(00:25):
about my guest. I'm always excited about my guest, but
today's guest to me is extra special. I had on
Reverend John Lee Hooker Junior back in February to talk
about his powerful and I do mean powerful testimony.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
His book is From the.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Shadow of the Blues, My Story of Music, addiction and
Redemption John Lee Hooker Junior with Julia Simon. If you
didn't hear that show, you need to go back and
hear that show. And that's why you need to subscribe
to Ding with Betsy. Reverend John Hooker Junior is back
today with the beautiful, powerful new song Heaven Rules. But
(01:11):
let me give you some background and Reverend John Lee
Hooker Junior. His famous blues legend dad was John Lee
Hooker and John Lee Hooker Junior is.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Famous in his own right.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
His first album Blues with the Vengeance, was released in
two thousand and four, nominated for a Grammy Award and
won the w C Handy Award for Debut Artists. His
third album, All Odds Against Me, released in two thousand
and eight, also received the Grammy nomination. He is a
Nergains minister and divides his time between the United States
(01:47):
and Germany. And Folks, if you're not familiar with John
Lee Hooker Junior's music, I highly advise you to get
familiar with it. It is so inspiration and all so
powerful and God is blessing. Reverend John Lee Hooker Junior,
and I want to welcome you back to Jennifer Betsy.
(02:09):
Reverend Johnily Hooker Junior, Welcome.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
I want to thank you. Thank you so much, Bessie.
What a blessed it is to be invited back to
your wonderful Thank you so much, Thank.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
You, you are welcome. I could ask you questions that
I always want to ask a musician. Your song Heaven Rules.
I have to tell you, Reverend John, every time I
hear it, I get something different from the song. And
I have played it several times. It's a song you
(02:45):
do not get tired of. Hearing because you get something well,
I do anyway different from it each time. It is
a powerful song. How did you create the song?
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Well, it was created and inspired good, good statement and
inspired by just living living and watching TV, watching the news,
watching everyday live radio, social media. And what I gathered
(03:25):
was a whole lot of narcissism. And I'm not talking
about in general, but I would say ninety of the
world is the orbit of narcissism. And I watched, and
I watched, and I watched, and I just got fed up.
And it reminds me that in the Book of Samuel,
(03:50):
where David is putting on the armor of King Salt
to go out and fight the giant Goliath, and he
is insulted because these people, the Philistines, disrespected God. And
that's the kind of the mind side, that mindset, min
(04:10):
mindset that I have, that God is being instulted. People
have to go a dassage to think that all of
their richest, all of their jewels, all their p diddy
women and Epstein and Weinstein disrespect of human beings.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
And I just wanted to write in defense of the
Almighty God, though he don't need no defense, but I
wanted to write something to the world and let them
know that their jewels, all of their harems of women
or harems of men or whatever they have, all of
their cars and the jumps up and down, and all
(04:52):
of their jewelry and all of their money that they
flash on YouTube and videos and on TV doesn't fine.
Fame and fortune does not define eternal life and power
all power because Jesus said all powels is given onto
me and both heaven and earth. And I want to
(05:14):
stand in defense with the song folks who think that
they are big bad and they are going to live
forever because their kingdom will never fall. And I want
to just in that bess heaven rumors.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Uh. I agree, Amen, I guess some inspired talking to you,
Reverend John that it's true and that song and you know,
the song makes me think. You know, you never see
a U whole followed by a hearse to the grave.
(05:54):
And you said even like in your song something like
even if you could take it with you, it's going
to burn.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Uh, so what not follow you through you?
Speaker 2 (06:04):
That's right, that's right, that's right.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
And you know these people and I agree with you
one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
There is so much love of self in.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
The world now and a me me me attitude and
entitlement and it doesn't matter, you know, like you mentioned
your song, like your money, your mansions, when you stand before.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
God, that's that's nothing. Yeah, that is nothing.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Uh. You have so many references in your song, and
one of them I just love of you, said you
quoted Johnny Cochrane. I believe the gloves that you must
have quit. Yes, you know, standing before the right, the
(06:58):
great white thrown, there's not gonna be any you could
use when you stand in that day of judgments.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
That exactly, well, have you quitted after you've already been
found guilty about the judge of the whole world Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Amen, I have There's so many questions to ask about,
like songwriting or getting the music once you have your song,
because that that's always boggled my mind.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
And I just love the creative process of artists.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
How do you come up with the music, arrangement of
instruments but you would like to use.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yes, ma'am. And that's Sometimes I have a beat, sometimes
I have a quick an arrangement or a thought, and
sometimes I don't. Sometimes I have the background singer in
(08:00):
my mind. Sometimes I have the horn hits in my
mind and then sometimes I don't. And that's where a
break producer comes in. When you know someone that has
God's gift to hear what you are trying to say,
to bring your thought out into fruition, that's when you
(08:24):
that's who you go to. And I went to my
co writer and music arrangement or music arranger, Larry back
Piece from Oakland, California, And that's what I do. If
I can't, if I don't hear nothing, I'll bring an
idea and it is his job to use his gifts
(08:47):
to bring it into fruition. Oh, I know what you're
talking about, and he'll write it and it always is
one of what I thought about or what I wanted.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Uh. That always fascinated me because so many musicians have
different songs and different arrangements and it just I'm.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Really I think it's it's a gift.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
I really believe when someone is musically inclined, it is
a gift from.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
God that they are able to do that.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
And you know, I've you hear musicians say oh you know,
it just comes to me.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
And that's another.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
Another point in your song when you say that you know,
they say it's that they did it. They don't realize
that God gave them the talent. They right, God gave
them their gifts and their maybe even there, I would
say they're riches the life that they have. You know,
(09:52):
the Bible talks about you know, we're like grass, right,
our real life is but a whisper.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Here and gone. I mean, it's and what we do,
I mean, what we do for Christ is all that's
going to matter in this world.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
In this world matter, that's all this is going to matter.
And were liveing in a world where look what I've
done and no credibility, no glory, no recognition. And Jesus
spoke of that that people will say that look what
I've done. And he that receives his own glory, he
(10:32):
that speaks of himself and receives his own glory. And
it's like just like the song says, like death given
a round of applause to rigor mortis no significance none whatsoever.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Hey man.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
That's why Reverend John and I talk about my story
about caregiving. I give God the honor and the praise
because if it wasn't for God giving me the strength
every day, I wouldn't have made it. And I'm grateful
to be sitting up and talking and using my voice
to help people.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
And it is a gift from God, is definitely I know.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
And God recognizes all of all people who gives him
the praise and the glory.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
That's I always say, I give God an honor and
the praise because I really I don't know, Reverend John,
how people get through life and circumstances without God in
their life with I just don't know how they do it,
(11:43):
because you know, I forgot the exact verse. But uh,
in Isaiah, you know God gives a strength as like
wings of eagles.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Awards.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Ye, the Lord shall renew his strength, they shall. That's
wing ed eagles.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Yes, amen, that is I'm a testimony to that because
when you can't think you're gonna go another step? And
how much of your wife influenced this song having rules
because you have quite a story, which we talked about
back in February. I don't care how fast this year
(12:24):
is going. You have such a powerful testimony that I
tell people. I'm just I was just telling someone, a salesperson,
knowing north Strom, I said, have you ever heard of
John Lee? Hooker, I said, well, I talked to his.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Son, Johnley Hooker Junior. Do you know him?
Speaker 1 (12:44):
I said, got to read his book and here is music.
So how much of your life influenced this song?
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Having rules?
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Well, and I just had an interview. I think it
was a couple of days ago, in the same courses.
So that's a great question. Because that book that you mentioned,
from the Shadow of the Blues is a prime example
(13:14):
of falling from grace, falling flat on your face when
you are in direct opposition against God. So the book
and the song reflects not only on the world's life
(13:36):
or the world's lifestyle, but on mine as well. Because
I fail, I fail, I got up. I failed, and
I failed and fel I rejected God and I failed.
And every time I rejected him, I feil. I was
shot twice. I was cutting faith, stabbed in homeless you
(13:58):
name it, overdough the whole nine yards. And that song
is a direct replica of my my rise in my
fall right flat on my face. So it is it is.
And but one thing about it. I recognize that Jesus
(14:22):
Christ was my Lord and my savior and that I
couldn't do nothing without him. So it is it's a
it's a mirror. It's a The book is a mirror,
the mirror, and the song is the mirror of my life.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
That's great. I got to write that down because I
like that. Are you going to be performing the song
and concerts? Do you have like a gospel concert?
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Yes, I will be. You go to John Leehooker junior
dot com. But all of my dates are now in Europe.
I just left. I just left the United States doing
a ministry tour with five four churches and flew to
(15:15):
Alaska to do four prisons. And now I'm back in
Germany to do my ministry and to preaching churches and
to speak to the townspeople. Were here in Floppingberg. So
I am here in Germany now. But at some point
(15:35):
when the Lord opened the door, I certainly will. But
yet answer to your question, I go and I will sing,
and I will tell this story about heaven rules as well.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Amen, A man, Well, I'll tell you what I helped
your song having rules gots nominated, and not only nominated,
I help you win all.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
I know.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
God will bless this song, Reverend John. The Lord has his.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
Hand on you for sure.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
And if people, folks, I have to plug the book
because this book from the Shadow of the Blues, my
story of music, addiction, redemption. Everyone should have this book
in their library. Every clergy person of whatever faith you
are should have it. It is a book of hope, grit, grace,
(16:37):
and just Reverend John Lee Hooker, you are a testimony
for Jesus. You really are. And folks, if you're not
familiar Reverend John Lee Hooker Junior's music, there's a YouTube channel.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
And that's I started listening to the music. And when
you instead of going to have.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Another song coming out a new song, I thought you
have to come back because I would promote anything that
you are doing. Reverend John, you are my new brother
and the Lord and I'm just really I'm I'm honored to.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Be speaking with you.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
How do people purchase your song? It's that's not an album,
it's it's a single song.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Is that correct?
Speaker 3 (17:33):
It's a single, yes, ma'am. They could go to any Spotify, uh, iTunes,
any social media platform download the music. If you would
like a sign copy, of course, you would go to
John Leober Junior dot com and go to my store
(17:54):
and you can also write a little quest. I would
like minds my CD sign and I'll send it to
you from here along with an autograph photo. So I
would hope you get it from doesn't matter. But when
it comes to personal personal things, uh, I would like
(18:19):
to sign it and sists and then send you a
photo with a little note and a card of encouragement
with the scripture written in it. So I hope that
they hear that and go for the latter or go
and downloaded. But yeah, so that's our w w W.
(18:40):
John Lee Hooker Junior, not Hooker senior, but junior dot
com M.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Yes, and and your the song have a rule you
do talk about King Nevakanezzer. Would you like to talk
about that because I really like that, Yes, ma'am.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
It was found in the in the uh uh an
uh Daniel of the fourth chapter, and the story goes
that King never Connectlan, the king of Babylon, was warned
uh in a dream by an angel, and it was
interpreted by the prophet Daniel that if he did not
(19:25):
stop or desist from his sinful pride and look at
me and all of this events I've done by my
own hand, and the scripture warned him. The scripture warns
him that if he didn't desist from his his narcissistic attitude,
that he would be stripped of his kingdom and he
(19:46):
could give be given a mind to that of a peace,
and he would sleep, or not only sleep, but he
would reside with the animals. Doesn't tell you what kind
of animals, but whatever kind of animals, he would be
res eed with him for seven years until he recognized
and acknowledged that only the God of Heaven rules. So
(20:08):
he didn't listen, as though as some people don't listen,
they don't look. Well, it never happened to me. It
never happened to me before. I'm not dead yet, and
Jesus hasn't gotten here yet, so he has the same
attitude at present today. And one day he was on
top of his palace. I'm sure that is still the
(20:30):
robe was dragging him behind him, and he looked down
at the avalon and said, all of this have been
done only by my hand. And at that very second
his kingdom was stripped of him, and he was led
to the beast of field to reside with him. And
(20:51):
at the end of the video that are becoming out
this month, there's a scripture that says, halted before halty,
haughtiness before a fall comes haughtiness. So and he was haughty,
he was narcissistic, and he felt by the wayside until
(21:14):
he looked up one day and said that God, the
God of Heaven, is the ruler of all things. And
then this kingdom was restored.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Coming on, amen, I can't wait to see the video.
And I think of the video because I am a
was curious about this. How long, I guess it depends.
Does it take to do a video? And how do
you pick out the people in your video?
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Well? You and I know it is God who puts
people in your life. So in the video, I was awed.
And gentlemen here in Germany says to me, one day,
you got this new song coming out, let's do a video.
(22:10):
I got it lines and he is a commercial He
writes commercials and promotional videos for Mercedes Benz. So he's
the top of the line expert. And this happened last year,
last year, and here it is. What is this six
(22:32):
almost six seven months later, the video is just about finished.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
That is incredible, folks. I'm gonna say it again. I
have to go on the YouTube channel. It's John Lee
Hooker Junior. Is that the name of your YouTube channel.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Yes, yes, yes, Reverend John Lee.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
J york Man.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
Okay, that's what That's what I thought, Folks, you will
not be disappointed. Matter of fact, you really need to
look at the videos and listen.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
To music and you will be inspired.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
They are with some of the coolest videos I have
ever seen for gospel music. So and inspiring and motivating.
And I just you're so talented, Reverend John Leahuker Junior.
(23:32):
I just, you know, it's like you're you're saying Heaven rules.
Reminds me you're you're preaching. You're talking, and to me,
it's almost like a little bit of rapping. I mean,
it's like everything, you know, it's like everything together.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
Yeah, And I'm laughing because my producer will submit poke
the song into UH to the Gospel genre, and he
will also submit the video to the Grammys. And what
he said but was funny because he said, I can't
(24:12):
wait to see them at the Academy running around from
room to room trying to figure out the category this
song would go into. So you got different categories. You've
got the spoken word, you have the rap, you have
the rap, and then you have the gospel and so
(24:35):
forth and so on. I can't wait to uh find
out what category we would be submitted in as well.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
How did that work?
Speaker 3 (24:45):
I've been told. I've been told that it's sort of like, Uh,
I don't want to I don't want to claim that
I am the first one. But it's it's an unusual
track because, like you said, there's some real rapping. Uh,
it's talking about the gloved arm it will not exist.
(25:10):
And it's got some storytelling. It's got some rapping, it's
got some preaching closing arguments at the end of the video,
what will you say to Jesus when you spend in
front of the Great White Throne within some modelble evidence?
So it's uh, it's it's quite a wonderful piece background
(25:31):
singers horns. Uh, wonderful background singers and the one of
some of the greatest horn players in the world.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
Well, I certainly hope that you do when uh a
grammy for having ruled.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
How does I only do?
Speaker 1 (25:50):
How does that.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Whole system work? H?
Speaker 3 (25:58):
Yeah, it's really a copy dated thing. Maybe not, maybe
it is or maybe it's not. But uh, you submit
your products in July and then in October. Uh, I
believe October is the first round of voting, and December
(26:19):
is the second round of voting, and then February the
winners are announced. Uh, the winners are announced. But yeah,
you're only you have to be an Academy member. Uh
in order to in order to vote, you just can't
(26:40):
vote Uh online, you have to be a member of
the Academy.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
Is it based on sales? Reverend John? I think some
awards are like I know, want to Country Music, the
CNT Awards, they have like fan based awards and run
some of it goes by sales. How does that work
with the Grammy? The vote the academy, just the votes
(27:10):
on the song, Yes, just.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
The Academy, just the Academy members vote and gallied them
up and out of all of the thousands of people
for five people in each category are nominated and of
course the rest of them not and lost south And
(27:33):
at the end of the final burden in December and
the winter is announced in February.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
You were nominated twice for Grammys. Yes, what was that experience?
Like that had to be so phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Well, after being told that you will be back, You're
going back to prison, You'll be back on drugs. This
is only a short lived time and after being these
two thousand and four, well after getting off of off
of drugs and out of uh A drug rehabilitation, escaping
(28:16):
my last prison sentence and being less to go to
the drug program in two thousand and three, uh to
come out in two thousand and four. I remember one
sergeant I think his last name was Wilson, and you'll
be back fork and uh so two thousand and three.
(28:37):
In two thousand and four, after getting out of Saint
Quinn when the last time, and then being nominated all
the following year was surreal to me because it was
like maybe somebody has said might have been myself from
San Quentin to the Red Card. Oh, it was surreal.
I was on my way to Europe after getting off
(29:00):
parole and I was old, I have a friend of
mine with a shaky voice, Ah John, and he was crying,
You've just been nominated for a Grammy and you nominated
for the w C and the Award, And it was
sur real. It was surreal, and then you had it
was all that was luck. And his name is John
(29:22):
Lee Herker Junior. And but what they failed to realize
the academy is it doesn't take fake. They doesn't take it.
They don't take impersonators. It's all a rigerality, authenticity. And
then when I was nominated the second time, coming from
(29:43):
Europe on an air on a plane, and as we
were deporting the plane, uh, you checked your messages and
congratulations in two thousand and eight, You've been nominated for bravery.
So all of the name sayers and the prayer haters,
(30:03):
uh were cut down because, uh, the second time it
is not luck. Neither was the first. So it was
a breathing to after going to sleeping on the streets,
shot to beat up. It's strange from your family, and
to be nominated for Grammy. Then God over made a
(30:26):
way for the best selling books for two weeks in
h Amazon, and hear these new songs and here I
am in Germany. My God, it's a blessing, Betsy. And
then I'm talking to.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
Well.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
I can't wait to see the video, folks. I really
need Oh, thank you.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
I just I love the song it is. I have
to say that's Reverend John and I'm this is my opinion.
I'm not a music critic by any means. I think
it's very original, it's so powerful. It has many messages
in it, and I really encourage the audience to listen
(31:19):
to the song. It's going to be on all platforms.
Is that correct, Reverend.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
John, Yes, ma'am, Yes, ma'am, all platforms correct.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
I don't know much about like music because I'm old school.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Listen to music?
Speaker 1 (31:38):
Can they download like from Spotify or one of those.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
Sins you Spotify? All social media? All social media? Correct?
Speaker 2 (31:54):
I'm old glow rebend. I remember the.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
Days just to go into the store and buy you happy.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Your listeners know how to get it.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
Yes, yes, I highly recommend.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
Buying the CD the song and listening to it when
it comes out on the YouTube channel. Folks that I
really sometimes and that all loss for words because there's
just so much I want to say. But Reverend John
(32:31):
Lee Hooker Junior is real.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
He is a.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Walking, talking, powerful testimony for the Lord Jesus Christ and
just so blessed to talk to you, Reverend John. And
I hope this song. I've prite this song does well.
I would love to see you win a Grammy. Go
on God's hands and you've been blessed with talent.
Speaker 3 (33:00):
Give you a call and say you said it, You
said it?
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Yes, Please let me know, you've been blessed by God.
The hand of God is upon you, that is for sure.
And I've never heard a gospel song like Heaven Rules.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
So to me, in my opinion, folks.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
It is very original and I've been playing it. I
must have played it. I received it recently and I
must have played it over ten times. Even my son.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Josh listened to it. He said, Oh, that's really good. Mom.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
That's that's that's really good. And it's it's for all ages, yes,
and it's so for all ages can relate. And you know,
the Bible said, probably go with before a fall, and
this is just such a me me. You know, time
everyone's out for themselves. I encourage everyone listen to Heaven
(34:02):
Rules by the song. And you definitely want to read
the book From the Side of the Blues, My History
of Music, Addiction and Redemption.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
How do people buy the book? Is on Amazon? Can
they order it from your website? Reverend John?
Speaker 3 (34:20):
Yes. When you go to my website to look for
the book, it just simply directs you to all the distributors, Amazon,
Bonds and Nobles and Little Field and rowing in Littlefield,
