Speaker 3 (01:04):
I'm doing good then, how about you? Good afternoon?
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Hey, good afternoon. Appreciate you joining us for another segment
of Let's talk about stats. Let's start off with the
football stat Okay, I just penned a piece it's going
to be dropping on KSEL dot com about BYU's creative
and committee approach with their rushing game and their run game.
I think it's been really cool to see how they've
done it now it's majority LJ. Martin bear Bachmeyer. Through
(01:28):
the first five games, they've rushed two hundred one times
for sevent yards, averaging five point eight yards per carry,
and fourteen touchdowns. Definitely a testament to a team that
has successfully relied on a creative committee approach. Three of
the top seven of the leading rushers actually wide receivers too,
which is I found interesting Parker Kingston, Dominique Mackenzie, and
(01:52):
Cody Hagen with some chunkyard at plays coming from them.
But BA has run the ball sixty percent of its
offensive plays this season, compared to forty percent through the air.
We got we got stormy weather on the horizon in
Tucson with Hurricane Priscilla. Uh And you ideally want eventually
to maybe limit some of Bear Bachmeyer's touches in the
(02:14):
run game. But uh and and by the way, Arizona
has yet to allow passing touchdown all season long, so
it it seems like b Yu is gonna win this
one through the ground. But when I give you some
of those rushing stats and that foundation, like, what does
that make you think? What questions does that maybe bring
(02:34):
to mind about do we need an RB two? Do
we can we continue to rely on kind of the
smattering of different rushers, wide receivers, et cetera in order
to win games on the ground.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Give me your thoughts, well, Ben, I'd love the stats.
I think it's cool to hear. It is helpful to know.
Obviously we're five and zero, and it's it's neat to see.
And if you gotta, if you will allow me to
put my investment spin on it, and certainly from a
portfolio manager, stamp point, I give a rod An a
plus for diversification.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Love that's right.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
I think he's doing a great job the ball. And
then even when I hear that stat about sixty forty gosh,
I mean know anything about investments and portfolios. A lot
of times you'll hear people with sixty forty blends, But
to me, that's sixty percent. Is like, it's the it's
the steady Eddy, it's the ground game, it's the grind.
(03:29):
And for us from an investment standpoint, that's the income
side of a portfolio, just having good wins step by
step bringing things in and so to me, a for diversification,
I love the ground game. That's the income side of
a portfolio. And I think we got a well diversified mix.
And so to answer your question, you know it's going
(03:50):
to come down to injuries, of course, but if LJ
and Bear can keep going, they can handle the pounding
that comes. I like our chances. I'm good with the diversecation,
especially with a freshman quarterback.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah. One of the questions is are they just one
injury away from being in dire straits in the run
game or can that you know, that committee approach diversification
the variability of like who's toting it, maybe a wide
receiver or a backup running back. Is there an issue
with that? Are we one injury away? Let's talk some
other financial stats here we're getting into the fourth quarter.
(04:23):
I love talking football and financial status. Here you talk
about fourth quarter, that's when it matters most investors start
reviewing their end of year plans. What should people be
thinking about when it comes to maybe ROTH contributions or
conversions before the year wraps up.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
That's a great question. And people are familiar with tax
time for CPAs and how busy it can be February
March April. Well, for us to cfps, this is our
busy season Q four. This is a critical window for
ROTH planning. I'm a huge advocate for rock aras. I
know they don't apply in every situation, but this is
when we help clients evaluate whether a WROTH conversion makes sense.
(05:05):
We got an idea of what income is going to
look like, we know what the marginal tax brackets look like,
and this the goal is to strategically shift dollars from
tax deferred accounts into tax free growth accounts without pushing
yourself into a higher bracket. We know that ROTH contributions
can be made up until April fifteenth of next year,
but now is a good time to look for opportunities
(05:27):
at a potential WROTH conversion. Perhaps a backdoor wroth a
strategy could be applied, but if done right, these moves
can create long term tax free income and retirement, eliminate
a few of the variables, and help build a more
tax efficient plan heading into the new year. It's a
great time of year to be thinking about this.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
No doubt about it, and speaking of next year, what
are some of the maybe the moves investors can make
right now to strengthen that our portfolios, maybe incorporating tax
and investment planning for twenty twenty six.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Well, especially for our and we work with a number
of credited investors. In the fourth quarter is when we
are super proactive, and this means rebalancing portfolios, reviewing gains
and losses, looking at tax smart investment opportunities. They could
include a ten thirty one exchange if someone sold real
estate or plans to sell real estate. It could include
(06:21):
energy investments like oil and gas programs that offer intangible
drilling cost deductions, or charitable contributions, whether that be to
your church or whether it be to a donor advice fund.
We do things like conservation easements that provide a multiple
on those charitable contributions or on those donations, and so
(06:42):
these are all ways to stay diversified while using the
tax code to your advantage. We recognize and realize that
the largest bill in retirement for our clients is going
to be their tax bill, and so we just want
to implement a tax and investment strategy, maximize this year
in plan, and then get positioned for twenty twenty six.
It's not going to be long before it's right here, no.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Doubt about it. Blaine Anderson Certified Financial Planner, NFLPA Certified
Financial plan How did you get that NFLPA certification as well?
I know that was an in depth and extensive process.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Yeah. I was recommended to me by an nfl agent,
an agent that's worked with Barry Sanders, Jerome bettis a
lot of icons and Hall of famers. He saw some
of the work we were doing and recommended that I
get registered with the NFLPA. I didn't even know it
was a thing, but we went through. It was about
a year and a half a process. They want qualified,
(07:40):
They require a CFP designation, they require increased bonding. You
have to have experience minimum of eight years. I'm now
starting my seventeenth year. So there were a number of
things that were important and required to do that, but
it's kind of cool there's a database we receive additional
training and insight regarding athletes. But it's also been helpful
(08:03):
in the service that we provide to clients. I've even
had a few that are asked to see that report
that was done and so we're happy to share it.
But it's been fun to bring together professional and business
and do some things that include my passion, which is sports.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Last thing, a little football stat as of October seventh,
right this week, Cougar's rank thirty fourth nationally and rushing
yards per game and forty third and rushing yards per carry,
and then they're third in the Big Twelve and total
rushing yards and second in the Big Twelve and rushing
yards per game, So falling out in the Big Twelve
and not doing too shabby as it relates to rushing

ability and that rush game in college football. Blaine, we
