(00:00):
Oh oh my goodness, Hello folks, and welcome back to the Brawl Boxing
Podcast. I am Karen McCourt andI'm joined by coel host Colin mcgwigan and
(00:24):
Ram McLachlin. Guys were allowed tobe joined today by John Rader. John,
how are you doing? I'm good, I'm good. Thanks for having
me on, fellows. It's goodto be here and funny sit down with
you and have a chat. Goodman. I have the last few weeks
being John, Yeah, I meanstrange really after after last weekends. Good
(00:46):
but strange ending. Um, abit of downtime with the kids, but
I've got that lurking around in me, not not feeling myself at the moment,
so maybe a cold coming out inme or something. But yeah,
other than that, I'm still stillwas then still flying high. And how
long how long would you usually takeoff after a fight. Well, I'm
(01:07):
not gonna take off a week ortwo. But I was back spying Philips
cash last Wednesday just he's fighting onthe tenth in leads, so it's done
a little six rounds of him lastWednesday and not done much Jill since.
But we will start picked up runningagain this week and get back into it.
We'll touch on the strange events ofthe last couple of weeks down the
(01:30):
land in the podcast, but whenwe do this podcast, we'll like to
bring it back to the very beginning. How did you first get in the
bottom? Job? It's all aboutbringing back to the beginning. Em over
yere, you know, do youknow what that's Everyone is batter on me
for this. It's it's here's day, right right back to the start,
man, just like my mustache, harder harder you get in the bottom.
(01:53):
Funny enough, my dad good friendof Jimmy Oliver's the Oliver family, Spencer
Oliver and Danie Oliver, and hehad he's got a pub up in Barnett
so the local gym there. Umjust told me about it and yeah,
got me started up there when Iwas thirteen, I think it was.
And did did you at the start? Like a lot of a lot of
(02:13):
people we have on sort of likethey say, like you're either really shit
at the start or they were justnear release sort of polent. Then there
never seems to be any in between. Uh yeah, I'd say, I
don't know, it's hard to say. Um. Funny fact though, me
and me and Deltzora started the sameday at Finchley Boxing Club all the years
ago, which was a stranger Andyeah, um, I like to think
(02:37):
I could run before I could walkas such. I think I was trying
to do like Ali shuffles and sugararm swings and whatnot and bleeding back jabs
before I could even old end up. So yeah, I think I took
to it. No, I wasn'ta natural and a duck to water,
but I did enjoy it. Isunk about getting punched in the face that
I enjoyed. What was what wasdel Boy like? Was he a story
(03:00):
like? He was a few yearsolder than me, so I suppose he
was in like the older group, more with the seniors because he was he's
always been a big lampany, Butyeah, I think just a fresh faced
lunatic like he is. So hopeyou're common to your pick. John.
You've got obviously that one of thehopefully on the horizon. You've got the
(03:21):
biggest faith you'll see obviously against theAlexa Canello. We're hoping that will be
the next one in lame for youbut for us, like we speak about
it all the time about you knowthe effect of losing and boxing, And
I think you should be like abig inspiration for boxers because the way you've
reacted to defeats in the past, like and obviously you've got the unbelievable wins
against the Eleca Daniel Giagobs ex andyou've got hopefully the Canal Fake coming up.
(03:43):
That should be a big inspiration forfaders. How did you react to
your first average feat? First averagefeat was Billy Joe So, I mean
in the pros that is sorry,Um, I literally see it. As
the Fat said, it was moreof a learning process first time to in
twelve rounds. Um always had thatexcuse of it being on on away from
the show, always like it's alwaysbeen that thing if you need a knockout
(04:08):
to win as such, But listeningto a close fight didn't get hurt,
didn't get tons of miles and o'clock. I learned a ton from it,
So I always thought that was standme well moving forward, which it did
to an extent, But then obviouslyissues with weight and whatnot did cross me
further down the line. Were youable to be full time of boxing when
(04:28):
you were the first sort of afew years? Yeah, I mean I
am yeah, as soon as Iturned bro I was committed to it completely,
one hundred and ten percent. Obviouslyit wasn't wasn't easy in the start,
obviously you boxing. I was luckyenough to box I think three three
times in three months, um so, I mean after making a debut,
that's pretty pretty frequent, to befair. So I've done that. I
(04:50):
think I'd add a fight February,March and April and then set Tim October
November of a year. So thatwas quite an act the year for me,
which was which was good. There'sa whenever you look at your record,
you know your first k or youronly K offs the next black well,
and how did you rebound from up? Because a lot of people let
(05:11):
that defend their career and maybe maybeuse that as a skip board to kind
of get out of future big face. But you you've used to spur yourself
on. How did you do that? I think at the time it was
just the weight. It beaten methat time, this and all. Nick
Black landed a hell of a coupleof shots there, but I think I
was up on the score cards.I think it was at sixth round.
(05:31):
I think I was five rounds up. Boxing beautifully but just just the wilsful
off. He caught me with abody shot at the end of the fifth
and I think it just took everythingat me that had left in me,
And it wasn't a lot because I'dstruggled to make that weight and coming out
for the sixth round. I meanit did land a good shot, just
that I was on the attacking, landed a good camera shot high on the
(05:53):
temple, which was It was aweird stoppage at the time because I felt
like if Howard Fostered stepped in tenseconds earlier, there was no complaint for
me. But when it did stepin, I felt like I'd gone on
the attack again, niked defended.I took a backward step to try and
regroup, and then that's when Howardstepped in. So it was a weird
(06:13):
time to step in and call it. But listen, like I said,
learning curved. It hurt a lot. It was hard to get over it.
It felt like a long world backafter that, but there was there
was a lot to a lot totake from it, a lot of lessons
learned and things not to do again. Yeah, I get that. That's
what we always talked about. It'sthe over fact that people are sure scared
(06:34):
to lose and like the people you'veobviously fought, you've had an unbelievable career
and I feel that that should bean inspiration for other to take them because
that's what's bark, that's what Boxand his lack and massively at the minute
people scared the step up and you'vestepped up and you've been rewarded as well.
Yeah, I think it's nothing. We were at an area where everyone
(06:55):
wants to retire undefeated. That thatmay over area fifty one and no,
um, he's about fifty five.No now really any but let's be fairies.
Unless you unless you may verse,it's not realistic, is it.
I mean, look at Canelo,he's been beat he's stepped up and went
if you've got if you're if you'rewilling to step up and dare to be
great, then you're going to takethese risks. Um. So other fights
(07:19):
has done it in the past.Lomachenko went for a world time when your
second fight and come up shut Um. So you've got to dare to be
great and I think if you,if you do, it's it's a better
story and the end of it.Um. If people. If they make
a film on may Over's life, now you know what the ending is.
If they make a film on onsomeone else's life, they made a film
(07:41):
my life. Now be the interestingstory of what happened in them fights,
why it went wrong, what whatwent wrong? So so I'm happy the
way things have gone. I'm notentirely happy with the way things have gone,
but it's all for a lesson inlife, and and all that to
my story. I suppose that youcan find some like if if a fading
ends in a bad way, ifyou're if you're beat on points or you're
(08:03):
stopped, even if you think it'scontroversial, like it would be a better
upill to swallow, but you cansort of like say, well, I
know what it did wrong. Ican push on, I could beat that
after it was a rematching and sortof like tell yourself them sort of things.
But if you're the end of likethe column Smith, faith, which
was very controversial, is that secondand is that like a is that a
more second? And feeling if youif you maybe feel like you you know
(08:24):
you deserve to win the faint I'msure you had a many like a lot
of them faiths throughout your career, even in the amateurs where it's like a
robbery. How do you sort ofdeal with that because it must like second
second year from the sport of it. Yeah, that one was I suppose
more so sitting there because I couldn'tget straight back into it. Obviously COVID
come about. That was the endof two thousand and nineteen. Obviously twenty
(08:46):
twenty hit and with all the intentionsof starting off good and having a good
year, and I think I waspissed into fight June time for the b
A regular Obviously COVID hit and thatmessed up all the shows for the year.
So I didn't end up boxing untilDecember that year on the glogging undercard.
Um So, I mean from havingthat heartbreak of losing to Canada Smith
(09:09):
on a on a strange decision forthe titles. You don't want to dwell
on it, but all you had, all that was there, was to
dwell on it because nothing was movingforward, nothing was happening. It was
all just standing still in statement. So it was nice to finally get out
at the end of the year geta points win under my belt. I
was, I was there in caseanything happened to Callum and I had to
(09:30):
step in against Canello, so itwas that was worth also in the back
of my mind. But no,it's nice to get out, get the
end of the year, get outof the way, get a good win,
and then build to twenty twenty one, which we all thought was going
to be an even better year. But what started off slow again? Sorry
yeah, yeah, twenty twenty onewhich was still a slow year, but
(09:52):
then things look was going to openup, but still I didn't have boxing
until September time, so all thistime that I was hoping to really kick
on and progress my career off stoodstill tready and water really, which was
a shame. But obviously twenty twentyhit and we've got the Jacob's fighting.
It was a great start for meand we're finished with a great entity year,
So all that's behind me now andjust looking to build momentum now and
(10:13):
keep going. That's Jacob's faith wasobviously a brilliant faith and it was a
big win for you. How'd youfeel going into that where your confident that
because obviously he's a big name fromAmerica, that's a it's a good name
to have on your shiv as well. Isn't it. Yeah, fantastic name.
And I think before I turned pro, I was watching Jacob's fight,
so I mean I've seen him,seen him about. He's been around a
(10:33):
long time and listen it was peoplesay it was a closed fight. I
thought like, I won pretty comfortable. He had earlier success, but that
was always the plan. He wasgonna have earlier success and was going to
take over. But he's a greatname to over my record. He's only
been beat by the best, thepeer of Canelos, of Glove Kings and
myself now, so it's a great, great feat to have um. And
(10:56):
yeah, I mean for me,it was a great start to the year
and it was all about keeping thatmomentum. But it didn't did it really
keep the momentum that we wanted. But we finished on our high. So
yeah, twenty two a great yearfor me absolutely. What he touching on
faiths like that the Legs Faith concertFaith which was a big deal, especially
(11:18):
in Britain and stuff. Is yourremain sad different? And then and obviously
you've well can I hopefully coming upnext with there's going to be an even
next level. But is your remainsad different than their faiths or are you
of the opinion like every faith offaith, it doesn't matter who or is
there an extra better kick and you'rean extra better nerves in their big faith.
I put a massive amount of pressureon myself for the Jacobs, right.
(11:41):
I really had that as it's amust win. If not, I'm
done and retired, um. Andit really took the enjoyment out of everything
for it, whether it be thetraining, the runs, the fight week,
the whole thing in the bubble, really really took the enjoyment out of
the whole whole experience really, SoI knew once this come around with Parker
that I had to know that itwas a must win, but not put
(12:03):
some pressure myself just to just toenjoy the moment that bit more and not
be so tunal visioned into just gettingthrough things and getting it over with.
So I didn't. I enjoyed thisa lot more, save the memories a
bit more, And yeah, ittook more away from it, and it
enjoyed it all. And I thinkit showed so in the performance because I
(12:24):
didn't really get to show much inthe performance, but I think it just
showed all round in camp and throughoutfight week, talk to me about about
that experience, of the whole situationof what happened, because you weird name
months to fade again your faith andthen it's cut short. Yes you're a
victorious, but you don't get achance to properly fade. Would you have
done what he'd done in terms ofQuentin if you were in his position?
(12:46):
Listen, I don't want to.I don't want a bad mouth man.
He's got an injury, he's gota family to feed and whatnot. But
I've been in fights before when I'vefractured my hand in the second or third
round and gone on and got astoppage in the eph. So that was
in a British title eliminator against JaysWilson. So I've been there, I've
done it, and I've seen otherpeople do it. Um looking back at
(13:09):
now, I've watched the fight backups. I like that. I don't
know if Zach Parker has got muchof a left hand. See everything comes
off the right, so I justdon't know if he could have carried on
with just the left hand. Idon't know if he's got that there,
if that's if he's got an injuriesthat hand, if if he was only
going into and fight one handed,So I guess we'll never know. I
mean, it's in the days. He's done what he's done now we can't
(13:30):
change it. I felt like Iwas just starting to get a foothold in
that fight and really turn it.I think it was. It was a
close fight at the time. Iknow the judges had it. I think
two ddit him adding three rounds up. Steve Buns had me three rounds up,
one judge edit to all, andI just felt that I was really
starting to turn the screw in thatround, caught him a couple of times
and just walking him down that bitmore and just starting to laund my shot.
(13:52):
So I felt like I was,like I said, getting a foothold
in that fight, and I wasabout to start taking over. So I
think another couple of rounds I wouldhave I would have got what I wanted.
But whatever know now. So youtouched on it though when you were
saying about you didn't want to putyou want to not put too much pressure
on yourself and actually enjoy the weekwhen you were going into that fate um
(14:13):
with Parker, did you feel likedid you feel better in yourself even just
walk under the ring. Did youjust feel like, yeah, you're going
to put in a better performance andthe legs of your cubs. Yeah,
definitely. I think obviously I knewwhat Jake has booked to the table.
I knew that he was a greatfighter. He's list, he's not been
stopped by lights of Canello and Kolovkin, so I knew that he's got a
(14:35):
great chin, obviously very durable. Not that I was. I was worried
about trying and knock him out andI didn't have the stammins to last.
But I knew that I was goingto be in for a tough night's work
with him, and I knew thathe had the experience to make it an
ugly fight. So I suppose thatwas in my mind a lot. I
didn't want to I don't want tobe part of a board fight, to
fight to be exciting and whatnot. But when you're in there, he just
(14:58):
got a letter takeover and material likethat's going to be ums And the most
importantly think the thing was to winand move on and flatsy another day,
and ultimately that's what I did.But it was a tough fight and an
experience that I didn't really enjoy likeI should have see when you're see when
you're in the ring, like youtossed on at the or like um you
(15:18):
were saying you didn't want it tobe a born faith. That's something I've
always find fastening it and with boxerslike I always wonder. Spoke about this
a few times on the podcast withpeople. Do you have like them internal
thoughts in your mind during the faith? Where are you thinking sometimes this is
about lackluster or or I want tomake less exciting, or are you completely
just in the zone? How doesit work? Yeah? You do.
(15:41):
I remember I remember being in theSmith fight and I think I think got
to the full round or something wehad in exchange, and he threw a
couple of shots off, threw acouple of shots back in the crowd,
and I just thought to myself, this is probably quite a good fight to
watch, right. They sound likethey're enjoying it, So yeah, I
mean, it's that bit more tospay you on and kick you on off.
You can tell. I mean, obviously a box in Vegas, and
(16:03):
I think the first round was havingto look at each other and the fans
were booing the Mexicans baying for bloodstraight away. So that was a bit
where you have to pull yourself backand realize that you're doing this for you,
not for them. So like there'stwelve rounds, you got a woman
too, and not just get carriedwhen the first So yeah, I mean
you can you can feed into thecrowd a lot, and you can get
a sense of how the fight's goingand how they're enjoying it. But ultimately
(16:26):
it's about us getting the win andthe fires in the ring doing their jobs.
So we've got to kind of blurtthat out as such as well.
About fighting in Vegas, You've obviouslygot Canal all coming up hopefully. Would
you prefer that fate to be inVegas again or would you leg it to
be in a stadium in England?Listen, I mean Cannello is the man,
(16:47):
isn't he? So obviously Eddie Eddiementioned the Emirates, which I would
love. I think I could spiton it from a doorstep. That would
be great. Not that would spiton it because I'm an Arsenal fans,
so sorry. Um yeah, obviouslyit's it's within the distant walking distance of
my house. I would love that. Um, but Obviously, Canello's the
(17:11):
champ. He's got all the belts, all the marble, so I'd happily
go to Mexico or Vegas for thisfight. I mean, he's the he's
the champion. Obviously, I've workedhard to get myself in disposition, but
I don't expect to land it onmy doorsteps. So I'll go where go
go. I'm told, John, how do you prop for a fate because
obviously it's going to be the papersof your career to bed. It's a
(17:34):
massive faith. How do your um? I suppose like the last one,
but that bit harder, like wealways do. We always treat the next
fight is the toughest and the hardest, regardless if it's Danny, Jacob,
Zach Parker or Canelo. I mean, I treat these fights as if they're
my last and the hardest, soevery fighter gets more respect and they all
(17:56):
get one hundred and ten percent outof me. In camp um if I
he got to look at the numbersfor camping, spiring and running in my
in mycency work, they're always improvingand always always moving the boundaries. So
I'll train meticulous. I will haveno stone unturned and I'll make sure I'm
ready come fight, mate. SeeI actually spoke Daddy and Phoenix this with
(18:18):
he seems to think the Amorates isthe front runner. I mean, obviously
it all depends on Canal and Ifeel good. But do you think you
prefer to have it in the Amiratesover in Mexico or do you get that
away there for you because some boxersthrive. I'm not being the away fellow
regardless. I mean, I'm goingto be the underdog and Knella is going
to be the a Saturday Cards,so I'll still be the awayfighter in my
(18:40):
hometown if that's the case, likeI was against Jacobs, but I realish
being underdogs. I think I've I'mstronger with the undog mentality. I think
it brings the best out of meand it really spurs me on. So
whether it be Mexico, London orthe Las Vegas, the Rings, the
ring. Yeah, you've got stagefor Leonel Messagers, so we can we
(19:02):
can tag him in this and sayJohn radn't want you to walcome in Leonel
Messo la MESSI sorry. Um.I've got a signed shirt from actually from
PSG PSG shirts signed from him fromone of my friends Akhmed. So yes,
that's nice. That'll gind of framesoon. But yeah, just if
you do make it to the finalwhen you gets England, it's not common
(19:22):
home, MyD It's not just finalfinal thing on the Canalo so Dad.
He's obviously fought and beat a lotof Brittish guys and he has like an
ongoing joke with Addie that you know, he just keeps feeding him these British
guys and he beats them. Willyou be watching them performances in the lead
up the camp or do you sortof not taking hold of anyone of anyone
(19:47):
passing. It's each fate is adifferent faith, so you don't really need
to earn that respect. I don'treally like watching too much. I think
I watched one fight of Zapp parkersUm the fight didn't materialize that we thought
it wouldn't. It got cut short. But yeah, I think Tony Sims
obviously watches tons of video and staffand sorry not video. No one watching
(20:10):
your video any more day it's allYouTube, but Tony, Tony studies it
all when he shows me clips andwhatnot, And I think I like just
to to go of what he tellsme. So I'm listening to the game
plenty sets rather than second guessing.Um. I mean sometimes, obviously,
I've I've seen all the Canoes fightsin the past and seeing him against the
lights of Ryan Rhodes, Matthew HattonField in Cahn, so I know I
(20:36):
know what it's done and how itpans out. But well, I'm sure
I will watch that bit more ofCanelo and sit down with Tony and study
bits on and what we can workon. But I think we've known from
the day how to how we wouldfight Canello and what we do, so
I think I'll just stick to that. Just just said the ventest he's your
top five pound for a point ata minute. Well, I think Bill
(21:00):
Bivil and Canello need to be rightup there. Um. I put the
front of Davis up there. Obviously, it was with what he's done with
the cruiseweight to heavyweight. I mean, it's it's hard to put for me,
it's hard to put heavyweight up inthere. I'd love to put Fury
in there, but obviously he's onlygonna he's only gonna do what he's gonna
(21:21):
do it heavyweight. He can't movedown. He can't, then there's no
ways he can go to um otherthan that a new a looking forward to
a weekend shame. He's in againsta brick, but he's an unbelievable fighter
in a fearsome puncture. What didyou think of the weekend? John in
terms of Chisora, would you putthe murder bit earlier or do you think
(21:41):
that the rapp is ready to stepin when he didn't. I think the
ref the ref called it really well, and I mean the ref can only
advise the corner at the time, but I think it was. It was
a tough watch after a while, wasn't it. I Mean, we all
know what Fear is capable of,and I think Fury even took a bit
of pity at a point, justto go through emotions and and not going
(22:02):
to be mad. But yeah,I think when it got stopped it was
probably a few rounds too late, but I think it's lockly done a great
job. Yeah, yeah, Imean that was it was. It was
a tough fight to watch, likeas three boxing fans, and obviously yourself
as well. I'm sure you're ahuge boxing fan and you know del Boy,
which makes it even tougher to watch, but like he's done so much
(22:22):
for the sport, and that waslike it did it did seem like a
mismatch. It's easy to say thatin hindsight, but I suppose a lot
of people did think that going in. Um, do you think anyone can?
By the way, just on thepoint for a pinne less, did
you say to your aunt Da Davisor Alexander Sick for your second? Um?
I said both Jan Davis. Okay, that's okay, that was just
(22:45):
clear not up because most people don'thave Aunt Da Davison. So that's an
interesting great Joy Davison obviously. Well, I'm about to see the Garsia fight.
Um, and even the there's alot of fat for him there.
I mean, do you think youthink he beats Sukura? It's a tough
fight. I'd like to far.I'd love to see it as a fan.
(23:07):
I mean, I'm on the fence. There'd be a tough, tough,
tough one to cool. Um.Yeah, it's an exciting, exciting
fighting. Do you think we'll eversee it? I don't know. I
think we will see at the somepoint. I want to get your opinion
on one sancial faith that's actually happeningnext John, because, um, I've
seen Alma Williams faid at the weekend. I'm sure you maybe watched it too,
(23:29):
but you said you were spiring thePhoenix case. Do you think that's
a good faith for Phillicks and youthink he could be Almare Williams, Yeah,
definitely. I mean he's got he'sgot a fight on Saturday. Obviously
it leads um Brandy comes for thatunscathed, no injuries, and I think
then, yeah, I think I'ma Williams earlier next year. But this
is a great fight for both ofthem. It's gonna be a think it's
gonna be a WA final himator,So it puts him in a great position.
(23:52):
Obviously, Golofkin's champion's um, he'shis best days a world behind him.
So well that land on you andCanals on their card potentially, who
knows. I mean, I don'tknow how what they're going to say to
get due wise or time wise.But it's a good division. It's a
there's a lot of good fights there. Obviously you've got the U Bank Liam
(24:15):
Smith fight happening as well, sothey'll be looking for a spot like a
WBAR title. So there's good fightsfor the winner of this fight, whether
it be for the dough Bear titleor another fight moving forward. So well,
finally, it's obviously a fifth ofDecember as we're recording this Christmas in
three weeks, assuming are they arethey talking about this single to my audience?
(24:37):
For well, I assume so,I mean it's that or September,
isn't it. So I've not heardMandy since fight night. Um, hopefully
I'll bump into him in leads andsee what's happening. But yeah, hopefully
we can get some news and seewhether this is a good possibility or it's
just a smoke screen. But I'mhoping that he's true to his word and
(25:00):
we can get something. It's overthe line and look forward to sink the
mail weekend. So will you beable to enjoy enjoy your Christmas? Then?
Yeah, I think so what we'vegot we've got five months to ye,
so yeah, I think I'll begot to have a nice few rotators
and a nice bit of meat andveg. So yeah, be a nice
(25:21):
Christmas dinner, good man. WellJohn, we'll hopefully get you on in
the lead up. Our favor absolutelybuzzing for it. And obviously it'll be
one of the biggest facts of theyear next year, so we'll all be
behind you just before we let yougo. How much to think France will
beat England by next next week?Another lucky have will go. That's deep
(25:47):
job. There can I say? It's actually personally attacked me about my mustache
and he smugged. We're gonna haveapart. Jock's appreciate yeah, John,
absolute, absolute gentle man. Wereally appreciate you taking the time to talk
(26:10):
to us as well, and Ihope you have a brilliant Christmas. Will
hopefully catch at some point next year. Why he's gonna get up? I
think I think it can get up, can get up, big douse.
Oh my goodness, so
