Baratalk is produced by the Goldenberg Gazette,
(00:02):
Matt Julia High School student newspaper.
Hey everyone, welcome back to Baratalk.
I'm your host Sheldon.
(00:23):
And I'm your host, Jasmine.
In today's episode, we will be reviewing
this year's Halloween costumes we've seen so far.
So the first one I have is a Sailor costume.
I saw this one I thought a lot and I thought it was cute.
I feel like it's pretty easy to do this one,
which is like a navy top,
and then a white skirt or like pants and just a little sailor hat.
That's cute.
(00:44):
I haven't seen that, but I know what to say.
I had a couple of friends who wanted to do it.
And I thought it was so cute.
Like Sailor Moon or just like an actual sailor?
No, just like an actual sailor.
I was like at sea.
Okay, some one costume I really like is strawberries.
Like is strawberry shortcake?
I don't know if you ever seen that.
It's like strawberry shortcake in her friend.
There's like lemon, I don't know their names, but like you get the...
(01:07):
Do you know something funny?
I was strawberry shortcake two years ago.
I was strawberry shortcake when I was like a little child.
But anyways, I just like how they're like very different options
you can wear with that.
Like you never, you would have never guessed the options they put together
that they actually go well together.
Like the colors, the styles, the different patterns.
And I just like how it brings like the French groups together.
(01:30):
Yeah, I think it's such a cute fun, like friend group.
Yeah, I was that one girl who blasted that movie non-stop.
I love strawberry shortcake, because it's cute.
I thought it was cute.
Okay, so the next one I have is really funny.
And not everyone might get this one.
But I saw a lot of people on TikTok specifically.
No one in person, but on TikTok being Mr. Bubbinsky from Coraline.
(01:51):
And he's like this Russian guy.
And he's like a really funny character in the movie.
And I saw like so many people who were like fully blue,
like really committed to the character.
And I just thought it was so funny.
And I love a costume that's not just like you want to be good looking,
but you also just want to like bring a laugh to people.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like not like scary costumes that Halloween supposed to be.
(02:13):
Exactly.
Yeah, I saw him and it's like with a big belly and like my sash and all that.
Yeah, I know that was cute.
A costume I liked, a lot of people did it from here, from here.
A lot of people did it here at school during the Pepp Raleigh.
It was the subway surfers.
Yes.
The little guy that runs, I don't know his name is.
And the girl too, I saw the girl.
(02:35):
Okay, I saw the guys, but I just thought it was cute because you'd never guess that like people were so creative this year.
Like you would have never guessed to be like, hey, I want to be somebody from a like little video game.
Exactly.
It's mostly like scary costumes and all that, but just a thought that they like, like I'm gonna dress up as you know a video game.
Yeah, I thought it was cute and how they actually like kind of looked like it like with the whole red beanie and like that.
(03:00):
It was very exact.
The baggy look.
Yeah, I like that.
Okay, so the next one I have actually kind of goes off of what you're saying just then, which is like, especially on takes like I saw a lot of just memes.
Like, yeah.
They would take a meme and turn it into a costume like, you know, the picture of the Apple store monkey.
But I've seen that one a lot.
And then I've seen, do you know Chris Jinner?
(03:22):
Yeah.
And you like the gay Chris exactly.
Yeah.
I saw someone just say that.
I saw so many and I just thought they were so funny and creative.
Yeah.
Like I would have never thought of any of them.
Especially the one with, I don't know what it's called, with the bagels on his tail.
Oh, T-bow from my curly, from my curly.
Yeah, yeah.
I saw that one too.
I saw people at school with that one.
(03:43):
Yeah, I love that one.
That was really funny.
Yeah, I thought that was a good one.
Okay, my last costume that I think was probably the funniest is the Lorax.
I don't, is that his name?
The orange guy.
Yeah.
So I like, like even scrolling TikTok, you'll see like a normal video like at a football game or something.
And then like the camera panels to just like a group of like the Lorax.
(04:08):
Like there's just like a whole bunch of them for no reason at all.
And it's just so funny because like who would have thought to dress up as the Lorax?
And the thing is, the people that dress up as the Lorax, they don't just like dress up, walk around and get candy.
Like they actually like play the part, play the part, bring the character to life.
And it's like very funny just to see it all like happen.
(04:30):
Yeah.
I have two more.
The first one I'm going to go over quickly because I think everyone has seen this costume.
It's a little overdone.
But I think it's so classic and cute.
This year there was a lot of cheetahs or like leopards because leopard print and cheetah print have both really skyrocketed this year and been super popular.
Yeah.
So I saw a lot of them, but I just thought it was so cute and like the makeup that you could do with it was just so cute.
(04:51):
And then the last one I have is a very wide range of costumes, but was musical artists.
Like it could have been just like a classic album cover or like a music video.
Like I saw Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars from...
Really?
...died with a smile, their music video.
I saw that.
I saw like Lana Del Rey, Chapel Rhone, the weekend, like literally anyone, Sabrina Carpenter.
(05:14):
I saw it all.
And I think that is a really fun one that you can do and you can also do like a specific look that they had.
Yeah.
That was really famous.
It's kind of scary though because some of them look like that.
Like I remember I saw like a Sabrina Carpenter 2.0 and I was like, this is not Sabrina Carpenter but it looks like her.
Yeah.
They might be getting people coming up to them being like, yeah.
Oh my goodness.
Yeah.
(05:35):
I thought that was cute.
One person I did see a lot was Sabrina Carpenter and I think I saw like this one TikTok where it was like Sabrina Carpenter.
Like all the pop artists now.
Like I'm blinking.
Charlie X.
I saw a lot of Charlie X and choice of on too.
Yeah.
And then I saw a Chapel Rhone so it was a good costume.
(05:56):
And I almost did some of those.
I almost did the weekend.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And the last thing I have is just a few honorable mentions that I didn't really feel like going into but I just saw a video or two with them.
I just thought it was so funny or cute.
The cute one is Mermaids and then I saw the presidential candidates was actually a popular one I saw.
Um, chicken little which I thought was really funny.
Oh yeah.
(06:17):
I saw that.
And then I think this is very on-brand for this year but because the new Beetlejuice movie came out and the new Wicked movie is coming out.
I saw both of those a lot.
So people have wanted to dress up for them.
Yeah.
I saw a lot of Beetlejuice and Lydia costumes and it's very like how do they get the same dress that Lydia got?
They recreate it so well.
(06:39):
Yeah.
Like they have to be like the little bangs, the pointy bangs, the flowy like dress.
I just loved all of that.
And I love I can't wait to watch the Wicked movie.
But I just like how people are dressing up as the evil witch and the good witch.
I thought that was cute.
I'm so excited to see you.
I'm almost dragging me out to see it because she loves it so much.
(07:01):
I love you.
Taking off a work just to see it.
And now we have Katie with Sport Court, Maggie with Announcements, Lilian with a special segment on Hurricane Helene and Marina with a club highlight on Girls and STEM.
My name is Lilian Strand and I'm doing a special new segment on Hurricane Helene.
The Hurricane hit Tennessee on September 27th of this year and soon became the fourth deadliest hurricane in US history.
(07:26):
It caused many flash floods, mudslides, destroyed homes and over 200 people to unfortunately lose their lives.
As you all know, the heavy rainfall and floods caused many schools to close that following Friday to keep their students safe with their families.
And if you'd like to help those who have been affected by Hurricane Helene, visit the website, doing business with FEMA and they will give you steps on how to help.
(07:50):
And the thoughts are with those who are affected by that tragic, natural disaster.
Our thoughts are with those who are affected by that tragic, natural disaster.
Hey everyone, I'm your host, Marina and today I will be interviewing Sarah, deep one of the co-founders of Girls and STEM.
Hey guys.
I just had a couple questions for you today.
(08:12):
I'm excited.
Okay, so to start off can you just tell me a little more about yourself?
Okay, I'm a junior in high school. I'm the co-founder of Girls and STEM of course.
I'm interested into going into computer science.
I'm also part of many clubs like NHS, SNHS, YPC, OCSM. There's a lot more.
(08:33):
And how often does girls in STEM meet?
They meet every other Monday.
Sometimes we skip a Monday because we have a speaker and we want to take a break so then the...
like people can start thinking about their careers more.
Or we might have them back to back because that's whenever the speakers come,
(08:57):
but we always let our members know when.
And what gave you the idea to start Girls and STEM?
Okay, so me and my friend, Delay Gidose, she's the other co-founder and co-president of Girls and STEM.
We are both interested in the STEM field.
She's the more of the science part of it and more of the engineering and math part.
(09:19):
For Girls and STEM, what makes us kind of special from like other Girls and STEMs in school is like...
in other schools is we include medicine into ours.
So it's like Girls and STEM, double in.
And it's because most of biology in science is mostly incorporated into medicine.
So we were like, "Might as well, just include medicine for it."
(09:41):
And we always bring in speakers to talk about the different careers for other different clubs that I'm in.
And in church as well, like we would always bring in speakers to talk to us about career days.
I was like, "Well, sometimes it's just better to bring in all the girls in so then we can all just learn about ways for us to be more incorporated inside of the mill dominated careers that are in the world."
(10:07):
And what is the club's main goal?
The club's main goal is to help girls get more incorporated into the STEM field and to help them know more about the field.
So then they just don't go in there blindly.
(10:28):
So then like, if they want to go into science, if they want to become a doctor, but then they go into it.
And they just start hating their job.
I don't want that to ever happen to somebody because it would just feel like so much of a workload to be doing something that you don't want to do.
So to educate the girls about the careers we decided to make girls instead, of course.
(10:53):
And what academic opportunities does girls and STEM provide for the girls that join?
Okay, for the girls that join, we always have a requirement of creating a passion project while you are inside of the club.
This passion project, whenever put on a college application, it differentiates you from the other applicants.
(11:15):
It helps you look special.
And we also offer, we're going to start offering ACT prep and we are going to start recommending internships and programs for the girls to do over summer or fall.
Or winter break.
We are going to have more speakers and other people show up and come from all the types of fields that they could want.
(11:38):
And that could really differentiate a person.
If you go into a program about the career that you want, or if you make a passion project about the career that you want, it really shows the college that you're interested into it.
And you actually want to be it. You don't just want to go there for the money or because you're forced into it.
(12:02):
And last thing, is there any more information you want to share about girls and STEM?
Okay, so some more information is we meet inside of C-124, that's Miss Davis' room, the Health Science teacher. She's our sponsor.
If you guys are interested, we are always looking for new members and just show up, come. We will get everything else like the Club Fee and everything like that.
(12:28):
That could be figured out later, but just make sure you show up and you incorporate yourself as out of the club.
Thank you for coming today, of course.
That concludes our Club Highlight for this episode. And on our next episode, we will be interviewing OCSM.
