Speaker 2 (00:17):
Welcome back to Cougar Sports Here one O, three, nine
and nine three ESPN. The fan run up the three
man weave of Brett always bringing the hammer by my side,
effort to get Anson wine to the former BYU basketball
guard on the line. U here momentarily might have them
call into the station as well, Brett. Until then, we'll
keep discussing. I want to ask you this. I don't
(00:38):
know if I asked you this, and this is it
is our basketball, I guess. Question of the day. What
is the biggest thing in this team has accomplished through
non conference play? Oh?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
The biggest thing BYU basketball has accomplished through non conference play?
I mean, I think the big one is aj Debonza
has then as advertised, which some people might not think
is a big deal, but I do because there's no
guarantees with the world we live in college basketball, like
(01:10):
not everybody automatically pans out when they get.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
To the next level.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
So I think that's number one in terms of like
things I needed to see, and we did see a
j Dea Botsa really did pan out. The other thing
is BYU in a non conference schedule that's stronger than
it's been in previous years, even though people like Seth
Davis don't think it's that tough. You be Villanova, You're
two points away from beating the number three team in
(01:38):
the country in Yukon. You whoop up on Wisconsin, You
beat Miami, you beat Damon, you beat Dayton, you beat Clemson.
Like the again, you lost one game in non conference
and the only game you lost was to Yukon, was
to Hurley and Crew, was to a team who's going
to be perennially running through the NCED tournament year after
(02:01):
year after year. So I think when we talked a
lot about coming into the season, what is this non
conference schedule going to do for this BYU basketball team.
All the games they they wanted to win in terms
of upper level competition better than the WCC days, they
won all of those games and were very competitive in
a game against Yukon that Franklin was early in the
(02:23):
season of the team maybe wasn't gelled together as much
as they could have been. So I think the number
one thing that I've seen from this bou basketball team
and what they've accomplished is really dominating the non conference
schedule the way they should.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, definitely they've dominated the non conference schedule as well.
Let's talk with a guy that knows a lot about
the non conference schedule. He knows about you know, those
those WCC times in Mountain West times as well. We
got former BAU basketball great Anson Winder on the line. Brother,
Thanks for joining us today, Mayor Christmas and happy holidays
to the family.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Thank you for having me Mary, Christmas to you as
well as for being on. There's a lot to celebrate,
a lot to be happy for, especially if you're a
BAU fan right.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Now, definitely if you're a BAU fan, but we'll talk
by you in a second, but I want to celebrate
and show some love to you. Please get us caught
up on life house, the family been and then give
us an update on Wall Sash and how you guys
have been this season so far.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
Oh man, I appreciate you giving me the Florida to
talk about our squad. I mean, first and foremost, the
family is doing well. You know, this is always a
fun time of year. I'm a Vegas boy, so usually
you know, we're not battling snow or anything like that,
and we're usually dealing with some warmer temperatures this time
of year. So I'll be down in Vegas for the holidays,
just spending time with the family and really looking forward
(03:39):
to it. It should be a fun, fun week, fun
holiday season. As far as part as the team goes,
it's been a fun year.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Man.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
It's it every year very much.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
So.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Like at the college level, with the transfer portals, there's
somewhat of a portal in high school as well, so
we've had to adjust. We brought in basically a whole
new team. We had three returners, but outside of that,
we had a whole new group of guys that came
in and joined our team at whilst. That's this year,
and it's been fun. It's been fun watching them compete.
It's been fun watching them grow together and build that
(04:11):
team chemistry. Uh, you know, we get better and better
every game. As it stands right now, we're seven and three.
Last I checked, we were number twenty one in the
country and hoping to continue to climb that ladder. We'll
have a lot of opportunities with the remainder of our
season to play against some of the best teams and
best players in the country. Those are the likes of
(04:32):
you know, Mount verd and Oak Hill Academy, Long Island,
Lutheran IMG of course, just some of those perennial powerhouses
of the prep school world. So yeah, we're just we're
taking in a day at a time, trying to grow
and develop and yeah, and let the chips flow where
they may.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Hey, anytime you got you know, the great Anderson Wine
and there Paul Peterson coaching. Hey, I expect that team
to you know, make waves. They develop talent the likes
of the Richie Sounders, the kab kid is the first
Ros even other Big twelve you know as Isaiah Harwell
planning it there. You know on Houston. You guys have
done a phenomenal job. So I have to ask you
who are the prospects that we need to be keeping
(05:09):
our eye on this season? Anson, Oh, absolutely, So.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
We have three committed players on our team right now
that I think will really turn heads when they give
a college next year and in years to come, we'll
start with Mariano Mansel. He's he's a six or four
guard out of the state of Detroit or out of
the city of Detroit, Michigan. He is he's headed to
steven F. Austin next year. He actually led our league
(05:35):
in scoring last year with one of the highest three
part percentages. So I think I expect him to go
to the next level and really light it up, expand
his game, and really contribute to a lot of wins
at steven F.
Speaker 6 (05:45):
Austin.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Next up is our point guard six y five guard
out of Seattle, Washington, by the name of Coachrell Harmon.
He's actually committed to the University of Creighton and so
he'll be a freshman at Creighton next year and we'll
compete for hopefully starting minutes or minutes at the point
guard position. And he's just a wiry Jamal Crawford type
(06:07):
guard that's just a creative score and an aggressive playmaker
that's really really good at getting downhill and finding others
and creating for others. So we've been lucky to have
control with us this year. And then lastly, we have
a Yukon commit by the name of Junior County. He's
actually a Utah, Utah kid. He was raised in Ireland,
(06:28):
but we've been lucky enough to have him with our
program the last two years. And he's a six to
six guard shooting guard that's just physical. He's a rugged player.
He plays hard. I think his biggest skill is just
his ability to just affect the game on both ends
of the floor. He's probably our best defender as well
as our i think our second leading scorer, and he's
(06:50):
one of our primary ball handlers and playmakers. So we
lean on him heavily to contribute on a night in
a night out basis. And I expect him to have
a great career at YOU and compete for a ton
of minutes as a freshman next year under coach Early.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Fast, rising four star guards Junior County the number forty
third recruit in the twenty twenty six Sports Center Next
one hundred. So that kid is a problem, no doubt.
I've seen his tape. Don't want to get caught on
a highlight. Speaking of tape, I know you are a
guy that likes to watch. I'm serious, I'm not a kid.
Look every time I play pickup and I see these
(07:25):
old men make moves or something, I just like, I
don't want to get embarrassed at church ball yet alone.
If you had to play at the highest level, so
you've ransom peoples, you know how it'd be. I'm not
trying to get ankles taken exactly.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
I understand. I get it, I get it. I don't
want to be anyone highlight tape. I don't want to
be embarrassed, none of that.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
None of that. Well, Pacific got embarrassed. You know all
about Pacific BYU clapped him ninety three to fifty seven.
What did it feel like the finally, you know, see
By you just dominate the old wccfo it was a tailor,
like four halfs. I felt like though ansid it was
up and down. The roller coaster didn't really start off
the way if you look at the box score, it's
a blowout. But that game definitely was up and down
(08:00):
for sure. But what did you like about seeing By
you take down an old opponent that you're familiar with.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
I mean, it's it's funny, right because you mentioned that
game being so up and down, and that was the
consistency of my time in the WCC. It's in like
every team I was on, no matter how talented or
how skilled we were. We would go on the road
to some of the WCC arena as, arenas and gyms
and we would struggle, you know, And it's just I
think it's a credit to the coaches that are in
the WCC, the players that they recruit, just how prepared
(08:29):
they are, right. I think every WCC team, you know,
when BAU was in Matt Conference, knew that there were
three big games that you had to circle on your calendar.
You had to circle Gonzaga, of course, you had to
circle Saint Mary's, and then you had to circle BYU.
And so those were all games that I think the
WCC teams got up for and we're looking for ways
to kind of make their season, and getting wins against
(08:51):
those three teams would really make your season. So I
wasn't surprised to see Pacific or Pacific put up a
fight against against by U. I knew towards the end,
I think the skill and the overall just scheme of
the game would work in BYU's favor. But I wasn't surprised,
you know. I think just a credit to coach Young
and the way that he prepares those guys on a
(09:13):
daily basis. It seems like, you know, whether the BAU
has a slow start or not, they're a great second
half team and they always figure out a way to
you know, get stops and consecutively and then find ways
to create on offense with so much firepower that they have,
you know, I'm not surprised that they're scoring in the
seventies and eighties consistently like this. They're getting huge contributions
(09:36):
from their big three and also their their role guys
are also stepping into making big plays. So I'm not
surprised with some of the wins that we're seeing.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Obviously, AJ had the thirty point triple double, and we
know what he is going to be a top two
pick on down in the draft. But I want to
talk about a guy that you've seen closely, up close
and personal, the Richie Saunders, the top King hand man.
It's got like fifty five nicknames. People dress up us
for following rightfully. So that guy has benefited so much
from those guys. I mean, he is so wide open
(10:06):
and you honestly sometimes forget about him and then he
hits a three and you look up like he had
a casual And I'm serious, he had a casual twenty
one last night, you know, twenty two, and it's because
of AJ. But the b YU, I feel like the
way to win a Final four is because of that
attention drawn away. Like Richie, I feel like he's going
to hit one hundred threes this year.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Ansom, I have to agree. I mean between the shooting
ability of Richie and AJ, I mean you're throwing Kenard Davis.
I mean those guys you I don't know if I'm
a coach that's preparing for BYU, I don't know who
you try to take, you know, take out of the game, right,
who do you key in on? You know, there's AJ
(10:47):
is gonna you know, he's gonna be who he is
on a nightly basis. He's going to impact the game.
We're gonna regardless of if he's scoring or if he's playmaking.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
Right.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
But like you said, you have shooters that are consistent
knockdown shooters. You know Richie Saunders, Robert Wrights, you know
he's perfecting his shot. Kenard Davis is a great shooter
as well. I mean, there's just so much firepower on
the floor.
Speaker 6 (11:09):
You know.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
That's why I think we see b YU in games
with such a high assist count, but also with guys
multiple players and double digits, because the firepower is just
it's scary. It's scary, you know when at any point
any one of those guys can go off and have
career nights. And we've seen aj I do it a
couple of times. We've seen Richie do it. But I
wouldn't be surprised if we, you know, we see Keva
(11:30):
have a career night just based off of how you
know the defense and what you know, what offensive opportunities
they give him. And the same with Robert Wright. It's
like he's been pretty quiet offensively, but you know he's
due for, you know, a monster game. So you know,
on any given night, I think what's special about this
team is that someone can explode and have a career night,
(11:51):
and you know it's it's gonna be interesting to see
how these teams in the Big twelve guard by US
as conference gets ready to start.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Yeah, it's definitely gonna be interesting to see how they
guard him, no doubt about it all. As we have
anson winer former by you men's basketball guard on the line,
what does let's talk about Kaba. He had a career
high on blocks against Miami man. He was sitting. Everything
was playing point guard. Duncan messed up a rim, you know,
in Madison Square Garden. I just hate that, you know,
he got he got sick, you know, and that's a
(12:19):
part of it, right, everybody goes through their illness. But
outside of that, CABA's had a phenomenal season. He almost
came close to breaking that career h against cal Baptists.
I needed a few more lobs to be in his vicinity.
Sometimes they just throw it up to the moon because
they say it's not too high, but it definitely can
be too high. I've seen it a few times. But
what have you made of Caba this season and the
development from Chris Burgess. I love what I've seen from
(12:41):
Caba this year same.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
I mean, I've you know, I had the luxury and
the pleasure of coaching Cabo when he was in high school.
So to see where he's come from as a sophomore
to this point as a senior in college has been
It's been nothing short of phenomenal. The kids just see
works hard and you've seen it, right, every year he's
gotten better and better. And it's not just from the
eye test, it's from the stats. You know, all the
stats have improved the year upon year, and he's becomes
(13:06):
just a dominant force. Right. I expect him to be probably,
if not the best and the second best big in
the Big twelve this year. I expect him to continue
to anchor the defense for BYU. And he just creates
so many opportunities, right, if he's blocking shots, he's controlling
the paint, he gets monster rebounds, and he's a lot
of threat. Right, you have to guard him in a
(13:27):
pick and roll action. You can't, you know, if you're
the low man, if you're a defender, right, you can't
just key in on shooters. You have to be be
ready to protect the rim as well, because he rolls
so hard and he's so athletic, and so I've been
very impressed with Kable and I think he's fitting to
this team as a major puzzle piece. He fits nicely,
and he's a guy that just he's just going to
(13:49):
play hard. You know, he's not expecting to get the
ball every possession. He's not expecting to score in double figures. Right,
He's going to do what it needs, whatever needs to
be done to win the game. That could be zero points,
that could be eight rebounds, it could be five blocks,
you know. And so I've just been very pleased with
Cave and I expect him to continue to flourish as
this year goes on.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Yeah, he's definitely gonna flourish. Last couple of things Anson
before we let you go to get to break. We
know your time is valuable, especially this holiday season. Give
me your thoughts to your perspective as a coach, he said,
six' four guards six. Four i've heard the we're not
seeing And Rober wrights a dynamic, guard but kind of
around his height if he'll be, drafted or we're moving
away from the unless You're Steph, curry who's an, anomaly
(14:30):
the greatest shooter That god's ever gifted. Us you're not
seeing the six, two six,' three six foot one guards
at the. Highest level you're seeing, six four sixty five,
six eight.
Speaker 6 (14:39):
Six' nine?
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Why is that shed some might, on That issue because
i'm kind of sad And by that i'm seeing all
of these high level guys pretty much. Just point forward
now there is no traditional Point Guard like chris paul
anymore GOING. In, the nba.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Yeah the game, has, Evolved tremendously right basketball. Gets, on
you right two things that are. Consistent with basketball every
year gets younger and every year. It, Gets taller right
there's more and more taller athlete who are multifaceted in
their skill set to where they can play. Plenty, of
positions right there's a lot of basketball players that we're
(15:16):
seeing in college AND in the nba that you really
can't put them in a position because they can do.
SO many things i think that's that's hurt the traditional
point guard or, traditional shooting guard right because there's there's
a limited space. For SMALLER guards and i was reading
and watching this post online of a trainer just talk,
about you know if you're, a smaller guard how perfect
(15:39):
you have to be on.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
The.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
Basketball court right you have to limit, your your mistakes,
limit your turnovers you have to be willing to hit an,
open shop consistently and you have to be an absolute.
Animal on defense you have to you have to be
an extremely good defender if you're under six two sixty three.
As a GUARD and so i think what we're seeing
is those guards who do make it in are undersized
(16:02):
or have mastered their craft and are very good at
what they do offensively and are also no, slatches, on
defense right they can guard their man and shut down
their man because that's what's going to require. To get
MINUTES and SO i think i don't think it's over for.
THE smaller guards i think there we will still continue
To see more we'll, see YOU others but i think
we're going to see more polished guards COMING to the
(16:24):
nba because that's what it's going to take to have a.
Long standing career.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Thank you for. Shedding that, Light you know i'm over getting,
sad like man my short kings while y'all doing, that
TO them like i need like, me, answer like hey?
We can, ball answer miner? Was the baller don't tell
me that the six two six three six foot. GUYS

oh we'd love to have you guys come in and
give us an opportunity or in, your business here.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
You got to give hi an opportunity to earn Your
Business At. Utah protective films let's get, right. Into it
though let's start with the with, the first thing the.
News from, YESTERDAY you know i received, the text, message
you know saying that you have to take the. Respect, you,
know yeah yeah, yeah he said who said that you
have to take their? Take THEIR respect and i, agree with,
you you know you're the one that. Sit THAT message
(23:15):
but byu versus or to day in the, HOME at
home i think this is a way b why you
gets into.
Speaker 5 (23:20):
THE college man i mean that the reality of college
football is you have these the one, side saying well
they're going to punish you for a bad.
Speaker 6 (23:30):
Loss or a good law let's say what they call
a good.
Speaker 5 (23:33):
Life good loss there's no. GOOD loss loss a win.
Is a win there's not, a bad win and there's
not a good loss. In, my opinion now you got one,
side that's saying let's schedule an easy out of conference
schedule so that we don't worry about.
Speaker 6 (23:50):
HAVING that loss i.
Speaker 5 (23:52):
DISAGREE with it i think you you want to prove
that you should be, in the playoffs then play the
teams and beat the teams and make yourself very very
very apparent that.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
You should be.
Speaker 5 (24:01):
In the playoffs AND that's what I Think this notre
dame GAME Gives b yu and it puts us in, a,
spot where Yeah We beat notre dame and we play
out and went out in our schedule and maybe come
with one loss.
Speaker 6 (24:15):
In the season it puts us in a. Really good.
Speaker 5 (24:18):
SPOT you know i think we have an opportunity with
the players that we have AND with who i feel like,
is coming back that we are going to have a
great opportunity to have another great.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
SEASON next year i think they can. Not even think
i'm very confident that they can. Be NOTED down and
i believe this is going to be a NON conference
game i believe it's going to Be played in september
because they Canceled the.
Speaker 6 (24:37):
Whole october SEVENTEENTH is.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
What i saw oh that's, What, YOU saw okay. I,
didn't See okay, so october seventeenth which is, replacing the game,
the Game game. The cow Game so the cow had
a home. And home canceled DON'T.
Speaker 5 (24:48):
Know Where i. READ october seventeenth i SAW them everything
i see online and.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
If verywell could, be you know but this is important,
because you Know The College, FOOTBALL playoff committee i think
their meetings still during that time where he might be
that might be a, little bit before actually a couple,
of weeks before but it's still good to get that.
Speaker 5 (25:05):
On your resume and we have some great games, ahead of,
that you know with the Baby in. The big twelve So,
We We, Arizona Arizona, state iowa state and we've, got
a good good schedule coming. In next year, that that uh.
Some great, OPPORTUNITIES so hey I wanted to i wanted.
To Say something so ben decided to use one of
(25:26):
my Quotes. On his, instagram Oh no so i'm not
wanting to sit back, and START responding but i did
a little bit, And you know i'll tell THE people
that i responded TO that that i probably erased a
response like six or SEVEN times before i made it
nice and.
Speaker 6 (25:43):
Casual and UH.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
But but i, WILL say this a lot of the
a lot of the complaints are on there is That our, a,
Ron stuff Right and so i'd want to address it just,
for ONE minute all i. Want to say and and
some of the comments were he's so predictable sitting on
MY couch and i.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Don't don't don't, get me started don't.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
GET me started i can guess the play. Before it
comes so let me. Tell you this there is absolutely
no way the national attention would have Been on a
rod and put him as a Finalist for the Coordinator
of the year if that. Was the, Truth and anyway
i'm going to leave it AT that because i don't
want to, get INTO anymore but i. DO want to
i want to put some focus on somebody who doesn't
(26:25):
get it quite as MUCH, at b yu who kind
of runs, in the back, behind the scenes, behind the
scenes should be, in the front forefront with what we've
produced over the. Last two years, so last year b
why you had the best? Recruiting, class ever. Yeah last
year this year we outdid. That recruiting class it's, true
that again do you know who stands? Behind that department who?
(26:47):
Runs that department trying to think of Director Of.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
RECRUITING brandon browley i think That's Part, of, anna, no
no okay, keep going. Okay, keep Going No. Not mike
hall i'm, trying, To. Think goodness graci and it should
be In The, Fourth Oh, Anderson justin anderson so. Just
appreciate it you having to. Figure it out the game
should be.
Speaker 5 (27:07):
In the forefront, when you talk You, talk a rod You,
talk j hill you, talk to coordinators you should Be Talking.
About justin Anderson Of. What, Justin anderson no justin is
the RECRUITING, coordinator from uyu which means everything that we
do trying to, get guys here what it takes to,
(27:28):
get a, rioter lions here to get these. Big recruits
here the effort that goes into it is something that.
Nobody really understanding it's not. A coach visit it's not.
Just one business It's not now colonia will make his
visits and. And And whatnot but justin on the back
end is doing everything to bring, these players here and
not just not just your recruits, from high school but
(27:51):
it's also your.
Speaker 6 (27:52):
Transfer.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
Portal guys everything it's, not only THAT it's your nfl scouts.
That are coming Our meeting with. Justin TAKES everything so
i just want to bring it to the forefront that
there's a guy in the back that most of. You
don't see you may see him. On the sideline he's
a nice shiny. Head, Like ME right and i don't
want to give you Some Background, About Justin. Anderson, So
(28:14):
justin So i've known justin since and since Ninety Six, at,
rick's college right and we we've.
Speaker 6 (28:20):
We've got it we've definitely.
Speaker 5 (28:21):
Stayed in contact i've had his kids taught him out
of surf Down in southern california when they were down.
At one point justin has been around football for, a
long time for.
Speaker 6 (28:32):
His.
Speaker 5 (28:32):
Whole life right, not only That but but JUSTIN as
a i just want to show you a little bit
about where he came from so some people can understand.
Who we got so so not only did HE, play
for byu but just to kind of run, through his
background He was an aorum, high school standout, so he uh.
(28:52):
He also coached he was an Assistant Coach for nickels
state where he was a, PASSING game coordinator Nfl Is
on wide receivers coach and tight ends coachy ten. To
twenty Fifteen then at virginia he was with, a player
Personnel And then east carolina's short, stint player PERSONNEL and
then byu as the. Director OF recruiting and i don't
(29:13):
think enough gets put on recognition for him to be
in the Finalist for the Recruiter, of the year and
how big that is just as a rod being in
the finalist as a Coordinator. Of the year we need
to give him his props and his attention because he
deserves it and super proud of what he's been able
(29:34):
to do in the recruiting.
Speaker 6 (29:35):
Side OF things.
Speaker 5 (29:37):
And i just want everyone to know who, That Guy,
is justin anderson and we need to know him and
we need to thank him for his hard work and.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
His whole team he Graduated with A bachelor Of arts
AND communications from byu in two thousand and Two and
the masters as well. In twenty twelve. Check us out
you listened to experience acquire top available talent amager.
Speaker 5 (29:56):
Each position group and YOU know what. I would do
I would put justin over to run and do some stuff.
With the receivers you already have. Him on staff justin
was one of The fastest dudes i've ever. Played ball,
with you know him and his brother uh some of
the fastest RECEIVERS at b yu when they. When they
played and, he knows football he. Knows wide receivers let
(30:19):
him go in THERE and help fessi. On that side
he was a passing game Coordinator Or, At, nicols state
like let him kind of get in there and mix it.
Speaker 6 (30:26):
Up a little in the coaching.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
SIDE of it i think that that would be a
benefit To have a division one wide receiver going in
There and helping festy with some of the.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
THE wide receivers i think it would be. A great
idea i mean that's especially been a point of topic, because,
you know people THE discussion from us and, fans, has
been okay do you bring, in?
Speaker 6 (30:47):
You know.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Analysts Offensively Has been gary Anderson's helping. J hill there
that's been A discussion on hu does you know A
Rob bringing and i've had to shut some fans, down,
because like, oh You Know bringing max Hall. Bringing time
den it's like when you're PLAYING at the, p four
level you're looking for you're going to bring, in a
guy they need to be proven. And, have experience sure
(31:09):
and it's people that's been on the staff. Maybe too
longer you need the, experience doesn't. MATTER right you i mean.
You do cars you want someone. That knows it it's
not that you can't teach, someone do it but. It
takes time when you're already moving fast. In the hay
you want to keep that transition and we want. To
stay here you want.
Speaker 6 (31:22):
To keep rolling you don't want to you don't, have
a setback.
Speaker 5 (31:26):
Slow things down it's who can help, speed things up absolutely.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Make things better and he's got the resume where he's
already sped up, and YOU know so. I LIKE that
actually i didn't. Think about, that you know he, has
played football he's. Had multiple stops it's a guy that
you know kind of gets overshadowed and mean to bring
this up to Is dropped BY pete dam i think.
Late Last Week, but matt, mitchell you Know Going to
colorado state now another guy, has. Been successful helpful.
Speaker 6 (31:53):
We are going to have.
Speaker 5 (31:56):
Some coaching changes over the next few years because on
a person you can't do as well as we're doing
and not have guys get promoted and opportunities because you
only have so many opportunities for promotion within. The team
itself so when people are, looking to advance if there's
not a spot at by, you to advance they are
(32:17):
going to. Get recruited out, we'll not recruited but they're
going to get picked up by another school. And and
opportunities so there's going to be some change over the.
NEXT few, years, i think, yeah but yeah we'll see.
HOW it goes, i always, SAY you know i people got.
MAD with me I said j hill over unders two.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
And a HALF that's. What i said, You NEVER know, and,
I mean look i'll just be, honest and Frank if
if Wick gets, the michigan job that's a guy that's
gonna get. Gonna get poached not saying, he's GONNA leave,
BUT i think i Think how how.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
I've kind of had some conversations, with some PEOPLE and
and I Don't think jay hill will leave unless he's
going to a head coaching position that he really wants.
Speaker 6 (32:56):
TO be at i think he is in a good.
Speaker 5 (32:58):
Spot RIGHT now but i do think that if the,
right job comes it's he's not leaving to go be a.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
COORDINATOR for anybody i don't that's.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
MY personal opinion i think that when HiT's time for, him,
to go uh, if he's not he's not the head
COACH at b yu, at that point he will be
the head coach at a big power for university, in
my opinion like he is and that's where. He should
be Jay's j is is he a scalley that will
sit back and? WAIT that long. I don't know. I
DON'T know I i, know JAY'S comfortable And i Mean,
(33:28):
jay's from. LEHIGH you, know i mean how do you
you have a whole staff of either guys that PLAYED
at b yu or grew up under the SHADOW, of,
b yu right which?
Speaker 6 (33:36):
Is, PRETTY cool.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
YEAH i don't i don't know how you you have?
That at all when when you, Look at that so
it definitely Goes on that this is always a good
topic of discussion because that's Been the ho if He
caagos IN michigan, by u staff they're. Gonna Get posed
so i'm glad that you bring it up and shed
that light on that Because that's something i've. Worried about,
US look like i know he wants to, Be head
coach like would you leave.
Speaker 5 (33:57):
Me yuool more worried for him taking People from the
utah staff.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
Should be.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Worried AS well but i was say talking winning.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
HIM YOU know i i you hear him talk he
wanted to, play another year coach Another year at utah
if not when when he, MAKES his comment i didn't
want to overstay my WELCOME and maybe i have to some, people,
it's like okay that's, a direct.
Speaker 6 (34:25):
Comment you know and and somebody took that literal.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
Talking about, Who knows, right but, Uh.
Speaker 5 (34:32):
You know and it could be on, the Other hand
that scaley was ready, to, go Like look if i'm
not going to be, The head coacher i'm getting offers
to be ahead coach.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
And they, don't want that which and be detrimental. To
their program maybe MAYBE maybe, What i mean i'll tell.
You it is watching the last. Couple Of games, ON
scaley's defense i was not impressed by four or five
hundred yards by teams that we're not having a year
that that warrants. Run right, up so anyways well we'll
(35:00):
see how they, how they, fare you know and how
their their.
Speaker 6 (35:03):
Dear works out, but uh yeah it would.
Speaker 5 (35:04):
Be my ideal it would be uh colony and get
on the phone With with coach whittingham, and, just say
hey how about we went a national championship here at
you're all my manor remember remember that school. You played
for let's come up here and let's let's put a
team together together and. Let's go dominate give them a,
couple of years give me a. YEAR or two i
(35:26):
want to.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Go love that that would be so much out of
spite for those up north THAT would.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
He i was talking that Was at a Christmas party
on saturday nights and and one of some of the
guys there are Just die hard UTAH fans and i
have a fun, time with them, AND and uh i
brought that up, and, they said oh he'd have to
he'd have. To, HIRE security, said i said does that
not tell you enough about your fan? Base right there
(35:54):
that you just what you just said about the coach
you've been there, twenty one years that that there'd be.
People after, Him, that's right. Yeah that's sad what, a?
FAN base, right i mean He went to utah and
there were by fans. That beloved him the are still
fans that, talk to like how do you get how
do we get? Him home, ROUND i'm like i don't
know you're asking. The wrong person like he's BELOVED.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
To b a he's going to Be In the Utah
hall of fame AND The by U Hall Of fame
Athletics hall. Of fame, specifically but. Yeah you're right it's
interesting the fan base when you talk to them and they's,
just the betrayal like they just. How they act. IT'S
so interesting i feel bad for my brother in law
that they graduated From the youth. JOSEPH so bad i Always,
HAVE to.
Speaker 6 (36:28):
Yeah i mean i'm at. THE point nowadays i used
to want him to.
Speaker 5 (36:32):
LOSE every game i just want him TO win every
i want all of our conference teams to win every.
Game except. ONE you know i want The. SAME for
utah i want. Him to win there ARE times when
i watch THE game, and i THINK maybe maybe i
want him to.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Lose this one but sometimes sometimes when it comes to the,
time break scenarios you want to lose you're from because
it looks better, for the resume. It looks good so
what do you think?
Speaker 6 (36:55):
About this week what do You think Of george tex
so you're going. To the game i'm going.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
TO the game i was Gonna Ask. You scouter rep,
What you See how can by you from the receiver standpoint?
In Attack, offensively brandon gurney, who you've met said That
He feels chase roberts can have the two, hundred yard game.
That it's possible we still don't know IF you know lj,
is gonna play who's? Gonna opt out you? Know other people,
so you know you just if it's, If, he doesn't, Right,
you're wondering okay how does that? Affect the offense how
(37:20):
does that, affect you know? The run game bear is
he going to be?
Speaker 1 (37:22):
One?
Speaker 5 (37:22):
HUNDRED percent Yeah i THINK bear is, i, YOU know.
Yeah i offensively i'm sure that we're going to find
out some more things about who's going to be playing
and not playing over the. Next few days and definitely
not for me to to, put OUT THERE but i
I Think that georgia tech. Is very good i'm more
(37:43):
interested in seeing how our secondary. Plays, against this uh
the quarterback And Receivers that, georgia tech has they're.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
They're very good he's a. Formal, four star.
Speaker 6 (37:53):
Yeah so it'll be.
Speaker 5 (37:54):
INTERESTING to see I think that by's gonna be out
to do the same thing we did Last year with
colorado and really put a lot into this game and
make it like that's WHAT'S cool with Byu is this
bowl game is, A big deal like it is we
that we made a statement Last year with colorado and
this year we need to do it Again With the
georgia tech and it'll it'll launch us into a good
(38:16):
position going. Into NEXT year and i think we retain
a lot of players that might a few years ago
have OPTED. FOR the nfl i think that the opportunity
to make money in college nowadays is just such a
big difference where you have the opportunity and this is
(38:38):
just me as a, player perspective too is your opportunity
to be the big fish in a little pond, right
next year, be the senior be the TOP, of the
ncaa be the top, of your.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
Conference or the top headline everything and.
Speaker 5 (38:52):
Getting paid well or you can go into the draft
and be a sixth seventh round draft, pick, you hope,
right maybe fifth but then you still got to earn
those spots and you still.
Speaker 6 (39:03):
Got to go.
Speaker 5 (39:03):
Make that team and now you're the little fish in.
A big pund enjoy the time you have in college
because now, you, get paid right you probably get paid about. The,
same thing dude that's. The crazy part and.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
Then at the fifth and sixth round you might. Not
be value.
Speaker 6 (39:16):
You're, making enough.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
Money and go take that insurance policy out so that
if you, do get. Hurt they're there you're you're in good.
Standing as well but enjoy your. Time in college it goes.
Once it's gone once you, make that leap it, can't go.
Back you know and so if THEY'RE financially if byu
is gonna.
Speaker 6 (39:32):
Take, care of you go.
Speaker 5 (39:33):
Enjoy that time get, your brothers together pull a couple
of these guys off the portal, that we need and
let's go win. A national championship because if we pull
this team together and we keep the guys here and
then we get maybe a couple of standout receivers, to
come in maybe some of the freshmen coming in take some.
Of those roles we get a couple other linebackers come
in to kind of. MIX it, up i mean, we would,
(39:55):
have you know maybe another backup for. For for bear
not to say that the, backups are great, BUT you
know i wouldn't mind see.
Speaker 2 (40:03):
Another one too You're speaking CRUs you're at the point
where if you look at the programs, that are, committee
sate committee competing. For national championships they, got back, up
four stars they. Got back up that's just that's just the.
Nature OF that so i don't, disagree With. You grab HAMMOND.
Speaker 5 (40:21):
So when i heard that the cincinnadi quarterback was looking
at transferring and He's talking, about, texas tack right.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
We talking, About and Well.
Speaker 5 (40:32):
I'm done irovelay i'm supposed to.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
Be the guy a red Shirt. Sophomore beat utah we
had The Lead in, arizona state game y'all lost at
THE defense and i, took the leader got the two
point convert and you're gonna and you're gonna bring it. A,
different guy.
Speaker 6 (40:47):
Yeah oh no the third strings.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
Is here too i'm supposed to.
Speaker 6 (40:51):
Be the future but. It'd be hard it'd be hard to.
Speaker 2 (40:52):
Bring him in the thing is like To sit behind
bear because he's not going to be bear out. And
it's tough that's tough. Because it's hard that's all wrong
because he can. Rip the ball this is where he.
Can throw man so that's a tough one, because, you're
LIKE oh Do? I WANT bear Do? I want will?
I want Both i like WILL him And I. Like
bear bachmeyer so that's, A good discussion but you bring
up a good point backups if somebody, does go down because,
(41:13):
let's be honest If you have will, in that Game
you pull bear after maybe, the first Play you throw
well out and you start, SLINGING it like i don't
think you just. AGREE with that i think they're more prone, to, do, that,
Like YEAH sorry.
Speaker 5 (41:25):
Unfortunately i, don't, feel like Like especially when barrett was
Hurt In the, texas tech game in, THE championship game
i don't feel like the confidence was there that we
could bring in one of our backups and he could
do better Than.
Speaker 6 (41:38):
An INJURED bear and i.
Speaker 5 (41:40):
Know people, want, to, say oh yeah you could Have
he wut man against that front seven and having not,
played a snap real.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Snapotch all season the speed of that you folded and
maybe YOU know As i like i've BEEN saying to
i don't.
Speaker 6 (41:53):
Even know if he could see. Over those guys and
unfortunately he's not.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Even just him if you bring in the guy after
him or the other the, freshman half day. It's it's tough,
it'd been tough. That's THE thing but i like your,
Point of, that but no you bring it up. A
good point do these senior guys that could does and
and obviously when you look, at the roster, looking At it,
by MERIT. Right L, J martina, glavasa come back you
mentioned guys, in The porters the texas linebacker, on the
(42:17):
portal they Just got a.
Speaker 5 (42:18):
Texas you see the guys in The portal AND.
Speaker 6 (42:21):
Oregon, got i mean we've got great corner inspect but.
Speaker 2 (42:27):
Maybe, bringing that guy you don't have To run the
nickel package as much If you feel tommy can go
back to safety and. Players true positions and he, is
he is you know he.
Speaker 5 (42:36):
Is he look so So is the texas linebackeryations man
and they have very tight, Connections with players. Yes they
do they played in. High school together played in.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
High school because like We played. In texas together the
worlds oh you left to go. To, by you look
this is what to. Just tell people it's. The Holiday
season the porters. Will give it it's gonna take It
the way you're Gonna Have A harrison Tager. Aquila, merin
on unfortunately we just HAVE to say I hope, that
i'm wrong but look that's JUST the way i don't.
Speaker 5 (43:04):
See it yet that's The thing with by you remember those.
Happened after spring but that didn't happen. After the, season
it did it Did and, that uh. Yeah we'll. SEE
let's see i.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
Think next round.
Speaker 5 (43:17):
Of, The place yeah i'm Super Excited. For la, boots you,
know let's go let's. Go free smoke i'll get you Out.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
Of a miami miami. Was turned up. THEY had screensaving
i heard. What he said that's the.
Speaker 5 (43:29):
Type, of energy yeah they win, THE next, GAME i
might i might make my Way.
Speaker 2 (43:34):
Down, To phoenix look i'm talking about If they Beat
ohio that i'm going. To join you i'm, Not even
kidding Like You beat ohio state with what they have
offensively and how break that defensive line is. Supposed to
Be If if carson beck Does That, with malachi Tony,
with with keelan if they're but, To do that i'm
gonna have to. Join you down i'll get you out.
(43:55):
Here on this let's. Talk wide receivers you're losing three
of your, top pass catchers, Losing Carsonal, right chase roberts they're,
out of eligibility and you could POTENTIALLY.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
Lose.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
L j martin we, don't know yet but probably not
right from You know. WHAT i've heard i Think that's
that i'm rescinding that more and. More every day, but
you know let's still. You never know if, you, don't
know right let's just. Say you could but who do.
You go Bringing Obviously got, jared puola coming And You,
Got Terrence sarrion lemson wallace, Hit the portal don McKenzie
has it would Be tough for. DOMIN to play i
(44:24):
think you're kind of sad a Little bit about, lamson
is like oh the talent he was dinged up though he.
Struggled being injured But you're bringing. Jaron who's proven you
saw what he did. THIS past season i think he
is the day. One Impact, PLAYER terrence sarrin i think
is a day. One impact player, he can play, and
you know YOU get p k back and, Then you
know i've heard, rumblings about, maybe you know b why
(44:44):
he's looking at a big time receiver from another conference.
Speaker 5 (44:47):
To, BRING in well i, think we did, We need one.
We need one we need some running backs as well
to kind.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Of NEED that and lgi. Does't come Back You, got
davon echo so you need.
Speaker 5 (44:57):
Still two more, in, my OPINION yeah so i think
that they're there are definitely some areas that. We could
fill it's going to, Take Some effort justin anderson's. Going,
After him man we'll see what. THEY bring, in i
mean wells ever FOR b Y u and i feel
like the portal guys that we get are going to be.
Key role guys we're not just looking to sign portal
(45:19):
guys and bring more people. On the team it's like
key roles that these guys can fill in or Actually come,
in i'm sorry, not fill in but come in and
compete with who we, have here, now YOU know as
i think we have some good guys that are going
to step into some roles that have kind of not had.
The opportunities, yet but, yeah the receivers it'll be it'll
(45:40):
be interesting to see what the. Freshman can do but on,
TOP of that i do feel like we could use
a couple of solid transfers to get a. GUY or,
TWO i mean i think We might get There's there's
this lions GUY down in usc that we, might.
Speaker 2 (45:52):
Oh yeah but he might as well be one for
with how he Runs routes, of my goodness you's he's.
A tight end, but oh man you put him in
a slider just it just might be that you know
the lions brothers and The and. The bachmeyer, brothers, hey,
Look hey look i'm okay, with, you know lions. Tigers
(46:13):
and bears i'll, Just say that i'm okay with. All
of it give me all the animals out there. In, the,
safari hey look at the end, OF the day i
would love to see a bear to a bear. TO
lion action i love to see that. An end zone
i'll just Say this and i'll get your. TAKE on
this i was very. Declared about this people gave. ME major,
pushback I said if walker Comes, to B yu which
(46:35):
i think he will just, have to wait wait for
everything to see and. Get worked out if, THAT'S the
case I Think, it's isaac rex you know. TWO point
zero i think it's the red zone thread of where
when you get inside Twenty, yards in yeah he's. The
main target well that's, The, before, Injury isaac right isaac diff.
Speaker 6 (46:53):
He was. A, mon star.
Speaker 5 (46:55):
Yeah coming in so if you get a tight end
with big body who come block and he can run
routes and catch, with his, hands you. Know it's great
so that that's a wrinkle that that that a rod needs.
In his offense with what we do and he. Would,
be GREAT yeah so i think we're. LOOKING really, good
i mean you look back at the season now and
it's like we had.
Speaker 6 (47:17):
A great.
Speaker 5 (47:18):

Being even better, but it's coming. You know what, we
