Life doesn't always go to plan. In fact, life rarely seems to go to plan. We can't let those little bumps in the road, or even huge obstacles keep us from moving forward in our life. We need to be able to shift into another gear, change lanes, or take another route. This meditation hopes to help remind us that there is always another way. There is always plan B. One breath at a time.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Welcome to mindful meditations with calm the bleep down. I'm
your guide Michael Beckameier, and today we're going to shift
to Plan B. Let's get started. As always, we have
a mindfulness quote to help us go into our meditation
with some intent and purpose. And today our quote comes
from the Great, the one and only Albert Einstein, and

(00:33):
it reads, we cannot solve our problems with the same
thinking we used and we created them. I'm sure many
of you have heard that quote before. It is one
of my favorite quotes, and it's a very simple quote.
And isn't it true that sometimes the most simple things
are the most profound. And what I like about it

(00:55):
is that things don't happen the way we plan for
and we often get thrown curveballs, and we often get
thrown roadblocks and bumps in the road and forks in
the road, and we just don't know what need to
do until we are there doing it. But also when

(01:16):
the plan does not happen the way we think it
should or the way we thought it would, and we
have to adapt and shift our thinking so that we
can solve the current problem. We have to be able
to pull back with some perspective, take a deep breath,
and when you're insignificant problems, when you're in big life crisis,

(01:43):
those aren't things that you can just go, oh, we'll
do this. Serious serious things like you lose a job
or you're you know, you found out your partner is
cheating on you or is leaving you, And those are
things that you can't just like check off a box.
You have to be in them really to un understand
what it feels like, and then you have to know

(02:03):
what it feels like to know what you think you
should do. It's the hard knocks part of life. It's
not fun. A lot of those things aren't fun. It's
not like, well, I'm so glad such and such happened
and ruined my peace of mind and my existence for
you know that six months or that year or that week.

(02:27):
But how many times have we been through those life
altering situations and realized that we are better because of it.
It sucks still. It was horrible awful timing or horrible
awful thing to happen. You went through it, You hit
that fork in the road, and you took the path
you took and maybe found out later that that wasn't

(02:47):
the right thing, and then you shifted again. We have
to be able to shift or we will always be stuck.
Never been driving down the road and really like as
you took a wrong turn and then just thought to yourself, hey,
I'll just keep going this way. No, you have to
adapt to the mistake you made so that you can

(03:08):
then get back on course. And that's life plan B.
So that's what we're going to meditate on today. As always,
we're going to get ourselves comfortable, start lengthening our breath
in and out, slowing our breathing down to help ourselves
relax into this present moment. Whatever course you've taken in

(03:32):
your day, you have driven yourself to this place, right
here and right now, and this is a pretty good
place to be. No matter no matter how busy or
chaotic or frustrating or stressful the day has been, you
at least made some time to sit down and find

(03:52):
some stillness, and you are taking care of yourself. So
let's get started. You can either sit down or lie
down for this. The most important thing is to make
yourself comfortable so that you can forget where you are
and who you are and how you are for just
a few moments. While you follow your breath, watch the

(04:12):
breath coming in, and watch the breath going out, paying
attention to the sensations and our body as we exhale,
finding ourselves heavier and heavier with each in and out.
Take a moment and scan your body from head to toe,
relaxing all the tense places, maybe that you haven't thought

(04:34):
of as always. I'm surprised at how tense my cheeks
and my jaw are, how much tension I'm holding in
there if I'm not thinking about it, all the way
down shoulders and back, torso, hips, thighs, ca all the

(05:01):
way down to your feet. Take a moment and think
about the space around your body, the air touching your skin,
the seat or cushion you are sitting in or lying

(05:23):
in pushing back up against you. Paying attention to the
sensations that are caused by those things, the space around
your body in doubt, remembering that the more you can

(05:58):
breathe in and the longer you can out, the longer
you make that exhale, the more relaxed you will be,
the heavier you can get into this relaxation. It really
does trigger the relaxation point in your vagus nerve as

(06:18):
you're exhaling, as you're breathing in and breathing out and
breathing out, watching it breath come and go, thinking about

(06:41):
very much like the plan b starting over, breathing in
and breathing out. You notice your mind has wondered. You
recognize it. You'd say, oh, my mind has wondered or
off course, h let's start over breathe then doubts such

(07:07):
as life, such as the plan be continue this practice
on rome for a few moments, and I'll be back
at the end.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
HM must a us instant us one must us in

(17:33):
as music.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
Okay, wherever you are in space and time, it is
time to return back to your body. Let the silence
and stillness and relaxation settle in for just a few
more moments, take a few more cleansing breaths in and out.

(19:16):
And friends say to me once that there's no such
thing as failure until you quit starting over and over
and over again. Is kind of like what we do
every day when we wake up in the morning, just
starting over, trying to keep moving forward. And with that,

(19:38):
when you're.

Speaker 3 (19:38):
Ready, you can open your eyes and go about your day,
be well and have fun.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
That's it for this time on Calm the Bleep Down.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
