Your mom likes us, Lux Presents Hollywood.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
The Lux Radio Theater.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Brings you Jimmy Stewart and Joan Blondell in Destry Rides Again,
Ladies and gentlemen, Tonight, we're happy to announce as regular
producer of the Lux Radio Theater the appointment of mister
William Keeley, who has been our guest producer several times
(00:43):
and weeks past. Prior to three years of active service
as colonel in the Army Air Corps. Mister Keeley directed
such screen hits as The Fighting sixty ninth Each, Dawn
I Die, George Washington Slept Here, The Man Who Came
to Dinner, and the score of other stage and screen successes.
Happy to add his talent, experience and producing skill to
(01:04):
our regular Monday evening broadcasts. Mister William Keeley.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen, and I'd like to
say first how happy I am to be able to
be with you in this theater every Monday night. It
so happens that this week is the twenty fifth anniversary
of radio, and celebrating that event, we welcome back to
the airways.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
And to the lux Radio Theater.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
A gentleman we've missed for almost five years Jimmy Stewart.
He appears in one of his favorite roles as the
soft spoken, gentlemanly guardian of the law in Universal's Western
melodrama Destry Rise again co starred with Jimmy, is another
favorite of this theater, Joan Blondelle, for whom I've always
(01:54):
felt a warm regard since Joan acted in the very
first play that I produced on Broadway. Now, our story
to Night takes us to the early West, those halcy
and boomed down hears, when life was lived from day
to day and gold slipped easily through the fingers, when
a fine tooth comb costs seven dollars and a sewing
(02:15):
needle twice that much, while a cake of soap, if
you could get it.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Was worth its weight in gold dust.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
So if the bells of the early West were proud
of their complexions, it's a credit to the laws of chance.
Now a days, I'm sure that Western beauties by the thousands,
like so many lovely women everywhere, attribute their smooth complexions
to luck's toilet soap. And if Destri's descendants ever ride again,
(02:43):
I trust it will be to the corner store or
a cake of lucks. The curtain now rises on our
first act, starring Jimmy Stewart as Tom Dstrie and Joan
Blondell as Frenchy, with Leo Cleary as Washed Dimsdale. It
(03:07):
lies on the prairie like a glittering jewel, the tranquil
little town of Bottleneck. Here the honest, god fearing cattleman
tends his lowing herd, and after a day of honest toil,
repairs to Johnny Kent's tavern for a friendly glass of
ginger beer and a round.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Or two of checkers.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Yes, all is peaceful and serene on this typical Bottleneck evening.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Hero old French here, What are you doing in my
dressing room? Seeking sanctuary? That's quite a broad.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
Oh, sudden, ship started? It's none here the shots up?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Score? Oh, I see Clara, Yes name?
Speaker 5 (04:00):
Say where you are?
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Changed? Later? Yes?
Speaker 3 (04:02):
There?
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Did Kent come down with you? Fresher? Uh?
Speaker 5 (04:05):
He's still upstairs doing a little arithmetic.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Arithmetic.
Speaker 6 (04:07):
Yeah, he owns Claggett Ranch.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Now, well, well that gives him a solid strip of
land right across the valley.
Speaker 7 (04:13):
Right straight across, and from now on, every time the
captain drive their herds across the valley.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
It's gonna cost twenty five cents ahead.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Hmmm, sounds reasonable to me. You know, that's what I
like about Johnny Kent. He's not greeting.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
No.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
All he wants is everything.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Well, it's see four hundred thousand steers at twenty five
your brains.
Speaker 6 (04:32):
Out me or can't all figure it out?
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Mmm? I trust he'll also figure out a way of
removing the body of the unfortunate mister Claggett.
Speaker 6 (04:40):
Flagget's not dead, he's only mad.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
What are you talking? Let's shut up and listen.
Speaker 7 (04:44):
They had a poker game up there. Claggert bet everything
he owned, including his ranch. Naturally, he lost, naturally when
he started yelling, was frained.
Speaker 6 (04:50):
They threw him out, and.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Who worshipped the sheriff, Sheriff Watson.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
Claggett went running to Watson.
Speaker 5 (04:55):
Watson accused Kent, and well the boys presented it.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
He's a fine man, sheriff, fine man.
Speaker 5 (05:01):

vision the man. It's gonna be law ordering Bottlenecker, and

are darn fool things? To jump out down here? You
(10:40):

What you're saying reminds me of a friend of mine.
And he woke up in the middle of the night
and he saw a great big hand coming at him,
a hand, yeah yeah, So he got out his gun
and he aimed, and he shot a hole right through
his own foot. No, yes he did. Now he shouldn't
(11:01):

see you, Come.
Speaker 6 (11:43):

Speaker 2 (11:44):
To the new rite. I think you and me ought
to have an understanding right off. Oh god, I'm all

you that I've got a hobby. You have mine's carbon
and napkin range. What's your hobby? Collecting guns? Deputy Sheriff's
guns whenever I meet, when I ask him for his guns,
I asked him real nice, uh huh. Well, I'm afraid
(12:06):
this here is one time. You're gonna be disappointed. You
mean I have to take him from you if you can.
I hold on, hold on now, hold on, don't get excited.
I'm just trying to tell you I ain't got any gun. See.
Just what kind of a deputy are you?
Speaker 6 (12:21):
Now?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
If I had had a gun on me, I uh,
one of us might have got hurt, and it might
have been me. And uh I wouldn't have liked that,
would I look at me?
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Fellasanna canary?
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Tweet tweet? Goodness? Where's my paris? If anybody starts picking
on him, it's a death beet. Just you'll come to uncle.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Let's here at our office? I want yeah? Yeah, this shit?
Oh Tom, Tom? What's the matter? Tom? Gusty's boy that
laughed at stock of the town looks bad? I told
Lily Bell, you won't be needing that room after you're
leaving on the next stage, coach, But I sort of
like it here, Warren, How are you gonna face anybody
after what you took from Kent and from Finchy or
(13:29):
what do you expect me to do? I expected you
to be like your par to roar in blasting behind
your shooting irons. What happened didn't have any Why? Well?
I don't believe in them. Say watch open that bag there?
Huh go on, go on, open it? You'll find two
guns in there?
Speaker 6 (13:47):
You mean you? Tom?
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Wait here?
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Step morning boy on?
Speaker 1 (13:52):
Ah?
Speaker 2 (13:53):
My par had these ar wars to day. He got
shot in the back. That didn't seem to do him
much good, did they? That's one reason why I don't
believe what in tynation do you believe in law and
order without guns? Without them? Well? If that don't beat
aggy at oh Tom, don't you see? The only reason
they made me sare is to have somebody they could
kick around. I was eiming to fool him to do
(14:15):
things right. That's why I sent for you instead you
fool me. How you will fool them was we'll fool
them together. Now, don't you see? When you shoot it
out with them, some somehow or other, they get to
look like heroes. But if you put them behind bars,
then they look little and cheap, the way they ought
to look. And it serves a warner to the rest
of 'em. Oh, go on home, town, and I'll get
(14:38):
back to being the town drunk. So I'm good for No,
you're not going back to being the town drunk. And
I'm gonna stay here and do this job. Or come
for Papa did it the old way. I'm gonna do
it a new way. If I don't prove to you
I'm right, I'll get out of town quick enough. But
first you gotta give me a chance. Oh, you gotta
give me a chance. No, no, come on, now, come on,
swear me in here. Oh all right, raise your right hand, you,
(15:00):
Thomas Jefferson, Dusty square that pole of the law? Do
you do it? And everything else that goes with it?
Help I do all right? And here here's a badge.
Just don't let anybody see you wearing it. No guns
where you're going. I'm taking the walk. I'll probably get drunk.
I think I'll go along with you. You just get
into trouble. Tom, I'm warning here, but let's hear of
(15:22):
the main street. Yeah. Nice hidewrest over there. Yeah, yeah,
get some mightifying boy knives and stuff boy knives an
elegant weapon. Was no, no, no, no. I was afraid
you wouldn't be interested. Tom. Look here you're seeing his
hitting poles soaked through and through the blood of Sawtooth McGee.
(15:43):
He objected to a petticoat in his neighbor's wife was wearing.
They fit to a drawer. Both buried in the same grave.
Saw Tooth on the petticoat, saw Tooth in the neighbor
also four innocent bystanders. You got to listen to reason, Tom,
but get out of town. You know. I had a
friend once used to like postage stamps, and he always said,
the one good thing about a postage stamp that always
(16:05):
sticks to one thing till it gets there. Well, I'm
a sort of like that. Hey Wash, wait a minute,
I've been looking all over for you, and what.

my horse here, creeping.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
Dog gee, he didn't mean nothing by it. Don't start no.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Trouble, trouble.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Why we just want to see the new deputy dance.
Come on destree day, I said down and I wait
my hold on now, say uh, buggy, those looked like
pretty good guns you got there. You might have have
to move like guess you can't hurt yourself, son, They
just halting them. It's a nice wait there, yeah, you know,
(17:23):
aside from being pretty ornament, so fella can have a
lot of harmless amusement out of these here toys. I'll
take friendstance them knobs on the top of that sign
down the street there, eh where down the block there
right there, I'll watch them. Don't see him anymore, Yes, sir,
(17:46):
these guns are all right, all right, Tom, Tom. We
ain't see nothing like thatching. Now, the next time any
of you fellers start any of us promiscuous shooting around
the streets, you're gonna land in jail. You understand, But jepany,
we would just right so you understand? Are you hurt?
Come on, Wash? You believe my eyes? And you walking
around here condemning the use of firearms?
Speaker 6 (18:06):
Ah?
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Wash, listen, where did you say Sheriff Watson went to?
I didn't see it. Well, he certainly left your office
on a mess. And those rabbits appears he clean forgot
about the rabbits? What about him? Rabbits is easy to figure.
I know, but there's something wrong. I can't stand. You
don't understand green snakes and pink elephants them. I can't understand.
But you you got to listen to be tom all right, Wash,
(18:29):
go ahead, though I ain't been telling you. You got
to behave like I expect you to behave.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Where's this?
Speaker 2 (18:34):
He's out of town and winter wait him in a
Dutch beeves?
Speaker 5 (18:38):
Why she gotta help? She gotta come to the ranch?
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Now, sure boy, sure wa?
Speaker 5 (18:42):
Say you're Thomas Jefferson destriy ain't you?
Speaker 2 (18:44):
That's right?
Speaker 8 (18:44):

his men have come to take over the Claggett ranch
(20:06):
and they're doing it in the usual Kent manor, but

a perfect legal right to the property. Nothing was sure, dash.

Speaker 6 (22:32):
Please, yes, sir, Miss Pritchet.
Speaker 5 (22:35):

hold on, just come over to apologize. I apologize for
what well, for not realizing who's the real boss.
Speaker 6 (22:51):
Of Bottleneck my coffee Clara.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
Yes, don't let me interfere with your dinner, ma'am.
Speaker 6 (22:57):
It's breakfast, because he gets ah.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
I don't mind if I do join you in a couple.
Speaker 5 (23:03):
So you found out what's good for yourself? Huh?
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Yes, I sort of figured i'd better use a little
common horse, since, of course I could have come barging
in here with all sorts of rumors, like a couple
of rumors I just heard about you.
Speaker 6 (23:15):
I'm supposed to say what rumors?
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Yeah, you're supposed to do that, And if you would
say that way, I'd say that the talk is that
you do more than sing down in Kent saloon sort
of take part in crook a poker games, sheeting folks
out of their ranch. We said that, or just a rumor,
just a room. Of course, you wouldn't have anything to
do with anything like that.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
Yes you call it.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Oh thanks, thanks, I'm better be careful of this too.
I wouldn't wanna have it spilt in the lap.
Speaker 6 (23:41):
Get out, Get out to get out.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
Hold your fire, hold your fire. I'll go just to
put that lamp down there, that's fine. And just one
more thing, you know, Uh, I've seen hundreds like you
all the way from Jacksonville to Sacramento. You all think
easy pickings last forever.
Speaker 6 (24:00):
I don't mind your own business, mister Destrie, you're heading
for trouble.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Trouble.
Speaker 7 (24:04):
I do as I like in this town, and one
who gets in my way is taken care.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Of, like to took care of sheriff.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
It was just like they took care That's just.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
What I thought.
Speaker 7 (24:12):
I don't know what you're talking about. You better keep
your mouth shut and get out of town before it's
too late.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
Oh come on, now, I don't think you're half as
bad as you make out to me.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
Well, never mind what I am.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
But you got kind of a pretty face underneath all
the paint. Look, I'll uh, I'll show you what I'm making.
Take your hand off, sure, sure, all right, but go
Why don't you wipe it off someday and have a
good look. That's a wonderful face. Figure out how you
can live up to it.
Speaker 6 (24:40):
So Larah, Yes, bring me a mirror and a towel. Yeah, ma'am.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
Well that's the most peculiar acting man I ever did see.
But he's got personality.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
M he's sure.
Speaker 6 (25:07):
Worry one bitness Craggett. You can stay here as long
as you want. I sure appreciated Lily Bell still in
all if.
Speaker 8 (25:13):
We could have kept on shooting this afternoon instead of
sending for them now they head the law in.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
Their shy level, I've got something to say about that.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
Oh Jack, Please, it's none of your affairs.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
It is my affair, Janus that Brett Kent's charging me
two bits for every head of cattle going through this valley.
Speaker 6 (25:27):
It's time decent people joined up and got rid of
them cutthroats.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Are you better start in with this watery eyed sheriff
here and that that gun shy lady finger deputy of
his Come on in Destrie I saw.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
You standing there, I wouldn't have said that. Trendall, turn
your back on me, you jack, please, you hurt me, destry.
I ain't paying one cent to move my cattle. And
what do you aim to do? Nothing? That's what I thought.
But I'll do something if I have to take along
my own hand. Nobody's gonna set themselves up above the
law around here, You understand. Listen, I I've got something
(25:58):
to say to you. I think maybe I could uh
illustrate it better if I told his story. I used
to have a friend. Oh, another one, Tom, Yeah, another one.
He was an opera singer, but he went into the
cement business, and one day he fell into the cement.
And now instead of singing in the new opera house
at Saint Louis, he's just part of the cornerstone. He
(26:22):
should have stuck to his trade. You better stick to
your Tom. Await going up to my room? Time to
get ready for supper? Tom, How can you talk of
eating at a time right this? Because I'm hungry? Come on, Well,
there's your room open, listen, there's somebody in there. Eh,
(26:46):
step a step aside. Oh, good evening, good evening. Doubtlessly
you're wondering what I am doing in your room. Well,
you may believe this or not, but I am waiting
for the stage coach. Look, aren't you Lily Bell's husband? Sure, Tom,
that's just Callahan, Callahan, Callahan. I am a stuffle Shane
(27:09):
of barber Chev. Everybody calls him Callahan Tom. Easy to shay. Yeah, well,
I don't mind who you are. But what are your
legs doing on my pants? I find this all very awkward.
Oh he los his pants, regular Tom. They win him
off and him at poker, and Lily Bell locks him
up in his room. Ah, this time, I outsmart Lily Bell.
(27:30):
I climbed through the window across the roof and zuff
I find some pants. Yeah, but they're my pants, So
come on off with them now, I mean now, no, yeah,
well the whole world is against me. I'll wait a minute. Now,
I might be able to make a deal with you.
How well you know this country around here like a
field mouse. There isn't a twee, a tree.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
A booth.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
That's all right, that's good enough, all right. The pants
are yours if you do a little job for me, agreed?
What can I lose? Only a job? Come in, I
want you to find something. Ah, I am a weasel. Oh,
I have the memory of an elephant, the strength salgraation.
He's not asking for zoo, only a bloodhound. We can
(28:12):
keep his mouth shut. I shall be a bloodhound sniffing
and silent. What's missing? The body of sheriff watching? Pardon
me while I give you back your pants? Tom, What
do you want to find? Watching his body? Fair? Because
you can't prove a murder without a corpse. And I've
started to think Callahan make a pretty good second deputy.
A deputy deputy Stu regime ordered me where you will
(28:37):
to Siberia. Come on, man, We're going down to can Salon.
It's me Frenchy.
Speaker 6 (28:47):
Open up, make it snappy, Johnny. I got a song
coming up.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
I know that.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Look, did you have any callers at your house today? Children?
You start acting smile with me and I'll start slapping
you around. Did you didn't you go for instances? Befriend?
Speaker 6 (29:00):
Why not?
Speaker 2 (29:00):
That's better? What was the conversation? All of it? All
of it?
Speaker 7 (29:04):
Well, let me see. I said hello? Uh no, he
said hello, and I said, I don't feel like kidding Frenchy.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
What did he come for?
Speaker 7 (29:12):
Because he's a gentleman. He came to apologize, and that's
all all he had time for. He was in a
hurry to go, just like you are now.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Okay, but if I ever catch you stacking him on me,
I'll personally put out the lights so I don't know
you from anyone else in the game.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
Get my dressed, Clara, Mama. He just ain't got no
person out at all.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Is.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
All right?
Speaker 2 (29:38):
Now? Callahan, stay outside here, right outside the salon, and
follow any of the camp's gang to come off. How
would you tell me what you're up to?
Speaker 6 (29:45):
Tom?
Speaker 2 (29:45):
Well, we can't find the missing party, candle. How the
next best thing is have them find it for it. Please,
let's go home. You do as your toe. Now, wait
a minute, who's that here on the ports of the saloon.
It's Frenchy, pacing up and down on the corn. Well,
here go you were call We'll wait an.
Speaker 7 (30:02):
It's got a match, Deputy.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Oh oh, I'm sure, thanks. Oh you've been arguing with
somebody again. Huh what'd you know? Well? I read a
book once. It said that the women always look their
best in the peace and choir that follows a storm.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
Very good, but it would have been a lot nice
if you'd thought it that yourself.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
Well, as a matter of fact, it did.
Speaker 6 (30:28):
You won't take my advice, will you?
Speaker 2 (30:29):
You mean leave town? Huh hu? Huh?
Speaker 6 (30:31):
Here I got something for you.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
What's the rabbits for him?
Speaker 6 (30:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (30:35):
Take it and keep away from dark corners. I'll see
inside maybe huh. Gotta do my number?
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Yeah, sure, sure, I'll be right in see you. Wait
a minute, that street? I see now why you don't
need guns?
Speaker 6 (30:47):
You do?
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Yeah? Why I can't get my cattle through and I'm
taking them through in spider you can't or anybody else.
I'd think twice? Why will you tend for? I started
trespassing cutting in on Ken two or three different ways.
Aren't you sorry you made me do that? Tendall might
be sorry? Oh? Good evening match, lad evening? So cracy
(31:20):
sure seems a song business game? She should? I kind
of hoping i'd find you here, man, I want to
talk to you. Not a private coperment for destiny or
is it on on on? Why don't you join us? Ken? Thanks?
I will well, I tell you, I O what was
on my mind. I just don't think we're getting the
kind of cooperation around town we should be got no, no, no.
(31:42):
It seems every time the sheriff for me asked a question,
folks just shut up or walk away like they never
heard it him. My guess is they just don't cost
me to sheriffs around here, all right? Probably right? Sheriff
Watson wasn't very popular either, was he? Meaning? Watch? Well,
nothing special frenchy over here.
Speaker 6 (32:01):
Do you like my number, mister Destri?
Speaker 2 (32:03):
Oh yeah, I like that. Good.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
Then you can buy me a drink. Huh sure fine,
that's the idea of the song, you know, gets me
free drinks.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
I saw gathered that I by what's on your mind? Destry?
I'm telling you now, Wat's in left town. Well, that's
what I say. That's what I say. But we thought
he might have left something behind, like a body. Maybe.
Oh I see, I see. You couldn't prove a case
without one, could you. I'll try it, and suppose we
(32:30):
knew where there was one.
Speaker 6 (32:31):
Oh, this is a lively conversation when a lady wants
a drink. Come on, deputy, let's go to the bar.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
Wait a minute, I haven't settled with Destri yet. For
that very good favor he did me out at Claggett's ranch.
They called for some champagne, the best. Well that case,
better stay right here, I'll frenchy yeh, come here, Yeah, Jenny,
tell Eddie the ice up some champagne and send it
over to the table. Sure, boys, wait a minute and
(32:57):
right out to the place and see if it's gone.
Ooh you mean yeah? If it is, then Destre has
done it. If he did, can I personally slap him
in the mouth with my pistol? Hit Now? You wouldn't
want to hit a dead man, would you? Oh? Oh,
I see what you mean. I'll get going. You don't.
(33:21):
Marc full of Johnny can't reminds me of a friend
of mine. Kansas City drinks not one but wine every
time he comes to town.
Speaker 6 (33:27):
I had have done New Orleans like that. On he
was crazy about clams.
Speaker 7 (33:30):
Every time he'd come to town, he rushed to the
nearest restaurant order a hundred clams.
Speaker 6 (33:35):
Oh, I'm sorry, I interrupted him.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Oh that's all right. I don't think there's much a
point to my story. What about the clowns.
Speaker 7 (33:40):
Yeah, in this particular time, they didn't have any clams,
so they got up oysters and he just about tore
the place down.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
He was so mad.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
What's the point to there?
Speaker 5 (33:48):
Well, the point is he found a pearl, and one
of them that big.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
That's cool.
Speaker 6 (33:52):
No, no, it was bad the oyster. I mean it
killed him.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Who got the pearl?
Speaker 1 (33:57):
I did? Well?
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Here it is Destiny Champagne. Yeah, I'd better go easy
if I want to do any sheriff on tomorrow. You
might take the day off it man might have there. Well,
if I'm gonna make an evening all but how about
you and me having a dance, frenchie? All right, if
you can, sure, go right ahead.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
You don't listen with you, but I'm not gonna warn
your door.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
It's all right. I still got your rabbits for you. Say.
Speaker 6 (34:25):
Isn't that I feel a sheriff rushing on it?
Speaker 8 (34:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (34:28):
I believe it is Tom, Tom, Tom, give me quick.
I'm sorry, Franchi.
Speaker 6 (34:32):
I'm sorry too, Tom A wasting.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
All that's fine? Watch fine, I get back to the
jail house, to the calendar. I'll head the things here, sure, Tom.
I stopped the music, alright, hold it out for hold
it out?
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Everybody stop the music?
Speaker 2 (34:54):
Are uh, sorry to interrupt, folks, but I got a
little official business, you know, uh, marsh and me has
been pestering you folks with a lot of questions about
the former sheriff Watson. Hold on, now, hold on, you
ain't gonna ask any more question because wassh just found
the answer. And one more thing. All relatives and friends
(35:15):
of Jiff Hiller are hereby notified that he's in the
jail house charged with murder. That's all.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
Heyah, wait a minute.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
My brother didn't have nothing to do with that murder.
I don't get excited. Buck's egg. Jeff grain't hanged yet,
and he's not gonna be. You'll get over there and
turn them loose. Freddie can't do that, Kent, not till
after a trial. Maybe by then he'll explain what he
was doing just now when Callahan and the sheriff found
him with Watson's body. No, now, I'm sure mister Kent
had no idea you had evidence like that. Yes, I
(35:44):
think we got a pretty good case near air tight.
I'd say, good works, good work, And just to make
sure there won't be no miscarriage of justice. As chief
Magistrate of Bottleneck as well as mayor, I'm going to
try this yere case myself. Uh huh, I see what
you mean? So do I sorry? I got so upset. Oh, thanks, frenchie,
(36:07):
I believe I've danced at Kent's two. Long enough, good night.
We paused. Now for station identification. This is CBS, the
Columbia Broadcasting System. In a minute, we'll.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
Bring you the third act of Destry Rides Again, starting
James Stewart and Joan Blondell.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Streaming lives from Stony Point.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
This is Clinton River Radio dot Com, your local Rockland
County station.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
Our curtain rises on Act three of Destrie Rides Again,
starring Jimmy Stewart as Tom Destrie and Joan Blondell as Frenchie.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Jip hillars in jail, charged with.
Speaker 4 (37:22):
A murder of Sheriff Watson, but with Mayor Slade presiding
over the forthcoming trial, Justice in Bottleneck still is just
a joke. An hour ago, Tom Destri locked up another prisoner,
Jack Tindall, and now Janice has rushed to the jailhouse.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Don't get upset, Janis. I had to put him in jail.
Speaker 6 (37:43):
But why what did he do?
Speaker 2 (37:44):
Grovidge cattle through Kent's property. That's trespassing.
Speaker 6 (37:47):
I see it's all right for murderers to go free,
but trespass.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
Nobody's gone free yet.
Speaker 6 (37:52):
No, Tom, I wish I could understand you.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Ah, don't worry. I think we got a chance, good chance,
a chance for what I can't say right now. Now.
If you want to see Jack, oh please, Well he's
down here.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Jack. Hello, Jane.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
But I told you I was gonna bring our cattle through,
and I did. I didn't pay a penny. I ain't
gonna pay. Nobody's gonna make me. Jack.
Speaker 5 (38:16):
You're the most stubborn, ornery, mule headed.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
Self opinionated. It's a good word.
Speaker 6 (38:20):
Oh, I give up. Talking to Jack's like talking to
a stone wall.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
Yeah, Jip Paller won't talk, and your brother won't listen.
You know, if he was reasonable and paid Kent the
money for moving his cattle, he could turn right around
and sue and get it all back. Sue Kent with
Slate is the judge. Well you must think I'm really dumb.
All right, Oh, I'd forgot it. Well anyway, Janas, thanks
for trying to help out. Jack will be here for
some time. So it's here, it's here, I got it.
(38:46):
I got It's Callahan, it's King. The letter Yes here
from Chamne Oh thanks. Yeah, let's see now that's alright.
Uh ah, here's something I'd like to read Jack from
a friend of mine. He's a federal judge with a
hankering for travel. Huh. Now, maybe you can see why
(39:08):
I wanted you to pay Kent Slade won't be on
the bench. And if you can just keep from getting
your fool head shot off until that federal judge gets here,
I can get my convictions and you can get your
money back. See what you mean. Okay, okay, I'll pay
him here here, I got a draft and well, spick
o cash it. Now that's your job, Callahan. Then take
the money over to can get a receipt. Yes, Commander,
(39:30):
I'm a courier, a both of lightning but silence of
the night.
Speaker 6 (39:33):
Well, you better wait for the draft, mister Callahan.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
Oh here, come right back, all right, Tendall, I'm turning
you loosing your sister's custody. Wise, why don't you go
home get a little sleep for yourself. I'll handle things
round here at the jail here, Yes, I will, Tim,
(39:59):
guess we carry and it'd come back. Oh, it's gonna
work out fine, wash, JIP's gonna tell us a whole
lot as soon as he finds out Slade isn't gonna
be judge, so hardly seem possible. Tom, Now, who is
that reporting excellency with ver seat see can't sign to
himself good work Callahan? Who is not Callahan anything specially
(40:22):
going on in the shaloon, very little mayor slay the
sweating in his jewelry two hundred dollars each for now
three hundred more. When they said Jip hillar free, he's
wasting kench cash. He could tack a jury for at least,
that's what I told him. I said, just wait till
that federal George gets here, and then you'll see what
I said, Just wait till that federal Oh oh, I
(40:46):
presume you'll want the Pence back with the badge. No, no,
it doesn't matter. Callahan doesn't matter. Now he won't be
any trying now, Tom crooked or no, they be down here,
turn this jailer park and turning Jip blues or maybe
not maybe not maybe for once we got 'em scared. Tom. Oh,
it's alright. Was it's the only French he's made.
Speaker 7 (41:08):
It's the district This French says, she wants to see
you right away, She says, it's awful important.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
Ah, I tell him be right over, Tom, you're walking
into an ambush. They'll spots you out on that street. No,
I hardly think so, was not yet now you you
just hold down the ford here. Well, don't worry learning
about me. I will.
Speaker 6 (41:30):
Glad you decided to come home.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
Oh. Your made said it was important. Well it is trouble.
Speaker 6 (41:35):
Nope, no trouble. Leaving town to night and wanted to
see you before I left.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
M pretty sudden, isn't a frenchy?
Speaker 6 (41:42):
Well I'm like that.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
Well, something happened or something.
Speaker 7 (41:46):
But a newsman, I won't be so suspicious. I'm just
tired of bottle making. I'm going back to New Orleans,
miss me.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Yeah, I guess it will.
Speaker 6 (41:54):
Oh the Utendall's sister getting me off your mind?
Speaker 2 (41:57):
Uh no, Well, well, anyway, i'd like to wish your
good luck. Good luck in a nice trail.
Speaker 6 (42:02):
Didn't answer my question.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
Uh, I'd better get back to the job here.
Speaker 6 (42:06):
Tom, you never been to New Orleans. No, it's a
wonderful town. You'd like it there, how about it?
Speaker 2 (42:16):
Well? Well, what's that listen? Not shooting's coming from the
jail house?
Speaker 6 (42:21):
Tom knows you can't go out there.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
Why not?
Speaker 6 (42:22):
Kat knows all about the federal judge. They'll kill here.
Speaker 5 (42:24):
They're getting gyp Now stay here, Tom, stay here.
Speaker 2 (42:27):
Oh so it was all your idea? Huh, yours and
cans get me away from the jail house. And I
was stupid enough to Did you get him? Tom?
Speaker 3 (42:45):
Tom?
Speaker 2 (42:46):
Did you get him?
Speaker 3 (42:48):
No?
Speaker 2 (42:49):
I sa they were gone when I got here. Sleep
Tom didn't hear. Julie was too late. I don't talk.
Was Callahan's getting talked? M Is it bad? Wash? No?
But it just makes me sit dunk gun back, shut
(43:11):
the back. That's the way they shut My paw that
didn't dare to face him either. Didn't give either us
if a chance, didn't they No, bro, dug it out? Oh,
pro dug it out. Wash. Listen to me. I'm going
(43:36):
to that room and house and I'm coming back here
wearing my father's guns. You'd like that, wouldn't your wash?
Because the was wash?
Speaker 1 (43:51):
Oh no, I'll wait a minute, desker.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
You can't do this alone. Where's the man that murdered Wash?
Where'd they go? There is a saloon. Cat's got it
barricaded like a floor. Now these men here desperate, say
the word block away. All right? All right, hold on now,
as long as you're with me, there are two things
I want. I want every freight wagon in town and
a stick of dynamite. We can get closer to the
salon and wagons than when we do. The dynamite will
(44:24):
open it up, all right? Now, come on, lets get
down of the craft.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
Wait.
Speaker 6 (44:27):
Wait, can't got thirty men in there.
Speaker 5 (44:29):
You won't have a chance.
Speaker 2 (44:29):
I thought you said you were leaving town. Come on,
because of your.
Speaker 9 (44:33):
Man, and who's stand there like a lot of sheep
while I walk out to slaughter whyn't just stop them?
Go back where you belong, wherever I belong. I don't
pretend you shut your painted. Would wait around for my
man to.
Speaker 6 (44:42):
Get killed without doing something about it.
Speaker 5 (44:43):
I'm warning you, you, Jessebe.
Speaker 6 (44:44):
I wait a minute. Maybe she's right, Miss Tyndall. You
talk about doing something. What can we I'll show you
what you can do. Get every day in town and
follow me.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
All right?
Speaker 6 (45:03):
You met on your wagons.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
All right, you're headed down the main street. Bring your
horses to a gallop, and when I throw the dynamite,
cut in toward the saloon. Start shooting all right, let's
go that sow that kind of my doom.
Speaker 3 (45:34):
Sorry, head by head in, tip the.
Speaker 2 (45:46):
