Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well off of a weekend that has seen a couple
of championship fight wins for Oscar Corlazzo and Gabriella Fondora
on the same card. We're ready to recap that. We
also have an Australian welterweight eliminator fight for the IBF
to also recap, as well as some news and much more.
Hello there, Welcome into the Fight Preaching Night recap podcast.
(00:23):
I am the somewhat lucid host TJ Reeves. Our insider
is Big Dan Raphael, Fight Preaching Night, the Substack and
the newsletter. Good to be with you, my friend. Full disclosure,
I have been enthralled, engrossed in a dramatic Tampa Bay
Buccaneer victory on Sunday afternoon late over the New York Jets.
(00:43):
You have no love for them. You're a Giants guy
that improved the Bucks to three and zero. I was
the emergency fill in play by play guy on the broadcast,
So I have had an afternoon, my friend, although a
happy postgame show. The food tastes better the Hooters post
game show, by the way, after the win. Uh So,
now we come in here to talk some fights.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
How are you Hooters to sponsor the show.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Well, shure it, Chicken Wings, talk to you all all
of the above. We'll see if we can't make that happen.
It's the original wing joint after all. All right, how
you feeling here as it's a Sunday night into Monday
right now.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
But in a little while, when we're done taping this,
I'm gonna punish myself. Watching the Giants was going to
get ruined out of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
So let's getting.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Glutton for punishment on that front. Thank you for finding us,
however you've done so on the podcast feed, Apple Spreaker, Spotify,
five star ratings and reviews. Help us. You like what
you're hearing, please say so. It helps us in the algorithms.
Comment always on the stuff we're doing, including the YouTube page.
Go check out some nostalgia videos we've done on Sugar
Ray Leonard Tommy Hearns won. The anniversary was earlier in
(01:52):
the week and upcoming is the anniversary of Michael Spinks
and that's today, right, Michael Spinks and Larry Holmes on
the Upset by Michael Space. Dare I say forty years ago?
That that was forty years ago? That right at that man,
it's amazing. Go check him out on the YouTube page
and like and subscribe. There a lot of original content there.
(02:12):
Did we ever, we didn't rehearse this part. Did we
ever get confirmation on what we might be doing with
a guest and his new book out or are we
still trying? Do we even have any breadcrumbs? We're trying.
So I think something cool is coming on the pod feed,
so be subscribed. You'll get an alert, et cetera. If
there's something coming out, we'll promote it socially as well,
So engage with us. There, all of that out of
(02:34):
the way. When is a tow being thrown in? Not
enough for a stoppage? Let's talk about this with Oscar
Colazo's strawweight unified title defense as he fought Jason Vason
of the Philippines. All right, I have to say I
have seen a replay of the stoppage. I was not
watching the fight with everything going on. I am aware
(02:56):
from my Dan Rayhael substack. There's controversy, controversy even in
Vason's own corner about whether the tals should have been
thrown in. Referee Thomas Taylor stops the fight Dan fill
in the blanks and give us the inside.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
This was kind of crazy. I mean, this was the
main event of the Golden Boys show. He's back at
the Fantasy Springs in India where he won the first
title he won when he stopped Melvin Jerusalem. He's now
defending the title. He has since unified two of the belts,
hoping for unification, but he can't get those fights just yet.
So they've got him lined up. But as you mentioned,
Jason Vason from the Philippines who spaw some good guys.
(03:30):
His one loss coming into this fight was to Akui,
who had went on to win a flyway title. Tough,
tough fighter, so not a terrible matchup. And anyway, they're
putting on a good fight. This is a good, exciting, solid,
interesting fight. As they're going along, Colaso's winning, but Jason's
having his moments. He's laying in some sharp punches, he's
sitting them to the body. I mean, you know, it's
(03:51):
not the fight of the year, but it's you know,
it's a nice fight, we're saying, and I know Klaso
is winning, but the other guy's in the fight. He's
not been down, he's not been badly hurt, even though
he's been touched up a little bit, but he's also
landed some good shots on Colaso.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
And the the.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Round starts, this is uh, you know, they're in the
seventh round. Not a nothing earthshaking is happening, you know.
Kalasa West backed him up towards the ropes. He had
opened the around with a nice body shot. But this
is not in the one millionth you know, most damaging
type of round you've ever seen. There was just a
normal boxing around. Nothing's really happening. Guy's land punches all
(04:30):
the time, he lands a body shot. The guy backs
to the to the ropes, and then out of nowhere,
Thomas Taylor, who's the referee, turns around. I guess he
got they got his attention, and the vase in the
corner is resigning the fight, and you're like, what the
fuck is going on?
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
This this was I mean, look, I don't want to
be overly dramatic, but this was when when you first
see this, you're like, something must have happened. He must
have an injury, some some kind of signal. But I'm
telling you there was, so you don't want to like
jump to a conclusion or rush to a judgment you
want to, you know, you say, well that was unusual.
Let's see what the reason was. Well, as it turned out,
(05:08):
there was really no actual reason. When they interviewed Vassin afterwards,
it's going through a translator because he's speaking in his
native Filipino dialect and the translator is talking. He wasn't
even like that upset. He was basically saying, I respect
my corner. They thought I was groggy, but I wasn't.
He clearly wasn't.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
It just was. And I'm not.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Suggesting this is the case, but if you made the
leap and say, oh my god, they probably.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Had money on the round, I mean, I mean, give
me a break, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
But you wrote in your sub stack that one of
the cornermen was arguing with the one that threw the
towel and after the fight and one of the fight restarted.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Correct and you know, you know you can't do that.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
So they're talking to the referee, they're talking to one
of the commissioners or to the executive director whoever was
the official there on BEF in the ring for the commission.
And you know that's just in boxing, it's not how
it works. He's the referee, sees the towel, stop the fight,
fights over. Now, I'm not saying that Thomas Taylor didn't
do the right thing, because ninety nine times, at of
one hundred or nine hundred, ninety nine times out of
(06:08):
a thousand, the corner throws in the towel, you're gonna
stop the fight. But it is not without precedent that
a corner would throw in a towel and the referee
would say uh and not stop to fight. This was
the type of stoppage. And again I'm not criticizing Thomas Taylor.
I'm not it's a split second. Thomas Taylor, for my
money's the best referee in boxing. But it would not
have been outside of his purview to say no, no, no,
(06:30):
we're not stopping this fight. Because he's there, he sees
what's happening. He knows there's no real damage taking place.
And then, just to cite the most famous example years ago,
the fight in the UK, Michael could see this in
a fight and there's all kinds of craziness going on,
and guys are up and guys are down, and they're
trying to throw in the towel and the referee throws
(06:50):
the towel out of the ring and the guy that
they were trying to stop the fight for ends up
scoring a knockdown.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
So, I mean, stuff happens.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
So but he did elect to stop the fight and
it was inexplicable, and you know, the commentators on his
own Mannix and Sergio more I thought was gonna have
a true law.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
He lost his mind. I'm sure now the distinction that's important.
The referee is ultimately in charge. Here, follow up again
and clarify on that go ahead.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
No, the referee is the one that's got the final say.
I mean, you know, you've heard it a thousand times
when they stepped to the to the center of the ring,
or the rules interpreter on the television goes over. Only
the abcials. Only the referee can stop the fight. There
go Now, they'll usually take direction from the from the
corner and or the doctor or if you know the commissioner.
You know there says something. I mean, they're not immune
(07:37):
to that. They'll listen to what they have to say.
By the way, the famous fight that I'm thinking of
was the Master and Michael could see this in the
UK against Graham earl and the earl corner.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Throwing in the.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Towel was one of the wackiest things you'll ever see,
I suggested, and it was a tremendous battle. Go on on,
trust the YouTube and watch the fight. Ultimately can see
this one by a fifth round knockout, but they were
trying to stop the fight before that. It was one
of the weirdest things you've seen. But the point is
Klaso retains the title. He was happy. He you know,
in his post fight comments he said he felt like
(08:08):
it was a fine stoppage, but of course he's gonna
say that because he's the one that gets to victory
and retains the belt, both belts. And the thing about
Vasin that just is mind boggling is this is a
guy who's unlikely to get this type of opportunity again
in his career. He's in there fighting for two of
the world titles, a life changing opportunity. He's in the fight.
It's not like he's being completely destroyed or outclassed or
(08:29):
been down three times and cut or battered or anything
like that. This is a competitive fight.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
Now.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
On the scorecards, it turned out that Calasa was at
fifty nine to fifty five on all three carters. The
people whose opinions I saw on social media, Chris Mannix,
who was the unofficial scorer for his own my own scorecard,
we all had it a little bit closer. I had
a fifty eight to fifty six Mannix, I think at
at one point closer than that. But this was an
actual fight. And by the way, there's still half the
(08:56):
fight to go, because they stopped at early in around seven,
and you still got the remainder of the fight, so
you never know what can happen. And let me tell
you I Vasin was clipping him in the body, and
you know he did not like that. As they say,
who do so?
Speaker 1 (09:09):
All right, so Colaso, Colaso gets the win. You talk
to us in the preview mode, what's the likelihood that
he could get another built in a unification type situation
versus might he look to move up? Who knows? What's
your What did he say afterwards? What's you're inkling on
the future for Colosmal.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
He wants to do a unification and there's that means
there's two other belts out there, the WBC Belt, which
would mean a rematch with Melvin Jerusalem, where he defeated
the first time for the WBO title. After he defeated
Jerusalem for the WBO, Jerusalem a couple of fights later
went on and won the WBC title. He has a
title defense scheduled coming up that is supposed to take place.
That's a mandatory fight that he's going to do, so
(09:49):
obviously he'd have to get through that or end or
fight the winner of that match. So there's no no
guarantees that that could happen, you know, for different reasons.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
You know who that knows.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Although the good the one good thing about the way
that any of these fights with strawwaits. He's the guy
that can bring the money. There's not like gazillions of
dollars from Melvin Jerusalem fights. The other champion he's fighting
in October October twenty ninth in the Philippines, which is
where he's from. The other title holder in the IBF
is also, by coincidence, a Filipino Pedro To Duran. He
has a title defense that was just announced for October
(10:19):
twenty sixth against a fellow Filipino at named Christian ballin Nunn.
So they both have fights coming up, but they're not
there like in the next month or so. So the
guys who win those fights, whether it's the reigning title
holders or the guys that become the champion. I believe
that with Golden Boy having a nice TV deal with
his own and the strawweight division not commanding crazy money,
(10:40):
that any of those matches are possible. So I would
hope that Golden Boy would make a very concerted effort
to go get him one of those other titles, whether
it's a Jerusalem rematch, the guy who fights against Jerusalem
Tad Duran or the guy who if he loses, just
trying to make the fight is that strawweight there's no
other names like you do the unifications. At least he
gets some spice out of it. Maybe take him to
Poor Rica where he's from. He has yet to defend
(11:01):
the title, you know in Puerto Rico. He's fought in California.
His last fight before this one, he went to Mexico
and fought in Mexican a contender. So you know, the
guy is very talented, he's very exciting, and I'd like
to see him get the opportunity to be a unified
champion and or I should say undisputed champion in the
history of the straweight division, not the most popular division,
one that we talk about a whole lot, but because
(11:23):
he was in action this week and it's worthwhile and
he is a very exciting young fighter. There has never
been an undisputed champion in the straweight division. Now, the
division was created in nineteen eighty seven, so it's now
been obviously a very long time since the division has existed.
There have been a multitude of unifications over the course
of time, but never has there been an undisputed You know,
it was created during the three belt era, and nobody
(11:44):
ever became the three belt champion, certainly not in the
four belt era. You know, when you look at the
history of the division, the greatest fighters who ever participated
in that division in one championships. Are you talking about
guys who are in the Hall of Fame? Ravin Calderon
who was a recent inductee, Ricardo Finito Lopez who's probably
the greatest weight ever retired undefeated and soon after he
retires will be in the Hall of Fame, is Roman Chocolate,
(12:05):
Tito Gonzalaz. I mean that's the those are the class
of the division history. I mean, those are the types
of guys that we're talking about, So hopefully Klasa will
get that opportunity now, he said. He mentioned if he
doesn't get those types of fights, which is what he wants,
the suggestion was would he move up and wait two
weight classes from one oh five to one to twelve
to challenge his Golden Boys stablemate, the Mexican American Ricardo Sandoval,
(12:28):
who recently scored the big upset in Japan over Taraji
to win the unified title at flyweight. He was on
hand to receive his belt's. Oscar de la Hoye, his
promoter and obviously the co promoter of Colaso, was in
the ring, did a nice presentation to give him the
two belts. If you can't get to unification, I guess
that would be something interesting. There was also and they
(12:51):
didn't really mention this. I don't know if he wants
to fight his countryman. One of one hundred and eight
pounds title holders is Brene Santiago, who's also from Puerto Rico.
Maybe that would be a possibility. To me, it's a
no brainer. You go, you fucking make the strawweight unification
and at least, you know, let the guy try to
you know, and and the opponent get the opportunity for
some historical accomplishments, and beyond that, you know who the
(13:11):
heck knows. But uh, you know, he's a small guy.
I would think one hundred and twelve might be where
he matches out in terms of where you could fight effectively.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Maybe, But Kalaso does get the victory, all right. Co
feature fight Gabrielle.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Terrible stoppage by the way, just all yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
But I mean, you know, as you said, don't fault
Thomas Taylor on that, you're not.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
I don't fall t Taylor. I don't fought Vason. I
don't fall Palazzo, although I'd like to have seen Vason
maybe put up a little bit more of a complaint,
you know, because he wasn't hurt.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
He knows it. I mean, I don't know. I mean,
if there's ever grounds for firing your trainer right there?
All right.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Gabriella Fundoral wins and the co feature retains the undisputed
women's flyweight championship. We love her for activity, and she
had a basically it's fair to say, an overmatched opponent.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Here, give me more on this, yeah, I mean, this
was a complete mismatch from the opening belt, not her fault.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
Obviously she wins. She did her job.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Again, it's Alexis kabout to Kubiki, who was a late
replacement in terms of filling in for the Originally the
fight that was made was Fendora versus her WBA mandatory
challenger Eileen gryarant Garandino, but she did not get her
visa from Argentina in time, so Kubicki was pressed into service,
(14:20):
and she gave an effort, but and she was you know,
I'm not knocking her heart or her desire, but you know,
she stuck her her nose in there. But she got
just absolutely pummeled. I mean, this fight could have been
stopped a thousand times during the course of those one
sided seven rounds. And you remember, these women's fights are
two men around. So she took hollacious damage every round
from the first bell to the time the fight was
(14:40):
finally stopped. You know, even right before the fight was stopped,
as they entered the seventh round, the referee call the
time out to have the doctor take a look at her.
They let the fight go, and you know, within you know, earlier,
within a little bit into that round, she was unleashing that.
You know, Fendora was unleashing these tremendous flurries of combination
punches and just and rolling her head all over the place,
(15:01):
and just how to stop the fight, so complete and
absolute mismatch. She defends the undisputed title for the second time,
fifth overall title defense, and she won her first of
the belts. Look, she is a tremendous young fighter. She's
only twenty three years old. She is now seventeen to
zero with nine knockouts, and she's been knocking girls out
over the last fights, which is something you don't see
(15:22):
a ton of in women's boxing. She's bigger than all
of her opponents. She's stronger than all of her opponents.
She's quicker than her opponents. She's got a much longer
reach than most of her opponents. Because even think about this,
she's a flyweight one hundred and twelve pounds. She actually
weighed in as did her opponent, about one hundred and
ten in change, so she was well under the contract limit.
And as a flyweight, she's five foot nine, which is
(15:43):
very tall for that weight class period, So she towered
over her opponent similar to like when you watch her brother,
Sebastian Fandora, who towers over his opponents in the jymmor
middleweight division. She actually talked about the possibility of maybe
moving down in weight if she wants to win another
title in another weight class. So I feel like she
can go to one hundred and eight with not a
(16:05):
big problem and do what she needs to do there.
Certainly she could move up to the junior band and
weight division at some point, where right now she's not.
She's just coming into her own I mean, she's you know,
Oscar de la Hoya, who is her promoter, did an
interview about the fight and basically said, look, she's still learning,
she's still getting better. You know, two or three more
fights now, people are going to start talking about Gabrielle
Fandoras perhaps the number one pound four pound female boxer
(16:27):
in the world, because at some point, the top women
who are there right now, you're Claressa Shields and Katie
Taylor and Amanda Serrano and you know, Mikhaela Mayer and
you know Alicia Baumgarter. You know, they're all much older
than that. You know, they're into their thirties at this point.
So although they're still obviously outstanding fighters, they're not going
to be around forever, so eventually it's going to be
(16:47):
a younger like girl, woman who's in her twenties, who
may may be able to take over that position in
the not too distant future.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
And she definitely has been active, she's been delivering big wins.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
So I have to say, though as much entertainment value
as we have seen from some of the top women
more most notably Serrano and Taylor, for my money, I
think Gabrielle Fandora might be the most entertaining of the
female box there's a take no I mean, and Mikaela
makes good fights. She was in the Rumble Rumbles with
Sandy Ryan. I mean, I'm not saying she's the only
(17:19):
one that makes a good fight, But the thing that
separates Fondora for me compared to all these other outstanding
women is that she's knocking people out right and the
other ones they are much more sporadic in terms of
when they get knocked on. Like Katie Taylor is a
great fighter, but she's got like five knockouts and like
twenty plus wins, you know what I mean, So she's
not really scoring a lot of big knockouts, and Fondora
(17:41):
is putting hurt on these women. She's punishing them, and
that's more interesting to watch if you ask.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
Me, We're not blood thirsty, but yes, she's more not.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Blood thirsty but action. You know, she comes to bring it.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
Fill out the rest of the undercard, including the junior
welter Wade Abdolajev and his win and what else. Off
this undercard for the Golden Boys his zone show real quick.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
So you have the The Golden Boy signed a junior
walter eight named Rusalem Abdelive who was from Uzbekistan. He
trains with Joel Diaz, as do several of the Uzbekistan
fighters in southern California, so he sort of makes that
his second home, which is in the same region as India.
He was in Olympian in twenty twenty four. You know,
(18:21):
good pedigree obviously, So now he's three and oh and
you know he came with a lot of hype when
he came into the pros and he was in an
eight rounder against a club fighter level guy, but a
guy that's supposed to be having a lot of ability
but doesn't really show up as top notch when the
lights go on.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
If you know what I mean. Al he's known.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
This guy Kevin Johnson known is great in the gym,
but maybe not so much when the real fights happened.
So he fell to twelve and eight and abdlive. Although
he did not get the knockout, you know, he just
ran through the guy. He won basically a shout out.
He won a shout out in one sportcard eighty to
seventy two, seventy nine to seventy three, and the other two.
And he's a real prospect. I mean, he's a guy
to keep an eye on. It was an eight rounder,
like I said, only his third pro fight, and keep
(19:01):
an eye on him. He's got a good team behind him.
Golden Boy will give him a push. Joel Diaz is
a top trainer. He obviously has that background with the Olympics,
so he's definitely a got to keep an eye. He
was getting some good exposure on this card. And then
the other fight that was a prospectee that was interesting
was you have the welterweight from Bakersfield, California, Joel erie Arte,
who basically did everything as an amateur other than beyond
the Olympic team. He's been with Golden Boys since day one.
(19:22):
He's now nine to zero with eight knockouts. He scored
a third round knockout against his Mexican opponent and Wardo Hernandez.
He's definitely a prospect to keep an eye on. They're
bringing him along also, I mean, Golden Boy's got some
sneaky good prospects in their stable. Between those two guys,
they got Joshua Edwards, the heavyweight that's coming along, and others.
I mean, they don't get as much hype maybe as
some of the prospects that you see from Top Rank
(19:42):
or from match Room Boxing, or some of the Frank
Warren guys.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
But Golden Boy sneaky.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Gut guys and gals who are very solid fighters in
their stable. I'm not really sure why they don't get
that kind of hype, but they deserve it, you know,
at least as much as some of the other ones
we see get the hype.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
Well, you're propping them up here on the pod and
obviously on your sub stack. Okay, So there was one
other fight of significance and that his former IBF Junior
welterweight champ, Liam Parro in his home country of Australia
was victorious on Thursday night in Australia Thursday morning, US time.
As it turns out, all right, tell me more about
Paro's win and what does it mean in the welterweight
(20:18):
division one weight class up.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
Well, what it means is he because he wins this fight,
he's going to get a world title fight. He became
because this was an official IBF welterweight eliminator. He will
be the mandatory now for the newly crowned IBF champion,
which is Lewis Crocker, who obviously had won the vacant
title on the previous Saturday when he was in Belfast
against his Irish countrymen and got the upset split decision
(20:43):
against Patty Donovan in their rematch. So eventually, you know,
I don't think the mandatory is due just at the moment,
but eventually Paro will be in line to get that
mandatory against Crocker. But in terms of the fight that
he'd had, remember he lost his title to Sabrill Matias.
He did not look very good in that fight. He
has since won two fights, well, first one was a
little bit over the welterweight limit one hundred and forty
(21:03):
three or so pounds decided he's going to go to
welterweight officially and stay in that weight less. So this
was at the full fledged welterweight limit. You know, he
he is an IBF former champion. They gave him a
high ranking. So he was in this eliminator against a
French fighter, a fellow south pund named David Papou, who
was undefeated, who was like thirty and oh with a
draw going into the fight. And it was a close fight.
(21:25):
On the scorecards you had Paro winning one seventeen to
one eleven and one sixteen to one twelve twice. I
did see a lot of people who saw the fighter,
some of the Australian folks that like follow me on
social media who were like saying that it was they
thought that it was a lot closer, even though they
were rooting for their guy in Paro. But regardless, Paro
gets to win. He had to overcome a very badly
(21:47):
swollen right eye. He got caught with a nice right
hand and like the fourth round, fifth round something like that,
his eye just blew up. I saw some photos of
it too. It looked really gnarly. But he overcame that.
So at the end of the day he wins this
decision on the Nolan card that took place in Australia
in Brisbane, and now he's going to be into a
world championship fight and he'll have an opportunity to win
(22:09):
a title on a second division and we'll.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
See how that plays out.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
I have to say, I mean all respect to Lewis Crocker,
who was a huge underdog and got through and won
the fight against Patty Donovan. But if you're making Paro
versus Crocker like, there's no reason why Paro couldn't win
that fight and become a two division champion. It's not
like Crocker is the neck and coming of you know,
the the top welterweights we've seen in the past. He's
no Terrence Crawford or Errol Spence or Hoyo or it
(22:34):
would think whoever.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
You wouldn't think so, But stay tuned on whether that
fight happens after the Crocker he was a significant underdog
after his underdog win and won the title back before
all right, news, let's get to a little news here.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
News.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
A little Golden Boy did make an announcement on the
weekend here and talked about Oscar de la Hoya talked
about it more, I believe on the card Saturday Night
about the undercard of the upcoming Virgil Ortiz ericson lubin
November twenty eighth show tell us more about that place.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
So that main event, I think we can all agree,
is a really good main event. It's two of the
top guys one hundred and fifty four. They announced that
fight not that long ago, a very interesting match between
two quality guys in the division. Conversely, the co feature
that the announced is the exact opposite. It's everything you
don't want to see, unfortunately, you know, And I'm a
little disappointed because you know, I said on this podcast,
(23:26):
I've written it, I've said it many times. I feel
like Golden Boy puts on some of the best cards
in bo.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
You just you just said that you like the stable
of young fighters.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
They do it.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Then Oscar and these guys that they're flowers, yes, and
now what kind of toilet water do we have in the.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
Con This is just so disappointing. So Floyd Schofield, who's
obviously an up and coming lightweight contender, comes off his
biggest victory, scores a scorching first round knockout against Tevin
Farmer looked really good and in the aftermath of that
victory and over the last few weeks, there's been a
lot of conversation, uh that they were going to either
fight raymor Ataya for the IBF title. That was in discussions. Uh,
(24:03):
there was conversations that so that that perhaps perhaps that
would happen, which you know, that would be a good
a good fight. There was conversations that he would fight
the MVP contender, Lucas Body, who we know from having
that spectacular knockout against as Ashton Silv. He's won some
fights since then. He just recently won on the MVP
(24:23):
card in August that they had And so I'm like, okay,
if he fights Murtai for the title, that's interesting. He
fights Body, that's two good contenders against each other.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Like we got stake in baked potato on the first
one on the second when we got chicken dinner, but
instead they're going to give us a package of crackers.
I get the feeling.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Go ahead.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Now again, I'm not blaming. Maybe maybe they just couldn't
make the fight. I mean, it's so just because it
didn't happen. It's not like Golden boy's fault that those
fights that happened. Maybe Mura Taia had other ideas, maybe
body had other ideas, money this and that. But when
you get when you get teased with those types of
fights and you wind up with Schofield against Joseph Diaz Junior,
who's two and six in his last eight fights, who,
(25:02):
in my opinion, has basically no chance to actually win
the fight. Right, You're just very disappointed. Now, to Joseph
Diez's credit, he's coming off the loss to Regis Prograde
that was in August. That was at one hundred and
forty two pounds. They put on an absolute sensational slug fest.
Remember that was on the undercard when Oscar Duarte had
the excellent fight with Kenneth Simms and that one hundred
and forty pound eliminator. So Progray and and Diaz, two
(25:26):
guys you know, pass their best for sure, put on
a great fight. But I don't know if he loses
a fight like that to a shot Regis program, you
should be fighting Floyd Schofield, one of the most dynamic
Buik fighters in boxing.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
I was in the House of June twenty eighth for
him demolishing Tevin Farmer inside of about two and a
half minutes, sir, and I would much rather see him
in there with a better name, title shot something.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
That's just a disappointing fight. Man.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
What is your theory here on why they can't get
him a main event slot and he would be willing
to take a co feature slot for this? Is it
just the money?
Speaker 2 (26:00):
Well, God's got nothing to do with it. I think
you know, there's only certain amount of dates to go around.
They have a premium main event in lubin versus orties,
and so they give him the undercard spot. I'm not
saying he should be the main event. I'm saying you
can do better than a two and six Joseph Diaz,
who will a shot in the hell to win the fight,
to actually win. I just think it's a complete and
(26:21):
utter mismatch. So that's unfortunate. I mean, you think coming
off of the Tevin Farmer fight, you've got some momentum.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
Now.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
I know some people say, well, Joseph Diaz beat Tevin Farmer. Yeah,
that's years ago before he was a used up shot guy.
I mean, you can't compare the two. At this point.
Tevin Farmer is still a good fighter had given Zepeida
to Tallasia's battles and close fights. I mean, so I
don't want to hear that nonsense. It's just disappointing. Although
again main event superb with Ortiz and Lubin and so
(26:48):
they also added a couple other guys to the show.
To the undercart, they added the super middleweight prospect fringe
up and comer contender. Everyone to describe him, and that's
Darius Fulgeum, who's a fun fight to watch. He's facing
David Stevens. That's actually a pretty good matchup. I kind
of like that. That's two guys, one guy's fourteen and
one one guy's fifteen and two. That would be a
pretty big win for the guy that can come through
(27:09):
with that and can take a definite step forward and
get themselves back on track. Now, Fulgrum his only loss
was to Beck the Bully. They fought an eliminator back
in May. That's a forgivable loss. So if he can
try to right the ship and take care of David Stevens,
you know he'll have a chance to move forward. And
then the four mentioned who I mentioned among the top
Golden Boy prospects is the twenty twenty four United States
(27:30):
Olympian from Houston, Joshua Edwards, who's four to zero with
four knockouts. He's back in action on this card also,
and you know he's not fighting a known opponent necessarily,
but anytime you have an American heavyweight with that Olympic
pedigree who's knocking guys out, you know you should pay attention.
And so that's one of the other fights a day
announced for that card.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
All right, So that is November twenty eight. That the
end is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, if I'm not mistaken.
So we got a while before that's coming up here.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Taking place by the way, in Dicky's Arena in Fort Worth, Texas,
a home game for Virgil Artist, who comes from nearby
Grand Prairie, Texas.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
We'll see if he sells a lot of tickets there
in Fort Worth or not. We I mean, it's fair
to say we are very intrigued for what we're going
to talk about next, which is the Chris u Bank
Junior Nigel Ben rematch. And they can I'm sorry, connor
Bin rematch. I got to keep my u Bank straight.
You Bank Junior nineties connor Bin, And this will be
(28:27):
the the upcoming rematch of what is possibly the fight
of the year earlier this year. All right, so they
had the kickoff press conference earlier this week. There were
no eggs being served by Chris you Bank Junior, who
remember famously mocked Connor Bin's excuse for the PD test
with the eggs by smashing an egg on his face.
(28:49):
Did they frisk Chris you Bank Junior to make sure
that he had no eggs on? Don't pressure what happened
there on that and give me any other notes or nuggets.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Well, anytime Chris you Bank goes to a co he
just says a lot of outlandish and nutty things. So
if you remember at the last one, besides the nonsense
with the smashed egg in Connor Ben's face, which I
guess if I'm not mistaken, he was eventually fined and
punished a certain amount of money by the British Boxing Board.
When they did the press conference, he made some accusations
(29:18):
and said some pretty nasty things about Frank Warren. Frank
Warren sued him. They had to deal with that, and
so he left Frank Warren out of his crosshairs at
this press converence and said he went on the attack
against Eddie Hearn and he made some outlandish comments, and
so I'm all for like talking shit at press conference.
It sort of spices things up a little bit. But
I've never really been a fan of like the fighter
(29:39):
talking shit to the to the opposing trainer, to the
opposing manager, to the opposing promoter, you know, talk shit
to your opponent. That's the guy you got to get
in the ring and fight, right.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
But last I check, he's not lacing them up with Eddie.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
Hearn a great correct.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
So Eddie Hearn, you know who is obviously the promoter
for Connor Ben and I don't have to see her
and defend Eddie Hearn. Okay, he's a big boy. He
can defend themselves and no one's going to see him
suggest Eddie Hearn is a perfect individual. But the accusation
that Chris Ubank made is if you remember after the
first fight, spectacular fight, like I said, like you said,
you know, good chance to be fight of the year
(30:12):
this year. When that fight was over, both of the
fighters went to the or at least one of them
went to the hospital to get checked out. In u Bank,
even though he was the winner, went to get checked
out at the hospital. He made accusations that Eddie Hearn
somehow blocked his ambulance from leaving to take him to
the hospital to get examined after the fight, you know,
(30:33):
by like twenty minutes or something like that, which is
absolutely preposterous. You know, the British Boxing Board would never
allow that. Fighter safety is a serious matter in these things.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
If you go through and.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
You fight a tough fight like that and they tell
you you're going to the hospital, you taken to the
hospital and you don't screw around, I mean that's you know,
after care one oh one. So to suggest that Eddie Hearn,
a man who has promoted fights around the world, who
was promoted some of the biggest superstars in the history
about box who was promoted some of the biggest shows
you could possibly ask for, who grew up in boxing, uh,
(31:05):
you know, with his father Barry Hearn, having promoted some
mega fights including by the way, been involved with fights
involving people you may have heard of like Nigel ben
and Uh and uh and Chris you Banks, senor to
suggest that he's somehow going to do something to keep
the athlete from being examined because of the fact that
they sent to the hospital is just outlandish, and I
(31:26):
hope that the British Boxing Board finds him again and
and keeps him from saying such stupid shit.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
What was it? I didn't see it, obviously, so I'm ignorant,
and I think a lot of the audience is now curious.
What was Eddie's rebuttal? Was he saying that he blocked
the ambulance like with his limo or a caravan of issue?
Speaker 2 (31:41):
I don't remember what he was exactly, and what is defense?
Eddie said, you're crazy, he said, I mean paraphrase like,
I don't do that. What are you talking about? Absolutely nuts,
that's nutsy cuckoo. I mean again, I mean there's no
there's no promoter. First of all, promoters wouldn't even be
probably in that area where the is. They're doing the pride,
(32:02):
they're dealing with the Commission. You know, they're getting they're
getting paid, you know, they're getting stuff from the the Commission.
They're dealing with all kinds of different things. They're not
going to be standing there to try to stop it all.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
All I will say was this what I thoroughly enjoyed.
Because we don't get this, We rarely get this. I
thoroughly enjoyed that those guys after the fight were nothing
but class towards each other. After such a battle, it
made me want a second fight more. After the battle
that they put on the bombs, they landed great fight,
(32:36):
and then they were giving credit to each other after
the fight. You're tainting that a few months later.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
We also don't need that to sell the fight. The
fist fight speaks for itself in this action that they produced.
You mentioned the class that they showed, even if they
don't love each other after the fact, the fact that
it was a very successful event, there's still the backdrop
of the fathers and their great battles from the which
had two fights. So you've got a lot of things
to sell this event, whether it's tickets, pay per view, whatever.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
You want to talk about.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
To make that kind of statement just to piss on
Eddie's reputation again, I'm not gonna. I don't have to
kiss Eddie's ass. And believe me, Eddie and I have
had her ups and downs, but I respect Eddie as
a person.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
I respect Eddy as.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
A promoter, and I don't think he would ever, in
any possible way, do anything to prevent the ambulance from
taking a fighter who's been in a tough battle to
get medically attain in the.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
South a hogwash.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
I don't know thought they say poppycock.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
I don't In Britain they might say poppycock or rubbish, rubbish, rubbish,
but doesn't seem to make sense.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
Oh, that was terrible. So that was a real That
was just that. That was just stupid. That was ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
But they will have the second fight later this year.
We're looking forward to that. Watch my segue Rayphael late
on a Sunday evening headed into Monday. We're not going
to have a whole lot of other great action, and
I know you're a little grouchy about that. We do
have some cards of interest, but there's not enough meat
on the bu not enough side dishes on the plate
here in the remainder of the year. I think everybody
(34:07):
would agree.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Yeah, I think October November, so September is essentially over
in terms of whatever in significant fights are. There's really
nothing next week who that knows Wily then have a
preview pod. True, So if you take a look, you've
got the last quarter of the year October November and
December and usually there's some major events. Now it's still
possible that they'll be you know, a card here, a card.
(34:29):
They're added to the schedule and hopefully it'll be something significant.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
You know.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
PBC probably will add at least one more show, perhaps
Manny Pacya will be back in action. Hopefully Top Rank
will have something to do before the end of the year.
So there's still room for things to be added. But
the major promoters besides them, You're Queensberry's Matchrooms, Golden Boys.
I mean, their schedules are basically set again. They could
be some additions, but it's pretty pathetic right now. I mean,
(34:55):
the biggest event on the calendar for the rest of
the year, and this is a great show, you know,
even in a down here and it's been a down
year overall, but for the fourth quarter, this is by
far and away the best in the biggest show. And
that's the great card they're doing on November twenty second
in Riad, Saudi Arabia. That is a Ring magazine card
the Turkey is putting on, which is spectacular. David Benavidez
Anthony Yard for the light heavyweight belt, Brian Norman against
(35:18):
Devin Haney, for the WBO welterweight title that Brian Norman holds,
the unification fight three belt unification between Jesse Vam Rodriguez
and Puma Martinez, Abdullah Mason against Sam Noaks for the
vacant WBO lightweight title that was stripped when Keishaon Davis
failed to make weight for the last fight, and also
a non title fight with the return of Arthur Better
BF against Dion Nicholson. You've got a lot of great names,
(35:40):
you got a lot of titles, you got a lot
of important, significant fights. Nobody's cherry picking anybody. These are
all every single I mean, put the Better BF fight
aside for a minute, but the four main fights Benavide, Is, Norman,
Dam and Mason, all four of those guys are match
with opponents that absolutely can win the fight.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
And you could make an argument that any of them
could be a main event on a car a pay
per view.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
But on another card, you don't think Brian like let's
say Top Rank had a deal with esping, you don't
think Brian Norman Devin Haney would tap would headline in
the ESPM card and no question about it, and say
you don't think that if Eddie was doing a show
in the United States, had a three belt unification with
dam Rodriguez and Frando Martinez would headline the show. Of
course it would. So that's a great card. That's the
great outlier though, So if you take that away from
(36:23):
the schedule, I was looking through and I went through
and I called, like the.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
So called biggish fights.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
You have Boots and this on October eleventh against Uzma Lima,
which you know we've already had to.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Say biggest fights before.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
You said that, Well, I should say names. I guess yes,
so we already know my feelings about that. I no
need to get into that.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
PBC has a nice card on October twenty fifth with
their event with Fondora against Keith Thurman, O'shaki Fosser against
Stephen Fulton, Jesus Ramos against Shane Moley Junior. They added, Uh, well,
we knew Isaac Lucero the excellent young junior middleweight. They
just added his opponent Roberto Venezuela Jinger. I mean again,
PBC does a nice job with those shows. There's nothing
wrong with that's a good card. But again it's it's
(37:06):
not that there's no good fights for the rest of
the year. It's that there's lacking in terms of their
not enough not enough Okay, so you get further that
same night or a little earlier in the day for
those of us in the United States, you got Joseph
Parker against Fabia Worley. Okay, that's a good heavyweight fight.
We just talked about Virtual Artise against ericson Lubin. A
tremendous main event. Not so great so much in terms
(37:28):
of the co feature with Scofield against diz Do. I
even bother to count Jake Paul Gervonta Davis. It's an
entertainment type thing, but it's not real boxing. Obviously, they've
got their press conferences coming up this week. We'll see
what they talk about as far as if they, you know,
stipulate what their actual rules are going to be. They're
supposed to announce some of the undercard fights. I'll say
this about MVP. Whatever you think about the outlandish nature
(37:51):
of the main event, one thing the MVP has done
is when they put on these types of shows, they've
done a good job with their undercard. So I'm anxious
to see the types of fights that they've added to that.
You know, we got Chris Hubank and Connor ben in
the rematch in November. I mentioned the big November card
with Benavide's and then from the rest of the year
again hopefully some other stuff will get added, you know,
mostly Thomas supposed to be back in action on December thirteen.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
Still no opponent yet.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
Frank Warren says he quote unquote will be a top
ten guy, but top ten guys, you know, it depends
on what you use as your top ten the type
of opponent they can get for him. And then the
other card that we talked about in the last show
that was annouced a few days ago, the Night of
the Samurai, which is the Japanese guys against fighters from
the rest of the world. That's in a way against Picasso,
but in a way it was going to be like
(38:35):
a twenty to one favorite in that fight. Will Lebaldo
Garcia against Taraji in that title defense, Nakatani in a
non title fight, but moving up to infiltrate the same.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
Way class that NOI in a way is already in.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
Again, that's a good card, but I don't think that's
like a all time spectacular card. And so but even
if you love all those fights. That's not that much
activity for the final quarter of the year. So obviously
look at that, and I'm like, man, you know.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
But I mean, part of this we talked about it already.
We're gonna we're not gonna go over this because there's
not anything new. Top rank doesn't have shows right now.
They're out of side, out of mind, PBC not nearly
frequent enough. They're fighting basically once a quarter, so they
have slowed greatly and that's the reason why there's just
not a whole lot there.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
And they are anyway, so and again it's not done yet.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
But but everything I hear, you're gonna probably hear about
an event that good chance you'll see Lamont roach against
Pitt Bull Cruise, good fight we'll see or it comes
to pass. But again it doesn't. There's not a lot.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
We're gonna get it before Christmas.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
Yeah, I think we're supposed to get that maybe like
November ish, all right, But the point I'm making though, again,
it's not that the fights that are on the calendar
are bad. It's just there's not enough of enough depth
of them other than that one card in November.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
With that thought you were gonna say it, and you
didn't say it. Do you want me to say it?
With the schedule? What are we doing here with the schedule?
Let's get some more activity, Let's get some fighters in
the ring here.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
On this Yeah, because we're gonna go through the whole
calendar year. Fury's not gonna have fought. You can believe
if he's retired or not, obviously because of the injury
and the knockout loss. Anthony Joshua will go through this
whole year will not have had a fight. And those
are two of the biggest names in boxing, and those
are huge events when they get in the ring, so
they're not they're not gonna be too active obviously. So
(40:24):
you know, it's just I look at it and I
compare it to like a lot of other years where
you know, there's a lot of stuff that goes on
in that fourth quarter and this is not that type
of year. And it's sort of like a year where
it is a disappointment because the rest of twenty twenty
five has been a little bit substandard. Even like Alexander Usak,
he's the heavyweight champion of the world, only one fight
(40:44):
this year.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
You know, it's a great well at least, we have
some things going on. We'll get creative though with our
pod and also on the YouTube page. Be locked in
there as well with some different stuff that we're gonna
be doing and trying. And thank you to everybody engaging
on YouTube. Go hit subscribe comment on the videos that
helps everything there. Other than that, I think we are
(41:08):
good here off the weekend, and again, as you said,
we don't really have a whole lot this weekend, but
we'll get creative. We'll get creative either with a preview
end or a recap pod on this week We do
our best to service the savages. Give you something, give
you something here on the podcast feed. Anything else inclosing
here or are we good Dan for another weekend?
Speaker 3 (41:30):
I think we're good for another weekend.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
I think we all.
Speaker 3 (41:32):
I'm so pissed off about that stoppage.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
Let me tell you, yes, but it happened, and as
you mentioned, the Filipino fighter is probably never really going
to be heard from on the big stage. Again, that's
the sad part on a fight that he was not
severely damaged or hurt at the time if they stopped me,
but go figure unexpected. As always there in boxing, it
seems like it. With that, Dan, have a good week.
(41:55):
Thank you my friend. There is Big Dan Rayfield. Fight
