Speaker 1 (00:01):
EGM Network.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
From Studio A in Sunny Florida. Welcome to Beauty and
the Beach Radio, where it's all about who's beautifying Vero Beach.
Today's show is brought to you by Dale Sawrence and
Real Estate. And here's your host and Glamour Girl makeup
artist Cindy Gets.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Hey, guys is the Cindy Gets.
Speaker 4 (00:29):
Welcome back to Beauty in the Beach Radio, where it's
all about.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
His beautifying Vera Beach. And Guys, I just want to
share something with you.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
So I'm at this birthday party, okay, and just this
past weekend, and I overhear a nurse talking to someone
whose dad just got a really bad sumburn while lobstering
in the keys, and she says, drink lots of water,
this nurse, And I'm thinking, wait, no, alo, no cold press.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
So you know, I'm like, what.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
About like a magical you know, after sunburn cream, you know,
And she's like, she looks at me and she says,
you know, the damage is already done. You have to
hydrate from within. Well that really stopped me in my trucks.
I'm like, huh, And That's when I thought, Okay, let's
dig into this. What else do I think I know
about sunburns? That might be totally wrong? All right, and
(01:25):
this is a big deal, Cindy. We live in Florida
and it's a subject we've not even covered, but it's huge.
So today we're busting myths, confirming facts, and giving you
the real scoop you, guys, on how to help your
skin after a sunburn. And trust me, in Florida, this
is survival knowledge. So guys, let's just do sunburn one
(01:49):
oh one, Like, what exactly is a sunburn?
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Okay? So here you go, guys.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
When UV rays from the sun hit your skin, they
do two things.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Okay, are you ready?
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Number One, The UV rays damage DNA. That's right, you
heard me, your DNA inside your skin cells. The UVB
rays in particular, you got A and B. But the
ones that are the penetrating are the UVB rays are
energetic enough, okay, to damage the DNA in your skin
(02:23):
cells directly. This really is kind of scary when you
break it down to science.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Right, it really is. Yeah, who would think that, right?
Speaker 4 (02:31):
So think of it as your skin's blueprint. Your DNA
getting scratched or smudged, all right, when it gets sunburned.
That's how you have to think of it, that your
blueprint is getting all smudged up or scratched up or
damaged when you get a sunburn.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
So, yes.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
And the other thing is is, and they say this
so many times, that the largest organ in your body
is your skin. Yeah, so look at all the DNA
you're impacting if you're doing this.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Amen, Cindy.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
So the second thing, so the sunburn is one damaging
the DNA. Yes, you heard me right, I'm not over exaggerating.
Two Okay, the UV rays trigger and immune response. Okay,
your body senses the damage all right and sounds the
alarm woo woop, calling immune cells to the area to
(03:22):
repair the injury. That immune response equals inflammation. I know
you know what I'm talking about. You've had that sunburn,
and then before you know it, your your arm starts
to swell, your ankle starts to swell, your feet start
to puff up right from the sunburn. Yes, so, because
it's essential. Radiation basically is radiation damage.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
The skin cells.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
May die off, peel away, and be replaced with new cells.
So once this happens, you guys, once you've got that sunburn,
it's about healing, not reversing. So when your all day
beach and sunburn creates radiation damage to your skin cells,
your body responds by sending blood to the to heal it,
(04:07):
which is why you look beat red.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Oh wow, yep.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Skin can keep getting redder for up to twenty four
hours after you're out of the sude, Cindy.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
I know this has happened to you. It certainly has
happened to me.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
Where you've been at the beach, you've been outside at
a sports event and.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
You got a little.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Pink, but you're like, oh, I escaped really getting a
bad sunburn? I think of okay, and the next morning
you wake up and you are beat red.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Have you ever had that happen that delayed?
Speaker 5 (04:39):
Like oh crap, especially like you back are something that's
usually not your arms.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Maybe not so much.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
I've done that, but my back and my legs are legs.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
And I have my nephew and his wife from Virginia
and she's from Connecticut. God bless her super white skin.
You can feature it right, Cindy. They came to visit
me for a few days here in Florida, and they
got so red and what was really awful.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
And people forget to do their feet because you're walking
in the sand, you're walking in the water. Well, if you.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Don't put that sunscreen on your feet, oh, their their
feet got so swollen, red blistered.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
It was terrible, I really felt. But I then you
can't wear shoes, so I didn't think about that too,
your feet. Yeah yeah, yeah wow.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Because you you know, typically what happens you get to
the beach, You've already got your feet and the sand
well now sands on it, so you really don't want
to be putting lotion on your feet. So typically the
feet do get neglected. So uh yeah, so we all
you know, I can't say we all, but certainly in Florida,
we we have experienced at least one day in our life.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
A good sunbird. Yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
So okay, So let's so, Cindy, we're gonna do a
little uh a little myth or factor myth. Okay, so
you're gonna help me with us fact or myth about
sunburnska Okay, Number one, Cindy, if you put alo on
right away, it stops the burn.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
Myth or fact, Well, from what you just said, it's
all of it is a myth. I mean I never
knew alo, honestly until I moved south. Oh, we've never
heard of it before.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Okay, so it's a Florida thing.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
I don't know if it's Florida, but I mean I
never really back in my day not to be that way.
That's what we did was sit outside and got the
darkest hand that we could.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
We didn't use sunscreen. There was no such thing as sunscreen.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
We actually did the opposite, to do whatever you could
to percolate yourself.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
We did, well, yeah we did. So you are correct.
It is a myth.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Alo sues but does not undo the damage. Okay, so
it may sue some of the swelling, but it's not
going to undo the damage.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
So number two myth or fact on sunburns, A base
tan protects you from burning.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
No, it doesn't very good. I know that for a fact.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
People feel that though they really think that that if
their skin is darker, they've got a bast hand.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
They're not going to burn.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
No, that you still can burn. I've had it happen
and I have darker skin.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Yeah, so you are correct, Cindy, that is a myth.
It's still uv damage. Damage is damage.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Okay. Number three Cindy.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Myth or fact only fair skin people get sunburned, No.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Myth. Yeah, total myth. Darker skin can burn as well.
Yeah it does.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
I know people that it's happened to, you know, ones
that I used to work with that had really really
dark skin, and I used to goof on him and say,
you know, I'd lift up their shirt sleeve or whatever
and say, Okay, here's the dark and.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
This is you know, me, not as dark, so you
definitely do. And they'd be like, no, no, no, that
doesn't I know. Yeah it does. Yeah it does. Yeah
it does. Oh that's so funny. Yeah yeah yeah, okay.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
Sunburn myth or fact Number four. Drinking water helps heal
a sunburn.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
I think drinking water here heals everything.
Speaker 5 (08:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Yeah, good answer, Cindy, And you're right, it is a fact.
Hydration does help skin repair. Like you said, our skin
is our largest organ and it absolutely loves water. So
whether you're in the sun or not, I think, is
Cindy's point, drink your water.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Yeah, yeah, but it does help. Yeah, it does help
all day long, all day long.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Number five fact or myth sunscreen once a day is enough.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
No, correct, Cindy, You're so smart. That is a myth.
You reapply every two hours. And in the ideal world, Okay,
I was going to say that I didn't know that
the time frame.
Speaker 6 (08:35):
I didn't know.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Yeah, in the ideal world.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
I mean if you're not you know, if you're out
in the boat for three hours and left the bottle,
that's fine.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Just when you can.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
If you're going to continue to stay out, just reload
it up when you can.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
But every two hours is ideal. Number six.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Cloudy days myth or fact cloudy days are safe.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Yeah, myth totally. It's some of the worst days. It
is because you don't feel it. Yeah, yeah, so yes,
that is a myth.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
Up to eighty percent of UV rays still get through.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
That's a lot of UV rays, Yeah, it is. It's
a lot of radiation.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
You know what. I think anytime you walk outside, that's it.
Not to be Debbie Downer, but I mean you always
even walking, like walking your dog, walking whatever, yard work,
it's all you're all out there.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Well, and another thing we kind of forget about because
you're talking about everywhere we get our cars. If your
left side, you know, can get a lot of sun
if you are the driver, your left side of your face,
your hand, your.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Arm, your leg, if your windows open.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
I believe in Asia, if I if I'm correct, they
actually wear gloves, especially when they're driving, so that they
don't get sun damage on their hands.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Oh that's a good thing to know.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
I mean it really it's it's smart. It is, it
really is because I I actually have a little dot
right here, and I believe that's from sun, you know,
on my hand, and that is on my left hand.
That's all my driver hand. So all right, So what
can help a sunburn? So we just talked about the
facts and the mist, but let's get to it. So
(10:10):
what helps a sunburn?
Speaker 5 (10:12):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (10:13):
So we already found out it's not just putting alo on.
As a kid, I thought that was the heel aw,
you put some aloe.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
On and you're gonna be good to go.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Well, no, that honestly is just to make you feel good,
but it doesn't actually speed up the process or help
the sunburn.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
So what helps one?
Speaker 4 (10:29):
We already discussed hydration, hydration, hydration, hydration, And that's what
the nurse was talking to the friend about with her
dad's sunburn. She said, he's got a hydrate and by
the way, the sunburn was real. It was already cracking
and peeling, you know the kind right, Cindy, where it's
just like layers of you kind of look like a reptile,
(10:49):
the skin is all peeled off.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
It's yeah, it was a bad bird. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
I've known people that have real My brother, younger brother
has really fair skin, and he would get it where
it's just blisters and stuff, and it just to look
at it, it's so sad.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Oh wow.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Yeah, you just know, without even knowing the facts, You're like,
this can't be good.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
So it hurts.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Yeah, So let's talk about hydration.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
You can obviously drink water. Coconut water is good, you guys, anything.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
With electrolyte, electrolyte drinks, so definitely hydrate that is key.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Not a soda, all right.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
And some of the electro like drinks you and I
have had the discussion have way too much sugar, and.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
You gotta be careful of that too, really do is.
This is not an endorsement, but I have switched to
Gatorade Fit. I did research it, and Gatorade Fit is
a low calorie electrolyte drink, but it doesn't have artificial
sugar like even though I used to drink Gatorade zero,
(11:56):
but it had the artificial sweetener which actually mess.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Up your body. So it's it's yeah. So the I
do like the getor ead fit.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
You know, that's another thing. We had it on another show.
The sunscreen. I get that, but then there was so
much information too, is some of them are bad, they're
not really the best. What's the information for that? I
mean there are more natural ones too.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
You know what.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
That is a great question, and I actually don't have
that cover, so we'll have to cover that in another show.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
But I mean, just be mindful too, Like if you
think just because you're putting on fifty or whatever it is,
it's the best thing. Be mindful of what the ingredients are.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
Yeah. Yeah, So so what helps the sunburn?
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Hydration? Cool the skin? A cool compress.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
Again, we're talking the day you've already done it, right,
so the sunburn is already there.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
A cool compress really does help.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
That's free They can, you know, pull out a bag
of frozen peas from your freezer, lay it on your
leg wherever.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Just something nice and cool. Moisturize Again, damage is done.
How you're gonna help it?
Speaker 4 (13:04):
You can use your alo Okay, that's just gonna soothe
the skin. Any type of unscented lotion will help the
prevent the pealing.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
So there you go. And then pain relief.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
Just a simple ibuprofen or as aspirin can help with
some of that inflammation. Of course you want to consult
with your doctor on that and then rest. Guys, I
don't need to tell you this. No further sun exposure
and tell you're healed. Let that skin heal. It will heal.
She's the nurse said, you know, and we know this
(13:39):
that we regenerate our skin. We're kind of like a snake,
you know, we keep slothing off the old and bringing
in the news. So she said it will regenerate itself.
So guys, you know, and maybe you're a fisherman or
maybe you're out all the time and that that turnaround
is hard. I get that, so wear clothing from head
to toe cover that.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
You know what.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
I was going to say two things, And it's interesting
that you got to talk with a nurse because I
find that fabulous information is I would treat it, call
me whatever. I'm not a doctor, I'm not a nurse
or anything like any other burn. I mean, that would
be a level whatever one or whatever the level, what
they would do for those kind of burns.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
What we just talked about, it's radiation. I mean, so
it is a serious it is You're right, Cindy, immediately.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
Whatever they do in the hospital or e R or
whatever for people to come in with burns. I mean,
I know there's different chemical types or whatever. But still,
and the other thing is that I see more and
more people do it, and I know people in my
family do it, or wear the UV clothes.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
The UV closer and the swimming UV clothes if you're
going to be out like a fisherman, or you're you're
a lifeguard someone, or you even are one of the
workers on the roads. Yes, were those And I'll sometimes
when I run the beach, I'll wear the SPF clothes,
I'll wear the tops. Yeah, because I it's it's hard
(15:04):
and it is cooling and it does protect the skin.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
So good point, Cindy.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
Yeah, yard work and all that stuff too, the same deal.
Wear are those kind of clothes.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Yeah. So so Cindy's actually ahead of me because we're
talking about no, No, that's okay.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
So the next one is prevention.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
So we just talked about what's going to help it
with a hydration moisturizing the rest, so preventing it. Use
SPA thirty plus and some of you may be up
to fifty.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
That's fine, but at the very least do a thirty.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
Okay, So wear that sunscreen, apply it fifteen to thirty
minutes before going outside.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Reapply every two hours.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
We already covered that, Cindy, already covered were hats you
peek the clothing with the sunscreen protection, sunglasses that's even huge,
by the way.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
And polarized. And you know what, I'm very bad at hats.
That's one thing. Yeah, I don't wear I love hats.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
I I wear ball caps all the time just so
it's protecting my face and my eyes. But yeah, and
avoid peak V hours. I know sometimes that's that's impossible
if you work outside, but if you've got to choice,
the peak hours for UV is ten am to four pm,
and lately I like to go run or walk in
(16:23):
the evenings and so it's definitely cooler, Cindy, and then
you're getting way less sun.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
So again, I understand.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
Some of your lifestyles are made for this perfect scenario,
but I just want you to know what is the
best If you have that choice.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
All right, you guys, We need to go to a
station break.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
We're talking about sun damage, sunburn and how to protect it.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
So stay with us, guys. We'll be right back.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Thank you for Ridals and More.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
All right, we are finishing it up with something that
is so huge in Florida and something I've never really
touched on, and that is sunburn. And as I started
the show, we were talking about, you know, gentlemen that
got a severe burn lobstering in the keys. And by
(21:00):
the way, the daughter did say Cindy that he never
wears sunscreen, which I know. I mean, there are those people,
but as we said, there are options.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
You can get those UV shirts.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Cindy, you were you're swimmer and you were just saying
you switched from a swimsuit to the UV shirts I did.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
I switched to them because I am not the world's
best at remembering or putting on sunscreen. And I said
enough already, you know with my I was back in
the day, you know, always getting a suntan, and now
I'm like, especially in Florida. But the other thing, too,
is the time frame that you're in. I'm not saying
that it's a good thing if you don't put sunscreen on,
it's not. But just be mindful of how long you've
(21:40):
been out there too.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Oh absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
I mean you can have fun in an hour or so,
but be mindful of, you know, the time well.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
And I was telling you too, I've switched to a
spray sunscreen because I don't know if this has ever
happened to you, It's happened to me where I try to,
let's say, put it on my back right right, and
then I get a sunburn and I basically have a
handprint back there from where I didn't get the sunscreen
smoothed in back there, Like you have this big giant
(22:10):
white spot. Have you ever had that where you're like
miss a part of the back of a leg and
it's just like you knew that's where your hand was
and you didn't rub it in, So I don't know.
I feel like the spray is a little easier to
kind of get to all those crazy crazy spots right.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
Plush your legs to the back of your legs. I
always forget that the top of your thighs. I forget this, yes,
I do, and even in the water. So I try
to swim at seven in the morning so I don't
have to really worry about that kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
But sometimes I go in the afternoon and I forget that.
Speaker 5 (22:38):
I mean, I was like, my arm got burnt, my
face got burnt a couple of days ago from just
being in the sun for whatever, fifteen twenty minutes in
the water. You think in the water you're not going
to get it, but I did.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
So back in the day.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
And I'm embarrassed to say this, but we're going to
be wrapping it up. When I first moved to Florida,
I'm from Virginia. When I first moved to Florida, Sindy,
my biggest goal I was very you know, aspiring whatever.
I wanted to see, what how big of a tan
line I could get?
Speaker 3 (23:07):
That to me was my biggest goal.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
So, you know, the darker my skin and the whiter
where my bikini was, I was thrilled. It was like
a badge of honor, you know, to have a great
tan line, like the little copper tan girl.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
You know, with a little white booty. I just wanted
the whiter my booty was.
Speaker 4 (23:25):
The more excited I was. But now I realized I
was just damaging. I was radiating my skin. But I
will say what I missed, Cindy. I missed the smell
of copper. What it was it?
Speaker 3 (23:37):
Copper tone? Yeah, yeah, yeah, gosh, yeah yeah yeah, that
coconut oil. It just it just was like it was
like vacation in a bottle.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
And you know, and we're both from up north, so
when I would spray that that meant vacation.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
I was on the beach, I was laying out. Gosh,
brings back good memories. I'm miss you can't do it
now you can, but you shouldn't. Let's well, that's true,
you shouldn't do it. Yeah, it was just smarter.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
But the clothes are cool. The clothes are cool. I
have I look like a surfer and it's it's I
love it.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
I actually had somebody stop me on the beach and said,
are you a lifeguard? I used to be. I guess
I could you still? Are you just still save the line?
I'm tired.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
Say that.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
I don't like You're not working today.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
Not working today, you guys, get your sunscreen, get your
your sunshirts, protect yourselves.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
We want to keep you around because we love you.
You guys, have a great day.
