Speaker 1 (00:02):
All right, off of a weekend that has seen a
wild fight that you may not have known a lot
about in Venezuela. We're going to recap the shootout with
vote fighters down for the WBC's what Junior Flyweight Championship.
We're going to recap also the Golden Boy desone show
in Chicago which had two entertaining fights in the main
(00:24):
event and the co feature that and Terence Crawford on
the podcast with Big Dan Rayfield. I'm hanging here with
Big Dan Rayfield. It is the Fight Freaktion Night recap podcast.
Dan's got the substack. Fight Freaking Night is that substack
and the newsletter. Make sure you're subscribed up there and
getting all the intel and the info. Always good to
(00:45):
be with you here on the podfeed. I will say
up front, I did get some feedback from a couple
of people on messages, etc. That are missing us already
on the bet Us in one week Taffie Show one
week that we did not and we're not going to
be doing it on a regular basis anymore. This is
where and obviously if you're hearing, as you've already figured out,
(01:07):
this is where you can get twice the ray field
twice the fun right now as it stands, going into
every weekend, although it's a little lean.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Big Dan for the month of August. Here to do
previews and recaps not unusual.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
But this is a place where you get our takes
a little more unbridled, let's say, a little more colorful
language by Big Dan. All the above, and we're gonna
be doing a bunch on our YouTube channel as well,
preview mode, recap mode, nostalgia. So find the big fight
weeke in YouTube page. It's not like we went anywhere.
(01:41):
We're just not doing something regularly for them. So again,
thank you for finding us. A lot of you have
probably found us here in the last few weeks and
around the Pacquiao fight, the Alexander Usik fight that we're
both on. What was that July nineteenth, So thank you
to the audience. It is summertime, we are. We are
ramping up to the start of the pro football and
(02:02):
college football season in the US, but it's always boxing
season here on the program, all right, So Cherish Crawford
in a little bit, we'll play that interview. But this
here is a recap pod, and I must confess I
did not know about this fight, this Carlos canizalz fight
against Ponya, the WBC Junior Flyweight Champion.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
This is in Venezuela.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
This was back on Friday night, and my man Rayphiel
is texting me on did you see this fight?
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Did you see this fight?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
You actually put me onto it because it was through
ESPN Deportis, So I dialed it up on ESPN Plus
and the watch ESPN service that they have.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Let's begin right there.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
If you didn't know about it, you're about to find
out about it, and you need to find some highlights
or find the replay.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Go ahead.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah, this was a hell of a fight. And in fact,
this whole weekend between this fight and then the fights
that were on the Golden Boy card were all three
of those fights were super entertaining and super interesting to watch.
But this fight on Friday night. Now, I had known
the fight was scheduled because I am, as my schedule
on my newsletter says, I obsessed, So you don't have to.
This was a mandatory fight ordered by the WBC. If
(03:11):
you go back to December, you had the vacant title,
you had Cannonzales against Pania that took place in Bangkok,
which is his hometown for this title, and it was very,
very close, very controversial, but a lot of people thought
that Canazalas deserved to get to win. And you know,
you can tell when and I've watched this fight, it's
on YouTube. Pania gets the victory and his own people,
(03:34):
his own crowd are booing the decision. You don't see
that often. I mean, that's highly unusual. So if the
hometown guys fans are booing the decision, you can pretty
much rest assured that this is probably not the best
decision you've ever seen. So the Cannazales team protested. Obviously,
the WBC agreed it was not the greatest scoring of
(03:55):
all time. They did order the rematch, and that's what
took place, but instead of having it take place once
again in Thailand, where Panya is from, this time it
took place in Caracas, Venezuela, which is the hometown of
Carlos Canizales. Now, if you're familiar, Canazales had at one
point held a secondary title of the WBA. Now he's
fighting once again for the WBC title, And as an aside,
(04:18):
I was very happy it was a late addition to
the schedule. But ESPN now in Mexico and in Latin
American countries, they have a television show that appears on
the international version of ESPN called the ESPN Knockout. It's
a boxing program and they show a lot of the
international fights from around the world, but obviously a lot
of them are based in Central and South America Spanish
(04:39):
speaking countries. So this fight was an ESPN Knockout fight,
and at the last minute they added it not only
too live on ESPN the Portes on the Linear channel,
but also put it as an event on the ESPN
Plus platform. On ESPN Plus, they showed the whole show
on ESPN. On the Deportes on the Linear channel, they
showed the main event. Plus I think they showed part
(05:00):
of one of the other fights, but any of that.
What that tells me is that ESPN as a network
is not one hundred percent done with boxing in the
wake of the expiration of the Top Rank contract. Now,
keep in mind, the Top Rank contract was a two
way thing where Top Rank controlled all of the boxing
on ESPN and ESPN you know, could only do events
with Top Rank. So this this fight happened like literally
(05:22):
the day after or the day of the expiration of
the deal, so they were able to guess to go
out and pick up the rights to anything that they wanted.
So my hope is that in the for the time being, anyway,
if there's this sort of fight that's on ESPN knockout,
maybe they'll put it on ESPN Plus or ESPN the network,
the ports, you know, in lieu of a regularly scheduled show.
(05:44):
Now the only downside for those of us that speak
English it's in Spanish. But for me personally, I couldn't
care less. I've watched thousands of hours of Spanish language boxing.
It's fine with me. But anyway, as far as the
fight goes, TJ definitely a Fight of the Year candidate.
I don't know if it's going to be, you know,
the winner, it's not. It doesn't trump necessary, you know,
Connor Ben against Chris you Bank or Taraji against a Kui.
(06:04):
But these guys, from the moment the first bell sounded
just absolutely went to beat the living shit out of
each other. Both guys were down, I mean they were.
I mean, there're one hundred and eight pounders, But I
don't care how big or small you are. If you're
firing in your land and clean shots. You're gonna hurt guys.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Am I correct, Cannazales had fought your boy Taraji. Am
I not right about that? Previously, I thought I saw that.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
So he did fight Taji. This is back in twenty
twenty four. He challenged him for the WBC. Yeah, one
hundred and eight pound title when he held it, and
he lost the decision Taraji when he vacated to go
to one hundred and twelve to fill that vacant title
was Panya against against Canada.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
So I thought, I thought I knew about that.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
And again Cannazales being inspired by the crowd here, I'm
just gonna interject this. He was bombing to the body,
bombing to the head. And you know, I have to
be truthful when we when we do this, I already
knew that it's going to be a fifth round knockout
for Cannazales.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
It's it's not.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
I mean, I had I had seen somewhere the result
or you had told me. But still I watched the
fight as a fan. I watched it fully, and I'm like,
holy crap, as you as you had made mention that
they are bombing in the first round here of this fight,
in particular Canazales going to the body.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Well, I mean, as as much action as there was
in this fight, canna Zawis was clearly winning the fight.
You could hear because this was a fight that was
a WBC fight not in the United States, so it
was contested with open scoring, and so you could hear
them in the background after round four saying, you know
that that Canazalis was winning the fight, and he definitely
(07:37):
was winning. But Panya was tough as nails. He was
firing back and landing great shots too. They were just
you know, like reckless, abandoned firing punches. So canaz OUIs
looks like he's in control of the fight. And then
as bad as he had performed in the third round,
there had been a very bad headbutt. Yeah, really seemed
to impact Panya. He definitely did not, you know, they
both got hit with it, but the brunt of it
(07:58):
it seemed to be by Panya, so he was a
little shaken up by that.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
They had the doctor come.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Over, so he's getting beat up in the female.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
And she's checking for a cut, okay, and there was
no cut, but he clearly was you know, wincing and
holding his head and looking at the referee.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
As a man that covers football for a living like
you did. That's the epitome of He had his bell rung.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yes, he got yes, good good football analogy on getting
hit in the head and then and then we had
a shocking moment.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Well, so that's the thing. So he's he's in very
bad the rest in the third round, between the headbutt
and just general damage that he's taking and Okay, I'm
thinking this fight is soon to be stopped because it's
a shootout. I'm not sure how much more of these
guys are gonna take. Uh. And he comes out in
the first few seconds of the fourth round. He lands
a massive right hand and he's send. It was almost
like cartoonist. He sends cannazals like basically flying into the
(08:50):
into the ring ropes. Uh. They held him up clearly,
and the referee properly ruled at a knockown. He gave
him the A count. So now that's tighten things up
a little bit, because you know, you get the then
A round and uh, they just keep going at it.
And finally in round five, which again they're just slugging
it out and it didn't look like that bad at
first because it was the angle from the TV was
(09:11):
kind of behind him. When they showed the replay, you
could see it was a good shot, but Canzales got
in a really solid, very very rough hook to the
body and uh and.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Quiver because I didn't realize live the same way on
the replay what did he hit him with left? And
then then they finally showed a couple of angles where yeah,
he caught him with the liver quiver right under the
right rip.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Actually the hook to the body is what did it
and put him down. But as he was dropping to
the mat, he landed a shot with the right hand
and a body also that probably you know was sort
of window dressing, but it couldn't help the situation. And
so he's literally sitting on his rear end in the
corner with his back up against the ring post and
he was just done. And so it was a spectacular war.
(09:56):
It was a big win for Canonzales. He rights the
wrong that man he felt happened when he got the
bad end of the majority decision the first time around
when they fought back in December. And so now he
wins this one hundred eight pound title, and I'm telling
you there's been so if you go through history, there's
been so many good fights in that weight class. It
just doesn't get a lot of attention in the United States.
(10:18):
Most of the time. The fighters in those divisions are
you know, from Asia or from Latin America. The one
American that got a lot of attention in that weight
class was Michael Carblehall, who was a Hall of Famer.
He was, you know, he made that like a sexy
division for a little while. His his great fights with
Shaquiita Gonzalez and such. But if you didn't see this one,
I mean, and it's only you know, four plus rounds,
(10:39):
it's absolutely worth watching. This was a tremendous battle and
a big, big, big.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Genuine emotion from Canazales because he broke down on his
knees in the in the middle of the ring. His
corner's trying to pick him up, and he's a little
guy as it is to celebrate, and he's down on
all fours and on his knees, crying in the middle
of the ring in Vine.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
I've always thought Canizales was I've seen him fight several times.
I mean, I know he did lose that to fight
to Taraji, but by the way, and this was when
Taraji was really sort of at as you know, he's
in his peak at this point. This was this was
a majority decision he lost to Taraji, So he basically
went straight up with the guy at that time who
was the best in the division. The the loss they
suffered in the December fight was you know, highly suspect
(11:22):
and then you know, he did get knocked out in
twenty twenty one. This has been that one of those
WBA regular title fights. But you know, he's fought some
good fighters. If you take a look at his record,
he's beating other guys that have like these names, Gannigan,
Lopez and Show Kamara. You know, if you follow the
the small weight classes, you know, you'll see names that
you recognize that Daniel matt talone. I mean, there's been
solid opponents that he has defeated. So I think Cannazales
(11:45):
is a hell of a fun fighter to watch, and
I know, I'm hopeful they can find some kind of
notable fight for him. Mabe one hundred eight pounds, you know,
is sort of an interesting weight class. I mean, just
we talked about in the last recap when we were
talking about the the card that just took place that
was over in Japan where you had Takami win the title.
Uh you know in that in that fight by knockout.
(12:07):
I mean, I know it's very esoteric and like it's
not huge money, but the way Kenna Zalas fights and
he just fought this last fight, and the way Takami
showed himself, the way he took a part and won
the title last week, Like I dream about you like that?
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Ive some of that.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Gimme some of that as a as a fight. Let
me ask this question. Then we'll move on because we
don't have a lot. Oh and by the way, on
the recaps, but I love that Oscar Colaso go up
and fight one of those guys.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
My god, will you let me get my question out?
Speaker 1 (12:34):
I was going right there, So clarify for me and
the audience junior flyweight versus strawweight because I'm confused on
that level.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
But it's only like three pounds, Am I right?
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Unified?
Speaker 2 (12:48):
To clarify all of it with Klaso and that yes.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Yeah, Klaso's unified at one hundred five pounds. Kenna Zalas
and Takami now are two of the title theres at
one hundred and eight pounds Kalaso. You know, I know
he wants to try to become undisputed. There is a
pathway there, but they kind of got to get on
the ball. But he's going to be one hundred eight
pounder at some point and then not do this in future.
He doesn't have a specific fight say yet. I have
to imagine though, that Golden Boy will bring him back,
(13:13):
you know, sometime hopefully, you know, either at the end
of the summer or in the early fall, and you know,
if they can get him a unification fight, a rematch
with Melvin Jerusalem who's got the BC title, or get
the Filipino champion of the IBF, Pedro To Duran, you know,
and do that fight, so be it. But you know what,
there's a good action that can be made at one
oweight also if he wants to move up. So if
you're into those little weight classes and they produce and
(13:36):
massive action for little guys a lot of times, and
those are good fights.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
It's worth mentioning that. Again we'll brag on ourselves.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
We talk about Klaso and these little fights and the
Japanese fights that have the smallest of weight classes probably
as much as anybody sign me up on Colaso and
Canazalez off of what I said the other night. And
it's not like it's that big a deal when you're
talking about a three pound discrepancy. I mean it would
be simmer and if there was like an eight pound
discrepancy among the little guys.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
I mean, here's the reality. I mean when we talk
about the fact that there are maybe too many divisions
in boxing seventeen eighteen of the count bridger weight and
you were looking to sort of get rid of weight class.
Obviously you know, no offense to the to the little guys,
but you would you would absolutely get rid of strawweight.
It's totally unnecessary, you know, you know, eat a bowl
of pudding. You're good, you know what I mean. I mean, okay,
(14:22):
it's kind of unnecessary. They're all basically the same, so anyway,
but there's a lot of good action in those weight
classes and it's produced some all time great conactors. I mean,
Ricardo Lopez was in those weight classes one oh five
and went away. I even Calderone, a Roman chuck with
Tito Gonzales.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
I mean, well, I know you used to work at ESPN,
And it's funny that you mentioned that because I was
watching it with the commentary on. My wife even looked
at me. At one point he said, what is all
the excite? What are you watching? I said, I'm watching
this and Chava Rodriguez is the guy that's on the
play by play boy your boy. Chava must have said Calderone.
I've been called Arone like five times, so I don't
know in what vein. He kept bringing up Calderon and
(14:58):
his greatness versus Cannazal and what ken is also kept.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Bringing up because he evoked it over and over again.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Calgrow was one of his commentators that was working with him.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Okay, so Coler was on the podcast, so he was
teeing him up. And the interesting thing about them is
they're not sitting in the same places. They're doing it
remotely with headsets on, where they're not even the announcers
in the same place, much less not in the arena.
So we're fine with all of this because we got
to see the fight and it was an entertaining fighting.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
Really good.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
It goes from there.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
I let's advance to Saturday, where again the most noteworthy
fight card was this Golden Boys Show in Chicago, where
in the main event you got plenty of action and
ultimately an Oscar Duarte majority decision win over Kenneth Simms
in the junior welterweight main event. Your take on what
we saw there on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Night, Well, I believe that when we left off on
our preview, I said to you, I'd be really disappointed
if we were back here on Sunday talking about this
fight and it turned out to be no good And
I'm very proud to report for those who are listening,
maybe those who didn't actually watch the fight, one hundred percent,
I was right. Was it the fight of the year. No,
but it was very very good fight, a very close,
(16:04):
competitive fight, a very entertaining fight, good crowd that was there.
I said to you because Kenna Sims is from Chicago,
so he had his hometown crew there watching him. I
said it was a big Mexican fan base in Chicago
and that the fans of the Mexican fighters would turn out.
And what happened during the fight at varying times you
heard the chance of boss Man. Boss Man, that's Kenna
(16:26):
sims nickname. You were a chance of Mexico, Mexico obviously
in support of Duarte, and these guys put out a
very high class quality, professional contender type fight. It was
I didn't realize this they changed, they got this sanction
done at the last minute. Officially was a WBA one
hundred forty pound title illegally eliminator. I don't think it's
(16:48):
going to mean that the next fight is the title
fight for the for Duarte, who was the winner, because
Gary Antoine Russell, who is the WBA's one hundred forty
pound titleder, he's already backed up with his current many
that's been languishing that has not gotten taken care of
against the Japanese contender, Andy Harryoka. But nonetheless, Duarte gets
the win just a very very entertaining, very pleasing, very
(17:13):
satisfying fight. I thought the judges did a good job.
They gave the scores. They gave Duarte the win by
the majority decision. It was one sixteen, one to twelve.
That's how I added. One judge had at one fifteen,
one thirteen, perfectly reasonable. One judge had at one fourteen,
one fourteen. We always talk about the range of acceptable scores.
To me, those were the three scores that seemed reasonable
(17:34):
enough if you wanted to tell me he thought it
was a draw, I can't argue with that. You know,
it was that type of fight. Basically, what it came
down to is you've got the very aggressive Oscar Duarte
marching forward, winging uppercuts, winging big shots, winging hooks, and
you got the more subtle counterpuncher and Kenneth Sims, who
was doing an excellent job with his jab and also
(17:55):
landed you know, a good amount of flurries, and it
was sort of who do you liked better? It was
very plainly obvious that that and and this is professional boxing.
I always think about my conversations in years past with
the late great Harold Letterman. Professional boxing. At the end
of the day is who's doing more damage? And the
heavier punches were all things being equal, and they were
both landing, but that definitely the bigger punches were being
(18:18):
landed by Oscar Duarte, who is a bigger puncher. And
it was very evident he'd never really hurt Sims. I
didn't think he didn't knock him down or anything like that,
but it was just very obvious that he was the
guy between his hook, his upper cut and the power
behind them that was doing like a better job and
doing more damage, let's say, than the very excellent educated
hook or rather jab rather from from Sims and the
(18:42):
counterpunching ability. But really good fight. It's one of those fights.
We talked about this all the time, TJ. Both guys
and my estimation raised their stock just because Kenneth Simms
did not win. There's zero reason not to want to
see him in a fight against another quality opponent. I'm
sure the crowd would turn out for him again in Chicago.
The Zone would should be thrilled to put him back
(19:04):
on the air, same with Duarte and Duarte. You know,
it's a big win because he's gonna obviously he's a man,
he's gonna be in a mandatory position. He gets his
fourth win in a row. You know, he was most known,
unfortunately for the loss he suffered back at the end
of twenty three where he got stopped in the eighth
round by Ryan Garcia. But ever since then, he's beaten
Joseph Diz, he's beaten Acmandoff, he beat Miguel Madueno, and
(19:26):
now he's got another good quality win against Kenneth Sims.
I think this is the biggest win of his career
so far, and it was a hell of a fight.
And for Sam's look, he had won nine in a row.
He wanted his uh, you know, his dream was to
fight at home again. When he signed with Oscar a
year and a half ago or so, one of the
things that Golden Boy promised him, which what he really wanted,
was that they would bring him home to fight in Chicago.
(19:47):
So this was the third fight of his contract with
Golden Boy. Oscar and the team there stuck to their promise.
They brought him home. And maybe he didn't get the win,
but nobody, nobody that bought a ticket walked out of
that place thinking, you know, I shouldn't come to this
fight card. Really good show, really good main event. Can't
speak more highly enough. It can't wait to see the
weren't they back in the ring And can't wait to
see Kenny Sims back of the ring. I'm a fan
(20:09):
of both these guys. Man, hell of a fight, all right.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
And speaking of when you left us on the preview pod,
you mentioned that regis progray and speaking of Joseph Jojo
Diaz might very well be two guys that are basically
at the end that can't really get out of the
way much anymore and might slug it out, and that
is exactly what it turned out to be. For ten
rounds of this one for a lot of it at
(20:34):
least anyway, a very entertaining co feature which reaches Progray
won by unanimous decision in a fairly close fight. Are
giving your thoughts as a pro Gray, former world champion
at one point here gets the victory, and again we
understand that Progray had two awful losses before this, but
(20:54):
at least he got the win here in the Crow
feature and they did slug.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
It out, they did, and I look, it was a
highly entertaining fight to watch. It was the fight of
the night, as much as I enjoyed the main event
between Duarte and Sam's too much more skillful fighters at
this stage of their careers, two more fresher fighters at
this stage. But there's something to be said for you know,
you know, not to be I'm not trying to call
(21:18):
anybody names or speak badly, but basically two shot guys
looking to hang on who really can't do anything else
but stand and fight and show their heart, because that's
you know. I wrote this on social media against to
a certain point when Jojo Diaz and Regis are just
winging shots and slugging it out where they've gotten, it's
very they have nothing left at all other than their
(21:39):
balls in their heart. And I respect that obviously, because
they are tough men for sure. So the scores of
the fight ninety six to ninety four for Regis, that
seemed about right. There was some conversation among the broadcasters
on his own our boys Grisham and Sergio Mora and
Mannix that maybe a draw. I thought that would not
have been.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Social media kept saying this looks like it's got draw
written all over it.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
Because there was no there was no knockdowns, there was
no point deduction, so there was nothing that's going to
mess up the scoring like that. So in the end
two judges have it ninety six ninety four for program,
which is fine if you if you're going to pick
a winner. He probably eked it out, but again it's boxing.
There's always that one outlier card that you look at
you're like, I don't know how they got to that.
And one of the judges add it ninety eight to
ninety two in favor of Regis, which was in no
(22:24):
way eight to two in no way, shape or form
shows you the good work that Joseph Diaz did. Look,
these guys are both finished in terms of being championship
level contenders. I know Regis with the victory, still harbors
the great hope that he can get another title shot
and win one. I'm very skeptical, and I don't say
that with any happiness. I'm a fan of Regis program.
(22:45):
He's a been a hell of a fighter, He's a
good dude, gives everything he's got and uh, but the
thing about it is number one, if you were watching
the show, it's very clear when you just saw them
as people next to each other. Regis Program is just
a look much larger human being than Joseph Diaz. Joseph
Diaz was at his best, which is now several years ago,
(23:06):
at one hundred and thirty and one hundred and thirty
five pounds. Now he's up fighting at one hundred and
forty two pounds, which was the catchweight or the contract
wait for this, so a little bit over the junior
welterweight limit. And he was just a much smaller guy.
And Joseph Diaz, we've known about how great of a
chin he has only been stopped the one time, and
that was actually by Duarte back in twenty twenty four.
(23:28):
But what Joseph Diaz has never had, even at the
lower weight classes, is any kind of significant punching power,
never been known as a puncher at all. And to
watch him go in there as a much smaller guy,
pretty much shot to bits at this point, way over
his best weight, hurting Regius Prograde, not once by accident
with a lucky shot, but on a multiple occasions, could
(23:51):
not miss with his left hand. He would have we
would have rounds where and the best thing that Regis
brought to the table was a jeb is still very good.
He kept him at day, he kept him off balance,
he kept him on the end of it, and then
he would kind of forget about it, or maybe you
get a little bit tired. And like the last thirty
forty to fifty seconds of the round, you'd have Joseph
Diaz on the attack with the left hand, and every
(24:13):
time he hit him with the left hand inside these
little short punches, he's doing the stinky leg, he's doing
the Gumby dance. He's all over the place. End of
the first round, Regis is dominated he's had, you know,
he's been laying the jab on him the whole round,
and all of a sudden you hear, you know, there's
just this short, little left hand on the inside and
Regis is like, you know, all over the place like
a drunken sailor so and that wasn't just one time.
(24:33):
There was about four or five times, it felt like
in that fight right where he got badly hurt by left.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
So in victory, I mean, we got to get to
realism at some point. Should there be some people intervening
here and saying putting that tape on and saying to
Progray even in victory here this is a blown up
junior lightweight or lightweight. He's what thirty seven? Now we're
about to be thirty seven. I think I saw that
(24:58):
Regis talking about Progray, right, So at some point fighters
safety six. Now he's thirty six, right, but I think
he's thirty seven. Soon you're coming into the fighter safety thing,
especially when you're describing what you're describing on He did
not look good in any of his last three fights.
Devin Handy put a real whooping on him about a
year ago, year and a half ago, what was a
December of twenty three, for their own good, for their
(25:23):
own brains, and mush coming up here in the next
five years, the next ten years of their lives. If Jojo,
My point is, if Jojo Diaz is doing that to him,
then there's serious concern for down the road.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
My point was, if you, if you are struggling this
badly against Joseph Diaz, who's now two and seven in
his last nine fights, if you're struggling this badly against
that guy, a smaller guy with not a lot of
punching power, who hasn't looked good for years. Last time
he had a win of matter was twenty twenty one,
and even in victory, you're probably done. So okay, I
(25:58):
appreciate their heart and the desire of Regis. He did
make an excellent point. I agree with him one hundred percent.
If I didn't go and lock in for the two
months in Vegas and really take my training seriously and
get myself in the kind of condition I was in,
which he was in great shape, and Jojo was in
good shape also. I'll give him credit for that too,
but that it was really the conditioning that won him
to fight, Because I mean again, if Joseph Diaz is
(26:21):
doing that kind of damage with his left hand. What
it would it be like. Imagine imagine Regis Program in
a similar situation that he's fighting Sabril Mattias, who's a
big puncher who's got the best title, or he's fighting
Tiafimo Lopez or Richardson Hitchens or Gary Antoin Russell. I'm
citing the other guys with the titles, or a pit
Bull Cruise who has an interim title, who's a relentless
(26:43):
kind of fighter. My point is, you would be in
a lot more trouble, like you said, like a lightweight
junior lightweight that's not a puncher at all. So yeah,
he got the win. I think both guys. They showed
a lot of heart. The fans loved it, you know,
they asked them about the rematch. He's like, you know,
if we can fight for a title or there's quote
big ass money, then he would do it.
Speaker 1 (27:04):
But right now he's not a lot more than co
feature on a his own Golden Boys show coming up Progray.
By the way, it'll be thirty seven in January, so
not as soon as I was intimating. But again, uh,
he was a very entertaining fighter.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
That's fine thing. I mean that has that has apparently faded.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
And at this point you put him in there against
somebody that can punch. I'm concerned and you wonder if
the if the others around him will be concerned for him,
because there you go.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
This is a smaller and the smaller picture of it though.
Uh for what it was two name guys who were
at the end of their careers looking to hang on.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
Sure they put on the line. They laid it on
the line in a ten round fight. They absolutely did.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
So when you combine that co feature and the entertainment
value and the drama of watching Regis survive those hard moments.
And oh and I should also mention this was a
headbutt that happened early in the fight. Joseph Diaz bled
like a stuck pig for most of the fight because
he got caught over the eye.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Let's talk about the doctor, shall we can we go
over the check of the eye and the vision.
Speaker 2 (28:05):
Can you go over that police for those?
Speaker 3 (28:07):
So meanwhile the blood is pouring down his face. The
cut happened early in the fight. He's wearing white trunks.
By the end of the fight is you know, you
think he's wearing pink trunks because there was so much bloodshed.
So I've got three different times during the fight they
took Jojo Diaz to the doctor, you know, like they
typically do the bell rings, they call time out and
they have the doctor come up onto the ring apron
to check them out and do the test. They did
(28:29):
it before the tenth round, at which point you're like,
you can't stop the fight. Now, they got three minutes
left in the you know, he's been just fine. And
there was two other times when when when they stopped it,
that stopped it, but you know what I mean, when
they went the doctor to check it out, and I
forget I think it was maybe before the sixth round.
You know that their sixth round started, they called the
(28:49):
time out. They bring Jojo Diaz over to the doctor.
The doctor covers one eye, which is typical when you're
doing this type of test to make sure he's got
a vision where the cut was, and they hold up
two fingers, one finger or whatever. Tell me how many
fingers get up. There's a very famous scene in that
Artaro Gotti fight from years ago in the corner when
he's fighting the incredible fight against Wilson Rodriguez, and he's
(29:09):
guessing because the corner, the cutman is tapping him on
the leg, how many fingers he's holding up? Jojo Diaz
doesn't even have anybody tapping him on the shoulder or
tapping him on the butter, tapping him on the leg.
And the doctors like, how many fingers I got up?
And he holds up two and Jojo says one wrong,
and then the doctor does it again and he guesses
the wrong number again. He holds doctors, what are we
(29:32):
doing here?
Speaker 2 (29:33):
What are we doing here? The ringside physician checking.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
For vision, and he's over two on how many fingers
am I holding up?
Speaker 2 (29:41):
And we let the fight go on.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
So that was in fact at the start of the
sixth round, but it was just absolutely ridiculous. So like
it's it's I mean, it's funny, yes, in a way,
but it's kind of fucked up because you're supposed to
be medical professionals. If the guy's if you're holding up
fingers and you're holding a finger or your hand over
the guy's eye and the.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Other thing you see out of this eye.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
And ye, and he can't tell you how many fingers
he has. Why are we letting the fight go on?
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Yeah? What are we doing here?
Speaker 3 (30:08):
On that?
Speaker 2 (30:08):
They did?
Speaker 1 (30:09):
Let the fight go on again, I said just a
few moments ago, and it's worth repeating because we say
it frequently. Somebody's got to save these guys from themselves
at times. And that's a doctor, that's a referee, that's
their corner, people, family, whoever.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
On some of this and there, that's the doctor's job.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
Okay, So we already know, and we discussed this ahead
of time before the fight. Chicago is a great fight city,
but has not been a place for a big time
boxing for a number of years. This is by far
the biggest boxing show they've had in Chicago for a
number of years, at least that's the way it seems to.
I mean, they've had some fights there, but it hasn't
been that many big fights, or I would have been
(30:46):
there more often than I had been. Here's the other problem.
So besides a doctor that apparently didn't know what the
hell he was doing or she was.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Doing, it was a he in that case.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
Yes, how about the fourth round? They rang the bell
after two mins?
Speaker 2 (31:00):
And yes, we had a short, We had a short
and fourth round.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
A two minute round. That's in a three minute round.
I understand that in women's boxing you might have a
two minute round. In men's boxing you do not have
two minute rounds, unless, of course, you're Mike Tyson fighting
against Jake Paul. But that was not under the situation
for this particular fight. So you got two major fuck
ups by the commission up there. You got a timekeeper
that doesn't know how to keep time, and you got
a doctor who apparently doesn't care if the page does
(31:24):
get the wrong answer.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Not good, but how about them bears.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
By the way, but overall horrific goal.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
But by the way, that was also a heavyweight.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
Uh you said you told us on the preview podcast
you were interested in seeing Joshua Edwards and speaking of
two minutes, not three minutes.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
It didn't take long.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
See. Yeah, so they had some they showed some of
the other undercard bouts, but the one that with me
was the most interesting, not because the matchup was just
to watch the further development if you can't even call
this development, because how quick it was of the Houston
heavyweight Joshua Edwards, who was the twenty twenty four US Olympian,
who had turned pro earlier this year, who was in
a six round schedule fight. He's now four to zero
(32:02):
with four knockouts. He faced the fighter named kaman Audi,
who was massively overmatched. He dropped him with a heavy
right hand and then just pummeled him with another right hand.
He didn't knock him down, but he knocked him like,
you know, sideways into the ropes and he just was
running for cover and the referee properly stopped the fight.
But again, the idea here is you're watching the continued
development of the probably other than Richard Torres, the best
(32:26):
young American up and coming heavyweight in a landscape that
doesn't have more than just a couple of guys in
that group. So, like I said in the pre fight,
and nothing has changed. Joshua Edwards as a fighter to
definitely keep an eye on, because if you like heavyweights,
there ain't a lot of American heavyweights. He's certainly in
his first four fights. I know you're not fighting top opponents,
(32:47):
but he is showing good knockout power. He seems to
have a good attitude. I thought his interview was well spoken,
and he's talking about not only being a monster on offense,
but making sure he you know, keeps on point on defense,
which is good. Also, he moves well. He's built in
a good way in terms of his you know, his
proportions for a heavyweight. So again, he's only twenty five
(33:08):
years old. There's plenty of time for development. Golden Boy.
You know, he's gonna probably have him on every show
the rest of this year. The idea is to get
him eight or ten fights this year. We'll see if
they can keep it up with as long as he
doesn't get injured. And so it took him all of
one minute and twenty nine seconds to get rid of
his most of the recent opponent. And I look forward
to watching him when he comes back in the ring
for the next fight.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
Speaking of looking forward, you did reference Todd Grisham, the
desone play by play broadcaster, a long time play by
play broadcaster with ESPN and also the WWE. We love
his boxing work. We look forward dan to having him
speaking of our YouTube page with us on a live
YouTube Q and a you and me catch up with him.
(33:48):
He worked the USIK Tyson Fury. I believe he worked
both fights. I gotta go back and double check. I
know that he worked the second fight where was in
the second fight where Fury was hurt badly in the
ninth round. I believe that was the second fight. He
definitely worked that one, but he's been the main blow
by blow guy for a lot.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
Actually thought that was the first fight where you got.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
So it was the first fight. I think he worked
them both. But anyway, he's worked a lot of big
time fights. Most recently, I was around him for the
Jake Paul card.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
And he worked.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Yes, I'm aware of that, and we were talking about
him earlier and I just said that. So we look
forward to talking with him about broadcasting some of these
fights and get his thoughts on what's going to be
taking place. He also worked the Canelo horrific fight with
William Skull all the way in Saudi Arabia too. While
we're at it, So again, Todd Grisham, do to be
with us. We're trying to work it out podcast audience
(34:43):
for one night this coming week Tuesday night, Wednesday night.
Keep it locked in on our social media and on
the Big Fight Weekend YouTube page. Hit the subscribe button,
hit the notification button. You'll find out, Hey, there's a
new show coming on Live, et cetera. And a lot
of you have found the YouTube page. Continued find it,
you'll find more great content from us preview mode, recap mode,
(35:03):
et cetera on the Big Fight weekend, YouTube pitch stuff
like what we're about to go to. It's a podcast
exclusive though. First of all, here you are with us here,
as Dan has spoken in recent days with Terrence Crawford.
Crawford to fight Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas in September.
Let's get to your conversation with the man that has
been undisputed twice at junior welterweight and at welterweight. He
(35:26):
is still currently comically the WBA junior middleweight champ. We'll
cover that again here in a little while.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
That'll be that's just a matter.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Of semantics in time of when that happens.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
But any event, Bud Crawford right now with Dan on
the pod, here you go.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Well, it is my distinct pleasure to be joined on
our podcast by the one and only four division world champion,
one of the great pound for pound fighters in boxing today,
Terrence Bud Crawford. But it's really a pleasure to have
you on here. I know you have a very big
fight coming up. Probably the biggest of your career. You
gonna be challenging the undisputed super middweight world champion Canelo
Alba for that title. Will take place on September thirteenth
(36:03):
at Allegiant Stadium, their first ever stadium fight in Las Vegas.
Tickets are on sale. The fight is for all subscribers
on Netflix. A beautiful thing for fight fans. Welcome. And
I wanted to start off Terrence because this fight is
sort of taken on a life of its own, I
think among boxing fans. After you dominated and knocked out
(36:24):
Errol Spence, I wonder at what point did like this
become the focus of your goal of it to land
this fight against Canelo Auberts. At what point did you
say I want that guy?
Speaker 4 (36:34):
Well, this is big.
Speaker 5 (36:35):
This is the biggest fight to be made in boxing
out of all the divisions. You know, Terrence Crawford versus Canelo,
you know, it don't get no bigger than that. So
that was a fight that I looked at, looked into
and said that could happen.
Speaker 4 (36:55):
You know, given the.
Speaker 5 (36:57):
Likes that Jamel Charlie was able to go up and
you know, from one p. Fifty four and get the opportunity.
I felt like I was able to should be able
to get the opportunity as well.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
So he wasn't really that into it when this when
you first started to talk about it and it kind
of became a thing on social media. You know, he
was asked about it many times. I asked him that
he was like, yeah, I'm not really interested in that fight.
And obviously now the fight is happening, So I wonder,
how how did you get Turkey to get into the
fight and how did you I feel like, you basically
will this fight into being How do you feel like
(37:32):
that happened? Like what changed? Obviously a lot of money
for him, but in getting it done, did it become reality?
Speaker 4 (37:40):
Well, I think just me being serious about it. You know.
Speaker 5 (37:43):
At first, you know, Turkey felt as if I should
fight somebody at one fifty four and you know, go
to try to become undisputed at one fifty four. But
those great those guys at one fifty four didn't really
too much do none for me or my career. So
(38:03):
why not go up and challenge myself and you know,
fight another all time great in Canila.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
So I'm big into like the history of boxing. Besides
just following current boxing, and I look at the matchup Bud,
and I see, if you win, you become a five
division world champion, which is certainly a huge deal, and
there's not a lot of guys I've ever done that.
But what I look at is that if you win,
you become a four division lineal champion. You did it
at lightweight, you did it at junior welterweight, you did
it obviously at welterweight, and you won a title at
(38:35):
one fifty four, but it wasn't considered the lineal title.
If you beat Canelo Alvarez and you take away the
super middleweight underspeeded title, that'll be a fourth lineal championship.
There are only two other fighters in the history of
boxing that have accomplished that. That are those guys are
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacya. And I wonder, in your
from your perspective, what would that mean to you to
join that is extraordinary elite company.
Speaker 5 (38:58):
Well man, dang like you know, those are the two,
you know, uh, two great fighters that you know ever
laced up a pair of gloves. So to be in
a category with just them two and myself, it would be,
you know, something crazy to even think about you know,
(39:21):
it's crazy to even think about it right now, because
did you know that it was funny because we was
talking about it yesterday.
Speaker 4 (39:28):
Okay, you know, we was talking about it yesterday.
Speaker 5 (39:31):
And and it just was just like, dang, I can
make history, you know, as as as well as becoming
a three times undisputed you know, champion in three different
weight classes. You know, there's a lot riding on this
fight for me, you know, And yeah, of course, you know,
(39:51):
and we're looking forward to it now.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
When I watched you and uh and Canelo do your
your press conferences in Ria and then you went to
New York City or Las Vegas, there's clearly, at least
the way I look, and I've watched a lot of
press conferences, clearly very healthy respect between the two of you.
You respect his accomplishments. I know he respects your accomplishments.
And there's been some friendliness, but there's also been a
little chippiness, which is good for any promotion. Especially he
(40:15):
seemed to downplay your resume in various interviews and at
the press conferences. How much does that irritate you because
you've accomplished a lot of the same things he's done with,
you know, championships and four weight classes, multiple undisputed titles
of that type of thing.
Speaker 5 (40:28):
Well, it definitely irritated me because I can say so
much about you know, his resume and the guys he
fought at the time he fought and so forth.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
But I'm not gonna do that, you know.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
I'd rather, you know, talk about him as a fighter
and forget all the other people that he fought before me,
because you know, at the end of the day, they
don't matter. Me and him got a fight. I'm not
fighting his resume. I'm not fighting the guys that he fought,
none of that. So I'd rather keep it straight about Canelo.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
Talk to me a little bit about the process to
the reshape your body. I mean, you obviously came into
the pros. Your first title was that lightweight. Now you're
going to be more than thirty pounds in terms of
the limit above that. You've looked good, I mean size
wise when I saw you at the press conferences and
that sort of thing. What is the process like to
to build yourself up to a solid one hundred and
(41:28):
sixty eight pounder or close to it, Because you've only
had the one fight even at one fifty four that
was your win against MATCHAMUF in August of last year.
Speaker 5 (41:37):
Well, I think just you know, not having a cut muscle,
I had to worry about making weight and struggle and
things like that.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
I think, you know, as you.
Speaker 5 (41:50):
Get older, your body naturally grows, you know, but if
you're not letting it grow, because your body want to grow,
especially when you work out a lot, you know, but
you hinder in it to grow the time that you do,
let it do what it do.
Speaker 4 (42:05):
You know, this is the this part of the process
that we have.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
But they're going to take. What I wonder though, is
there special things you're I wonder is there special stuff
you're doing? I give you an example when Bart Hopkins
moved up from middleweight to light heavyweight. Okay, he went
way above the women and then cut down to one
seventy five. You're not doing anything like that.
Speaker 5 (42:29):
No, no, not at all, not at all. So we
definitely eat more, you know, we definitely eat more. We
we're definitely trying to put peck, you know, more muscle,
but not too much muscle.
Speaker 3 (42:41):
So so when you when the fight comes about and
I think back, we mentioned many Packett with all the
lineal titles. When he went up and fought at junior
middleweight against Antonio Margarito, he came in way under the
contract women. Contract limit for the fifty four pound title
was like one hundred and fifty for that fight, but
he came in barely over one hundred and forty four pounds.
Is your intention to bulk all the way up to
(43:02):
one sixty eight or is it to maybe come in
a little bit under to maintain the great speed that
Terren Scowford has.
Speaker 4 (43:08):
I don't know. We shall see, we gotta, we gotta,
you know, a little bit under.
Speaker 5 (43:14):
Too muchs to figure that out, and then you know,
we'll make the best solution for find that.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
I want to also ask you, Terrence, about the fact
that this fight's on Netflix not a pay per view
search charge. If you subscribe to Netflix the way people
would subscribe to other things and they just watch it
as part of their regular subscription. That seems to me anyway,
as a boxing fan, that's an awesome thing to have
a fight of this magnitude, a fight of this high quality, caliber, historical,
all the things we can discuss about it, that it
(43:42):
is not an extra search charge. I wonder your perspective
because you've had a few pay per view fights. Obviously
you had the Arrow Spence was your big one on
pay per view. But what do you think is that
how good it is or your perspective? Have is available
to the masses with them out without having to pay
extra money for it, but you guys still getting paid
a lot of money.
Speaker 4 (43:59):
Well, I think it's gonna be great, you know.
Speaker 5 (44:01):
I think boxing is moving towards, you know, moving away
from pay per view, and I think it's a good
thing because a lot of people, you know, with the
privacy and stealing fights and things like that, I think
that's you know, killed the pay per view. So you know,
I think giving it to the masses that have the
(44:25):
app and things like that will be the next beat
sting for not only.
Speaker 4 (44:32):
The fans, but for the for the sport of boxing.
Speaker 5 (44:36):
You know, when you look at the bigger sports, you know,
I won't say bigger sports, I would say the other
sports like NBA, NFL. They on Prime TV, you know,
where you know, you don't have to pay a subscription
or or pay for pay per view to see them play.
I think, you know, if we can get back to that,
(44:59):
I think boxing to be, you know, back where it
used to be back in the days.
Speaker 3 (45:03):
Well, certainly it seems to be working in those little spots.
At Netflix's pick to do its thing because they had
huge audience for their Jake Paul Mike Tyson event. They
had record type of audience for women's sports when they
did the recent Katie Taylor at Amanda Toronto. So having
you guys, you know, it was going to be a
huge thing for them. When I was looking over your
record just sort of refreshed myself. I realized, you know,
(45:25):
you've only had a one fight for the last per year,
you know, between twenty twenty and twenty twenty four, one
fight per year, And I wonder is that by designed
for you or is that a matter of like you
just decided I'm going to be a once a year fighter.
I'm making good money, I'll pick my spots. Or were
you preferring to be a little more active.
Speaker 5 (45:42):
Well, I would definitely would have liked to fight fight
more and would have been more active, But given the
circumstances that I had with my contract and then the
circumstances with Spence, we had a rematch clause and that
was dragged out for a year and then turned out
that the rematch wasn't gonna happen, and trying to get
(46:07):
an opponent and fighting you know, Magic Mov because I
was trying to fight front Door and they didn't want
to fight me then, so I had to go to
Plan B and figure out who I was gonna fight,
and then you know, we end up fighting magicum offten
after that, it wasn't it wasn't really nothing for me,
(46:27):
you know, so we was just still working on a
Canelo fight.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
So now we're here, and you know, we're gonna be
ready for it.
Speaker 3 (46:36):
He turned thirty eight years old two weeks after the fight.
You're you're actually older than him, even though he's got
a lot more fights in you. This is gonna be
by far your biggest fight in terms of the profile,
what it could do for your legacy with the victory, certainly,
I would imagine your bank account so any and he's
not getting any younger either, And I sort of think about, like,
is this sort of the end game if you will?
(46:57):
Do you do you think about retirement when this is over,
whatever the outcome is, or are there more fights left
in Terrence Scrufford.
Speaker 5 (47:04):
Oh man, this this is definitely a question that everybody
keep asking. Not tell him all the same thing. You know,
we don't know, you know, one fight at a time.
Let's see how this fight go. Maybe, you know, I'll
go back down on one fifty four and try to
become undisputed.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
Maybe I love to do a rematch. Who knows, you know.
Speaker 5 (47:26):
Right now, we just focus on the task at hand,
and that's Canela well understood.
Speaker 3 (47:31):
I just did a couple more questions for you, Bud,
and that is in terms of Canelo. I look at
it and even though we all know he's a great fighter,
he really hasn't had what I think people would view
as a really impressive performance since twenty twenty one. That's
when he knocked out Kayla Plant to become the undisputed
champion at one sixty four the first time. And you know,
he's still been winning most of his fights. He did
(47:51):
have the loss that light heavyweight to demetri people. But
I look more in particular to the last fight he
had in May against William scup Oh through barely and
he punches, was not able to put on any kind
of hurt on williams cull whatsoever in that fight. It
was a dreadful fight on top of that, and being honest,
as much as I love Canela look pretty bad in
that fight. And I wonder when you look at that performance,
(48:12):
If you have looked at that performance, what is your
view about what he has left? Or maybe was he
just disinterested for whatever reason? Because Skull wasn't a big name.
The fight was at six thirty in the morning, you
know in Saudi Arabia, where maybe people were a little
sleepy and so it didn't have that kind of crowd enthusiasm.
What's your take on that he's got. By the way,
I'll mention this as an amazing stat I mean, even
(48:32):
though you're older than he is, he has five hundred
and twenty pro rounds, more than double what you have,
which is two hundred and forty five.
Speaker 5 (48:41):
I think it was just him being frustrated because Skull
wouldn't fight to fight day. He wanted to fight, and
you know he was just either irritated or bored. I
just think styles many fights at the end of the day.
Speaker 3 (48:57):
All right, Just I'll wrap up with this. I know,
having covered your career for a very long time, you're
always confident going into your fights. I know you have
the full expectation to be the winner of this fight.
He has never been knocked down in his career. He
has never been stopped. Before you fought Magic Mav, you
had stopped eleven opponents in a row. Granted they were
in the smaller weight classes. But I'm wondering, is it
(49:17):
do you think about when you look at the fight
and the way you feel le will unfold it is
a knockout, which would be an amazing feat for you.
Is that something that you even think about getting in
this fight.
Speaker 5 (49:28):
I'm gotta knock him out. I just got to beat them.
You know, everybody getting hyped on a knockout.
Speaker 4 (49:33):
I'm not hyped on it.
Speaker 3 (49:33):
I'm just wondering. You're tho.
Speaker 5 (49:34):
I understand, but I don't never go in none of
my fights looking for a knockout. You know, if it come,
and come, if it don't. You know, as long as
I get the victory, that's all that matters.
Speaker 3 (49:44):
All right, Well, I will look forward to watching your
efforts and getting that victory. You can pull it off, Terrence.
I appreciate your time and I really wish you a
lot of good luck in the fight. September thirteenth, Sure, all.
Speaker 1 (49:55):
Right, you were very privately. You were bully on this.
You said, Hey, Terce Crawford was really good. I agree
with you there on the conversation. We're still what about
six weeks five, six weeks out from fight week coming up,
but your impressions having seen him and talked to him,
here as everybody's to fight.
Speaker 3 (50:14):
Kenel Laubres spurious minded, locked in for the fight. You
know he was in when I spoke to him. When
I spoke to him, I was in Las Vegas still
right before the Pacquiao fight. He was in training camp
in Colorado Springs, And as he said at one point
in the interview, there's a lot of riding on this fight.
He knows it. You know, he's going to be a
(50:36):
first ballot Hall of Famer. He's gonna make a huge
amount of money for this fight. He's already made a
lot of money in recent fights. But he understands the
magnitude that's at stake in terms of the history for
his legacy. Okay, money is great, and it's how you
support your family, and he's got a whole lot of
kids and all that, but he's cognizant of the history
of boxing. He understands what is at stake. Here he
can become a four belt champion in a third different
(51:00):
weight class, which obviously is unprecedented at this point. He
can become uh A in this we had the conversation
at this part, but also win a lineal title in
a fourth weight class, which has only happened two other
times in the history of boxing, by Manny Paco and
Floyd Mayweather. Because he was lineal champion at lightweight, he's
lineal champion at junior welterweight, lineal champion at welterweight, and
(51:21):
obviously he beats Kenilloavers to become on disputed that's another
weight class. So he's won titles uh in four divisions.
He can win a title in a fifth division, also
a big deal. But to be lineal in four that
that to me is even bigger than the five in
terms of overall weight classes. So he understands it. So
when I hear a lot of fighters you hear I
can't tell you how many times you know that I've
I've heard fighters say this going into huge fights, just
(51:44):
another fight, just taking like another fight. I was really
happy to hear the Crawford understands and is willing to
say so out loud exactly that there's a lot riding
on this one. I get and I'm that really that
that that excites me when the fighter acknowledges there's a
lot right on the fight. Obviously we know that, but
to hear the athletes say it to me, it bring
(52:04):
it to another level. We got you know, you gotta
you gotta take the gamble if he loses. Nobody should
disrespect Terrence Crawford. He's taking the gamble against one of
the all time greats who's two way classes bigger than him.
Speaker 1 (52:15):
And you would you would be the one to speak
to this because you're a Hall of Fame voter, You've
been doing it for a long time. But truthfully, has
Terrence Crawford had a moment where he's fought another lock
certain future Hall of Famer? I know the Spence and
anniversary is two years ago, but can we say right
now that Errol Spence is a lock certain Hall of Famer?
Speaker 2 (52:35):
No, I don't. I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (52:36):
So there's there's a couple of ways I look at it. Okay,
certain guys, you don't have to even like look at
the resume. I don't need to like go search and
do homework. I know, if I'm voting for Manny pack Hour,
that's Lloyd Mayweather or Oscar de la Hoyd or.
Speaker 1 (52:50):
In the present Canelo or usik As two examples of
Crawford or Crawford or Crawford.
Speaker 3 (52:56):
But the thing about is the way you build your
Hall of fame, candidacy, your resume. If you will, sometimes
it's because you beat a lot of Hall of famers.
I mean, Pacyao and Floyd, for example, have beaten tons
of Hall of famers. Pacyao beat many of the Hall
of famers that he beat when they were at their
best or still in their primes. Whereas you know, a
lot of guys have great names on the resume, but
(53:16):
didn't necessarily beat them when they were at their abstute best.
Now Crawford is in a situation where again it's not
his fault. It wasn't like he was avoiding guys, but
he doesn't have the caliber of names on the record. Yes,
he won titles in a lot of the weight classes,
but for example, when he became undisputed at one forty,
and again not Crawford's fault, he beat Julius and Dongo
(53:36):
who was undefeated, but was in the right place at
the right time. Let's just be honest. And Dongo never
did anything of real serious caliber. And you know, he
just got he was in the right position, and Crawford
obviously took advantage of it and fought him for the
undisputed And by the way, I was there that night
and Lincoln, Nebraska was an unbelievable crowd and a very
very special night to watch him do what he did
(53:58):
and just destroy and to go but again, and don
go forget about being a Hall of Famer. Won't even
be on the ballot. So you asked yourself the other guy.
So there's two ways to do it. You either beat
the superstar other Hall of Fame guys, or you just
rack up one win after the other. I remember having
a conversation years ago with Shelley Finkel when he was
managing of Vladimir Klitchkow, and Klitchkow was in a real
(54:20):
pickle because he was a dominating heavyweight champion, but there
were not big names to fight. You know, he was
trying to find a big fight. He says to me
one time, I'm paraphrasing, you know, what can we do?
You know we can't there's no big name for us
to fight right now. Joshua wasn't a thing. You know.
This is before Fury had emerged, and obviously he ultimately
lost the theory. This is like when he was doing
(54:40):
his thing as in his second title reign, winning every
single round much less you know the fights himself, I said,
the only thing you can do is just line them
up and knock them down. And he just went and systematically,
one after the other after the other, all the top
names that were available to him, whether you liked them
or you didn't, he just beat everybody easily. And that's
what Terrence Crawford has done primarily, is whoever was there,
(55:01):
he's beating them and doing so in a decisive manner.
There are not fights that you can look at in
Terrence Crawford. Is there a single fight off the top
of my head. I can't think of a single one
where you would look at the results say, well, you know,
maybe he didn't really win that one. No, because he's
either knocking the guys out or he's winning decisively on
the scorecards. And the Arrow Spence one was. You know,
if there is a Hall of Famer on his.
Speaker 1 (55:21):
That's the most accomplished guy, and he destroyed him.
Speaker 3 (55:24):
And I do think that as time goes by and
when Arrow becomes eligible and people do their homework and
look back, you know, his resume and his career will age. Well.
It's not that loss was terrible, not the loss the self,
but the way that it happened was a rough way
to go. But Arrow was a very accomplished fighter. He'd
did a lot of good guys. That's the only loss
of his career. He was United States.
Speaker 1 (55:45):
But you wouldn't say at this moment he's locked certain.
He certainly wasn't lock certain before the Crawford, before the
Crawford on his Puti fight. And the only point I'm
making is you're about to fight one of the all
timers of the last twenty five.
Speaker 2 (55:59):
Years plus who is a lock certain Hall of famer.
That's the point. That's what you're saying. He knows that
he knows what's at.
Speaker 1 (56:06):
Stake, and we got plenty of time to go back
and forth, because I'm going to have plenty on what
are we doing here that he is moving up to
fight it. But that's for down the road, that's for
fight time, fight week, and when we get to all
of that's it was good.
Speaker 2 (56:18):
It was good to have you with Terrence.
Speaker 1 (56:20):
Crawford there, we will say to the audience here on
pod You can see that interview coming up later on
the YouTube page, but you heard it here first.
Speaker 2 (56:29):
On the podfeed. We do a good job of hopping.
Speaker 1 (56:31):
Back and forth with exclusives on our There is actually
a method to what we're doing here on our podcasts
and our YouTube features and things that we have.
Speaker 2 (56:40):
All Right, a couple of fight news items.
Speaker 1 (56:42):
I know that the Matchroom and de Zonne fight cards
are being rolled out now for September and October coming up.
What stands out here for you out of what we
have in the coming months here in the fall in
particular form into.
Speaker 3 (57:00):
His own Well, like you said, they announced four shows.
Two of them will take place on September sixth, one
on October eleventh, one on October seventeenth, and they'll have
other shows also. And this does not include, for example,
the card they already had previously announced, which is the
vacant IBF welterweight title fight that will take place in Ireland,
the rematch between was it Lewis Crocker, So that's already
(57:23):
on the schedule, But these are just the new ones
that they just announced in the last few days. For me,
it's sort of very middling, to be quite honest, but
for the British fans it's probably a bigger deal. So
it's very British oriented. Three of the four cards are
UK fights, so one of them is the first one,
kicking off September sixth. The main event is Pat Pat McCormick,
who's seven to zero hot, hot up and comer in
(57:43):
the UK but a little older at age thirty, but
well known because he won the silver medal for Great
Britain and the delayed twenty twenty Olympics, so he's going
to headline on that particular show. He'll be taken on
Miguel Para, not a guy with a lot of experience,
but you know we've talked about him many times. This
is Matt Room taking one of the touted brit fighters
and bringing in a pretty unknown Mexican and we already
(58:06):
know the story there most a lot of times.
Speaker 2 (58:08):
It has not gone well several times.
Speaker 3 (58:10):
Correct, yeah, correct, So that that will kick off their
day on September the sixth, and then later after that
show they'll shift the cameras and the action to Los Moyches, Mexico,
where the newly crowned IBF Junior lightweight champion Eduardo Sugar Nunias,
who was so exciting in such a heavy end. It
has just won that title that was vacant in Japan
(58:32):
a few weeks ago, a month or so ago. So
he's taken on the well traveled Christopher Diaz from Puerto Rico.
So it's Mexico versus Puerto Rico. DSS challenged for the
title in the past and come up a little bit short.
So that's that's a home fight for Nunias. Then they
come back on October eleven. Now this this is just
one of these like rubber necking kind of fights. You
(58:52):
gotta watch it. It doesn't mean anything. It's not the
guy's not gonna fight for the heavyweight title. It's not
poundful bat but it just has the chance to be
a massive train wreck, big knockout, slobber knock or type
of fight. And that's the very popular, beloved David Allen
who was sort of reborn a little bit against arslen
Beck Machmdouf, who is a big, strapping fighter with no chin,
(59:14):
with heavy punching power. Like I said, to one of
the matchroom people I was talking about, I said, that
fight is just crazy, and it was the way it
was discovered. It's a mad fight, I guess mad. That's
like a British thing. And we both were pretty much
of the agreement that, you know, don't get up and
go take a leak or get a beer because the
fight can be over in like a minute or less,
(59:35):
I mean, or or around or two. I mean it's
a type of fight where don't go in thinking we're
seeing the sweet signs. Someone's getting drilled in that fight.
Who knows how long it will take. In the immortal
words of Don King, how long. Not long? But uh yeah,
so there's that as the main event. So that'll be fun.
It doesn't mean a whole lot, but whatever. And then, uh,
this is the terms for the for the British uh for
(59:56):
the British boxing scene, if you will. This is sort
of a pretty decent but you got Kiaren Conway taking
on the young up and coming George Littard. It's for
Conway's British and Commonwealth middleweight titles. In terms of the
British scene, this is a good matchup of those of
that level fighter see if somebody can take the next up.
Certainly the first big test of Lizard's career. He's undefeated
(01:00:17):
at the moment, hasn't been pro for that long, and
so that again, if you're a British boxing fan, that
may have a bunch of attractive doubts for you. Otherwise,
you know, maybe not so much. I am interested to
watch Sugar Nunyas. I think he's a dynamite fighter, always exciting.
Christopher Diez may not be at the top level anymore,
but always comes to fight and will definitely give an effort.
(01:00:38):
I don't know how long he's gonna last against Sugar Nunyas.
And for rubber necking purposes, you know, David Allen against Machmandouve.
You know that's that's that's carnage right there.
Speaker 4 (01:00:49):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:00:49):
And one other news item, and that is Queensberry has
a couple of light heavyweights, including the prominent British light
heavyweight Joshua Bwatzi that they've announced that they brought on board.
And what about the other fighter they brought on board
as well?
Speaker 3 (01:01:03):
They signed a Bwazi and they also signed the European
champion Bradley Reya, who is coming off having won that title.
Both of them had been with other companies. Biazzi obviously
is the bigger name. He had at one point at
the WBO's interim title at light heavyweight. He was an
Olympian and received a medal. He's been with pretty much
Everybody's been with Mattroom, He's been with Queens He's down
(01:01:23):
with Queensberry. He had been with Boxer, He's been around
the block Boxer. His actit from Boxer was like everybody
sort of knew that was happening, and the rumors and
the reporting that he was going to sign with Queensberry
was as common knowledge as anything in the business. But
now they made it official and so you know, Queensberry
is one of the premier promoters between in terms of
Britain and really the world, between them and Matroom. They
(01:01:46):
have signed Bowazzi. They have signed Bradley Reya, who is
Biwazzi's nineteen and one with thirteen knockouts. Ray is twenty
one and one with twenty one and one with ten knockouts.
Scored a decision victory over Shakan pitter H in his
last fight in June to win the vacant European title,
and so between those two guys, they also promote Willie Hutchinson.
(01:02:07):
They obviously had been involved with the big cards that
have taken place in Saudi Arabia that involved Better b
Of and Bevil. They're looking to line up guy, you know,
because once once that third fight between Bivil and Better
Bam is over, and we're still not sure exactly where
that or when that's going to take place, but the
division probably will open up because mandatories will be called,
titles will be stripped, titles will become vacant, and then
(01:02:28):
and they're hoping to put these type of guys Biwazzi,
uh and and and and Ray in position to fight
for these I mean uh Biwazzi's only loss was a
fantastic fight against Callum Smith, who is a former champion.
So the point is the light heavyweight division there's some
action there and they're they're they're lining things up to
make sure they've got two of the better contenders uh
(01:02:48):
under their banner. And and Buatzi and and Ray are
are two of those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:02:52):
And Biwatzi lost that fight to Callum Smith and it
was on the undercard of the Better be Bevil rematch.
I believe in February earlier this year. Ye.
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
So.
Speaker 3 (01:03:01):
And also and in terms of that particular fight, that
was a spectacular fight, I mean, a tremendous battle. And also,
and I don't think this is out of the realm
of possibility. He's with Queensberry.
Speaker 4 (01:03:11):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:03:12):
Queensberry also is the promoter of Willie Hutchinson, and he
has a very close decision against Willy Hutchinson. That was
a majority decision. And so again I don't think it's
gonna And that was for the interim title. This was
back in twenty twenty four. At some point, you know,
doing a rematching Wawatsee and Willie Hutchinson would seem to
make sense, both in terms of titles, fan interest, excitement,
(01:03:34):
and some sort of stakes. So I think that's a
possibility down the road. But anyway, two good signings for Queensberry,
who's you know, been out there looking to sign guys.
Speaker 1 (01:03:46):
