Cougar came to Provo last week, the signing of Kadar
Davis Junior, the six to six guard. We were waiting
on it for it to be official. These things happen,
you know, guys finishing school sometimes you know, maybe waivers
academic things need to get worked out. This one took
longer than normal, but he is officially a cougar. He

(01:06):
is here. He'll be adjoining the BA staff. I think
they have two more scholarships available with his house versus
NCAA settlement still going on. Jerrem McGregor in Townsend, excuse me,
not towns and trip. I gotta up saying that Max Triplet.
That's the third time I've done that. Triple and triple.
That's pretty triple triple. I no, yeah, triplet and triple
is bad, so triple T and then you know the
triplet name. Anyway, Jere McGregor and Max Triplet are still

(01:27):
a walk on. So two scholarships are still available. Kevin
Young caught up with Mitch HARPERTHKSL dot com. You can
catch that stuff on their website, but he had mentioned
what they would do with those. There are some international guys.
Maybe that they're looking at other guys in the pipeline.
We don't know. I think the rosters fulfilled now that
Canard is here. I think that's your ten to eleven
man rotation. I could be wrong about that. We'll see

(02:30):
I talked to this guy a few weeks ago. We
were waiting for it to get solidified. Now we got
them on the line. You heard him last season when
BYU played SIU and football. We got the voice of
the Sulukis. We got Luke Martin on the line, Luke,
thanks for joining us today.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Oh it's good to be with you guys. Thanks so
much for the time. And mean, you know, with it
being June second, it's hard to think basketball, right but
Selukis just had their first I guess team workout this
morning and.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
It's basketball season fouls. I mean, this thing doesn't.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Start later on August or September. It really gets going now,
so it's never too early for basketball conversation.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
The weird thing about by U basketball is transfers is
that all of them have come from a team that
BOU played last season. Except for basketball play Southern Illinois basketball,
they did play them in.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Football still there in town. That's crazy. I don't think
I've seen it before.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Oh man, No, it was great, you know, being back
with football obviously last year, that was an amazing environment.
And you know, of course hanging into the year, no
one right, I mean.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
The expectations, expectations for b YU football are always high.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Uh. I don't know if anyone knew that they'd be
knocking on the door of the college football Playoff, which
they did.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
And you know, SLUKI fans look bad on it, you
know what. DJ Williams actually had a pretty good day.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Pretty good.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
They have to be pretty stout, you know.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
A halftime I was at time, I looked and I said, Ben,
we need to talk to Luke. I don't he's calling
the game, but we need to text him and say, hey,
from your Utah friends, scraped the game plan. Tuck down
and run. They can't stop them. They're having an issue
containing them right now. Don't throw the football, run the
dang football, and hey, you might cut into this lead.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
He was, but it was it was It was fun
and you know DJ being back. He unfortunately had a
season any injury about two three weeks later, and that
really derailed the Suluki football season last year. Had to
have a ga come back and be our quarterback at
the end of the year, had that many injuries.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
It was that's not what you want to talk about.
But man, it was awesome.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
The people out there, a pro bow man like, that's
an experience. I really hope that we can get the
experience again because it was.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
It was awesome.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
It was a lot of fun to start the season.
Definitely one of the best environments I've ever been a
part of.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Yeah, it's definitely one of the best in college football
and basketball. I know you went the football you but
imagine inside of the Marriott Center and now that they
have the number one recruit in the twenty twenty five class,
imagine what it's going to be like. And they had
celebrities last year. I assume more will attract. And you
think of their non conference schedule building up. They're going
out to his hometown, you know, home State over there

(05:09):
and they're going to New York. Right, That's what happens
when you draw a big prospect like that. But you
got to get experience on a guy that is now
on the team. It's official. Had to wait for things
because you know, with the landscape of like we talked
about with College of Basketball, anything can happen. But Canard
Davis junior officially Cougar. You got eyes up close and

(05:30):
personal of Canard. How would you describe Canard as a player.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
You know, Canard spent my two years here with the
two years he was a part of SIU. And when
I first got here, you know, hard to believe going
in the year three now here in Carbondale, but I
had and it was consistent, whether it was other coaches
I talked through throughout the Missouri Valley Conference that recruited
Canard or the staff that was here presently before coach

(05:55):
Nagy and his staff came over.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
They told me instantly said.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Luke, maybe not right away his freshman year, by guarantee
you by year two and if not year three, he
has the potential to be one of, if not the
best defender in the Missouri Valley Conference in southern Illinois.
Their history is a program has kind of always been
kind of hanging their hat, their work hat on defense.

(06:21):
That's been a staple for Sluki basketball for a long time.
They called him floor burned you back in the two
thousands when they made six straight NCAA tournaments, and you
know that they were a name. They were a program
that people knew and how they played it was grinded out,
physical defensive style from Bruce Weber to Matt Painter to
Chris Lowry who kept that going and Brian Mullens, who

(06:44):
was a player on those teams and those big two thousands.
He originally recruited Canard to come to SIU. Coach Mullens
was let go after Canard's freshman year. Last year, Coach
Naggy came in for year one, and Canard's year was
a little unique because there was a significant injury early
in the year. Elijah Elliott, who was the starting point
guard for SIU, tore his acl against Florida, and after

(07:09):
that point Southern really never had a point guard. Cannard
Davis had to step into that role. And Canard's not
typically you know, you would say, hey, that is a
typical point guard, but he had to play that role
for SIU and just really learn things on the fly.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
And you look at Canard's numbers.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Man, everybody has always known, as I told you, defensively,
he is just so skilled and a lot of that
just has to do with his effort and his attitude
and his embracing of the defensive mindset. But while he
was able to show last year, guys the differences between
the seasons, he's got some offensive game two and that

(07:47):
was no doubt a much bigger jump when you look
at his point production all that.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Yes, he had more opportunities.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yes, Xavier Johnson, who was just the phenomenal score his
freshman year, who averaged over twenty points again, one of
the leading scorers in the country, he was gone. Someone
had to fill that void, but it wasn't just a
void being filled, if that makes sense. Counard really filled
it well and raised his game to a whole other level,
probably to a level honestly that not many coaches that

(08:15):
originally recruited. They always liked him, but maybe didn't see
him as a sixteen to seventeen points per game guy
in the Missouri Valley Conference, and he obviously proved that
this past year.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
What do you feel like changed in his game, specifically
between how he played last season and picking up the
point guard Roland having to add some things to the
tool belt.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, I think honestly, you know when you look at
Canard's game and what really transpired for him last year,
Like I look at his season early like his early
season was okay, but in early January there were just
some off the court stuff that he was not handling well.
And Scott and Eggy benched him for our game against

(08:57):
Illinois State, and I think it was like a January fifth.
Canard did not play that.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
Day and it was a brutal day.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
I mean, the Suluki's got thirty ball, It was not close,
it was an ugly game, and Canard have to sit
and watch and from that point on Cannard was a
different leader. Canard was a different teammate. He was also
you just saw him raise his level of play and
competitis to a whole nother level. I think a lot

(09:27):
that was the improvement in terms of knowing what the
expectation is of carrying yourself as a player, and it's
not just hey, what are you showing.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Us in practice? There are more areas.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
To this, and there are more things that are valued
than just can you put the ball in the hoop?
Can you stop buddy, stop somebody from scoring? All those things,
no doubt matter and are no doubt extremely valuable and important.
But there's more things to this piece of the puzzle.
For Canard specifically, and not just for Canard but for everybody.
There's more to it than just rolling a basketball out

(10:01):
on the floor and going and playing. So to answer
your quite like, what were the areas for him? I
just think his growth and understanding of man like it's
time for me to really seize control of this, Like
it's not, Oh, I'm a sophomore. I still got to
wait my turn, Like, no, you have the capability to
go out there and perform at a high level. You're

(10:22):
not just a really good defender. We've always known that
your efforts there. Go out there and be a little
bit more aggressive. Early on the year, he was a little,
I don't want.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
To say timid.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
He needed to get that right level of selfishness if
you understand what I mean by that.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
And you know he was a good distributor of.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
The basketball, but Canard had to look and be willing
to miss a shot every once in a while and
be like, hey, you got to go be aggressive and
it's okay if you're taking X amount of shots because
you should be taking those shots because you're extremely valued
as part of the team. And once he got to
that point, that's where you saw his best games towards

(10:59):
the end of the year year and really towards that
middle of the Missouri Valley Conference season.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
That's when Canard was playing at his peak.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
What does it say about it his character? You bring
up a very valid point. I feel sometimes when things
not related to basketball, detractors, as they may say, get
in the way. Sometimes you know, things don't always go
well mentally for a player, or it even derails their career.
Let's just be honest. Human nature, human life is a
real thing. We can't ignore that, But what does it

(11:27):
say about Canard? A lot of players don't look inward
and say, hey, I need to be a better leader,
and then they embrace that and then they thrive after that.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Well, the season could have gone multiple different ways. Guys.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
You know when Canard was benched against Illinois State. That
was during the stretch where Southern started off zero to
four in league play and they lost all four of
those games like ugly.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
I mean, they were not even close. Then they went on.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
The road to Bellmont when Canard came back, they still
lost that game, but were really competitive Southern after starting
zero to five.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
I can't remember the exact numbers in my head, but.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
They would go on to win like nine to the
next eleven and at least got themselves into the middle
pack of the league.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
And it's not all because of Canar Davis. It was
a team.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
I don't want to make it all out on Canard,
but to answer your question specifically, if Canard did not
handle that situation well or if he did not have
the aware thought to be like, man, there's things that
I got to change. If one not just for me
to be better, but for our team to get to
a better point.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
I have to really look in the mirror.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
If he didn't do that correctly, Southern season, what was
already a really tough start at the league play would
have gotten much uglier.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
It did not.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
And there are many guys who deserve credit, and Canard
Davis is no question one of those guys who deserves
credit for being able to say, hey, I know I'm
not living up to that standard right now, I need
to raise it to a different level. And man, Southern,
really they got on his back, and a lot of
his teammates got on his back, and there were definitely
some masterful games the watch of his that were, you know,

(13:14):
sit in courtside and having that seat in Van Tero
or wherever we were across the Missouri Valley Conference. He
was one of the best guys to watch in the
league last year, especially with him getting paired up with
Ali Diva, who had a really good season too. But
Knard deserves a lot of credit. Guys he does for
knowing that, hey, you're not playing the day because you're

(13:35):
not living up to our standards day to day. And
he came back and he was his best version, and
to me, that's what says everything you need to know
about an individual. If you can go through that type
of experience, that shows you that you got some toughness,
you got some grit about you that you really can't
put a value on.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
Yeah, and when you add in the ability and willingness
to just be a Swiss army knife and and say yes, coach,
I got it. I can go do that. I know
that's not my job. I know that's not the contract
I signed, but I'll figure it out. I'll go do
it to me. That says everything I think every there's
there's I'm sure there's not a coach in America that wouldn't.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
Say yes to a guy just like that.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
And b what, you kind of had one of those
guys last year in a WIT mag who wasn't necessarily
the sexiest number one overall pick or anything like that,
but he was their lockdown defender.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
He made the game when he played at the end
of the Wisconsin game.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Hearing you talk about Canard's character, his willingness to fit
into different roles, slide around, move around, just do whatever
he's asked, that almost makes me think there is a
possibility that Cannard Davis in that role could start on
this bou basketball team, he is.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
A guy that is not going to be the most voistious.
He's a pretty quiet individual, and you know his actions
on the floor, no doubt speak volumes and can speak loudly.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
But for Canard off.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
The floor, you know he'll be a guy that kind of,
you know, does his own thing and not necessarily going
to be the one that's going to be the loudest
guy around the team or in those practice settings.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
He's a little he's very more reserved in that way.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
But man, when he gets that opportunity to compete, I mean, guys,
you can all whether you want to say it's the
greatest value or not, some guys just sweat because they
just they don't know anything else other than to sweat.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
It's not always the greatest.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Gauge, but man, I'm telling you, when you would go
to the Suluki practice Canard Davis, you could tell how
hard he was playing and the effort level he would
put and even in games just by looking at his
jersey and how there was no dry part of that uniform.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
And I think that's what's always.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
Stuck with him and something he's always been good at
and is channeled in the right way. Everybody has internal expectations,
and I am sure if I called Canard today, you
would tell me the expectations he has of going to BYU.
And what I hope is whether, hey, can he be
a starter?

Speaker 3 (16:07):
Can you do?

Speaker 5 (16:07):
Is?

Speaker 3 (16:07):
Can you do that?

Speaker 2 (16:08):
He's just got to show up and be who he is.
And if he shows up and he is who he
is and he plays with that level of intensity that
he's really always had and he just takes it to
another level and almost still carries that blue collar chip
that a lot of mid major guys carry. A man,
I don't think I get the respect level of so

(16:30):
and so from a bigger league. There have obviously been
guys within the Missouri Valley over the years that have
transferred and gone up and have performed really well. And
it's been a league that has shown over time guys
can leave, transfer up and have great success. Canard wants
to be one of those guys that can do it,

(16:50):
and I think for him, he's just got to continue
to just follow that path of what's been successful for him,
which is just that, you know, typical blue collar hard work, determination,
doing a lot of little things, being a guy that's
gonna take pride and stopping you from scoring, and then
if he can just raise that offensive game even more,

(17:12):
the ability to score against those type of elite defenders
that you're gonna see. I think there's no question, guys,
he's gonna be able to defend.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
At a really high level.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
It's just can he raise that offensive game even more,
because there is, no doubt a huge difference in averaging,
you know, fifteen plus points in the Missouri Valley Conference,
so than trying to carry that over to the Big twelve.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
Luke, you almost wonder if there will be a lot
less pressure on him because of what this BUYU team
already brought last year. They're bringing in to top fifty recruits.
I almost wonder maybe he gets better this season because
there's less pressure for him to carry.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
Yeah, I mean, to your guys' point, when he was here,
he was the guy, local kid Saint Louis. You know
everyone when you kind of walking around campus, everyone knows
who you are, and in a way, that's a great thing.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
And Canard was a very special player. Our fan base.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
Everybody really embraced him and got behind him and was
a huge supporter of him.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
I don't want to speak for him at all.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
This is completely me and kind of adding on to
what you guys just kind of set me up for
I do think that will be a really.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
Good thing for him.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
It's not to say, and I don't want to come
across as hey, he's a guy that could not handle
that pressure.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
He obviously could and it showed.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
But I think now not necessarily quote unquote being the
guy or being necessary where all the attention is.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
On you at all times.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
I really hope that frees him up and allows him
to even improve even more, because if it does, you
know what, he could he could end up being a
really special player and be a crucial piece to kind
of how I wasn't here when this individual was here,
but a lot like how Lance Jones left SIU to

(19:06):
go to Purdue for coach Peter to proved to be
a pivotal role in that team that went to the
National championship game. Hopefully Canard can use a lot of
those blue collar workman like DNA characteristics that Lance built
during his time here at SIU that Canard built as well.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
He can take that into a program like BYU and
make them better.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
And hey, you got to make it hard for your
coach to look at you, go, man, is it hard
to keep this guy off the floor. And hopefully Canard
in multiple ways can can give them reasons to say, hey,
you know, if you're keeping me off, there better be
a good reason.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
There's got to be.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
Many reasons for me to not be out on that floor.
I got to give everything I have. And I think Canard,
no doubt can be one of those guys. And I
think not not having that pressure of home just right
down the road and all those say pressure pressure is
a privilege and and Knar performed underneath it, but that
could be a major positive for him being away from

(20:08):
that and just can really just get integrated into that
culture at YU.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Yeah, I think he's gonna integrate well. Kevin Young I
think learned after year one, especially in the Big Coven,
to compete for a national championship. When you look at
the likes of Houston or even Duke, defense is a must,
perimeter play as a must. Unique guys that can do that.
When you watch Canar and David Jenius from the first team,
that sticks out is this This dude can switch multiple positions.
He can guard one through four if he even wanted

(20:33):
to go small ball. He can guard one through five.
And with the development their development program under Jordan Brady,
how they develop a what max shot. I have no
doubt with Canard division who can put the ball on
the floor and make a move and get to the
basket and can shoot at a high level of knock
down free throws, He's gonna have a chance. You know.
Right now we know lukedd the the first sure four starters,

(20:54):
no doubt, a Rob Wright, Richie soners Aj Debondson, Kibakta.
I've said Dominiue Diamonde because he's about six eight, you know,
six' nine. Maybe But canard is, There Tyler. Moruss they
they have really worked well in the portal to get.
That and let's transition to there as we finish up with,
You Luke martin here ON espn The, fan the voice
of the sulukis as rely from Our Bandweb. Studios college

(21:16):
basketball and college, football any collision of sport has changed
in the. NATURE i have looked at, it and you
look at any program the. NUMBERS a kid will transfer
twice now before they find their. Home that's just a.
Landscape but with that within il your thoughts on just
where it's. Going do they need a governing body because this,

(21:37):
THING i feel like is just getting out of. Hand
it's getting extremely. RIDICULOUS i want all players to get.
PAID i want you to find the best. Fit but
you may find a kid at four different, schools four different,
years just based on getting. Paid who the biggest buyer.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
Is, well and that's been the more of the. Norm
and you know what's.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
Made you, know WHEN i look back out a lot
of the really good, teams not just The SOUTHERN i,
mean look at.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
Wherever i'm SURE byu is an example what made college.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
Basketball and, look there's no doubt been advancements and you're
getting better caliber of athletes in the game of, basketball et,
cetera no doubt is. Improving AND i don't think it
has anything to do with to your point, of, hey
should guys be paid or. Not, no they should absolutely
get their worth and they no, question should absolutely get.
Paid it has just been a, firestorm, hurricane whatever way you.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
Want to describe.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
It with the transfer, portal the basically transfer any, time
intermixing with nil and all of this all kind of
coming and trying to figure it out all at one
time is what's created this culture and what we're. In
and the, long roundabout way to get back to my
original point was is what was so cool about our
level AND i say our level and collectively as college,

(22:54):
basketball and.

Speaker 3 (22:55):
What was neat was you got to know not just
your own, players but you got to know you're well your.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Teams within the league and guys who would be on
those teams.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
Throughout and that's what made league. Play whether it's The
Big twelve.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
Now FOR, byu whether it's The Missouri Valley conference Where
southern is. At you knew Who Northern iowa, Had you
knew Who drake, had you knew Who bradley, Had Illinois, state.
Etc going through like you embraced that part of league
play because you felt that you knew the opponent as
well as you.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
Knew your own.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
Team and then when you had that opportunity on a
senior night to really appreciate those who came through your
program for, years those environments were so special and what
said IS i can't really. REMEMBER i can't tell. You
and it's not to downgrade any of the guys that
come through your program now and who only have one year.
Left those guys are, valuable but it's hard for, me

(23:50):
off the top of my head to truly go back
in time and, say probably the last significant senior Night
i've been a part of was PRE. COVID i can
just think of off the tip of my night where
you had those. Emotions now it's kind of, like, oh
it's senior. NIGHT i, mean it's really it doesn't have
that same. Tie And i'm not saying that's why everything

(24:11):
in the world of college basketball should change to get
back to having those type of. Nights but what's really
hard when you have especially older fan bases LIKE. Siu it's,
why like right now is a very important time for.
Yours truly you're talking to you here on the. Phone
we have to do a lot of interviews with these
guys because no one really knows who's still on our.
Team and if they don't even know who is on our,

(24:33):
team imagine them trying to remember who's on anyone else's
team within The Missouri Valley. Conference so there's a big
education piece, too AND i.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Think that's where where we're. At what makes it.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
Hard it's not the fact that guys are getting paid
that is the least right now in terms of least for,
me that's not what's been a struggling. Point what's been
a struggle point is the continuity is the year to
year to try to get to Know that's what Made
that's WHY i got into this. Field it was, THAT i,
mean you get a chance to truly be around, guys
to see them grow, up to see them grow mature

(25:08):
throughout this. Thing and unfortunately a little bit of, that
maybe not a little, bit.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
Maybe a little bit of.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
That hope hopefully at some point there is a. TURN
i think there will be a. Turn what that turn is,
Guys you, know there are guys who are and there
are guys and gals who get paid a lot more
THAN i do to figure that problem. Out but WHAT
i do hope is is that there there just becomes

(25:34):
more of a structure base where it's not open free
agency every, year and when we're going through spring football
practice and you still have people that are on your
roster then and by the end of spring practice are
gone again on their. Transferring when you're doing interviews with
guys and you're talking about, hey ex sign for the
fall and then two weeks later they're in the. Portal

(25:55):
those are things where it's, like, MAN i hope there
can be just more of a structure base where it
doesn't feel like it's free agency.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
At all times of every, day of every.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Hour if we can get out of, THAT i think
those things of WHY i told you we miss about
the game or we miss about that college, ENVIRONMENT i
think those things ultimately will come.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
Down well look exactly the. Same, no it will. NOT
i think those days are truly probably long.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
Gone but we can somewhat get a resemblance of close
of getting back to that or at least improving the
situation we're, in BECAUSE i don't think people Like, look
there's a reason THE, nba in THE nfl and all
professional leagues don't have free agency twenty four to seven.
Guys there just has to be a, structure and unfortunate
right now in college athletics there is minimal to no

(26:40):
structure at.

Speaker 1 (26:41):
All, yeah there's minimals. None you're, right people getting. Paid
it's not the problem they should it's all of the
other landscape, things and those things will get figured. OUT
a lot going on with the house. Settlement we will
know a lot within the coming, months for. Sure, look
before we let you, go what's the best way, brother
we can support? You and what should do our listeners of. Viewers.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
ABSOLUTELY i Mean i'm all over social, media so you
guys can find me ON. Ax I'm i'm ON x
a lot At, Underscore luke P, martin be sure to look.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
Me up say.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
HELLO i always love the be yu, faithful especially when
we were getting ready for football. Season, man those Crazy cougar, fans,
brother they were they were all, over uh seeing what
we were, doing which is. AWESOME i, mean that's what you.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
Want in a fan.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
Base and, obviously you, know there's a lot of stuff
throughout the year Where i've done some interviews With canard
and you, know if anyone's looking to try to get
a little bit of insight of the guy that's coming,
there they can always look up our content what we.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
Do but that's that's the best, way.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
Man you.

Speaker 2 (27:42):
Know we live and die on social media, nowadays so
that's that's that's WHERE i try to. Thrive and for
anyone who wants to reach out and, connect that's always
a great.

Speaker 1 (27:51):
Way live by the, phone die by the. Phone that's
the name of the, game right. Now do you connected in?
BASKETBALLIS i hate to bring it that, Way, Luke thanks
for your time. Today hopefully we'll catch up with you.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
Soon, absolutely, guys thank.

Speaker 1 (28:03):
You that Was Luke martin voice of selukis not much
more to say a lout. There brett wanted to have him.
On he had an inside. PERSPECTIVE i like to get
these play by play guys on that have followed and
watched these guards, before Or ford that have played that
are AT. Bayu now they can give us real inside
scoop seeing up. Front And i'm glad that he said
That canardists faced some, adversity WHICH i think is good

(28:23):
for the fan base to hear because if anything were
to come up, again WHICH i don't think it, will
but it lets you, know, hey this guy dealt with.
Adversity when he's going through a shooting slump or something,
struggling he can still work himself back and go to.
Court because people probably wrote with Mag off in the
beginning of the, year by the end of the season
he was with some people's favorite. Player and that's how basketball.

(28:44):
Works it's a full. Season just because you don't see
him in the exhibition game or non, conference you might
see him in THE ncaa tournament In. March the whole.

Speaker 4 (28:52):
Time during this, INTERVIEW i just kept, thinking, oh maybe
he could be My wi mac.

Speaker 1 (28:55):
Oh maybe it could be man wit Mag. Oh you know,
what maybe he could be the mohit mag role like.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
That that's WHAT i. Heard the whole interview is this
guy loves to play. Defense he loves to be A
swiss army, enough, yea he loves to shoot the. Basketball
he can do it. All he can do whatever he's
asked to. Do And i'm Sure Kevin young's really excited
to have another guy just like that In Cannard Davis, junior.

Speaker 1 (29:13):

(29:55):
we're gonna get directly right into a world OF byu sports.
Segment we talk a lot of, basketball a lot of
football on this. Show BUT i wouldn't do my due
diligence IF i didn't discuss The olympic. Sports you. Go
you guys Know i'm a big fan of the, soccer the.
VOLLEYBALLS i had a question yesterday about what facilities need
to be. UPGRADED i went on a whole twenty minute

(30:15):
tangent in regards to WHY byu women's soccer and volleyball
deserves to have their own locker room upgrade at The
Smith's Field house In. Southfield you guys, Know i'm gonna plug.
That always it's about what have you done for me?
Lately and THIS byu women's volleyball team has earned the
right to have. Those it is my job to push

(30:36):
that agenda narrative AND i will do so. Today but
we're going to discuss the non conference schedule with one
of the Great he's in The hall Of FAME Byu
hall Of. Fame you can't say enough about those that
have worked really hard to put themselves in that. POSITION
i don't have to give him any. Introduction we know
who he. Is we welcome in from THE byu women's volleyball.

(30:58):
Team we got assistant Coach Dave hide online, coach thanks
for joining us. Today of, course let's just let's start.
Here you, know how did you how long have you
been an assistant with the with the program and just
your journey to B.

Speaker 5 (31:13):
Yu but you, KNOW i had my work work my
way back. HERE i started At Idaha, state was there
for four years and then went To houston for two
BEFORE i, came, uh you, know back to B. Yu
So i've been coaching for almost twenty, years but over
half of it has been TO.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
Bu, yeah you've had a great coaching. Career you look
at the resume you as a player as well in your.
Time i'll let the resume speaks for. Itself when you
look at all the. Accolades there's there's not much MORE
i can. SAY I i hope that you, KNOW i
can succeed in life the way you succeeded as not
only a, player but as a coach as. Well that's

(31:52):
WHAT i like to. Say, uh let's just, start let's
go thank, you of, course you. Bet let's start with
the non conference schous you, know how does this schedule
prepare you to for the challenges of The big twelve?
Conference they added obviously four additional teams not too long,
ago and the conference got, better and obviously coming from THE,
wcc which was.

Speaker 5 (32:10):
Competitive, yeah you, know we really loved THE. Wcc it
was a great conference for. Us you, know we made
it to the final, four you, know twice coming from THE,
wcc and so we loved. It but we knew coming
to The Big twelve it was also going to be
great and it was going to prepare. Us and it

(32:32):
is a little. Different THE wcc was a little bit
more top, heavy where The Big twelve is a little more.
Balanced and so we do talk about that type of
stuff as a, staff is how can we prepare for
The big twelve and the rigors of? It and you,
know last, year we finished on the road three out
of the last four and you, know playing top top

(32:54):
fifteen team on the road and then boom right back
into the. Tournament and so you, know we take those
things into. Consideration and and so not only do we
talk about who we want to play and, why but
do we want to.

Speaker 6 (33:08):
Be, home do we want to be? Away and and.

Speaker 5 (33:11):
We try to always you, know host two tournaments a
year in pre season and then one where we travel
and then usually the fourth. Weekend we have some really
really good schools here. Locally utah is in our.

Speaker 6 (33:26):
Conference we don't play them anymore, preseason but you know
we Have Utah.

Speaker 5 (33:30):
State we were In Utah valley that we, feel you,
know got the rivalry that.

Speaker 6 (33:36):
Can help us get get ready for The big twelve as.

Speaker 1 (33:38):
Well, yeah how is it Having utah in the? Conference
a big time? Game? Now you guys see them twice a? Year,
yeah you know.

Speaker 5 (33:48):
It in, truth we actually would kind of always see
him twice a year, anyways once in regular season and
then in THE ncaa you, know second, round.

Speaker 6 (33:57):
Because they always uh you, know we would there they
were come to. Us that's just how THE ncaa.

Speaker 5 (34:02):
Worked now we just get to play them twice in,
conference AND i think that's great for the. FANS i
think it's great for the game where we can play
once at you, know in The Smithfield house and then
once in the at The Huntsman. Center but you, Know
beth does a really good job At utah and and
they've always had good teams and and.

Speaker 6 (34:22):
It's always fun to play against.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
Them, yeah they definitely have very good teams up. There
and what makes just those those robbery games. DIFFERENT i,
mean All big twelve games are, tough but That utah
game now with them definitely being in the, conference what
just makes that game so special at The huntsman and
down here and you're up there In, northendon down here

(34:45):
in The Smithfield. House that's one of my favorite games to. Watch,
yeah you, know.

Speaker 5 (34:51):
Outside the obvious of, look you're you, know you're raised
in the state Of.

Speaker 6 (34:55):
Utah usually you know A utah fan or A u
Y u, fan and so you, know it starts at
a young.

Speaker 5 (35:03):
Age but not only, that we we recruit a lot
of the same players and so there's.

Speaker 6 (35:09):
That element to.

Speaker 5 (35:09):
It and then there's a lot of friendships that are
across the net because of. That they play a certain
at the same clubs and in high schools and and
so there's those you, know interpersonal you, know you, know
competitions that they, have and so it's just super exciting
fans turn out and and the gyms are just.

Speaker 6 (35:31):
Electric you.

Speaker 1 (35:32):
Guys a few weeks, ago BUT i Think three's gonna
announce a new addition to the, roster the signing of Transfer.
Leberro could you tell me more About emma and what
she's bringing to the team with two years of eligibility.

Speaker 5 (35:48):
Left you, know, yeah, she's first, off she's a great
individual and that you, know makes her a great.

Speaker 6 (35:56):
Fit and, too, she's you, know a good volleyball.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
Player she she played at a high level the last two,
years especially last year At Washington, state and so she's
just gonna bring, experience and you, KNOW i think.

Speaker 6 (36:12):
That's something that we could.

Speaker 5 (36:13):
Use you, know last, year we were relatively, young and
as far as who was, PLAYING i, mean obviously they
come in playing a ton of volleyball as a, club
SO i don't want to say young at, volleyball but you,
know they're still trying to figure out the game at
the college, level and so she kind of, brings you,
know the, calm you, know experience from playing you, know

(36:36):
at a high level for the last few. Years BUT
i think she can come in and really help this team,
out you, know both on and off the.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
COURT i WOULD i would be remiss IF i didn't
ask about the alumas of the. Program you've been there
a long. Time we know What Ronnie Johnson perry. Brings
she's competing over, there you, know for THE v AND l,
roster just her time at by you and just seeing
her And Mary lake you, know right, NOW i love,
that you, KNOW i love volleyball there In Salt. Lake

(37:08):
it must be nice having them close and you, know,
alumni seeing your, alumni you, know succeed at the highest.

Speaker 5 (37:14):
Level it's you, know it's pretty special that, now you,
know volleyball has gotten to a point where we not
only have, one but two professional leagues in THE us
where we can you, know see some of the players
that we grew, to you, know love as, fans but
then as coaches that we, hey we get to see
him because it's hard to go to you, Know brazil

(37:36):
Or poland Or italy Or turkey wherever they might be.
Playing but like you, Mentioned ronnie and and And mary
At Love Salt lake And Alexa gray just announcing that
she's coming to being outside there, too a former, first,
second and third Team All american FROM, Byu so that's pretty.

Speaker 6 (37:57):
Cool and Then ronnie specifically right now with the and
now she's just she's such a good, human she is so.

Speaker 5 (38:04):
Amazing she's you, know was a kick named captain of
THIS vnl. Squad she came back to you, know our
gym this you, know past semester and talk to to
our players and just really you, know shared her experience
and and you, know her, time which was just really.

Speaker 1 (38:24):
Cool, yeah you love when the former players come, back
and you b Y u is such a special. PLACE
i in my time there and have been have been
able to cover all Of cougar sports the last five years,
Now i've seen so many, players members of The church
Of Other faces come and thrive in this. Environment from

(38:46):
your eyes and your perspective and from the B Yu
women's volleyball perspective as a, coach how why do students
thrive in this this atmosphere we see it at all athletic.
PROGRAMS byu is really a unique, place.

Speaker 6 (39:00):
You, Know it's a great.

Speaker 5 (39:02):
Question and And Brian santiago just named our A d
AND i think he hit, it you, know right on
on the head With, look B yu is gonna pursue,
excellence you. Know and that's not only you, know on the,
court but off the. Court and so we are trying
to make the best choices as we, can whether it's,

(39:23):
academically as, people as, neighbors as you, know volleyball. Athletes you,
know we want to excel and but at the same,
time we want to do it the right. Way and
and B yu and there the people and the relationships
that we have here and the resources really allow athletes

(39:45):
to thrive in ways that maybe they wouldn't be able
to do at other. Universities and so it's just it's pretty.
Incredible and you, know speaking Of, ronnie who's who's not a,
member you, know came here and that's one of the
things that she talked about is the reason why she

(40:06):
LOVED byu so much is she could really focus on
the things that would make her a great volleyball, player
a great student, academically and you, know be a great
person as.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
Well that's exactly WHY i brought that. Up you, know
it's really empowering to, me is a member of the,
faith a member of the, church seeing other individuals who
aren't coming in and exceeding at a high. Level, honestly
WHEN I i won't. Lie WHEN i go back home
or go to, Church i'm, like, MAN i got to do.
Better i'm, LIKE i, was, like they're really, succeeding. Thriving

(40:40):
but that's what it's supposed to. Do when you look
at you know the mission of the, school what it stands.
For when it, says you, know insert to, learn go
forth to, serve that's exactly what it. Is and you
see that at all. Levels AND i really love. That
that's WHY i like talking about it because it's not
just about athletics and B. Yu it's bigger than. That
brian's preached, That Tom homo preached that even before for,

(41:00):
him and you see, that and that's one of the
big big sometimes the biggest attractors for recruits to come TO.
Byu it's, like, oh you went at a high, level
you're in a power. CONFERENCE i can get, developed play
at the next. LEVEL i can get a good, education
AND i can focus on the sport and limit. Detractors
oh and then Well i'm in LIKE i know my
mom even though when we joined the, church when she
had found out everything ABOUT byu AND i tried to

(41:22):
apply to all of the different, Schools she's just, like
you know where you need to, go right because this
this is the place where you just don't get in
trouble unless you're looking for. It AND i, said, yeah
you're not. Wrong And BYU's so special when you look
at all. Around but let's discuss the non conference schedule
a little bit. More what insights have you gained from
scouting these non conference opponents and how does that play,
into you, know the game plan of what you're trying

(41:43):
to develop before conference.

Speaker 5 (41:44):
Play, yeah you, know when we kind of look at,
that as far as the scouting and the type of
that really probably doesn't come until uh you Know august
when we maybe start looking at. THAT a lot of
the focus is more on. Us that being, said you,
know there's a number of these teams that we have

(42:07):
played before we have familiarity, with whether it was High
point from last.

Speaker 6 (42:11):
Year Ryan meet does a good job THERE.

Speaker 3 (42:15):
Lmu even though they have a new.

Speaker 5 (42:17):
Head, coach their assistant was elevated to head. Coach, uh you,
know we have usc With Brad keller and then obviously
all The utah, schools so.

Speaker 6 (42:30):
There is that some, familiarity.

Speaker 5 (42:35):
But we feel like these are all opponents that can
really help us become the best players we can, be
so that when The big twelve rolls, around that we're,
rolling that we're ready to, go that we have that
confidence that we know ourselves a little bit, better that
we can kind of lean on our, strengths you, know

(42:57):
when the when when adversity.

Speaker 6 (42:59):
Hits and So i'm.

Speaker 5 (43:01):
Excited you, know last, YEAR i believe we had nine
five set, Matches, yeah you, know and you'd hope to,
win you, know at least half of, them and we
came up short of. That and so you, know our
team is. Grinding we're, like, hey we got we gotta
turn the. Page and it's a new season And i'm
really excited to see what our team will.

Speaker 1 (43:19):
Do speak to, that though you've been a coach for a,
while what does that experience do for a, team maybe
a team that is coming, together might be. YOUNG i
feel like that experience is valuable because if you were
to look at THE byu basketball team right earlier in the,
year they couldn't execute maybe in close game. Situations by
the end of the season as an extend that you
saw what that. BECAME i feel like that experience is

(43:41):
valuable even if it doesn't go your.

Speaker 5 (43:42):
Way you, know you're exactly, right and it's just going
to kind of depend on the.

Speaker 6 (43:48):
Player, Really like we had a team in sixteen.

Speaker 5 (43:52):
Where we went To texas and we had them on
the ropes and you, know it's thirteen. Eleven you, know
it goes to fifteen and we end up losing in
the sweet. Sixteen and our team was pretty tired of
losing The sweet. Sixteen and then it took it upon
themselves in eighteen but like none of this no. More

(44:12):
and you, know that really motivated them to really and
it wasn't just in the season, either it was like
it lasted throughout the whole.

Speaker 6 (44:21):
Offseason it drove.

Speaker 5 (44:22):
Them and and you, know to where you can use you,
know that, adversity those challenges to an advantage and and
that's what you kind of you preach and you, hope
but you, know it's it's really up to the players
and and you, know their choice of if they want
to use it to the you, know for gain or

(44:46):
just you know it just.

Speaker 1 (44:48):
Happened, yeah it's it could really be used for Gaining
i've seen that all programs across the By i've seen
that that motivation come. Of, okay here it is a
year two later where you're, right players Like I'm i'm
done with. This this is not gonna. Happen you, know
you love the leadership you know from from, people and
let's get into. That who are the players we should

(45:08):
look out for coach this upcoming? Year the leaders of her.
TEAM i don't know if you guys have named captains,
yet but who should the fans be excited about this upcoming?

Speaker 5 (45:15):
Season, uh you, know we haven't really named captains. YET
i think the fans are just gonna love this. Team
and you, know there's there's some good, players you know
that are. Returning you've Got alex And claire and And
lulu and And, ellie you, know and along with. Others

(45:39):
with B, K i, mean she was a huge force
that came in and and just improved a. Ton me
has been getting after it this, offseason all the players.
Have and then you've got some some new new players coming.
In you, know we had four editions with With Suley,
davis the top twenty five recruit in the. Country yeah,

(46:00):
know Blame, myers another really exciting. Lefty the fans are
gonna love And grace From Salt, LAKE A cetter and
and and Uh KAYLEE. T libero from From Kansas city
along With emma that we had previous talked about a
lot of good. Players you, KNOW i think their. Story

(46:20):
all of them are, still you, know trying to write their.
Story so hopefully all of them have an exciting chapter
that that these fans can come and be a part.
Of BUT i will say THAT i think the thing
that's going to be most exciting is how this team
is gonna play and come together this.

Speaker 1 (46:37):
Year i'm gonna need those deep blues when it's all
said and, done every Last it's the favorite. Thing those
are the those are the best parts that when they
when they do those, deepens those stories tell the. Stories
is the reason WHY i got into. This all the
court stuff is, great but off, that let's talk about
you a little bit. MORE i love getting into this. Aspect,
Recently i've been discussing. THIS i love you, know uh

(46:58):
the b yu aspect of school is. Great athletics are,
great but when we go, home we get to be
with our. Family volleyball obviously is and. Everything you, know
you go, home family matters so. Much just what does
that meant to, you the people that have supported, you
the sacrifices they, made and just how faith has played
a role off the.

Speaker 5 (47:18):
Court, yeah you, know it's it takes the people around
you to to. Love like we always, SAY i got you,
know we gotta love what we're doing in order to do,
it which we.

Speaker 6 (47:31):
Do but when it.

Speaker 5 (47:33):
Comes to, coaching your family has to love it, too
because it could be it could be a challenge for the,
wife which you, know she's been incredibly. SUPPORTIVE i have
two amazing. Kids they're both, young so sometimes they wonder
why Why i'm always, Leaving.

Speaker 3 (47:53):
But you, KNOW i do.

Speaker 5 (47:55):
IT i do it for them Because i'm around a

want to help them will. Succeed and it's not just even.
