Hi, this is Stefania. Welcometo the classic children's story podcast, Stories
for Bedtime, play Time, anytime. To keep your little ones entertained
and happy. We bring an internationalcollection of stories. Stories that teach,
Stories that entertain, and more. This is the story of Uncle Wiggily and

(00:25):
the Lazy Duck, the old RabbitGentleman and Lulu and Alice and Jimmy Wibblewobble.
The ducks went for a little ridein the automobile. For it was
Saturday, you see, and therewas no school. So they went along
quite a distance over the hills andthrough the woods and fields, for Uncle
Wiggily's auto was a sort of fairymachine and could go almost anywhere. Pretty

(00:50):
soon they came to a little housebeside the road, and in the front
yard was a nice pump where youcould get a drink of water. Oh
I'm are you thirsty, said UncleWiggily to Jimmy. I wonder if we
could get a drink here. Ohyes, said Lulu, as she looked
to see if her hair ribbon wason straight. A duck family lives here,

(01:14):
and they will give you all thewater you want right out of that.
Before Uncle Wiggily could get out ofthe auto to pump some water.
There came waddling out of the duckhouse a duck boy about as big as
Jimmy. How do you do,said Uncle Wiggily politely to this dug boy.
May we get a drink of water? Here? Oh? Um uh

(01:40):
oh, I guess, said theduck boy slowly, as he stretched out
his wings and stretched out his legs, And then he sat down on a
bench in the front yard and nearlywent to sleep. Why, I wonder
what is the matter with him, asked Uncle Wiggily. What is he ex

(02:02):
so strangely and speaks so slow?I can tell you, exclaimed Lulu,
and she got down out of theauto and picked up a stone. That
duck boy is lazy, That's what'sthe matter with him. He never even
wants to play. Why at schoolhe hardly ever even knows his lessons.

(02:27):
Ooh, you surprise me, saidthe old gentleman Rabbit, A lazy duck
boy. I've never heard of sucha thing. Pray, what is his
name? Is? Fizzy? Whizzy? Said Jimmy, who also knew the
boy. Why what a strange name, exclaimed the rabbit gentleman. Why do

(02:47):
they call him that because he isso fond of fizzy izzy soda water,
said Alice, Oh, let's goalong Uncle Wiggily. No, said the
rabbit gentleman slowly. If this isa lazy duck boy, he should be
cured. Laziness is worse than themeasles are whooping off, I think,

(03:10):
and as I am very thirsty Iwant a drink. Then I will think
of some plan to cure this boyduck of being lazy. So Uncle Wiggily
went close up to the boy duckand called out a loud right in his
ear so as to waken him. Will you please get me a cup so

(03:32):
I may get a drink of water? Eh, what's that you said,
asked the lazy boy duck, slowly, stretching out his wings. Uncle Wiggily
told him over again, But thatlazy chap just stretched his legs this time

(03:53):
and said, oh, I amtoo tired to get you a cup,
you ad benner, Oh, andthe house and get it for yourself.

(04:19):
And then he was going to sleepagain, But all of a sudden his
mother, who worked very hard atwashing and ironing, came out the door
and said, oh, dear,if fizzy wizzy hasn't gone to sleep again.
Wake up at once, Fizzy, and get me some wood for the
fire. Quick. Oh ma,I am too tired, said Fizzy.

(04:40):
Wizzy, I will do it tomorrow, oh oooh soon, And he was
asleep once more. Oh I neversaw such a lazy boy in all my
life, exclaimed the duck's mother,And she was very much ashamed of him.
I don't know what do. Doyou want me to make him better,

(05:02):
asked Uncle Wiggily. Indeed I do, but I'm afraid you can't.
She said. Yes I can, said Uncle Wiggily. I'll come back here
this evening and i'll cure him.First, let me get a drink of
water, and then I'll think ofa way to do it. So the
duck lady herself brought out a cupso Uncle Wiggily and Lulu and Alis and

(05:27):
Jimmy could get a drink from thepub, and all the while the lazy
chap slept on. How are yougoing to cure him, uncle Wiggily,
asked Jimmy when they were riding alongin the auto. Once more, I
will show you, said the oldgentleman Rabbit. And you children must help
me, for to be lazy isa dreadful thing. Well, that night,

(05:53):
after dark, Uncle Wiggily took alantern and some matches, and some
rubber balls, and some beans andsomething else done up in the package,
and he put all these things inhis otto. Then he and the Wibblewobble
children got in and they went tothe house of the lazy boy. Duck

(06:15):
is he in, asked Uncle Wiggilyof the boy's mamma. Yes, she
said in a whisper. Well, when I throw a pebble against the kitchen,
mun do tell him to come outand see who's here, went on
the rabbit gentleman. And then heopened the package, and in it were

(06:36):
four false faces, one of afox, one of a wolf, one
of a bear, and one ofan alligator. And Uncle Wiggily put on
the alligator false face and gave thebear one to Jimmy, the fox went
to Alice, and the wolf oneto Lulu. Then he gave Jimmy a

(07:01):
handful of beans, and he gaveAlice a rubber ball filled with water to
Squirt and Lulu the thing they knewwhat to do with them. Then Uncle
Wiggily built a fire and made somestones quite warm, not warm enough to
burn one, but just warm enough. These stones he put in front of

(07:26):
the lazy duck boy's house, andthen he threw a pebble against the window.
Go and see who is there, said the duck boy's mamma to him.
Oy, don't, won't proove, the lazy chap was just saying.
But he suddenly became very curious andthought he would just take a peep out.

(07:48):
And no sooner had he opened thedoor and stepped on the warm stones
than he began to run down theyard, for he was afraid if he
stood still he would be burned. And then as he ran up popped Uncle
Wiggily from behind the bushes, lookinglike an alligator with a false face on.
Oh oh, cried the lazy boy, and he ran faster than ever.

(08:13):
Then up jumped Jimmy, looking likea bear with a false face on,
and up jumped Lulu looking like awolf, and Alice looking like a
fox. Oh oh, cried thelazy boy, and he ran faster than
ever before in his life. ThenAlice and Lulu squirted water at him from

(08:33):
their rubber balls. Oh it's raining, it's raining, cried the boy duck,
and he ran faster than ever, then Jimmy threw the beans at him,
and they rattled all over. Ohit's snowing Inhaling, cried the lazy
boy, and he ran faster thanever, and then Uncle Wiggily threw some

(08:58):
hickory nuts at him. That lazyduck ran still faster than he had ever
run in his life before, andran back in the house. Oh,
mother, he cried, I've hada terrible time, and he spoke very
fast. I'll never be lazy again. I'm glad of it, she said.
I guess Uncle Wiggily cured you.And so the old gentleman Rabbit had

(09:24):
for the duck boy was always readyto work. After that, then Lulu
and Alison Jimmy went home in theauto and went to bed. And that's
where you must go soon. That'sthe end of our story for to day.
But next time I'll tell you aboutUncle Wiggily helping Jimmy. Not this

(09:46):
time, but next time. Andthat's the end of to Day's story.
