Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome to Betting on the Inspiration Moments. I'm
your host, coach Lynn Austin, and today's episode is especially
close to my heart. It's a conversation inspired by messages
and reflections in my book Resilient Faith, Renewed Strength and Hope.
This episode features heartfelt perspectives and shares stories of faith, healing,
(00:26):
and the kind of resilience that shows up when we
lean into hope, especially in the face of life's unexpected challenges.
Whether you're seeking spiritual renewal, emotional strength, or simply a
moment of reflection, this conversation is here to remind you
that you are not alone and that with resilient faith,
(00:50):
we rise enjoy.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Welcome to the deep dive today. We're tackling this concept
of resilient faith right.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
We're drawing from Time two volumes essentially guidebooks for finding strength, hope, vision.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Purpose Exactly. It's not just about getting through things, but
really thriving.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
And what's great is they're very practical. They give you
actuable steps, things you can actually do.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah, it's about taking those ambitions you have, those goals
and kind of grounding them in something bigger.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Connecting them to a greater purpose.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
So our goal here is to pull out those practical insights,
those things that you, our listener, can use to navigate
daily life, pursue meaningful goals without feeling, you know, completely
overwhelmed by it.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
All sounds good. Where shall we start?
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Okay, let's dive into part one, renewing inner strength for
daily life. How do we build that foundation?
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Well, a really fundamental piece is rest and peace. It
sounds simple maybe, but it's crucial.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
You mean, like actually getting enough sleep.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
That's part of it, sure, but it goes deeper. Think
about Matthew eleven point two eight. Come to me, all
you who are weary, that invitation is about more than
just physical tiredness.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Right. Doctor Henry Cloud talks about this too, doesn't he
The importance of rest and renewal specifically in God exactly?
Speaker 3 (02:08):
He frames it as essential for our overall well being, spiritual, mental,
the whole picture. It's not a luxury.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
And you know, it's interesting how science kind of backs
this up. Health psychology like Brown and Ryan's work.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah, they link rest and mindfulness directly to better health outcomes.
It's tangible.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
So okay, what does this look like practically? How do
you do rest in peace.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Well, the sources suggest a few things. First, identify your stressors, like,
really figure out what's draining you.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Become a stress detective.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Okay. Then intentionally set aside time even just a little
bit for reflection, prayer, quiet task space, right and mindfulness practices.
Just focusing on your breath or being fully present in
one small activity it helps calm the mental chatter.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
It's about being intentional creating those moments of stillness. Yeah, okay,
So what about when bigger challenges hit, finding refuge strength
in trouble.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
This connects to Psalm nine point nine, the Lord as
a refuge a stronghold. It's about actively seeking that refuge
when things get tough, not.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Just waiting for the storm to pass, but finding shelter
in it.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Precisely, and Pargament's research really highlights how crucial our support
systems are for coping. Friends, family, faith, communities.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
And Koenig's work on the mental health benefits of faith itself.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yes, faith often acts as a buffer against stress and anxiety.
It provides real, measurable benefits.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
So it's both personal faith and community support working together exactly.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
The actions here are know who your support system, is
and then actually reach out when you need them, don't
go it alone.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
That takes courage, sometimes it does.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
And also dedicating time for prayer and scripture not as
a chore, but as a direct line to finding strength
and guidance.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Okay, moving on the outline mentions comfort through relationships and
divine love Isaiah sixty six point thirty three. That image
of a mother comforting her child.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
It's a beautiful image and it taps into something really fundamental,
our need for secure attachment. You see this in Shila
Walsh's work connecting with Bowlby's theory our.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Early experiences shape how we relate.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Later on, right, and the idea of divine love extends
that comfort. It offers this sense of unconditional acceptance, which
could be incredibly healing.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
So how do we cultivate that comfort?
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Identify those truly supportive relationships you have and consciously invest
time in them, quality.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Time, nurture those connections.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
And also reflect on times you've felt that divine comfort,
that sense of peace or presence. Acknowledging it, maybe even
writing it down strengthens that awareness.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Now fear it's universal. How does resilient faith address finding
strength and courage? When we're afraid. Isaiah forty one point
ten comes up.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Here, do not fear, for I am with you. It's
a powerful anchor, and this connects directly to resilience and
positive psychology. Like Seligmann's work, resilience isn't about not feeling fear.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's about bouncing back, finding strength despite the fear exactly.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Joel Ostein often talks about tapping into that inner strength
that faith provides when fear feels overwhelming.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
So it's our inner resources and our faith working together. Right.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Practically, this means first acknowledge the fear, name it, then
find a scripture or affirmation that speaks to it and
repeat it, and finally take small steps face the fear
in manageable ways, trusting in that.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Support small faith filled steps. Got next is an interesting
pairing joy and patience linked through prayer in Romans twelve
point twelve.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. The
link is that underlying hope and faith that helps us persevere.
Snyder's work shows how vital hope is for mental well being.
Hope is a motivator, a buffer, yes and Victor Frankel
in man Search for meaning. Showed how finding purpose even
an immense suffering, cultivates deep joy and patience.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Finding meaning sustains us. So how do we cultivate joy
and patience daily?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Actively look for small sources of joy and hope each
day a sunset the simple things practice patients Consciously remind
yourself challenges are often temporary and crucially dedicate consistent time
for prayer, connecting to that source of hope beyond circumstances.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Okay, Gratitude is next James one point one point seventeen,
Embracing gratitude for blessings.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Every good and perfect gift is from above. Research by
Emmons and McCullough shows gratitude has real benefits, less stress, better.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Mood, and anvols Camp's One Thousand Gifts really explores this,
doesn't it beautifully?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
The power of intentionally noticing and acknowledging blessings big and small.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
So practical ways to cultivate gratitude.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Start a gratitude journal. Just write down a few things daily.
It shifts your focus. Huh. Also verbally thank people and
just take moments to reflect on the good things and
give thanks, whatever your situation.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Conscious recognition Okay, Inevitably we face challenges. How does faith
help us overcome them? John sixteen point three to three
is referenced in the world.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
You will have tribulation, but take heart, I have overcome
the world. It's realistic, but ultimately hopeful. Koenig's research points
to faith buffering stress.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Right, and Joyce Meyer talks a lot about faith as
a tool for overcoming adversity exactly.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
It's about anchoring in that ultimate victory even when things
are hard now. So the actions bring your challenges to
God in prayer, Actively engage, reflect on past victories where
faith helps you build that confidence, and seek support from
your faith community.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Share the load, don't isolate, Okay? Next, living and loving
inspired by divine love first John four point one month.
We love because He first loved us.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
It highlights that our capacity to love flows from experiencing love,
especially God's unconditional love. Erickson's work on psychosocial development shows
how feeling loved is fundamental.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
And Chapman's five Love languages gives a practical framework for
expressing that love effectively.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Precisely, so, how do we live this out? Reflect on
your own experiences of God's love? Have you felt it?
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Make it tangible.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Then consciously look for ways to express kindness and love
to others, even small. Act instead he scripture on Divine
Love to deepen your understanding.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Okay, Trust and freedom through faith is next. Proverbs twenty
nine point twenty five. The snare of fearing what others
think versus trusting God.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yeah, that fear of man seeking approval, it can trap us.
Leary's research shows the negative impact of needing too much
social acceptance, and Rick Warren emphasizes prioritizing God's approval for
true freedom.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
So how do we escape that snare?
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Become aware of where you seek approval excessively identify those areas,
then challenge those thoughts with affirmations of God's love, and
practice acting on your convictions, even if you fear judgment.
Build that muscle of trust.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Step by step. Okay, belief in the face of obstacles
Luke one point thirty seven for nothing will be impossible
for God. That's a big statement.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
It really is. It challenges our limited view when things
seem hopeless. Bendura's work on self efficacy shows the power
of believing we can succeed.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
And Tony Robbins emphasizes belief for overcoming obstacles too.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Absolutely, so to cultivate this belief. When things look bleak,
identify the impossible challenge and bring it to God deliberately
in prayer. Okay, reflect on stories biblical or modern, of
God's power and impossible situations, and take small, concrete steps
forward fueled by that underlying faith.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Action matters, action fueled by belief. Got it then, rooting
confidence and growing in faith. Jeremiah seventeen. The analogy of
the tree planted by water.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
It's a powerful image of stability and resilience that comes
from trust in God. Like that tree, deep roots help
would stand drought and heat. Environmental psychology Caplin and Caplin
talks about stability being key for resilience too, and.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Charles Stanley often talks about deep rooted faith exactly.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
So, practically, reflect on where your trust feels shallow. Identify
faith building practices that work for you, prayer, scripture, community.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Service, things that resonate personally right, and.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Set achievable goals to incorporate those practices, consciously deepening those roots.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Okay. Last point in this section embracing grace with resilience
and peace Hebrews thirteen point twenty five.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Grace be with you all. It's simple but profound. Kristin
Nef's research on self compassion links strongly to this idea
of extending grace to ourselves.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
And Brene Brown talks about grace and vulnerability leading to
peace and resilience.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Yes, so how do we embrace grace? Reflect on times
you've received grace forgiveness, kindness, practice self compassion, treat yourself
kindly when you mess up.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Be as kind to ourselves as we are to friends.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Exactly, and consciously extend grace to others forgive, offer understanding,
recognize their struggles too.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
That covers a lot on inner strength. Let's shift to
part two, aligning ambition with divine purpose. First up is
writing the vision. Referencing Hubbakook two point two.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Write the vision, make it plain. It's a call for clarity,
taking those interaspirations and making them concrete, understandable like.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
A mission statement. Almost business strategists talk about this personal
development folks too.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Exactly. It provides focus. So the action steps are pray
and reflect to discern your vision, the one aligned with
God's purpose for you. Okay, then actually write it down,
make it tangible, and break it down into smart goals, specific, measurable, achievable, relevant,
time bound, and keep seeking God's guidance.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Making it concrete and actionable. Then the necessity of vision.
Citing Proverbs twenty nine point one eight from the kjav
where there is no vision, the people perish strong words,
very strong.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
It suggests aimlessness stagnation follow when there's no clear direction,
but a vision rooted in God's word brings fulfillment. Meaning.
Stephen Covey's begin with the end in mind fits here right.
So for us individually, reflect on areas where you lack vision,
develop vision statements for those areas, making sure they align
with biblical principles, and then crucially, implement daily practices that
(11:53):
support that vision. Make choices that move you forward.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Daily choices align with the vision. Okay. Ex diligence in
planning Proverbs twenty one point five. The plans the diligent
leads surely to abundance.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Vision isn't enough, right, It needs diligent effort in planning.
Luck In Latham's goal setting research shows clear goals need
clear action plans.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Brian Tracy talks about this too. Planning is foundational.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Absolutely, so to be more diligent, look at your current
planning habits. Where do you fall short? Then establish a
routine weekly daily planning, build the habit, and maybe find
an accountability partner, something to help you stay on track.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Good idea Okay? Then finding hope in God's plans Jeremiah
twenty nine point one one, a very well known verse.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Plans to prosper you, plans to give you hope and
a future. It's incredibly comforting, especially when things feel uncertain.
It reminds us there's a bigger plan. Max Locato often
writes about trusting God's good intentions.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
So how do we tap into that hope? Practically?
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Reflect on where you're clinging too tightly to your plans,
consciously choose to surrender them, trusting God's guidance. Read scriptures
about God's promises and faithfulness, Let go and trust, and
make sure your daily actions reflect that trust in a
larger good plan.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Okay. Balancing our plans with divine direction Proverbs sixteen point nine.
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord
establishes his steps.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
It's that balance between our planning and God's sovereignty. We
need to be thoughtful, proactive, but also open to God
redirecting us. Charles Stanley often speaks about seeking God's guidance
and everything.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
So how do we navigate that?
Speaker 3 (13:26):
Integrate prayer into your planning. Ask for guidance, not just blessings.
Be willing to adjust your course if you sense God
leading differently.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Just stay flexible and.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Reflect on past experiences where God redirected you. You let
that build your trust for the future.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Recognizing and following God's guidance is next Isaiah thirty point
twenty one. Hearing that voice saying this is a way
walk in it.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
It's a promise of guidance for those who are listening.
Black being kings. Experiencing God gives practical ways to discern
that leading.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
How do we get better at hearing that voice? It
often feels subtle.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Cultivate listening through prayer and meditation, create quiet space. It's
often not audible, but a sense a nudge alignment with
scripture or circumstances. Journally helps two track prayers guidance received,
see patterns and seek wise counsel from godly mentors. Get
objective perspective.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Multiple inputs. Okay, Trusting the Lord Proverbs three point five
to six seems foundational again.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Absolutely foundational.
It's about wholehearted reliance on God's wisdom, not our limited.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Understanding, letting go of the need to figure it all
out ourselves exactly.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
So, identify where you struggle to trust, Where do you
lean on your own understanding? Consciously acknowledge God and your
plans daily and study scriptures on His faithfulness and love
to build that trust.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Foundation living out our God given purpose Ephesians two point
simon we are in God's Handiwork, created to do good works.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
The powerful affirmation we're created intentionally masterpieces, designed for good
works God prepared for us. Rick Warren's purpose driven Life
explores this deeply.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
So discovering and living this.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Purpose, embrace your identity as God's handiwork with unique gifts.
Pray for guidance on what those good works are for
You could be service, vocation, creative acts, to be many things,
then look for daily opportunities to do them. Step into
that purpose.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Okay. Delighting in the Lord Psalm thirty seven point four.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you
the desires of your heart.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
It suggests that when our greatest joys in God our
desires naturally align with His will. John Piper writes extensively
on this finding our joy in God.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
So how do we cultivate that delight?
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Engage in activities that genuinely sport joy in connection with God?
For yous worship, nature, scripture, creativity. Reflect on your desires
how do they align with God's heart? And pursue those
godly desires, trusting He'll guide and fulfill them.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Seeking wise counsel Proverbs twenty point one eight Plans established
by counsel.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Right, especially for big things, Getting input from wise people
is crucial. It requires humility, recognizing we don't know everything.
Cloud and Townshend's work touches on this too.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
How do we incorporate this better?
Speaker 3 (16:08):
Identify wise respected people in your life. Regularly seek their perspective,
especially on big decisions. Be open to their.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Feedback, even if it's challenging.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
Right and reflect thoughtfully on the council you receive, discerning
how to apply it.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Pressing on towards goals Philippians three point one three fourteen
forgetting what's behind, straining forward.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
It's about releasing the past, focusing single mindedly on the
goal ahead. Perseverance Craig Roschel talks about maintaining momentum despite setbacks.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
How do we cultivate that persistent pressing on?
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Intentionally let go of past failures or baggage holding you back.
Define your God's centered goals clearly, keep them front and center,
and commit to perseverance. Develop strategies to overcome obstacles and
stay motivated.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Small steps consistently.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Exactly, finding renewed strength and waiting on God Isaiah forty
point three to one. Soaring like eagles, those who hope
in the Lord will renew their strength. Waiting here isn't passive,
It's hopeful reliance on God's timing and power. Swindle talks
about trusting God's grace and timing.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
How do we wait well and find that strength?
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Practice patience, quiet reflection, contemplative prayer, focusing on the present.
When weary, specifically ask God for renude strength, turn to
him and reflect on past times. His timing prove best.
Building trust for.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Now using God's word as a guide Psalm one nineteen
point one, Z five. Your word is a lamp, a light.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
It illustrates Scripture's practical power. It illuminates our path daily.
Timothy Keller often shows how scripture transforms our understanding.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
How do we make it a more active guide?
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Commit to daily reading and meditation even briefly, seek to
understand and apply it. Memorize key verses for guidance, and
use it as a lens for decisions and purpose.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Committing our work to the Lord Proverbs sixteen point three.
Committing work means plans get established.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
It's a promise in trust. Your efforts fully to go God,
and He provides stability and success. It's about complete surrender
to His wisdom.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
So practically, day to day, start.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
The day offering your work in plans to God in
prayer as for guidance. Check throughout the day, are my
actions aligned with His values? And cultivate trust that he'll
establish your plans according to his will.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Maintaining focus Proverbs four point two five twenty seven Looking
straight ahead, avoiding distractions.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Let your eyes look straight ahead, Do not turn to
the right or the left. It's about intentionality, discernment, avoiding
things that lead you stray. Covey also emphasizes focusing on
what's important.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
How do we stay focused amidst so many distractions?
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Identify your main distractions, Time wasters, negative influences develop strategies
to minimize them, cultivate focus, habits, clear priorities, breaking tasks down, mindfulness,
and regularly revisit your overall vision. Are your daily actions
still aligned with your long term goals?
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Good? Check in now into some really practical goal setting
spirit led smart goals right.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Taking that familiar smart framework, specific measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound,
and adding that spiritual focus.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
So not just read the Bible more, but something.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Concrete exactly like read one chapter of John each morning,
specific measurable for a month, time bound to understand Jesus better, relevant,
which feels doable, now achievable, all well, trusting God like
Proverbs three point five to six.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Says, bringing faith right into the goal structure. The suggestion
is to set one this week.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
Yeah, pick an area for spiritual growth or action, and
formulate one spirit led smart goal to focus on.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Okay, then aligning ambition with God's priorities, making sure our
goals match His values.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Provert sixteen point three again commit your work Ephesians three
point two, who encourages bold dream. God can do more
than we imagine. But Matthew six point three to three
tempers it seek first his kingdom.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
So big dreams, but checked against God's priorities. Building on
Christ is the foundation. Like First Corinthian says, prefisely.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
Bold faith, but rooted in his will. The pick an ambition,
prayerfully see how it aligns with God's priorities. Set one
God's center goal this week towards that alignment.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Got it finally a creative tool visualizing God's plan through
vision boards.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Yeah, vision boards can make goals tangible. Creating that visual
collage of images words that represent your aspirations, keeps them
front and center, motivates.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
You, and it clarifies what you really want. The outline
even suggests a vision board party.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
It does. Doing it with others can be really supportive,
sharing dreams, getting encouragement, aligning with God's purpose. Together, the
text give tips on hosting one.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Builds community around shared intentions.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Exactly, but you can do it alone too. Pray, reflect,
gather images, arrange them meaningfully, add personal touches. It can
even work for kids adapting it. The key is an
open heart, trusting the journey, being open to unexpected paths,
and maybe renewing the board periodically as things evolve. It's
about dreaming, praying, creating with faith.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
This has been an incredibly rich We've covered so much
on cultivating resilient faith, the inner work, the purposeful action.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
And they really do connect, don't they. The inner strength
fuels the purposeful action, and the purpose gives meaning and
resilience to the inner life.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Absolutely, so for you listening, we really encourage you to
maybe pick just one or two action ideas we discussed today,
something that resonated, and try implementing it this week. See
what happens.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Yeah, even a small step can make a difference, which
leads to a final thought. Maybe, how might bringing is
one small element of resilient faith into your daily routine,
maybe five minutes of quiet, an intentional moment of gratitude,
one tiny step towards a God centered goal. How might
that begin to reshape your daily experience and maybe even
your long term direction. Something to think about.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
I hope this conversation offered you a moment of clarity, encouragement,
or simply reminded you that you're not alone in your journey.
