bad I can say about Liberty because this could possibly be.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
A dominant win tomorrow. But I don't think it will be.
You know, I don't think it will be.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
It's gonna be tough for our Atlanta Dream to really
capture a win on the road, but we shall see,
you know, because they play really big games away.

Really think tomorrow may be a tough, tough, tough game,
but I believe Bell Andrew will push it to get
us two at home where we will fight for your life.
And truly that's gonna be a fight. Now, of course,
the Liberty, Look, the Liberty is a killer. They are
some killers and monsters over there. OG's in franchise, right,
(14:55):
they're the OG's in the w And of course so
much success including Eastern Conference titles, the Commissioner Cup trips

Tina Charles. She put up a historic performance for the Dream,
claiming number one on both the WNBA All time rebound.
Speaker 3 (15:35):

Now Charles first claimed the records for most career rebounds
in WA history in the first quarter of that game
against Celeberty, passing Sylvia Fowls with her third rebound of

Speaker 3 (15:51):

He is she in the third, passing Sylvia Fowls again
after recording her twenty first of the season in one

My god, Oh no, she didn't.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
Oh no, she didn't.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Oh oh no, this okay, okay, splet least my estimating
one moment is it's in luck. Listen Don King and
Mike Tyson said, yeah, Mike Tyson.
Speaker 5 (19:07):
Know those suits.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Apparently, you know, Don King says his health is much
better than what Mike Tyson has suggested. After Tyson said
he's knocking on death's door. What yeah, yeah, yeah, So
you know, listen, this was definitely an Smate Jones moment
for me, because, of course, if you don't know who
(19:31):
dun King is, does the Grumble in the Jungle Thrilla
and Millena fights between Muhammad Ali and George Frummant, does
any of that Ringo bell m or maybe perhaps one
hundred million dollar lawsuit Tyson patty Is King contributing that,
you know, Tyson said, done stole millions of do he
(20:00):
us million? Millillions?
Speaker 2 (20:04):
And of course the two settled the suit for fourteen million.
But look, Mike Tyson. He went on that little podcast
over there is called It Is What it Is podcaster
Cameron Mace.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
And he asked, you know them about I guess they
asked about, you know, Mike Tyson's relationship with Don King,
And of course this relationship has been very very much
sort of so torn, none existent, no longer a friendship, partnership, whatever,
(20:41):
is just dead. It's gone nothing and apparently iron Mike
said straight up done isn't doing so well, citing his
aid and health catchers as the reason why there hasn't
been any contact now, early after the legendary Rots had promoted,
(21:02):
released the Satanna via his reps on Saturday, telling Fast
he's recovering and feeling fine and he's got a lot
of love for Mike type now, according to CMC.
Speaker 3 (21:12):
Sports, which is very interesting circus.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Close to Don King, who confirmed Tyson's comment, admitting that
he isn't in the best shape Hope White after needing
a blood transfusion.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
At the hospital. So this is what I have to
say about that.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
You know, I think Mike Tyson could have seen as
far as I've seen it. Look, I'm just seeing from
what I saw on that pocket. You know, I didn't
watch the whole entirety, but I did see where White
Tyson kind of, you know, just answered the question, which
is fair.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
You know, he's not doing so well.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
He's at depth story very well, could be at dip store.
Just think, you know, Don Kean is up there in age.
He's not the early or youngest spring chicken. You know,
if I'm not mistaken, don Key is every bit of
ninety three years a hold, ninety three years young. You know,
(22:05):
he's made history, he's made a lot of money, so
I'm not surprised.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
It could be very well, maybe he's keeping hope alive.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Done King or maybe his people's sports people.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
Didn't want to really talk about what's going on because
perhaps it's of a privacy nerd, you know. And it's
fine too.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
Hey, everyone's allowed to have their own privacy, you know,
especially when it comes to your health and whatnot. But okay,
I don't see anything wrong with it. You know, a
lot of allegations and a lot of people suggesting so,
you know, sort of things like that.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
But listen, this is what I'm going to say about this.
We should have done. King's the best, you know what
I mean.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Seriously, ninety three years old, that is major, major, Can
I say again, ninety three years of age. I didn't
even think he's not all but yeah, ninety three years
of age. And I've always said this before, to make sure,
you know, to treat people kind.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
At the end of the day, life is so short.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
People, it's not that serious, you know, wishing him well,
you know, Unfortunately things happen while you're in a hospital.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Infection stand happen.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
He's of a certain age where his health could very
well be compromised.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
I get it. There was a question that was asked
and Mike Tyson answered that question.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
So I don't see any you know, bit, Oh my gosh,
conspiracy theory going on here. It is what it is.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
Just like that podcast said, what is that about?
Speaker 1 (23:35):
It is what it is. That's what I'm gonna say
to say the title of that podcast. It is what
it is. I'll say it to you.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
It is what it is, and that is my estimate.
Speaker 1 (23:47):

Welcome. Welcome doctor Vandy Gaffney to Chicks in the Sports.
But you know what I want to talk about. What
is the mission of the Thomas J. Blacker Society and
how does it support students in healthcare?
Speaker 5 (25:17):
Absolutely so, the Thomas day Block Society are the healthcare
alumni of Morehouse College. So we're the doctors, dentists, pharmacists,
nurses alumni of more House who pride ourselves in the
ability to help the next generation of minority medical professions,
its particularly minority medical men interesting health professions. And we
do that through several ways through mentorship where we think
(25:41):
we're the only alumni organization college partnership where we allow
formerly allow students who are rising sophomore, juniors and seniors
to shadow practicing physicians, dennis pharmacists, nurses in Metro Atlanta,
and we have had this progres in twenty and teen.
(26:01):
We also do mentorship through Why we Can't Wait Homecoming Breakfast,
which is a free breakfast for high school, undergraduate and
medical students to be able to interact with practicing alumnus
who come home for homecoming back to campus for homecoming.
And that just allows us to be able to put
people at a table until we do it through vertical mentorship,
meaning we have a high school student, a college student,
(26:23):
a medical student, and then a physician in a particular
specialty that all of those individuals at the table are
interested in. So for myself as an ant phesiologists, I'll
be able to talk to them through each of their
unique pathways into anesthesia. But on top of that, you
get the ability to have high school students talk to
college students about their next three to four years, the
(26:46):
same for college students and a medical student and the
medical student talking to the resident and so that allows
for everyone to see their next steps when it comes
to their journey into the help professions. We also provide
financial assistance and test prep for those students at Morehouse
Spellman Clark Atlanta who are ready to take the test
to get into medical school meeting, whether it's the MCAT
(27:09):
or the DATP CAT for pharmacy students GRI for grad students.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Wow, this is just marvelous. Oh my goodness, such an
elite group of students. But you know what Listen explained
the significant scept the Living Legends Gala and it's rolling
supporting the next gen of these medical professionals.
Speaker 5 (27:30):
Yes, absolutely so. The Living Legends Gala is the brainchild
of owner of our alumnus where we wanted to honor
our past but also prepare for the future. So we
honor alumnus of Morehouse College and those in the metro
Atlanta and even the national community in black medicine, dentistry
(27:52):
and health professions who have made you indelible impact on
the lives of so many and so our first year
we had doctor Lewis Waite Sullivan and doctor to David Satcher,
two titans and medicine and general but definitely in the
African American medical community. Doctor Sullivan, former Secretary of Health
Human Services, the black, first black male to serve in
that capacity in a White House administration. And then doctor
(28:15):
David Sacher, the first black male to serve as Surgeon
General and Director of the CDC. Last year we had
doctor Vaalermie Montgomery Rice, the CEO and President of the
Moorhouse School of Medicine, and doctor Benjamin Blackburn, the second
who is a well known prosidantist Morehouse alumnus who has
served in the Atlanta area for over fifty years in
(28:37):
the field of dentistry. This year we have two an
amazing and accomplished individuals. Doctor hald Jordan class of nineteen
fifty eight. Wow, Yes, first black resident ever at Vanderbilt
Medical Center saw a true trail blazer, and his phenomenal
work there allowed him to become the chairman of psychiatry
(28:59):
at Maherry Medical College right down the street from Vanderbilt
for many years, where he was even acting president and
the state of Tennessee has named a rehab center in
his honor, and that rehab center still runs today and
helps those with mental health issues in Middle Tennessee. And
then doctor Willie Underwood the third. Doctor Underwood is a
(29:21):
very accomplished urologist from the upstate New York area Buffalo
area to be exact. He is the immediate past Chair
of the American Medical Association, Chair of the board of
directors the American mask Bad Associal So when it comes
to health policy framing the overall healthcare of the United
States of America, there is no more influential physician group
(29:44):
than the AMA and doctor Underwood has served as chair
of that organization and he's in line to become president
in the next couple of years. So we have two
wonderful honorees and this gala allows us to raise funds
to highlight our programming, our student participants all throughout the
(30:04):
academic year, and just be able to show the impact
and the need for more just, total and inclusiveness from
the Metrolana community, or to increase the number of African
American men and women into healthcare. Since nineteen forty the
number the percentage of black men in medicine has not
(30:26):
changed from two point eight percent, So less than three
percent of our country's doctors are black men.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Oh my goodness, how important do you feel that representation
means to just you as an African American yourself.
Speaker 5 (30:42):
Absolutely, it's because there's so few of us. When I
navigate spaces within healthcare, you are essentially taking the mantle
of being the black male insert physicians, so what have you.
You're constantly watched, but more importantly, you are appreciated by
(31:05):
your patient population. It's always heartwarming to walk into patients,
you know, room or their bedside and there's a kind
of shock or ex you know, surprised to have me
as their black male physician. So often from black men
patients and black women patients, they're just appreciative of my
(31:26):
presence there and they at ease, They feel like ease
when it happens, and that they're going to be taken
care of them by someone from their community who only
just stands their culture and some of the challenges that
they face in healthcare.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
Yes, that is so important, so important. But I do
want to just batrack just a little bit because rumor
has it, Jasmine Guy is going to be the host
of this gala. How is this right?
Speaker 5 (31:54):
Absolutely? You know, to have this guy be a part
of the gala as our misteres of ceremony and just
to promote you know, having her presence there with all
the wonderful things she's been a part of in her
long and illustrious career is amazing. And she has been
a wonderful advocate in terms of increasing the visibility of
our gala. She and I have had a conversation and
(32:15):
she's extremely excited about meeting our students and meeting our
membership and just having the opportunity to interact with everyone
at the gala. So we were looking forward to her
presence and all the wonderful things that come with it
when it comes to her serving as hosts and mistress
of ceremony.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
Now, how can attending and sponsoring this gala make a
difference in the future of health care?
Speaker 5 (32:37):
Absolutely, And so I always say funds are fun about
that is having the ability to be able to change
the trajectory of a student's life by helping them. Financial
assistance is so paramount. We know medical school is extremely costly,
and the OBVIOU student walks out of medical school with
(32:58):
over two hundred thousand dollars in day. And so if
you come with debt from undergrad you can just imagine
how you know much financial burder you may have and
which honestly steers the direction of what students and what
medical students residents decide to do with their career. If
they are unable to you know, they have mount descent debt,
(33:19):
they may decide to work in a field that maybe
pays a little bit more lucratively, but the community that
they potentially could be serving is missing out on having
doctor so and so in their hometown and so having
that ability to be able to help them with test prep,
funding applications for medical and general school, having them be
(33:40):
able to shadow, and have money for resources for interviews.
All those things go a very long way in making
sure that students are the most competitive applets they can
be and also putting them in a position that they're
making choices and choosing what is truly in their heart
and not what is financially viable at the time.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
This is going to be a magnificent gala, And you
know what, I want you to tell us what can
guess expect from this gala this year and how can
they get involved in just supporting your mission beyond the event.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
So the prescription for this gala is to come and
have fun, to eat, drink, dying, dance, donate, and just
be a part of what we have going as a
Timesay Black Society. It's we have a black violinist as
our featured musical entertainer and as well as flout as
(34:36):
John Connor who's worked with hundred three thousand and others
in the Metro Atlanta area. We will have our honorees
will be able to speak when as a moderator with
a moderator to just kind of get more about their lives.
And then the food and the ambiance at Lowe's Atlanta
Hotel is just going to be amazing, and so we
(34:58):
do also and also have a live and silent auction.
The live auction features pieces from African American and minority
artists from Metro Atlanta, but also crowds the country. It's
always been a big draw for us where people get
to leave with you know, fantastic, you know, authentic piece
of art from an up and coming artist or an
(35:21):
established artist well known to the community. How can involved?

I support the Falcons from a long distance, you know,
you know, peripheral. I did go to the Falcons Steelers
game and they broke all of our hearts a couple
of weeks ago. But you know, uh, you know, I
don't mind rooting for the Falcons unless they're playing my Niners.
