(00:27):
Wiggily's Fortune. This is the lastpart. If you remember from the last
story, Uncle Wiggily and Kitty hadrun to a little old lady in a
green dress, who promised that ifUncle Wiggily helped her, she would help
(00:47):
him. And now we begin ourstory Uncle Wiggily's Fortune. The little old
lady in the green dress, whosenose and chin nearly touched, was very
glad to get the berries which UncleWiggily and Kitty Kat gathered. She was
(01:10):
very sorry that the wolf had frightenedthem, but she thought it was just
fine of the red monkey to comealong when he did. And I wish,
I just wish you could have seenhim tossed the wolf over the tree
tops by his tail, said theold gentleman Rabbit. It was as good
as going to the circus. Wellfor doing such a trick, the red
(01:38):
monkey can have two pieces of myberry pie, spoke the old woman in
the green dress, and that redmonkey was very very thankful, and he
ate the two pieces of pie, even down to the last drop of juice.
Of course, the rabbit gentleman andKitty Kat has him pie too.
(02:00):
And after they had eaten their shareand had washed their faces and paws,
they stayed at the house of thelittle old woman all night, for I
want Uncle Wiggily to be nice andrested so he can start off after his
fortune tomorrow, she said. Well, the next morning the rabbit gentleman got
(02:24):
ready to go. The old ladywith their green dress, filled his case
full of good things to eat, including some berry pie, for there were
no more cherries now, you know. Then, with Kitty Kat on one
side of him and the red monkeyon the other, Uncle Wiggily set off.
(02:46):
Remember call the old lady as shesaid, goodbye. You must travel
straight on for three days, andyou needn't stop on the way to look
for your fortune, for you won'tfind it. Just keep on and at
the end of the third day youwill come to a hill. Go up
(03:10):
the hill and down the other side, and you will then come into your
fortune. And I hope you willlive for a good many years to enjoy
it. Woo, thank you somuch, exclaimed the rabbit. It hardly
seems possible that I am going tobe rich after all my travels. What
(03:35):
kind of fortune will it be?Oh, you must wait and see,
said the kind old lady. Well, the rabbit and the kitty icat girl
and the red monkey traveled on andon the first day they came to a
big mountain, and the monkey wantedto climb up it to see if there
(03:59):
were any cook and the trees growingon the top. No, Uncle wiggily
told him, we must keep straighton the lower road until we come to
the hill. And it is agood thing that they didn't climb that mountain,
for on top lived a big giantwho had a big club, and
(04:23):
he might have hit the red monkeywith it. Mind, I'm not saying
for sure, but might have happened, you know. So the three friends
traveled on and on they came towhere there was a big ball of blue
yarn beside a little lake. Itwas a nice soft ball of yarn,
(04:45):
such as kittens play with when Grandmais knitting warm mittens for winter. Oh,
I must stop and play with thatball of yarn, said kitty Kat,
No, said the rabbit. Youmust not do that, For the
old lady said, we were tokeep straight on for three days, not
(05:06):
stopping. And it is a goodthing Katy Kat didn't roll the bar,
for inside of it was a bigrat, and he might have bitten the
little kitten girl mine. I'm notsaying for sure it han't now the third
(05:27):
day, spoke Uncle Wiggily, whenthey cut up one morning, after having
slept in a hollow stump. Bynightfall, we ought to come to the
hill, and on the other sidewill be my fortune. Oh glad I
am. So they kept on andon, stopping for dinner in a nice
shady place, and toward evening theycame to the hill. There it is,
(05:55):
cried the rabbit, as he hurriedup to it. Oh, I
can hardly wait until I get tothe other side. Up he went,
and up went the red monkey, and up went Kitticat. And on the
way the bad fuzzy fox sprang outfrom the bushes and tried to catch them,
but Uncle Wiggily tickled him with hiscrutch and made him sneeze and fall
(06:17):
down the hill. Then they cameto the top of the hill. The
sun was just setting in the clouds, and they were all colored golden and
violet and purple, and oh itwas so beautiful. Uncle Wiggily came to
(06:38):
a stop. And on one sidewas the red monkey, and on the
other was the kitten girl. Therabbit rubbed his eyes, then he took
off his glasses and polished them withhis handkerchief. Then he looked down the
hill. Or why, exclaimed UncleWiggily, there must be some mistake.
(07:04):
I don't see any gold or diamonds. And this place, why, it's
the very place I started away fromso many weeks ago. There is where
I live. There is where Sammyand Susie Littletail live. That's the tree
house where Johnnie and Billy Bushytail live. And and there is the pond where
(07:28):
Alice and Lulu and Jimmie Wibblewobble theducks live. This is home. They
can't be a fortune here. Oh, how disappointed he felt. The sun
sank lower behind the clouds and madethem more golden and green and purple.
(07:50):
Then out from their homes ran therabbit children and the squirrel brothers, and
the duck children, and Pete andJackie bow Wow and Bully the frog,
his brother, and Dutty and MuncheyTrot and Buddy and bright eyed Pig and
all the others. Oh, hereis Uncle Wiggily. Our Uncle Wiggily has
(08:15):
come back, they cried, leapinga button. Joy. Oh, how
glad we are to see you.Happy, happy, welcome. You are
rich, Uncle Wiggily, Rich, very rich, rich, said the rabbit,
rubbing his eyes and trying to standup, while all his friends gathered
around him. But I don't understand, the little old lady in the green
(08:41):
dress said, I would find myfortune here, but I don't see it.
Let me explain, said Sammy, littletail. Do you see that field
of cabbage, uncle Wiggily, andthe rabbit boy pointed to it. Yes,
said the rabbit. I see thefield. There are seventeen million,
(09:09):
two hundred and fifty six thousand, nine hundred and three cabbages there, said
Sammy, and they are all yours. And do you see the field of
turners, Yes, said Uncle Wiggily, as he looked down the hill.
(09:30):
I see them. There are nineteenmillion, four hundred and thirty three thousand,
eight hundred and sixty six tellenops, said Sammy, and they are all
yours, and and do you seethat field, that field of garrets.
(09:54):
I do, said Uncle Wiggily, but he couldn't see so very far as
tears of joy were in his eyes. There are one hundred million, eight
hundred and twenty three thousand, ninehundred and ninety nine and a half carrots
in that field, said Sammy.Jelly long Tail. The mouse had half
(10:18):
the carrot because she was ill,but all the rest are yours. And
you are the richest rabbit in theworld, the very richest parish your fortune.
You can sell the turnips and carrotsand carriages and have forty eleven barrels
(10:41):
of gold. But I don't understand, said Uncle Wiggily, as he tried
to hug all his friends at once. It was this way, said Sammy.
When you were gone, we allplanted things in your garden and feet
else for you, and we tookcare of them, howing and watering them
(11:05):
until they grew, as never carrotsor turnips or cabbages grew before. So
now you have come back to us, and you are rich. And it
was true. After traveling almost aroundthe earth in search of misfortune, Uncle
(11:31):
Wiggily came back to find it rightat home. That's the way it often
happens in this world. Well, you can imagine how surprised he was.
He hugged and kissed all his friends. And then he went into his old
house with Sammy and Susie Littletail. And when he had sold the cabbages and
(11:54):
carrots and turnips for many barrels ofgold, there he lived for many,
many years, as happy as anold gentleman rabbit as you could find in
a day's journey. And though hisrheumatism mothered him at times, it couldn't
be helped. And he gave allhis friends as much money as they wanted,
(12:18):
and they all had good times togetherand lots of fun. And every
once in a while Uncle Wiggily wouldtreat everybody to strawberry ice cream cones with
cabbage or turnip sauce on. Sonow I have come to the end of
this book, but I still havemore stories about the old gentleman rabbit in
