Welcome in six foot three, one hundred and ninety Powder
out of Faith Lutheran high level three star with over
twenty plus offers from FBS schools. Let's welcome in Matthew
Mason to the show. Matthew, how the heck are you, buddy?

Speaker 4 (01:37):
I'm doing great. Thank you for having me.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Hey, pleasure blessing having you on our airwaves.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
How does it feel to know where you're gonna be
bawling out for your collegiate career?

Speaker 4 (01:45):
Matthew, Man, it really feels amazing, because I mean, it
was just all getting stressful getting down to the end
of it making the decision. Then now I just know
where home is. I can focus on getting better this
offseason and balling out my senior year and being at
DYU to go.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
How would you describe your recruiting process to those that inquire, Like, hey,
what was it like getting recruited? You know, the good,
the bad, the ugly of it all.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
I mean, for me, it was really amazing, just because
it's in my dream since I was really little. So
obviously there's stuff that gets annoying, just when coaches are
hitting your phone every day from different schools and it's
like call after call after call. But I mean you
just got to deal with it. And at the end
of the day, it's like growing up. I mean, you
cut off the schools that so there's some schools that

(02:35):
would talk to me and obviously they're not interested in them,
so it's kind of hard to tell them than that.
But then it's just getting closer to obviously being at BYU.
So like whenever I had cut down to the bottom four,
make the calls let them know that I was coming
to the b YU is a little stressful, but it's
what I have to do to be here, and I'm
happy to be in this position.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Why was BYU the right school for you? Matthew?

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Give us some of the key to it's key components
of why you chose to commit to BYU.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Definitely the people there. I mean Coach Hill the main
person to talk to me, and just building the trust
with him. I didn't feel that with any other coach.
There's a lot of great coaches that recruited me, but
he just felt the most genuine and had a direct
plan for me to compete and play early, and that's
definitely what I want to do. I know, if the
coach promises you a starting spots, probably not very legit.

(03:26):
And he told me that I'm definitely gonna have to compete,
but he believes in my ability to do that and
helped team get to the playoffs, which obviously they haven't
been able to do yet.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
Matthew, I've read an article that you have actually attended
a BIU game. You went to the USF game and
back in twenty twenty one.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Is that right?

Speaker 4 (03:43):
Yes, So my uncle he was actually the head coach
at South Florida, So I was sitting in their section
when I came to that game. But just being there,
all the fans were amazing. I mean, they're bringing us
food during the game, super nice. But then the atmosphere
during the game. It was one of the loudest games
I've ever been to, and I've been to some big games.
I mean I went to Clemson versus Alabama in the playoffs,

(04:06):
went to Texas A and M game, and obviously those
are none for big crowds. In YU was just as
loud as that.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
Did usf try to get you at all, since your
uncle's head coach over there or is he still the
head coach there?

Speaker 4 (04:18):
He's not there anymore, so they hit me up. But
it was kind of later in the process when I
was focused on some other schools. But yeah, he so
he used to coach at Clemson before South Florida, and
I talked to Clemson a little bit, but that didn't
really go anywhere.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
So well, excited to have you be a part of
Cougar Nation. Explain to us, you know where you grew up,
how you grew up. Give us a little background on
parents family. Who is Matthew Mason. Who's the Mason family?

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Yes, sure, so my dad's side in my family, they
all grew up in Florida in the South. I mean,
he lived in Louisiana, Mississippi, and that's where I ended
up growing up in Florida for ten years until I
moved out to Texas for two years and then out
here in Vegas for the last five years. So I've
been around a couple of places, and my mom's from Hawaii,
so my family has all different types of culture in it.

(05:10):
But I mean, just being in Florida, obviously, the athletes
out there are different, and I feel like that helped
me develop into just the type of athlete I am today,
with the speed and physicality playing with dogs down there
and bringing that out here to Vegas and not be
bringing to BYU. But yeah, I mean it's it's crazy.
I never really envisioned myself doing the DYU because being

(05:32):
from Florida, it's totallys just about the South schools. But
then being out here, I see BYUS as big as
any winning Obviously, that's why I want to go to
get them to the next level and play in the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
How familiar were you with BYU growing up and into
your young adulthood. It's a faith sponsored institution, obviously the church.
Did you just Christ of Latter day Saints?

Speaker 4 (05:54):
Like?

Speaker 2 (05:54):
You know, how familiar are you with BYU throughout your life?

Speaker 4 (06:00):
I wouldn't say I was super familiar growing up until
I moved out here to the West Side. And I
mean hearing just how big of the deal they are
out here, and their physicality is a program with Pusataki
and I mean, I was just super impressive moment I
heard them. Obviously, when I went out to that game,
my dad just told me he could see me playing here.
And then four years later, I'm committed there. So that's

(06:22):
pretty crazy how that words. But yeah, that's how I
didn't get really familiar until I moved out to the
West Coast.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
You're a part of faith Lutheran religious private school.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Uh, you know what faith denomination?

Speaker 2 (06:35):
I don't know if you you you ascribed to any
particular faith, but obviously b YU is a faith based institution.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
What do you know about that? And uh? And then
what faith do you guys?

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Maybe, Uh, do you guys lean into within the family?

Speaker 4 (06:51):
Yes, sir, so our family is a Christian family. I
know Mormon's a little bit different to that, but they
still share a lot of the same values, believing in
Jesus Christ, and I just follow all my values based
off of that. So it's a good thing for me
to come here. Even though with the little differences, I'm
excited to I mean, strengthen my faith with God still
and there's a lot of players on the team to

(07:12):
have different beliefs, and I'm just excited to be able
to grow my safe at BYU.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Love that.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Man, Who have you gotten to know on the roster?
Who have you been able to align with and maybe
get to know on the roster?

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Man? I mean pretty much the whole dB group. Whenever
I was there, I got to talk to a lot
of them. But my host on the visit was Peyton,
So it was cool to talk to him. And I mean,
he's told me he loved it, and I could definitely
get really down there it's with everything, and I could
relate to him a lot of things he talked about
and he's a part of the church and I'm not.
And he told me like they're all super supportive about everything,

(07:50):
and I just felt like already a part of a
family whenever I was around all of them.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah, what stood out to you about the recruiting visits?

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Right? Like, what is it about kind of the the
the entire ensemble if you will, of BYU's football program
that that really attracted you and closed you on the deal.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Definitely, all the people. I mean, they have a lot
of great things, the facilities of the stadium, just knowing
how many people are going to be watching you, and
the people around me supporting you, but all the coaches
and players, they just they let you know that they
care more about you as a person than a player.
And that's really important to me, knowing that people actually
caring about me and not just sort of playing for
a business, like how college football is becoming today. So,

(08:33):
I mean, whenever I got there and really felt the
genuine this between everybody, that's just when I knew I
was ready to commit.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Mentioned this game has becomeing more of a business. Everyone
talks about nil. How important is nil to you? And
or was it to you in this process?

Speaker 4 (08:52):
It definitely wasn't a very important thing to me. I mean, obviously,
with your talent and how players are today, you want
to get the most money you can get, So that's
not the most important thing to me. I was happy
with whatever they were gonna give me, because I mean,
there's a market out there, so certain players get certain money,
and I was fine with that because it's whatever you earn.

(09:12):
But I mean, it's definitely a cool part and being
able to get get money now and make a lot
of money playing the sports that I love at an
early level in college, not just in the NFL. But
it wasn't a very big part of my decision at all.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Matthew Mason three star defensive bag committed to BYU six
three one ninety great length, athleticism, Love how you run
the alley. I've evaluated your film and I love that
you like to put all that hit stick. You like
to get that gidea up and utilize that that speed
of yours to make offensive players pay. When you watch

(09:47):
your film, what do you see? What do you like
about your game?

Speaker 4 (09:51):
I would definitely say my ability to play all overfield.
I mean, I had schools recruiting at all different positions
and BYU, what I like about them recruiting is they're
putting me at free safety. But I can do all
those different spots on the field in just being able
to come off the edge, playing the box, playing the post,
play in the middle of the field, everywhere. Just I'm
just excited to be able to make plays and obviously

(10:13):
with my speed, it will allow me to create a
lot of turnovers and like you said hard hits, which
is the thing I love most about football.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
What other positions were these programs recruiting you to.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
What did they see you integrating.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Was it mostly on the defense side of the ball,
or some recruiting you on the offensive side of the ball.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Give us some detail.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
It was all defense. I mean schools. The main position
was obviously safety, but every school had a different version
of the safety somewhere truting me as a nickel, some
is a strong safety, some as a I mean even
playing outside back or inside backer. And then there's even
some schools I think thinking I could grow into a
defensive end, which is a long way that I'm just

(10:54):
excited for playing safety obviously, that's what I believe in myself,
but I believe I could play anywhere on the field.
That's what I like most about my game.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Love that breakdown.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Matthew Mason here on ESPN the Fan, Matthew, Outside of football,
where do you.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Spend your time? What do you like to do? What
are the extra curriculars?

Speaker 4 (11:14):
I really just like spending time with my friends. I
mean that's one of the reason why I think our
team last year for my Faith Lutheran team had such
good success because all of our teamates were always spending
time with each other, whether it's going to movies, going
to swim, just being outside with each other. It really
grows a bond with the team. And so that's really
what I did the most, just anything of my friends
getting food. I'm a big food person, I'd say, also,

(11:37):
so just trying this food is something I'd love to do.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
He's a foodie.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
You give them reviews after the food places, you know,
you kind of break it, break it down, or you
just like to eat it and pay for it and
then take off.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
I mean, I give it reviews sometimes I'm not a
picky either, they'd all. So, I love a lot of food.
So it's really just trying new things. And I mean
I'm going to meet many sink I like it. Have
you uh?

Speaker 2 (12:02):
I mean Vegas, you got you got pretty good? Uh,
I would say, I'd say options pretty good, options of
different food places along the strip, et cetera. Have you
been able to try out any of the cuisine here
in Utah.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
I'm on my visit. They say that fed us a
lot of good food. One of my favorite things we
had for breakfast was this cheesecake stuff French toast. It
was amazing. They had like strawberry and blueberry and there's
one of the best breakfasts I've ever had.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
I like it.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Man, Hey, you got to feed the body, get the
nutrients in your body to get bigger, faster, stronger as
a football player.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Now, Matthew, what do you want to study?

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Obviously, academics that faith Lutheran is is a priority at
b YU, it's also priority.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
What do you want to study?

Speaker 4 (12:49):
Yes, sir, so I'm not completely sure yet, but I
know it will be something in business. I always want
to be an entrepreneur and run my own business, so
it will be something business related, but I'm not fully
set on that decision yet. I've also thought about joining
the coaching after football, so that's something that I want
to be prepared for in and obviously by you can
set you up preature that after in football.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
As it relates to football skill set, where do you
feel like you need to make the most improvement before
arriving at by you in order to be an impactful
player your freshman year.

Speaker 4 (13:22):
I would say, once I get the ball in my hands,
just making plays with it. A lot of times I
would get the ball and just run with my speed
and I'll be able to control that. In this offseason,
I've worked a lot on slowing down and accelerating, so
being able to once I get the ball and make
big plays and bring it back for a touchdown.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
So that'd definitely be what I'd say, like that breakdown,
want to see definitely more that we got Matthew Mason
on the line.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Getting to know him.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
He's he's a commit out of Vegas Faith Lutherans where
he balled out. He had over twenty offers by you
obviously got the commitment, but Arizona State, Boise State, Washington State,
Oregon State, Northway, and many others. We're in the mix
for his talents, his services. Are you going to be
a mid year Matthew? Like, when do you plan on

(14:08):
graduating from high school and enrolling at BYU right now?

Speaker 4 (14:13):
I've been saying is I'm doing summer school classes so
I can graduate in December and then the VI BYU
in January.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
That's awesome, that's exciting. The midyear transfer. Get you involved,
get you into spring ball, and get your balling out
at Brigham as soon as possible. Now, now Jay said, hey,
we want you to be able to come in and
compete immediately that boat's well as a mid year Was
that something you guys discussed, like, Hey, if you want

(14:41):
to compete, you want to win a job that first year,
you got to be a midyear guy.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Yes, sir, I mean he told me it's not a
deal breaker. I could come whenever I want, but getting
there early definitely gives you an advantage over everyone else.
And I just wanted to do that for myself, to
put myself in the best position to start.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Let's get a little bit a more info on the
personal life of Matthew Mason. What's on the on the
playlist right now? What are we jamming out to? What
are we vibe into.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
I've actually been listening to a lot of country music recently,
so Morgan Wallin's would probably be the top guy right now.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Love it man.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
My wife's out a Morgan Wallen kick right now. So
every time we get in the car and Morgan Wallen's playing,
I'm like, oh, this is this is good stuff. This
is good stuff, man. Get you in the get you
in a good mood. Positive vibes, right, positive vibes, ye, definite.
How would you describe your personality Matthew, Like for your friends.
If if I had your friends hop on right now,

(15:39):
how they describe Matthew Mason.

Speaker 4 (15:43):
I think they would say, I'm very I mean, first
of all, funny. I'd like to have fun all the
time and make sure things aren't too serious when people
are getting stressed about something, making them know like it'll
be all right, and just bringing a brighter mood to everything.
But also I think I'm a very honest person, so
I'll just be straight up with my friends and make
sure they know, like I mean, a lot of my

(16:04):
friends obviously they want to follow my steps and make
it to the next level, so I tell them directly
what they got to do. So that's what I'm planning
to do with my teammates and let them know what
they're doing wrong and what they can do they get
to the next level.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Like it, keep it the positive, keeping a light, a
little levity in the room, all great qualities of Matthew Pasin. Matthew,
as far as your your goals this offseason, what goals
do you have this offseason prior to kicking off your
senior season at Faith Lutheran.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
My goal is this offseason as far as physical stuff,
I mean I've already last year I put I put
on twenty times a way. That was one goal for me.
I was one set last year. Now I'm at one
to ninety and I haven't gotten slower at off I've
actually last year I ran a four or five to two.
This year I'm running a four four five. Physicality is
gonna be on a whole another level. So I'm just
I mean, this year it would just be to I mean,

(17:00):
being the enforcer in every game. I don't have super
specific goals as far as stats and stuff, because I
think the film shows more than stats. Obviously, I've had
a lot of stats in my last two years. But
then I guess if there was one thing that'd be
getting more interceptions, that's one thing, creating turnovers, like I
definitely forced a lot of fumbles, but getting the ball
in the air, now that is a really run heavy offensive,

(17:21):
so it's hard to do that sometimes. But we'll be
playing some talented teams this year and just taking the
ball away from them.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
You bring up some interesting points about high school ball
there in Vegas and and maybe the competition and what
they tend to focus on down there, what like how
good is Faith Lutheran going to be this season. What's
the potential for this team to maybe win a championship.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Well, we lost a lot of seniors last year. We
lost thirty five I think, and a lot of them
were starter so it's gonna be a big rebuilding. But
I think it's me and our other safety Gavin can
just lead the defense and then help the offense by
making them better on competing, we can do anything. I mean,
it's really you can't tell with numbers because it's a

(18:09):
completely different team this year, so everyone just has to
work hard. But I think our team can do great
things if we just work hard together.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
I on the prize gotta, you know, focus on the
best return on investment, getting bigger, faster, stronger, and you know,
bringing up the youth man with when you're replacing thirty
plus seniors like that, you got a youth movement going on.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
That means the leadership has.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
To get the young bucks, those juniors and sophomore sometimes
even freshmen to step up and kind of seize the day.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
What do you do in order to be a great leader?

Speaker 4 (18:42):
I mean, first of all, leading by example, just doing
everything the right way and helping them know that. I mean,
if they make mistakes is not a big deal, because
everyone makes mistakes, especially when you're young. Can We're just
gonna get better as a team. And I let them
know that because a lot of people are kind of
nervous because most of our team last year with seniors
and juniors, and then now we have some freshmen, like

(19:03):
you said, and sophomores playing which had never played varsity
football before. I'm just letting them know. Bit. I mean,
if you make mistakes, it's all good. And I just
keep working out and everything will work out. And follow
what the coaches tell you to do because they have
your best. Insist even though sometimes players not teams that
the coaches are doing them wrong, but the coaches really want.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
The best for you.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
Fat Did did you play any other sports growing up,
If so, what were they?

Speaker 4 (19:29):
Yes, Sir, I used to play baseball when I was younger.
I was actually a pitcher. When I lived in Florida.
Our team won the state championship for TENU and that
was my last year playing baseball. I just once I
moved to Texas, I played basketball a little bit and
then football. I always stuck with football, but football and
basketball were it for up until high school, and then

(19:51):
in high school I ran track for a little bit,
but it didn't work out this year, just with all
the bidets I was going on, so I just stuck
with football. Bit. If I could have played those sports,
more would have because playing different sport definitely helps you
with different skills and it's a lot of fun to do.
But baseball, I'm still a big baseball guy. I mean,
I'm watching the World Series right now, and I could
have stuck with that. I mean, if I could be

(20:12):
a multi multi sport athlete in college, that'd be amazing.
But that's our thing to do.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
It is tough to do.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
It takes, you know, a certain amount of It takes
a special player, and it takes special coaches too to
allow it.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
That's the thing, you know.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
It's a it's a it's a two way street, no
doubt about it. Matthew Mason, three star commit from Faith Lutheran,
got him on the line here getting to know him.
A couple last things before we let you go, Matthew,
appreciate you joining us so we can get to know you,
introduce you to our fan base. I always asked this
question in the modern era. I know nil hasn't been
a hasn't been the biggest priority for you. But you

(20:48):
mentioned you love food, and so there's always anil opportunities
for college athletes and food places, restaurants, et cetera. Are
there any other products services bus this is that you'd
like to align with once you get when you touchdown
in Provo.

Speaker 4 (21:07):
I would probably say, if it's possible, some sort of truck.
I mean, I've always wanted to. Right now, I drive
a card, but I always wanted to be a truckerson
out there in Utah. The truck is a lot more useful.
So as anyway I could do that somehow, that would
be amazing, all right.

Speaker 3 (21:22):
Food in the truck. He's a simple man. Simple man.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
We're listening to Morgan Wallin, you know, driving his truck.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
Baby's got a.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
Cowboy hat on and he's eating delicious food.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
That's all he's It's a vibe. Yeah, it's a vibe.
All right, Matthew.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
We appreciate you man, thanks for hopping on this segment,
letting us get to know you and introducing you to
our fan base. We'll catch up with again soon and
we'll be watching as you finish off your your senior
season at Faith Lutheran.

Speaker 4 (21:54):
Yes, sir, thank you, thank you for having me.

Speaker 2 (21:56):
Hey much much much appreciated. That's Matthew Mason Guys commentary
follow up. That was a crewit in the Cougar segment
with Matthew Mason.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
Did you know you were quoting Morgan Wallam when you
said that?

Speaker 1 (22:06):
Yeah, okay, you just did that all that.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
I was like, that was incredible.

Speaker 1 (22:11):
That's why I that lifestyle. That's I was hoping he'd
give me something back. But it's okay, But no, I
mean he's gonna fit right.

Speaker 3 (22:20):
When you're asking for me or Matthew to give you other.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
Matthew, but I was looking at you. You got it
because you laughed because your wife plays the song.

Speaker 3 (22:27):
Yeah, he's always so.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
I played it so you knew you made the face
of I was hoping he gave me a little some Anyway.

Speaker 3 (22:31):
The point is staying on the Morgan wall train. He's
living the right lifestyle.

Speaker 5 (22:34):
Ben.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
He's focused on football and going back to the other sports.
He was a pitcher baseball, and he's he said to himself,
we we've heard it from John back Brady, we heard
it from the athlete. I I wish i'd played, you
know more if I could, but that helped you with
other sports.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
How many guys do we see track athletes?

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Evan Johnson right, that speed that matters, So you have
to talk about these football guys that are playing different sports.
So you've pitched it. Play as many as you can
us on the one where you get the high school.
But I'm going to try to put my kids in
everything because it does cross over.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
I think we buried the lead a little bit. The
man runs a four four five four d crazy. Anytime
you're four four nine is still ridiculous. Anytime you're under
four five, I mean anytime you're under four like that's
blazing speed, especially for a kid coming out of high school.

Speaker 3 (23:22):
I loved what he said though.

Speaker 5 (23:23):
He said he wants to get better with the ball
in his hands because it's not just about being fast,
it's about being fast at the right times. And he
said a lot of times he would get the ball
and he would just take off to the races, and
a lot of times, you know this, Ben, you get
an interception.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
Everybody's got to get set You kind of have.

Speaker 5 (23:38):
To work with things as they go away for things
to blocks to set up and know and when to
slow down and win to speed up. So it'll be
really incredible to see Matthew Mason. I also love that
he teased that there's been people who said he should
move to d End again.

Speaker 3 (23:50):
I don't know if he moves to d End, but
he could certainly. Maybe he plays like.

Speaker 5 (23:53):
A little bit of an Isaiah Glasger role where he
plays like a linebacker safety hybrid. Big things, the speed,
the side, the things you just can't teach. Matthew Mason's
got it.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
Got some great tools, great clay. That segment. Guys appreciate
Matthew Mason joining us. Great segment here and you know,
big cougar war to him. I really like this kid,
I really do. I was impressed by him, liked what
I heard from him, and can't wait to see him
develop under the Tuteligit J Hill. That segment was brought

(24:26):
to you by Primo Golf, a Barrel Promo, Golf Apparel
dot Com, Polos Quarters, It's best, you name it, they
