Steelers reporter quote. His legs are probably one of his
most dominant traits. So we just try to eliminate that
and force him to have to play quarterback. If we

So let me ask you this because some people are
debating this sort of in the universe, because essentially, what
Brandon Eckles is saying here is that Justin Fields is
a dynamic running quarterback. He's one of the most dynamic
running quarterbacks in the league. He is second all time
in single season rushing yards in his single season delivering
it not for a career, a single season. He is
the second most rushing arts all time, only behind Lamar Jackson.

So he's pretty good there. And what Brandon Eckles is
also saying is that bulloy that Justin Fields is pretty
inconsistent as quarterback. If we could get him to just
do that solely that, well, I think we're going to
be pretty good as a defense. That's our goal. Do
you take this quote that's on your screen as a
shot or not? Because some people are going back and
forth on whether it is or isn't.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's shot. I would tell you
that a lot of times. A couple of years ago,
people were saying that it's about Lamar Jacks, Right, there
was a there was a period of time where he
was not showing all the skills that we now know
he has, and they're like, well, we just need to
contain them and let.

Him throw the ball and then that'll sort itself out.
So is it a shot?

I don't think he meant it as a shot, right?
Which is he on a scale of your grading his
ability as a running quarter back or as a pocket passer,
which is higher? And so yeah, obviously, in my opinion,
it's the running quarterback with the ability to throw, and
it's not the pocket passer. So obviously you'd want to

go make him play to his lesser qualified attributes, if
that makes sense. So yeah, I don't I don't see
it as a shot that it just makes sense. It's
what everybody says, right, what do you want to do?
You know, for this quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, what do you
want to do? You want to put pressure on him
and give him only one auction. It's up to throw
on the run. Now he can do it, but that's

not what's He's not Brett Favre, right, He's more like
Brett Statue.

Well, yeah, so again you mentioned it in your opening soliloquy.

Brandon Eckles says, basically, the Steelers' goal is to get
Justin Fields to play quarterback, which is supposed to be
sort of insulting because Justin Fields apparently can or can't
play quarterback very well, is what people say. But let's
go back to this quote. This is from Aaron Glenn
in March, shortly after getting hired. Quote, We're going to
let him play quarterback. That's what he's always wanted to do.

I'm not saying he hasn't a chance to play that,
do that another to play that, or do that in
other places. That's not my issue. I know what I
want to do with that player. Obviously want to utilize
his legs, but want to give him a chance to
go out there and play quarterback. End quote. So it's
sort of funny, interesting, whatever. Apparently the Steelers and the

Jets want the same thing, Justin Fields to play quarterback.
So you know, I'm curious pop that Justin Field's results
in the preseason and training camp have been you know, uneven.
You know, there's been some good, there's been some bad.
What are the expectations as we head into the season opener?
Where now it counts? Now it's for real. Now the

Jets don't have to hide anything anymore. All the cards
are going to be on the table coming up tomorrow
at one o'clock. So I tell you this, what should
fair expectations be for Jet fans? If the Jets indeed
are going to let Justin Fields quote unquote play quarterback?

So the real answer is this, right, So, when you
have Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback, you send in the play.
But literally he's gonna do whatever he wants, that's right, right, Yeah,
And that's not the case with Justin Fields, and that's
been the detriment or the reason his career has gone
the way it has. Sky Go Bears drafted him. Did

they design an offense that played to his strengths? No,
they did not, Right the Pittsburgh Steelers, who knew what
they did. They were like the Giants. This year, We're
just going to collect random quarterbacks and see how it works.
Out and so for Justin Fields to be successful, the
offensive coordinator, your buddy, the guy that's apparently twelve feet tall,

your buddy there. He's going to design a game plan
that it's a mixture of I'll call it harbaugh Esque
football because we've never seen Aaron Glenn's team take the
field before, but some hard nosed football, running the ball,
play action right, play to the tools you have on
the field, and that is a resounding three headed running game.

A talented wide receiver, a hope to be a transition
rookie at tight end. But that doesn't lend itself to
the offense we had last year, what I just said,
and then you have a bunch of question marks and
second widers here, so that doesn't lend itself. So it's
all about the play calling because you're not going to
let Justin Fields go out there and do whatever he wants, right,
There'll be times when he has options, So calling the

right game for him and playing to the you know,
you can't make a Sioux Flea with a fish mcmuggets
or whatever.

the team that you have, build the recipe to the

when he was doing a conversation with the NFL Network
insider Judy Batista, longtime columnists who joined the show during

explained to Judy that Justin Field's one of the things
that they really like about him. He has quiet confidence
about himself and quote, he can really throw the deep ball,
really really well. Obviously his legs are something that's dynamic,
not just in college but the NFL as well. I
just think he's ready to break out as a top

notch quarterback. So he's going to do everything he can
to be one of the better ones that we're going
to coach our asses off to make sure he does
a good job out there. End quote. And again for
proper context, this was a couple months ago, not that
anything of what he said would have changed during that time,
but he believes he could be that. And again you
mentioned it about previously Lamar Jackson. Now that's the loftiest

of comparisons, of course, because just Lamar Jackson. Excuse me,
while Bill Paullian's famous thing about calling him a running
back and all these other things, or running back masquerading
as a quarterback. You know, eventually, obviously he broke through
and is a multi time NFL MVP and one of
the best quarterbacks in all football. So he was able

to break through. So if I'm justin Fields, I'm sure
that's the poster that's on my wall. But justin Fields
is justin Fields, and we have to see what that
ceiling is. I believe this is the best situation he's
ever had, so we should see whatever that version is.

of the best quarterbacks.

He's he's a great regular season quarterback. He's won the
MVP twice the last time I checked. That's the most
Valuable Player, the best quarterback, the quarterback normally wins the MVP.
And he's done it twice.

I would I would hope that we're going to see,
you know, pounding the ball on my hope as we
see pounding the ball, Justin Field's throwing the ball around
the yard to Garrett Wilson and then one on a
play maybe you know, first play of the second half,

right after Agent zero has about seventy five yards rushing
the first half. Next first play of the second half,
the play action pull it out throw out to Arian
Smith who's sitting there in the end zone eating popcorn.
So that's what I want to see.

I just can't wait because again, with all these Justin
Fields jokes and these elitist Steelers people and Steelers fans,
they don't think that Justin Fields can hit the broadside
of a bar. And so if I'm justin, I am
as motivated as anyone can ever be. They benched me,

but this entire season is sort of the audition that
I'm the quarterback that I know I could have always
been coming out of Ohio State. So we'll see if

It's been a topsy turvy situation. I'll give you guys

the sped up, accelerated version. Okay, first team so actually
before even the first team All Pro last year, about
a year ago to the date, Cam Hayward agreed to
a new two year, twenty nine million dollar extension with
the Pittsburgh's Dealers team captain. Whoo, everyone's happy, Okay, Cam
Hayward has his season. He has a first team All
Pro season. He was amazing. Cam Hayward immediately comes back

to Stews says, amen, uh, my contract doesn't reflect what
I I just did. I want more money. Steelers and
him have a disagreement over that, and that sort of
dragged out this entire offseason where he did a mini
hold in, he did some holding out, and then he
was practicing. He wasn't practicing. It's been a bunch of hoopla.
At the beginning of this week, on his podcast, he
was asked by his co host, are you going to

be playing on Sunday? He said, we will see, and
it was sort of cryptic and Mike Tomlin spoke later
that day and said, oh, he's definitely playing. And so
there's been this sort of tay to tay all week,
and this was Cam Hayward yesterday. Let's throw this up

the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cam Hayward refused to commit to playing

in Sunday season opener. Now, he didn't say he wasn't playing.
When he was asked, are you going to play in
the game, he said I'm preparing and then he just
kept dodging the rest of it, saying, you know, we'll
see what happens. Who knows all this other jazz and
why this is important and says I found this statistic
right before the show started. I'll tweet this out later.

When Cam Hayward was on the field last year, the
Steelers were the second best team in the league in
yards per Carrey so run defense. When he was not
on the field, they were thirty first in the league.
So he is a very sizable needle mover as it
pertains to their run defense, and even at the ripe
age of thirty six, he is a very important dog

to their machine. Now, I will say this pop before
you even say anything. So obviously it's up in the
year whether or not he's going to play. What's not
up in the years. He's expected to be a limited
purchaseiment in this game either way. Because of this unevenness
of his football activity, he is not expected to play
the full gambit of the Snaps even if he does
play in this game. But Pop, what do you make

This goes back to you know this side isn't This
is as a righteous as side of this contract discussion
we've had many times as any other. Right, this is
not what typically happens right where someone immediately signs a
deal and then immediately right Uh Hawk two is it?

And so you know, a contract's a contract. He's he's
been squishy, which makes the entire effort minimum value. Right,
It's not like any of these other players that have
held out and like they're all.

He's kind of like half asked it, if you will.
So his leverage is low, right because he has been participating,
you know.

So I do think it will be significantly impactful if
he does not play. My gut feel is he will play.
But he's done this whole thing oddly, right. You. I
think if you sign the contract, you play, especially since
it was a lucrative contract and it was only last year,
but in general, I have the feeling if you sign

the contract, you play it. And there are things called
escalator clauses and there that you can build into the contract.
If I'm an all pro, that kicks in this ten
million dollar option. It's how the Jets intelligently got Tyron
Smith to come play for them. That's his whole contract
is like six million. He could make twenty he didn't,

but that's you know, it's really him and his agents.
If you wanted this, you could have literally had it.
I am confident the Pittsburgh Steelers would have inked the
deal that would have had these escalator cause causing your
contract and your agent fire him.

So it's unlikely the way he's kind of half asked
this that the Pittsburgh's gonna give him anything, and the
way he's done it, it's going to impact his play
one way or another.

Two things here. First off, you're right, a lot of
people have been complaining about Hayward's agent must be terrible
because he could have included this in the contract and
did everything that you just said. Because apparently Cam Hayward's
defense for hey, guys, in the court of public opinion,
I don't know how you can't be on my side
that I'm coming back to the team seven months later
after signing this deal. Is Cam Hayward says in that meeting, right,

so they're talking about the extension and he's about to
sign this extension. Before he does, apparently this is Cam
hayward side of the story. He turns to people in
the room says, Hey, I'm gonna be back after this season,
after I have it all pro year. Everyone in the

like I was going to come back to the table
after that, which again goes back to your point Pop
