, I had it ducleated onthat out that glass memory Yeah yeah,
forming those letters. I mean,I just wanted. I didn't even I
didn't even get my own logo onthere for the beer page because that's not

(10:48):
what this is. But I wantedto add my touch on the bottom.
So yeah, every glass has mymom's initials and FC for fuck cancer it.
Yeah. Yeah, and that's whereall your bubbles are gonna start out
of. That's right, I'm spellingthat out for you. Yeah, every
time I drink out, she's gonnabe with me. You know what I'm
saying. Yeah, that's brilliant.Yeah. Yeah, And so with all
be aware when they get their funding, where does that ppically go to?

(11:11):
What's it go toward families? Isee them do a lot of events,
which is really cool for the greaterSacramentary area. And I've seen them like
they do a lot of stuff likepeople can't afford to get testing, they'll
they'll pay for it. And I'mtalking I'm not just talking women, I'm
talking men to you. Excuse me. I follow them on their pages down
they do a lot of really coolevents. So, and honestly, funding

(11:35):
towards prevention is yeah, you catchit earlier, it's more successful. You
don't know where to go, they'llhelp you figure out where to go.
You know, you don't have thefunds to pay it, They'll help you
pay for it. You know. It's it's a big deal. Nobody should
fill alone and cancer like, ifyou need to help, there's somebody there
to help you. It's ruining yourlife. It shouldn't ruin your life,
sure, right, absolutely, Andthere's enough support out there, you know,

(11:56):
if you know where to find theresources. And I'll be aware as
been one of them. I mean, they're huge in Sacramento, and I
think finding an organization that supports morelocal because there's the big ones, right,
there's the big, big ones, but you're never quite sure how that's
actually going to benefit the people aroundyou. And so choosing something that's a
little more local I thought was reallysmart too, working with the friends and

(12:16):
the and the people that around usto really help the people around us.
Yeah, so it just makes sensethat, Yeah, that's exactly. That's
one of the reasons why I wantto do local because I don't want to
I don't want the big wigs gettingwhatever we can get back for them.
So yeah, when you look atthe numbers, like how much this money
goes back to the research, backto the families back to people that are
suffering. It's like, well,it was like twelve percent, Like that
seems real low. It's pretty wild. Some of those big charities, how

(12:39):
much money is distributed to administration, which I understand it takes a lot to
run those organizations, and so someof that is fair cost. But you
know, if more than half ofthat money's going out or maybe even a
lot more than half of that moneyis going out of the wrong the wrong
pocket, I always I always keepthat in minded like, Okay, we
who we supporting here? Yeah, right, that's always like it's a shitty

(13:01):
thing about it. It's like youlike I would love to support this obviously,
but like I need to make sureit's done smartly. And like people
that would do it smartly maybe arenot as well known. They don't have
enough fun to actually make a dentin things, right, and so kind
of like you just have to youhave to do it, and mean mindful
they have to do it. Sothat way, those places do have money
to like make an impact that's likea substantial impact, right right, right,

(13:24):
And they've done the hard work inthe leg work of of meeting the
right people that you know, legislatorsor whatever else to change the laws or
you know, in hospitals. Yeah, I mean that's that's a lot of
work, a lot of work andmoney. Yes, and very much.
Yeah. So yes, absolutely supportwhere you can, anywhere you can.
It is gonna be better better thannot supporting at all. Yeah. I

(13:45):
think they just had their twentieth yearanniversary. I'll be aware or they're coming
up on it, so they've beenaround for a while. Yeah, so
they're actually gonna be I tried toget her to come to this Brue day,
but she can't make it. Soshe's actually gonna go to the Brute
Claim Stake because she wants to shootsome video and stuff. So I thought
that was pretty cool, very cool. Yeah, so I love it.

(14:05):
And speaking of shooting some video,I heard you're having some trouble with this
event as far as marketing. Itried to uh, I thought I thought
I was gonna have somebody. Iwas supposed to have somebody reach out to
me from one of the local newsstations. That they don't seem to be
too fun of the whole fun cancerthing, like saying that on TV.
So maybe that wasn't the smartest nameof it, but I'm gonna you know,

(14:26):
I'm doing what I'm doing. Andyeah, you can ask strick right,
yeah, well, you know, you know, where's the creativity?
You know, are you seriously youguys can't come up with something? I
mean yeah, yeah, yeah,so it's fine. Yeah, I mean
what about fun to cancer? Yeahyeah, so many different we worked around
it. Yeah, fun cancer, that's fun. That's that's fun. Yeah.

(14:50):
Feeling the wide research yeah, obviouslyobviously. Yeah, I don't know.
It's a little disappointing, but that'sfine. You know, we're getting
it out there. We're gonna I'vebeen posting shit out of it. So
yeah, let's see what happens.I hope, I hope. I mean,
I see I'm watching all the eventsright now, and and there,
you know, somebody say they're coming, somebody say they're interested. But I
feel like when it, you know, when it gets down to it,

(15:11):
I feel like people are going toshow up. Yeah, when push comes
to struve, Yeah, I feellike, Yeah, I've had people like
I've told people like just that aren'ton the beer page, just like what
I'm doing, and they've like literallytried to hand me money. Yeah,
and I'm like no, no,don't. I'm not. It's like so,
so it's all be aware and work. Yeah, I'm like that money,
put it into a back account realquick, and then send it to
them digitally. Yeah. You know, I was just about to mention that

(15:33):
same thing, and Steve, youcould probably open up like a like a
kind of a go fund of mesort of thing and then use that money
to donate to ALBI. Yeah that'sa good idea. Yeah. That way,
people have a page that's associated withwith the fuck cancer event specifically,
and then they you know, theyfeel good that it's going to you,
and then of course handing over toright. It's like what I was doing
with my trucks for charity during COVID. People would send me money that I
would let me put it into thething. Yeah. Yeah, I'm like

(15:56):
you, I'm like, fine, but you are allowed just giving money to
them. You don't have to giveit to me. You don't double double
thing. Plus I think fund meto take a percentage of it. I
think, don't they Yeah, sorry, I would do it. You would
venmo me. I would send itout like me. Also, you can
just go right to that page. You don't have to send it to me
and suddenly the when I was like, oh, by the way, just

(16:17):
to be clear, you can justsend it over there that you don't you
can cut this middleman out. Youdon't have to know, you don't have
to trust me. I mean Igave every single dollar I got right away.
I still like, you know, you could just do it. And
then it's hard for me to trackhow much money I raised. But I
think when I started being like, hey, just honestly, just send it
there, don't even bother wasn't tradingit, I think I had raised sixty

(16:37):
buckshow for you for charity stuff? So and I'm I don't have the reach
you know that SPE has, youknow, so I think, yeah,
if you have a way for poolto know that they can donate through SPE
which is for those don't ware Sacramentoa pretty large group page. Yeah,

(16:57):
but they have waited that you candirect them towards making donations. Sure if
they can't make the event, that'sactually a really great idea. Oh h
and there is a sorry, there'sa photo contest that we're doing, which
is super fucking cool. So ifyou can get okay, well, there's
a couple leisure, a couple ofthings that we should go back on here

(17:18):
all the time in the world.Sorry, sometimes it takes you know,
I can't believe you're still here.He went to bed at like three am
this morning. Oh Jesus, Yeah, I'm a smart person. So not
only not only are the four breweriesmaking their own beer, the can labels
as far as colorwise and everything aregoing to be pretty much the same.
But each of the breweries had totake letters out of fuck cancer and use

(17:41):
that and the names of their beers. Okay, and those letters will be
bold in their name. So whenyou put all four cans together, it's
gonna spell fuck cancer. Nice.So really cool touch. So with that
being said, uh, if youcan get your hands on all four glasses
and all four cans of beer,I'm gonna do a pot contest with the
random generator. Yeah did you seethat? And then the winner's gonna come

(18:04):
get to come brew beer with Flatland. So yeah, a lot of work
to get that picture. But thenresult is how often you get to come
to a brewer and brew your ownbeer. I feel like you just asked
Andrew, who would let you doit? Yeah? Pretty much. People
we like brewing. People we likesuper giving. I'm not gonna lie it
like, yeah, well, youknow, I'm still a homebrewer. So
if I get a chance to,you know, kind of share what I've

(18:26):
learned a person, whether they bein the industry or not, let's have
a conversation. Let's learn about beer, you know, benefits everybody. And
then they get there, there's coollittle touch on on the beer. You
know, the we'll take care ofthe recipe, but we'll work with core
ideas what they have to do andtry to excuse his best. He's going
to make sure that it tastes goodbecause on the end run he has to
sell it. Yeah, but he'sgonna he's gonna let him just be there

(18:47):
and you know and put their puttheir mind to it. And yeah yeah,
yeah, that's the other benefit. It's kind of a free labor on
my side. So yeah, saveyour back phone these beers. If you
green out of me. Yeah, like tonight, I'm gonna go home and
my back's not gonna be on fire. It's gonna be pretty great. Yeah,
come in here and Bruce and Bearand get the brewers breakfast and yeah
it's not bad your breakfast. Yeah, so you gotta buy all four you

(19:14):
do, and you gotta buy allfour cups you do, but all that
money, well, all the moneythrough the glasses at least, Yeah,
I'll be aware. Sure, Soreally you were gonna do it anyway and
you might get to brew with Andrew? Yeah what a chance. I mean,
look as much as Andrew, Ijust want you to know that I

(19:37):
hate you because you're a wonderful humanbeing. You've got a voice that's just
it is very sexy, very sexyvoices, very over handsome. Man.
You're a sweetheart. You're a greatbrewer es basically, but you're also married.
So this is basically like win adate with Andrew, but like the
only way he can, I'm havingto be here to disc So yeah,

(20:00):
the world's most eligible brewer. Youknow, I like it. I like
a new direction with this podcast, but I love it. Also, as
a person who does a lot ofthings with random generators for your comedy stuff,
you should do a double blinds.Should give everybody their own number through
random jenerator, then run back throughso they can't say that there was favorite
is okay? Interesting? I likeit thout there in order based on who

(20:22):
who applied first, right, andthen you're like, okay, but now
this person down number three and thisperson number seven, and then you go
back through again, it's like,oh, number seven's first, you know,
oh, because people will always sayit's friends. So no, no,
no, I did double That isvery true. I did double blinds
here, like I put one morelevel of protection on that. That's smart.
That's smart, good idea. Thankyou for that. Pay attention because

(20:44):
I know how people are, Ohthey are eating. Yeah, especially when
you get a lovely day date withmotions. Again, just trying to put
it out there. I cannot winso great friends and family ineligible. To
be honest with you, I'm doingthis event. I'm already winning. Yeah,
I'm a winner. Yeah, we'regonna we're gonna knock it out the
part yeah. Yeah. And fordonation, I mean we're gonna do one
hundred percent of the proceeds of ourhands for all of it too. I

(21:07):
mean that just makes sense. Idon't think we're legally allowed to say X
amount per pints. We can't dothat, but we'll just say on pent
proceeds. Yeah, because ABC inducementlaws and all that stuff. Yeah,
that's awesome. Thank you. Iappreciate it. I mean, it's everyone
knows every somebody that's affected by cancer, right, So if the more money
we can raise and can help fightthe battle, just do it. I've

(21:29):
had so much reach out on this. People have just messaged me left and
right. What can I do?What can I do? What can I
do? What kind of do Imean? You're doing it right now?
Brother? Yeah, show show upto some events, you know, give
back. Yeah, I mean that'sit. I mean, this, this
event, I feel like it kindof just works itself out. Obviously,
the brewers and the breweries are ahuge part of this. Like I said,

(21:51):
if this wouldn't be happening with thatyou guys. But I mean it
kind of just I don't want tosound too weird, but it kind of
just sells itself, you know whatI'm saying. Like it it. Yeah,
as soon as I started doing thisagain this year, I got so
many people reaching out to me like, oh my god, I still I
still get it, And I'm like, I just just just show up and
support. That's what you can do. Yeah, it's just tell me what

(22:12):
was happening. Right. It's kindof a dick move to not support at
the end of the day, right, we're all busy, and I get
it, but like, there's somany ways to support even you can't make
it. Yeah, if you can'tmake if you could tell other people that
one dollar nation, one dollar goesa long way. If you have a
hundred people that show up, youknow what I'm saying. Yeah, ten

(22:33):
dollars with a hundred people's a thousanddollars exactly, and that's movement. That's
nothing. Maybe I will try toset up something I could go spend me
page. Think that's a really greatidea. Yeah, just watch the percentages
of of kickback whatever. There's somecompanies that take less than others. But
I've never done it in my life, so I don't know, but yeah,
okay from what I've seen. Yeah, or even just you know,
sharing the link to go to allbe aware. Yeah, that's just like,

(22:56):
hey, if you need if youcan't make it, or if you
have it, that's actually probably thebetter way to do it. Yeah,
is if they can get a link, right too, I'll do it.
Yeah, there's no doubt because thenthere's like cuts and cuts and cuts.
A house on your ten dollars,it's four fifty. So yeah, yeah,
I'd rather just say they got onehundred percent of it. Yeah,
send yeah, get it, getit all to him. Let's you know,
yeah don't. Yeah, Like Iwas like, just cut the middle

(23:18):
man. Why am I putting myselfin that with the trunks with heart of
stuff? Like, why am Iputting this in the middle? This is
just here's how you get it right. Yeah, And these and these events
they're going on pretty much all dayfor for everybrewery. Yeah. So yeah,
we're gonna be all day. Imean obviously Kirkland cornhole event, that's
pretty dope. I like that idea. Yeah, she's I think, yeah,
Katie, step that up. Theyhave a regular cornhole tournament that comes

(23:41):
in yep. So I guess theylike volunteered to like it's like from I
want to say, it's from liketwo to five and there's like a ten
dollars entry per team. But theysaid they're going to donate one hundred percent
back to all of you where Yeah. So I mean, yeah, well
you know you we were not gonnahave you do that because you're already doing
the whole photo content us and youjust said you're giving back kind of Well,

(24:03):
they love we love cornhole, butour our space is not designed for
cornhole. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we have a different terrible driveway.
You need a different competition. Well, you know we needed a disc golf
thing. We could do a discgolf league. Yeah, I'm always wanted
to come down here and test.Pretty fun. Yeah, it's some serious
right here. So every third Thursdaywe do in the parking lot. We
have eight disc baskets out and setup and it's a puttle so yeah,

(24:26):
you buy in and it's like aput off, almost cornhole like. So
if you hit a chain it's onepoint, you can make it in the
baskets three points and you eliminate eachother's points on each side and you have
like kind of round robin in onewinner, and we give away discs.
We have our own stamp disc Wegive aways some discs, and we work
with the OTB in Stockton, theBadass Discs Shop down there and they do
dist some discs. And yeah,so I mean we can do something like
that. Because it is a buyin. We just kind of say,

(24:48):
hey, if you guys want todonate more money on top of the buying,
and we'll do it. The bitebuy in too, U to uh
the albeit weare Yeah, that's dope. Yeah, as long as the time.
When is the release the fourteenth orfour fourteenth, bring on the seventeenth
something? Yeah, perfect. Yeah, and of course the beer will be
available beyond just the one day unlessyeah for sure, yeah, for sure.
How you think about what about like, oh, we've got so much

(25:11):
left four pack mixed four pack,Well, there would have to be an
outside thing because we can't buy otherbreweries beer. Yeah, it would have
to go to like teap room orsomething. Steve. Yeah, yeah,
honestly we could. Yeah, wejust give something like that. Yeah,
we could go to a tap roomand they could do mixed four packs if
that's what they want to do.Yeah. Yeah, you start working with

(25:33):
the tap room and say hey,do an event here and get all four
and I don't know, because youknow, like I felt like you you
chose breweries also won their friends. But the way they're spaced out, yeah,
I wanted different. The spacing wasawesome because you do not really wanted
there's you don't travel far to gosupport, it's there's something in your neighbor.
There's something in your neighbor. Yeah, you can make one of them,
right, I mean right, yeah, four absolutely, But you can

(25:56):
make one, and that's had plentyof people tell me we're gonna make two
or three, maybe four. Imean so, so it's a it's a
big deal. People are gonna reallytry to make it. So yeah,
yeah, I like it and Ithink honestly, Yeah, I worked with
the tap room. I'll see ifwe can say something up maybe like a
tap takeover with all the different beers, all the cans that we have one
spot, you can kind of grabthem all. Yeah, a little cheap

(26:17):
after though, after after after,Yeah, it has to be like Halloween
night. Yeah, let's get spook. Yeah, yeah we should. Yeah,
we should do that after Yeah, that would kind of ruin the whole.
Yeah, it would be released ifwe did it before, and it
would not be fun. We wouldn'tbuy the beer in advance. That's not
fun either. I had to beforeit's release. That's not No, it's
not a fun experience for most people. Somebody actually, somebody actually tried to

(26:40):
do that, but we put astop to it. Good good, it
was me. So I'm sorry.Look, I can't make it. Just
give me the beer right now.Just give me the beer like we have
not made it. Yeah, yeah, that's a problem. I guess they're
all they're all timed out to befresh by the time the release comes around.
Yea and all. And at theend of it, the beers are
still going to be there's not gonnabe a problem with anything. Well again,

(27:02):
stitch strategy. Right, so Lagerbeing the first release, right,
sour Ours being the second release?Yeah? Perfect, Yeah, I mean
it plays out perfectly. Yep.There's a lot of thought behind that.
Yeah, And that was all planned, I said, the can thing,
it was just so that you wouldn'tfeel embarrassed about talking about the can idea
talking about Yeah, no, Ithink that's a great idea. Yeah,

(27:25):
all right, we'll set up we'llset up a tap takeover somewhere. Okay,
Yeah, that's easy, multiple somewhars, maybe even yeah, depending on
you know what, what's you shoot, dude, you could do all in
November. Yeah, you know, one weekend a month at a different tap
room, right November. But foryeah, I've already had ideas about next

(27:47):
year. See, I'm I'm thinkingthis year is gonna be great, but
I'm like, man, we couldreally we can improve on this. Honestly,
the four breweries that are doing itnow are always going to be a
part of this if they choose tobe. But next year we can open
this up and see who wants tojump in. I mean, I don't
give a crap. We can doan event every month for this, you
know what I'm saying. So Ithink this is this is how I always

(28:11):
envisioned as we like it was.It started out a really cool, fun
beer group, but then you hadten thousand. Right now, now you
have all this outreach and it's easyto raise money for people, and it's
really cool and why would it not. Yeah, I have no reason not
to. But if I'm gonna giveit back, I'm gonna. I'm just
gonna keep doing it. It's easybecause cancer effects everybody year round. This

(28:33):
one month we all had this isthe month we're gonna pay attention. But
people get it in November, theyget it in January, they get it
next year. Maybe we stay withall be maybe we do a different one.
Maybe we do two different kinds ofcancer. I don't know. Maybe
it's like you just move from oneto another and make sure they're all properly
supported and the awareness, but thoseplaces exist. It's the hardest part for
Actually, this event was finding theright charity, and he had already and

(28:56):
Andrew had already worked with them,so that was a that was a no
brainer. You got somebody local, let's use them. Yeah. And they're
they're they're stoked, they're they're superexcited. So well, great people,
great organization. It just makes sense, especially for the first time. Let's
let's kick it off right right.Yeah, And if we can do ailes
for als, we can do fuckcancer absolutely over. Oh yeah, it
doesn't have to be used to Sacramento. Do do a badass beer fast.

(29:19):
Man. You want to join myteam. You want to be on the
team. You got a great mind, man, you got a great mind.
That's what I say. I'll bevery useful. I meant I won't
be very useful, but yeah,I'm just like I love ideas. Now
you just take my mind into highgear. Yeah, that's just one thing
I will do. You know youcould do now that'd be awesome. And

(29:41):
there's enough that's a great ideas.Actually yeah yeah, So if you get
enough breweries, I mean, whowho, It's like, why would you
not? Right? Right? Andyou can sell I feel like I should
be paying you commission right now.You should be doing then we and then
we can go back to all beaware. Yeah yeah, right, yeah,
exactly. Yeah, that's a fantasticidea. I think I think the
markets there, I feel like thisis oh it's there an idea. I

(30:03):
just I feel like maybe cancer somethingpeople care about. Yeah, you know,
like this could go a billion differentways to think about. Like the
y c IF Yakima Chief Hops. They have the als blend, the veterans
blends, the pink Boots blends.Yeah, so they can make a cancer
blend like a fuck cancer blend. You can work with silver Moon up in
organ that has their fun cancer programsthey do. Yeah, they actually reach

(30:26):
out to me so perfect hopefully ina positive way. Oh for sure.
Good good. Yeah. Yeah.Just like so we've got two pockets that
we know that exists for this,So why can't there be a third pocket,
a fourth pocket? Why can't wejust work this up and down the
East coast or West coast? Iknow where we're at, across America,
across the world. Why is thisjust not a thing that we just do?
Absolutely all right, we can keepthis local that have some outside breries

(30:48):
come in, that'd be great,Yeah, because I always want our local
breweries. Did oh yeah, bea part of you know, I'm more
thinking like, it's not just yourunning. It becomes a thing that,
like every reshart has something like this, right, I think that that just
makes sense. Yeah, before, hold on, don't air this right away
because I guess something back check somepermitting. We're probably not gonna do it.

(31:14):
Also, today's date is September seventeen, twenty twenty three, So the
idea you thought of was after that? Too bad? If we were here
first time, stamp daan nights.Does that work for like copy copyright trademark
thing. I'm just gonna take apicture show when we're here. It's tell
Dagan Knights. I'm not sure todo with my hands. I just took
a picture I love. According tothis pictures right too, he was taking

(31:34):
a one. So now we justsee the picture show up against the audio.
We're like, look, see what'sreally happened here? As subscribed in
the picture, it's a picture ofYeah, exactly, this is awesome,
dude. I forgot how fun itwas doing this with you. I mean
I do remember because of the bathtap beers, but also we don't remember
because we got very drunk. Yeah, so it's like we know that it
was fun. We were a littleintoxicated, if you want specifics of how

(31:57):
it was fun. Besides we saidyou won't What number podcast was that go
back and listen. It was liketwenty yeah yeah, yeah, Like they
were like you can't be here thisarea, you can't be in this area.
We haven't roped off. And thenwe're like and I was like you
thinks, like yeah, go everywhere? What do you do me? Brian

(32:17):
and Russ Right, yeah, yeah, I love it. Yeah. We
were drinking before it started, andthen it just got weird. Yeah,
I mean that's not as we showup on like a Friday night. I
think we did Friday, right,Yeah, I had like eight o'clock.
We did it when they closed. We did it when they closed, so
we've got there. It was like, well it's Friday, let's go to
claim Snake and then they're closed,Like, well we've been here for two
hours now we're gonna do a podcast, you know. Yeah. And then

(32:40):
back then there were the longer podcasts, right, so yeah, having a
few beers on on there. Yeah, just like trying everything right. Very
responsible. I love it. Responsibledefinitely. Yeah, too late for light
rail which is really I should havethought about that, but camp out of
the Rancho parking lot. But that'sride. Wasn't that bad back then?
You know? No, no,no, there was no way. There's

(33:00):
a pretty melting. Speaking of beers, I should have should have planned this
out better, well, you knowI have some, Yeah, I have
got you. Gotta take it easyon the Death by Cats, Dude,
it's a it's a big beer.It's a point. It's a great freaking
beer. I mean it is superclean, West, super complex, realson
freestyle Nelson Mosaic Enigma, which fromAustralia, really cool hot from Australia.

(33:23):
Four packs. I do you sellfour packs? Okay? I just released
was it last week? So it'sfresh man, it's it's tasting really pretty
good. Andrew, you won somestuff recently, right, Yeah, Well,
I mean we're hoping this year.So GABF season is upon us,
and so we've been killing ourselves toget these beers set up in a package
shipped off and we find out nextSaturday is the award ceremony. But yeah,

(33:46):
last year we got lucky enough towin GABF Gold in the Juicy Hazy
Imperial Apa category, which was,of course, no competition. Yeah,
I mean there was, I meanjust a couple of entries looking three hundred
and seventy six centuries. Now yougot it, you got it. Yeah.
I'll say it's one of the mostentered categories and all the gabf it's
the most coveted. It's it wasreally cool to win that award. I

(34:07):
wasn't even there. I was atmy daughter's cheer football game. More important.
Oh yeah, I mean yeah,I'm a dad too, so I
got prioritize. But it was reallyreally cool. I was watching it on
my phone while you know, mydaughter was in thing down there. And
then uh, it gets the likethat that is the last category of the
entire show, and they stayed forthe last option of the most entered and

(34:30):
uh, I'm just sitting there watching, watching, watching, and my my
feed is a little bit delayed becauseI'm streaming it. And then I see
bronze and I'm like, okay, like we already passed the categories that I
expected, like that had good beersentered, and I'm like, hey,
if anything happens, it could havebeen one of these those all passed.
I'm just waiting for the homies toget awards at this point, and uh,
my phone starts blowing up immediately,Um Tommy Hampton from moving the first

(34:52):
one the text, but dude,I just non stop my phone exploded for
like three hours. I was freakingout. It was the It was the
most exciting experience I've ever had inmy life. And in my mind it's
like, all right, I canretire now, right, like, yeah,
that was the career high. That'swell, no, I can't financial
that's why I'm still here about yeah. Yeah. But just ultimately like that

(35:13):
was such a milestone mark and thatwas really really cool. So that's a
big gabf Gold and Juicy Hazy wasnuts. And as a selfish person,
I was like, I was therelast week and I opted not to get
it because I like, I don'twant a big beer right now, right
right, like no, now,I can't go back, It'll be gone.
And I was like, there's gonnabe a line, it's gonna be
crazy. I can't go back.I missed my window to have this beer.
Yeah, and I thought the beerwas really cool. I think it

(35:35):
was the hop structure was so uniquethat it stood out. I don't think
it was necessarily like the world's bestbeer. I think there was other beers
that were much better, but Ithink the Hot Combo was so unique that
it stood out. I mean prettygalaxy heavy, which you know that that
is appropriate for that style. Butuh Talus, which is kind of a
cool hop like a baby sabro, but more intensified fruit, so not the
coconut, the dilly thing. It'sa lot brighter than that. And then

(35:58):
five eight six, which Man andI love. Five eight six it's the
it's the new cool hop. Butwe'll see, we'll see if they name
it or keep it around or humbleAndrew that I'm used to. Yeah,
it probably wasn't the best beer.I think there's other beers that are better,
but I'm glad that we got thereare stood out in a sea of
things that tastes pretty similar. Ourswas a little bit, you know what,

(36:19):
we made the wrong beer at theright time. Yeah. I think
I think that's they know, judgingat GBF, especially Man, I think
that's how the fatigue has got tobe. The jague that similarity, Like
you're you're splitting hairs, right, and at that point it just becomes preference,
right, And like at some pointwhen you're like, yeah, these
are all good, but they allkind of taste the same. The fact
that one's got a little bit somethingdifferent going, yeah, it's going to
be the thing to change and Ithink, I think, I mean,

(36:40):
it was obviously a clean beer.It wouldn't get that far without being clean
beer. Yeah, so yeah, that was that was really really cool.
So this year we entered not thatsame beer, which maybe a mistake,
man me not, but this thiscroppy your Galaxy, I mean, Galaxy
has kind of been on a downtrend for a while. Yeah, it's
a sexy romantic hop. I thinkthe marketing sells it more than in quality.

(37:01):
But yeah, quality is definitely inthe beer if it's a sexy romantic
hop. Me owt no. Butthis year we have a new Zealand I
PA that's that's tasting really good, sold out our radio around here called doseph
Dopenus. Yeah that beer was reallyRewacca Nelson. Yeah, I don't know,

(37:21):
you know, it's such a crapshootdepending where you are in the flight.
But I know we say quality beers, so we'll just kind of wait
and see. I mean, youmake quality beers. I don't think there's
anybody that would. I'm a prettybig critic, you know. It's like
my analogies, Like I've built acouple of wood floors in our house,
you know, whatever else. I'vedone a lot of contructs around here.
And when you when you build something, especially at wood floor, you see

(37:43):
all the mistakes, see all thegaps, you're in miscuts. And that's
how beer is, you know, you see the mistakes because you're the one
putting it together. Yeah, sothat's all I can focus on, really,
is the mistakes where I guarantee youno one else is seeing that.
It's like the things I would tweakon the back end, right, it
would be like just a little bitbetter, one or two percent difference.
Yeah, yeah, at the endof the day. But it's still the
pursuit of perfection. Yeah, becausethere is no such thing. There is

(38:04):
no such things. I mean,it's it's a humbling industry because you get
great feedback right away. Uh andand it's send you do your own notes,
like I have some feedback for myself. Yeah, a little reality check
in the mint out here. What'sfunny. We we taste a lot of
our own beers quite often, butwe're actually starting a tasting panel, like
a sensory panel. Nice. They'repretty soon, which I'm really excited about
because it's just kind of unbiased youropinion of that beer that my fears always

(38:27):
go seller blind and so you're sofamiliar with your own beers that you think
everything's great, and I never wantthat, and I'm usually on the other
side, I'm like, got thisbeer ship, you know. Yeah,
but I'll an internet context the idiotsvideos and drink it up. So let's
put it on tap. They sayit's gonna be good. We should be
fine, right, Yeah, theseenthusiasts, they're enthusiast, they're not knowledgeable.
They'll drinks. But it went ofgold, so whatever, whatever.

(38:51):
Those judges don't know anything. Uhyeah, Google in our room don't know
anything, like you guys don't knowanything being drunk. Yeah, but it's
just knowing that there's like it's nota perfect beer. Yeah absolutely, that's
fine because there I mean, honestly, like you said, there's no perfect
beer. Yeah, you can getreally freaking close, but yeah, it's
uh, there's always something perfect beer. Honestly, perfect beer is the one

(39:14):
that you're you're having your hand.Yeah, you know. That's my that's
my saying whatever that if there's noif you're drinking a beer and you're just
not thinking about it and you're drinkingit, that's the perfect beer. Yeah.
If you have to be like,oh, there's something in here that's
in the way of me not thinkingabout it, then it's there's some flaw
there. Yeah, right, yeah, just drink ability, I think.
Yeah, I think at some pointwhere we all become huge critics, where

(39:36):
like getting into beer and you're likea big critic, like, oh,
you know that thing's got that, and then eventually just like I just enjoy
drinking the beer. Yeah, Ican tell you what's wrong with it,
but I don't feel the need tobecause that's not fun anymore. Right,
I was you become like there's apoint where you become like an asshole about
it. You're like, I don'tlike I don't like being an asshole.
I just want to just enjoy beerwith people. And if I want to
ask my opinion, I'll give it, but I don't want them to be

(39:58):
the thing. I'm here for goodenjoy a beer, right, Yeah.
And I'm on the same way.You know. It's like I'm finally to
a point now to where I'll takefirst like maybe five SIPs breaking the beer
down mentally. If I'm with somebodyin this with the same like mind,
then well we will talk about itfor the first maybe minute, and it's
like boom, gone, let's drink, you know, just hang out.
Yeah, do you want more ofit? Great, finish it. If

(40:19):
you don't more of it, we'llget the next One's right exactly. But
yeah, that's that's a big partof It's good. And I'm excited for
the beers that're coming out of here. The whole program, I mean,
Urban Roots has some of the bestloggers, if not the best loggers.
Yesterday's incredible. Yeah yeah. OctoberFest Yeah yeah, I had a gravity
keg explained to a person what thatwas is. Yeah, their new wet

(40:40):
hot beer. I just tasted thatnight too. It's so freaking good.
Yeah. So I'm excited to seetheir their check loggers come out. And
then we're doing a pink lemonade likestrawberry lemonade sour. Don't don't give out
the name yet, oh no,no, no, it's a secret.
Yeah, the hands come out andsee the cans come out. Yeah,

(41:01):
and of course you know you gotyou got two IPA producers that do well
for the other two, so crush. Yeah are they are they doing?
They're doing the West Coast. Ifeel like their water profile works so well
with West Coast beer. That onespot sacrament of IPA. It's all over
the place. And of course CrookedLane getting on the Hazy train was partly

(41:22):
you're doing. I mean, Ithink again they're like minded and maybe had
a little bit of influence there, but that one two punch was originally Yeah,
they make a ton of that beernow, yeah, which is really
really cool. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the whole story of that beer.
I think we both entered a prettybig competition statewide and uh we were

(41:42):
lucky enough to get best a Showof first place for a blondeal of all
things. Yeah, and then theygot second place. I forgot what it
was for, but it was whatwas that for? Was it their topple
box? I think it was, yeahuple box, Yeah, because they want
a gold a GPF that year.Yeah, and there and their loggers are
also really yeah. Oh they makelike the ruins you pick are ones I
would send anybody to, right, like, well, I just need to
go to one brewery and like, well, what part of Sacramento are you

(42:04):
going? I think anyone your Imean that one that we're going. They're
good breweries there. All this wantedto spread it out. I think I
did it. Yeah, I thinkeverybody's pretty happy. And yeah, region
like that where they are regionally,I think there's a lot of sense.
That was my that was my support, no matter where. It's not a
challenge. All right, I thinkwe've done enough facts. Yeah, we
gotta get a beer. It's quick, you gotta get a beer. But

(42:24):
first your mind. Everybody was goingon, see you fuck cancer? What's
going on? What's going on?Cancer? Twenty twenty three Every Saturday in
October ten seven at Urban Roots, ten fourteen at Flatland, ten twenty one
at Claim Steake, and ten twentyeight at Crooked Lane. Proceeds are going

(42:45):
back to All be Aware, whichis breast cancer Awareness for the greater Sacramento
area. And if you just wantedto donate to All be Aware, where
would you go without having to gothrough all these steps. Well, we're
gonna try to set something that I'mpretty sure it just I'll be aware do
Yeah it is as well, butI bet it I'll actually try to,
you know, set that up withthem so they know what's going on.
So hell yeah, yeah it'll beit'll be good. And if if people

(43:07):
are not already into the spe Facebookgroup, that Sacramento Beer Enthusiast Facebook group,
I highly recommend joining obviously, allall the information is going to be
on that page there. If youhave any other questions, hit up Steve.
Yeah you can. You can findus at Sacramento Beer Enthusiasts on Facebook.
My Instagram handle is Sack Beer.I've posted all my stuff there and

(43:27):
if you want to find me juston Facebook. I am Steve higher h
E y E R. And allthe information is on my personal page.
Two. Hell yeah it is anduh Andrew Flatland. We'll find out more
about what's going on here, whichyou guys are up to. Yeah,
Instagram is obviously the best point forus of this day. I mean,
yeah, algorithms still suck, butyou know, it is what it is.
So fire pictures are doing you Yeah, yeah, I bought a camera

(43:47):
and I'm like, I should startto do my on photos, which is
