I'm so excited you guys turning pain okay into purpose
and love into legacy. And now before we dive in,
let's take a moment to understand the cause behind today's conversation. So,

(00:52):
Crohn's and colitis are chronic conditions that cause inflammation in
the digestive track okay, leading to symptoms like pain, fatigue,
and weight loss.

Speaker 5 (01:05):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
Both conditions are types of inflammatory bowel disease or often
you'll hear it called IBD. While there's no cure yet,
support and awareness can make an incredible difference and the
lies of those who live with these diseases every day. Now,
my guest today knows this all too well.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
She's devoted. She's a devoted mom.

Speaker 4 (01:31):
A twenty one year veteran of the United States Postal Service.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Wait for it, yes, that's my special button.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
So she's been with the United States Postal Service for
twenty one years and the founder of the Andrew Derwick Foundation,
created and loving memory of her son. Now through her work,
she's helping others living with crones and colitis find strength,
support and hope. So please welcome my mail lady for

(02:10):
ten years, first time on Beauty in the Beach Radio
and inspiring people to truly turn loss into light. Please
welcome Charlene White.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
I just realized that rhymed. Hi Charlene, how are you good?

Speaker 5 (02:27):
How about yourself?

Speaker 4 (02:28):
Sending good It's so nice to see you not working
as mail Lady and being able to sit in.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
A cozy chair.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
I know you had the day off and I was
able to snag you and get you on the show today.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
So thank you for being here.

Speaker 5 (02:40):
Thank you very much for having me.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
Absolutely so, this is a it's a deep subject, but
I love how you are turning it into a positive.
But let's start from the beginning. So let's talk about
your son Andrew. First of all, tell us about your son.
Tell us about who.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
He was, what was he like?

Speaker 4 (02:59):
You were sharing a few things before we went on air,
some really neat special things that his friends, you know,
had said about him. But what was your friend, your
son like, and what inspired you to start the Andrew
Jorick Foundation.

Speaker 6 (03:14):
First of all, anybody who knew Andrew, he was a
joke jokester, and he loved having fun. Halloween was his
favorite holiday. So we really do our house upright.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
And Cindy just put on our screen you had a
fundraiser and has all kinds of Halloween. So that is
part of a kind of a tribute to your son.

Speaker 6 (03:40):
Yes, that was a raffle that we raffled off at
the bullathon, Okay, And it just happened that I found
something and I just thought it would be creative.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
I love it. I love it. So he was a jokester.
Tell us more about him.

Speaker 6 (03:55):
Unfortunately, in twenty fifteen he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and.

Speaker 5 (04:01):
He had a lot of pain.

Speaker 6 (04:03):
He got to the point where he couldn't finish college,
he couldn't work anymore. He was home bound. I was
taken him to Mayo and Jacksonville. The doctor said at
the point that if you wanted a better life, that

(04:24):
to have your call and remove would probably be the best.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
And he thought about it and he came to.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
His conclusion that that would be so in May, I'm sorry,
March of twenty twenty, he did have his call and removed.
He was down to one hundred and twenty pounds at
that point, and after the surgery he was doing wonderful
and he went to about one hundred and eighty five pounds.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Wonderful.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
The picture that you see.

Speaker 6 (04:57):
On the screen with the car screen with the car, yes,
is his twenty seventh birthday.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
Wow, his last birthday. Wow.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
And he looks very healthy there.

Speaker 5 (05:09):
Yes. Yeah, you can't even tell that he actually has.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
The bag, right right. That's so cool?

Speaker 4 (05:17):
So okay, So unfortunately he has he's passed away.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
It was not from chrome from chrones, right correct.

Speaker 6 (05:27):
About sixteen months after he had his surgeries, he was
killed in a hit and run car accident.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Wow. Wow. And I know this was hard for you,
but you really wanted to focus on how you can
make your son's life positive and impact other people. So
tell us about the foundation. So what inspired you?

Speaker 5 (05:52):
Did you?

Speaker 4 (05:54):
What inspired you to develop this Foundation for People with
crones and Colitis.

Speaker 6 (06:00):
Brother Anthony and I decided to form a foundation to
help those with crones and colitis with their financial assistance
and also to help find a cure. But our main
thing is we want to help those that are struggling financially.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
And you had mentioned off air that your son kind
of confessed to you at one point that you know,
he was so lucky to be able to be on
your insurance and have all the medical paid for, but
what if what if he didn't have that, how would
he pay for all this medical So that was part
of your inspiration. Is that right for you to have
the funds for future people with this disease?

Speaker 5 (06:44):
That's correct. We definitely wanted to help those with assistants.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
Wow. So you know who can benefit from this foundation
from the programs and services that you have.

Speaker 6 (07:00):
We have on our website we have a button versus
either donate or to apply for assistance. So if you
have crones or colitis and you need assistance, that could
be from any kind of medical bills that insurance doesn't pay, deductibles,

(07:26):
just anything that comes with the course of having that
medical issue condition.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Wow, Okay, so it's pretty broad.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
You're you're really opening up to anybody that's really affected. Yeah,
that that needs that assistance. Wow, that's incredible. So okay,
so you know, let's talk about getting involved. How how
can people apply for help? I know you mentioned a button.
How can they get involved or support your fundraisers?

Speaker 6 (07:58):
What they can do is go on our website and
we have a donate button if you would like to
donate any little or.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
Or a lot.

Speaker 6 (08:08):
Whatever you can do will go a long way to
help us to keep our mission going. And if you
are somebody who actually needs the assistance, you can put
on the button for assistance and it will pop up
and it will give you all the instructions of what
to do.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Wow, that is incredible.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
Do you.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
How many fundraisers do you do?

Speaker 4 (08:34):
Do you just kind of doing sporadically or how do
you get inspired with your fundraisers?

Speaker 5 (08:38):
We have two main ones right now.

Speaker 6 (08:42):
It's a Bolathon which is always in July, and Top Golf,
which is in Miami Gardens in February.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
Oh my gosh, that's fantastic.

Speaker 5 (08:55):
I love that.

Speaker 4 (08:57):
Okay, So you know, how could our listeners right now
that are listening, maybe some have crones and colitis and
maybe some have a brother or a sister or a
cousin and they want to help. What are the best
ways people can get a hold of you be a

(09:18):
part of your mission. What's the best way?

Speaker 6 (09:20):
The best way is they can contact us by email,
on social media, if you can put our information on
your Facebook page, Instagram, anything. Talk to your community. If
you might know somebody that has crones and colitis, you know,
let them know about us, because not everybody knows necessary

(09:45):
we're here.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
So this is what it's all.

Speaker 6 (09:47):
About, to let everybody know we are here. We're not
just here to talk about money, you know, what will
help us get our mission done or to help people.
We want the crones and Collise people to know that
they're not alone that you know.

Speaker 5 (10:03):
Yes, money is a big part because it's very.

Speaker 6 (10:06):
Expensive like everything else, the cost of you know, getting medications,
you know, which we also help. So this way, if
everybody can get on our Facebook page, if they can
follow us, let everybody know. If they know a business,
you know, then say hey, you know, can you help them?

Speaker 5 (10:28):
That would be great.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
You know, I'm sorry, I forgot what was it twenty fifteen?

Speaker 4 (10:33):
He was diagnosed Yes, okay, so you saw him for
maybe what seven years, go through this disease. Yes, So
as a mom, what would you say to moms out
there that are listening that have children with colitis or cruns?
What would you say to them? What kind of advice
would you give them?

Speaker 6 (10:55):
Only thing you can do is just support them, be there,
listen to them. The worst thing I guess you can
say is I know how you feel, because you really
don't know how they feel, because it's the pain is
just you can't understand the pain that they go through.

(11:16):
And especially if you have severe crones, that's just a
whole different ballgame. It's not like you know, having it
mild where you can actually go to work or go
to school. He had it to the point he was
homebound for years. So therefore he couldn't finish college, you know,
he couldn't work anymore, and all he could do was

(11:39):
sit and read, you know, and he took his time
and learned about crones to acknowledge what was going on.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Sure, so that's was his way.

Speaker 6 (11:51):
Of getting involved with himself, to understand what was going on.
He had was on forums and spoke with other people
that had crones and colitis that were going through different stages,
and you know that is great. If you know anybody
that has crones or colitis, they definitely need to get

(12:12):
on those forums to talk with people because those are
the ones who really understand what you're going through. You
and I don't understand because everybody is different that has
the disease.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
So just so.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
Getting on those forums is really helpful to see other
people that are experiencing it. Where would these forums be?
Are they on social media like Facebook groups? Or where
would they find some of these support groups social media?

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Social media?

Speaker 4 (12:45):
Okay, I think I know the answer to this because
you kind of went there. But if your son were
here today and he could be on this microphone and
talk to the people out there that are suffering from
crones and colitis, what would he say to them?

Speaker 6 (13:00):
He would definitely probably not necessarily joke about it, but
with his smile, he would just say, learn about it,
and you know, do what you need to do and
just be there.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
I love that. I love that.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
And you were saying before we went on air that
because he was homebound, his friends would call him at
all in day or night just to get a great
advice or just to hear a positive word, that's amazing.

Speaker 6 (13:41):
Definitely, he told me that would and his friends told
me that people would call all night long because.

Speaker 5 (13:48):
They knew he would he would be awake. Yeah, so
if they.

Speaker 6 (13:52):
Had an issue, he would help them with their issue.
And I think his friends really meant remember that about him,
that he was always always there for them, even in
his lowest point.

Speaker 5 (14:06):
And you know, I want.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
To be clear, okay, because you were so positive, but
this is a very painful disease, and so it's remarkable
that I'm sure there was a lot of times he
did not feel good and yet he is still trying
to make his friends feel better.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
That's amazing.

Speaker 6 (14:24):
He definitely was hurting twenty four to seven with excrucinating pain.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
But that's the type of person he really truly was.
Wow that he always wanted to help everybody.

Speaker 6 (14:39):
So that is the main reason why his brother and
I formed the foundation, was because we know that that's
what he would want us to do. Yeah, and we
hope that we can help a lot of people. We
hope that with this broadcast, it will the awareness that

(15:01):
we are here and that please you know, contact us
and you know, let us help you and you're not alone.
That's the most important thing is we want to make
sure that you don't have to fight.

Speaker 5 (15:17):
This battle by yourself.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
Amen to that.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
I think Andrew is smiling at you and just just
thrilled about what you're doing. And of course Anthony is
on board helping you his brother, so really cool stuff.

We are talking about a pretty serious subject. It's crones
and colitis. It is a disease that's really pretty painful.
And Charlene White, she's established a foundation to her and
her son Anthony, to you know, take care of those
that in the future that have crones and colitis in

(20:32):
honor of her son Andrew.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
What are your final thoughts on this, Charlene.

Speaker 6 (20:40):
Andrew fought with such strength and optimism and that is
why we created the foundation to keep his spirit alive.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
I love that well. I think you're doing a fine job.

Speaker 4 (20:55):
I think Andrew would be thrilled to see everything that
you're doing to raise money so that if people have
any medical issues.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
That because it's got to be hard.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
Already they feel horrible and it's like then you have debt,
and so that if you can, you know, at least,
you know, eliminate that burden or help to carry a
little bit of that burden, it's got to be amazing.

Speaker 6 (21:18):
That's definitely what we are here to do is to
help those that feel like they're strapped.

Speaker 5 (21:27):
And need assistance.

Speaker 6 (21:29):
So we want to make sure that everybody knows that
we are here. We are here to help, and please
whatever you can do, if it's donate, sponsor whatever events.
You know, if you need assistance, you know, get on
our website and push that button and you know, open
it up and you know, do what it says, and you.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Know, ask for help and speaking to help.

Speaker 4 (21:55):
We have about a minute left and Cindy had a
great question on break Charlot. But for those that are
listening right now, going geez, you know, I have chronic
pain in my stomach or or what were your son's symptoms?
And how does someone find out whether or not they
have cronzorcrolitis.

Speaker 6 (22:14):
He was just living day by day and I guess
maybe he ate something that could have possibly triggered it.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
We really don't know what all happened.

Speaker 6 (22:25):
It's just he went to the doctor and he had
a colonoscopy and uh that's how we found out.

Speaker 4 (22:33):
Wow, how long was the in pain before he went
to the doctor and found out had an official diagnosis?

Speaker 3 (22:39):
How long was he in pain for?

Speaker 6 (22:42):
It's hard to tell because you know, being young, you
don't ride away say anything.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
Sure, but he's the guy, so like, I'm gonna just
bulldoze through it.

Speaker 6 (22:52):
Yeah, but it wasn't too far long because he was
hurting and he didn't feel good and you.

Speaker 3 (22:58):
Could probably tell like something's going on.

Speaker 6 (23:01):
Yeah, so he definitely so thank god for that. At
least we knew what we were dealing.

Speaker 4 (23:05):
With, right right, Well, I love what you're doing and
I think Andrew again would be thrilled. And I want
to make sure people know that you are a five
O one C three. Yes, So any type of donation
is is tax?

Speaker 3 (23:23):
What am I trying to say? Deductible?

Speaker 5 (23:26):
Thank you?

Speaker 4 (23:27):
So let's go over how they can find you. So
let's go over the website.

Speaker 6 (23:32):
Yes, go on the website Andrew Durik Foundation dot org.

Speaker 5 (23:37):

Speaker 6 (23:40):

to do. Hopefully we can get some donations to help
our mission, which is to help those with crones and colitis.
And if you are that person that needs assistance, you know,

(24:03):
please don't be scared, don't be worried that Oh my gosh.
You know, I don't want to beg for money. You're
not begging for money. We all are in that spot
where sometimes we need that help, and that is exactly
why we are here.
