Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to Cougar scorts here one to three point
nine and nine point three ESPN the Fan Ronald the
three man Weaver had to let that music really sink in.
That's right, it's a gonna be a college basketball but
also keeping up with the Cougars, maybe we can get
into a little bit of Cougar's and the pros playing
professionally as well. We're gonna welcome in just a recent
former b YU great. He was on the roster, made

(00:22):
the sweet sixteen round for the twenty twenty four to
twenty five season. He's very beloved, not only in the
community on the team. I think we talk about Brett
who was going to be the most misplayer, and I
think you maybe can say, of we want to talk
about skill set, you could say yegor demon. But when
I go on, I look at the box score, when
I go a look an impact, we talk about these

(00:43):
glue guys, Guys that you need, guys that were coming back.
When Kevin Young was coming into his first year, Trevin
Neil gets over skipped. He's like what I call underappreciated, right,
I think it's a love I say love hate relationship,
and when I mean that and choosing my words carefully,
is when Trevin drops twenty seven from the ball, why
is he getting taken out the game?

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Mark Pope? But then when he's all said, it's like
what's going on? Take him?

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Is like no, it's like guys, like you don't understand
the nature of the game, Like without this guy who
literally in the games against UCF on the road and
big time moments in the games against Kansas Iowas. And
if that guy's not on the floor, with the lacks
of Dalla Hall, who's tre Ore Richie Saunders, uyu doesn't win.

(01:26):
Like remember in the beginning of the season, Brett a
lot of tens around Yegor and Cannon Rifley. So those
guys deserve their props to a degree. And we know
Can has moved on Yego's reclaar for the draft. But
the core four, those four guys were leading you in
big time games this entire season when it matter most
down to stretch.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, And I think people forget the year, not this
last season, the season before when Trevin came back from
injury and j Billis said trevon Nell might be the
best shooter in the entire country. And then Trevin Nell
went up and said, hey, I'm not just a shooter.
I can drive to the basket in the back ball.
And also I can bump with guys who try to
bump me back back into Big twelve. Whether or not
Trevin bumps first, who knows. But Trevin doesn't take that.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
He doesn't.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
And what I love about Trevin's game is, I know
Kevin on his tongue in cheek in the post game
of Trevin getting his first double double Grabbington bores is
the development, right, Trev.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
And this is what I like.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Right. I'm not gonna say he's Jake retz Leaf, but
Trev sees to talk right, and he's very bubbly, very laughing.
I was like, all right, okay, cool, we'll check this
out though, And he's proven it, right, Hey, I can
drive to the basket. I can defend. I remember that narrative, Oh,
he's not a good defender. That's not true. Trevin definitely
is a good defender. Have you watched him, Like, Okay,
and then he goes and he proves, And I love that.
A guy that just keeps his head down works and

(02:39):
then when you talk to him, he's gonna talk back
and let you know and says, hey, just look at
the box score, but you know you also want to
look at the box of Premo Golf. You need to
order your golf apparel today. It's taking a nation by storm.
They got thirty new Polos, Brett thirty new Polos. They
dropped the new Quarterszip and Quarterszip Vest. So if you're
into golfing, we're gonna actually have to ask Trevin Nell
about this. I think I saw a post him and

(03:00):
Trey Stewart and a bunch of other athletes are gonna
be gonna host I think a golf tournament are gonna
be doing some type events.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
We need to get an update on the that.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
It was posted through Center Street Media, So we're gonna
have to get that and pitch that. But guys, use
the discount code ESPN nine sixty to get fifteen percent
off your order today on joggers, blay poles.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
And hoodies. Well, let's not make him wait anymore.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Let's welcome in the shot Doctor, the Sharp fifty forty ninety,
the guy that will be missed next year. I really
think big time. We got Trevor miillan line. Trev brother,
thanks for joining us today.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
I appreciate you Ron happy to be here, excited, you know,
hoops and talking about where by is going and everything.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
So I appreciate you guys having me.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Let's start with this. I think I saw something online
Center Street Media. You guys are is it a golf
tournament that's gonna be occurring here in the next couple
of days.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
So we actually already did it.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
We went out to Georgia, me Strey, We got Tyler
al Jeer out there. We had Henk Clear Potty and
Mason and so we and even Blake freedlom Is out there.
So it was actually pretty fun to be all too,
you know, comeby because it's always been like a I
don't even know what to say, like a blockade between
football and basketball, and we never really kind of intertwined

(04:07):
our our paths, and so it's really fun to be
able to, you know, make connections with the football team
and build those friendships and so it's super fun. Golf
is definitely frustrating, definitely got to get a back on
the course to work on my suite, but it was
super fun for sure.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah, a lot of these A football players definitely got
Blake Freeland golfs. They do the Media Golf Tournament every
year and they invite former players to come back, right
you know, I know it's hosted by football. Maybe you're
gonna have to be the first basketball player to sneak
in there. But Blake Freeland has broken some clubs, like
from what I've heard him, from what I've seen, So
Blake likes to go, oh my gosh.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
So he doesn't carry a driver because he can hit
the ball so far.

Speaker 5 (04:47):
So he usually hits like.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
A seven iron and he went like two hundred and
fifty yards and so he just he's he literally just
golf with a seven iron. He has a he tries
to actually hit it as far as he came out
to set, so you can only he can try to
get it on the green with two shots instead of
multiple because he his short game's not there, but his
long game is definitely there.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
He's gracious, that's oh my good man. Has some happy game,
more energy.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Definitely has some happy Gilman a gym and that's what
happens when you what six six six seven and your
three hundred and fifteen pounds. I mean, yeah, let's just
say they're this offensiveland the NFL that does that. But no, Trevor,
what's that been like for you? Having seen the success
of the football team and then supporting them and likewise
them coming to your games and supporting you. Obviously know

(05:34):
the likes of maybe an Alabama, you know, maybe a
Georgia have the potential to finish top twenty five in
both sports, but not too many schools get a chance
to finish top fifteen both you and football. Your program
in basketball and football did that? How is that this year?
Just having the hype around both programs.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
It was actually awesome because I remember when we first started,
everybody was coming out to us about I can't wait
for the basketball season, star and all that stuff, and
I remember we were all like, guys, like, this football
season is gonna be amazing.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
We're super pumped.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Just fun to be able to be supporting them at
the games, had then support us, and again, I think
it just shows where b YU Athletics is kind of
going with, you know, the tracks, tracks like number one
in the country that win everything, and then you go
through football and basketball we both finished thirteenth in the country.
Super super cool, and I'm just excited to see where
you know, byod Yu athletics goes Trevin.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
It's really interesting because a year and a month ago
b YU basketball from a fans perspective, nobody really had
any idea what was gonna happen. Kevin Young wasn't here yet,
Mark Pope had left. Can you talk about the turnaround
and really just the overall vibe check that the team
went through, Like did definite when when everything went down

(06:50):
and Coach Pope leaves and you don't know who your
coach is going to be and then I tell you, hey, Trevin,
you're gonna go to the sweet sixteen in the inside
of the late tournament. What was the tournament turnaround like
for this team and what about Kevin Young and you
and the core four was able to do this?

Speaker 4 (07:09):
Yeah, I just remember like as soon as we brought it,
we bought everybody in right when coach what was still here,
we had a really cool meeting. We had the graphics
up that ESPN was going to have us at a
like preseason top ten, top fifteen team, and then like
the next couple of weeks, Coach Pope leaves, and I
remember like everything on social media was saying we went

(07:31):
in to be like a top hundred team, our teams
kind of done all this stuff. And then I remember
just talking to Brian Son too, was like, hey, just
trust me, like we're going to get something handled and
I know you're like gonna be a good spot.

Speaker 5 (07:43):
Just trust me. So that's one of the.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
Main reasons why I didn't put my name in the porttle,
just because I have a really good relationship with Brian
with Uyu, and I feel like, do I use my
my home, my my home away from home, my family,
and so there's no other place I would rather be.
And then the fact that I got the call from
coach to coach K, why about you know him coming
here and his vision for me, It's like a whole

(08:07):
you know, one eighty turn. And then to be able
to go to the tournament was amazing. I feel like
we had our ups and downs this last season, just
trying to figure out because it's definitely different, right, going
from playing one style of offense, kind of style of
a coach to a different style and trying to figure
out different pieces different players are playing with. So it

(08:27):
definitely took some time. But you know, to be able
to go nine straight games, nine straight wins in the
Big Twelve and then to go to sweet sixteen is
like a picture of perfect ending, kind of like writing
your own story.

Speaker 5 (08:39):
So it was super, super unique and super cool when you.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Were on that nine game, Ministry deswide the confidence and
swagger in that locker room. I had a chance to
catch up with some of you guys at are the
Big twelve tournament, but it just there was an aura
that you could just honestly smell from you guys of like, yeah,
we're not losing, Like we know we're the hottest team
right now and we're proving it and backing it up.

Speaker 5 (09:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
I mean it's crazy because like people talk about, oh,
do you guys realize you guys were on like a
seven eight nine game, and I was like, and I
would say no, Like you look back, We literally took
a game by game and we were so locked in
on the smallest of details. I think that's what helped us,
you know, stay focused, stay present, and help us ultimately
pull out these like you know, late game wins against

(09:22):
you know the powerhouses of Iowa State in Arizona, and
so it's just it's literally amazing.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
It's super cool, and like you said, we definitely did
have a swagger like we talked about.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
You know, I am a guy that I personally won't
say anything until someone said something to me. I think
that's kind of how the team was. We definitely handled
our business, and as soon as someone kind of disrespected us,
it was like, okay, it's game on, Like we're gonna
kind of show you guys kind of who BYU is
and put BYU on the map. And it was just
an unreal scenario to be able to do it in

(09:53):
the first year of coach Young, in the second year
of the Big Twelve.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yeah, the part.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
About that stretch that is so I guess what intriguing
to me is that was I would argue the toughest
stretch of the season considering who you played. You started
off with a Kansas State team who was at the
time the hottest team in college basketball.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Was there a moment when you guys felt.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
The season click or was it just simply you would
finally played enough together with Kevin Young that it just
clicked itself.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
I think it's a little bit of both. I remember the.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Kind of turning point of our toughness was definitely the
game at UCF.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
They're just an incredibly.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Aggressive hands the team so I remember at halftime Coach
Young doesn't ever yell, doesn't really ever get like his
emotions too high or too low. But I remember he
kind of laid into us at halftime and just talked
to us about how we needed to be tougher. We
all set our goals at the beginning of the year
kind of what our identity wanted it to be, and

(10:57):
the kind of concessus consensus was toughness, right, to have
that blue collar attitude. And I remember we were kind
of we turned the ball over a ton of you see,
after the first half, they had more offensive rebounds, all
this stuff, and Coach Young just kind of challenged us
and then we were able to respond in a really
dramatic way, and I think that's kind of propelled us

(11:18):
going forward. But then again, like you talk about Coach
Young in his demeanor, he was so calm and he
just instilled confidence in each and every one of us.
I remember at Arizona, Uh, we were up then you know,
Cayler Love did this thing. They were up I think
one or yeah, one point twelve seconds left. Coach Young

(11:39):
grabs us all in, calls time out and says, guys,
I want you to look me in the eye.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
We are winning this game, and he's.

Speaker 4 (11:47):
Like, I want you guys to believe that I believe it.
Look at each other and he all made us kind
of say like, do you guys believe and we all
said yes and went out there and beat them. Then
the exact same thing happened at I alway stay just
the exact oppos it was on It was on defense.
So the conviction he had really helped us to, you know,
say the course, pound the rock until it broke.

Speaker 5 (12:07):
And it was just in a storybook ending for sure.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Thank you for sharing that.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
A lot of fans and our listeners will be able
to get that inside of what that was like because
we're not in the team models right now. We from
a media perspective say, Kevin Young is one of the
best college coaches out of timeouts, right, you know, we
say that, see that, But like I mean, and let's
just touch on that for a little bit, how was
that for you as a player. You know your coach
is good and you're brought in, but when you're sitting down,

(12:31):
you're watching him.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
Like he really called that.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
He really got Richie to the free throw line in
eight in the last you know, seven seconds to win
the game. He really drew that playoff from a win.
How is that like when you go back and look
at it and you just shake your head of man,
our coach really is a steward of the game himself.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
Yeah, he's a magician with the pen, and so it was.
It was amazing thrill too, because like has somebody that
is like has that much comf and it's too run
plays for different players. I remember to start games, I
would get to play drawn for me like nine times
out of ten, and a lot of times when we
needed a three or something, he would draw a play

(13:11):
for me and it would always work. And so to
be able to, you know, have that confidence from a
coach and then be able to go up there and
perform at that level is really amazing. I think it's
always funny when people are like, oh, Richie never got fouled.

Speaker 5 (13:23):
I was like, if if you look at the play,
you can tell.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
You got hip checked, it's definitely a foul. At any
other point from another team, anybody would be like, yeah,
that's a foul.

Speaker 5 (13:32):
So I think it's funny how fans can be.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
But yeah, I just it's amazing to be able to
be coached by ok why And I'm excited to see
his like because now this year is gonna be kind
of his team, and so it's gonna be awesome to
see what he does.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
You mentioned Richie Saunders, and there were a lot of
stories last year from this team as an entirety that
were so fun to watch. But I don't know if
there was a cooler story or a more fun story
to watch than Richie Sonders go from.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
He kind of popped off last year.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
And obviously you have always known what Richie is, but
the national media didn't, and they got to learn who
Richie Sunders really was, especially maximizing his talents in the
NCAA tournament. Talk about the change and the growth that
you saw from Richie Saunders throughout the season and and
what if any Kevin Young had to play in that.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
Yeah, I mean coach coach Ky and Richie. I feel
like we're talking all the time. They had a really
good trust, really good relationship, and I just felt like
Richie got to play the role he needed to play.
We definitely leaned on him quite a bit. Uh and
he just has a knack for, you know, getting to
the free throw line, getting open shots and just playing

(14:47):
with confidence. And I think his credits to his mentality.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
He just goes, goes, goes. He has no stop.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
Button and he will literally he's like the perfect, you know,
player to coach because he'll give you you one hundred
and ten percent and he'll leave nothing less after a game.

Speaker 5 (15:05):
So I'm just super.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
Glad and happy that, you know, the whole media, ESPN,
everybody in the country can kind of understand who rich
he is. And I'm excited to see what he does
this next year. I'm happy that he's back for his
senior year. I think he's gonna be definitely a national
favorite for a lot of fans.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
Quick side tangent, Did you guys know this story about
the Tater Tots? Because I had never I had never.
I mean I thought it was made up. I'd never
heard this before. I was like, I've worked and covered
bou for a long time. How have I never heard this?
Did you guys know this about Richie Saunders that he
was the Tater Talk King or did you learn with.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
The rest of this We we kind of found out
what the rest of everybody me and you know, Trey
and Yager.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
We'd always laugh and be like, all right, I.

Speaker 4 (15:50):
Bet one of our grandparents started like the chicken nugget.

Speaker 5 (15:52):
We got to somehow find a loophole.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
We go.

Speaker 5 (15:56):
But yeah, it's just super funny.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
It's hilarious that that media kind of took off, and
I was happy, and I'm excited to see, like what
the next narrative will be for Ritchie. But I respect
the way he handled it all and it was fun
to be able to, you know, be a part of it.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
The Tanner, tat King, the shot doctor, you name it.
I'm definitely gonna miss though, the beginning of the game.
And you know, obviously having played basketball and in high
school and having Jabari Bloward Parker before he got injured
blow your team out by sixty, you understand some thing.
So I'm gonna miss the Trevannill open it up with
the three, hitting the three and fist pumping to start
the game. That is something that I would definitely be missed.

(16:32):
Talking about running plays for you, I definitely have noticed that. Sorry, Kevin,
don't mean to give away your schematics, but I mean
it's right there on.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
People just want to see you try to make the three.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
But I'm over here watching, you know, making sure Cable
doesn't get called for an offensive screen to start the game.

Speaker 4 (16:46):
Oh, I know, I got I gotta yelled at quite
a bit.

Speaker 5 (16:49):
They're all the coaches like te have you gotta wait
for it. I'm like know each other. We know each other.

Speaker 4 (16:55):
He knows when to stop, he knows like we played
it for a little bit now, and so it's pretty
funny to kind of see the dynamic with the assistant
coaches and then me and kid as well.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Take us through as a player, right. Obviously you mentioned
and this is where I want to go next. You
mention the foul that was called, and you're right. Any
other team is gonna say that's a foul. You have
checked them, right. We all are just completely objective and
lie and say it's not a foul because we want
our team to win. We're passionate about our fan base.
But Tony Putdio was the one that made the call. Right,
How has that been for you as a player, right?

(17:25):
Because I feel like he's a guy that wants to
call it the right way. But sometimes I feel and
I don't understand referee, and right, it gets in the way.
I want you to take me through. Just that the
technical foul in the game. You know, against Alabama, you
hit a three, you guys are on a run cutting.
I said, okay, this might be the momentum boost, right,
and you turn around and what looks to me like

(17:45):
as sitting there, you're talking to your fans, and the
next thing you know, I'm like, a technical file is like,
are we being serious?

Speaker 2 (17:51):
Like he's not talking to the player.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
What was what he explains to you what happened in
that moment, because from you know, my vantage point, it
looked like it was not taunting, but Tony thought obviously otherwise.

Speaker 4 (18:04):
Yeah, I mean Tony's a I mean you can say
what it is like, he.

Speaker 5 (18:08):
Could be a great ref.

Speaker 4 (18:09):
He can be a ref that kind of wants it
more about himself. But I remember when he called it
against Arizona, gives a call, we all looked at each
other like the curses bro kude. But yeah, the Alabama
game was that was probably the lowest of low in
terms of a Sweet sixteen call I probably have ever
seen and been part of. I remember Alabama, they were

(18:33):
on a roll, they.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
Were up eleven.

Speaker 4 (18:36):
I was able to get the ball, shoot it, cut
it within eight points, and all I did was turn
around say boom right in front of my fans and
throw put it down a three. Kind of how I've
done the whole year, yea, and Tony. Tony gave me
a text that I can't do it to the player,
and so we I had a conversation with him saying

(18:57):
that was the players.

Speaker 5 (18:58):
To my side, like there's no I didn't even look
really at him and looking at my fans. The player,
uh Filon comes up to me as they're shooting the tech.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
It goes I can't believe he just called that. He's like,
he's like, I have told so much respect for.

Speaker 5 (19:13):
You, but that that was a bad call. Like he's
literally on our side at it, like laughing.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
And so that was a huge turn of events because
the very next possession, I take a charge on Filon.
I feel like I got my chest in front. I
didn't talked to the other ref. The other ref was
actually going to go talk to Tony to try to
change it, and Tony said no. But it kind of
just shows like that's a four point swing just right
there to cut it right back to eleven to twelve

(19:41):
points when you know, I don't know what the outcome
could have been if we kind of kept that momentum going,
but I think it kind of would have stopped the
bleeding a little bit, and it probably would have been
a lot closer.

Speaker 5 (19:51):
Than than the Olcome on the game.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
No, if it's Trevia n Neill hitting that three, no technical,
you guys have a four points, so you cut that
to four with the the arena was rocking with Cougar Blue.
I think Alabama now, I think I know Alabama would
have been underneath some pressure. Maybe right, maybe they still
do get the game out, but I would love to.
I love to see big time players or teams when
they're under pressure, when teams are making run, see what

(20:14):
they do. But one team that wasn't there making a
run was Kansas. What got into you guys in that game?
What did Kevin Young say? Because you say Kevin Young
doesn't yell, right, did Kevi Young say, hey, we get
these guys. Ain't no Bill Self, ain't no Kansas, ain't
no nothing like what was said? Because I've never seen
a coach again, we get to see stuff that you

(20:35):
guys don't. When when Bill Softh caught that first time
out after eight a run and you guys went up
fourteen to two. He kicks back his legs and puts
his hands behind his head and just lean backs and
looks up and said, it's gonna be one of those nights.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
He knew in the first two minutes he lost the game.
He knew there was a point of no return.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
What got into you guys, because you guys put that
game away literally in the first ninety seconds of.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
The ball game.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
Yeah, I just remember, yeah, I just got chills just
thinking about the game. I remember I was sitting I
think nine ninety nine points. I needed one more point
to reach a thousand. I had the media, like Tyson
was talking to me about it before the game, all
this stuff, and I remember the first time, I think
Richie threw it to me in the corner, and as
soon as the ball touched I was like, this ball's
going up.

Speaker 5 (21:20):
And as soon as it went in.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
I pointed to Sean Farnham and we had a good
laugh after the game a little bit about it. But
I just remember, like Coach Young, before the game, we
had a plan for how they're gonna start and everything,
and they changed their starting lineup and he kind of
coached Young kind of took it a little bit disrespectful, like, oh,
they think they're gonna punk us by putting a bigger

(21:41):
lineup in, they think they're gonna out rebound us all
this stuff. And he's like, let's go show him who,
like how what our toughness really is, Like we've already
prepared for this going up to this game.

Speaker 5 (21:50):
He's like, let's go prove it. And so we were
armed like jazz, ready to go, like going.

Speaker 4 (21:55):
Like crazy, cause they were kind of laughing during warm
ups too, Like I have a lot of respect for
a lot of those guys, but you know, when you
play for a team like Kansas, you're already on the
national media, you're the preseason.

Speaker 5 (22:07):
You know, number one team, and so.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
Like they came in, I think to our arena and
we're just like, oh, it's gonna be a cakewalk. They
beat this at our home, it's time to beat them
at their place. Kind of like laughing, joking a little bit,
and we kind of took a little person Like I
remember us five our starters.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
We were like, let's set the tone.

Speaker 4 (22:23):
Let's not let them even breathe, Like, let's just go
run out of the gym. And that was like literally
our conversation and then the first like you said, ninety seconds,
it was a bang bang bang bang.

Speaker 5 (22:33):
Coach Bill Soelth called the time out.

Speaker 4 (22:35):
Next couple possessions of bang bang bank, he calls another
time out. I don't they I've ever experienced a coach
that calls like three straight timeouts. But yeah, that was
one of the best games I think in the Mary
Center kind of have experiences.

Speaker 5 (22:48):
In terms of who we played and how we executed.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
It feels unreal to say that your time at BYU
is is done it again, it doesn't feel real. Do
you have any other favorite moments or games from your
time at BUYU.

Speaker 5 (23:04):
Oh my gosh, it's crazy. I feel like so fast.

Speaker 4 (23:08):
I know I've been here for so long, but I
feel like it's gone so fast. This last year I
think was super special. I mean we talked about the
Cincinnati game two years ago when I hit nine three,
I was hoping to get.

Speaker 5 (23:18):
The record but just didn't happen.

Speaker 4 (23:20):
That was something that super special in the Mary Center,
just for our first ever Big twelve game, and then
just my time last year was probably the most memorable
I've ever experienced, just because you know, at Arizona, I
come off a screen We're up by one and coach
Young calls it was a timeout.

Speaker 5 (23:36):
He calls a play for me to shoot it, and
then I came off the screen, locked and.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
Loaded, made it and I remember him fish pumping him
super energetic gets us energetic.

Speaker 5 (23:47):
So that one was memorable.

Speaker 4 (23:49):
I think the Big Twelve tournament playing Iowa Stayed again,
that one was super cool.

Speaker 5 (23:55):
I always Stay was was amazing. And then I think
the most memorable one I'll remember for like a lifetime.
It's just the Wisconsin game. That game was.

Speaker 4 (24:05):
It was amazing to be able to play in Denver
with the amount of fans we had. I feel like
I played a really high level game and to be
able to come out a win with a win, especially
with a close game, I think it was just again,
like you you think about it as a kid, that's
exactly what you do.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Did that Wisconsin game just feel like a home game.

Speaker 4 (24:25):
A lot of Actually, it's crazy if you think about,
like do why you traveled? I love Kugarnation. That's another
reason why I like this place in my home. Like
BYU fans love their sports. They love their athletes and
us as well like we love them.

Speaker 5 (24:38):
But yes, it definitely feels like a home game.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
I feel like every road game feels like a home game,
and so I have it's tremendous amount of respect.

Speaker 5 (24:45):
I feel like they carried us in a lot of games.
So shout out to Cougrenation for sure.

Speaker 2 (24:48):
Trevin.

Speaker 3 (24:49):
Obviously, you'll go on and you'll do your thing, maybe
play overseas, whatever it is. But they do call you
the shot doctor for a reason. Do you think there's
any world in which you come back to maybe v YU,
maybe somewhere else as a shooting coach or basketball coach.
Because we were talking to Tyler Maruss the other day.
We were like, hey, we know you're a shooter. You
know Trevan Nell is a shooter. He was like, oh, man,

(25:11):
I would love to talk to Trevin Nell about shooting
and improving my shot. Is there any world in which
would YU fans get to see you as a coach
down there at Area Center.

Speaker 4 (25:24):
It would definitely be a dream to be able to
coach at b YU. I'm eventually and he coach you on.
You have definitely had those conversations. We're just kind of
figuring out their staff. There's not a spot yet for me,
and so it might be to go play receips for
a little bit and then come back. But definitely I
would love to, you know, give back to BYU everything

(25:44):
they've given me. And I feel like just with my
knowledge with you know, with me being injured, going over
the noalytics, kind of giving myself familiar with the noalytics,
and then everything that I've learned from shooting and the
mental aspect of the game, I think I could be
a Uh. I started training a couple of people, so
it's gonna be fun to be able to dabble into

(26:04):
that coaching realm.

Speaker 5 (26:06):
But again, like it'd be awesome for sure.

Speaker 2 (26:08):
That's amazing.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
Not a spot available pending like your debit card.

Speaker 1 (26:12):
Charge ending grating you mentioned overseas. Yeah, what's the next
step for you? Have you hired agent or you in
that process? What have you looked at as next steps
of playing overseas?

Speaker 4 (26:25):
H Yeah, it's definitely gonna see about the opportunity that comes.
I just hired an agent just today, so this is
perfect timing, and so I'm excited to just see what
opportunity kind of gets thrown my way. But I'm excited
excited to see what Western Europe kind of has for
me if there's a if the opportunity is right for
me and my wife, especially with her business, Shout out
Frankie Jane if you ever look for her address, but

(26:47):
a Frankie Jane Orum. But we're kind of figuring that
out right now, and so if that's not an opportunity
for both of us to go, then might dabble into
being a Grat assistant or something like that. For for Yu,
are just you know, doing other coaching and other stuff
on the side in.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
Addition to coaching and playing. You also started a podcast.

Speaker 3 (27:04):
He did season was doing a podcast as easy as
you thought it would be.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
How did that go? What was that like for you
and Trey?

Speaker 4 (27:12):
Yeah, you know, shout out Center Street Media if you
guys are looking for a little more insight knowledge on
what kind of the athletes are going through me and
me and Trey.

Speaker 5 (27:21):
Trey actually just has decided to work.

Speaker 4 (27:23):
On more on Wood and Grail, So we're in the
process of kind of finding finding a new co host.
It might be Dawson Baker, so shout out to the
chef Baker.

Speaker 5 (27:33):
But yeah, the podcast is awesome.

Speaker 4 (27:35):
I feel like for me it's really national to be
able to connect with a lot of these athletes. I
remember when I was on the visit with aj Aj
was saying like how we wanted me to have one
more year to play with And so I feel like
I can connect with a lot of athletes in a
really unique way by being a player and stuff.

Speaker 5 (27:53):
So it's super fun.

Speaker 4 (27:54):
It's super cool to be able to dive into their
their own story because every athlete has their own story
and their their own you know, difficulties or own challenges.
So it's fun to be able to unpack all those
and see kind of what their personal goals are and
kind of do it off the record where it's now
might might not be as you know, national media as
BYU media is, and so it's kind of a cool
way to be able to have them open up a

(28:15):
little bit.

Speaker 1 (28:15):
More surev Last thing for me, I'm gonna connect this
all on one. Just take us through. You mentioned your
wife Tatum, shout out to Frankie Jane if you need
a what and dress, Gonna get my plug again for
it down there, and orum always got to take us
through the support system her, your family. I want you
really to describe that because we see in the world
of NIL, some guys just are here to get paid. Man,
Let's keep it real paid. Who've been keeping moving? You

(28:37):
don't see that at b YU. I mean I'm serious,
I'm being honest. AJ is like an example of that.
And I'm going and I say that now because of
the high level of talent, but I'm gonna go a
step even further, Gigor. You know, like i'd ask them
about how is your faith grown since you've been here?
Because I remember here from Moscow Rusher takes a chance,
comes over here, very young, right, No family, Travis Hanson

(28:59):
underneath his next thing, you know, look what the kid becomes.
You look at aj Hat. He said that on Sports Nation. Oh,
they had signs like the family orientein it beloved, describe
what that's been like for you and why give your pitch?
Why recruits should come play basketball at b YU? And
four Kevin Young.

Speaker 4 (29:16):
Yeah, I mean, first of all, I just got to
give a huge light thanks to my family. They went
to every single away game this year, which is a
huge sacrifice. My dad's a loan officer, So definitely the
housing market and all that isn't great, So there's definitely
a lot of sacrifices that have been made by them,
So I'm super grateful for them and just supporting me
no matter where it was or when it was, they

(29:38):
were there. My sister Biley, she also you know, came
to every game, which is awesome.

Speaker 5 (29:44):
She was a huge support as well.

Speaker 4 (29:45):
And then obviously my wife, My wife is you know,
over and beyond. She's done everything for me. We've we've
been injured together. You know, she was there, she was
you know, doing that with me, doing all my rehab,
helping me with that, and then to be able to
experience this year with her, she sacrificed a lot of
time with her business. You know, she's a pretty much
a sole you know owner with her bridle story, and

(30:06):
to be able to have her you know, take a
step back with that dream and to be able to
support me with this is you know, I can't say
thanks enough to her. She's also been somebody that I
can be able to, you know, lean on, especially with
you know, basketball is a long season. It's also a
mental season, so she's helped me you know, stay staying,
you know, saying and help me to you know, keep
my confidence high. And then her parents obviously have been

(30:28):
a huge support as well. They came out to the
SA Tournament. They came out all the way out to
New York as well, so they satificed a time to
be able to support me even though they didn't know
really what basketball was when we first got married. So
they definitely kind of go two feet in with that,
which is awesome. And then if you talk about Cougar Nation,
this is my pitch for all the recruits, Like if
you want to go.

Speaker 5 (30:48):
Where you're loved, where every game is sankly a home game.

Speaker 4 (30:52):
And then you get a coaching staff that, like Coach
Young talks about, it's not hypothetical. You know, we have
strength coach I played or I you know, did all
this stuff in the NBA, a nutritionist to with Danielle who's.

Speaker 5 (31:05):
Was in the NBA.

Speaker 4 (31:06):
You have Coach Young, you have all these assistant coaches
that literally will give the right on to help you,
you know, get to where you are. I mean, I'm
kind of like the poster child for that right now
with my assistant coaches and Coach Young trying to help
me find a good agent to be able to go overseas.

Speaker 5 (31:20):
So if you want to go pro, I mean, I
don't think there's a better spot for you to go
except for here, So super grateful for by, super good
for all the coaches.

Speaker 4 (31:28):
You know, it's fun because you have the you have
the super competitiveness when you're on the court, and as
soon you step off the court, it's like your family.
I remember, I've had a lot of deep conversations about
you know, family stuff with coaches, about business stuff, about
stuff outside of basketball.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
Which is super refreshing.

Speaker 4 (31:45):
And it just shows that they actually care and they
don't just care about you just because you're an athlete.
So if you want to feel loved, you want to
feel like a family. I feel like the coach is
already built for people here.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
W au Surevin, thank you for that pitch.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
I've as a media member, right and this is something
maybe you and I need to do on the separate side,
going to what it's like, you know, on the opposite
side to be a media member.

Speaker 2 (32:06):
We deal a little bit more into that one our own,
because I think.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
People don't understand even we don't understand your perspective, right
of which everything you guys go to our perspective, you know,
to tell your stories, to be able to tell your story,
Trevor and b Yu basketball story, it's been a great
honor and privilege to be able to cover you of
your time at b YU, the upos and the downs
and everything. You know, there's been good moments, there's been
bad moments. It's all a part of the journey. And

(32:29):
thank you for your pitch. Brother, Thank you for your
time today. We wish you well. Congrats on getting an agent, man.
We look forward to supporting you overseas and when you
come back as a coach.

Speaker 4 (32:39):
Coach, you guys just better be here if I'm a coach,
because then we can really start talking about you know,
so I appreciate you guys.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
If I'm still in the media business, I gotta be
I gotta be careful, Trevin. Uh, you know, once you
become a coach, you know how you know, I got
to go through certain channels. So I just got to
make sure I go through the proper channels, and everything
really started.

Speaker 5 (32:58):
Talking about exactly. I feel you on that.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
Trav brother. We love you, We support you, man. Thank
you for your time today. Enjoy the rest of your
summer and day.

Speaker 5 (33:07):
Hi, thank you so much, a so much for having me.

Speaker 4 (33:09):
You know, go Ko's and like you said, like even
you know, you guys are families.

Speaker 5 (33:13):
So I respect all you guys and thank you for everything.

Speaker 2 (33:15):
Of course, brother, Okay, we love you man. We'll let
you go enjoy the rest of their peace out.

Speaker 5 (33:19):
Appreciate you.

Speaker 1 (33:20):
That was Trevor nell Man Brett. We've already been in
this interview for a minute. But this is what you
mean by storytelling, right. We obviously wren't prepare some topics,
but I want to tell the fans and be honest.

Speaker 2 (33:32):
We you know that was most of that was all natural. Well.

Speaker 3 (33:35):
It was funny because we asked him before, like you
ask people when they come on. I'm happy to have
them so far happy something, or they want to talk
about something, you just asked them. We asked Trevin. We said, hey,
is there anything you want us to toss up to
you to talk about? And he said, no, I trust
you guys. Let's just go with the vibe.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
And uh. There's no one who's more of a vibe
to b Yu.

Speaker 3 (33:54):
There's no one who's more core for to b Yu
yep uh than than Trevin now. And and it is
it's sad to see him go because he's been here
for what feels like forever. And I mean that in
the best way. Possible. So it is he is. He
was the heart and soul at the center. It didn't
show up on the box score ever, but it always

(34:15):
always showed up in the game irrespective of that. So
it is we salute and we hats off to Trevin.

Speaker 1 (34:22):
Now we salute we support you Trevin and everything that
you've been through. And like Brett said, trust, trust is
the biggest thing that Trev and I obviously we were
sitting in front of each other, we'd be able to
see each other and maybe not overlap and cut each
other off. But Trev, it's been a privilege. And I
won't tell you the off the record conversations we have.
That's private, right, but I've been able to have some.
And when he says, I trust you guys, like you said, Brett,

(34:44):
that's something in this business that's very hard to earn.
It's very hard to earn someone's trust, right, It's very
hard to earn our coaches trust. You look at the
guys on the national level trust, right, you know, so
you look at that in that regard, and that's why
you have to get to know these players, tell their stories.
You can't just judge everything what you see without finding
out who it is like. When you find out more

(35:06):
about his injury, you understand what that was like mentally,
his steep blue. It's all bigger than just the game
of basketball. So you heard it from Trevor nil If
you want to get developed, want to play at a
high level, if you want to even go overseas, get
a good agent, if you want to get your degree,
if you want to be loved by the fan base
and family BYU is the place. Not my words, Trevor
Nils didn't prep him for that. He said that there, guys,
