Speaker 5 (02:12):
Oh wow, We're not worthy? We're not worthy?
Speaker 1 (02:16):
A great call. I love all pop culture references on
this show, Bob Letter, and we've got some.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
So I got a whole bunch lined up for today.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
So okay, oh oh good, I can't wait. Well, Bob,
we finally made it to the preseason finale. This is
the last game that counts, but sorta doesn't. Count and
then everything's on the line for Week one Jet Steelers.
Are you feeling it in your body? Are you getting
those butterflies or whatever other feelings are happening at this
(02:44):
point with football right here on the precipice.
Speaker 5 (02:47):
I'm already waiting. I can't wait for your postgame Sheldon.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Maybe.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yeah, those have been fun. Those have been a lot
of fun.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
By the way, I tuned in last week after after
the Saturday game. Yeah, I tell you, it really is
terrific to be able to immediately go from the game
and to hear you and other people analyzing, you know,
what they saw and that sort of stuff. It really
it makes a big difference. And so I don't know,
(03:15):
you've been kind of inferring things. They have been holding
you back from doing that. So I'm glad whatever was
interferences were that they are.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
That's it.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
But more importantly to get started today, the rumor mail
has because I was taking a little nappy yesterday that
your daughter made a cameo appearance yesterday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
She did, She did. She So what I try to
do is balance the two lives of all the football
and then squeeze in some family and where I can
and my fiance let me know that. I don't know
if this happens all across the country, but randomly in
our local town here roswego in a Low's parking lot
down the street. There's this sort of traveling circus of
(03:58):
Jurassic parkna sores things, so these animatronic dinosaur robots, and
my daughter is very much into dinosaurs. So my fiance
overheard this and said, hey, can we get it in?
Because I do baseball games at night and jet shows
throughout the day, so we're trying to find the right
pocket a time where I could just get it in
and then head to some of my other work. And
(04:20):
we were able to do it, and yeah, she came
over and jumped on at the end of the show.
It was going like Dad, come on, man, hurry up,
and I'm like, okay, okay, okay, Hey do you want
to say bye to everybody? Threw her up there and
I said, oh, do you want to say goodbye? And
she sort of has like a whole phrase when she
says goodbye, said goodbye, kissed the microphone and said.
Speaker 6 (04:39):
See you late.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Everybody, basically blue kisses. So oh yeah, she's she's a
real charm and she loved all the dinosaur stuff.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
So I don't want to I don't want it to
lay us from talking about the great importance of the
obviously game. The bloods are running in parallel from what
you told you before we went online, that's true. And
also my grandkids yesterday went to the Sesame Street Live
show in New York.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Oh cool, wow.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Because they are obsessed with the Sesame Street characters naturally.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Well, I just got to say, Bob, then somebody's doing
a good job in your family of raising that Sesame
Street is important enough where that still rings for children.
So that's I don't know if they're still doing stuff.
I don't know, but I used to love Sesame Street
when I was again, so that's awesome.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
Great under football.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
There we go, So let's get to it. So we
do have the Jets Eagles preseason finale again. Kickoff is
set for seven thirty tonight. The Jets are two point favorite.
For those who dabble in preseason action, why the hell
wouldn't you, And it looks like the majority of the
starters are not going to play. According to Aaron Glenn
earlier this week, he sort of left it open that
some could play. Maybe the competition battles, if any still exists,
(05:49):
could be there. What do you make of the decision, Bob,
that Aaron Glenn's not going to be playing his starters,
most of them, if if not all of them, in
this game tonight against Evil.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
I think he said it when he announced that, and
that is the practices, which he runs pretty pretty onerously,
are his real preseason tests for his players, and that's
apparently how he makes a lot of his judgments. Now
you can take it, you know, a cup of tea
(06:19):
when he says, well, you know, we really see what
Feels does here in practice that you guys don't see,
and so we're comfortable with what he's doing and how
we're trying to make that work. The only one who
really needs the work is Feels, at least for the
pleasure and the scrutiny of fans. But that doesn't really matter,
(06:44):
you know, when you're getting ready for the regular season.
And I guess maybe the only one other than that
that you want to give a little bit more experiences
are rookie right tackle. But I think he's shown enough,
particularly against the Giants last week, where he held up okay,
that they know everything they need to know. There are
so many players on the bubble for every team. But
(07:08):
I've often wondered, you know, because I'm not a football technician.
I didn't play even at a low, even a high
school level like you did. But they're looking for certain characteristics,
and they certainly didn't see a lot of good stuff
less Saturday against the Giants, So I think they're looking
(07:29):
for vast areas of improvement from certain players tomorrow night,
because you've got to have adequate backups, you know, when
you look at this season. The thought that occurred to
me today is that people get hurt playing pickleball, and
they're playing the violent game of pro football and for
(07:50):
seventeen times during you know, during the next four months.
So you know, you want to keep them healthy as
best you can, and you want to keep them spirited.
You want to keep them with their heads lifted up.
And I think from what we've seen in preseason off
the field, Aaron Glenn's doing a pretty good job of
doing that. So you know, the one thing I wanted
(08:13):
to look, which I will look while you keep talking,
is the Jets preseason record against the Philadelphia Eagles, because
aside from one game that I remember them winning a
couple of years ago. They usually don't even beat them
in preseason, much less than the regular season.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Right, well, the regular season for the first time ever
they beat them. They were oh to twelve against the
Eagles prior to the Week six Eagles game where Tony
Adams had the pick at the end where the Jets
ended up winning that game for the first time ever
against the philadelph Eagles. One of those weird quirks or
the Jets and Eagles hadn't played that many times in
the regular season. They played. They've played every year of
the preseason for a very long time.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
And you know the first time, the first time they
played them was is in the preseason in nineteen sixty
eight and it ended up, you know, in fisticuffs with
Johnny Sample and they both got thrown out of the
game and that sort of thing. So it's always a
spirited rivalry against the people from down south from itself
(09:11):
so now south of Jersey.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
Yeah, that's true. By the way, there's just you mentioned
all the injuries and things that can happen playing pickleball
or football, Like, we've got another harsh reminder of that.
The Jets opponent for Week one, the Pittsburgh Steelers their
first round draft choice, Dereck Harmon, the very talented defensive tackle.
He had a towel draped over his head, was carted
off the field that was clutching at his knee. Now,
(09:34):
Mike Tomlin says it's just a sprain, and when they
asked him for specifics, he said, I said it was
just a spray, And the way that that happened doesn't
seem like it's a sprain at all. I only play
a doctor sometimes here on the show, but that just
goes to show you. So now, another critical loss for
Pittsburgh ahead of the season opener because he was expected
to be a big piece of that squad they have
(09:56):
a lot of We talked about the Jets interior defensive
line is use and they address that this week, which
we could get your take on here, Bob. But now
the Steelers have lost something here, So a gut check
for them. But what did you think of that? You know,
Darren Moojie getting very aggressive this week and a couple
of dts to the realm.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
I actually wrote myself a couple of notes.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
That I want to, oh please, I'm glad I asked you.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
I thought there was one negative to the whole thing, okay,
and other than that, I thought there were two or
three real positives.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Negative is I always have concern about picking up another
team's players that they have decided are not good enough,
you know, to play for them.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Sure.
Speaker 5 (10:40):
On the other hand, and let me just clear here, okay,
on the other hand, okay, the kid they got from
Cleveland was a seventh round pick, and we essentially gave
up what a sixth round pick?
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Yeah, really, just it's Jawan Briggs and I give up
a pick swap, so we're just going to be picking
a little bit later in the draft next year.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
And we and we what we had four six round
picks going into the season, right, correct, Yes, so we
traded away two of them this week.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Yes, the two that we just straight up traded away
were to the Vikings, although one of those was a
pick swap too, because we've got a seventh rounder. So
really we've only given up if you're just talking about
loss of picks. We've got a given up one sixth
round pick that went to the Vikings. The other two
parts of those trades were swapped, so the Jets would
just pick later in those two respective rounds.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
Well, getting back to to what you know, to the
to the moves, yes, there are there are a couple
of different ways to really look at that. First of all, Yeah,
I agree with you that that our general manager has shown,
you know, some real resourcefulness here, and I'm sure that
Aaron had a lot to do with it too, in
(11:51):
trying to firm up the defense, because the offense is
only going to go as far as the defense takes them. Sure,
here's something I mean. I heard a lot of people
give a lot of opinions and I'm going to repeat
some of it in the next couple of minutes, but
one thing that no one did say is it is
so critical to have an incredibly strong defense to give
(12:12):
the offense more chances. Because what we've seen in practice
with the statistics that the reporters have given us, is
that Fields will go out there and he'll tear it
up on one series, and then he'll come out for
another series and do nothing and look terrible. So it's
(12:33):
going to be really important to give the offense as
many opportunities as we can possibly give them, so strengthen
that defense. And clearly they thought and based on last
year and our woeful ability to stop runs that they
thought the defensive tackle area needed to be firmed up.
What I'm really hoping for, even beyond the two deals
(12:55):
that they made, is that some of the second year
undrafted free age and set they signed last year to
much hurrads developed significantly to the point where even they
become part an important part of the rotation, because they're
going to need that as well. Again, if you can
get hurt and pickleball, imagine, you know, being on the
(13:16):
defensive or offensive line for seventeen games, You're gonna need
a lot of bodies, and you want to keep them
fresh too, because again it's the season and how long
you have to be on the field. So hopefully the
defense is so good that they will be able to
hold up, keep them in games, turn over to the offense,
(13:37):
maybe even on a good number of occasions, put them
in good field position. So at the very least, maybe
we get a field goal because now we have an
accurate field goal kicker. So that's one of the impressions. Secondly,
getting back to what we got, trading six round picks
for a guy who's going to start at defensive tackle
for US and who was starting at defensive tackle from
(14:00):
Minnesota and who I remember being a beast against us
when he was with Buffalo a couple of years ago.
You would have never gotten that type of quality, you know,
for a six round pick. Plus they're paying half his
salary this year. Yeah, right, So that's you know that
that's a real plus. And the other one, the kid
from Cleveland apparently was so good at the end of
(14:21):
last year that a lot of people in Cleveland and
I haven't had a chance to check it out yet,
but they've been wondering aloud, why do we give this
guy up? I mean, he was tearing other teams apart
the last three four games of last season, and unlike
Major League Baseball, there is no you know, late point
in the season when you're playing scrubs or a lot
(14:41):
of Triple A players, so you're playing the big boys,
you know, for seventeen games. And if he was really
shown great improvement as the year went on, that's a plus. Now,
credit to them. They've got obviously enough depth that they
didn't think they needed him, but you know, we can
make use of them. And again, hopefully that's going to
st thank us in the middle of the defensive line,
(15:02):
that it's going to make a big difference.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
Yeah, I certainly hope. So I'll go back to your
other point, right, One of your hopes is last year
a lot was made about all the undrafted free agents
the Jet signed Eric Watts, Brada McGregor, Leonard Taylor, the
third and LT three showed a little bit. He had
like a second and a half last year and showed
some pass rush jutes, so he showed something. But Eric
(15:25):
Watts had no meaningful statistics, Brada McGregor had no meaningful statistics,
and they were on the team all year. So now
we fast forward a year and they're in that group.
Now that the Jets brought these two guys in, Jawan
Briggs and Harrison Phillips are obviously making the roster. They're
taking two spots that weren't available, so that means two
other people are getting kicked out of the club. We
did see Faderian Mathis get released earlier this week, but
(15:46):
he's not going to be the only defensive tackle that
gets cut. And they have another undrafted free agent kid
this year that I liked a lot coming out of
the draft, Peyton Page Jetta Clemson a very talented guy
who didn't get a lot of opportunities at Clemson because
of the depth. So is Braden McGregor, is Eric Wats
or one of these guys going to finally step up
Because a lot of people chattered about these guys, but
we didn't see a whole lot of production, and I've
(16:08):
yet to really hear their names much. Even when I
was at Jets joint practice, you know, with the giants,
like a week or two ago, I didn't hear or
say their name very often at all. So are they
even making the roster? I think that's a big question.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Well, I think a lot of the the udfas from
last year probably will stick and page they'll try to
get onto the practice squad because much less will be
known about him and that will make it easier to
sneak him through waivers. The other guys had some exposure,
they have an experience from last year, and they also
(16:44):
have draft designations from a couple of years ago, which
again is one of the reasons why the Jets made
the trade with Cleveland, Because, as I think you pointed
out yesterday or someone else did, but I'll give you
the credit for sure. Yeah, yeah, why not? Probably there
were a lot of scouting reports and a lot of
anticipation of how he was going to go in the
(17:05):
draft a year ago. So there were a lot of
people who still looked at and said, you know, we
could have drafted that kid last year, and if nothing else,
let's pick him up on waivers, you know, on the
cutdown day, and if we don't think he's anything, we'll
just release him. It won't cost us anything. Yeah, So
I think they're in good I think they're in good shape.
(17:26):
We know they're much better again on the defensive side
than the offensive side. I would like to see them
strengthen their linebacker corps a little bit. And you can
never have a good enough good corners and safeties again
because those are also high injury positions between the tackling
and all the leg and knee and other injuries because
(17:49):
of all the running they have to do. So anyway, no,
that is true.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
So I would like some reinforced depth at a couple
of those positions. One position, apparently they've been kicking the
tire bob. And this is not new. We me and
you have talked about this many fridays, you know where
don't be.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
Indie and I went, but went at it back and
forth three months ago or how long it was.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Yeah, you did, And apparently the Jets agree with you,
Bob and not Indy about the need for another wide receiver.
NFL insider Extraordinard Diana Roussini shared a couple of days
ago that the Jets were among several teams that were
interested in exploring and making calls for wide receivers that
are available via trade, and Tom Pelliser reiterated that last
(18:30):
night on The Rich Eisen Show. He mentioned it again
that the Jets continue to explore that market. Obviously, that's
not surprising because Garrett Wilson's really good, but the Jets
search for a guy opposite of him has been challenging,
apparently throughout this offseason. So what do you make of
the Jets apparently being aggressive in these waters. If it's
not a trade, it will certainly, I imagine, be in
(18:53):
whatever today is, today's Friday, so would be serious Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,
so Tuesday's cutdown day a Wednesday. The next day by
noon is waiver wire. So in between that Tuesday Wednesday action,
I imagine that's where they will also be aggressively filtering
through all the thousand plus roster cuts in the National
Football League to see if there's a receiver worth a
damn to add to the squad.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
Well, it's a couple of things here. First of all,
everybody was saying, oh, San Francisco has a surplus, Green
Bay has a surplus, and then San Francisco went out
and made a deal with Kansas City to get a
wide receiver.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
I don't think their surplus is that great. There were
experts Glory yesterday who were talking about this with you,
and clearly there are names out there. Some of them
have blemishes, you know, like Lave who apparently might be
one concussion away from not being able to play anymore. Great,
(19:46):
lots of fear. I think they'll pick up somebody off
off the off the waiver wire if if they can
get them past the six teams that have for DIBs
on those guys. Correct, correct, And that's the other problem. Mean,
that's why they made the trade with Cleveland.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
I don't know how desperate those six teams are, you know,
for wide receivers. I can't see them really giving up
a high draft pick, and by that I mean anything
higher than a five you know, for a wide receiver,
because I don't think the quality is going to make
that much difference. Again, they didn't get any defensive tackles
(20:29):
in the draft. They went out and made a couple
of trades. They they got a wide receiver, you know,
in the draft. But you know, Arian Smith has a
lot of assets and he's also got a lot of greenishness.
So you know they're going to have to put up
with him learning, learning the NFL ways and hoping that
he can make a couple of big plays here and there.
(20:51):
So I don't really expect very much to happen unless
there's a shocker. Here's another thought about it. Minnesota needs
a wide receiver. Yes, if they put somebody, if they
make someone available, Uh, you know, green Bay is going
to try excuse me, I'm getting it wrong. Green Bay
(21:14):
has a surplus. Supposedly Minnesota needs a wide receiver. Green
Bay is going to do everything they can to stop
Minnesota from getting that wide receiver that they think they need. Yeah,
so that may put the Jets in a better position
among the teams that are vying to, you know, to
get that extra White Point's a good point. That's a possibility.
(21:39):
The kid in Indianapolis. He's too high draft pick from
a year ago for them to just let him go
for very little. Washington is not going to give up
McLaurin for for a bag of potatoes. So you know,
most of the guys that that have been mentioned are
going to have a pretty high price gag on them,
and so we'll have to see. But you know it, well,
(22:03):
I hate I hate to keep bringing up things that
remind me of things that wrote about and Beyond Broadway Joe.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Wait, wait, can you bring that book up again? What
is this book again?
Speaker 5 (22:14):
It's called Beyond Somebody.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Okay, wait, let me bring this full screen here. I'm sorry,
it's hard for me to see Beyond Broadway, Joe, the
Super Bowl team that changed football. Wait you left the
book a little bit higher, oh, Bob Letterer, Oh interesting, okay.
Speaker 5 (22:28):
Interesting guy. Yeah, yeah, it's.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
Just available for purchase, Bob, what's here.
Speaker 5 (22:32):
He spent three years researching?
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Oh wow, that's impressive. So yeah, is that book available
real quick.
Speaker 5 (22:38):
Bob, Amazon and any of your favorite online bookstores.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Okay, cool, cool, cool.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
That's the rumor. I heard that from your daughter yesterday.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Oh wow, okay, well you know, so yeah, before.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
The sixty eight before sixty eight sixty nine season, the
Jets did something they had never done before, and that
is they made trades for two very very critical players.
Bob Telamini for the offensive line because they were a
little thin there. And they got Babe Early from Boston
to back up Joe because they'd never had a veteran
quarterback backing them up. And speaking of backup quarterbacks, and
(23:17):
I'm gritting my teeth as I watched this every every day. Now,
how much was Jackson dark being talked about? Okay, look,
got a potential Jet pick in January fifth.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
You do you remember the narrative from that, Bob so okay,
people were talking about Jets to the Jets. You remember
how Jets fans reacted.
Speaker 5 (23:37):
To that, and they went who needs him?
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Person did that? And people And even when the rumors
got a little bit hot right before the draft, one
of his coaches at Old Miss and also that have
some influencers something joined Ritzemina on his podcast. They talked
about it. They talked about how much the Jets were
fitting things and people Jet fans booed those rumors. They said, oh, discuss,
(24:00):
we don't want anything to do with this Jackson Dart fella,
and well he looks pretty good.
Speaker 5 (24:05):
Well in their defense, and we have to defend other
Jet fans. Of course, I think they were I think
they were afraid at picking him number seven. And if
they had done that, forget about Membo and how much
he was needed. If they had done that, there would
have been a riot in and around Met Life by
Jet fans, not by Giant fans, because he just wasn't
(24:28):
rated that highly. But the Giants did what the Jets
did a couple of years ago with Jermaine Johnson. They
traded up into the first round.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
Yeah, with the kid.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
And you know, you do have to as a Jet fan,
as much as I do not like the Giants, you
have to give, you know, Jackson Dart his his credit
because look at the kind of throws he's making, and
look at kind of the poise he seems to have,
and even more importantly and is very very important, he
(24:58):
seems to have won over a lot of the Yeah,
you better learn to slide.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
He got whacked like a pinata yesterday.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
So young Fields is the master at that. Maybe he
has a extra time and he can come up, go
over and perhaps teach him how to do it. But anyway,
he Jackson Dark seems to have won over his teammates.
They are they are really coming around and supporting him
and saying all the good things about him. And it
(25:27):
doesn't sound like it's just being nice about him. It
sounds like they really believe in what the kid can do.
So between the two veteran quarterbacks he's got over there,
I think he's going to learn a lot and when
he does get his chance, and it probably won't be
the smoothest transition, but I think, you know, they could
have another Eli Manning situation.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
And wouldn't that be a wonderful thing to have if
you're the New York Giants. To get Speaking with our
Jets historian Bob Leeder here on Boy Green Daal, it's
a game day episode. We have Jets Eagles tonight at
seven thirty. We'll open up the phone lunch here in
just a moment. But here's why I think, Bob, you're right.
We're talking about wide receivers right, and Jet fans are
salivating over the sexy names that are out there, and
we've mentioned a lot of them, Jamis and Williams, chrits Olave.
(26:09):
This name is name this name. But I think you're
right at the end of the day that the Jets
are not going to expand a high draft choice because
as much as I believe in Justin Fields and the
Jets say they believe in Justin Fields, what the Jets
have is an alternative option with one of their high
draft choices by not training it. It's the back door.
(26:29):
If Justin Fields flops like a pancake, then the Jets
have that first round pick next year to say, hey,
we could go get our own guy if this doesn't
work out, so it's you. And if it does work out,
Justin Fields is the guy. Great, we could use that
first round pick on something to help Justin Fields. So
I think they're gonna put the cryogenically freeze that choice
(26:50):
and maybe a few of their other choices, like their
second round draft choice, and so to hold that serve
just in case they need it for some sort of
a quarterback backup plan. And I don't mean quarterback backup
plan like a QB two, which also they should probably
look into it. We could talk about that here on
the show at Tyrod Taylor's health, but no specifically to
Justin Fields. I think they're going to go all in
(27:10):
on Justin Fields. What's they're going to give him the
longest leash of all time in twenty twenty five, and
if it fails, then they'll make other decisions during the
twenty twenty six offseason. That's that's what my gut says, which,
again to your point, is why I believe you're right
that they probably will not expend one of those high
draft choices to get a pass catcher, regardless of the
sexy scenario that presents itself.
Speaker 5 (27:29):
Let me let me ask you what you think about
QB three. Yeah, we don't. We won't. We'll see more
tonight and have a better idea. Yeah, but I think
we've seen enough to know whether you know, those two
guys are going to be good enough, you know, to
be the guy who has to step in because Tyrod
looks you know, very very if he, if he, if he,
(27:53):
you know, every day that he doesn't come back and
they don't say, yeah, he'll be ready to go week one,
because if he's not ready to go week one, chances
are he may not be ready to go week two
or week three. So you've got to have reliable, you know,
backup plan. Although maybe they don't. Maybe they really don't
(28:13):
as I think about it, because if the plan is
to go run heavy with your starting quarterback, if your
starting quarterback gets hurt and you bring in your second,
your third string, they're going to continue to go run
heavy until the other team stops. And in fact, that's
really We'll talk next week, obviously in the week after
about how the season looks. But what's gonna happen? This
(28:36):
is my big question. What's gonna happen when the other
teams decide, Okay, they're just gonna run and run and run,
and we're gonna stack the bucks and force him to
throw and you know, so we'll see we'll get a
good But I wonder because I was watching the Giants
fourth string quarterback, who you kind of like from New
(28:56):
Jersey last night and wondering because he does look like
he's he's got poise. I watched when he was in there,
and he's got a decent enough arm. Yeah, and he's
got what a couple of years of experience.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Now he does.
Speaker 5 (29:09):
But you know, I got I got a feeling that
the Giants are and are going to keep four quarterbacks okay,
and hold him just in case some other team gets
desperate enough that they're willing to give him some decent
draft capital for him. So we'll see here it is.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
Here's the autograph football of Tommy Devita. Look at a
TD thirteen thirteen. Yeah, it was his jersey, never here
at Syracuse, and again I covered him here at Syracuse,
and then he transferred it for his final season to Illinois,
and I ran before COVID. I ran a charity event
every April in the draft where I would go to
(29:50):
some restaurant or place and I would host a live
show talking about the draft and Jets and anything else
I wanted to talk about. And when I tried to
use my connections to the sports world to give me
autographed items or other cool items to donate, and one
hundred percent of the proceeds would go to the Wounded
Warrior Project. So I knew a couple guys on the
Syracuse football team. I said, hey, you know, can you
(30:12):
get me a couple of autographs like here's one, for example,
Tommy DeVito. I imagine that would revengeance here locally. Can
he get them to sign a ball or something? They said, sure,
I'll get it for you, and they give me this
football I'm like, oh, phenomenal, terrific. So we start off
the charity with a online auction to start to show
people what items are going to be up for bids,
and I show this ball. I'm Tommy DeVito autograph football.
(30:34):
Maybe now, folks, this is pre nil nil does not
exist yet. I get a lovely email from Syracuse University saying, hey, buddy,
take that football off immediately, and I'm like, what are
you talking about. This is from charity. They said, if
you don't take that football off Tommy DeVito. And for
folks who don't understand, Tommy DeVito was a prize recruit
(30:56):
for Syracuse. He was championed as the safe and they said,
if you don't take this football down, you may make
Tommy DeVito ineligible play football at Syracuse. And I went,
oh Jesus, okay, no problem. My apologies. Didn't mean to
get you know, torches and pitchforks outside my house because somehow,
for a charity event, I made your star quarterback ineligible.
(31:18):
My fault. I'll take it down now. To Syracuse's credit,
they said, basically, keep this football forever and never do
anything with it. So now just sit here on my
desk but thankful to Syracuse that you know, in a
very harmless situation, was all for charity. They ended up saying, hey,
we'll get the head coach at the time, Dino Babers.
He'll sign a football and I will express mail it
to you right now. And well, if.
Speaker 5 (31:41):
By some chance the Jets pick him up this week,
oh you can. You can make him part of part
of the bid.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
No, that you're trying to raise for your dad. Man,
when't that hit up? Like nobody's business? To have that
story in this football that would be incredible.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
It reminds me, and it's only slight related, but when
I was a kid and I used to watch the
Muscular Dystrophy telethons with Jerry Lewis whatever, and he would
encourage you to do some local stuff. So my twin
brother and I and I was probably twelve or thirteen,
we decided we would have some sort of a fundraiser
(32:21):
for them. And there was a little local baseball field
that we that we held it at, and I asked
the giantscuse me, I asked the Mets and the Yankees
to send me something that I could give away as
a raffle or whatever. Yeah, and the Yankee set me
personally autograph pictures of Mantle Maris Elston Howard, why do
(32:45):
you ford?
Speaker 7 (32:46):
Wow?
Speaker 5 (32:47):
Okay? And I took one look at that. I looked
at my twin brother, and I said, we're not raffling.
Speaker 6 (32:52):
This stuff off.
Speaker 5 (32:54):
The stuff is great, and so I still have it.
It's a price and sorry beautiful. Uh but but you
know it's sometimes well you're you're an adult, so you're
in a better position not to be, you know, avaricious
about it.
Speaker 1 (33:12):
But anyway, it's wait a second, wait a second, Wait
a second, Bob, you have a twin brother.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
Yes, I have a twin brother.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
How has that not come up on the show?
Speaker 5 (33:20):
He doesn't. Hey, he looks more like you than he
looks like me.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Okay, so you guys don't look exactly this.
Speaker 5 (33:26):
No fraternal he's he's older. He's my elder by eleven minutes.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Okay. Wow, that's a man. What a bomb dropop? What's
your what's your twin brother's name?
Speaker 5 (33:36):
Philip?
Speaker 6 (33:37):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (33:37):
Okay, I was it was like Bobby or Robert or
like well.
Speaker 5 (33:41):
I worked by Bobby and he was just Philip Philip.
Everybody else in my family, Margie, Margie Susie. Okay, Oh,
David and and my brother Philip lives in Rochester.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
New York, New York. Oh my god, he's.
Speaker 5 (33:59):
A retired professor at the University of Broadcaster.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Wow. Wow, esteemed brother. Wow, that's that's terrific. Okay, I
like that. Wow're so you know, Bob, every time we
do a show with you, every week we learn a
little bit more. We we take another layer off that onion.
It's been a fascinating journey these last couple of months. Anyway, Yes,
all right, everybody, let's do this. Let's open up the
(34:23):
phone line so we could ask more pressing questions about
Bob's family history and god knows what else could possibly
come up. Your phone calls next.
Speaker 8 (34:30):
Ball of Green by.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
Hoky, just football man, Budd, Buzy Buggy, you don't just
football club.
Speaker 9 (34:52):
Steam, the Special Cheez watch Chess football with my Green
Jay Gee Gee Chess.
Speaker 5 (35:01):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
The phone lines are open. Maybe this is a Boy
Green Daily, a daily New York Jets video show also
available where you get your podcast. My name is Paul
Aston Junior, aka Boy Green. We right now, at this
very moment in time, have two hundred and thirty people
in the room. One hundred of those are on YouTube.
That's YouTube dot com. Slash boy Green two five appreciate
those who watch the show anywhere, let alone here on
(35:28):
YouTube and wait a second here thirty three likes. One
hundred people in the room. What in Tarnacian people? Hit
the guys durned like button? For God's sake, What the
hell are you doing it there? You're holding that lights
on me? Huh, it's all it's what is it? The economy?
Let's get some lines going for the love of everything.
That's only hit the like button. It's free to do.
(35:50):
It's right there on the screen. Yeah, you watching the show,
I'm talking to you. What the video, whether it's live
or after the fact. Come on, man, we've gotta first
come man in the season, Come on, man, any of you.
Our wonderful co host on today's show, Bob Lederer, is
with us here, the author of Beyond Broadway, Joe, the
team that changed your football forever, and the the guy
(36:12):
that changed phone calls forever. On this show. Hep joined
us here on the program, which I bet hey.
Speaker 6 (36:17):
Paul hey, Paul hey, fellas, how's it going?
Speaker 1 (36:20):
Actually, good good morning?
Speaker 5 (36:21):
How's that? How's that? Video for my appearance coming along. Oh,
I mean it's not I'm gonna do it.
Speaker 10 (36:28):
I'm not going to wait one hundred as soon as
he clinched the playoff spot, I'm gonna think.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
All right, I'm gonna here. I'm gonna wait. I'm just
gonna keep asking because you know, if you don't ask,
you don't get well. I'm always blocked and loaded. So
any time, Bob. By the way, how's how's the Heap
Father join the Heap Father?
Speaker 10 (36:50):
Oh yeah, well, you know, I had a lot of
the heavy hitters hitting yesterday, so the Heap Father had
to make an appearance.
Speaker 6 (36:59):
You know, it's thanks to make sure other people.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Got paid who do the job. You do the job
as you get paid.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Amen.
Speaker 5 (37:07):
By the way, everybody out there, I'm going to stop
talking about my family. That's why you're not hitting the
like button.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
That must be I guess I don't know.
Speaker 10 (37:14):
What happens is sometimes people are watching it on their
TV YouTube and that doesn't that doesn't enable you to
hit the like button.
Speaker 5 (37:23):
That's true. That's what I do. That's what I do
when I'm not on the show. Yeah, there you go.
So that that won't.
Speaker 10 (37:28):
So what I do is I sometimes what I'll do
is I'll put I'll put you on and knock the
volume out on the TV, and then I'll have connection
to the show through my phone.
Speaker 6 (37:38):
That's the way to do it.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
Okay, there you go. I appreciate that.
Speaker 5 (37:41):
Yeah. Now back to the Matt Snell thing. I'm still
on that.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Please, I hope everyone continues to be.
Speaker 5 (37:48):
Thoughts about that too, for you go ahead.
Speaker 10 (37:51):
I'm thinking of another strategy. Is there any way we
get a case of books delivered to Flora in Park,
oh even there for any Jet player to pick up.
But I would really like to have a g get
a copy of that book. Not that he's going to
have a time a hell of a lot of time
to read it right now, right, but I think he
(38:13):
mightn't even know a lot of these stories already. I mean,
you know, he he's a jet through and through, But
there was there was stuff I didn't know in that book.
Speaker 5 (38:20):
I'm sure there's stuff he didn't know.
Speaker 10 (38:22):
And and I'm an old timer. I've been watching you know.
I was a jet fan in sixty eight. That's when
I was sitting down with my dad. That's when I
started how old.
Speaker 5 (38:31):
How old were you in sixty eight?
Speaker 10 (38:33):
I was five years old. Yeah, it was it was
more like I was like, uh, you know what, which
team is which?
Speaker 8 (38:42):
Dad?
Speaker 10 (38:43):
He goes, Oh, that's this team, and again I'm root
for that team, and that's how it started Alable. So anyway, Yeah,
we'll try to get those books into the hands of
those guys.
Speaker 5 (38:52):
And yeah, I got to tell you. I sent Woody
two copies separately I'm Too Different a case and talked
to his secretary each time to make sure that he'd
received it. And she told me they had gotten it,
and she wouldn't even commit to me that she'd given
it to Woody that you know, he had to make
(39:13):
that decision.
Speaker 10 (39:14):
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. The Other thing is,
is you know Kyle Clifton, the guy.
Speaker 6 (39:18):
That comes on our show sometimes? Yes, there I wonte
he calls in.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
Is Kyle?
Speaker 5 (39:23):
Is he?
Speaker 10 (39:24):
Is he one of Is he actually the Kyle Clifton
that played for the New York Jets?
Speaker 1 (39:28):
No, of course she is.
Speaker 5 (39:30):
No he's not.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
Absolutely is what are we talking about? Yeah, Kyle Clifton.
Speaker 5 (39:35):
Question I asked him when I can't When he came
on the show the first time. Are you the guy
that he was shy?
Speaker 1 (39:40):
He was shy, shy hundred pounds ago.
Speaker 10 (39:44):
The guy huge.
Speaker 5 (39:46):
I mean, he could definitely be it.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
He could be Yeah.
Speaker 10 (39:49):
I saw him sitting on I saw him with Jake Asman,
Jake Asman.
Speaker 5 (39:52):
Look like you know, like I said, I have some
thoughts after as what I In fact, I shared some
of them with Paul earlier this week. There is a
there is a letter that has been composed by a
couple of other fans, and my reaction after I look
at it was nice, try not enough smooching. You got
(40:13):
to smooch up to this guy, you know, as we
see every day with a certain person who I will
not mention, praise will get you very far if you
keep laying it on and laying it on and laying
it on. And Woody is going to have to be
impressed on the fact that he would be a hero
to the Yah. Lay it on, because that's the only
(40:38):
thing that's really going to make him want to do
something about it. He's they I've said this before when
I sat down and talked to them and tried to
help them to get Matt to the fiftieth anniversary celebration.
Don't need your help. Got it all und your way.
You know we're gonna make it. We're gonna make it
(40:59):
easy for me to walk in through the front door.
And I said, that's the fact happen, not walking in
through the front door. You've got him. Go and go
to him, get him. He feels so uh, you know,
un well, what's what he feels like? He has not
(41:20):
been treated properly. And and Woody has to be told
wood he you're a great guy. We love you, and
you're the hero that the other owners over the years
have never been. You can make the grand gesture, and
you can decide what that grand gesture is and how
(41:41):
big it should be. Okay, and when Matt does commit
and come into the stadium, he's you know, you're going
to get all the credit. And by the way, that
brings up a second point. If you want to get
Joe involved, great, get him involved behind the scenes. Matt
does not want to walk on the field with Joa,
(42:04):
not because he doesn't like Joe Namath, but because his
attitude will be wait a minute, are we doing this
all again? Who is being honored here? Right? Me and him? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (42:18):
Right? And I could understand now that I've heard from you,
Bob about it, and Indie called last week about it.
The more I think about it, I totally understand because
like if if Matt Snow finally gets this moment in
the sun and Joe Navids like, you're welcome, guy, Like
it was him that that decided just randomly, however, many
years later to give him the spotlight and everything that
(42:39):
he wanted, like the attention to the to right the wrong.
I mean that obviously exists here between Snelle Jets. Yeah,
I think that would hit a different way. And I
would say this to what you just said, Bob, that
like what he needs to be this champion in this
world for it to exist. I will tell you this.
I just recently heard a story from somebody that said
they hate and people who donate to charity have to
(43:02):
call out cameras another attention to it because they want
the pat on the back. And I say, sure, if
you want to hate that random person, I won't name
his name. If you want to say that, that's fine.
You know what it's good to me is the end
of the day, the result is good. So if someone
wants the credit for charity or just want the credit
for charity. Sure we can all whisper and go hm.
He probably should have just done it for the sake
(43:24):
of doing it, But at the end of the day
of the charity is happening. I don't give a crap
if you want all the cameras to not so to
transition that to this woody story. If what he wants
to be, I will build Woody a statue. I don't
give up. We can a handsome, filthy ridge. Why if
I will tell him whatever he wants to hear, as
long as it results in the thing that we're all okay.
Speaker 5 (43:44):
What he could be the master of ceremonies that day
works for me. Whatever he wants, or he could be
he could be that wizard of us behind the screene
that's there. But you don't have to show him.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
I'm sure he would want to be showed, but that's
you know. But again, it works for me as long
as we could get it to Matt's now, so hep
first off, For you and everyone else that's listening, the
Matt Snell story won't die if you guys don't let
it die. So if we keep talking about it, keep
doing it, it's going to help. And then one more
nugget because Bob said it about the letter nice try
(44:21):
to the people, so Scottie and Foxy and a few
others that will working.
Speaker 5 (44:24):
Credit to them for spending the time to put that together.
Speaker 1 (44:27):
Yes, but what I would say is this, I will
put you guys in touch with Bob and let's all
be on the same page. We're all on the same team.
I want the letter to be accurate. I want the
letter to Bob's point. I love his influence one hundred exactly.
I don't want wasted time. And obviously great effort by
Scotty and Foxy they even put it together in the
first place. But if we want to be a team
and make sure it's tactful and everything is written out
(44:50):
appropriately and sent to the right people and go viral
on social media like that first one sort of did
like great, But let's just all be on the same
page and write it the way it should be. That's
what I'm excited about to see, because if we executed appropriately,
it's already created a little bit of buzz. People asking
whoa what's going on with this? Some not just some,
there's a lot of people that have no idea that
(45:10):
there's a beef between Mattson and the Jets, and every
day that we talk about it, every week that we
talk about on this show, more and more people joined
the cause. So that's very important.
Speaker 6 (45:19):
Bob.
Speaker 10 (45:20):
I did tell Jake asmand about I called the show
and I explained that what was his reaction He didn't know.
Speaker 5 (45:27):
He didn't know.
Speaker 10 (45:28):
I gave him the four one one on that and
he said, he goes, oh, I know, Bob, I try
to get him on the show, and I because something
came up with the it was something big news happened
at the time when you were supposed to come on.
Speaker 5 (45:39):
Je he you know, I give ja Jake. Jake actually
had me on his show when he was in Houston
for you. Oh wow, yes, because he's you know, I
didn't realize it because he was a Jet fan. I
just thought, well, oh, there's somebody who recognizes what this
book is about. But obviously he's a big Jets fan. Yeah,
of course, and so he, you know, he had me on.
I even have the tape of it, fifteen twenty minutes.
(46:01):
I appreciated it. I don't want to tell you what
to do. What's gonna work. Go back to him and say, hey,
have you given it any more thought Jake around back Jake.
Jake obviously has tremendous pull. And and you know, I
don't know the other guys at all who do the podcast,
although you listen to them, and some of them are
(46:23):
really good. And and again, I think Rich Eisen is
a guy who could really carry the torch. Not only
does he have his own show, but now he's doing
ESPN again correct, And I think he could be the
kind of guy that could turn the whole story into
a little feature.
Speaker 10 (46:43):
He does an interview with him, does an interview with
Woody Johnson and says, oh, by the way, would here a.
Speaker 5 (46:50):
Just just just a you know, a ninety second or
two minute little featurette that he could bring on about Hey,
here's something nobody really knows about. And you show remember
Matt Snell who did all this amazing stuff in Super
Bowl three and he and the Jets. You know, do
you know that Matt Snell hasn't talked to the Jets
in sixty years? Let's bring them back and it's been onearthed. Listen.
(47:15):
I went out and tried to get people to read
my book in twenty eighteen under the premise that you
want to find out why Matt is upset at the Jets.
It's right here, it's right here in this book, and
that didn't really light a fire. And again it goes
I think to a lot of present day fans don't
(47:35):
give a hoot about what happened. I mean, they love
the fact that the Jets did win a Super Bowl
way back when before they were hatched. But you know,
it's like yesterday's news. And again I've said this before,
and in Green Bay they don't really care who the
hell Vince Lombardi was. That's crazy.
Speaker 10 (47:53):
This the running backs, Matt Snell's there, and the running
back room walks out to the middle of the field
with them, and they also sit there and the place
just goes eight shit.
Speaker 5 (48:02):
For him, you know. Yeah, Well that's what I told
him when I again when I had dinner with him.
As dinner broke up, I said, Matt, I'd like you
to have that day where seventy eight thousand people stand
up and give you the ovation that you deserve for
what you did that day in addition to your just
your career, because it would be a fitting tribute to
(48:24):
you when you deserve it. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (48:26):
Thanks Pellas and real quick cap I'll just say this
that Rich Eisen has a national show that's live three
hours a day. It's twelve to three pm Eastern Time,
and he has phone lines that are open. I've called
this show multiple times, so people, if one of you
is articulate enough about this Matt Snell situation. I'm sort
of running around with a lot of the things I've
got going on, so I haven't been able to call
(48:46):
in recently. But his phone lines are open, and if
you explain, try to encapsulate it, because you'll probably only
have a few minutes to talk to him. But if
you can encapsulate this Matt Snell story and it piques
his interest, that's all it's going to take.
Speaker 6 (48:58):
I gain.
Speaker 1 (48:58):
He's on three hours a day, live Monday through Friday,
and in about two or three weeks he transitions over
to ESPN Radio, where his impact will be even greater
than it's ever been.
Speaker 5 (49:09):
And he wears his Jet fandom not on his sleeve,
it's on his forehead. Talks about it. He talks about it.
I mean, if they cut a player that he likes,
he talks about Yeah.
Speaker 10 (49:19):
Yeah, him and Green he would probably sit together in
the stadium.
Speaker 1 (49:24):
Which would be great, Thank you so much, brother.
Speaker 5 (49:27):
Good one weekend.
Speaker 1 (49:28):
Yeah, yeah, there we go. Excellent, guys, keep the phone
calls coming. We have a two hundred and fifty people
in the room. It's a Friday, which means Philly Noodle's time.
What's up Philly going on?
Speaker 5 (49:37):
Are you guys doing Philly?
Speaker 1 (49:39):
And also a couple of what do you expect tonight? Yeah?
What do you expect?
Speaker 3 (49:46):
I'd really like to see the first off, I've been
saying that Gibson is the only wide receiver. I let's survive.
Let's skinner, let preach it, hit the hit the practice squad.
Its Skinner's been showing up practices. But you know I
would just get him on the practice squad to stop
playing games. Let's get a concrete answer to who we need.
(50:07):
I would like to see what's gonna happen with mccorley,
h Malifi Corley.
Speaker 5 (50:12):
Could they trade him? Could they dangle him?
Speaker 3 (50:14):
Maybe get a sixth for him, you know, compensate back
at six or something somebody.
Speaker 5 (50:19):
You don't think he's shown enough to be one of
the extra.
Speaker 3 (50:22):
Dv's Bob, See that was a great joke. And I
don't know if this is you or your your brother Philip,
who were talking.
Speaker 5 (50:35):
That's a good point.
Speaker 1 (50:36):
So well, well I'll just tell you this, Philip. I
was listening to Zack Rosse Black yesterday on their flight
Plan podcast and he said, I don't think there's anything
that Maliki Corley could do in this game, like anything
that will save him basically, so like his story is written,
he believes. So with cut down down Tuesday, I'm getting creative.
(50:56):
I do player for player swaps. Is there someone else
on your team?
Speaker 4 (50:59):
And keep?
Speaker 6 (51:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (51:00):
You know what that's that's not That's not an unlikely
situation because to admit that you completely whiffed on that
draft pick, it's a real bad thing.
Speaker 3 (51:11):
I'm admitting it. I I liked him, I whiffed. Yeah,
Me and Joe Douglas like him. Whift Uh the rash cord,
that's all. It's about. Rasscore, baby. If you're athletic enough,
it no matter. A couple of things here. First off,
Todd Clifton is the codliston this is he is?
Speaker 5 (51:32):
You know what I mean? Maybe that's a.
Speaker 3 (51:34):
Better looking but look, so I ordered his cards and
I had this in mind that to call every show here.
Speaker 1 (51:40):
Let me give you a full screen right one more
time there.
Speaker 5 (51:42):
So I have this idea.
Speaker 3 (51:43):
I had rant an idea on the Asthma Show that
everybody thought it was a little whild I was burning
things in lieu of trying to hope we can get wins.
You know, call whatever he's like. But I was looking
for obtaining any cod clifting card that's gonna have an
opponent on the schedule that I would list that card
as like a showcase card for that week.
Speaker 1 (52:04):
Oh that's cool, I like that just came.
Speaker 5 (52:06):
From it an eBay. Is that not Kyle? Now?
Speaker 1 (52:09):
Oh? That's is he?
Speaker 8 (52:11):
Like?
Speaker 5 (52:12):
Is he just a hobby for me? You know what
I mean? Because he's at home.
Speaker 1 (52:16):
It's the Spider Man meme. Those are the same people.
Speaker 5 (52:19):
It's the same person person. I would and real quick
about the wide receiver move again.
Speaker 3 (52:25):
You know, I've been championing, championing, going to the Packers
and saying, let me get either Tavian Wicks or Dobbs
Doves would cost more. But he had that stretch of
four games where he wasn't playing and it was like
some mental situation.
Speaker 5 (52:39):
To me, it felt like he was mad at the Packers.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
And now you can be even more mad maybe because look,
at the situation brought to matt Golden.
Speaker 5 (52:46):
Look what happened with the last guy we took? Who
he's mad at the Packers?
Speaker 1 (52:50):
Well, yeah, that's true. But to your point, Philly, and
isn't this great?
Speaker 5 (52:54):
Right?
Speaker 1 (52:54):
Like normally you go to a team and say, damn it, Lions,
I want Jamison Williams. I don't know, we're we go
to the Packers to say any of them this guy,
this guy, this guy, or maybe even this guy. Like
they've got four or five guys all in that realm,
anyone basically not named Matthew Goldoko is obviously without trading
him it was the first round pick, but Edione else maybe.
Speaker 3 (53:17):
I mean Jaden Reid would be a gadget player. I
don't think they're letting him go. I think the problem
is this, they realize how fragile most of these all
these players are nowadays in football. So they're like, all right, well,
if we stop like Wicks, if we don't get rid
of him. When Christian Watson inevitably tweaks an ankle boom,
we got don Tavian Wicks. And they're about the common
bole not the same height, but the build is kind
(53:39):
of similar. So I think that's why they've kept them
as long as they have. But I'd like to see
something happen. Like we've said that. Everybody said, no, yeah,
mclaurin's not happened. That's sick. We're not giving up no
draft capital. That's absolutely insane. Yeah, and Bob, to your
credit one thousand percent, they have to keep some money
in the in the bank for next year. They're not
getting rid of a one or two. That's not happening.
Speaker 5 (54:01):
No, they have They're going to obviously have needs that
they need to fill. And you know, like it was
one of the things people speculated yesterday they may need
to get that defensive tackle next year, you know.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
Yeah, yeah, actually it's not about it. Well, Harrison's on
for one more year, naughties just the one year. Yeah,
you really had Williams again, and then just whoever's left over. Yeah,
a lot of a lot of the contracts were one
year contracts. Reynolds, Cisco. I wish they would have signed
Justin Simmons. That's just me, right, I don't think so.
(54:35):
I think me see, I think you do you think?
Speaker 5 (54:38):
Do you think they're there? You got enough depth at linebacker?
Speaker 3 (54:42):
I know I've been saying that for three years straight
they should have drafted Peyton Wilson. Wilson last year from
UH North Carolina State, he had like the craziest like
college season last year. They should have picked him up.
I was championing that. I've been championing them grabbing into
the line backer for years.
Speaker 1 (55:01):
Yeah. By the way, Justin Simmons is still a free agent.
No one has signed Justin Simmons yet.
Speaker 5 (55:05):
I would have picked I don't know what's going on.
Speaker 3 (55:07):
Maybe it's a red flag with UH his medicals, but
maybe I would have picked up Justin.
Speaker 5 (55:12):
I would have picked them up already. I just think
you just you have to you have to have depth
at every position. Yeah. Season is too long, you know,
you can't expect you can't expect your best, most athletic
and youngest player to still make it through seventeen games. Yeah,
and then like you were the linebacker.
Speaker 3 (55:30):
Yeah, I mean we've been playing with linebacker problems for
a while since what Bart Scott and I mean, Yeah,
we've whiffed on a lot of ones.
Speaker 5 (55:38):
Out out of uh, you know, out of the draft.
Speaker 3 (55:41):
But the past few years linebackers have gone subtly underneath
in the middle of the draft second rounds, and I
thought we were going to scoop somebody up last year.
Speaker 5 (55:51):
We didn't.
Speaker 3 (55:52):
It is what it is, especially with Salah knowing the
linebacker room. That's why he flipped Sherwood right from safety
to linebacker, which was it panned out years later. You know,
if you want an immediate effect, you just got to
spend a little bit, you know, I mean look at them,
or you can be late the Eagles and get a
Zach Bam dropped from another team.
Speaker 5 (56:11):
You know, that's that's all Mels.
Speaker 3 (56:13):
I don't know how you do that, but yeah, hopefully
we figure it out and to you guys, a good day.
Speaker 5 (56:19):
I appreciate a good weekend.
Speaker 1 (56:21):
There is Philly Noodles joining us here on the show.
We got a lot of callers. We'll get to all
of you guys here on the show. It's a game
day episode again, Jets Eagles. That's about uh eleven eight
showers away from kickoff. We're about eleven hours away. We'll
keep you guys posure.
Speaker 5 (56:36):
Exactly what the seven Eastern the game starts tonight.
Speaker 1 (56:39):
I believe seven thirty I believe is what I have
here on my Bingo cards. So yeah, seven thirty kickoff
tonight Eastern time, Eastern time. So there you go. Uh
and why jetsfl you're on the show?
Speaker 5 (56:49):
What's up?
Speaker 1 (56:50):
Ted? You're on? Yeah, you're on some level of mute,
not on our side, but on your side somewhere. Yeah, okay,
stumbing the screen. Yeah, there we go, gotcha.
Speaker 5 (57:07):
I was on Bluetooth.
Speaker 7 (57:08):
Good morning, gentlemen, great conversation.
Speaker 5 (57:09):
Actually, thank you.
Speaker 7 (57:12):
You know, there's too little, too much hate I think
for Justin Fields, I wouldn't say, well, maybe not quite hate,
but like this disdain about the fact that we're trying him.
Speaker 6 (57:24):
Out as a quarterback.
Speaker 7 (57:27):
I and and you know Jackson Dark can we stop
with that already? I mean, let's just I mean, Brady
looks good against third stringers, but please, you know about
the overall philosophy of the team. When that reporter asked
Aaron Glenn about it's a passing league, it just it
(57:48):
just kind of opened things up for me even more
because I went and looked up Jalen Hurts his stats.
I'm not going to compare. I'm not going to direct
compare the two, but the and the Eagles have a
lot more talent than we do, probably on both sides.
You know, Jalen Hurts twenty nine hundred yards, eighteen touchdowns,
passing five picks. Of course, Saquon had his three hundred
(58:11):
and fifty carries and two thousand yards. But the key
to the key to the Jets season is time of possession.
I mean, I you know, I don't care who runs
the ball. You can give it to any of these guys.
You can short past the death out of teams. You know,
you can hide your deficiencies on both offense and defense.
You keep that clock running, and your special teams can
(58:35):
keep you in the game.
Speaker 4 (58:35):
You know, we hadn't how.
Speaker 7 (58:37):
Many turnovers did we have out last year?
Speaker 4 (58:39):
I bet you we were down at the bottom. You know,
I didn't even look that up.
Speaker 7 (58:44):
I mean, obviously there were hardly any interceptions quite you know.
Speaker 1 (58:49):
Oh you're talking about creating you're talking about creating takeaways
or giving.
Speaker 7 (58:53):
Yeah, I'm sorry, Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I mean. Yeah,
I mean, we couldn't turn the ball, turn any team over.
It's just I think the combination of all those is
going to make us very competitive.
Speaker 8 (59:06):
I really do.
Speaker 5 (59:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (59:08):
Let's see, the Jets had seventeen takeaways last season. That
was ranked thirty two, thirty one, thirty, twenty nine, twenty eight.
There was twenty seventh in the league in takeaway, so awful.
They were not good in that department.
Speaker 5 (59:25):
I don't think you can argue against what Aaron Glenn
said about it not being a passing league, just based
on what Philly was able to accomplish last year with
a lowly ranked passing game, although to compare their quarterback
and the situation with Justin Fields doesn't get Philly enough credit.
(59:47):
But I sent an article to Paul earlier this week,
and I threatened that if he didn't bring it up,
then I was going to bring it up. And it
talks about Michael Nannier wrote.
Speaker 1 (59:59):
It, Yeah, and I love that Yeah, And.
Speaker 5 (01:00:02):
It talks about Over the past four seasons, nine teams
have finished top ten in rushing and bottom sixteen in passing.
Here are those teams, along with their finish overall.
Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
Okay, you know twenty.
Speaker 5 (01:00:16):
Four Colts tenth run, twenty second, pass twentieth overall. Let
me go to the ones that were up near, up
near the top in running twenty two. Packers fourth in
running attack, eighteenth in passing attack. Their offense was twelfth
overall you know, in the end, it comes down to
(01:00:37):
more than just you know what you can do with
running and passing. And to me, it's again, it's that defense.
The best example to me was the Baltimore Ravens when
they won the Super Bowl. Their offense, although their offense
really was just running the ball and telling a quarterback
not to make a mistake.
Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
Which version are you talking about two thousand or the
Joe Flacco.
Speaker 5 (01:01:01):
We're talking about two thousand? Okay, okay, Because because they
were their defense was overwhelming, I mean other than the
other than the eighty five Bears, who I being in
Chicago at the time, I was just amazed at how
good they were defensively. That's that Baltimore defense was the
best overwhelming defense I've ever seen. And yet if you
(01:01:24):
have the defense, who can not only stop the other team,
but as you just brought up, force turnovers. And I
think that's part of Glenn's you know plan as well,
that that he really wants these guys to to get
them to help turn the ball over, to give the
offense more chances and to put the Jets in good
(01:01:45):
field position. Again, that reminded me, based on this book
that I wrote, the sixty eight. I think it's called
beyond something or other. But anyway, that season, when Namath
got them in trouble by throwing interception after interception, they
kind of put him in a cocoon for about five
(01:02:06):
games and said, Joe, just manage the offense. We'll take
it from there. And Snell and Boozer and Mathis went
to town and Billy Joe did too, and they won
four or five games in a row straight offensive, you know,
running attack, and Jim Turner went nuts with field goals,
and they would win games by nine points instead of
(01:02:27):
what Joe wanted, which was by nineteen points. But the
fact of the matter was the defense was so good
and it wasn't again nothing like that. There's nothing like
the Ravens, but they were really good and they would
never win rank defense in the league that last year.
In fact, I was surprised when I read that our
defense last year ended up third. Yeah, the AFC. That
(01:02:50):
surprised me. So imagine if we have a defense that
can pretty much corral the run so that you can't
just you know, run down the field against us, You
have to really work to get down the field. Our
corners look good, our safeties look better than they have been.
I like our starting linebackers, and now we have a
defensive line that is more complete, you know, with really
(01:03:12):
good rushing attacks you know, from the outside and even
with Quinn Williams on the inside, and a little bit
more sturdiness against the run. So, as I said at
the very start today, give the offense more chances, and
then the offense if they keep running the ball, you know,
you're not going to be susceptible to turning the ball
(01:03:34):
over that way. So we'll see. It's one more point.
It's it's funny when you mentioned.
Speaker 7 (01:03:39):
A cocoon, I just immediately went to Josh Allen and
when they hired Joe Brady, when when Josh Allen was reckless,
you know and turning the ball over that crazy, they
brought in somebody to harness him, you know, cocoon him.
So you know, sometimes over aggression can can be a negative.
And having that much talent and think you can be
(01:04:00):
you know that you're a great player, but one player
always doesn't win the game at certain points that you
have to you know, like Mahomes or any of these
great quarterbacks. So anyway, great conversation, I know, you have
a lot of Carls.
Speaker 5 (01:04:13):
Paul, Hey, how hot's the weather day? I assume you
are in Florida.
Speaker 7 (01:04:18):
I'm near Tampa. It's ninety six every day. It's it's
pretty rough this time of year.
Speaker 5 (01:04:24):
It's umid down there too. I know Miami and such
is unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (01:04:28):
As soon as you go outside, there's nats in your
face that it can get any more humid than that.
But you know what, in the middle of October is
when it really is beautiful.
Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
Okay, you hold out all year for that. Well, hopefully
it's pretty good.
Speaker 6 (01:04:42):
Thanks.
Speaker 7 (01:04:42):
How it is, It's like it's like our summer is
your winner. That's kind of how it is.
Speaker 5 (01:04:46):
Yeah, and yours and your winner is our summer exactly exactly.
Speaker 6 (01:04:52):
But I'll never give up my fandom. So you all
have a nice day.
Speaker 5 (01:04:55):
Great talking to you. You do it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:57):
Thank you so much. Ted. Now I also say, Ted
brought it up. I love that AG is just so
well read. Right. So a guy goes, obviously the media
report this happened earlier this week. Obviously, it's a passing league,
and AG cuts him off, goes, what do you mean
it's a passing league? Me, reporter goes. Isn't it a
passing league? And he's like, hey, well, in the Super
Bowl last year, PHOTOLPHI Eagles number one of the run,
(01:05:18):
twenty ninth in the past. He's just ready with stats,
he's well read, he's just just you know.
Speaker 5 (01:05:23):
Well, he's also he's also playing it smart defensively. Why
against the attacks that you guys are not ready?
Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
Yeah? Well, which which is pretty good, pretty good stuff.
All right, let's go back to the phone lines. We've
got Scotty Mayhem on the show. Scotty Oh oh okay,
we'll go back to Scotty. All right, let's go next.
Man with a jet tattoo, Oh nice new hat? Were okay, Bob,
how you doing?
Speaker 5 (01:05:51):
I'm good? How are you doing? By the way, what's
your real name?
Speaker 8 (01:05:57):
I gotta call you know.
Speaker 5 (01:05:59):
You're gonna have to come a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:06:01):
Your phone maybe leaning on something. We're losing your audio
a little bit. Go ahead, no, no muffled. Yeah, I
don't know what's going on there, still garbled. I don't
know what's going on here. Here's what we'll do. Man
with the jet tattoo, try to I'll kick you out
of here real quick, and we'll see if you can
(01:06:21):
circle back out and try to fix it. You sound muffled,
uh for some reason. Let's see. We'll give Scotty a chance. Scottie, No, Scottie,
all right? Well, hell do you a couple of phone
issues happening here on the program. That's all right, appreciate
you guys chiming in. We have a couple other comments
(01:06:42):
to highlight as well. Again, we got nearly three hundred
people in the room. Like the video. Hit subscribe. We
got a game day episode here on the channel. We
had this question earlier, Bob from Troy Sturger. Just thank
you for the question. Remember the Boy Green Coffee Club.
Beg and Bob, what kind of offense would you like
to see? Tanna rangstrand run, Ben Johnson, Todd Monkin. I'm
hoping for a mixture of plus BGNY insights on how
you're feeling about fantasy football. We'll get to that part later.
(01:07:04):
What we expect. Let's just sort of generalize it here.
I mean, you can be specific if you have a
preference to the Den Johnsons or Todd Monkins of the world.
Todd Monkin, the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Ben
Johnson formerly of the Lions now with the Chicago Bears.
But what kind of offense are we expecting because obviously
the things we've seen in the preseason is who gayzy,
It's not the real thing we're gonna see once we
(01:07:25):
get Week one to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 5 (01:07:27):
Hey Paul describe for me as a Todd Munkin offense.
I mean, and when you say Baltimore Ravens, if it's
the kind of team they have now, well, then the
first thing you do is you compare the quarterback with
our quarterback and all they both can run like crazy,
there's a difference in you know, throwing capability. So what
exactly does he mean by Todd Munkin.
Speaker 1 (01:07:49):
It's a good question. So Todd Monkin is a guy
that the Jets considered for head coach back in twenty nineteen.
He's an offensive master minders been coaching football for forty years.
He was a two time national champion. He was the
head man at Georgia for a couple of years as
the offensive coordinator, won a couple of national championships down there.
Most recently he's been in the NFL. He he joined
(01:08:11):
back up or returned to the NFL excuse me two
years ago joining the Baltimore Ravens, and there's been some
MVPs on the trophy case of one Lamar Jackson. It's
just been creative play calling, innovative play calling, obviously a
dedication to the run game. But it hasn't been like
a nineteen forties wing t offense like. There's just been
a lot of movement. There's been a lot of explosive plays.
(01:08:32):
There's been a lot of like getting Lamar Jackson on
the move and doing creative things from that perspective, So
it's sort of a again, a Tanner Ringstrain offense. We
don't know what that looks like. Ben Johnson obviously has
a lot of creative play calling too, but yeah, Monkin
has had a lot of explosiveness, which I think is
excited a lot of Ravens fans certainly and I'm sure
(01:08:52):
Jeff fans.
Speaker 5 (01:08:53):
Do we have any idea what kind of offense inks
from rand the one year he was in oc in college.
Speaker 1 (01:09:01):
I do not. At San Diego State where he was
with Harbaugh. Also, he was a co offensive coordinator in
the now defunct XFL which is now the UFL. He
was there as well and he co called plays. I
don't know how that works. Do they trade plays on
a play?
Speaker 7 (01:09:16):
You know?
Speaker 5 (01:09:17):
I don't. I think Engstrom is probably going to follow
the Ben Johnson. Let's keep it, let's keep it simple
at the beginning. Yeah, I don't think you want to
get these the young running backs, the second year running
backs having to make all kinds of fancy maneuvers. I
don't see you know a lot of you know, fake
fakes and that sort of thing. To me, it looks like,
(01:09:39):
really I'm meat and potatoes type offense. And again, until
it gets stopped. Uh, They're probably gonna stick with it,
although you know there'll be some slight, you know, slights
of hand just to keep the defense honest. But really
hard to say. But you know, all in all, I
would think Engstrom is going to know what he has
(01:10:00):
been best exposed to, and that worked, you know, in Detroit.
It's kind of interesting. There was an article here yesterday
about Caleb Williams and how he has really adapted under
Johnson to be much better at taking the ball under
center instead of you know, taking taking the long snap,
(01:10:22):
and it pointed out the fact that when you call
it from under under center, it gives you more more
opportunities to deceive the defense, particularly you know when when
you want to, you know, fake the handoff and throw
the ball. But I think you know, you'll probably see
a couple of little slights of hand in the first game.
Just again to keep my offense the defense honest. But Paul,
(01:10:46):
do you disagree with me? At some point defenses are
going to stack the box and say, go ahead, try
to run and try to beat us with a pass.
Speaker 1 (01:10:55):
Week one will be fascinating because the Steelers in theory
should know him as much about Justin Fields as anybody.
He was their starter for six weeks, so offensive game
planning building around his strengths, hiding his weaknesses, and then
just quite frankly that they had him in the building.
So they I imagine they're going to dare the Jets
to beat them with the pass. They're gonna put twelve
(01:11:15):
guys in the box and you can only have eleven
guys in the field, and they're still gonna put twelve
guys in the box and say Justin Field's beat us.
We dare you, We triple dog dare you. And to me,
if I'm the Jets on the first player of the game,
Arion Smith is running and out and up and stop
and go, and I'm gonna pump fake and then let
it rip and I'm just going to chuck it down
(01:11:35):
the field. And it's one of three things gonna happen.
Either a deep shot for a touchdown and boo. Yeah,
there you go. Set the tone. Just in general, it's
gonna back off the defense like whoa, okay, all right,
he's They're willing to take deep shots that we had
not seen throughout the preseason. Here we go, or a
penalty is drawn, like good things are gonna happen from
taking those kind of shots and being aggressive. So that's
(01:11:57):
what I see happening. But I think you're right. Every team,
even in the NFL, quite Franklin, we're being candid about
Justin Fields and his struggle so far throughout his career.
They are going to force him to beat them with
the pass, and when he starts beating him with the past,
now all of a sudden, we've got something cooking here.
I think that's going to be the question. I think
we have man with the jet tattoo back, so let's
give it another whirl with jet tattoo. Can you hear
(01:12:18):
me now, yes, much clearer. I don't know what happened,
but yes.
Speaker 8 (01:12:21):
I know what happened. I had my earbudt in and
I forgot about it, okay, and it did something with
the micro You.
Speaker 5 (01:12:26):
Look much better without your earbuds too, thank.
Speaker 8 (01:12:29):
You, Ny. Anyway, Uh, you know there is so much
hate going on. I wonder why these people even watch
the Jets. Why do you even listen to content if
you already made your decision? I mean, you know, I
listened to some other podcasts locked on. I don't want
(01:12:53):
to tell you the rest of it, but and some
of it I have to turn it off. I can't
read it anymore. I'm like, why are you even wasting
your time if you hate the Jets that much? Or
if you don't think the Jets you think the Jets
are going to suck again? I mean, it's like, oh,
(01:13:13):
I just can't believe it. I just can't believe it.
Speaker 5 (01:13:15):
But a lot of fans have been conditioned, Yeah, but
to expect the worst.
Speaker 1 (01:13:22):
I know me, I said it every year. I don't know.
Maybe again, the older you get, the more you get
beaten down. I have no idea, but for me, every year,
no matter what happened the previous year. We've my first
season of doing this YouTube show, which I celebrate a
five year anniversary coming up in two weeks. We had
a two and fourteen year. I did a pre and
(01:13:43):
postgame show every day for a two and fourteen team,
for the love of God, and somehow five years later,
up still here. How is that even possible? And I
reset The next year, I'm like, you know what, we
won the Zymbowl this year. We can figure it out,
we can make it happen. So I convince myself every
year that we can do this. And to me, the
off season is the perfect time for hopium Why not
(01:14:04):
nothing's happened yet, we're all oh and all, why can't
we dream the impossible dream if we get into the
middle of the seas where two and ten, Okay, I
might have to adjust expectation slightly, But right now, hope
is high. Hope is eternal, baby.
Speaker 5 (01:14:18):
You know, no matter what what team you root for
in whatever league that you watch, And I'll watch the
Mets and the Jets and the Knicks and the Rangers.
Speaker 1 (01:14:27):
I'm sorry, the.
Speaker 5 (01:14:28):
Off season is always the time for hope. Yes, who
are they going to bring in that's going to be
better than who they had last year, and how much
better can they be?
Speaker 1 (01:14:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:14:39):
And you know, with the Jets, I think this is
a particularly interesting year because they didn't go crazy in
the off season. They didn't spend a ton of money
on free agents. In fact, we spent almost nothing except
for the cornerback. And but you have the new regime,
(01:14:59):
you know, have Aaron Glenn in mousie, and you're hoping
that they know what they're doing. And so far, at
least from a public perspective, Uh, they seem to really
have their you know what together. Uh. And Okay, I'll
see you later, dear, my better half, and uh, she
(01:15:21):
just corrected me way better half. I guess she co
wrote the book. I don't know. But anyway, Yeah, but anyway,
you know, you have to have some hope just based
on Glenn, I mean, and that's what I'm that's what
I'm hanging my my hopes on. And that that the
(01:15:42):
regime and the way he's running camp and the way
he's holding people to account, uh and doing everything he
can to coach up these guys. Apparently there's a tremendous
amount of time that he personally is spending going around
positioned by position, because, as he said yesterday, this is
(01:16:04):
a game of vicious, hard hitting tackling, and he said
nothing has changed in the way successful teams become successful.
You start from the basics and you build up on that,
and you have accountability, and you have guys who are
hungry and want to win. And I think there's a
lot of guys on this team who fit that profile.
(01:16:26):
Plus they signed their two best players, which really sent
a message to the rest of the team, Hey, if
you produce, we're going to pay you, and we're going
to try to we want to keep you here. So
I think they have the ingredients. It's just now a
matter of putting it together and the experience level and
minimizing mistakes. This is again I think that the closest
(01:16:51):
thing you can compare this to is the Ravens where
they told the quarterback, don't make a mistake. That's all
you're here to do is hand the ball off and
make simple short passes. Don't make a mistake, and they
put him. The defense did put the offense in great
position game after game to get some you know, easytds
(01:17:12):
and a lot of field goals.
Speaker 8 (01:17:14):
Anyway, good point, Bob. I think that it's not older
guys that are, you know, putting out all this negativity.
I think it's a lot of younger people really because
you yeah, because they they don't have any patients. They
want everything now. They want instant, instant win, instant win.
(01:17:36):
Why can't I have it? Why can't my team win
a Super Bowl? But you know what, when you've been
watching a foot a team, regardless of what it is,
for as long as we have. I mean, I've gone
through seasons where I've been so pissed off. I've ripped
things off the wall, I've thrown things out the window.
Oh oh, I mean really, I've packed up everything on
(01:17:58):
my wall and put him in boxes because I couldn't
look at it anymore. And then you know what, when
preseason came the next year, when training cam opened up,
everything went right back where it was because because nothing's guaranteed.
There's thirty two teams, right, thirty two teams. You know,
(01:18:18):
everybody is not going to be in the Super Bowl.
All we want, all we want is competitive football, something
we can enjoy every week. Yeah, you know that's what
we want. That's what I want.
Speaker 5 (01:18:31):
Anyway, Well, there is nothing worse to me as a
sports fan. Then the bubble blowing itself out after every loss,
right because you say, I gotta wait seven days, you know,
to hopefully get back on the winning side. You know,
as a baseball fan, when you lose the opening day,
(01:18:52):
you kind of get deflated. But you know tomorrow we
can play. And if you just get that first win tomorrow, okay,
everything is okay. But football you got seven days between
games most of the time.
Speaker 8 (01:19:04):
But people, look what happened last week. People are what
happened last week with a preseason game? The season's over.
Justin Field sucks. I mean, my god, Justin Fields. I
hope he's not reading this shit or listening to it.
And another one like you got a guy like Alan Alan,
whatever the hell his name is? A guy like that?
(01:19:26):
Why do you come on here, Alan? I like to
smack you in the head. I really would. I would
like to smack a guy like that, because if that's
the way you think, why do you come on here
just to antagonize people to get to get a rise
out of him? Yeah, you want to get a rise
out of me, Alan, Come to my house, tell me
that shit, and I'll smack you in the head and
(01:19:47):
say get out of here. I'm watching the Jets. I'm
going to enjoy the Jets. If you don't like it,
I'll smack you in the head again.
Speaker 5 (01:19:55):
Do you feel the same way I do after they
lose a game that, Oh god, you know, the depth
the depth of despair, you know, because we could have won.
Speaker 8 (01:20:05):
And I also feel, you know, I'll never forget when
I used to go when I lived in Florida, we
used to have a Jet bar and we go to
this bar and we'd have a small well, we'd have
a group of Jet fans and we'd be watching the
game and there'd be I'll never forget the fake spike
game with Dan Marino. Oh god, I was in a
(01:20:27):
bar and we're watching that game and that that spike happened,
and I think Aaron Glenn was involved in that fake spike,
And when it felt like somebody stabbed me in the heart,
and all his Dolphins fans are standing around laughing at you,
and it's like, what are you gonna do? You know,
(01:20:51):
I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning.
Speaker 1 (01:20:54):
You know, my humble equivalent in different eras, obviously, and
we're a division. Ride is laughing at us and making joke. Yeah,
oh god.
Speaker 8 (01:21:04):
But but the point is that you know, the next.
Speaker 1 (01:21:07):
There you go, here's this real quick mantoo erin Glenn
was the dB on the play. According to him, he was.
Speaker 8 (01:21:13):
That's true. Yeah, I thought it was.
Speaker 1 (01:21:15):
I thought it was brutal.
Speaker 8 (01:21:17):
So so the point is, you know, tonight's preseason game
is going to be nothing, but I'll bet you tomorrow
there's gonna be content out there, Like I don't know
if Justin Field. Do you think he's gonna play it
serious tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:21:30):
Or I would say not? Says no. I mean we're
we'll find out obviously here shortly with someone now, so.
Speaker 8 (01:21:38):
Then we're gonna So then tomorrow I was gonna attack
Adrian Martinez probably, and then they're gonna attack Brady Cook.
Speaker 1 (01:21:45):
That's very possible.
Speaker 5 (01:21:45):
The only guy that I'm interested in watching tonight is Edwards.
Speaker 1 (01:21:49):
Oh yeah, Edwards who. By the way, if Isaia Davis
has heard as he's been, he's happened he's been out
a couple of weeks, there might be a path to
the old Don making the roster.
Speaker 8 (01:21:58):
Who's the other receiver? Uh? Not Smith, the real tall guy.
I can't think. I think that guy is a keeper.
Speaker 1 (01:22:09):
I'm curious the game. Where does he fit. Who does
he end up being?
Speaker 8 (01:22:13):
I know, but yeah, I think he's I think he's
a keeper.
Speaker 1 (01:22:17):
I think you know who.
Speaker 5 (01:22:18):
I think you know what I think they need as
the second receiver. I'm not concerned about some speed guy.
I'm concerned about a guy who really can run routes
and and get free, you know, of the second in
the secondary. Because Fields is the kind of guy who
only is effect of throwing the ball when the guy's
(01:22:39):
wide open. He's not that effective from what I've ever
seen in hitting a man on the run. But when
the guy's wide open, that's when he really feels confident
of letting the ball go. If it's any tight coverage
at all, and you know how small the window is
in the NFL either, you know, it doesn't make it
(01:23:00):
very accurate thrower. He doesn't make it throw at all.
You're going to get another receiver or if they're going
to spot somebody on the other side, let it be
you know, you know, going back to the old days, Belle.
Speaker 8 (01:23:13):
I think we got a guy. I think we got
a guy beck.
Speaker 5 (01:23:17):
Well, let's tight end and he's going to use tight
ends a lot because he always has.
Speaker 8 (01:23:21):
Yeah, this dry looks.
Speaker 1 (01:23:22):
This guy looks really good, full back, tight end, a
little bit of really good.
Speaker 8 (01:23:27):
I would take him over rucert any day.
Speaker 5 (01:23:31):
Gone after that.
Speaker 8 (01:23:32):
I think so too. I think he needs to be
gone anyway. Listen, I don't want to take any more time. Bob,
it was nice talking to you. Boy Green, have a
good weekend.
Speaker 5 (01:23:40):
And do you run? Okay, what's your real first name?
Speaker 8 (01:23:45):
Carl?
Speaker 5 (01:23:46):
Carl, Carl, have a great weekend.
Speaker 8 (01:23:48):
You too, Bob, boy Green, you have a good weekend too.
Speaker 1 (01:23:52):
Amen, Thank you, Carl, aka man with the Jett baby
love it.
Speaker 5 (01:24:03):
Let's go. I did that in front of my wife,
and she said, what the heck are you doing?
Speaker 1 (01:24:08):
Okay, that's all right there, we'll we'll get your wife
on board.
Speaker 5 (01:24:11):
What we'll get we'll get her involved. It's only been
thirty nine years, so.
Speaker 1 (01:24:14):
I mean, there you go. That means she's due.
Speaker 5 (01:24:18):
She is in any year now.
Speaker 1 (01:24:21):
I feel it.
Speaker 5 (01:24:22):
You know. If magine speaking of Kyle, imagine if they
would start to win, she would look at me and say,
you're smiling. It's Sunday afternoon, you're smiling. What's going on?
Speaker 1 (01:24:33):
Jet's wins. That's what's going on? Look at it.
Speaker 5 (01:24:36):
I want the truth now, are you you are not?
Speaker 11 (01:24:41):
I am not the I A.
Speaker 5 (01:24:46):
No, no, no, no, you're.
Speaker 1 (01:24:50):
Hour Kyle, And that's not for that day. That's our
Kyle Clifton Man.
Speaker 5 (01:24:55):
That's right.
Speaker 11 (01:24:57):
We are going to find out a lot about this
in the next two or three days. We haven't shown
anything in the preseason. Been a lot of vanilla.
Speaker 1 (01:25:06):
Yep.
Speaker 11 (01:25:07):
If they're carrying, you know, four running backs, if they're
carrying five wide receivers and they're carrying four tight ends,
expect you know, twelve the time. I desperately want them
to scour the wave wars and look to supplant Jeremy Ruckett.
I've had enough.
Speaker 1 (01:25:28):
They need to because But but Kyle, I think we
may have talked about this the other day. You don't
believe that there is someone right now on the roster
it's taking his job. It has to come outside, correct.
Speaker 5 (01:25:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:25:39):
Yeah, And that's what I agree with. Like, I don't
think Jeremy records very good. But I look at the
rest of Rush, I'm like, who's taking his job? Okay
Beck's making it, Mason Taylor's making obviously, then who else?
Zach Coones Neil Johnson.
Speaker 5 (01:25:50):
L though, if they're going to get on new tight end,
it's going to be a guy who can really block,
because that's so yeah, right.
Speaker 11 (01:25:57):
And I don't mind giving Coones another scholarship beer on
the practice squad, I don't care, right, fine, right, but
I think he might be on there with a guy
like Quentin Skinner, who obviously he is going to probably
need a little bit more seasoning. He's got to put
on some he's got to put on some weight. He's
had some problems getting off the line. I mean, he
(01:26:19):
could be a future X for us, right.
Speaker 1 (01:26:20):
He could be. He's like a buck ninety right now.
He needs to get a lot more weight, a lot
more weight.
Speaker 12 (01:26:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:26:25):
I mean if you can get up to like the
two ten to twelve range, then you then you're maybe
you're cooking with gas. Because if he can maintain a
speed at six six', five just got great, hands so
that that's something that you look. For, yeah BUT i
Think Brandon smith is making the.
Speaker 1 (01:26:40):
Team Oh, OKAY i like, It, Okay.
Speaker 11 (01:26:43):
YEAH i mean he's shown a. Lot glenn was effusive
with the praise the other. Day he's got good hands
and you guys that are, reliable you, know to catch
the ball because some of the other guys.
Speaker 1 (01:26:56):
Aren't and how many receivers you're making this, Team, kyle?
Speaker 11 (01:26:59):
SIX i originally THOUGHT i originally thought it would be,
five but With smith's showing, OUT i think it's going
to be.
Speaker 1 (01:27:05):
Six, okay who's your who's your?
Speaker 11 (01:27:07):
Six Richard, Smith Garret, Wilson Josh, Reynolds Tyler, johnson and
uh the SIXTH i?
Speaker 1 (01:27:17):
Had is It? Loard?
Speaker 3 (01:27:19):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:27:21):
OKAY i like it? Okay and THEN i was just
one of those. Guys.
Speaker 5 (01:27:25):
Okay do you see do you see anybody being imported
and during the waiver, Period, WELL.
Speaker 11 (01:27:31):
I think that they're so. SCARCE i think they're few
and far, between like you were, Saying, bob like IT'S
i don't think there'll be a trade BECAUSE i think
they want to keep the powder dry for for next
year in a, Quarterback AND i think that you look
for something on the wave war that might improve your.
Depth BUT i don't think you're going to have a
two or three that just pops up on the wave of,
(01:27:52):
War so you, know what you're really doing is just
improving the back end of the.
Speaker 5 (01:27:57):
Room do you agree that most of the guys you'd
pick up on the waiver, wires or just guys you
want to see yourself, firsthand right in your camp so
you can assess whether they can be a contributor or.
Not or do you think that they look at guys
and say that guy can make a difference in our? Team?
Speaker 11 (01:28:12):
UH i mean they did that With briggs on the defensive,
line right that they thought they saw enough that they
thought he could supplant some of the guys that they
had already had in. CAMP i think it's a little
bit different with, receiver BUT i just think what the scarcity,
is there's not really a good chance that we're gonna
improve that. ROOM i think it's more likely that we
(01:28:33):
might improve the tight end.
Speaker 1 (01:28:34):
Room, Right because that's the, point because it's right, There.
Kyb because what we're ultimately going to decide at waiverwire
time is random. Guy is he better Than Tyler johnson
or whatever name we, say or is it an inconsequential.
Difference if it's, inconsequential then we're not doing. ANYTHING i
think what people are saying is it's not we're not
looking for receiver five and. Six we're looking for a
three or. Two if that. Exists out of the, universe
(01:28:56):
and that is unlikely to be cut in waiver wire,
land so that likely only happens via. Trade and who
is that guy that someone is giving up on THE
a two or three that fits our. Profiles so that's the.
Speaker 11 (01:29:07):
Question and there are so many moving pieces if you
want to bring in An Aalx, pierce, Right, like what
does it cost to bring AN a in terms of
money and draft? Picks like for, me the discussion Around
Alec pierce would start with a fourth and the.
Speaker 1 (01:29:22):
Sixth, Yeah so The Devon veile ideal that just happened
with The Saints, broncos.
Speaker 5 (01:29:27):
Would you do?
Speaker 11 (01:29:28):
That that's where that's where it. STARTS i would do, that,
okay BUT i also would, want you, know a twenty
four hour window to talk terms with.
Speaker 1 (01:29:35):
Him so, right so he's not just having the one
year deal, thing, Right?
Speaker 5 (01:29:39):
Okay, Yeah but the problem is where the wave wire
doesn't well the, trades the trades.
Speaker 1 (01:29:44):
For, me a trade. Situation. Right what do.
Speaker 5 (01:29:47):
You think about my comment about more depth at? Linebacker you,
Know i've been kind of in and.
Speaker 11 (01:29:53):
OUT i was trying to get the kids out to soccer,
camp to be honest with.
Speaker 1 (01:29:56):
You, Now, okay so let Me so the real question is, This,
kyle when's the last time you shoot it?
Speaker 11 (01:30:01):
Up you, know they didn't they didn't have football in
my high. School they have it. Now at the, TIME
i was six,' seven, you know two hundred and.
Speaker 5 (01:30:11):
Thirty pounds so.
Speaker 1 (01:30:12):
So you're saying that you still have some years of.
Eligibility left that's what. You're saying is THAT what i, just.
Speaker 11 (01:30:16):
Heard the knees from years of playing basketball and rugby
are a little, bit shot so. Too bad, it's yeah
it is a little.
Speaker 5 (01:30:24):
Too bad wouldn't want to run into you in the
middle of, The lane i'll tell.
Speaker 11 (01:30:27):
You, THAT yeah i mean that's the but, YOU know
i would have loved to have played if my high
school had at. THE time I think i could have
caused some damage off.
Speaker 5 (01:30:35):
The, Edge, yeah kyle what do you think about what
we were talking about before about the other teams stacking
the box and then when what Do the?
Speaker 1 (01:30:42):
Jets do basically the daring. Adjustment, Fields right.
Speaker 11 (01:30:45):
So if I'm, THE jets i, welcome that right because
they're plus one in the run game With fields LIKE
if i think that if they show a stack box
where they're gonna have to dedicate nine guys to really
impact or, you know mitigate the, run game then you're
(01:31:05):
gonna have guys, running free Like and fields can hit guys.
Running free he's he's he's completely enough passes and shown
enough as a passer where he doesn't warrant total disrespect
in the in the. Throwing game that's that's my feeling.
Of it but that, that said he might not be,
(01:31:26):
the answer but he's worth the look like this is
this is two bites of the Apple for gland to develop.
A quarterback one would a, veteran guy one with the. Draft,
guy yeah and, YOU know i understand people's Doubts. About
fields he hasn't done. It yet he hasn't been able to.
Stay healthy, but like if he is able to be
(01:31:46):
out there for seventeen games and this is the best
offensive line, HE has i don't see why he can't
get to thirty two. Hundred yards it's only like one
hundred and eighty nine passing yards, a game.
Speaker 5 (01:31:55):
Like REALISTIC and, i think do you Think you're i'm
right in my assessment and this would be true actually
of any. Real quarterback is that hitting a guy who's,
wide open which is Really what fields, can do and
he likes going to the. Tight end and when the
other team is going to stack, the box you're probably
gonna have three tight ends in, the, game uh in
anticipation that one of them is going to. Break, free
(01:32:18):
right that's.
Speaker 11 (01:32:19):
Exactly right you're gonna have controlled chaos because we're gonna
be hopefully going to be able to scheme things up
with With, with ankstrand and you're gonna have guys that
that are are taking a blocking demeanor that are gonna
be able to end up drifting out and and maybe
finding themselves open in the flat or, you, know uh
(01:32:40):
in in the middle of. The field so, let's see
let's just see if, THE experiment, i mean.
Speaker 5 (01:32:46):
We all bought Into the.
Speaker 11 (01:32:47):
Rogers experiment we, all said let's give it. A, try
yeah let's give this. A try, we haven't we haven't
really tried. This yet so we can go back to
the drawing board with the with the draft, last year
there was nobody that was real listic for us to
take in that draft last year, at all, you know
trading up from seven to one For cam WARD from i.
Speaker 5 (01:33:11):
Don't think we. Know enough do we know enough about
the class that'll come out. Next year at this point
to think that there's anybody that we, should target there's a.
Speaker 1 (01:33:20):
Lot of people that we're. Hoping for like you're talking, A,
Quarterback bob like there's a lot of people that were all.
Drooling of everyone talks about the quarterbacks are going to be,
really good but none of us. Really know and by,
THE way i just want to throw this comment UP
because i Mentioned it. Kyle Yesterday max, wente Says If
jackson hawes gets waived By the bills Of, the jets.
WHOOP in i doubt that habits so. Perhaps not although
the russ is, REALLY deep i don't know how the
(01:33:41):
combinations are going. To work he was a late, round
pick but a Thousand Percent jackson hawes is exactly what the.
Doctor ordered he's just a blocking man that's going to
be there for the next thirty years playing IN. The
nfl Give Me jackson HAWES and i will Give You
jeremy rutgers head on. A, pike yes.
Speaker 11 (01:33:56):
That was a great value pick. FOR them i think
you guy to look for Is The Chiefs. Jared wiley
he had an injury. Last year this is his second
year in. The league but they kind of have a good.
Depth there. Mm hmm i'm interested to see if he.
Shakes loose, all right let.
Speaker 1 (01:34:13):
Me get, let me let me, get back let me
get back to.
Speaker 5 (01:34:16):
THE question i just. Asked you any of the QB's
in college? Interest, YOU well, i.
Speaker 11 (01:34:21):
Mean if if we're gonna maintain the idea that we
want to run a. RUNNING quarterback i LIKE the i
like the Maturity Of lenora sella's and. The tools if
you're gonna try and develop, A guy.
Speaker 5 (01:34:36):
I'll give you a sleeper watch the watch the quarterback
Quarterback at illinois. This year he's because. He's played this
is going to be his, third year and he's really
gotten better every. Single YEAR and i don't think he's a.
World beader what's. HIS name i think he's DEFINITELY an.
Nfl prospect what's?
Speaker 6 (01:34:54):
His?
Speaker 5 (01:34:54):
Name?
Speaker 13 (01:34:55):

UP as i think he's, really MATURED and.
Speaker 5 (01:35:07):

watch a lot, of them and he's really gotten better.
Speaker 1 (01:35:13):
Every, year, okay guy, All, right kyle thanks brother for.
The call.
Speaker 5 (01:35:18):
Good weekend take care Guess.
Speaker 1 (01:35:20):
Our kyle clifton joining us here on. THE SHOW. J.
A C kaka jack is joining us with the, comments
saying when do the first? Cuts happen it's not first,
cuts anymore there's, no waves so cuts could happen immediately
basically after the. Preseason Game the jets could immediately start getting.
To work every team In The National football League, By
tuesday august twenty six must have the rosters down by
(01:35:41):
four o'clock from ninety players to. Fifty three so it's
all by that four, o'clock date and then over the
next whatever the math is, on that that's twelve the next.
Twenty hours then waiver claims happens and those are revealed
on noon the. Next day so that's all. The cuts
that's how, they happen and that will be. Happening here
Quarterback in Illinois Is.
Speaker 5 (01:36:01):
Luke Altmeyer.
Speaker 1 (01:36:03):
Luke altmeyer let's put him on the. Draft. Board baby
i'm always ready to talk draft and aucus As a,
JETS fan i always have to be prepared. For that,
all right let's. Go back, that's it, all right let's
go back to the. Phone lines our boy one punch brig, Us,
back baby? What's up dar is waiting to.
Speaker 5 (01:36:19):
Talk to you after watching you the. Other day you're
ready to go some rock them sock. Them Football.
Speaker 6 (01:36:25):
But i'm always ready, to go. My man i'm always.
Ready anyway great points by, good.
Speaker 12 (01:36:31):
Morning gentlemen great points By mister Clifton And. Mike paisani
there mister. Jets TATTOO so I really i can't.
Speaker 6 (01:36:39):
ADD anymore i want to. Be REDUNDANT so i guess
the ONLY thing i really have to say at this
point is About The matt.
Speaker 12 (01:36:46):
Snell situation, YOU know i think it's really admirable about
everybody trying to bring. Reconciliation, here sure but you, KNOW
what i think a lot of things have to do
with pride and a lack, of humility and really no
lawyer really owes anybody anything once your time. Is Up
And matt snell is a great, you know he's a. Great,
PLAYER possibly i really don't know anything about his, personal
(01:37:10):
life as, you know as far as being, A person
I guess bob would know BETTER than. I would but you,
know what there comes a time, when things you, know
things if you, can't reconcile you just have. TO accept,
i mean maybe he's just he just got, you know
sometimes the first person has to, reach OUT and i
don't think it's going to Be the jets are, you know?
Speaker 6 (01:37:29):
WOULD he, I mean i just don't think that's going.
Speaker 5 (01:37:31):
To happen and.
Speaker 1 (01:37:31):
It doesn't it's going To Be. Matt snell so now.
Speaker 12 (01:37:34):
We're, here, Hey listen we've all had relationships in our life,
and sometimes, you know it just results. In separation if
one party, doesn't come somebody has to step. Out first and,
that party, to me seems like it has to be,
You Know matt snell has to put a lot of
pride into.
Speaker 6 (01:37:51):
The background, YOU know, i mean we don't have in.
Speaker 5 (01:37:55):
Your in your. Working career have you ever been? THE
Boss i we've had our.
Speaker 6 (01:38:00):
Own business my dad was.
Speaker 5 (01:38:01):
My, Boss, okay no let me ask. You this if
a good employee of a good former employee of yours
that come to you AND said i need a REFERENCE
or i need, a recommendation would there been any hesitancy
at all to give it to.
Speaker 12 (01:38:16):
That, person well when you say, Good employee i'd have
to know the, whole background what, they do booth inside.
Speaker 5 (01:38:22):
The, guy okay let's. BE specific a guy that had
worked for you for eight to, ten years had always,
been reliable had produced when it was really, you know important,
for you like that last quarter of the year when
you wanted to make the numbers and such for the organization,
and such and, the guy the guy leaves or, he's
(01:38:45):
whatever whatever the, reason is he leaves and he comes
back to you the next year, and, SAYS hey i
got a chance to get a JOB at x company
not competitive with you in. Any, way okay in a completely.
Different FEEL can i get a reference? From you OR
can i get, a recommendation a written recommendation, from you
(01:39:05):
because that's what the only thing that stands between me
and getting, that job because that's what Happened To Matt
SNeW and i think that there's really no reason at
all Why the jets could not have given either of those.
Speaker 12 (01:39:18):
Two, Things, right well as long as you don't live your,
life carpet, you know in, different, compartments, yes okay because
you could be, two persons, you know one inside the
job and went outside. The Job and i've seen that
happen on. Many, occasions okay so. Personal lives if his
personal life, was, CLEAN yes i would, give him, you
(01:39:39):
know a recommendations as long as his, you know daily
work was, you know is acceptable and he was, you know.
Quality work, but. Yes definitely but you KNOW what i
guess the problem comes here is that It was johnson
who wanted, you know that it was brought to to
give him.
Speaker 6 (01:39:56):
The, recommendation.
Speaker 5 (01:39:58):
No this Happened with leon he in, nineteen seventy.
Speaker 1 (01:40:01):
And that's a whole.
Speaker 12 (01:40:02):
DIFFERENT story, i, Mean Yeah so johnson's he's got the
smartest tack in, the box you. KNOW that, i MEAN he's,
i mean he's, you know you could see the way
he run he ran, the team.
Speaker 6 (01:40:13):
YOU know i mean it's so as far as, BUSINESS world, I.
Speaker 12 (01:40:16):
Mean i don't think he has a lot to Do
with Johnson and johnson as a matter. OF fact I
mean i don't know as a matter, of FACT but
i believe THAT so i don't he's sort of like
oblivious to a lot Of.
Speaker 5 (01:40:28):
Things, johnson, well, yeah right and that's and that's what
we're talking about here as far As the jets making
the Overture Because matt fields that he was really wronged in.
Nineteen seventy but.
Speaker 6 (01:40:40):
We were all we were all wronged in, our lives
every one. Of us, you know.
Speaker 5 (01:40:43):
We're all again, IF again i, you know the world is.
Different today You can't if somebody calls, you now, it
says tell Me About. Joe smith did? He work all
you can answer is did he work? For you how
did he work? For you you can't even give an
assessment of whether he was a good worker or a.
(01:41:05):
Bad worker you can't even, Say yes i'd hire HIM
or i wouldn't. Hire him but it was a different
world back in nineteen, seventy four and we were in
the midst of a terrible crisis with people out of
work and bed a big guess shortage problem in, the
country and inflation.
Speaker 6 (01:41:20):
WAS running i lived through. THOSE times i know.
Speaker 5 (01:41:23):
Exactly WHAT and i, did too AND happily i. Was
Working but matt needed, a job and he had been
in the construction industry when he was a. College kid
He helped bill. Shea stadium most people don't. Know that
and he had a chance to become a foreman for a.
Construction company and he went To the jets run By The,
(01:41:43):
hess organization, say hey can you give me a REFERENCE
that i was a good? Employee here and how could
anyone On the jets have Felt That matt snell was
not a, good employee and especially after what he Did
In super bowl three and how his career ended on
the field where he, almost died, you know from. A.
(01:42:05):
RUPTURE sure i mean that's and that, And, that dave
that's the crux Of What matt snell has been holding
inside and being upset about. For years and, you KNOW
as i, SAID before i just think if we're Gonna
get woody or wood he's ever going to get up, And,
say okay let's do, something here let's bring him back into.
(01:42:27):
The family the only way that's going to happen is
we're going to have to heap Praise on woody, And,
say woody you are a, great guy and we know
your heart is a jet and you can be a
hero to us and to a lot Of the jet fans.
Out there and all you got to do is you've
got to make the. Big gesture you've got to make the.
(01:42:47):
First move and that's what we're. Talking, about well, you
know that's. Very admirable, you know, in reality we would
hope that that. Would happen but what are the odds
of really? Dead happening, you know this guy is this
guy is. Really asleep he's he he does, you know
he doesn't have any feel, for things would he, you
know he really doesn't have any FEEL.
Speaker 6 (01:43:07):
Because i mean just look at the way he's run
the team since as he's. OWNED it, i mean you have.
Speaker 12 (01:43:12):
To be a, you know to be a good owner means,
you know you just don't stick your nose and when
it's too late like he did.
Speaker 6 (01:43:17):
LAST year, I mean i MEAN he's i mean he.
Speaker 12 (01:43:20):
Has to be a, good owner, is proactive and he's he's,
you know he's got his he's got his heart into,
the team, you, know fully, you know, you know just
because your name's on, the papers, the owner you, Know.
THAT bob, I mean i have.
Speaker 6 (01:43:32):
ALL business i work. FOR people i still, work today,
you know and you, know what you have to have
your nose, in there even there's.
Speaker 8 (01:43:39):
An.
Speaker 6 (01:43:39):
EMPLOYEE now i feel so Bad For matt.
Speaker 12 (01:43:41):
SNeW because i Watched That. Super bowl if it wasn't,
for him we weren't winning that game because he ran his. Brains,
OUT okay i, MEAN he i mean.
Speaker 6 (01:43:50):
He was you really want to say it that he
was the M. V p we, know that we know
he was the M. V p, Right, course Yes, what
bob what would you say it was the, you know He.
Speaker 5 (01:44:01):
Was i'd say. He was he was the and you know.
He is he has disdained any COMMENT that i made
to him during my interviews with him that he thought
he was that he should have been the M. V
P he's I'M never i don't. Believe that i'm never gonna.
Say that And And sonny werblin bought him a car
two weeks After The super bowl Bottom, of cadillac a Mint,
(01:44:23):
green cadillac because, HE said i thought you were the
co M. V p and. He ran he ran like
like A wild bronco. That day no single cold could take.
Him down they had.
Speaker 6 (01:44:35):
TO off, i mean, but yeah would you say co M.
V p we knowed why that whiz because You Know, Joe.
Speaker 5 (01:44:45):
Joe joe joe stirred. THE drink, i mean there's no doubt.
About it he was the, difference.
Speaker 12 (01:44:50):
Maker RIGHT but I mean i always appreciate him for
those years that they ran.
Speaker 6 (01:44:55):
THE ball, i Mean before boozer got hurt that. KNEE injury,
i mean there was. RUNNING tandem, i mean.
Speaker 5 (01:45:02):
He was he Was The gail sayers Of The American
football league before when he heard.
Speaker 12 (01:45:06):
That knee in a way they used to do the
surgeries they were never the same the. Assault surgeries when
you looked at guys knees AFTER a cl surgeries in the,
old days it.
Speaker 5 (01:45:15):
Was frightening it was because it was experimental.
Speaker 6 (01:45:18):
Back, THEN yeah i mean it, was right but but
you remember.
Speaker 5 (01:45:22):

uh you know it. Was crazy one of my favorite Players,
was RIGGINS and i was really upset when they got Rid,
of riggins and we all know what he ended up
Meaning for washington And Their super. Bowl run if you
want to talk about a running back that took a
(01:55:54):
game over and really pulled the team Through The, super
bowl no guy and a running back position ever Did
What john riggins did To pull washington Into A.
Speaker 5 (01:56:05):
Super BOWL and I see i see a Lot of
Riggins in allen, Right.
Speaker 4 (01:56:08):
Now Yeah in.
Speaker 1 (01:56:14):
Braila now and you're talking, about yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:56:18):
Because he'll make his own yards, for you but if,
you don't if you don't bring, him down he'll. Be
gone he's got enough speed to take it.
Speaker 4 (01:56:26):
All, away yeah he's a. Fast guy riggins was a
track star in college and nobody really forget his speed
when he broke around. The outside but he was. A
punisher he looked for. That contact he was a. Special
guy i've seen documentaries. On him he was. Just incredible and,
you know looking, forward here, YOU know i was really,
(01:56:50):
you know, Every Year hope springs eternal football is a.
Big part jet football is a big part of. My life,
You know i've BEEN where, i LIVE where, i go
everybody associates me With. The jets, you know it's.
Speaker 5 (01:57:06):
My thing.
Speaker 4 (01:57:06):
You, know yeah if we ever get to The, TO
broadway i certainly deserve a seat in the convertible going
down with the confetti flying on. My head i'll Make
sure i'm, in there and hopefully we'll all.
Speaker 5 (01:57:20):
Be there save me. A, seat yeah, you know it's.
Speaker 4 (01:57:24):
Getting late in. The game but the, reality is, you know,
this year, you know, LAST year i was. PRETTY heartbroken
I thought rogers would have given us the, best chance,
you know to Get A, super bowl and. He's gone and,
you know now we have a new, situation Here and
i'm really Hopeful and i'm confident With With aaron GLENN
(01:57:46):
because i see a leadership there that really has been
lacking in. Our, coaching really the only two leaders as
COACHES that i could see in the last thirty Years
as Parcels And. REX ryan I Thought rex ryan was
a great leader. Of men he, inspired guys and he
got guys to play above their above, their level and
(01:58:09):
got guys very very excited to hit and. Play football
and THAT'S what I See aaron. Glenn doing i'm really
HOPEFUL and i, never thought, you know we all look
at rosters and we're all caught UP with pff and
all the young. Guys today they're all caught up with
the players and the and who they are and what their.
(01:58:30):
Stats are but there's not enough emphasis put on what
a coach can do to get the best out of.
That player and FROM what i see starting off is
that it seems to Be That aaron glenn has generally
got these guys. BROUGHT in, i, mean obviously, you know
(01:58:51):
we're not gonna we're not going to see what kind
of coach he is until he really faces adversity where
we have a loss or two and how he could
get these guys going and if, we're down how it's.
Gonna work but the TWO things i think are gonna
be a major difference this year is, the coaching the
mistakes being down and our Offensive Coordinators. GUY angstram, i,
(01:59:17):
mean look we don't, know yet nobody really knows who
we're gonna be. Looked at but he seems to have
even on a, Vanilla offense he's schemed guys wide open in,
the preseason and. That's big, YOU know i don't see
any of our offensive coordinators that have been able to
scheme guys open or have any. Creativity whatsoever because you,
(01:59:39):
know IT and i, Know it Bob and paul sees.
IT too I mean i. WATCH games, I mean i'm.
A goer i just gave up my, season TICKETS but
i haven't missed an opener in probably, thirty years personally
going to it with. My boys BUT what, i see,
you know with this TEAM is i see that the
(02:00:02):
ground and pound thing is going to be, really GOOD
and i see if we could properly put these guys
in position that we're going to score up a decent
amount of points on. DEFENSE offense i Really like WILKES
because i. Think this, you know we didn't do. ENOUGH
blitzing i mean, last year if you looked and we
(02:00:23):
weren't able to get to, the quarterback, you know we
didn't really do much to. Mitigate that we, didn't blitz
and when we did we had success, doing it but
we didn't stick to. That plan wouldn't you agree, with?
Speaker 5 (02:00:35):
That, guys, YEAH yeah. I do you KNOW what i
love about his coaching, so far and this is just,
very basic is as we saw in the first Game
when fields ran for, the touchdown is that the wide
receiver on, the play who knew he wasn't going to
get the ball on, the play still completed his route
(02:00:56):
and kept his man Away from fields as feels headed
to the. End. Zone right and that's such a big part,
of football is doing your job to to the completion
of that play because that's what that's what it's drawn up.
To be there's, a reason, you know why you. Do
that the OTHER thing i really Like About glenn glenn
(02:01:18):
doesn't seem like we have to do it just. For
now he's he's trying to get these guys and, HE himself,
i Think and Boot and mujie have more of a,
long term, you know attitude about building. The team they
know they're not going to build the team in, one
year even maybe in, two years but you put the
building blocks in place and, next year, YOU know i
(02:01:43):
don't see him as a playoff team, this year but
next year maybe they compete for a, playoff spot and
by year three they're a playoff team and.
Speaker 4 (02:01:50):
Maybe better, you, KNOW look i don't see any, reason why,
you know the team the way. THEY'RE constructed, i mean we're,
you know some people say we're six pieces away from being.
A contender i don't see it. THAT way i see
a couple of little plug and plays here. And there
we do have some really really good talent on this
(02:02:11):
team that we really. Didn't have, you Know when solid
took over in, twenty twenty it was a. HORROR show
i don't Think that glenn is inheriting a. BAD team
i think he's inheriting a really. Good team and. We had,
you know everybody looks at us, Last year oh we
only had, Five wins but, you know when you really look,
(02:02:32):
at it we really could have had nine wins, very
easily with a couple of stupid mistakes made here. And
there the kicking game, one game the defense giving up
two drives to mediocre quarterbacks that lost us. Two, games
this that and the other thing could have been a
whole different. Component here and THAT'S where i see that
(02:02:52):
those little Changes that aaron glenk. Can make keeping guys
sharp and what they could do and how they, do
things and cutting down on the mistakes the penalties especially
will end up with a lot better result at. The
End so i'm OPTIMISTIC as i, always AM and i
can't wait for the season. To start.
Speaker 1 (02:03:11):
I'm Excited, so neil you and you said you and
the boys are all coming to? Week? One right or
are you guys going to be There for? WEEK five,
I Mean.
Speaker 14 (02:03:19):
Jet's cowboys i'm taking it game. By Game, pay okay, All,
RIGHT well I mean i'm not GOING to. I committed
i said, To myself i'm not going to get to.
ANY games i want to see the first. FOUR go
i want to be at least if.
Speaker 4 (02:03:32):
We, don't look if we go on in two aut of,
a gate, you know you know that drops us to
about a twenty percent chance of making. A playoffs so?
Speaker 5 (02:03:40):
What if what if the games?
Speaker 4 (02:03:41):
Are, CLOSE yeah, i, Mean look i'm looking, Like, You
bob i'm looking for a. Competitive game i'm looking for
us to make the effort all the. Way through and
YOU know i can enjoy the game watching it at
home just as MUCH as i can. Go, going honestly
going to. The game the only good EXPERIENCE as i
have her in the in. THE tailgates, I mean i'm a. Tailgate,
(02:04:03):
mania yeah you know THE the.
Speaker 5 (02:04:04):
Nfl DID the nfl did research, about five five or ten.
YEARS ago i knew the research director AT, the nfl
and she was telling me they had a huge problem
because a lot of the season ticket holders finally reached
that Realization, THAT hey i can stay at home and
have an easier time and a better time and get
as many BEERS as i like and have IT whenever,
(02:04:26):
i WANT and i can get up during during the commercials.
And such AND the nfl has really got a problem
as far as filling that ballpark with more than, just
numbers but.
Speaker 1 (02:04:35):
Getting we won't have. That problem Week Five Baby jets
cowboys against Seventy Five Boy Green coffee club Members and
jet fans head into.
Speaker 5 (02:04:43):
That game same same offer to YOU as i Gave
To dave by. The book and if YOU think, i.
Speaker 4 (02:04:48):
Read, BE honestly I think i read. The book was there?
A story was there a story in THERE that I
never there was a guy that made a comment that
he betted a large amount of money Against the jets
because the night Before The. SUPER bowl i believe it
was the night Before The super.
Speaker 5 (02:05:07):
BOWL was afl.
Speaker 4 (02:05:08):
Championship game it was the championship game where he came
out of a hotel at like five in the morning
and this, guy said there's no way he's going to
win a game.
Speaker 5 (02:05:15):
Because He, was actually we didn't we didn't have. An
egg we didn't have anybody saying that they were betting.
Against them but because they've seen that on well, you
know clips of documentaries. And SUCH but i did have
the fact that policemen said that they saw him coming
out of the hotel room and out of the hotel
and god knows what time he got to the ballpark,
(02:05:36):
early enough which wasn't always.
Speaker 4 (02:05:38):
The, case well, You know joe was a super, talented
individual and you know he had that mindset like, you know,
to me, you know he was so AMAZING, like, lt
right everybody has these DOCUMENTARIES on lt and how he
could basically party all, night long come to the stadium
without practice and just on a show and get three
(02:06:01):
sacks and a force fumble in a game when he
was not even he didn't even sleep the night before
or even the night before that because he was on
a cold.
Speaker 5 (02:06:10):
YESTERDAY afternoon i just happened to come across a condensed
game Of the jets Against The oakland raiders in nineteen,
seventy two and this is at the end of name
of his career As, a JET and i was still
amazed at what he was able. To do and he
didn't have the quick setup that he'd had when his
legs were much younger and he was in much. Better
(02:06:32):
shape but, my goodness the arm and his ability to
hit the open receiver or even to hit a receiver
with two or three guys around them was. Just remarkable the.
Speaker 4 (02:06:42):
Thing that most people don't realize is that when he Was,
at alabama his Coach Was, paul Brown right Bob Coach.
Paul bryant he said that the best athlete he ever
Coached Was. Joe namath so what a shame of it
was that his knees got hurt so early in his
career that we really not didn't get a chance to see, his, athleticism,
(02:07:07):
which man if he was in today's league with the
amount of things they can do with the, knee problems
because like the previous, callers said once these guys get
a knee problem in, those days you know your your
your career was over because they didn't have, the surgery,
you know surgical ability to bring you back like they.
Speaker 5 (02:07:26):
Do today at the press Conference when namath was introduced By,
the jets their their their medical staff had their first
chance to look at. His knees and after looking at
his knees in, the bathroom they came out and they Whispered,
to werblin you better get yourself with a.
Speaker 1 (02:07:42):
Backup Quarterback, Right, well neil thank you so much for. Calling,
in brother. Appreciate it, and hey.
Speaker 4 (02:07:51):

Jet Tattoo if allen ever came into, my house he'd
have a. BIG problem i don't think he'd get, out
(02:08:12):
ALIVE but. I do, You, Know look Alan. Is alan
we always need a villain in, the WORLD and I
think allan loves the role. Of Villain and i'm okay
with that because, guess what we need somebody to punch
on once we become, a Winner, Right paul once, we
win we'll be Looking, for alan.
Speaker 1 (02:08:29):
Won't, we yep he's gonna be the human punching bag
for all. OF us i look forward. To, IT well
