Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello, and welcome to res Senner's Story. Hour as a
Reminder is a reading service intended for people who are
blind from other disabilities that make it difficult to read
printed material. Today, we will continue with the book last
time on the character Barcas. Your reader today is Diane.

(00:24):
The story that we will continue with is Barkas the
Most Fun and it was published by Chronicle Books. It
has a copyright year of twenty twenty one and the
author's Patricia nick Laughlin. And then, when it is dark,

(00:44):
we'll do what your grandfather just always did on stormy nights,
says my mother. What I ask He told stories, says mother,
stories about when he was young. I'm young now, I say,
I don't have any stories. We'll make up a story
after dinner, says my mother. What will we call it?
A winter's tale? Says my father. The story will be

(01:07):
about us, I say, And Barcus and baby, of course,
says my mother. We have dinner. Baby eats her own food.
Barcus eats his food and three homemade biscuits, hiding another
one in a sleeping bag for later. Outside, the wind
blows small branches against the roof. My mother brings out
some quilts. My father makes hot cocoa. It is time

(01:31):
for the story. A winter's tale begins. My father Barcus
thumps his tale against the floor. Not that tale, says
my father. Once on a stormy night, a family cuddled
in front of a roaring fire, says my father. Woof,
Barcus knows he is family. I say, and baby too.

(01:53):
Baby came to them on fairy weans, says my mother.
That's not true. I say, it's a story, Nikki. Anything
can be true in the story, says my mother. The
dog Barcus was a master fire builder, says my father.
He kept the family warm. Woof the cat Baby had
brought her pen and paper. She was writing a poem

(02:16):
about winter. I say, what was the poem, asked my mother.
I think, for a moment, winter cone, a sparkling white,
blowing wind all through the night. Baby wrote that, asked
my father. She is a published poet. I say, and
it's a story. Anything can be true. Family slept all

(02:36):
through the night, except Barcus, who tended the fire. I yawn.
My mother blows out the oil lamp and pulls her
sleeping bag around her. Barkus yawns, his squeaky dog yawn?
How does the story in I asked, yawning to the
family lived happily after after, says my father, as expected, woof,

(02:59):
Barcus's wolf is soft and sleepy. My eyes closed, as expected,
I say our next. Such stories are about different careers
that one can be when they grow up, and the
first one is called I Want to Be a Teacher,
and it was published by Harper an imprint of Harper

(03:19):
Collins Publishers has a copyright Your twenty twenty one and
the author is Laura Driscool. My sister Stella is learning
to talk. I'm teaching her some words. Can you say Mama,
I ask her. Mama, says Stella. Can you say Dad, Dad?

(03:40):
I ask Stella Dad Dad. Stella says Dad smiles. You
are a good teacher. Dad says to me. I have
taught Sella to Stella to say bye bye. I have
taught Stella to say no. She can even say our
sister's name, Lucy. Oh see Sys Stella. I point to myself.

(04:04):
Can you say Noah? I asked, Stella stuffed cereal into
her mouth. I try again, no Ah, Noah, I say,
Stella's done talking. I want Stella to learn my name.
We will try again later. I tell her it is
time for me to go see my own teachers. I

(04:25):
know a lot of teachers. Miss Finch is my school teacher.
In our classroom, Miss Finch teaches us to read new words.
Miss Finch teaches us about important important people. Miss Finch
teaches us how to be a good friend. Some days
I go down the hall to Miss Boy's room. She
is my speech teacher. I repeat after Miss Boyd the

(04:49):
rabbit is out in the rain. I say, my r
sounds are getting better. On other days, our class goes
to the art room. Mister Case is teaching us to
about the color whill did you know that red and yellow?
Meg's orange? Our gym teacher, Miss Finn shows us how
to play blob tag at recess. It is so tiring

(05:12):
and so fun. You have to use teamwork for this game,
Miss Finn tells us. At home, I get a snack.
My sister is at the table with her math tutor.
Gin Jin knows lots of cool tricks for adding big numbers.
In the living room, Mom is having her tuba lesson.
Her tuba teacher comes once a week. How do I sound,

(05:34):
mom asks? I give Mom a thumbs up. She is
not perfect, but she is way better than when she started.
After dinner, Dad takes me to my swim lesson. My
swim teacher Tim teaches me ARMStrokes and bubble blowing. At
the end of the lesson, I swim across the whole pool.
I knew you could do it, Tim says. The next

(05:57):
day is Saturday. Mom takes Stella, Lucy, Rocket and me
to meet another teacher. Dan is a dog trainer, a
teacher for Rocket. I say, Dan nods and ads, I
will also teach you how to teach Rocket. One thing
Dan teaches us is not to let Rocket to eat
off the table here that Stella, I say, you have

(06:21):
to say no Rocket, No, says Stella. She shakes her
head and Stella Granson points at me. No. Stella says,
ah no, Noah, Stella can say my name. You did it, Stella,
I say, I'm so proud of her. It feels good

(06:41):
to be a teacher. Our next story is titled I
Want to Be a Police Officer, and it was published
by Harper. An imprint of Harper Collins Publishers has a
copyright of twenty eighteen and the author of our book
is Laura Driscool. I am learning all about bike safety.
If Sir Green checks my helmet, looks good, Eva, she says,

(07:04):
snug around your head. That stratt fits well. You are
ready to ride. Officer Green is in the bike tent
at Town Safety Day. She already put more air in
my tires. She put a bell on my handlebars. She
tested my brakes. I know Officer Green from school. Officer
Green is at school when we have fire drills. I've

(07:25):
seen Officer Green all around town. She makes me feel safe.
When I grow up, I want to be just like her.
I see lots of police officers at Town Safety Day.
One of them has a dog. I'm Officer Bell, he says,
this is Gus. Officer Bell and Gus are in the
Cane nine Unit. Gus is a search and rescue dog.

(07:48):
Gus uses his sense of smell to fine missing people,
says Officer Bell. I love animals. Offerer Bell is so
lucky he gets to be a police officer with a
dog partner. Another police officer is making ID cards for kids.
She takes my photo and my fingerprints. She tells me
it will be handy for your parents to have this

(08:10):
ID card in an emergency. The officer's name is Detective Win,
a detective. I say, do you solve mysteries? Sort of?
Detective Wind says, when a crime takes place, I try
to find out what happened. I make a lot of
phone calls. I talk to a lot of people. I
ask a lot of questions. I'm good asking questions. Maybe

(08:34):
I should be a detective. Trooper Jones is talking to
kids about car safety. He lets us sit in his
police car. Trooper Jones is a state trooper. His job
is to keep rods and highways safe. I always wear
my seatbelt. He says. It's a law that keeps us
all safer. I make sure drivers follow all the rules

(08:57):
of the road. I am pretty good remembering rules. I
would probably be a good state trooper. Officer Perez hands
out flowers about wilderness safety. He is the game warden.
Is that like a police officer for the woods? I ask, yes,
says Officer Perez. I love working in the great outdoors.

(09:19):
On the way home, I see police officers in the
parking lot. They keep the traffic moving slowly but safely.
One officer stops the cars so I can walk my
bike across the road. It is Officer Green. Did you
have fun at Town Safety Day? Officer Green asked me yes.
I say, I did not know there were so many

(09:40):
ways to be a police officer. Police officers work hard
to make every day a safe day. Our next book
is titled I Went to Be a Scientist, and it
was published by Harper in imprint of Harper Collins Publishers
as a copyright eear of twenty twenty four. The author
is Laura DRIs. We set sol today on a ship

(10:03):
headed for the North po My mom is in charge
of a team of scientists. They record well songs, they
take photos of their flukes. These scientists are marine biologists.
Marine biologists study animals that live in the water. Like
all scientists, they watch, listen, and collect facts. They test

(10:23):
ideas to see if they are right. Some scientists try
to find the cause of a problem. Some of them
try to solve problems. All scientists want to learn more
about our world. There are lots of scientists on our ship.
Each one has something to study while we are at sea,
and I get to help. Eve studies water. She is

(10:45):
a hydrologist. I am testing how clean the ocean water is.
Eve says, I help her get today's water samples back
on the ship. I bring the water to bend. He
puts it under a microscope. I am counting tiny life
forms in the water. Then says he is a microbiologist.

(11:05):
I help Rosa with her underwater scanner is on the
underside of the boat. We control it from a computer.
I am making a map of the seafloor. Roses says.
Rosa is a geologist. She studies the earth and how
it changes up on deck, Jim wants to know what
the sea floor is made of. Jim studies earthquakes, why

(11:28):
and where they happen. Jim is a seismiologist. Many strong
earthquakes take place underwater. Jim says. Em is at the
weather station on the bridge. I help record the air
and water temperature. Emma is studying ice near the North Pole.
Some ice is melting. Emma wants to know how fast.
She is a climate scientist. We go with Tye and

(11:52):
Lena into the ice. Ty studies the weather. He is
a meteorologist. Lena studies polar bears. She is a zoologist.
Nat has come along to look into space. The sky
at sea is so clear. He lets us look through
his telescope he is filming a meteor shower. Nat is

(12:13):
an astronomer. There's so much to find out about the world.
A botanist might ask, what plans do these like this?
An epidemiologist might ask what causes a disease? A physicist
might ask what is the universe made of? Now? That
is a big question. Maybe someday I will try to

(12:34):
answer it. Our next book is called I Want to
Be An Artist, was published by Harper an imprint of
Harper Collins Publishers, has a copyright ear of twenty twenty
four and the author is Laura Driscoll. Papa, I shall
come see my art. My grandpa has come to my
school's art show. I love it. Papa says, it looks

(12:57):
like me. The next week, Papa takes me downtown. We
are going to another art show. It will be fun
for you to meet other artists, Papa says. The paintings
are huge and colorful. Papa knows men. Who is a painter.
She shows me the brushes she uses. I also meet Ned.
He is a sculptor. I create shapes for metal. Ned says,

(13:22):
meaning Ned a real artist. I say, my art does
not look like theirs. You are a real artist too,
says Papa. There are all kinds of artists. Come on,
I'll show you. We take the train to Papa's workspace.
Papa is a hand lettering artist. People hire Papa to
make signs and invitations. Other artists work in the same building.

(13:45):
Papa's friend, Ellie, is a potter. I make bows and
faces from clay. Ellie says. Ben is an illustrator. He's
creating art for a book. Ray is a graphic designer
for a magazine. I lay out the text and art
Rey page Race says. Liz is an animator. I make
many drawings called frames, She says. Liz clicks through the

(14:08):
frames quickly. The dog seems to move. Terr is a photographer.
She's doing a photoshoot on the roof today. My photos
going ass in catalogs. Terra says. On the way home,
we walk through the park. We see a cartoon artist.
We get him to draw us. A woman is selling

(14:29):
her plant drawings. I am a botanical botanical artist, she explains.
Close to home, we walk by a group painting a building.
Want to help. A woman ask us we are working
on my mural. My name is Rosa. I am a muralist.
Rose explains, each person paints a small part. At the

(14:51):
end it will look like this. Rosa shows me your plant.
It reminds me of my art work. We are making
art here on the side of a building. Pop is right,
art and artists are everywhere. Our next book is called
I Want to Be An Engineer, and it was published
by Harper and Imprint of Harper Collins Publishers has a

(15:13):
copyright You're Of twenty twenty one. The author is Laura Driskol.
My big brother Joe. He's going to a new school.
Not just any school, Joe says, an engineering school. I
am not sure what that is, but it looks like
engineering needs lots of Joe's favorite things, space and rockets.

(15:33):
When Joe grows up, he wants to build rockets. It
is called aerospace engineering, Joe says. The principle gives us
a tour. She asked me, maybe someday you will come
here too. I shake my head. I do not like space,
I say, I like robots. I show her my robot dog.
Engineering is not all about space, the principal says. Engineers

(15:58):
are problem solvers. We use science to plan and build things.
There are all kinds of engineers. I am an engineer,
Mom says on the way home. Huh, I thought Mom
was an architect. I am an architectural engineer. Mom says,
I made plans for buildings. They have to look nice,
they have to be buildable, and they can't cost too

(16:20):
much to build. It is a puzzle. The next day,
Mom takes me to work with her. There are many workers.
They are building a building that Mom designed. There are
lots of engineers here. Mom says, we need an engineer.
When we check in at the office, I make sure
the building is built strong and safe. He says, from

(16:41):
the concrete at the bottom to the roof on top.
He is a structural engineer. Down in the basement, workers
put in pipes. Some pipes bring water in, this engineer says,
others carry wastewater out. They run all through the building.
She is a plumbing engineer. Upstairs, workers put in wires
and cables. Some will carry electricity to lights, fire alarms,

(17:05):
and more. The electrical engineer decides where they all go.
Some cables are for phone lines and computers. How many
does this floor need? The network engineer will decide. Outside
an engineer takes notes which way should the solar panels face?
How can the building be more earth friendly? He is

(17:27):
an environmental engineer. Another engineer just got here. He's going
to work on the elevator. This engineer is an expert
on how machines work. He is a mechanical engineer. Want
to meet my helper as the mechanical engineer. My helper
climbs up the elevator. Shift, It drills hosts in the concrete,

(17:49):
and it does it all by itself. It is a robot.
I shout, my mom, says, guests, who designed that robot?
An engineer, I asked? Mom nods a robotic engineer, She says,
just think I could make robots. I want to be
an engineer. Our next set of books are about Tie

(18:12):
Tie's travels. Super Tie is our first book about Tie,
and it was published by Harper and the imprint of
Harper Collins Publishers. It has a copyright eer of twenty
twenty five and Kelly Starline Lyons is the author. Ty

(18:37):
loves superheroes. He watches them on TV. He read books
about them. Tie place with super toys. He loves how
they help. I wish I was a superhero hero. Ty
digs in his claw said, He smiles. Ty puts on
his cape. He puts on his mask. Ty is ready

(18:57):
to save the day. At the store, Tye sees a
man with lots of bags. The man needs help. Ty
woshes like the wind and blows open the door. He
saves the day. On the playground, Tye spots the boy
who is scared. The boy needs help. Tie rockets to
the boy's side. They slide down the mountain. Tie saves

(19:21):
the day. At home, Ty sees mama looking for her keys.
Mama needs help. Ty uses his super sight. He finds
them in a flash. He saves the day. Super Tie
takes a break. He flies planes with his brother Corey.
Ty makes his plane sore. It sails across the yard,

(19:42):
higher and higher. Then uh oh, the plane is stuck.
Ty must save the day. Ty uses his super breath. Nothing.
Ty tries his rocket shoes. The plane is still too
far away the Supersit is no help. Ty sinks to
the ground. He pulls off his mask. I'm not super

(20:03):
at all, what's wrong, Tie, Corey asks. Tye points to
the plane. I can't get it down. Ty says, thy
wife's his eyes. I need a super friend. Corey looks
at the plane. He looks at Ty. Stay right here,
he says. Corey runs inside. A new superhero shows up.

(20:25):
His maskleans his cake flaps like wings. He winks at Ty.
Ty smiles, super Corey, can you help? Corey uses his
super arms. He shakes the giant tree. The plane lands safely.
Tied cheers. Here comes super Tie and super Corey. Being

(20:45):
a superhero is fun, but having a super brother is
even better. Our next book is called Ty's Travels show Time,
and it was published by Harper and Imprint of Harper
Owns Publishers. It has a copyright ear of twenty twenty
four and the author's Kelly starline lions. I'm Tie. I

I pick up a boat. I am a captain. I
sail on the sea. I see a boat in nick spatter.
Time to bake. My teacake smells so good? What else

(21:29):

red drums. That drums set is all alone. It's quiet
in waiting. It wants to be played. What do I do?
I step on stage? It's showtime. The spotlight shines. I
hit the drums, wrap a tap tap, I play fast

(21:51):
and slow. I play hard and soft. I bob my
head to the beat. People groove as I play. Next,
I see it guitar. I strum the strings, throum, a
thrum thrum. I rock to the music. The crowd grooves too.
Look at that piano. I press the keys, plink the plink, plink,

(22:12):
My fingers fly. The piano sings like a bird. I
wish I could play everything at once. I frown and
look around. I see my friend Ari. I see my
friend Jazz. I smile and walk over. Want to make
a band. I race to the drums. Ari grabs the guitar.
Jazz zips to the piano. Wrap a tap, tap, thrum,

(22:36):
a thrum, thrumb, plink, the plink, plink, The spotlight shines.
I feel the magic. Ari and Jazz do too. Our
teacher claps and grins. You started something, she says. I
see friends joining in. One friend strikes the triangle, another
plays the cowbell, two blowhorns. I know what to do

(24:05):
I think about stopping, but I do not give up.
I see the flag waving, I step on with one foot.
I kick off with the other cars roar by me.
I focus on the track, room wobble, wobble. I do
not zip. I do not zoom. Almost Mama says, I
do not give up. Daddy and Corey ride over. You've

(24:29):

Mama gives me a thumbs up. I see the flag waving.
I step on with one foot, I push off with

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
