Hey, Dan, welcome, Thank you for having me.

Oh, I'm very excited.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
It's nice to catch up with you a little bit
before we started, and I can tell right away we're
going to be fast friends. Your passion is already very
evident to me, and I would like to start the show.
I'd love to hear it kind of about your history
with Star Wars and when you kind of became a
fan of this franchise.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Well, this is going to give away a little bit
of my age, but it was on a fall of
nineteen seventy seven. I grew up in Italy. I am.
I was in a small town in central Italy and
in a home where my dad was the chief sci

(03:20):
fi buff. He was a real nerd. We grew up
with Asimov and that was mandatory reading for me and
my sister. So the movie was ready sensation in Italy.
You know, the briple effects from the summer launch in
the US had gotten there. But this was like pre TikTok,

(03:42):
pre social media. So for a kid like me, I
didn't know anything about the movie, and I knew that
my father was taking me there. I knew that it
was sci fi, it was based off and I was
going to be a lot of ships at the time
without major approval from my dad. I was big, big,

(04:03):
big fan smitten by Space nineteen ninety nine, so TV
series that came out a few months before, and I
was absolutely obsessed with the Moon based Alpha. I was
in love with Doctor Russell. And the only toy that
I ever wanted all this that I peppered my father

(04:24):
with requests was a replica of the Ego spaceships. So
going in, I was standing my dad, I'm gonna love it,
but it's never gonna be as good as Space nineteen
ninety nine or so please wait. And then as soon
as the light went out, I remember as it was
today because it was a physical and metaphysical experience for me.

(04:48):
The light went out, the score came on, the Far
Far Away Galaxy description started rolling in, and then there
was that rumble that I still remember of the Imperial
Destroyer and chasing Princess Leah's tent tanted floor and shit
and the rumbled that basically was shaking me inside out,

(05:11):
and the whole screen was full of this gigantic ship
and it was shot from underneath. It was incredible. I
you know, I was seven years old and I was shaking.
I was nervous. I was like sweating, and from there
on it was just a crescendo of emotions. You know,
all the characters came on, and you know, a minute

(05:34):
into the opening, Seeing Dark Vather came on and it
was scarying the hell out of me. Never forget about it.
I think at one point my dad was a little
bit worried because I was literally shaking. It still remembers.
My dad is old, still alive, and I calmed me down,

(05:54):
got me some extra coke, and then we stayed for
the second show. So I saw it back to back
and been in love. Never forgot the experience ever since.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
What a beautiful story. We're of a very similar generation.
I saw in nineteen seventy eight when I was almost six.
I saw that a drive in movie theater in New Orleans, Louiseana.
And I've never had anyone explain as like a literal,
metaphysical experience, because that is exactly the way to describe it.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
So you obviously I have.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Loved it ever since, which is so cool for me
as a fan and as a collector.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
And then we have fan Home.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
And fan Home makes these products.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
That are just amazing.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
But I'm not going to describe it I'm here with
the expert to kind of talk about.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
What fan home is and what makes fan home so unique.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
So fan Home is a brand that was created sort
of a span of long established Italian global brand in collectibles,
which is the Agostini and fan Home. We're going to
go a little bit into the history of the Agostini,

(07:12):
but Phantom itself was creating in twenty twenty and the
objective was to appeal to pop culture fans and collectors
all over the world through the Agostini, through the history
of the Agossini, and the partnerships that we have with

(07:34):
almost every major entertainment license or out there. We have
been developing large scale models for the past twenty five
years basically, and at one point we realized that a
growing portion of these models were fan based. So we
created a home for our fans of these products, very

(07:59):
very focused where you know, different fandoms sort of co
exist and what makes it especially there are you know,
very basic, very basic point one is, as I said,
the death of the catalog. If you browse through fun

(08:19):
home dot com, you see the amazing, you know, the
number of the products that we have, simply amazing, the
number of new releases that we have every single month,
which is mind boggling if you think about it. And
all of these are basically linked with very high valuable
you know ips from the major studios and and entertainment

(08:43):
studios around the world. Then it's all of this is
combined with unique business model. I mean not that collection,
subscription or continuity is that unique or everybody knows about it,
but it's the fact that basically we we merge subscription

(09:08):
and continuity with collecting collectibles and collection and it turns
into this like long immersive experience that last over time
and brings the fan to through different steps until the
final product. And that there's very little, very very few

(09:28):
other brands, I will say none that can give you
that kind of experience. Then the scale of the models
and details, I mean, they're so incredibly intricate. You know.
The final product of a build up, what we call
a model kit, is truly museum quality, but it's done
in a way that it's easier to assemble than most

(09:51):
model kids, traditional model kids out there. And the last
part done is the part where you have been a
fantastic partner with us, which is the editorial component. So
everything that we do every product, Every collection comes with
exclusive editorial content that we develop internally. The Agostini is

(10:14):
at heart a publishing company, continues to be a publishing company.
So every collection has an average of fifteen hundred to
two thousand pages of content. But we're going to be
talking about our data one two scale model in this conversation.
And when you complete our collection, you're going to have

(10:35):
this fantastic statue model of you know, over three feet tall.
But you're also going to have an encyclopedia Star Wars
encyclopedia over two thousand pages that you can bound together
and you know, taken from a very unique angle, which
is the angle of the villains, the criminals, the smugglers,

(10:58):
the traitors from every of the galaxy. So truly, so
if I have to sum it up, you know, you know,
find Home is this mix of fandom nostalgia craftsmanship that
it's both hand on and not to dreaven.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Fan Home is and I mean this, I wouldn't even
be saying I would I've been saying this anyway. Fan
Home is a dream because, as you so eloquently just stated,
you go online, there are several different options to choose from.
We're clearly we're working together on the build your on
Darth Vader. But there there's a million Falcon, there's an

(11:44):
R two D two. So every few weeks you get
this model kit, as you mentioned in the mail, and
it's it's packaged beautifully. It's got some individual pieces. The
first issue, the first part came with the bottom are
like kind of the top part of Vader's helmet, and

(12:04):
then some electronics and some things that go to and
attachment together. And there's these magazines that come with them.
As you mentioned, I'm the chief writer on these. I'm
writing all these and there's going to be over one
hundred and twenty issues right and it is a very
full Star Wars encyclopedia, purely focusing on dark side users

(12:24):
of the Force and then criminals, pirates, smugglers, scoundrels, narrow
do wells, any.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
Way you'd like to describe.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
You get every couple weeks, you get a model you
get to keep working on, plus the magazine which is beautiful,
full color, and then instructions that are very easy. And
this is where I'm the most excited, because I'm also
an educator. I'm also a high school teacher, and I
know how hard it can be to try to teach
people things. You want it to be challenging, but you

(12:53):
also want it to be not so challenging that you
just feel intimidated and can't do it. And somehow you
and your team have made this perfect, beautiful blend of
a good fun challenge that isn't difficult and you enjoy it.
I was so worried I was gonna be I'm like,
I wrote this magazine and I'm going to be some dork,
some dope who can't build it. And I am building it.

(13:14):
And by the time, as you said, when you're done,
I have a three foot tall museum called a Darth Vader.
It's the coolest thing, Luca. It's just so amazingly cool.
I can't wait for people to get their hands on
if they aren't already subscribed.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Now, yeah, when we when we when we challenge, when
we sit down and start thinking about the development process
for any new product like down Vader. And we have
a few more exciting characters on the Star Wars line

(13:48):
that are coming up in the next month, but we have,
you know, just two main things that is basically printed everywhere.
So it's that those are the principles that we go by,
and everybody knows in the company that it has to
be easy to build, So no glue, no painting, It's
basically screws and push and click. But at the same time,

(14:13):
this simplicity in assembly doesn't have to come at the
cost of details, intricacy, engineering, and more than anything else,
you know, faithfulness to the original character in the in
the IP. So these are the two things. It has
to be simple, but it has to be real. It

(14:35):
has to be faithful, it has to be authentic.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
It is very ornate and and I kept I kept
showing my wife, look at how detailed this is, and
and it's and it's it really is gorgeous. I'm I'm
very excited about it. I do want to talk about
Darth Vader naturally, But when I saw that you did
the Falcon rt D two already, I was one jealous.
I wasn't I didn't work on those, but I was like,

(14:59):
I got I get these too. Which, how what is
it like to design these iconic ships and droids and villains.
That must be quite a daunting but exciting challenge.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
Okay, so here, if you have a couple of minutes,
you just want to give you a little bit of
a background on the Agostinian Fund home we've been as
a company, we have a very long history of designing, creating,
engineering and producing these large scale models. In the first
one that we made us either nineteen ninety nine or

(15:34):
two thousand and it was the one eighty four replica
of the HMS Victory told ship that Nelson was on
the Battolock trafowder the Napoleonic words. And at the time
the problem was launching in different markets in Europe where

(15:57):
they were seeing it is still very active UK, France, Italy,
and it was like a tremendous, insane success. And the
model basically was the this like huge toll ship made
of wood, brass and cloth for the for the sales,
and people just went crazy, not just the modelers, not

(16:22):
just the history bulbs, but just the generic public and
the way that it was positioned, communicated and developed. It
was basically the beginning of the of that sentiment that
I described before. So there's a narrative, there's a history behind,
there is a myth behind. We make it real, you
build it so you can become part of the dream.

(16:43):
And it was clear it was I was think it
was the first company come up with that idea that
they did invent the build ups in subscription and it
was created from there. You know, there was you know,
the universe was our you know that it was a
u universal possibilities. We went into Dicass cars, we went

(17:04):
into Dikass war planes, and then at one point with
that experience that over time was built into the company,
that creative experience and skills, soft skills in designing and
being able to imagine a large scale model and break

(17:24):
it down into five hundred components retro engineering them so
that anybody can easily assemble it. We went to a
We said, why don't we go to tow to Lucas Film,
Why don't we go to you know, we do something
in Star Wars. And that's that's what happened. We went
to Lucas and said, hey, you know, we did this

(17:46):
car with this Lamborghini. We want to do the same
with Millennium Falcon. And at the beginning they didn't take
it very well, you know, just to be very polite,
they were quite skeptical that we that we could do it,
but we convinced them to provide us with material with blueprints,
shots of the props from the movie, whatever was left.

(18:08):
It's never a lot with with Lucas, and you know,
they were amazed by the final results when we got
the founder approval for the pre production samples that were
absolutely in all and and that basically gave us, you know,
open the door for the following model, the X Wing,

(18:30):
the R two D two and now now Dark Vata.
But so it was a long process. It's you know,
we just didn't wake up one day and we said, okay,
we're gonna do a one two scale gigantic model of
dark Data. It was incredible set of skills that was
developed in the company over the course of twenty years.

Speaker 4 (18:47):
Amazing. Well, the Falcon itself.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
I keep going back because it's.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Just my favorite.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
It is beautiful, it's gorgeous, it's gorgeous. Were the unique
challenges to the Falcon that didn't exist with other things.
There's just so many angles to it and there's so
many pieces to it. I guess it's not different than
a car, but maybe it is.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
It's fantastic one, if not my favorite model. But you know,
over you know, over this, the course of this, you know,
the twenty years at one point we and this probably
was driven by the success of the Marvel movie franchises,

(19:29):
starting with Iron Man. We thought that was an opportunity
to apply once again these skills into a completely different
set of products, and so that when the first character
built up, a character model kit was taught, and the
first was Iron Man that came out twenty eighteen, I think.

(19:51):
Then we followed up with Optimus Prime. We did et
a couple of years ago, and now dar Data.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Did you do the Dolorean from Back to the Future
as well?

Speaker 1 (20:03):
So Delorian was developed by another company that's no longer
in business, was acquired by the Agostini But yes, it's
part of the catalog. Yes, it's an another company called
Ego Moss.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
Okay, fabulous. Well, well, let's talk about Darth Vader. Obviously,
well maybe it's not obviously some fans, but there the
the armor kind of goes over some tweaks over the years.
But talk about the design process for Vader.

Speaker 4 (20:29):
Which version is this?

Speaker 2 (20:30):
This fan home version of Darth?

Speaker 1 (20:32):
This is from episode five the Empires for expect.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Great And what was the collaborative process like with the
creation of this model?

Speaker 1 (20:40):
So normally the uh, you know, we work with a
company like uh Lucas Disney now they are it's easy
to to to imagine they're super protective of their intellectual property,
so they want to make absolutely sure that everything is faithful,

(21:03):
that no shortcuts, and that the final product is of
good value for their fans because that product has an
impact also on their fun base. So normally the way
that we work is the first point content point is
we sit down with their creative team and we try

(21:25):
to come up with a list of everything that exists
from the movies, so blueprints, props, design set, designs, samples, anything.
In this particular case, there was very very little. There
are some very cool blueprints on yellowish paper and blue

(21:52):
pencil which are super cool. I've seen them, but not
a lot of it. So some details we had a
lot of help coming from them, like the head, the helmet,
but some others we had to rely on high quality
screenshots and creative consulting from some of their show produce

(22:17):
a movie producer, and a lot of going back and
forth with with Lucas.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
And this how lot what's the time frame from concept
to let's start to creation and starting to make the models.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
So from concept, ideation to market Our average is between
eighteen to eighteen months to two years. Wow, so it's
a long process. So this first stop, these first interactions
basically produce a three D digital mockup, highly detailed, and

(22:58):
that gets approved by the by the license source, gets
approved by the Lucasfilm. Once we have the approval, we
go ahead with our manufacturing partners and our engineers and
we come up with three D prototype either either one
or two. One goes straight to the license or goes
straight to Lucas for approval when we keep inside for

(23:21):
photo shooting for the early marketing activities. Normally what normally
we hope there is not a lot of comments or
backlash once they see the the prototype for approval because
it would be uh, let's say, like a little bit

(23:45):
of a headache going back to the drawing board. UH.
Normally we don't you know, the uh the digital three
D file is uh is highly detailed. So that's the
number one hurdle, the biggest hurdle to get that approved.
The prototype gets approved, we put together production lines and

(24:11):
we do early production samples. Those are finished, that packed
up both in the final packaging and as loose product
sent again to Lucas for their final approval and once
we get that, we we go on with manufacturing.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
Mhm, wow, it's well the work and the quality I
think speaks for itself. We're talking about each individual kit.
Is there a is there sort of a time frame
you have in mind of how long you would like
each kit to last or is it sort of understood.

Speaker 1 (24:48):
That some will take longer than others, some take longer
than others. And but in general terms, the way that
we design it is that our fans and customers have
enough building material for four weeks. In the actual time

(25:11):
is less than four weeks. We see that after the
initial impact, it's quite easy to get your hands on
and to be to become quite adept. So a lot
of fans they choose to to to keep the different

(25:33):
kits to build a buffer and then to have the
like one or two week sessions in which they build
thirty percent of the model and they go all in.
So it's the concept of okay, should do I wait
every single episode every week or do a weekend binging
And a lot of customers they do binging build ups

(25:56):
with our models because.

Speaker 4 (25:57):
They don't want to wait that long.

Speaker 2 (25:59):
But but the AO right that you could just enjoy
a kid one kit at a time and maybe take
an hour a couple hours per kit and just and
then just and just enjoy the whole process.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
Absolutely, yes, So.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
It's nice to have that option. It's like binging a
television series.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
So for some some models, we offer the possibilities. You know,
it's not always possible because of production constraints. UH, but
we offer you know, like expet added options. So for
select models, you can choose to receive a small discount
double the amount of kids every month so that you

(26:40):
have more building material and the you complete the project
in less time.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
That makes sense. Is and and these the dearth Vader model.
It not only does it museum quality, but it also
there are lights and sound effects.

Speaker 4 (26:58):
Talk about that if you would.

Speaker 1 (27:00):
So it's it's it's it's a big model. It's one
two scale, so it's way over like three feet tall.
And uh, it's made of combination of metal that has
metal mostly for the skeleton inside. Uh. And then you
have all the A B s and for the armor

(27:25):
and the the the helmet and the components and the
clothing part the for the for the mantle and everything else.
It has amazing features he's got lights led lights on
the belt on the chest and light saber is highly

(27:46):
articulated in the hands, legs and arm, so that it
can be it you know, it can be posed and
you can choose the iconic post where it's almost the
dark force. One of these subordinates that it's not being
too efficient, you know, with the lightsaber. It has two

(28:08):
sets of hands. It's actually cool story that I wanted
to tell you. We had to create two sets on
hands because the hands are are they are articulated. But
we obviously wanted to have the red light sabillite lightsaber.
So but because the way that Disney now is slices

(28:31):
that licenses, I mean, it was impossible because that license
was for somebody else, for a toy manufacturer. So what
we decided to do is work quite clever from our engineers.
In the model, we have two sets of hands, one
which is as I said, is articulated so you can

(28:51):
change the shape and of the hands. Another one is fixed.
But it's the one way you can actually put the
lightsaber are in and that basically gave us, you know,
get us over the obstacle of being able to include
the lightsaber in the model.

Speaker 2 (29:07):
So that's pretty neat. That's that's that's that's a very uh.
It's efficient too because fans like, I mean actually figures now, uh,
different scales come with multiple heads, multiple hands to so
that because people like to pose, customize, right.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
So two more important you know from this point to
be Also it's important you're the the helmet is removable,
so you have dark batter head underneath that you also
build through the process. And that last model least, uh,
it has voice effects, so there are motion proximity sensors

(29:47):
that activate the uh. These you know a long list
of of phrases. You know some you know, some iconic,
iconic ones, yes, like uh, you have fail me for
the last time, stuff like that. But you know, kind
of cool.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Listening to coffee with Knobe, you are with dan Z.
The podcast you're looking for this is Bitch the Friends Listening.
I cannot overestimate or over sell how gloriously exciting this

(30:26):
product is.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Because if you like.

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
