Bear Talk is produced by the GoldenbergGazette Mount Juliet High School student newspaper.
(00:32):
Welcome back to bear Talk. I'myour host, Will Blackman, and today
I'm gonna be taking you through theend of March Madness and then I'll hand
you off to mister Judkins for announcements. First of all, I'm excited to
be back and to talk about somethingthat I love, which is March Madness.
And if you miss it, Yukonbeat Purdue on Monday to win the
(00:57):
national championship. They wont seventy fiveto six over Purdue. Tristan Newton was
named most Outstanding Player. He scoredtwenty points, had seven assists, and
five rebounds in that game. Andif you remember what I said from last
episode, he was named to thefirst team All American, So it's only
fitting that he be the most outstandingplayer in this game. Although Championship Night
(01:22):
is great, there's a lot ofthings that went into them getting to this
point. And there's a lot ofthings that happened that you might have missed
that happened throughout of all of MarchMadness. So that's what I'm moving into
right here. Let's look at thegreatest moments of March Madness this year.
First off, I want to startoff with number fourteen seeded Oakland beating Kentucky
(01:42):
in the first round. They beatthem eighty to seventy six with a huge
help from Jack Golkie. He hadten threes in that game. I was
almost an NCAA record, And Iwas sitting there watching it and I was
like, Wow, is Kentucky reallyabout to lose? And then his and
he wasn't the only player getting bucketsfor Oakland. Trey Townsend was balling out
(02:05):
as well. He scored thirty inthat second round matchup against NC State.
Usually see twelve seeds eleven seeds beatingteams in the first round with the upsets,
but never really a fourteen seed. And the fact that they went to
overtime in the second round with NCState and almost beat them, Just what
a story for them, and whata story for Greg Campy who's been a
(02:25):
coach at Oakland for forty years, and to finally you finally make the March
Madness tournament and then you win againsta world renowned organization of Kentucky. So
just that really blew my mind there. Let's I want to talk about the
Duke Blue Devils and one player inparticular. That player is Jared McCain.
(02:46):
In his game against James Madison,he hit eight threes and scored thirty,
sandwiching himself in between Kyrie Irving andZion Williamson as freshman records for Duke players
to score in a game. KyrieIrving had twenty eight. He was the
eventual number one overall pick in thedraft. Zion Williamson had thirty two in
(03:07):
a March Madness game. He wasthe eventual number one pick in the NBA
draft. So I don't think he'lldeclare, but he has a bright future
at Duke. He also scored thirtytwo in the Elite A game against NC
State, so he's really got abright future there. Moving on up to
Oregon, Jermaine Kuznard. He scoredforty points in that first round matchup against
(03:34):
South Carolina to boost them to victory. They were an eleven seed and upset
the number six seeds South Carolina.Just watching him move, just watching him
score, hitting buckets left and right, it just really blew me away.
And then the next round he goesand scores thirty two points and they did
lose to Creighton in the second round, but what a run for him.
He was only averaging just above sixteenpoints a game and then to go out
(03:54):
and score forty. That's an amazingway to make a statement that. As
we look into some other wild momentsthat happened in March Madness, I want
to look at the first round andyou see kJ Simpson from Colorado. He
hit a bucket with one point sevenseconds on the clock to beat Florida one
hundred and two to one hundred.Just such a high scoring game, and
(04:19):
they moved on to the second round. This last moment here has to be
one of the greatest Cinderella stories ofall time. It is eleven seed NC
State making the final four. Andyou might think that's great in itself.
Let's move back to before March Madnesseven happened. They were the tenth seed
(04:40):
in the ACC, not in thetournament in the ACC, in their own
conference, and had to win fivegames in five days, upsetting four teams
to win the ACC tournament, punchingtheir birth to March Madness. Beating six
seeded Texas Tech, beating fourteen she did Oakland, then beating two seeded
(05:01):
Marquette, which is where a lotof people had them out even if they
had them moving on to the Sweetsixteen. Then and then the biggest shocker
for them beating four seeded Duke inthe Elite eight to move on to the
Final four. They would eventually loseto one seeded Purdue, but what a
run for them. And as westay on that topic of NC State,
(05:24):
we move into the most electrifying playersof March Madness, and that starts with
DJ Burns Junior. I talked abouthim last episode. I said watch out
for him, and he was aproblem. He averaged over eighteen points a
game and he's not much of arebounding big. He is a passing big.
If you double team him, hewill find the open man. He
(05:46):
averaged three and a half assists agame in that tournament. You look at
him, you see, oh,only eighteen points per game. There's got
to be a bunch of other playersthat have had more than that. That
was just his average. He hadmultiple games of twenty five plus. He
had twenty nine in that ELLITEI eategame against Duke to send him to the
Final four. So he was aproblem all around. And as you could
(06:10):
tell from the last episode. I'veknown it for a long time. Now
I know this is not an unfamiliarname. It is zach Edy. He
was named the National Player of theYear for the second year in a row,
and he had an amazing March Madnessrun. They made it all the
way to the National Championship and thena but their run ended with an unfortunate
(06:31):
loss to Yukon. But he averagedtwenty nine and a half points per game
fourteen and a half rebounds per game, and they played six games. It's
not like he got lucky one ofthem and his average just went up.
They played six games and he averagedtwenty nine and a half points per game
and almost fifteen rebounds. That's that'sridiculous. And that was that was around
his averages for the year. Heaveraged almost twenty five in the regular season.
(06:57):
But he showed it right here whyhe won National Player of the Year
for the second year in a row. The final player on this list is
Dalton Connect from Tennessee. He's atransfer from Northern Colorado. He played lights
out. He had twenty six pointsper game six and a half rebounds per
game. He was a first teamAll American and a National Player of the
Year candidate, and these are justcrazy numbers. Like Zach Edy, he
(07:23):
averaged five more points in this tournamenta game than he usually does. Dalton
Connect averaged seven more points a gamethan he usually does. So Dalton Connect
averaged over five more points a gamethan he usually does. So it's really
I love March madness. I lovewhen these players get to just play out
of their minds and play like we'venever seen them before. And then these
(07:46):
players make a name for themselves thatwe've never heard before. So I get
on here and I talk about sports. I love sports, and this is
one of my favorite moments of theyear, and I'm so glad that I
got to get on here and talkabout that. That's all I have for
you today. Thank you so muchfor listening. Once again, I'm your
