Hi, this is Stefania. Welcometo the classic children's story podcast, Stories
for a Bedtime, Playtime, anytime. To keep your little ones entertained and
happy, we bring you an internationalcollection of stories. Stories that Teach,
Stories that entertained at more, Let'smove on to the next heart of Uncle

(00:25):
Wiggily's fortune, Uncle Wiggily and Jenny. Now, Uncle Wiggily, said Katy
Kat as she and the old gentlemanRabbit went along the day after he had
been cured by the cat niptee. You must take good care of yourself,
keep in the shade and walk slowly, for I don't want you to get

(00:50):
sick again. And I don't wantto myself, spoke Uncle Wiggily, For
I want to find my fortune.Oh I think you will, and very
soon, said Kitty. I dreamedlast night of a pile of gold and
dumps, and I'm sure you willsoon be rich so that you can come

(01:11):
back home and live with us allagain. Oh where was the pile of
gold of which you dream asked therabbit. Was it at the end of
the rainbow? Because if it was, there is no use to think of
it. I once looked there andfound nothing. Now it wasn't there,

(01:34):
said Kitty, shaking your head.I don't know where it is or where
it was, because I awakened beforemy dream was over. But I'm sure
you will find your fortune. Now, remember to walk slowly and keep in
the shade. So she and UncleWiggily traveled on and on. Once they

(01:57):
came to a big hill which they'dhardly climb, and they didn't know what
new. But they happened to meeta friendly mud turtle who was very strong,
and who had a large rod shell. You don't bad, said the
turtle, and I will turn youup the hill. I go slowly,

(02:23):
but I am very sure you willhave the time to rest yourselves while I
am climbing off. So Uncle Wiggilyand Kitty Kat got on the turtle's back,
and in time he took them upthe hill. Then, after traveling

(02:43):
on a little further, they cameto a broad river. Oh how shall
we ever get across, asked Kitty. Perhaps I can make a boot,
said the rabbit. He was lookingfor some wood and some broad leaves with
which to megas sail, when alongcame swimming a bit goldfish. Just perch

(03:09):
on my back, the fish said, and I will be very glad to
take you across. But two youswim underwater, and we will get all
wet, objected Uncle Wiggily. No, I will swim with my back away

(03:31):
up out of the water, saidthe goldfish, And this he did,
so that the rabbit and the kittykat girl were taken safely over to the
other side of the river, andthey never even so much as wet their
eyelashes. M Perhaps I will findmy fortune over here, spoke Uncle Wiggily,

(03:54):
as he hopped along after thanking thegoldfish. He looked on the ground
end up in the air, butno fortune could he find. There is
a little house made of leaves andbark over there, said Kitty, pointing
through the woods. Let us goand see who it is. Perhaps a

(04:18):
bear lives in there, said therabbit. It is too small for a
bear's home, decided Kitty. Butas they came close to it, they
heard a scratching noise inside, andthey thought perhaps it might be the fuzzy

(04:39):
fox. And then all of asudden they heard a voice singing this song.
I sweep, I sew, Idust, I mend for morning until
night, and then I washed theplaces and cups and scraw up the table
white. I love to make apudding, also a pie and cake.

(05:02):
And when I do my ironing, potatoes do I bake? Now? I
must hurry, hurry to get ameal for you, and then I'll go
and gather a hickory nut or two. Why I know who that is?
Cried Kitty Kat, who asked UncleWiggily, making his nose twinkle like three

(05:24):
stars in a moon on a frostynight? Is Jenny Chipmunk? Cried Kitty,
I just know it is, OhJenny, she called, Is that
you? Yes? Who is itthat wants me? Asked a voice,
and out from the tiny house steppedthe little chipmunk girl. She had on

(05:45):
her sweeping cap and her apron, and in one hand was a cloth and
in the other a plate. Shewas drawing. Well, well, Jenny,
you're as busy as ever I see, exclaimed Uncle Wiggily. Why are
you living here? Hush no,answered Jenny Chipmunk. I don't live here.
But in this house is a dearold lady Squirrel who is so feeble

(06:11):
that she can't get around and doall her work. So every day I
come over and clean up for herand get her meals. Oh, I
just love to work, cried Jenny. I believe you spoke the rabbit.
But can't we help? Of coursewe can, decided, Kitty, you

(06:33):
kiss some wood for the fire.Uncle Wiggily and Jenny and I will do
the housework. Then the rabbit andKitty went into the little house, and
Jenny Chipmunk introduced them to the oldLady Squirrel, who had to lie down
in bed most of the time.Oh, I am very glad to see

(06:55):
you, she said in her gentlevoice. I don't know what I would
do without Jenny. She's such ahelp, aren't you Jenny. But Jenny
wasn't there to answer, for shehad skipped into the kitchen to finish the
dishes, and she was sitting awayas she hurried along, happy as a

(07:15):
grasshopper. Then Uncle Wiggily brought ina lot of wood, and with Kitty
to help with the sweeping and dusting, the house was soon as neat as
neat as a piece of pie ona Sunday morning. Now we must go

(07:36):
out and gather some nuts for theold lady Squirrel, said Jenny. What
will we carry them in? AskedKitty. Oh, there is a basket
for you and Uncle Wiggily can usethis case. And as for me,
said Jenny, I have little pocketsin each side of my cheeks, you

(07:56):
know. And it's really true.A chipmunk has little pouches or pockets,
one on each side of his face. You look the next time you see
one, and notice how a chipmunk'scheeks stick out when it has a lot
of nuts to carry. So thenuts were soon gathered for the old Lady
squirrel, and then Jinny made acup of tea for Uncle Wiggily and Kitty.

(08:20):
And as they sat in the housedrinking it and talking cheerfully to the
old Lady Squirrel, all of asudden the fuzzy old fox came along and
tried to get in, but UncleWiggily saw him through the window and quickly
shut and locked the door. Nevermind, cried the fox, as he

(08:43):
sat down outside and licked his lips. I'll wait then, don't you come
out, mister Robert, and thenI'll get you. Oh what shall we
do? Cried Kitty Cat in greatfright. I'll show you, said Jenny
Chipmunk. So she took the bigdusting brush down off the nail, and

(09:05):
she stuck the brush out of thewindow as she waved it at the fox.
Waved the brush, not the window, you know. And when that
fox saw the fuzzy brush waving,he thought it was the bushy tail of
old dog Bruceifal. And as thefox were so afraid of dogs, that

(09:28):
then and there he gave three separateand distinct howls. Wow. And the
way he ran as fast as hislegs would carry him. And so Uncle
Wiggily and Kitty Kat come out.Boy, but you are a smart little

(09:48):
girl, Jenny Chipmunk, said theold gentleman rabbit. I never would have
thought of that. Then Jenny sangher song again and made a cherry pie
for the abbit, and he andKitty traveled. On the next day,
something else happened. I'll tell youabout it in the next story. Uncle

(10:22):
Wiggily goes burying. Well, thisis a beautiful day, said Kitty Kat
as she and Uncle Wiggily walked alongthrough the woods one morning. Yes,
this weather is very nice, agreedthe old gentleman rabbit. I ought to
find my fortune today. I havebeen traveling for a long time, and

(10:45):
I'm getting quite tired. Kitty Katlooked at him, and she was sorry
to see that Uncle Wiggily appeared quiteold. He was bending over as he
walked, and he had to govery slowly, for his rheumatism was quite
painful, even though he had hiscrutch that Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy it made

(11:07):
for him. Poor road rabbit gotthe kitten girl. I hope that he
finds his fortune soon, or itwill not be of much use to him.
I must look as hard as Ican, So as they went along,
Kitty Kat looked under all the stones, and behind the bushes, and

(11:28):
down in the hollow stumps. Andonce, when she lifted a stone with
her claws, she saw something glitteringunder it. Oh, here is a
diamond, she cried, But itwas only a piece of glass. And
a little later Uncle Wiggily saw somethingshining under a big log. He cried

(11:52):
out, Oh, joy, Ihave found some gold. But it was
only a mining piece of tin. They were both much disappointed, but they
kept on still searching. At lastthey came to a house that was built
just on the edge of a deep, dark, dismal wood, and there

(12:18):
was some smoke coming from the chimneyof his house. I'm going in there
and ask if they know where Ican find my fortune, said Uncle Wiggily.
They are not smoke kitty cout. There may be a wolf or a
fox in there, They are notso. Uncle Wiggily looked carefully on the

(12:41):
ground all about Bulttle house, andthen he said, no, kitty cat,
a wolf or a fox cat livein here, or I could see
the marks of their feet in themud. I think a man or a
woman lives in this house, andI am going to knock on the door.
They will surely be kind to us. So, with the kitty Kat

(13:05):
girl following behind, Uncle Wiggily wentup to the door of the little house
and knocked. Huh, who isthere, asked a quivering, quavering voice.
It is I, Uncle Wiggily, longears, the old gentleman rabbit,
and I am looking for my fortune, he said. Then the door suddenly

(13:31):
opened, and there stood a littleold woman in a green dress. And
she had such a long nose andsuch a long chin as they almost touched,
and if she had been strong enough, she could have cracked a nut
between them. Uh, that's anold witch, cried kitty Kat. Nonsensicalness,

(13:54):
exclaimed Uncle Wiggily, there are nosuch things as witches. Besides,
it isn't polite to call names.Kitty cat, Oh, I'm sorry,
said the kitticat girl, looking ather tail. That's all right, said
the little old lady kindly, andshe smiled when she did this. She
wasn't at all pat looking, butinstead very nice. Lots of people think

(14:20):
I'm a rich, she said, and they won't come near me. But
I'm not. And I love boysand girls and animals. I am so
old, however, that I can'tgo very far from home. And I
would like to go off in thewoods and get some berries to make a
berry pipe, but alas alack,I cannot. But what was it you

(14:45):
wanted, uncle Wiggily. I wantedto know if you could tell me where
to find my fortune, said therabbit. Yes, answered the older lady
in the green dress. I thinkI can tell you where to find your
fortune. If you will travel onfor three days more, you will come

(15:09):
to a little hill. Go upthis hill and down the other side,
and there at the bottom he willfind you a fortune. Oh joy,
cried the gentleman rabbit. How lovely, exclaimed kitty cat. Oh, how
glad I am let's start off atonce, Uncle Wiggily. Nope, not

(15:33):
at once, said the old gentlemanrabbit. First I was to a kindness
to this good old lady. Iheard you say you would like some berries,
went on, So I will goout and get them, and I
will come also, said kitty kat. It is very kind you, spoke

(15:56):
the old lady with a long noseand the pointed chin. So she gave
them a basket in which to putthe berries, and away went Uncle Wiggily
and the kitty Kat girl. Soonthey came to where there were a whole
lot of bushes, and they beganpicking the berries. The basket was almost
full, and the rabbit was wonderingif the lady would give him some of

(16:19):
the berry pie after she made it. When all of a sudden there was
a rustling in the bushes, andout sprang a savage wolf. Ah,
he growled as he showed his sharpteeth. Now I have you both,
Oh what a good meal I willhave. Oh please do not eat us,

(16:45):
taked the rabbit. I am justabout to find my fortune. Can't
you wait till after that? No? Wow, the wolf and he crouched
down ready to spring. Uncle Wiggilyand Kitty Kat were too frightened to move
the bowl around for help. Butall they could see were the very bushes,
and one bush seem better than theothers. In fact, it was

(17:12):
as bread as red ink does thatremind you of something forys and girls.
And as the rabbit looked at thisbush, it seemed to move. Yere,
I come, cried the wolf, and he jumped up into the air.

(17:33):
But as he did so, thevery red bush seemed to leap up
also. And then this bush grabbedthe wolf by his tail, swung him
around and around, and lost himaway up in the top of a tall
tree. There, I'll teach youto play ticks on, Uncle Wiggily,

(17:53):
write a voice. And then thered bush came over to the rabbit,
and instead of being a bush,it was the red monkey, and he
had come along just in time tosave the rabbit and the pussycat. You
see, he looked so much likea berry bush as he crouched down that

(18:15):
the wolf didn't know him, andneither did Uncle Wiggily. WHOA, this
is a joyful surprise, try therabbit. As he and Kitty Kat thanked
the red monkey. I'm glad tosee you once more. Then the wolf
ran howling away through the woods, and the monkey helped the rabbit and the

(18:38):
kitticat girl to fill the basket withberries, and they took them to the
old lady. Were made up highas big as the wash mason the wash
bucket, And the next day therabbit started it off after the golden diamonds.

(19:03):
And we'll have to wait to findout next time does he find that
fortune. You'll have to wait andsee. And that's the end of today's
