Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Cold Cases Solved Podcast, a podcast that
shares the most recent solved cold cases. Our purpose is
to help bring closure to the victims' families and hope
for those waiting for justice. Let's begin.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Official with the GBI, Georgia Bureau Investigation and other departments
provide updates on the arrest of John Rorel fifty eight,
in connection to the two thousand and six murder of
his wife, Doris Rorel. She was shot and killed in
September twenty, two thousand and six, almost twenty years ago,
and investigators today believed that John recruited someone to murder

(01:19):
his wife because he was concerned that if he divorced,
he would lose his children. According to a GBI Special
Agent in charge, information was obtained that John and Doris
were having marital issues. Part of those issues included John's
inappropriate relationship with the then living in Nanny Howla Yarbery,
and on September twentieth nine, two thousand and six, investigators
say John succeeded in his conspiracy to have his wife murdered.

(01:45):
In addition, the JBI special agent says after Doris's murder,
John lost sympathy and the investigation began to highlight him,
he did what murders do. He ran. First. John went
to Fernandina Beach, Florida. Next he went to Costa Rica.
Paula was sent to himig ration facility and deported because
she didn't have the paperwork. John and Paula later were
spotted together in Costa Rica. Investigators say that the two

(02:08):
denied a relationship, but they raised children as that they
were their own. In the early stages of the investigation,
two men, Lytton Rodriguez and Brandon Page, were arrested with
conspiracy to murdered Doris, but the investigation continued there was
not enough evidence to convict either one of them. Since
their arrest, one has died and the other was released
from prison. In recent years, John and Paula ended their relationship.

(02:29):
John moved back to the US. Then a new GBI
agent was assigned to the case and devised a creative
investigative game plan. The GBI in the County Sheriff's office
and Coffee executed the investigation, which led him to Costa Rica,
where they say Paula eventually cooperated. When questioned during the
press conference, the GBI agent told WLB that Paula is

(02:50):
not considered a suspect. Investigators obtained warrant arrest warrants for
John and traveled to his new residence in Missouri. Now
John is back in Coffee County. He had his first
appearance in the morning and was denied bought. He was
arrested on May twenty, twenty twenty fifth. He wants to
be clear, According to the Chicuinty Sheriffs, they said, I
want to be clear. This case was never forgotten. And

(03:12):
while the world has been long, the road has been
long and off and frustrating, we never gave up. Dorris's
older sister, Leanne, was president At the press conference. She
spoke openly and emotionally about the loss of her sister,
including that the DA was unable to attend the press conference,
but the former GBI agent was there, so it looks
like they might have closure. So far, they just arrested him.

(03:35):
But so we don't have anything else yet except for
the arrest of the former husband.
