Speaker 1 (00:00):
Bear Talk is produced by the Goldenberg is at Manjulia
High School student newspaper.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Hi.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Everyone, welcome back to bart Talk. I'm your host Sheldon.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
And I'm your co host Katie, and today we.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Are joined with B and n's very own Delaney McCone
and Justin Garcia to help us out in a conversation
about topics and advice that we have for the younger classes.
As seniors, we feel it's our duty to maybe give
you guys some advice. Okay, I'll start, Okay, So my
first thing is like probably the biggest one that I have,

(00:46):
which is just get involved and try things out. I
feel like most people, once you get to senior year,
you kind of realize all the things you wish you
would have gotten involved with sooner or just gotten involved with.
And when I was a freshman, I was so scared
to join like a bunch of clubs. And now that
I'm a senior and I've joined things over the years,
I just can't help but think I wish I would
have started them sooner.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yeah, I would say, definitely try different things, because going
into high school, I thought that I wanted to work
in the health field, and then I realized once I
started taking those classes that that was not for me.
And I took my ABE one my sophomore year, and
I realized that is what I want to do for
the rest of my life. So definitely like connecting with

(01:28):
different people, also like getting involved with different people. I
feel like being N helped me do that. Like I
wouldn't be connected with Yearbook, I wouldn't know people in Yearbook,
I wouldn't know people in different clubs if I hadn't
joined BNN. So I feel like definitely reaching out of
your comfort zone and definitely being able to try new
things is really really important.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
And I feel like trying things out can't hurt you,
it can only help you. You know, if you try
something and it doesn't work out, then onto the next thing.
You know, high school's a really good time to try
stuff out.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yeah, because my freshman year I only had like I
was only involved with one club and that was Best Buddies.
And then as the years progressed, like I started joining
more and more, so I was able to meet a
lot more new people and meet new friends. And yes,
you may lose friends, but in reality, you'll find the
closest friends throughout your high school career. They come and go,
but it'll be fine in the end.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
That's a good point. Like meeting people through clubs is
also really helpful. The next topic I have is kind
of more for our juniors, and it's do not procrastinate college.
We're always told, like literally when we're in middle school
that we need to know what we're going to do
and all this stuff, which is not true. But it's
really smart to start thinking about colleges, colleges that are

(02:40):
close where you can go what you want to do.
And I waited to, like literally now to realize where
I wanted to go and realize what I wanted to do,
and it definitely stressed me out a little bit. So
when you're a junior, I think it's really helpful to
like start looking at colleges and exploring career paths.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
I would also say figuring out if if you want
to go to college. Not every kid is meant to
go to college, Like that is something that I learned
meeting like a lot of different people, Like some people
are not built for a classroom and that's okay, Like
that's totally fine. Just figuring out what is best for you,
what's gonna make you happy is completely fine. And if

(03:19):
that's not going to school, don't go to school. It's
not built for everybody.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
There's so many options taking gap years, trade schools, or
just working maybe family business, anything like that.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
And also going to visit colleges. Yes, it's so important
to know your atmosphere and we are going to spend
the rest of your four years, especially if you can
choose which college that would be, So go visit colleges.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, I didn't explore enough. I kind of went. I
went safety and that went kind of close. And I
wish I would have known what I was going to
do sooner so I could have explored what colleges are
like efficient in that career path.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
So, and it's okay to change your mind about things
like I thought, like when I went on college visits
for soccer, I realized that, like those were none of
the schools that I liked. And then when I started
looking at colleges not for soccer, I'm like, yeah, this
is definitely where I need to be.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
So that was Also college is not set in stone,
like you can change your majors for like literally anything
all the time.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
You go to a college for two years and go
somewhere else if you.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Exactly, you can always transfer.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
So then also with scholarships that you do you need
it at by scholarships way earlier in.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
The year that I didn't later, that's also really helpful.
And to also keep your mind on that what scholarships
you can get early, because if I would have been
aware of all the things I could have gotten, I
would have done them sooner. The next one is I
think something we all kind of probably struggle with as students,
which is keep good discipline, having a good schedule and
holding yourself accountable for your schoolwork and everything. It's only

(04:52):
going to set you up for the future. And when
I was a freshman, I like was so scared going
from middle school to high school and the workload is
completely different. You have all these classes, and so just
trying to hold yourself accountable and having a schedule of
when you're doing your work and making sure you're keeping
track of your clubs, your everything, like, it's just so
helpful and it makes you feel so much less stressed

(05:12):
all the time.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yeah, especially like when you do get old enough to
have like a job and do school and maybe you're
in an extracurricular like managing your time is going to
help you a lot, because I would sometimes find myself
like being stressed about homework and I would have a
game that night, and I would have to figure out, like, oh,

(05:34):
I need to get some of my work done before
my game before I can you know, have free time
or stuff like that. So it's definitely a big role
as you get older.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
And also make sure that you have friends, because life
isn't always about clubs, academics, sports, make sure you also
have time to hang out with your friends and spend
that time to yourself and not overbook yourself.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
It's super important, especially self care. Yeah, not like just
keeping a schedule with school. It's like keeping schedule with
your school, your work, your club's, your family, your friend life.
Just your personal time is a big one too. You
can't like not have any time to yourself. You need
that to like recuperate you exactly.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Like it could be overwhelming when you like overload yourself,
especially with a lot of stuff like you do. Having
friends and family there to support you would like be
very helpful.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
That really brings me to my next point, which is
have fun and do stuff with your friends, like hang
out with your friends as much as you can, you know,
take pictures, but also just like make the memories, and
you know that's the most important thing. And having specific
people around you can really make or break your attitude.
You know, if you have bad people around you, you
might not be enjoying your time and that can reflect

(06:44):
on your school work or just the people around you.
And so when you have surrounded yourself with good people,
it definitely like helps to get you other places.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
And you don't need a big group of people to like,
are you happy? You just need those close friends and
then that will get you through your year.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Oh, I would add I was going to add something
if you were done with you, yes, please add think
I was. I'm a big advocate for being kind to
others and making sure that you are giving them the
benefit of the doubt. You have no idea what's going
on in their life. And I feel like from my
freshman year, I learned that at big time, I lost

(07:25):
a friend group and I had to get out of
that friend group in order to be kind. I guess
because it was a tough situation, I realized that I
can't change it and I just need to go forward
being kind to others. I don't know what people's situations are.

(07:46):
That's I don't know. I feel like that's a big
thing for me.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
No, for sure. Also like that kind of feeds into
like the people you surround yourself with. If they are
people who aren't being kind to others and like that
that does reflect on Yeah, but that's like a bad
image on you. And also that might affect your just friends,
Like the people who you might be friends with who
aren't in your friend group might not like your friend group,

(08:10):
and if they're being mean to other people, then they
might not want to be your friend and things like that.
So you just want to make sure you're be cautious
and be kind to everyone and surround yourself with good
people who you know are trustworthy and can support you.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
And also don't be afraid to say, oh, this is
not the people that I want to surround myself with. Yes,
let me go out and adventure more people in my
class and meet new people and make my own new
friend group and just get to know other people and
know what you like in people and what you don't
like in people, because it's also important for college and
making friends, especially.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Like college is going to be another brand new time
to make a bunch of friends. So it's not necessarily
you're leaving your friends behind, but like you're just throughout
your life, you're going to have so many different friends
and it's charal and error which ones who are going
to support you and which ones aren't. So, do you guys,
have any other topics you want to add? Need my advice?

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Just stay true to yourself, honestly.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Very good.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Do very do what makes you happy, not what makes
other people happy or what they expect you to do.
Because you have a lot of different choices. And if
you have someone saying that you can't do this or
you shouldn't do that, like that's weird? Do it? Who cares?

Speaker 1 (09:28):
Yeah, that's another thing. Actually I'll add that, Yeah, don't
care what other people think that. It's probably like my
number one and in me in high school was caring
about every little thing. I was like, oh my gosh,
just my hair look good today? If I do this,
am I gonna sound silly? Like all this stuff? It
does not matter. Guess what I have not thought about
one person in my high school career that has said
something silly. You know what I'm saying. I've never thought

(09:48):
about the way someone's hair looked ever again, you know
what I'm saying, Like, it's just those things where you're
so nervous and you think that people are gonna judge you,
but it's just like in the long run, it does
not matter, and you should just do what you want
to do, wear the outfit, do your hair the way
you want to join the club, all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah, don't ever think it.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
Yeah, don't also overwhelm yourself with too many clubs because
just me, I gets.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Dropped out time too. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Also, just be kind to yourself, give yourself, grace, self,
love grain.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Crops, like, be proud about yourself.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
If you haven't gotten a year book yet, you're gonna
want to.
