We get stuck in moments of being upset, let down, depression, anxiety and in those moments we start to think of our current situation as just how we are or "this is just who I am" and we get used to seeing ourselves that way and forget that may be true now but doesn't have to be true in the future. Visualizing our future can be a powerful way to see another version of ourselves that may be true now but can be true tomorrow. How do you see your future self? What are they telling you about yourself? What is the secret that future version of you holds that you have yet to learn? This meditation hopes to help you get closer to that future self, one breath at a time.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Welcome to mindful meditations with calm the bleep down. I'm
your guide Michael Beckermeire and today we are going to
create our future. Let's get started. As always, we have
a mindfulness quote to help us head into our meditation

(00:34):
with some intent, and today our quote is about intent
from Jack Cornfield and it reads, be mindful of intention.
Intention is the seed that creates our future. We talk

(00:54):
about this a lot here, a purpose and heading into
something with focus and intent. In fact, meditation is about
focus in a way. And it's interesting to me when
I think about people talk about law of attraction and manifestation,
and all of those things require visualization. And visualization is

(01:22):
picturing something that hasn't happened yet, but you can create
some point in your future that represents that moment, happier
self than her self, richer self, married, kids, driving the car,
you want, any whatever it is, it requires visualization. But

(01:43):
that visualization requires intent, and so much of our visualization
kind of gets filtered through our state of mind at
the time. I know, for me, if I'm ever trying
to visualize, I have to push past all the muck
of This feels cheesy, this feels this isn't you know? Yeah,
how am I going to get there? You know? I

(02:05):
have to push past all that night. I assume that
I'm not the only one that has to do that.
It's not just me. I'm not just some negative nancy,
someone of a kind cynic. It just we have to
push past it. I had someone talk me through an
exercise the other day that I really got something out of,

(02:25):
and I thought we'd do it here. What we're going
to do for today's meditation is we're going to visualize ourself,
our future self, where we are content, where we have
what we want, the thing, whatever it is, the numerous things,
whatever it is. And we're going to not attach a

(02:50):
feeling to that because a lot of times in law
of attraction, we attach a feeling. Oh think about how
great grateful I'm going to be in that moment, or
excited or happy, And I'm not invalidating those things at all.
This is just a different exercise. What I want you
to do when you when we're when we get there
is think of that version of yourself, and if you're

(03:12):
think of it as if you're looking at a picture
or maybe watching a video of that future self, and
if you had two or three words to describe that person?
What would it be? And it surprised me in the moment,
what I the words that came to mind to describe myself.

(03:37):
What it did for me was give me a completely
different way into thinking of things that I need to
be concentrating on, certain things that I need to put
more intent into. So we're gonna we're gonna inter into
our meditation and we're gonna do some breathing for a
few seconds, a few moments, and then and then I

(03:58):
want you to picture that thing, that scene in your
mind and imagine your future self having everything that your
current self wants, and then describe that person. And maybe

(04:22):
these can be some words for you heading into the
new year. Maybe these can be just you know how
some people pick a word of the year. My word
of the year is this. Maybe that can be some insight,
give you some insight. But let's get started. So it
to get started meditating. If you've never meditated, or if

(04:44):
you have meditated, the real trick is to find yourself
in a comfortable place, start to lengthen your breath in
and out. You want to slow oh your breath and out,

(05:11):
and you want to imagine yourself getting heavier and heavier
with each exhale, sinking deeper into your place, whether you're
sitting or lying, do a quick body skin and relax
all the hidden tents, places that have been collecting tension

(05:36):
throughout the day. Start at your head and move all
the way down your body. Definitely bring out your wrists
and fingers and ankles and toes, pull a lot of
tension there. Unclench your jaw, relax your eyelids, your cheeks,

(05:58):
and just sit in this quiet calm for a few moments,
following your breath in and out, feeling that breath come

(06:20):
all the way in your body, and following that breath
all the way out your body. Just do that for
a few moments on your own, keep deepening the relaxation

(06:41):
and calm. And if you find your mind has wondered
at any point, this is of course normal. Just recognize
that last thought and come back to your breath. And
just remember, if you've noticed that your mind has wondered,
that means the meditation is working. So take a few

(07:05):
moments and then we'll do the visualizations.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
One must a us.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Must.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Now I want you to imagine a time and place
in the future where you have everything you want, there's
no desire left. You are content and satisfied, and you

(12:10):
have the thing, whatever it is. You've done the thing,
You've accomplished the thing. Spend some time in that scene,
look around, live in it. Where are you, what have
you been doing? Where are you going in that moment?

(12:38):
And just feel what it feels like to be that
future version of yourself for just a moment. And now

(13:15):
that you've got an image, an idea, and you've got
the feeling of what it feels like to be that
future self, I want you to imagine yourself standing in
front of a mirror, that future self looking into their
own reflection. Imagine making eye contact with your future self,

(13:48):
and describe what you see in the mirror. Give yourself
two or three words. You don't have to go into
major detail, just keywords in a way. Spend some time
here thinking about it. What do you see? What do

(14:15):
you feel? What do you recognize about that future self
that you may or may not see in your current self?
Just see what you see. Spend some time here in
this moment really assessing that future self. Must do you

(16:51):
have it? What were the words you would use to
describe your future self with any surprises, anything that you
knew but maybe hadn't admitted yet, anything you for possibly
pretending not to know. Let those thoughts sink in for

(17:15):
a moment, breathing in and out, in and out. Just

(18:48):
remember any time you get discouraged or feel like it's
taking forever, or you're having a setback, just remember that
somewhere out there in the timeline, there's a future version
of yourself that has everything you ever wanted, and there

(19:10):
is no time frame on reaching that goal, just a
picture that you created in your mind. So it is true.

(19:31):
And with that, when you are ready, you can open
your eyes and go about your day, be well, and
have fun, one breath at a time. That's it for

Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life.
