How about them Cougars. After the rain delay, it got
a little bit murky, got a little bit ugly, got
a little bit scary, and the cardiac Cougars, though, came
out on top. Yes, your quarters, all levels were high. Yes,
you thought that Byu was gonna fall to the wildcats,
(01:29):
and bear down was all that you were gonna hear
as bear Bachmeier struggled to throw the football, struggle to
maybe make good decisions, but in the fourth quarter found
a way tote in the rock for tuddies, and by
You ultimately got the dub in double over time and
it was glorious.

Who's live down there in Tucson, Arizona taking film of
all the moisture that fell in Tucson before BYU finally
found a way to win. Let's welcome in Ronald three
Man Weaver to the show Ronnie had you living.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
What's up? Ben?
Speaker 3 (03:03):
I was there in Tucson. I was dry from the moisture.
I did see it fall. There was a lot of it.
It hit, it was soft, it was hard, you name it.
In that regard, the game was delayed, maybe they should
have moved the game up again, I don't know all
about the television things. B WYU came out hot. I said, oh,
is this gonna be a blowout? Then U of a
storm back. Very interesting ballgame. I'll say this though, because
(03:26):
you got to be on the field the last couple
of minutes and for overtime, and I'll say Bear Vackmeyer
is maybe a little bit more shifty than you think.
His touchdown run to tie it up, I got a
chance to see that. And overtime he's a problem. He
might not be able to cut it back like a
Jake Retz laugh. But I'm watching him put his foot
in the ground at two twenty five, two thirty, yeah
(03:47):
he I see why he's running over people. Ben, Again,
I was standing right through on the sideline. I got
a chance to see it. Because you always don't get
a chance to see things that quick when you're up
above you get to see everything developed.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
But he's fast, He's very fast.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
And then the wide receivers, I know there's a lot
of that Darius lasting pout a funny twenty five. It
is not a good d BF Arizona. This secondary was good.
But I'll say this though he was there were his
passing aferance. I'm standing right there. I'm watching the guy
hug him from behind in that regard. I know Eric
Dezona fense and maybe some media members were saying, no,
I saw with my own two eyes right there in
that end zone. It was shot at the chase and
(04:21):
Parker and Jerono's passingterferences.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
One of the things I want to highlight today is
Aaron Roderick the offense. I think he's definitely silence a
few haters, but it does get more difficult, There's no
doubt about it. It's gonna be get tougher with the
schedule on the back end here, but you gotta cell Lebrady.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
He's on his run.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
Defense had been stingy thus far this season. The most
they had given up on the ground was one hundred
and sixteen yards. They had given up sixty seven to
Hawaii one hundred and five to Cancer State, one hundred
and eleven to Iowa stayed in eighty nine to Oklahoma
State BYU toted for two hundred and fifty eight yards
almost two hundred and sixty yards. The offen fitsive line
(05:00):
deserves a ton of credit. The tight ends deserve a
ton of credit. Bear Bockmeyer and LJ. Martin also deserve
credit here as they were the ones that were running
the football, but the blocking was superior.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
TJ.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Woods also needs a tip of the cap. We gotta
find an RB two in my opinion, But to shoot LG.
I think had what twenty five touches. He was also
in on much of the past pro as well, and
I believe now he was not targeted heavily in the
past game, but still a lot of reps. He had
(05:33):
twenty five total carries. Bear had twenty two total carries.
So I'm sure they were a little bit tired, a
little bit fatigued after a doubled overtime, double overtime win.
But we found a way to get that win. We're
going to celebrate it here on your UTI ESBN Ready
to Networks. Also welcome in Brett always bringing the Hammer,
Hammer Time Show, Hammer Time how thatck are you?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Buddy? Man?
Speaker 5 (05:53):
I got a lot of thoughts, and I thought they
were gonna all be focused on Buyu and Arizona, because man,
was that thing a barn burner. And then I saw
Kyle Whittingham's Monday press conference for Rivalry Week, and now
I have a hard time even remembering the double overtime
stunner that happened on Saturday night. There is so much
(06:14):
to digest and feast upon in this Kyle Whittingham press conference.
I know we'll do that at a later date, but
I'm having a hard time keeping my eyes just right
on the road where we are right now. An incredible game,
so much fun. There's part of me that wished that
they would have moved the game up. But you know
what I'll say now, given the win, given the cardiac coups,
(06:37):
given the double overtime, I'm glad they didn't move this
thing up because we would not have had the electric
experience that we.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
All got to have on Saturday night.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Now, if they would have lost, then I would have
been screaming from the heavens that this thing would have
been moved.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
But they didn't. They got the dub.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
It was incredible night, and it's gonna be an incredible
week going forward. There's so much content to be consumed,
so everybody needs to stick right here.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
All of it is going to center around the three
facets of BYU's football team, Offense, defense, and special teams
through six games six and zero. Now, which facet of
the BAYU Cougar football team have you been most impressed by? Offense,
defense or special teams? Because at times the special teams
has been a lead and other times it hasn't. At
(07:21):
times the defense has been a lead, at times it hasn't.
At times the offense has been e lead, sometimes it hasn't,
and typically they kind of balance themselves out in this
in these first six games. So I'm gonna let you
Cougar fans decide on that, and we'll get into some
of the metrics as well. But check out the rest
of our ESPN the fan starting lineup. We got to
start study cast as we always do. John Beckell join us,
(07:43):
Brady Papinga will join us, Tim Brown. We're also going
to contact Ryan Eldridge today. Shout out to Ryan Eldrick.
Will get into some sound here in the nitty GrITT.
Kalani Chatak post game sound reading between the lines, Brent
Brennan post game sound. The head coach of the UVA Wildcats,
Sialia Sarah Parker Kingston followed Sotwala bear Bachmeier.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
And it should be great, should be grand, should be wonderful.

hundred zero eight eight five. Complete Circuit Electric Complete Circuit
Electric Utah dot Com. All right, Kilani addressing the media
post game, like it was a wild one. It was
a wet one. It came down to a double overtime win.
But b what you had to get it into overtime.
(09:24):
They were down multiple scores, found away in the fourth
quarter to finally win this football game, to finally find
their offense, find their groove. Let's get into Kilanie. This
was his opening statement.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
What a great win for the team, and uh you know,
what a cool environment having all our fans over here
after all the delays and all that stuff. I appreciate
so want to tell the fans thank you for sticking
it out and being here with us and making noise
and making us fit home. And uh So, the tough game, obviously,
we got down behind, got behind the a little bit,
(10:00):
but the guys kept believing and didn't give up. And
I liked the outcome obviously, but I felt like we
there's a good moment for us. We just welcome to
adversity right now. We're just gonna stay positive and keep
working through this. But like the positivity we had to
enjoy this. Man, it's a lot of fun. You got
their six win were boiligible, so a lot of things
that we keep building off of, but we'll worry about
(10:22):
that on Monday. I think we owe to ourselves. I
owe it to this program and this team to focus
on relishing the victories and appreciating the opportunity you had
to represent and then your family and your loved ones
in this game. And I give a lot of credit
to Arizona told coach Brennan had his team ready, you know,
and it was one of those where we made one
more play than they did and just really fortunate and
(10:45):
thankful that we got the win. But I love the
way the guys stuck together and kept believing in each
other and kept believing in the process and knew that
eventually we'd have our time and our moments to make
it work. And thought about going for two at the
end of the game, but you know, everybody talking me
out of it, so I'm glad they did and here
we are. So I felt like a Rod J and
(11:06):
K Pop did a great job calling the game. And
you know, I thought Sidelined was a lot of had
a lot of energy. So this is a lot of
fun and just keep working and getting better. But right now,
part of the processes and join and joined tonight and
join the trip back home to program.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Kalani is never going to change his ways. He's a
fourth down guy. He's an individual that wants to go
for two when given the opportunity. He's a guy that
likes to go for fake punts, fake field goals, fake pats.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
He can be backed up on fourth down in his
own end zone and he may call for a fake
punt if you give him the look that that he's
maybe UH scouted.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
That's who Kalani is.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
It took his coaching staff to tell him, hey, let's
play for overtime. Let's play for uh an opportunity. Because
we we we far ourselves into this situation, like we
barely made it into this situation. We scored with little
to no time left. What was it, nineteen seconds left
on the clock. Let's play for overtime. I thought it
(12:12):
was also interesting that Uave's offense, which has been prolific
this season, decided with nineteen seconds left on their with
their own thirty yard line because it was a pooch
kick to kneel with. I think they didn't they have
a time out left too. They had a time out left.
They chose to kneel with nineteen seconds, BYU chose not
(12:35):
to go for two and play in OT. That's a
psychological study that we can delve into. But both of
those strategic decisions I think ultimately led by you and winning.
Now we never know what could happened. Maybe know if
Afa throws a pick in the secon didn't go.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
Brennan was asked specifically that question, why didn't you go
for it with those last twenty seconds, and his response
was the last thing we wanted to do was turn
the ball over. We were already on their end of
the field, give them the ball, they kick a field
going and win the game.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yeah, that's always what it's gonna be.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
But it goes to show he had fear that his
offense that had been pretty effective versus this defense the
most effective arguably. I mean, albeit Colorado did put up
twenty four points in regulation as well versus BYU, but
that's the most success that a offense has had against
(13:30):
Bay's defense. And you're at home, You're at home with
the best quarterback in the Big twelve, and you said,
you know what, no, Well let's play for OT.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
I thought that was very intrigued.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
I know why he didn't do it right, but still,
like you begin to study the behaviors of your coaching.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Staff, you win the toss. Who's trotting out there first? Right?
What's your strength? What are you playing for? BYU?
Speaker 4 (13:55):
In many regard, they've been a full fledged complimentary football team.
And I don't know if anyone's the most elite, but
the defense seems to be the most elite.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
And so maybe you want to play and get your
defense on the field.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Again in OT let them win it rather than having
your offense win it in a two point conversion.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Does that make sense?
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Ye? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Like do you trust your offense?
Speaker 4 (14:18):
In fact, well, Kalaunie did, but he's oc A Rod
and k Pop his especial teams coach, and maybe Jay
Hill right, they said, hey.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
No, let's play for OT. Let's play for OT, and
I think that was the right move.
Speaker 5 (14:30):
I also think part of it is, let's be honest,
two point conversion is not an exact science, man, It's
almost more of a coin flip. I think when you
have evenly matched teams, it's more of a coin flip
than it is in exact science. You may be the
better team but the other guys only have to be
the better team for three seconds. They don't have to
be a better football team than you. They just have
(14:51):
to make the right play. You think about the slant
that Chase Roberts runs over there on the line yard
line that gets batted down, Like again, b will use
the better team, But in that moment, Arizona was the
better team. So I think it makes a lot of
sense not to go for two there. But I'll tell
you what, as soon as they scored that field goal,
I looked over my wife and I said, I think
Kline's gonna go for two. And then Bear puts his
(15:13):
two fingers up and I was like, I don't think
this is the move. And then we see him roll
out the field goal, And honestly, there was a part
of you that was like a little worried for Will
because I'd already We've already seen him missed once.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
There's a lot of pressure.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
Obviously, I was an idiot, because Will Farren is the
coldest man in the state of Utah's ice in his
veins drills it. I found it really interesting though, that
Klania allowed his staff to talk him out of that,
because he's the boss.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
He's the CEO.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
He doesn't have to say no for anybody. He could
just say no, we're doing it. I was really impressed
that Colonie said, now we're the better team. We can
win this thing.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
In notes two, the old age is play for ote
at home, go for the dub in in a way setting,
right and in not so many.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Words, didn't we're Arizona? Was it more of a home
setting with how many fans were atre? It was loud
in there, you know what I mean?
Speaker 5 (16:03):
It was kind of a home environment. Yes, I think
a lot of Arizona fans are like, I don't know
if I want.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
To say this piece that that's even though it was
not it was detrimental that that occurred because b Yu
was rolling. They had all the momentum, so I would
not have wished a rain delay, a storm delay. But
at the end of the game it became more of
a home environment for b Y and it was pretty loud.
The b ou fans, they they showed up, showed out,
(16:32):
no doubt about it. Yeah, all right, they definitely did.
So let's get back to it. This came, this team
overcame a lot of adversity. What does it say about
the character of this team.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Yeah, I'm just proud of of all the guys. And
even when mistakes happened things looked like it was it
was bleak, the guys kept playing and kept I mean,
there's time on the clocks and so we're not going
to give up. And they didn't give up. And it's
easy to coach guys that have you know, have that
belief in it and that faith. And then the leadership
(17:03):
that we saw from the team from the sideline it
was awesome. So obviously there's a lot of things that
correct and you can get better us every week, but
I'm not gonna worry about that. I'm gonna worry about
the praise and for the things that we did well.
And that was the energy, the effort that we saw
from the team, and the belief in not giving up
at the end.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
The character of this team, the culture of this team
is one of grit. There's no entitlement. It's a finishing team.
It's a team that never believes they're out of a game.
They're really a well rounded team from a personality standpoint, right, Like,
(17:43):
you get to know these kids and one of the
biggest issues in modern day star driven sports is entitlements
and ego and narcissism, and it's me me, not we.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
That's not this team.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
And I think they're taking on, obviously, the fullback mentality
that is Kialanie. Kilanie is a team first guy. That's
always who he is, that's always who he has been.
In order to be a fullback, you literally you don't
get any praise. You're like an offensive line and you're
an extension. Very rarely do you get any totes, any catches.
(18:18):
It's a rarity. They are Killanie. They take on the
head coach's personality. So shout out to Killani. Now number three,
you had one touchdown through five red zone trips.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
What was the story there?
Speaker 1 (18:37):
Is there any way you can grow up without throwing interceptions?
That would be really nice too, but it's part of
the game. I get it. I think maybe you give
Arizona credit for the disruption and what they did with
their disguises. I thought danniez Alzo did a great job
of getting his defense ready and kind of confused us
a little bit. But I thought bart was really good
(18:59):
with where he wanted to go with the ball when
it was there, and wasn't trying to force it when
he did, Uh, they made a good play. Make good
plays on it. So keep working with him. But it's
just he's we're midseason now, so the true freshman is
now just freshmen and he's got six games. So there's
a lot of things that we can we can learn from.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
All Right, there you go.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
That's Kalani Satake discussing how how he evaluated bear Bachmeier's
progress and how he played that. Yeah, you don't look Bear.
We knew was going to make mistakes eventually. Typically you're
gonna make those mistakes on the road. Typically gonna make
those mistakes if if it's if you have a wet
ball issue as well. And neither one of the throws,
(19:41):
Neither one of the decisions was a bad decision. It's
not like the throw to the opposite sideline was a
bad throw. It's a little short like many of his
throws have been. And was it easily catchable from a
defensive back standpoint, from a velocity standpoint, yes, to be
able to run the route for somebody control the route
(20:02):
and then turn around, and it was it was a
bread basket.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
He fell right into his lap the defender.
Speaker 4 (20:08):
I was more concerned about Parker Kingston, understanding the trajectory
of the ball and becoming a defender. When you see
an underthrown football like that, you're not concerned at all
about catching it, knock it. You're if you have an
offensive PI, then you get an offensive PI there. So
you gotta you gotta protect your quarterback. And I would
(20:30):
say the same thing goes for even Carson Ryan. You
got to know that you're open and if the if
you you gotta kind of work towards the ball. You
gotta work back. Yeah, when your quarterback is scrambling, you
either work to the sideline yep, okay, or you work back.
You have to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your
(20:51):
quarterback and the conditions. And furthermore, you got to cut
off the defender that you see out of the peripheral vision,
Like you see it's underthrown, like I I put I
put it on on on Bear. He's got to be
able to make those throws when guys are open, no doubt.
And I would like more velocity. I would like a
little bit more behind his ball. But as a as
(21:11):
a wide receiver Titan, you also have to protect your
your your true freshman quarterback and make sure that you
become a defender when you see a ball sputtering, fluttering towards.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
You, I think I think the first interception, that's their
NFL safety right like that, that guy made a great play.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
The Bear's credit. He wasn't looking when Bear threw the ball. No,
he wasn't.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Bear thought, Hey, if he's not looking, I think I
can squeeze this one in there. Obviously he was wrong,
but he knew that the defender wasn't look, and.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
That's why he threw the ball. And he just turned
around like now, I said, hell of a play. I
lily clapped and said salute Cap.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
The second one I'm with Ben like and you see
this from the greatest you know, some of the greatest
Titans in the NFL. You hear from the George Kittles,
even you know, otherwide receivers. It doesn't matter Bukunakua does this.
You gotta, like you said, work sideline, the sideline back.
You can't stay there if you're I mean that helps
DB's You played dB bent When guy scrambling and he throws,
especially after a high snap, you know that happens in
(22:04):
that regard. And again you've seen this now twice in
three games, you've seen Bruce have a high snap. You know,
he had it in the Colorado game. Now you have
it in the Western excuse me, the Arizona game on
the road. I've seen two data points. If it happens again,
I'm gonna start to be concerned, like, you gotta have
better snap, you know, getting the ball there him and
they put a lot of work in, but we're starting
(22:25):
to see that from your center. You can't have those, right,
especially in those critical moments.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
And I shot at the Bear because he saved it.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Again did give it away, but again that interception doesn't
hurt you too bad, right because it was all the
way down I felt like at the end well.
Speaker 5 (22:40):
And this interception was at the end of half, so exactly,
so it's like okay again.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Again, there's a difference from the Jake rets. I've turned
it to the Bears. They're not killing you compared to
what they were. Yes, they might take points off the boards,
but where they're happening, it's better than Okay, I turn
the ball over them on one yard line and then
again a ninety nine.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Yard bay so West Virginia turn exactly.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
That's what I'm saying compared to that, Like, I think
that's the difference of turnovers are happening, it's a part
of the game, but they're not giving the opponent's points.
When you go and you look at what they had
to points off turnovers, they bear turned over twice, only
got seven, right compared to Jake's.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Jake was given the opposition way more.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
Let's get back to the sound bites of Killane post game.
What do you attribute maintaining the sideline energy to.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
Well, honestly, last week when we when we won the game,
it was kind of a weird feeling in the West
Virginia game. And and then K Pop actually made a
good point. And when I allow K Pop and Jay
and a Rob to speak to the team, and k
Pop asked, he actually showed some clips of the West
Virginia game where we made plays. Parker on the screen
(23:44):
going all the way down for a touchdown and the
sideline just a little bit dead. You know, it's like
not even celebrating the energy and chases, the big big catch,
the ady yarder, not a lot of it was dead.
And so, like you know, he pointed that out and
it was actually eye opening. It embarrassing for me to
watch because I was one of those I don't know
if we just just want to be spectators, but we
(24:05):
got to get involved in the game, and that means
create energy, and I thought I appreciate K Pop being
able to see that and talk about it and show
it visually to our players, and then our guys just
fed off. I think even when we were in here
on the delay, the guys who were upbeat and happy,
I had I just like try to get them calmed
down because they're having so much fun.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
You know.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
It's just like we just talked about enjoying every part
of the not worry about the end result. Just just
enjoy the time that we have to play in this game.
Let's make the most out of the sixty minutes. I
think was kind of what we were talking about, and
we ended up earning more time and played double overtime. Obviously,
I'd like to take care of the game earlier than that,
but it was really fun. I just felt like it
(24:44):
was kind of needed this win. We needed this type
of game. It was a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (24:47):
Though once again K Pop stepping in this is something
that I will say that I thought bronklemannheal did a
really nice job of when he was a head coach
at BYU in at Virginia. It's a team first mentality.
It's no where you go, it's not about me, it's
about we. Like, you better be celebrating for your teammates.
(25:08):
I've seen it where backups, backup quarterbacks, backup key players
get benched and they're no longer involved in the sideline.
They're over there pouting, they're over there moping. They got
bench either due to you know, poor play, maybe they
got injured, and there's over there like nah, it's like,
I'm not into it anymore. I'm not playing. That's not
(25:29):
that's not how you win championships. It's very difficult to
win championship unless you have buy in. So that's a
cultural element that I want to highlight with this team
once again. And that energy needs to be even like
going back and watching like Press and Rex up the sideline.
Oh they were hyped and granted it was early, but
you want that energy sustain throughout your feed off of that.
(25:51):
It's it's a very positive vibe there on the sideline,
and you got to show love to your brethren, right,
That's a that's a really key component component to continuing
to win, especially as the schedule gets even tougher.
Speaker 5 (26:04):
And if you listen and we'll hear a little bit more,
but they're celebrating and you can hear it in the background.
And somebody asked that in media availability the last week, saying, hey,
like after the West Virginia game, we didn't really hear
the same level of celebration and living it up as
we did after Colorado. You're hearing it now as after
(26:26):
this game and during Kline's mediavailability. As we continue to
go through, you'll hear the celebration in the background. These
guys are pumped.

Ronald the three Man Weaver by my side bred always
bringing the hammer Hammertime show in the studio as well.
One of the things I was impressed by in this
game versus Joe A and I actually penned a piece
KSL dot com prior to kickoff the day of I said,
look this this running game has been impressed. If there
was one thing that Aaron Roderick was most adamant about
(29:04):
leading up to this season was the run game.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
And I think we've seen that. I think we've seen
that BYU's running.
Speaker 4 (29:10):
Attack with LJ and Bear and the wide receivers, ultimately
with Chuck Yard who plays with that Tornado reverse and
some of the Jets, M Sam.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Vanderhar and.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
He's this is the second game in a row where
he has had as many or more carries as RB two.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Can we play the second game in a row.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
So I'm saying, so it's a it's definitely a one
to two punch, but it has been committee like approach
because of like the receivers getting involved. Right, Seventeen rushing
touchdowns on the season, Yeah, a lot of rushing yards.
And and once again BYU's rushing attack was impressive over
two hundred and sixty yards. And that Arizona defense they
(29:51):
hadn't given up a passing touchdown yet. BYU got it
in the first quarter with a connection from bear Bachmei
to Parker Kingston on a deep post and it was
beautifully done.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
It was beautifully executed.
Speaker 4 (30:03):
And then they tallied one hundred and fifty more yards
of rushing on the ground than any other team that
U of A has.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Faced all season long.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
Impressive work by the offensive line, tight ends and obviously
LJ and bear Bachmeier. So let's get back into the
sound here from Kolonie Shataki in the post game, he
discusses LJ. Martin he had twenty five carries. What does
it say about him that you can lean on him
like that?
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Yeah, I mean he's he's durable and he's tough, and
so we know we can do that. And I think
when we get into into where we need him to
show up and run the ball. He's going to do
it for us, and I just like that the playbook
was open for a Rod to call whatever you wanted.
And I'm glad the defense got the ball back for
us early so that so he can actually go to
the run game with Bear and LJ. Even with the
(30:56):
two minutes left, I just didn't see any panic And
I like the composed that a Rod had and the
offensive staff had during that whole We practice it all
the time, so it was kind of I know people
are getting a little nervous, but I mean we scored
with what nineteen twenty seconds left, and so we had
some seconds to spare. But I just like that that
we knew exactly what we wanted to accomplish and how
(31:17):
he wanted to get it done.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
You can lean on him, There's no doubt about it.
I'm sure Elgier was pretty gas this game, pretty gas.
But you know, everyone's like, hey, we got to run
him more. Yeah, yeah, I would like to run him more.
But like, how many touches is too many?
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Like you know what I mean, thirty is probably too many.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
I mean.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Twenty five thirty, the twenty five thirty.
Speaker 4 (31:43):
Granted he did him how many I don't know how
many tots he got in in in the doublet but
you get into twenty plus you're a bell cow back.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
There's no doubt.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
In regulation, twenty five is probably the cap I would
say for most running backs unless you know you're you're
I mean, you're exposing your guys to injury, right, you
don't want to do it at like, I'll give you
an example. Okay, let me give you an example of
maybe where too many totes is too many?
Speaker 2 (32:19):
I want to say, Luke Staley, Sorry was it? What
do you do?
Speaker 4 (32:24):
So we had twenty three in regulation and then he
had two in overtime in two thousand and one. B
why you had the dok Walker Award winner Luke Staley
on their team?
Speaker 2 (32:33):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (32:35):
And if you pull up Luke Staley's game log, you're
gonna see some some great games from him.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
Obviously that season it was insane.
Speaker 4 (32:45):
Eventually, though, at the end of the year, he got
injured versus I want to say Mississippi State, and so
he didn't have him in the final two games, the
bowl game or the final regular season game. That's the
last thing you want, right now right, if you give
them too many totes, you have to do it in moderation,
but you also have to balance that out. You got
to find a way to win. So I don't know you,
(33:08):
did you feel like LJ should have been relied upon
even more in this game?
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Should he have gotten more toats in this game?
Speaker 5 (33:17):
There was a part of me during that second half
that felt like, should we be given the ball to ljmore?
But then clearly you go up back and look at
the stat sheet and you're like, okay, no, he touched
the ball enough.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Here's the wild stat for you. Okay, LJ.
Speaker 5 (33:30):
Martin touched the ball a total of twenty six times
because he had one catch and he had twenty five carries.
Bear Bachmeyer had twenty nine passing attempts.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
LJ.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
Martin rush for one hundred and sixty two yards. Bear
threw for one hundred and seventy two yards. So, and
obviously that's not including Bear's accounting in the run game,
but just LJ. Martin is essentially doing as much in
the run game as Bear Bachmeier is doing in the
pass game. They had essentially the same carries to throws,
(34:02):
which to me is just insane. It just kind of
says to every team that bo you have to play
the rest of the season. Hey, they pretty much just
run the offense through these two guys. And that's not
a shot at by U, that's a statistical fact.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Well, I want some motivation for a certain guy on offense. Now, Granted,
I want to preface this because the fans are gonna
come from me. People are gonna get mad. You're gonna
get text messages about this, So I want to preface
what I say before their motivation. And Brett knows what
I'm about to say, and I gave you a little
bit of a hint to It was because of the
defense Arizona's running.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
If you're gonna run a through three five, they're gonna
run you right up out of it.
Speaker 4 (34:34):
And they did try to convert over to a four
to two five absolutely as well. They were kind of saying, hey,
run the ball right, let's see if we can stop
it too. And then then they then they changed that
and they tried to slow down Ba's run game and
forced beare bachmight to pass. But initially they were kind
of they were kind of allowing it and they were
maybe implementing some pressures along the way. Some run pressures
(34:57):
to to stop the rush game, but they couldn't. They
couldn't stop it all all game long.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
It seemed, well, that happens when the guy who's not
wide receiver number one right now, and I say this
for motivation. I know Chase is wide receiver number one,
but right now he's not this motivation. Ope, hehears me.
When you have two receptions for twenty five yards. Now,
he put on great tape last week against West Virginia,
so they probably had him circled on the scouting report
of watch out for number two, rightfully. So, but when
(35:24):
you have that, when you have to drop on third down,
when you're targeted six times, what are we talking about?
Like this is the guy that shows up in the
biggest moments, and that was kind of non existent. So
when you're relying on and granted Parker's Parker, right, but
five for one, seventeen to one, tub Parker's the one
that's doing it all. And like Chase was a non fact.
He did draw the PI, but you need the NFL
(35:46):
aspirations got to do that. And I went back and
I looked, and Carson deserves some accountability as well, dropping
the ball way too much. Chase dropped the ball against
Stanford in the Colorado game and now the Arizona game,
and then I know the one in over time he
hits the guy with the nice double movie goes right
through his hands. He does have to come down with that,
but that is affecting the past game and why they
(36:08):
have to run in so much.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Because of that, you need him to step up.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
And I said that for motivation of right now that
I do feel that Parker's playing just a little bit
better than Chase to tabby because you can utilize him in.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
The run game two.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
But you need Deuce to step up this weekend on Saturday.
You need him to show up and show out because
he's the leader in that room. And that's the guy
you've been raving about. That was a guy that they
say is all big twelve. So some motivation for Chase.
But I think when Chase is not able to get loose,
that does affect I think the play call in when
Carson is dropping past this, you have to then put
(36:39):
more of the load on LJ.
Speaker 4 (36:41):
Yeah, Chase wasn't able to get off that single coverage
little stop and go in the first OT ball went
through his hands. Those are those are plays that you
expect an NFL Calber receiver. They make, get off, create
separation and then if the ball does hit your hands.
I know there was hand fighting. I know you could
have called maybe a defensive hold. You got to make
(37:03):
sure you win those. And and Parker, you know, for
the most part, has He's creating a lot of separation with.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
His speed, his quickness, his versatility.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
So shout out to Parker, but you do need Chase
to elevate his game or find somebody else that's going
to elevate their game right to create separation. A couple
last things here from Kilani. Did you think the fake
punt decision changed the momentum of the game?
Speaker 1 (37:27):
How short were we two yards of it? Three yards?
Three yards? Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have let them let
us do it. Maybe should have called that. Maybe good
for seven, But I don't know if it was our
ossie punter. Can you know if we can rely on
him as much as we can with the Chase, you know,
Chase Roberts and l J. Martin to make plays, but
he was really hard on himself, you know, for not
(37:49):
getting the first down. I have to watch it off film.
But yeah, maybe a little too aggressive for me, but
that's kind of my nature, you know what I mean.
So I'm gonna when we see it us kpop and
when we see things, don't practice it if you're not
going to run in the game. So when we practice it,
we expect to do it and hop the guys executed well.
I think Arizona just made the play big deal?
Speaker 2 (38:11):
Are not a big deal going for it there? Do
you think, gentlemen, I don't love it. Yeah, I didn't
love it either, I'll be honest, but I understand why
though I get I do get it.
Speaker 5 (38:21):
I think if you're going to run it because I
think it was what fourth and seven or fourth like,
it wasn't like it was close, and you send it
all the way back to your punter, which basically means
he's running like fifty to twenty yards just to get
it back again. If it's a four yard difference and
you're sitting at four, fourth and three, then I'm here
for it.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
But at that position, I don't love it. But here's
what I do love.
Speaker 5 (38:42):
I love that Kilani can keep his nature but also
be willing to say, hey, you know what that maybe
wasn't the best call. Like he's not doubling down, he's saying,
I want to do the smartest thing.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
This is my nature.
Speaker 5 (38:56):
That wasn't necessarily the best decision, But you know what,
there's gonna be plenty of other times where Kialanie's nature
he's gonna do something to the rest of us say please,
don't do that, and the rest of us are all.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Going to be wrong.
Speaker 5 (39:07):
So I'm grateful for a Kialani that trust his staff
and a Kilani that you know what, it didn't work,
and now he's saying, Okay, yeah, looking back, probably wasn't
a better decision, but you know what.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
We'll learn from it.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
I'll say this much over the last two years, three years,
with how many fake field goals, how many fake punts
that b Way's employeed like the film, because you you
you pretty much have like your coaching staff intact.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
So the preparation that's needed to be allocated.
Speaker 4 (39:34):
If you're a special teams uh and defensive like you know,
defensive coordinator, you're like, oh my gosh, we got to
prepare for all these different fakes because it's the same
name freaking coaching staff, and that slows down Rushes. That's
it just it adds another layer of development that I like.
I like the fact that that that that that has
(39:55):
occurred so often and Bway has been extremely effective in
these fake field goals punt situation for the.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Words of Edna Mo from The Incredibles, just for this week,
no capes, no fix.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
I do think that K pop has probably reinvigorated Kilanie's
aggressive nature. How good Hespann like, Kilani looks so good
in the K pop era when going for it on
fourth down, on fake punt situations, fake field goal situations.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
And that's to say, Utah's gonna be aware. That's what
say this week. It's like when you're winning in blackjack
over and over and.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
Over again, you're not gonna get Yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
You also have to have great athletes, though, to be
able to run.
Speaker 5 (40:42):
These fotball players and Sam Vanderharan will fare and deserve
a lot of credit for their athletics.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Look a special teamers are athletes too. They are.
Speaker 3 (40:50):
Then I'll say this, they missed a hole because the
guy is like holding the tackle into Sam. I kind
of kind of wish that he held him going out
of balance and they didn't throw the flax Sam would
have picked it up. If they don't make that tackle,
Sam gets the first he got blocked in, same he
got blocked into Sam. So if I'm kind of like man,
I actually wish you'd have blocked Hi out of bounced.
No flag would have been thrown because they didn't throw
it in. Sam actually would have got the first down anyway.
Speaker 4 (41:12):
Going back to the going for two situations at the
end of regulation, Kilanie, did your staff talk to you
about going for two?
Speaker 1 (41:21):
I think the defensies wanted to play ball, like they
felt like they were going to be able to get
to and disrupt noise, timing and stuff to run and
then that that didn't look great in the first overtime
because you know they were marching down. But but you
have to trust your guys, man, And I just wanted
to end it in one play and just be like,
let's just end it and go home.
Speaker 4 (41:40):
And you know, but.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
I'm always open to reason and open to argument, So
this is not just all my decisions. I'm I'm gonna
check with our players, see what they want to do,
and check with our coaches. And so that's what we
decided to do, and if it works, I'll be happy.
If it doesn't work, I'll blame somebody else.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
His tongue in cheek there, I'll bring somebody else.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Oh man, a couple of last things from Killani. But hey,
he's open to reason, he's open for debate. But yeah,
he probably want to go for two there. He's an
aggressive play caller. What is it like having a quarterback
you can lean on so heavily in the ground game?
Speaker 1 (42:14):
Yeah, I mean we know the toff and he can run.
I don't know how many runs he had, Yes, that's
kind of a lot, but but he can handle it
and and LG can handle his twenty five runs too,
So we'll be we'll be good there. I was really
proud of pressing stepping in and making plays and I
(42:35):
mean he he had that one screen that went for
a while, and so we feel like we had great talent.
But when we came down to time to make a play,
we needed we needed LJ and we needed bear to
and sometimes you're gonna have to ask better run the ball.
That's he's okay with it.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Yeah, yeah, Hey, he's okay with it. You know.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
It's kind of like that that whole social media meme
phenomenon where it's like you see a player, right, it's
like Tim Tebow and you and then you get to
the squinty eye guy and then it turns into.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
Bear Boxy Maguire Spider.
Speaker 4 (43:05):
Yeah, then Toby MC when he puts his glasses on.
Speaker 2 (43:08):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
That's what we're seeing right now with how many toads
h that Bear Bachmeer is getting in the run game.
But whatever it takes, I guess to get that victory.
And he's durable. I mean, he's big. As the commentators
mentioned like he may have come in to camp at
two twenty, No way, he's two twenty right now, he's
two thirty five. As he told us in his interview.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
That's what I was saying.
Speaker 3 (43:32):
When I keep hearing this to stop this bull jove,
I'm like, I'm one of these days I'm gonna get
kicked out of practice and I'd be allowed back for
maybe a little bit. I might get suspended. I'm gonna
bring a skill, Hey, bear step on this. I just
I said it as a joke, but a big serious
in that regard. He's he's two thirty, two thirty five
the centaur.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
Let's get into Will Farren conversation on Will Farren's field goal.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
The tempo seems slow?
Speaker 1 (43:59):
Was that?
Speaker 4 (44:00):
And that was that final field goal right towards the end?
It seems slow?
Speaker 2 (44:04):
Was that by design?
Speaker 1 (44:07):
No, we wanted to be efficient with our plays, you know,
and it was it was getting kind of loud. We
just want to make sure we communicated. We also didn't
want to show panic. I mean, there's plenty of time left.
We felt like the defense could get a stop for
us and get the ball back for us, and so,
I mean, the one thing you don't want to do
is panic, and they show that. You need to, you know,
just go as fast as you can. We felt good
(44:27):
with the timing and Aero felt good about it. If
I trust him and trust our offensive coaches, and it
worked out in our favor.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (44:35):
Look, BYU fans, we're looking at the clock. It's right
there in front of us, you know, we're looking at timeouts,
we're looking at tempo, and we're like, we're gonna miss this.
Speaker 2 (44:44):
We don't have enough time.
Speaker 4 (44:46):
And the way you did so, you look, time management
is key. As b what you messed up on time
management in the past, offensively one they didn't mess up
this time. It all worked out so what's to criticize now,
how would you evaluate the play from your secondary tonight
versus you avean Nofa Fieda arguably the best quarterback in
(45:06):
the Big twelve.
Speaker 1 (45:07):
Yeah, those guys played great and Tavian did great too.
I mean, this is a talented offense that that Arizona
has and harder playing man coverage, and our guys are
down for it, you know. So, I'm really proud of
the way they made plays and they just I mean,
we had those guys just kept playing and there was
a lot of deep routes and things like that. And
those guys Jenell Gilford and Jay Hill did an amazing
(45:30):
job with their coaches and get these guys ready for them.
Speaker 4 (45:33):
Ben highlighting the secondary, highlighting Tavian bees Lee as well.
There was a lot of criticism heaped on Tavan during
the game from the from the fans.
Speaker 3 (45:43):
I'll let that go. You're gonna get beat as a dB.
Those things happen. We'll let Tavan slide. Ben, You'll have
to shed some light, like a certain church that you said,
I've received more of that on an issue. I need
you to shed light. I need to say that because
what happened on that Jayden dunlap play. He just looked
like he stopped running.
Speaker 5 (45:59):
To me, can I ask okay, So let me ask
you a question, because, as I understand it, in a
situation like that, you're not necessarily looking for the ball.
You're watching the hands correct and when the hands go
up is when you start to play.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
Well, I'll go even further than that.
Speaker 4 (46:12):
So when you're run off as a defensive back on
multiple plays and it looks and feels similar to that,
so running off could be a run play, could be
a pass play, but he's running you off on a
vertical route, so you could be impressed. Man, you could
be in zone coverage, but you're running hip to hit
(46:32):
with him, and it kind of feels like he's just
running you off. So sometimes you'll see defensive backs just
misread body language and it's actually a route ough. So
I don't know if that was the case. But he
did slow down, which could lead me to only Drayden
can answer the question, of course a right on as
(46:53):
to what he was thinking and why he slowed down
and stopped. But I think when you've been run off
as many times as sometimes you are run off, and
like I said, sometimes it's wrong because there's an intermediate
route behind you, like you know, the tight end or
the slot receivers running like an eight ten yard out
towards the sideline, and that guy's just clearing you out.
(47:16):
Sometimes you get into the motive like, Okay, I'll just
slow down because then I'm gonna look back and see
if the ball was thrown behind me, so I can
get in on a play. And I've seen guys make
plays that way actually, like slowing down and kind of
getting getting back into the play. But when in doubt,
if you don't have a route truly controlled, and if
(47:37):
you're not reading the body language correctly, and that's ultimately
what we're talking about here, if you can't see the ball,
and it's very difficult. You're running right, you're running backwards,
you're controlling the route, right. Just imagine yourself there, you're
running next to the wide receiver. When you turn around,
you don't necessarily see the ball floating in your line
(47:58):
of sight. That ball's coming over the top more often
than not, and so you kind of have to, like
I tell my defensive bags that I coached up like
after practice, you should really be working your core elasticity
your neck elasticity so that your range of motion. Literally
you should be able to run forward, okay, staying square
(48:20):
and be able to turn your entire body almost the
opposite direction, so you can get up and look right
and get eyes on the football and like he just
kind of turned and he's just like he's just slowed down.
So at that point the ball had already gone on. Yeah,
the balls are he can't even yeah, track it. But
when in doubt, you keep running with your receiver and
you read body language through the entirety of the play
(48:40):
till you hear the whistle.
Speaker 2 (48:42):
And that's what you do.
Speaker 4 (48:43):
And when when the hands flash, it's a it's not
an immediate grasp, it's a one one thousand two, and
you try to Typically you try to grab the dominant
hand or the closest arm. You just one hook typically,
so there's one of two ways. Sometimes you can come
up under it and you just hope that you pop
(49:03):
it out. You can put your hands like right in
the basket, but sometimes you miss. I typically teach a
one hook technique where you grasp, you make him catch
it with one hand, you secure the tackle with the
opposite hand, and then you one hook it with the
with the the closest arm or the dominant arm. That's ideally,
(49:24):
and you see it a lot like how many wide
receivers do you see catch the ball one handed with
left with the left hand just over like your you know,
your your anecdotal experience. How often do you like one
handed grab left handed Megatron who beating up to Chicago Bears?
But rarely it's typically right hand, even though Jell beckhams
you like, you know what I mean, Like the odelse
(49:46):
cowboy right handlation is right handed, so they tend to
gravitate to with their right hand. So if you can,
it's the right hand that you grasp for, because very
few people can really catch it one handed with the
left arm, left hand unless they're just monsters. Yeah, or
it's the closest one in that particular situation, it's gonna
(50:06):
be the left arm or the right arm, because it's
right there and he's got to catch it with his
left handed secured the tackle. Well, the reason why I
brought it up, Jason would Jaden was benched affter that. Well,
that's why he was benched because of that. Not a
good look, right, you know for him.
Speaker 3 (50:18):
And there's guy I know he wants that one back
to if you were to ask him, but I bring
it up because he looked like he was running with
him the whole time, and where he caught the ball
Ben and wors thrown. I feel like if Jayden would
have kept pushing and staying with the route, he might
would have pushed him out of bounce. Yeah you know,
so that's why I was like what happened because it
looked like he had pretty good coverage until then. We know,
you get a half a second to make a decision
(50:38):
in these sports because these players are so elite.
Speaker 2 (50:40):
But that was crazy.
Speaker 3 (50:41):
But the overall point of that I wanted to bring
up is Trey Alexander, Evan Johnson, Marie Bomba, Moriy are
his money that game. I'm gonna get Morey's credit what
I saw for Mori's phenomenal smacking dudes getting the pass
break and Morey really balled out that game. And I
think we can now say after seeing that Byu has
three dudes, and those three dudes, if you try to
throw on them, it ain't gonna work. Trey had good coverage.
(51:03):
Like I love how Trey was getting his head around Ben.
Like again, people in the press box and Arizona fence.
It's passing de fance. No, it's not like Trey was
playing phenomenal coverage.
Speaker 4 (51:12):
Shout out to those defensive backs and U. I felt
bad for Tavon. He was to put in a tough
position trying to guard in Man Free on that slot
receiver on a corner route that was perfectly thrown. Tough, tough,
tough break sometimes better, and in my opinion, it was
a better play call than what we had called and
a better matchup than than we ideally would have read.
Speaker 2 (51:33):
All to a couple last.
Speaker 4 (51:34):
Things, as we continue down the line of question with Kilanie,
how would you evaluate the play?
Speaker 2 (51:39):
Excuse me?
Speaker 4 (51:40):
What kind of momentum does this give you heading into
a rivalry week.
Speaker 1 (51:45):
Yeah, we're gonna have fun with this and then keep
hopefully keep the momentum running till next week. But it's
gonna be back to hard work on Monday and focus
on our opponent and we'll do that on when that happens.
Right now, I want our guys to enjoy it and
just kind of rather from the victory. I think it's
it'd be foolish of us to just like all of
a sudden, just turn around, just say hey, let's get
(52:05):
focused on the next one, even even if it's an
arrival game. I think we go through the process, we
do things in order. I think we'll feel good about,
you know, about the way we show up when it
happens next.
Speaker 4 (52:15):
