Bear Talk is produced by the GoldenbergGazette Mount Juliet High School student newspaper.

(00:31):
Welcome back to bear Talk. I'myour host, Will Blackman, and today
we're going to be looking through MarchMadness, and then Bella Venima will take
you through bear Beats, and MalloryLying will finish us off with Flick Fix.
Then I'll be back with your weeklyannouncements. Let's take a look at
March Madness, one of my favoritetimes of the year. The top sixty

(00:53):
eight teams in the country compete forone NCAA championship. Every March Madness comes
with ups and downs, everyone fillingout brackets, everyone seeing a team that
you may have never heard of,winning two or three games in the tournament.
I love seeing teams that are nineseed, ten seed, eleven seed,
even twelve seeds go further than anyoneexpected them to go. That's where

(01:17):
I want to start first. Thecinderella teams, the underdog, the team
that may have just snuck in justbecause they won their conference and now they're
beaten big names like Tennessee or Purdueor teams like that. The first possible
Cinderella team that I want to lookat is ten seed Drake. They're playing

(01:38):
Washington State in the first round. They have Tucker Devrees on their team.
He's averaging twenty one point eight pointsper game this season. That's six in
the nation. That's incredible. Hisdad, Darien Devrees, might have a
little father son connection that boosts themto the next round. I want to
go back to twenty fifteen where RJHunter and his Ron Hunter fourteen seed Georgia

(02:01):
State. RJ Hunter hit a threein the closing seconds to send Baylor pack
and they were a three seed. And that's just that's given me that vibe
here where ten seed Drake takes onseven seed Washington State. Another underdog that
I think could go a long wayis New Mexico. They're an eleven seed,

(02:22):
but do not play like it.They have Jalen House. He's averaging
over twenty one points a game.In his last five, he's averaging around
that sixteen to seventeen point mark, but his last five he has been going
off. He is the son offormer NBA player Eddie House, so he
knows how to play basketball a littlebit. He's playing at New Mexico and

(02:42):
they can make a run. They'vegot six seeded Clemson here in the first
round, and I could see thembeating Clemson and then going on to beat
three seeded Baylor in the second round. Moving on to the South Region,
it's the eight seed in Nebraska Cornhuskerstaking on the nine seeded Texas A and
M. One player that really standsout in Nebraska Ksea Tomanaga. He is
really starting to heat up. Heis a lethal three point shooter. He

(03:02):
scored thirty points in a game earlierthis season against Michigan, and he averaged
over twenty three points a game inthe Big Ten tournament. He shot sixty
seven percent from three in that gameversus Michigan. So he's able to shoot
the ball and really could give TexasA and M problems and really could give
Houston problems if they make it tothe second round. The next team I
want to talk about is in cState. What a run for them.
They won five games in five daysin the AEC tournament. They were the
tenh seed in the ACC and defeatedfifteen seed Louisville, defeated seven seed Syracuse,

(03:28):
took down Duke, took down Virginia, and finally kept off the ACC
tournament. Championship with a win overNorth Carolina. One of my favorite players
on NC State. I call himBubba. His name is DJ Burns Junior.
He's averaging fifteen points a game inthe AEC tournament. He's really stepped
up his game. He was averagingless than thirteen points a game, and
now he's really going off. He'ssix nine, two hundred seventy five pounds,
but he can really move. Wherehe can take advantage of different teams

(03:52):
is when he's got the ball andhe's just bodying people in the post.
He's going to get double team, but he doesn't matter. He can pass
the ball extremely well. He hadseven assists in that championship game versus North
Carolina. So good luck double teamin h them, good luck not double
team in him. He can finda way to score or get someone else

(04:12):
to score either way. His teammateDJ Horn, who is averaging almost seventeen
points a game, and them whenthey are both on the court, man
they can make a deep run inMarch Madness. Their matchup against six seeded
Texas Tech and Texas Tech is ona roll as well. But NC State
could really make a run, andI wouldn't be surprised if they did so.

(04:36):
As we look over to the Midwestregion, we look at five seed
in Gonzaga versus twelve seed in McNeeseState. McNee Say is thirty and three
on the year. It doesn't matterwhat teams you're playing. Only losing three
games in an entire regular season isridiculous. Their head coach is Will Wade,
he used to coach at LSU,and their leading scorer Shahada Well,

(05:00):
he got twenty seven points per gamein the Southland Tournament and he's going to
be a key factor for them inupsetting Gonzaga and possibly upsetting Kansas in the
second round as well. I couldsee them going far in this tournament.

(05:20):
The last player I want to talkabout from these underdog teams could be the
most electric player in March madis DeronHolmes, the second He is the starting
guard for Dayton. He's averaging overtwenty points a game, over eight rebounds
a game, and they really couldmake a run. They're matched up with
ten seed in Nevada, and ifthey win that game, they'll go against

(05:43):
two seeds at Arizona. Arizona isa championship favorite and they could go all
the way, but Dayton could sendthem home packing early. Speaking of championship
favorites, let's look at the topfive championship favorites. So, as expected,
we've got all of our one seedshere, one seed Yukon the number

(06:05):
one overall seed in March Madness. We got number one North Carolina, number
one Houston, and number one perDue. We got a two seed sliding
in there, and it's probably notthe two seed that people expect. It's
Iowa State. Iowa State is comingoff of a Big Twelve Championship win.

(06:26):
They shocked a lot of people theybeat Houston in the Big Twelve Championship and
they haven't been higher than a sixseed in the past couple of years in
March Madness, So for them tobe a two seed and the fifth favorite
to win it all, one thingthat could end up biting them in the
butt is their lack of experience.Yes, they've been to the dance a

(06:46):
lot, but they've never been atwo seed, which also could come in
favor. They're having a record year. I've never seen them play this good,
and to beat Houston by as muchas they did in the Big Twelve
Championship just really proves a lot forthem. The last thing I want to
talk about here before I go arethe Player of the Year candidates. These
are the All Americans, the topfive players in the nation. First,

(07:09):
of course, it's Zach Eedy fromPurdue seven foot four, three hundred pounds.
He's averaging twenty four point four agame. He leads the nation in
scoring. He's averaging eleven point sevenrebounds a game. That's third in the
nation, and so obviously he doesn'twant to repeat what happened last season.
They got taken down by sixteen seedfairly Dickinson University. But this year's a

(07:31):
bounce back year for them. Theyfit all the categories to make a long
run in this tournament. Next tup, we have Dalton connect the transfer from
Northern Colorado, who is having acareer year. He's averaging over twenty one
points a game. The Tennessee standouthas brought them to a two seed in
the tournament, and he is theSEC Player of the Year. So he's

(07:55):
really turned Tennessee basketball round. Notsaying it was low to begin with,
but he's really boosted their season andthey have a big chance to make a
deep run. Although they are facingfifteen seeded Saint Peter's in the first round,
who made a historical run two yearsago, as they were the first
fifteen seed to ever make it tothe Elite eight. The third player on

(08:20):
this list is RJ. Davis fromNorth Carolina. He was kind of playing
behind Caleb Love a couple of yearsago when they went to their national championship
run, but since Caleb Love transferredto Arizona, he's really stepped up.
He's averaging twenty one point four agame. He led North Carolina to a

(08:41):
one seed and the NCAA Tournament, and they can make a long run.
They are the third favorite to winit all. The next player I want
to talk about is Jamal Sheed outof Houston. He has led them to
a one seed and they were topof the rankings for most of the season,
but falling in the Big Twelve Tournamentchampionship moved them down the list a

(09:03):
little bit. But he's just averagingover thirteen points a game, but six
point two assists per game that isseventeenth in the nation, and he knows
how to pass the ball. Thefinal player from these First Team All Americans
includes Tristan Newton from Yukon. He'saveraging over fifteen points a game, and

(09:24):
he's also averaging six assists per game, which is twenty second in the nation.
And Yukon's the number one team inthe nation. They're the number one
overall seed in March Madness. Isaid that before they easily can go all
the way. I think they havethe easiest path to the Sweet sixteen,
and then they'll be faced up witha really good Iowa State team if they

(09:45):
do meet in the Elite eight. As I close up here, I want
to give my prediction for who Ithink is going to win March Madness.
And they've been close every year. They've been a high seed every year,
and last year they were a oneseed. My pick is Hughes the Houston
Cougars I think will win. I'llbe back here next episode, so we'll
see if my prediction is right ornot. But they have great upside.

(10:11):
But like I said earlier, Nebraska'sgot a chance to knock him out in
the second round, so we'll seehow it plays out. I highly encourage
you to do a bracket of yourown, and please feel free to send
it to our Twitter or our Instagramat MJ underscore Bear Talk for a chance
at a shout out in the nextepisode. Now, I'm going to send

(10:31):
you over to Bella with Bear Beats. Hey guys, I'm Bella and welcome
back to Bear Beats. Today I'mgoing to be talking about another local rock
band called gloom Girl MFG. They'remade up of drummer Connor McCord, guitarist
Ethan Wagner, bassist Stefan Stableluski, and singer Paige mccannon. None of them
are traditional Nashville natives, but gloomGirl Mfg. Would not exist without Nashville

(10:52):
to connect the four artists. Thesefour are highly loved by Nashville, with
Mike Grimey Grimes, highly regarded coowner of The Basement East, describing Gloomgirl
Mfg as the future of national rockand roll and declaring that national needs gloom
Girl MFG so much. Gloom Girl, like Grimy introduced, is pioneering a
new age of punk and indie rockin Nashville. Funny enough, before that

(11:13):
official formation of the band, mcannonand m Court were beginning to collaborate with
plans to explore a sad folk genre, which is a stark contrast to the
resilient, passionate sound they exude today. They have a distinctly unique, fluid
style. This is no coincidence,as mccannon tells Spin Magazine about how she
does not want to be hold intoany particular one thing. Gloom Girl MFG
serves as a beacon of duality, tackling deep, heavy topics with their lyrics

(11:35):
with the intent of providing love andvulnerability in the face of gloom, allowing
them to easily connect and entertain theiraudiences. Gloom Girl MFG has been releasing
singles since twenty twenty two, releasingtheir first EP, a collection of almost
all of their previously released singles titledFactory in twenty twenty three. The name
Factory may be a play on theirband name, as MFG. In Gloomgirl,

(11:56):
MFG is said to stand for manufacturingjust something fun to think about anyways.
Factories track list includes Litterbug, MyBrother's Meds, I Hope She Knows,
and Side Stitch, Excluding their firsttwo singles, Boogie Girl and Part
Time Ghost. My two favorites fromthe EP are undoubtedly Litterbug and I Hope
She Knows. Litterbug is a darksong serving as a commentary on the curtain
state of our Earth and how it'sswallowed by pollution. Litterbug combines powerful,

(12:20):
heavy guitar with a rich bassline underneathmccannon's distinct vocals to create a unique,
sinister, almost sound. Maybe sinisteris a bit much, but they're able
to create this rich, heavy, gloomy sound that is just so beautiful and
very obviously passionate. You can reallytell just how much care goes into the
composition of their songs. This dedicationis not lost on national natives, and
it's not lost on me. Inother words, I think the song is

(12:43):
great. Gloom Girl MFG is ableto do punk rock beautifully and it's almost
captivating to listen to their music.Speaking of captivating, I'd like to argue
that my second favorite song of theirs, which is really my top favorite song
from theirs, I hope She Knowsdoes captivating better than any of their songs.
The songs start it's out a bitmore casual and laid back, with
slower guitar rifts and strung out vocals. However, as soon as the first

(13:05):
verse ends, the guitar picks up, leading to a powerful drum fill,
quickly transitioning into their known demanding sound. This pattern repeats through the second verse
and the chorus, with the moreupbeat sound lasting throughout the end of the
song. If you want to talkcaptivating, I mean the song literally draws
you in and traps you. Itis, in my opinion, one of
my favorite songs I've reviewed for thissegment. It's fun, it's rock,

(13:26):
it's easy to listen to, andit's easy to like while still having its
own unique elements. Perfect song toget someone hooked on Gloom Girl MFG.
Overall, I'd say Gloom Girl MFGis a great band and I'm so excited
to see what the future has instore for them. I've seen some sort
of teas on their Instagram, sonew music on the way that should be
fun. But if you're interested inhearing the music they've already released, I've

(13:46):
put their first EP, Factory inour Spotify playlist. You can find it
using the link in our Instagram bioat MJ underscore BEEO talk. That's all
I've got. Thank you so muchfor listening. And now here's Mallory talking
about making some movies. Hey everybody, welcome back to another segment of Flick
Fix. I haven't done a segmentin a while, and as I was

(14:09):
pondering, you know what movie amI going to talk about? What am
I going to talk about today?I was thinking, Yeah, I talk
about movies I like to watch alot. I talk about consuming media.
But you know what I haven't reallytalked about is how much I like to
make stuff and how much I liketo make things and direct things. So
I want to talk about something that'spretty relevant to me right now actually for

(14:31):
a number of reasons. A musicvideo that I directed with a lot of
my friends and just what that waslike, because I really love talking about
it. It's really cool to me. I mean, I'm very proud of
the end product, and just likethe process. I love talking about the
creative process of other people. SoI thought maybe it'd be kind of cool
to talk about other creative processes likemine. So I'm also here today with

(14:54):
someone who actually helped me with thevideo and was in it, So Bella,
Hey, I'm say hi, canyou tell me a little bit,
just because I've been wondering and Idon't think I really talked about this with
a lot of people who helped witha video, just like what it was
like, like, what was theexperience, Like, I feel like I

(15:16):
was worried about, you know, making the video with other people, just
like making that a comfortable environment foreveryone. Well, it definitely was.
Honestly, it was really, really, really fun. And those cookies that
you made were delicious, so Ilove those. But we literally just got
to hang out. We That's literallyall it was. It just felt like

(15:37):
hanging out with people and yeah,I'd like never met most of those people
before. They were also chill, and it was also fun. Went to
the park, went to little plotof land by your house, went in
your house, pretend to have aparty, like it was. It was
just a fun time. That's reallymy only thoughts on it. Had fun
and had fun helping you. Thankyou so much. It meant so much
to me that you were there, and like everybody was there. I feel

(16:00):
like I realized I got into thequestions without really explaining what the video is.
Yeah, why don't you tell usthe story behind the video? Godick,
Yeah, the video in itself.I storyboarded the concept for the video
my freshman year as a part ofan assignment for my AV one class,

(16:22):
and the song had just come outat the time. Clara is an artist
that I love so much, haveloved for many years, and her new
album came out in the song onMiba was the lead single, It's just
like it's a really special song, like I feel like the meaning behind it
means so much to so many people, especially me. I remember, and
I remember hearing it and be like, wow, I really feel like that.

(16:45):
And then I was trying to thinkof a video that I wanted to
make for pretty much for a fewmonths, and I got some really good
advice for my teacher who said thatI should think about what feeling do I
want to like invoke because I rememberbeing like I want to make something,
but I don't know what I wantto make, and he was like,

(17:06):
think about feelings that you feel recently, and like what feelings you want an
audience to feel, and then baseit off of that. And as I
was writing a list, I waslike, wow, this is kind of
the exact same as I was feelinglike freshman year, I should just do
that video and yeah, it wasreally cool. I didn't plan to be
like the person in it. Ijust kind of wanted to direct, and
then I ended up being in ittoo, which I think made it even

(17:27):
more special to me, and likeit is the first project I've like officially
made. So yeah, and it'sreally good, so good that I got
nominated for a national award with somebig long name that I don't remember,
student Emmy to the Academy. Youwant to talk about that, Sure I
can talk about that. WHOA,I'm wasn't expecting that I was. I

(17:51):
mean, I was excited about thenomination. Once again. My audioficial teacher,
mister Peach was like, you shouldsubmit this thing and this thing,
and I was like, I mean, okay, go for it. I
didn't really know what it was atthe time, but I was like,
sure that that's cool and it Imean, obviously the awards haven't happened yet.

(18:14):
I will be attending the ceremony andthat's really exciting even if I don't
win, Like I think it iscool to be there for this, and
I even a nomination for this isso big, like you should be so
proud of yourself. Well I didn'trealize. I was like, I don't
know if this is really a bigdeal of like I don't know if it
feels cool to be nominated it isa big deal, Like it's a whole
national award nation. I think anotherreason why it's like big to me or

(18:40):
like hard for me to grasp itis I remember finishing the video and like
hating it so much, like Ihated how it looked. I hated how
I looked in the video. Iwas like, this isn't good. And
as I've got more to terms withit to be like, okay, like
it's not as bad as I wasmaking it out to be. But you
know, I think it is reallycool, like how other people think the

(19:00):
thing is good even though I thinkit's bad, It is good. I
remember you literally wouldn't even show mebecause you're like, no, it's not
good, And I was like, you just spent months on this video.
There's no way it's not good.Like, well, I know you,
girl. I think it's it's naturalfor me to like have a hard time,
which, yeah, that is,it's natural for everybody to think like
what they're doing isn't good. Butand especially whenever I had to spend like

(19:23):
days editing it, and by editingit, I mean staring at my face
for like hours and hours, likeit makes you not want to watch it?
Yeah, no, I never then, but yeah, but yeah.
So on on the topic of thingsthat you don't like about it, what
was the hardest challenge about making it, like getting everybody together? Was it

(19:45):
something with the editing, Like, yeah, honestly, it was probably just
planning it, you know, andlike having the courage to reach out to
everybody and be like, hey,I need help with a thing like this
is a video that I can't doalone. I need people to be in
it. I remember putting that offfor quite some time just because I was

(20:07):
so nervous. Yeah, that makessense. Fun, but getting everybody together,
of course, I know, Ihad no reason to be nervous because
like, I don't know, Iwas like all my friends and they're like
so sweet and so awesome and mesyeah, I mean you're fine. I
guess that's whatever. But that wasprobably the hardest part. And I just

(20:30):
I love making stuff and that thatwas really the best part. I know
that's not what you asked, butoh I was about to ask it,
So tell me your favorite part.Yeah, just just the the process of
being in it and making it,and you know, it was a lot
of fun and just like seeing allthe things that I planned and like all
the storyboarding, like come to lifelike that was really cool. I thought

(20:51):
it was pretty cool. I lovemaking things. It was an amazing thing
to make. I shot about yourhouse and I was like, what is
all this equipment? Yeah, likesome like we like there was like a
red light and a blue light andI was like, I don't know what's
going on. I'm just an extrain the party scene. Like so it
is really impressive to me. Butyou were able to just do all that.

(21:11):
Thank you so much. You're sowelcome. Would have been made possible
without you and all my other friendswho were there, hooray, Because that's
another thing I love about making stuffis like a lot of the times it's
a team effort and I think it'scool to me the like kind of have
to work with people. Yeah, yeah, I just enjoyed it, And
thank you for tuning in. Thankyou for letting me join. Of course,
